A POWERHOUSE of a woman Dao Tran-Boyd gets things done
F
rom setting up a City brokerage firm, selling bra straps around the world to organising charity bike rides in Vietnam, to recently completing her post graduate course in Executive Business Coaching, Dao gets things done. Her first job after her studies was with Barclays International Bank in Knightsbridge. She had a plan to work for companies that would enable her to travel. She saw an opportunity to do this by joining a company in Fleet Street, working nights, looking after multiplexors and large systems that involved cabling and very unglamorous work. However, her plan worked, and when the company started a new customer services section, she joined that to look after clients in Paris and Geneva. That led her to being head hunted by Telerate Interfinet, which was another leap to a whole new world. Working in the financial and commodities market gave her a new burning passion to work in the City as a trader and through perseverance she finally made it onto the commodities trading floor, as a futures trader in cocoa futures. And at that time in the late 1980s, she was the only woman working on the commodities trading floor! Dao had every intention of returning back to her high-flying job in the

City after the birth of her first child. However, when her daughter, Jessica, was born, she fell in love and said to her husband that she wasn't going to go back to work, even if they had to live on beans on toast. That was the beginning of another wonderful journey for Dao and she went on to have another two children. She would still say that first and foremost she is a mother and being an entrepreneur and a business woman comes second. However, her entrepreneurial flame continued to burn and she set up her own company, designing amazing web sites to big names in fashion and design, like Skandium and Marimekko. She then went on to designing and selling her own collection of exclusive bra straps. She took out stands at all the major trade fairs in London, Edinburgh, Dublin and Paris. It became a thriving business where she also supplied 50,000 pairs of bra straps to La Senza and is now wholesaling on all the major airlines in their in-flight retail magazines. Dao arrived in the UK from Vietnam in 1973 when her father was

sent here on a diplomatic posting. The Vietnamese Ambassador’s and some of the embassy officials’ residence was then by Wimbledon Common and Dao’s family were lucky to stay in this beautiful setting. After a stint of living in Hampstead, she returned to this part of town, now living in Kingston with her family.
A lot of Dao’s energies and a wealth of experience are spent with charity work as well as networking organisations, such as the Inspirational Women’s Group.

A: Vietnam is close to my heart. It is
Dao's children; Jessica (22) Alexander (20) and Anthony (18)
Q: What’s the Inspirational Women's Group all about and how did you get involved in it?
A: I spent 4 years as the Director for BNI in Surrey, one of the largest business networking organisations. This paved the way for my current job with The Nth Degree, a club bringing together high net worth members, facilitating business connections over wonderful lunches and dinners in exclusive venues. I have always been passionate about the role of women in society and through the large network of people that I have come across, I have been lucky enough to meet many truly inspirational women. And this year will see the birth of my longplanned Inspirational Women's Group – watch this space!
Q: Vietnam is close to your heart and you do some amazing work to help the less fortunate and vulnerable people over there. Cycle rides to raise money for Kids Without Borders, an organisation supporting schools in Vietnam, is just one of the things you are doing right now. Can you tell us how that all started and how it is going now?
my heritage and a big part of who I am. Having the beginnings of my life in Vietnam where I have witnessed a lot of poverty, not a day goes by without reminding myself how lucky I am. As a result, I'm a very positive person and live life to the full and look for the good in people. I am passionate in being able to give something back to Vietnam and in 2000 I was inspired to join a charity called Mind on a cycle ride through Vietnam, cycling 350 miles over 10 days and personally raising £6,000 for Mind. This first trip catalysed the forging of a new relationship with my mother country. In Vietnamese, the word for homeland is 'quê hương', which translates as 'fragrant lands'.
practitioner course recently, I was lucky enough to reconnect with a school friend, Angela Edmondson, who has started a charity called Diversity in Care, helping women and children who suffer from substance abuse. Since turning 50 this year, Dao has made real another passion in her life by completing a post graduate course in Executive Business Coaching. She aims to work with executives and managers with a different approach that will include meditation, mindfulness and spirituality. She feels strongly that these are often missing from our lives in the West.
Since rediscovering these "fragrant lands", I now organise an annual charity bike ride through Vietnam, an opportunity for my friends and colleagues to travel to a stunningly beautiful country, sample the delicious food, discover a new culture and visit an orphanage at the end of the trip. It's a life-changing experience and a chance to make a difference. The two charities that we support are: Catalyst Foundation and Kids Without Borders. Q: You have also been very involved in charity work closer to home, formerly as the Chair of NSPCC in Kingston. Are you still involved with local charities?
A: As well as overseas charity work, it is really important to me to be able to support local charities. Whilst I was on a neuro-linguistic

Having worked as a professional model, I know all too well how fashion images are manipulated to create a “false perfection” – and how detrimental these images can be to so many women’s self esteem. The same clothes will never look good on us when our bodies are so different. But, through my work as a Style Coach™and with my Life Coach hat on, I now understand how every woman, regardless of her weight and shape, has the ability to look and feel beautiful with a bit of know how! Tall or short, XXS or XXL, you can look fantastic when you dress according to your shape and personality. The key is to work holistically, learning to love yourself from the inside first; ironing out the problems that are at the root of our poor body confidence. Learn to do this (and anyone can, with the right help), and not only will you be able create a wardrobe of clothes that all fit and suit you perfectly, but you’ll also feel much happier in your own skin! a Old London Road – the village within our town Discovered by Marja-Leena Toseland
W
e all know Kingston’s famous fallingover red phone boxes which are officially named ‘Out of Order’ by artist David Mach, but do you know the exciting and vibrant street behind them? Old London Road is my absolute favourite street in Kingston with all its unique and fabulous shops, cafes and restaurants. Many of the businesses have been there for years, even decades, mixing happily with the newcomers who’ve just added to the street’s appeal. Cut slightly off from the hustle and bustle of Eden and Clarence Streets, Old London Road feels a little like a village high street and it is well worth that short walk from Kingston town centre. There is a real feeling of community here and with the help of its own Traders’ Association the businesses pull together to organise events and street parties. Read on to find out what the businesses there have to say for themselves.
Old London Road is home to Kingston Antiques Centre, where there are more than 100 dealers offering a startling array of antiques and quality vintage items. The large, rambling building provides space over two floors and has retained some of its original features that provide nooks and crannies framed by an imposing double staircase. John Cobbold www.kingstonantiquescentre.co.uk Frederick W. Paine is the town’s oldest firm of undertakers and has conducted funerals from these premises for over a century. Original interior dates from 1908. Archives contain records from 1896. The funeral museum and record room is open to visitors on Tuesdays. www.dignityfunerals.co.uk Winchmore Kitchens have been established for over 35 years and at 40 Old London Road for 26 years. "We have built an enviable reputation for competitively priced, quality contemporary and traditional kitchens. We take pride in providing an individual service
from initial consultation, site visits, creative design and planning through to installation. All our kitchens are made to order and supplied ready to install." Nick Fulton and Irene Penrose www.winchmore-kitchens.co.uk "Old London Road is the hidden treasure of Kingston upon Thames celebrating a realness and vibrancy unlike anywhere else in Kingston. Let's all face it, we live in a time of mass chains, high rental costs and fierce competition, however, Old London Road seemed like the right place for us. We wanted to mix with the local, independent, family run businesses and show that honest, good quality products, in our case food, can go a long way and influence more and more people to shop local and seek quality." on our doorstep ‘The Warren House Tales’ – review by Marja-Leena Toseland
W
arren House is a beautiful Victorian hotel on the Coombe Estate which boasts a fabulous past with its well connected owners and their high society guests. Prime Minister William Gladstone, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, the young Princess May, later Queen Mary and Winston Churchill were amongst the more notable and regular guests. The hotel is still privately owned and it has had five other significant owners since its construction in the late 1860s.
The author, Vicky KL Good, the daughter of the current owners has done an amazing job in researching and patching together a fascinating account of the lives of the families who have owned and occupied Warren House. ‘With Warren House as their stage, royalty, aristocrats, generals, diplomats, politicians, leaders of industry, and wealthy society ladies all have appeared in the spot like actors in a leading role. There’s drama, tragedy and romance in their stories, something for everyone’, explains the author.
Perfect holiday reading Demolition Queen by Betsy Cook Speer, is a fresh take on the thriller. Sam Albany the lead character is a talented tough modern wife, champagne drinking, fencing adventuress. She is quite a match for her domineering establishment husband. My favourite aspect of the book is Sam’s relationship with her brilliant deceased mother and the race to uncover who may have wanted her mother dead.
Darling Girls by Emma Burstall, is a wonderful, modern Jane Austen, exploring infidelity and the unusual relationships between the three women in love with the same enigmatic world famous conductor Leo Bruck. Victoria, the wife, Maddy the mistress and Cat the infatuation are such different personalities yet each believes that Leo only loves them.I loved the glimpses into this complex mysterious world where nothing is as it seems.

A very unhappy and overweight Sharon Plunkett is offered a chance to change her life to what she’s always wanted and suddenly she is beautiful and desirable. Sharon finds herself so popular she has to fight off the boys, but we are kept guessing if she will find her prince charming or if she has to kiss a lot of frogs first. It's a message to us all to enjoy what we have.

Jennifer Saunders IS BONKERS ! Marja-Leena Toseland tells us why
V
iv Groskop and Jennifer were a fine double-act at Rose Theatre when they talked about Bonkers, the story of what lies behind Jennifer and her creativity as a writer, comedian and actress, at least the bits she recalls, the rest is made up. Her father was a bit of a clown and the whole family tried always to have fun at home. They moved around a lot as her father was in the Air Force and Jennifer attended a lot of different schools learning to fit in quickly by using humour. Jennifer has been the other half of two incredibly popular and much loved double acts in TV history; in French and Saunders with Dawn French – her comedy partner of over 30 years and in the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous as
Eddie with Joanna Lumley playing Patsy. Is it really the end of French and Saunders? Are you really never going to work together again? We just retired the act, which was the French and Saunders sketches, the show, the act. I mean, we’ll always work together, but it won’t be (sings) French and Saunders, doop-di-woo-ee-woo. That’s what we retired from. Probably foolishly! (laughs) So what is in the future, apart from Bonkers? I’m doing another Blandings this winter, then I’ve got a couple of little things bubbling under, one telly thing and a little film I want to get going. But they’re really just at the talking stage at the moment. And I’m sort of quite enjoying that. I have this horror
of my diary being filled up by silly little things. I’m trying to keep next year as a sort of think tank thing, and maybe the Absolutely Fabulous film is one of those things! We’ve seen quite a lot of Jennifer going solo recently; guest hosting Have I Got News for You and winning the American People's Choice Award for voicing the wicked Fairy Godmother in DreamWorks' animated Shrek 2. And yes, she did all the singing herself, needing only a few sessions with a singing coach! She even joked about wanting to present Top Gear as that show needs a woman presenter. Bonkers: My Life in Laughs by Jennifer Saunders is a hilarious read. Highly recommended!

Headteacher, Sarah Hair: “Being a stand-alone prep school enables us to cater for girls with a wide range of abilities and helps us develop their individual talents to prepare them for the senior school which best matches their strengths, be they academic, music, sports, drama or a mixture. We are a very caring community: small enough to make every child feel individual, special and valued, and large enough to offer exceptional teaching, facilities and standards. Part of our success is attributable to having specialist teachers in art, drama, DT, French, ICT, music

The Anstee Bridge Experience by Chantelle Bloomfield
Woodcote House School
Anstee Bridge exists to help year 11 students who find school challenging and or have personal struggles. We take part in fun things such as, a project at the Rose Theatre which involved acting, filming and even a trip to London. Students are encouraged to emerge from their comfort zone, as they become more confident with Katherine and Jason. Another benefit of Anstee are the visiting professionals. Some students may not have anybody to confide in. Here, there is always somebody available to talk to. Katherine and Jason talk to us all individually to understand and develop our hobbies and interests. Our trips have included going to the Clink Prison Museum and even going up to the ITV Studios to meet Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. Anstee Bridge is an amazing opportunity to meet new people, achieve personal goals and have a clearer picture of the future. If Anstee is ever offered to you, grasp it whilst you can! Students develop self esteem enabling them to be more confident when applying for jobs, further education and family relationships. 12 june–aug 2014 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

on’t panic! Even though Summer is pretty much upon us and even though you may not feel in the great shape you had hoped to be, there are still small changes you can make to help you feel lighter, energised and more confident in your summer clothes.
Tip 1: Control is key Plan your food. You will have greater control over the ingredients and portion size. Last night’s healthy dinner leftovers are your easiest option. Make more, serve the extra portion and put it in the fridge for lunch the next day. Just add a handful of salad leaves to freshen it up. If you’re office bound serve it straight into a box so you can grab and go in the morning.
you with greater energy, clearer skin and boosted metabolism.
TIP 4: Don’t Crash Diet It's very detrimental to your health and to your long term weight management to yo-yo your weight just before a holiday, so please don’t be tempted by a quick fix. If you have a particular weight loss or health goal then do contact me directly for specific advice. Mention this article to receive a 10% discount on fees.

Plan your snacks as well and keep it simple – a piece of fruit with a small handful of nuts is best and easy to manage on the run. If you’re not hungry, don’t snack!
Tip 2: Eat Protein for Breakfast Breakfast is absolutely the most important meal BUT – eating the typical breakfasts of cereal or toast really is not a weight loss or energising plan. Aim to incorporate protein into your breakfast. Try eggs, cooked any way you prefer apart from fried, fish smoked salmon on rye toast or sardines on millet toast, or, if you love your porridge or granola, have a boiled egg on the side.
Tip 3: Drink Water Drinking water can absolutely help us to lose body fat. A dehydrated body is a sluggish body - metabolically and physically. If you’re not a natural water drinker give it a few days to get over running to the loo! When your body gets the message your cells will start to absorb and your whole system will thank

feel the power of raw energy by Patricia Campbell-Parker
I
‘ve always had a great interest in health and well-being, including the idea of making juice out of raw fruit and vegetables. 20 years ago, when machines were not easily available I was able to import a ‘Champion’ from Canada. Amazingly it is still working today. Like many people I had phases of using my juicer every day and at other times it languished at the back of the cupboard. Today though I’m passionate about the benefits daily juicing can bring to the whole family. Over the past few months there’s been a huge amount of media coverage supporting this view. By juicing fresh vegetables and fruits you are giving your body a wealth of vital nutrients that may otherwise be missing from your regular diet. Juicing is one of the best and easiest ways to flood your body with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Also, adding a wider variety of fruit and vegetables into your diet – or into the diet of your broccoli or cabbage-hating children! If you are someone who is finding it increasingly difficult to get up in the mornings, if you always feel lethargic until that first cup of coffee, or if you get home too tired to do anything but sit in front of the television, and reach for energy boosts through the day. A raw juice a day may be just what you need. Although, there are ready-made, shop bought juices, they may have had a lengthy shelf life, so are certainly not fresh! There is really no substitute for owning 16 june–aug 2014 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

WHY DIETS DON'T WORK and what to do instead by Anne Williams
W
ith the holiday season just around the corner, you might be thinking about going on a diet to get your body beach-ready. If so, think carefully, because diets don't work. Diets may help you lose weight in the short term, but you usually lose muscle as well as fat, and you
need muscle to burn calories. So often, when you stop dieting, you just put fat back on. Another big reason why diets don't work is that you become more preoccupied with food. Counting calories, constantly weighing yourself or cutting out certain foods – the more you think about food and the more deprived you feel, the more you want to eat.
www.transforming-health.co.uk
Improve your health and wellbeing with hypnotherapy
• Overcome anxiety, fears and panic attacks • Get help for insomnia and IBS • Lose weight without faddy diets • Have your baby naturally with hypno-birthing For a free, no-obligation 30-minute phone consultation, call Anne Williams at Transforming Health on 0208 546 2122
So what does work? The sustainable way to lose weight is simply to exercise more and eat less and, of course, to eat healthily. But if only it were that simple! We get caught up in habits, associations and beliefs around food, which are often unconscious and very ingrained, because they go right back to childhood. Deep down, you might believe that you should never throw food away; you might
use sweet things as a reward or eat for comfort. Losing weight often means changing your whole thinking about food as well as your eating habits. Catch
those self-sabotaging thoughts, such as 'I must finish everything on my plate' and begin to think differently. Keep a food diary to become more aware of what you're eating, your habits of when and where you're eating, and what your emotional triggers for eating are. It's the first step to dismantling those habits and to finding other ways to reward yourself or deal with your emotions. Finally, I always recommend the 'no diet' diet to my weight loss clients. Researchers at Hertfordshire University found that when people started to change habits unrelated to food, it had a knock-on effect on their eating habits. Changing aspects of their daily routine, such as going a different way to work, shopping in places they didn't usually go, even watching different TV channels, all helped them to lose weight almost without trying! GET READY FOR SUMMER
Marja-Leena Toseland is ditching her Winter coat
Shrinking Violet
F
eeling a little sceptical about inch-loss treatments, I set off to The Spa Boutique in Norbiton to see if Shrinking Violet’s claim of amazing results – with clients dropping a whole dress size after just one treatment – was true. Owner, manager and a very knowledgable therapist Aniela, massaged
The measurements taken before and after my treatment showed that I had lost around an inch around both the tops and the middle of my thighs, my tummy and hips! Amazing! My skinny jeans definitely feel loser now. But the best part is the smoothness and tightness of the skin. I know where to go if I get the beach-blues this summer!
a special oil, with hydrolysed lecithen as the active ingredient, into my thighs and my waist area. She wrapped a heat inducing wrapture, that looks like cling film, around these areas and left me to relax on a heated bed for one hour. The Shrinking Violet treatment works by chemical reaction and heat, causing lipolysis, which is a gentle non-surgical method to remove accumulation of fat deposits in specific regions of the body. It is also an extremely effective method for combating cellulite – I’ll vouch for that.
Special offer when you bring a copy of Darling with you and mention when booking; 1 for£60 or 3 for £150 and 15% off all other full priced treatments (July-August).

Environ Cool Peel
I
booked myself into Serenity Salon in Kingston Hill with high hopes that Environ Cool Peel can do wonders for my skin. Unlike more aggressive peels it doesn’t strip away vital layers of skin, promising a smoother, more youthful looking skin with minimal redness and no recovery time. Yolanda, the salon’s friendly owner, explained what was to follow in the next hour. After cleansing and gently steaming my face to open my pores she applied a low concentration lactic acid cream masque on my face and neck which was left for just 5 minutes. As this it was my first time visit,
this was sufficient to address lines, sun damage and problem skin effectively and comfortably.
to say, the lines around my eyes and on my forehead have visibly reduced!
A cool, alginate masque was then applied all over my face, even covering my closed eyes and mouth a slightly claustrophobic experience. A galvanic current was pulsed through the mask making me see flashing lights, literally. This step aids the absorption of a vitamin A based gel to reach the deeper layers and to speed up the growth of epidermal cells.
I’m very tempted to go for the full course of six treatments, which at £355 sounds very reasonable.
I’m writing this five days later, and my skin is looking and feeling smooth and healthy, with small blemishes gone, and, I’m pleased

very girl needs a great pedicure before the summer. My feet, not to mention my poor toenails, needed a lot of TLC after the long winter of hiding in boots and muddy trainers. I was booked in to have a pedicure at U.R Beautiful in Kingston, hoping they could sort my feet out.
After the foot soak and cuticle tidy, Aysa scrubbed my feet until all the hard skin had been removed. This was followed by a fantastic foot massage with a moisturising foot cream. Just what my feet needed. My nails were then shaped, buffed until they shined like glass, and finished with a gorgeous colour, always a nearalmost an impossible choice with considering all those varnishes to choose from.
U.R Beautiful is a big salon with special areas for different treatments. My therapist, Aysa, took me to the section with foot spas accompanied by massage chairs, which were a welcome surprise. It was great to have a back rub
Whilst chatting with Aysa, I
discovered that she had been featured in Elle South Africa as the best nail technician for French polish manicure in Cape Town. She certainly managed to make my feet smooth and my nails look great. Now I just have to find my Fit Flops! The 1-hour Pristine Pedicure is £43 with a Senior Technician.

For anything over this amount, half will be held for your children until their eighteenth birthday and your spouse will be entitled to the income from the other half. If you do not have children, your spouse will be entitled to all of your belongings and the first £450,000 of your estate. The remainder will go to your relatives, such as your parents or siblings, even if you had no intention for them to benefit at all.
When there is no will in place
A will offers you peace of mind
When someone dies without making a will, their estate is distributed in a set legal order.
In a will you can specify who benefits from your estate, you can nominate guardians for your children and you can incorporate tax planning measures to reduce inheritance tax. A will can give
he stresses of everyday life often mean that making a will and Lasting Power of Attorney are put to the back of a very long “To Do” list. But this is precisely why it is important to consider a will and Lasting Power of Attorney; so that you can provide for your loved ones should you no longer be around to do so.
If you are unmarried, your partner would not be entitled

Ensuring your wishes are carried out Similarly, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) can ensure that your wishes are carried out during your lifetime should you not be able to make decisions yourself. KAOS was set up by a group of Kingston Artists back in 2010. Our aim was to bring together artists and makers across the borough and raise the profile of visual arts in the community. This year’s Open Studio is our biggest yet and its joined by artists based at the ASC studios in Hawkes Road. A trail map of the different venues (on the right) is also available in libraries, local cafés and at:

or two weekends in June around 40 artists and s e y makers from Kingston’s artistic community will be opening their homes and studios to visitors as part of the 2014 Open Studios.
Open Studio Events are now an established way across the UK for the public to meet artists, learn more about their work, and buy directly from them. In Kingston we will be clustering the artists into groups in each venue, so that visitors will be able to look at paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles and more with just one visit. Most of the 8 venues will offer refreshments in return for a donation to KAOS’ charity for 2014: Kingston Foodbank.

Summer looks for your home
I
’m delighted that it’s Summer. It’s my favourite season and it permits us to draw on lots of sources for our decorating and furnishing ideas. The Chelsea Flower Show was a lovely start to the season; beach holidays are approaching; outdoor entertaining at last seems a possibility; and we want to create moods in our home that remind us of warm, lazy summer days.
Or for outdoor living in a temperate climate, where summer showers are part of the season, create a private space in your garden where you can enjoy summer evenings, despite the weather, like the summer house below designed by Ann Jackman Interiors for a garden in Kew.

Make your precious space work creatively for you Consider flexible modules
M
odular seating units have several benefits over more traditional fixed seating options as they allow a level of flexibility that static options can't.
SPACE
When considering modular seating it helps to think how they may be configured to work in your available space. Where access is challenging, especially pertinent when trying to furnish a basement or loft extension, modules are an obvious solution.
SIZE Modular (or sectional) seating units are available in a wide selection of designs and styles, as well as sizes. Generally standard sized modules should optimise your space. Occasionally bespoking a section to fit a difficult shaped room is the answer. Indeed, it may be necessary to be really creative and order your modules made to measure! In any event knowing your exact measurements is essential when buying.
USE Many modules may double up for occasional bedding. If this is particularly important choose units that will allow you to dual-use your seating. Will your sofas be mainly used for family/lounging or for more formal seating? Do also consider that many are deep and/or low to the floor, making these harder for older users to get out of. Higher legs may be a good compromise.
BUDGET Buy what you need for your space, without overfilling it. You can always add but it's annoying to buy more than you really need, or that your space can currently take. Generally speaking, the more sections purchased, the more you'll be spending. So, if two bigger modules can fit, you may be better off than buying three smaller modules. If you're planning to double up your modules for occasional sofa bedding, buy once and
buy well. The extra outlay initially may well be worth it - remember that you're saving space too!
FABRIC/LEATHER Modular seating comes in all fabrics, to suit your taste, lifestyle and budget. Where leather isn't offered on a particular design do consider faux options, or stain repellant treated fabrics. You will be surprised at the quality as well as the amount of choice!
STYLING Whatever your taste, there's modular seating out there for you. Corner modules, chaise modules, U-shapes, combination units.... If you are looking for creative, flexible modular seating, Seriously Sofas will be delighted to offer you interested, expert advice and assistance. A Bomb in the Basement
Radical renovations Radical renovations by byPaul PaulBryan Bryan
B
uilder Paul Bryan: After having completed a large double extension and full house renovation in Burghley Road, Wimbledon Village, Haven Construction were asked to tender for the work across the road. We were awarded the contract and started work on this lovely home in September 2011. Initially we were building a new loft conversion, removing the existing staircase and creating a new centre orientated circular staircase, creating a new extension to the ground floor, remodeling and renovating all of the rooms within the house, creating a rear terrace, redoing the front of the house entrance and front driveway and decorating throughout. We had a proposed work time of 24 weeks. We started with the loft conversion, and 1st floor works after stripping out the entire house. We were two months into the project and it was decided that it would be good to have a basement as well. After receiving the structural calculations and piling details and in turn pricing the job the basement contract was added onto the scope of works. We started the ‘great dig’ at the beginning of January and soon became aware that there was an enormous amount of rubble at the rear of
the house on the slopes of the hill going down towards the tennis courts. What had happened was the rear wall of the house had been bombed in the second world war and the rubble covered up over time the rear wall re-built, but we had the task of clearing the rubble. After hiring mining rock splitters, numerous sizes or breaker and many man hours, we were able to clear the rubble and build the basement The result now is a magnificent basement on the slopes of Wimbledon Hill, looking onto an exquisite garden and lower terrace, accessible by spiral staircase internally and from the rear terrace steps externally. A satisfied customer and a proud builder is always a successful outcome. Haven Construction and Building Services Ltd: havenconstruction.net havenconstruction.sw@gmail.com 177-187 Arthur Road Wimbledon SW10 8AE T: 78805 460639 “Paul Bryan and the Haven team carried out what was a big project with a number of unexpected complications to a high standard. We are very pleased with the outcome and for the professional way everything was dealt with.” The Happy Client

A Papple or a Grango anyone? by Valerie McBride-Munro
I
’m all in favour of boffins tinkering around with plants if they come up with improvements – greater pest resistance or better shape and colour. However, a recent horticultural breakthrough has really made me think.. We know that tomatoes and potatoes are in the same genus. Here botanical latin gives us the clue – Solanum tuberosum (potato) and Solanum lycopersicum (tomato). Looking at each individual plant, you can also see that the flowers are very similar, but who in a million years would have thought that some bright spark would have combined these two plants, so that you could harvest tomatoes at one end of a plant, and potatoes at the other and called it TomTato?! Plant experts have already taken bits of their best vegetable varieties, and grafted them onto extremely vigorous-growing root stocks to produce faster growing, stronger, healthier and longer producing plants than the normal version, but this was different. Above ground, one TomTato plant is allegedly capable of producing more than 500 sweet cherry tomatoes, while at the other there will be a ‘nice crop’ (whatever that means) of spuds that can be boiled, mashed, roasted or made into chips. While I was still reeling over this news, I set about finding out how much other tinkering has been done recently to tickle our taste buds. If you thought that limes should be green, now there is a crop from India called the Red Lime, with a deep orangey-red skin with orange flesh, which
could make your tequila really sing. As it combines both orange and sour flavours, it could also make an ideal additive for the marmalade maker. Then there’s the Papple, a fruit that arrived from New Zealand last year which tastes like an apple with the skin and texture of a pear. Not long afterwards, M&S introduced the Grango, a fruit from Spain that looks like a grape, but tastes of a mango. I’m sure that there are many others, but what do you think of a Pluot, a cross between a plum and an apricot, which is more plum than apricot? Or Aprium, the other way round? What next? © 2014 Valerie McBride-Munro Valerie McBride-Munro offers garden problem solving sessions in your own garden or by email valerie@auntieplanty.com

The purpose of the hold-up play is to try to sever communications between your opponents’ hands in their most threatening suit. In today’s hand, South plays in 3NT and West leads 5y. East contributes Qy. Should South win with Ky? To answer this question, South should assume that the leader has a 5-card heart suit. This assumption will cover you for almost all combinations. If West has five hearts headed by yA10, then East started with two hearts. If South wins the first trick with Ky and then takes the diamond finesse – the correct play – if this loses, East will still have a heart left to lead back through South’s yJ6, and the contract will be defeated. To prevent this, South should play low at trick one, allowing East’s Qy to win. East returns a heart and, now, whether or not West wins this next trick, South still has a heart stopper, and East has run out of hearts. When East wins Kx, he has nothing dangerous to return and the contract is secure. aceoftrumps.com darlingmagazine.co.uk | june-aug 2014 37

Hair today, gone tomorrow
O
kay, I admit to a full-blown mid-life crisis. My friends are all worried, my doctor is dispensing pills faster than a pusher in Beverly Hills, and my husband is on the verge of moving out. I’ve reached the age of shall we say, ’39 plus VAT.’ Well, all right… ‘39 plus VAT, Income Tax and Capital Gains’. To counteract this, I have had my nose pierced, dip-dyed my dark hair blonde, gone to more festivals than a gap year kid, and found myself dancing naked under the full moon (sadly, not at a festival, but in my back yard). In defence, my insanity has been prompted by a ‘scary lump’ operation, the death of a beloved

pet, and a mother diagnosed with so many ‘elderly’ illnesses she doesn’t even remember that one of them is dementia. Life is short. I suppose, my most extreme ‘bucket list’ reaction is the latest… a nose piercing. Triggered by a birthday lunch I admitted I’d always wanted a delicate diamond nose stud. Ten minutes later, full of bravado (and Bollinger), I was in the Old London Road Tattoo Parlour queue, praying they were fully booked for the next decade. Alas, ‘Vesper has had a cancellation’, said a receptionist so tattooed she made David Beckham’s artwork look like a beauty spot. The reception itself was extremely cool, and very, very busy. I ignored the teenagers glancing at me in bewilderment, and entered Vesper’s room with deep trepidation. On went the gloves; out came the thick needle thing…. ‘What? No anesthetic?” In it went. Oh-My-God. The acute pain buckled my legs. Then, the second wave… the insertion of the actual jewel. As I released my talons from poor Vesper’s waist, I was reluctant to exit, aware my screams must have been heard in the waiting room. Possibly John Lewis. ‘Nah, for you I turned the rock music up real loud’, grinned the delightful Vesper. Grateful, I looked in the mirror again. I loved it. A perfect touch of nose-sense just in time for this summer’s festival season. Now, all I need is a splash of pink on my hair tips…
