Mafiq is famous for deep sea fishing, scuba diving and whale sharks watching. Aquatic life is abundant and the coral gardens are pristine due to the protection of the Mafia

Island Marine Park. There are no crowded infrastructures in the place, towering skyscrapers and pollution. It is truly a natural experience.”

Together with Pemba and Unguja, Mafia Island forms the Tanzanian Spice Islands, the largest of a small archipelago of islands and atolls and is truly a paradise in the Indian Ocean. It lies in Rufiji River’s mouth in South Tanzania and it is the southernmost of three islands (incl. Pemba & Zanzibar). It is located off the coast of Tanzania; 25kms from the mainland and 130kms from Dar es Salaam scattered over the Indian Ocean 21 km off the Rufiji River Delta in central Tanzania. The largest of a score of islands, atolls and tidal sandbars, Mafia itself is approximately 50 km long by 15km across, and is surrounded by a barrier reef teeming with marine life. Almost half the coastline of Mafia, some 822 square kms has been gazetted as a marine park by the government.

HISTORY AND CULTURE

Mafia has had a prominent place in the history of the East Coast of Africa and retains a traditional culture and friendly people with a population of 35,000 who depend on fishing and agriculture. Mafia was part of the sultanate of Kilwa and prospered as a settlement during Kilwa’s rise as an economic power. The island lies across the trade routes from the Gulf and has seen Egyptian, Omani, GrecoRoman, Chinese, Portuguese, English and German occupation.

BEACH AND BAY

Mafia Island is located in the magnificent southern circuit of Tanzania and Zanzibar and is part of a fascinating array of parks, reserves and Indian Ocean islands. The coral reefs, bays, sand bars, lagoons and beaches of the Mafia Archipelago are now part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania’s first marine national park. Only a thousand visitors a year come here so it remains very much a traditional Swahili Coast destination and really can lay claim to the title of “unspoiled”.

Mafia is the destination for those who truly wish to “get away from it all”. Even after two decades of a love affair with Mafia, we are still discovering new beaches, previously unrecorded birds, plants, fish and corals, new dive and snorkel sites and we continue developing new excursions to enjoy the “ISLAND LIFE”.

NATURE UNAFFECTED BY TIME

The Marine Park - over eight hundred square kilometres - ensures Mafia´s fragile biodiversity is preserved. Over four hundred and sixty species of fish and more than fifty genera of corals are here to be enjoyed by snorkeling and scuba diving. Excursions to coastal forests to walk and picnic, and excellent bird-watching in five different habitat types from the reef flats and shores to dry woodlands and coastal forests are part of our activities programme. Road safaris to other areas of Mafia complement the visitor’s experience and understanding of traditional village life. Kirongwe village is famous for its clay pots, Jimbo for its ukili mats, Mlola Forest, RasMbizi coconut plantation and Kitoni.

BIRD WATCHING

Bird watching in Mafia adds a very interesting dimension to a Tanzania wildlife safari, as the visitor will see many species of shorebird, including migrants such as the Crab Plover, and other species found in coastal thickets and mangroves that cannot be observed in the National Parks and Reserves. The visitor will see many spectacular rollers (Lilac-breasted) and beeeaters (White-cheeked) between Kilindoni and Kinasi, and there are five species of sunbird in the Kinasi gardens. The black or white Dimorphic Heron is the common species at roosts in Chole Bay. The Kinasi Nature Trail has been designed with bird-watching very much in mind.

MAFIA ISLAND WILDLIFE

The sea around Mafia Island hosts an outstanding mosaic of tropical marine habitat including coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves, inter-tidal flats, reef flats, lagoons and coastal forest. These are nesting sites for Green and Hawksbill turtles while Leatherback, Olive Ridley and Loggerhead also occur in Mafia. Sharks, barracuda, grouper, needlefish, moray eels and triggerfish are also prominent in these waters. Also, Torpedoshaped and robust yellow-fin tuna, cobia manta rays and sting rays, swordfish, black marlins and wahoo are Mafia Island wildlife seen in the Marine Park. “Mafia Island is ideal for nature lovers as well and can be a real paradise for tourists, a wonderful destination to round off a wilderness safari or simply put your feet up and unwind! It is a unique and perfect destination as part of a safari package or simply a place to relax and get away from the daily, modern and busy world.”

ACTIVITIES

The main activities guests will be interested in while staying in Mafia Snorkeling, Scuba diving and swimming around the islets and beautiful coral shelves of Chole Bay Swim and snorkel with the amazing whale sharks (usually October-March) Turtlehatching season from July to September Sailing on traditional jahazis or outrigger ngalawas with local sailors Guided excursions to villages on the islands to see traditional village community life and economic activity, such as boat building and farming

GETTING TO

There are quite a number of scheduled flights flying into and out of Mafia every day. Auric Air, Coastal Aviation, Flight link and Safari Airlink. The flight by plane takes only 45 minutes from Dar es Salaam and 1 hour from Zanzibar or the Selous.

WHEN TO GO

Generally, Mafia is accessible all year round. Mafia has very good weather throughout the year. Virtually straddling the equator means that the island never gets cold and so the only thing to avoid is the rain. The best time to visit is during the dry season: June-August. The wet season is November-March as well as December- February.
