Why do I get the feeling that this is going to be a blockbuster year? Maybe it’s just the optimism that comes with the welcome return of some warming sunshine on my skin. Or maybe it’s the “Oscar effect”, when the world puts on its glamourous best to celebrate creativity at its most spectacular. But as I skimmed through the proofs of this bumper spring issue I saw winners everywhere, and much closer to home! Jini Reddy, award winning travel and nature writer on experiential, ethical travel

ow does one end up as an author writing about the joys of connecting with nature and landscape? In my case, it was my experiences as a travel writer, meeting people from indigenous communities abroad that initially sparked a desire to deepen my own relationship with the earth and experience the world in more authentic, magical ways. in India, one time I met the Bishnoi - they’re the world’s oldest environmentalists, and have been protecting the land since the 15th century. Their women folk have been known to breastfeed orphaned deer. In Iran, I took tea with shy, friendly Qashqai nomads who migrate between summer pastures in the Zagros mountains and winters in the lowland. In Australia’s Queensland, two sisters from the Kuku Yalangi tribe led me on a walk to one of their special ‘women’s places’. There they told me sacred Dreamtime stories I vowed never to share and in the remote valleys of Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province, I met a young woman from the Kalash tribe who talked of the fascinating

pagan rituals that her people still practiced. Though diverse culturally, all shared a desire to live in harmony with the natural environment and this resonated with me. But the cultural diversity is something I resonate with too: I was born in Wimbledon and raised in Montreal, Canada, to parents of Indian descent who themselves were born and raised in South Africa - and I now live back in the borough. A bit of a mouthful? Yes, but a perfect cocktail of kaleidoscopic influences, which fuelled my wanderlust.

One pivotal moment happened on a remote jungle path in Guatemala. To cut a long story short, I’d been abandoned by my guide, a jungle patroller. Though initially I’d been livid, and then fearful - all sorts of dangers lurked in the wild - after a couple of hours, I began to feel a growing elation: suddenly I was aware that all around me was a living, breathing natural community and that I was a part of it. The separation I felt from my wild environment melted away. I felt kinship and I felt supported. That was my first experience of consciously connecting with the aliveness or spirit in nature. A few years passed, and I began to tire of long-haul travel. I was worried about my carbon footprint too, and I turned my attention to Britain. I hungered for more creative, intimate ways to connect with the natural world on our shores, experiences that anyone could go and do, whether they’re a

nature novice, devotee, eco-lover, or simply curious. I spent five months jaunting around Britain seeking these experiences, and the result was my first book, ‘Wild Times’ (available at Wimbledon Books). It’s both practical guidebook and (hopefully) inspirational narrative. Recently it won the book prize at the British Guild of Travel Writers Awards 2017, and was a finalist at the Travel Media Awards 2017. The experiences in the book and many of those I’ve been privileged to have had abroad have allowed me to slow down, to reflect and to travel in ways that benefit local communities and leave a positive impact on local conservation efforts. You might call it transformative travel or experiential travel or ethical travel. But really, it is about venturing forth with an open heart and mind, with awareness and gratitude. It’s important because these days we seem to live in a state of disconnect from both the nature ‘out there’ and our own human nature: we see a reflection of this in the chaotic state of the world, and the terrible damage inflicted on the earth as a result of the

choices and actions we make cumulatively, choices we make through lack of awareness, lack of empathy or through feelings of disempowerment. But all of this can be remedied. I’m now working on my second book, for Bloomsbury, exploring the magical in nature and the landscape in Britain. I believe we all want to invite more wonder into our lives, that deep down we all seek to live in more nourishing and meaningful ways, whether we’re conscious of it or not. I know of people of all ages who are hungry to experience the world with fresh, optimistic eyes, and to tread lightly on the earth. If this is you, I’d say you’re not alone - you’re part of a growing, positive movement, bridging the mainstream with more alternative, community-led, inspiring, imaginative initiatives that nurture people and the natural world. t this moment in time, I feel awash with hashtags. #100years, #MeToo, #instawomen, #feminism, #GirlsLikeUs, #EverydaySexism, Emma Watson’s #heforshe campaign, #Fem2, #genderequality – the list is endless. It’s an exciting time for women, not only in the UK - the worldwide women’s movement is really gaining ground. There are young movements like Frances Scott’s #50:50parliament (men outnumber women 2:1 in Parliament) and Jude Kelly’s fantastic annual WOW Festival (Women of the World) at London’s Southbank and especially, The Women’s Equality Party, a liberal feminist political party in the United Kingdom that was founded by Catherine Mayer and Sandi Toksvig at the WOW Festival 2015. There are 32 million women living in the UK; they account for 51% of the population. Women make a massive contribution to society in their paid and unpaid work. They should have fair representation and inclusion in the most important decision-making institution in our country. Even our own London Mayor, Sadiq Khan is getting behind the hashtag with his very own #BehindEveryGreatCity, making gender equality a big focus for 2018.

o it seems appropriate 100 years later, to celebrate the life of a Surrey legend, Ethyl Smyth. Darling would like to thank Dr Christopher Wiley of the University of Surrey for sharing this wonderful story.

Suffragettes were members of women’s organization movements in the late 19th and early 20th century, particularly militants in Great Britain. Only in 1928 suffrage was extended to all women. Dame Ethel Smyth (1858–1944) lived most of her adult life in Surrey. History tends to remember her primarily as a pathbreaking composer of six operas and many other orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. This was an impressive output given that the music profession was then fiercely male-dominated; it was extremely unusual at the time for a female composer to have enjoyed a successful international career.

music she composed in the early 1910s, and particularly in her song ‘The March of the Women’. Quickly adopted as the suffragette anthem, it was sung during rallies to rouse the crowds, as well as to boost morale in prison during periods of imprisonment and hunger striking. The artwork presented the ‘March’ in the traditional suffragette colours: violet for dignity, white for purity, and green for hope. In 1912, Smyth served a jail sentence in London’s Holloway Prison, having been arrested along with many other suffragettes for taking part in a window-smashing campaign across the West End. Visiting her in prison, the conductor Thomas Beecham witnessed a group of suffragettes singing Smyth’s ‘March’ while exercising in the yard, with the composer herself frantically attempting to beat time from her cell window using her toothbrush as a baton! Smyth’s last official act for the suffragettes also saw her conducting the ‘March’, in 1930, performed by the Metropolitan Police Band at the unveiling of the memorial statue to Pankhurst in Victoria Tower Gardens, adjacent to the Palace of Westminster.

Yet the area in which she had arguably the greatest impact lay not in music or literature (she published 10 books), but in politics. In September 1910 she heard a speech delivered by Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the Women’s Social and Political Union, and pledged to devote two years of her life to the ‘Votes for Women’ campaign. She became a leading suffragette, heading processions, addressing rallies, and developing a close relationship with Pankhurst herself. It was Smyth is to be commemorated by her home Smyth who taught Pankhurst to throw stones to town in this year’s Celebrate Woking festival, hit their target, and in 1913 Pankhurst was even ensuring that her fascinating story as a arrested at Smyth’s house. pioneering female composer and suffragette Smyth’s suffragette activity was reflected in the continues to inspire new generations. darlingmagazine.co.uk | spring 2018 13 13

It’s amazing how many friends from Strictly we’ve chatted to over the years in Darling. Darcey Bussell, Kevin & Karen, Louise Redknapp and now Danny Mac, set to play Joe Gillis in the iconic ‘Sunset Boulevard’ at New Wimbledon Theatre in April – we can’t wait… Interview by Simon Button What are you most enjoying about playing Joe Gillis? I love the level that he starts at in the show. I think it comes with age, but with a lot of the characters I’ve played previously they’ve been young men discovering themselves and stuff whereas this guy is a man and he’s already been through it all. He’s kind of at the end of his tether in this situation already and that’s just when the show opens so from that point you just build and build. It’s been so great to take on a character who already has so much substance and already has so much stuff going on. What are the big challenges about the show for you as a performer? I have an incredible duty to tell the story as essentially the narrator of the show. There are impeccable performances from the entire the cast and it’s based around four main characters, namely Norma, Max, Betty and Joe – but I’ve got to narrate the story so it’s about getting every bit of information over and serving the piece and everyone else’s performances in the right way. Vocally you have to be fit and healthy because it demands every part of your expertise and abilities.

You’re clearly in great shape but have you buffed up for the Act Two opening number where you emerge from a pool in just your bathers? If anything, I’ve had to do the opposite because going to the gym hinders me vocally. It’s about trying to find a healthy balance – eating well and keeping fit to a certain degree. I’ve not been to the gym as much as I have before, but I do like to maintain a level of fitness. What have you learned from working with such a skilled performer as Ria Jones, who plays Norma Desmond in the show? She’s incredible and she’s the reason the show is going out on tour. She is such a success story [having been Glenn Close’s understudy in the West End and appearing when Close was off sick] and also, Ria created this role in its original conception with Andrew Lloyd Webber some 26 years ago. It’s only now that she’s old enough to play it and it seems so poetic that it’s come full circle and she’s able to do the show. She’s an absolute triumph in it and such a joy to work with. My Joe would be nothing without her Norma. ‘Sunset Boulevard’ runs from 10th-14th April atgtickets.com/Wimbledon

THE SECRET LIFE OF WIMBLEDON’S BEES Editor Karine Torr chats to two local apiarists

eacher and mentor, Alison Pelikan: I’ve been keeping bees for 9 years now and love (almost!) every minute of it, it is the most completely absorbing activity I have done. As a gardener and allotment grower in Wimbledon I also love the way in which what I grow attracts pollinating insects including bees, and of course the forage (flowers) provides pollen and nectar for our bees (my hives are on my allotment), who in turn pollinate my fruit and vegetables and enables the bees to turn it into honey. Another aspect I love is teaching new beekeepers about the lives of the honeybee and how to manage a hive for the health and wellbeing of the bees. Along with this I sometimes mentor beekeepers around the borough, and again love the chance to share my passion for these amazing creatures whilst watching people’s skills develop. Can’t get much better than that! If my lovely bees manage to provide an excess of honey, then I sell it at my stall during the Abundance Wimbledon Fruit Day as well as at several other venues. The honey is of course simply taken directly from the hive, spun in an extractor, filtered to remove “hive debris” and that is that. This year we are taking a break from running courses for new beekeepers but intend to run them again in 2019. There are several other venues to look at if interested in learning more, including East Surrey Bees (privately run) and Surrey Beekeepers Association. WBKA@wimbledonbeekeepers.co.uk Amanda Berry: Bees are the most intriguing little creatures and they never cease to amaze me. I have been looking after bees for three years - and although they take up more time than I imagined - I’ve never looked back. It is the most fascinating and rewarding pastime. As pollinators, bees are vital to our food chain and one third of the food we eat is reliant on them. As the saying goes “They die. We die”. However, I can’t say that I took up beekeeping for the greater good - I did it purely for selfish reasons - my own interest and enjoyment. And to learn. I wanted a new challenge, something completely different from my day job as a graphic designer. Indeed, a challenge it has been. The more I find out, the more I realise I don’t know. I have been very lucky and have been supported by an experienced beekeeper who has been very encouraging. But, beekeeping is not to be taken up lightly - it requires dedication, commitment and time. The more emotional she gets, pleading, the more withdrawn and shut down he gets. He says he wants the relationship to improve but he can’t handle her critical complaining. Why is it that this young man, who professes love, seems to withdraw emotionally, just at the moment his partner so deeply needs his love and reassurance? She looks back at me, hurt and angry, whilst he remains unmoved, withdrawn and determinedly casting his eye away from his distressed partner. What’s happening? What we know, through years of research, is that we develop an internal model of operating within our relationships. This develops from the moment we are born. The amazing thing is that this template can be found across all cultures and nationalities. This template is your attachment style and there are three styles of operating. The ratio between these styles is also universal. Our attachment style is our relationship operating system. Depending on our template we all will operate in a similar style. When there is emotional anxiety we either: • withdraw

• step forward or • keep our emotional equilibrium Once we understand this, we start to make sense of how we operate within our relationships. ‘Attachment’ is my first love. I spent a post grad year studying attachment and its impact on relationships. Once we get a grasp of how this operates, suddenly we are no longer polarised. We are able to reduce the tension and start to feel connected. Having a good relationship is the difference between thriving and just surviving! Having a united front is the holy grail of parenting, says Elaine Halligan of The Parent Practice. Here are her top tips on communicating with your partner to find unanimity on tricky family issues By Philippa Hennessy

s parents, presenting a united front is not always easy – there is often one parent who does not uphold the mealtime rules, allowing the children sweets before dinner or to stay up past their bedtime. If one is more authoritarian and the other has a more laissez-faire approach, how on earth do you achieve any consensus? It’s difficult to get children to be cooperative if the family rules are not being upheld by both parents.

A UNITED FRONT CAN GO A LONG WAY • If your children are very young, agree on a strategy for teaching them how to dress themselves or how to react when they have a tantrum. • Agree on the rules and boundaries in different situations, whether it is at meal time, on excursions or away on holiday. • Acknowledge your partner’s point of view when it differs to yours. • Compromise when there is disagreement consistency is more important than the actual rule. • When there is conflict with your partner, do not criticise but make requests and explain your needs. • Respect each other’s commitments outside the home and family life by taking into consideration how much free time one of you may have from day-to-day.

• Complement each other on matters that relate to your children, such as backing each other up when one of you is enforcing a rule. • Avoid criticising and arguing with each other in front of the children. Instead, say positive things to/about your partner in front of them - should you need to discuss a contentious issue, then it is best to wait until the children are not in earshot or in bed. • Consult your partner before making promises to the children. • It is normal behaviour for children to play you off each other, particularly when one of you says “no” to something. What you will need: Icing sugar, for dusting. 227 grams of Rhubarb, Trim it so each piece is Âź inch thick and of regular length. 74 grams of sugar Small teaspoon of salt 1 packet of puff pastry 227 grams of Strawberries, sliced into quarters 1 tablespoon of corn starch 1 large egg white, beaten Whipped Cream, to serve

How to do it:

Turn your oven up to 200 degrees C, Gas mark 6. Flour a surface and roll out the pastry, so its 1/8 inch thick. Cut the pastry into 8 slices, 5 inches in size. Arrange these on 2 baking parchment lined oven proof trays. Take a large mixing bowl. Add the rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, corn starch, and salt. Gently mix these together until they have combined, the fruit should not be too beaten though. Be kind to your fruit! Arrange a good sized dollop of the mixture onto each of the pastry pieces. Fold the edges in and crimp to form a round shape. Brush the edges with the egg white and dust with sugar. Freeze these until firm. Pop them in the oven and bake for 35 minutes, or until the fruit mixture is bubbling and the pastry is golden brown. Make sure you rotate the baking trays to ensure they cook at the same time. Leave to cool on a baking tray, dust with icing sugar and serve with the whipped cream.

Is the contribution a gift or loan? For both parties, it is best to be open and clear about the arrangement: namely whether the sum of money is a gift or a loan. In many situations, the money will be gifted, and is often done so as part of inheritance tax estate planning. Please see below for further details. If it is a loan, you may wish to consider formalising the terms on which the loan has been granted, to include how and when it is to be repaid. There are various ways to assist in providing parents with some security in such an investment. Lender Issues If a child is obtaining a mortgage in order to purchase the property, then the Lenderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s requirements will need to be considered in respect of any financial arrangement being considered. In some circumstances, Lenders will not accept a deposit that has been loaned from a parent, due to the potential risk of the parent lender later asserting an interest in the property. As such, this could limit the lending options available. If the monies being provided are a gift, then a majority of Lenders will ask that the parent(s) sign a declaration to confirm the gift, and to also confirm that they have no interest in the property. Further due diligence will also need to be conducted on the donor, for anti-money laundering purposes. Family Law and IHT Considerations Careful thought needs to be given to property purchases involving gifts/loans to children

Essentially, this means that the guarantor agrees to cover the mortgage payments if the borrower fails to do so. It is important to be clear that there are risks in all of these approaches. hat have a zoo keeper, an Antarctic explorer, a wedding planner, a ballet dancer and the Air Ministry got in common? You may well ask yourself, but The Wednesday Painting Group is a place where five of the most glamorous and lively group of woman meet on a weekly basis. These Wimbledon stalwarts have been meeting once a week to paint and set the world to rights for many, many years. There is no stopping them - theatre, luncheons, never missing an opportunity to celebrate. Their positivity is infectious and with a combined age of 422 between the five of them they have many amazing things to share. Diana Fresinger, 83, chuckles as she tells of her time working at London Zoo and the whirlwind romance with the love of her life, “I met my amazing Hungarian husband at the Royal Free and married in a month and quickly had three boys within two years.” Diana is an accomplished artist. Sylvia Delehanty, 88, speaks passionately about her travels around the world as a youngster, and how, “I felt like I was on the edge of the

world as I stood on a beach in Patagonia and looked toward the Antarctic.” Later, in her 70s, she made a point of visiting the icy continent. Jean Travers, the baby of the group at 75, speaks affectionately of her time working at the Air Ministry, the happiness her family has brought to her over the years, and how she was inspired to paint while training to be a teacher. Eileen Symonds, 104, was an accomplished ballet dancer and model photographed by David Bailey, no less. Eileen kept the home fires burning whilst her beloved Bernard went to war, and when he returned they raised their three daughters and settled in Wimbledon in 1956. Judy Rees, 80, keeps the art group on their toes with a weekly crossword and cake. Judy talks fondly of the time she organised her daughter’s wedding - and how she kept the promise she had made to her five year old daughter that she would bake her wedding cake! With two Outstanding ratings in succession, the first ever in London and the South East, Clare Jefferies and her company have been praised by the CQC for their person-centred approach to care and for recognising how valuable social activities are in keeping seniors connected to society and part of their community.

“Staying socially active is equally as important in the care equation” Clare says: ‘I have devoted the last seven years to providing the highest quality home care and companionship for older people in Wimbledon and Kingston. I set up Home Instead Senior Care after experiencing poor care when my own parents were terminally ill at the same time and passed away within seven months of each other. I dedicate my working life to recruiting truly caring people who want to make a difference to older people’s lives, carefully matching caregivers to clients based on common interests to build strong relationships. Respecting how each client would like to be cared for is at the heart of our Home Instead visits which last a minimum of one hour, so there’s no rushed care. I have also recognised that needing help to continue living in your own home is just one part of getting older and I believe that support to stay socially active is equally as important in the care equation.

LOCAL HERO Gary Douch Bowel Disease UK

was founded in 2006 by Gary Douch and his consultant, Prof. Devinder Kumar to fund vital medical research into Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Bowel Cancer at St George’s University Hospital. Set up from Gary’s hospital bed, the charity has raised in excess of £625k for ground breaking research and is currently funding research worth approximately £350k under the guidance of Prof. Kumar in seven countries around the world.

Gary, who lives in Raynes Park and runs a local construction company suffers from Crohn’s disease and feels that medical research into these conditions is well underfunded and the need for these studies is vital for the long term benefits and survival of sufferers. The charity has no salaried staff so almost 100% of money raised goes directly to research.

THE SEX TAPE

pring, and an emptynester’s fancy, lightly turns to thoughts of downsizing. But at the same time, flash-backs to previous house-moves. Frantic rummaging, after finding only a cucumber and a puncture repair kit in the vital box marked ‘corkscrew’; losing all trace of your kids’ exam certificates, so they will never go to university or get a job; spending a fortune at the Cat Psychologist to get Tiddles through the trauma. Years ago, our local removals company, Bushells, moved us from Clarence Road to Woodhayes Road. They were really good. Keep it local, people! However, just before we moved, my husband had brought home a ‘video’ (remember those) lent to him by our Best Man. NB: like my husband, our Best Man was also a sad, trainee accountant, which contextualises the following, (not being nasty about trainee accountants - no trainee accountant ever describes their life as anything but terribly sad, but then they qualify and buy a BMW and join a golf club and are very happy.) The video was entitled ‘The Lover’s Guide’. (You must remember it - it was luridly advertised on bus-sides in the ‘90’s.) We watched a bit of it, feeling quite racy but also sheepish, before being so embarrassed we hid it down the back of a book-case. It was a sort of quasi-scientific documentary about how

After the move and during unpacking, I had one of those shock-horror moments: the forgotten video cassette. Gone! SO mortifying. For about 20 years after, every time I saw a Bushells removal van, I wished the ground would swallow me up. They must have found the tape, and tactfully disposed of it, whilst sniggering. We were probably the legend of Bushells. A few months ago, clearing out the attic, I opened a VHS box for Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ and there, inside, misfiled, was the unspeakable ‘Lover’s Guide’. All in a rush, I realised that Bushells Removals had not spent the last two decades laughing up their sleeves; they had not discovered the saucy cassette and mockingly confiscated it, knowing we could hardly complain without heaping shame upon our heads, and thankfully the children had been watching another tape of ‘The Little Mermaid’ which really was ‘The Little Mermaid.’ This means I can now go back to Bushells for my next house move free of all embarrassment!
