elcome to this autumn issue, feeling re-energised after the summer, I hope. Even if you haven’t had a fabulous holiday away, you‘ve still had the beauty and magic of our summer here to enjoy. I believe that we can feel happy wherever we are as long as we appreciate the little wonders and joys in our lives. Autumn, and the new school year, always feels like a fresh start to me. But for some, parents and children, it can be an anxious time as they are facing a new school, a new class or just a new academic year. Sandra Nardi, from Parent Education Consultancy, gives her tips on how parents can support their children better in their learning and overcoming their anxieties. Choosing the right school for your child is such an important decision and often a lengthy process. We have fantastic schools in our area and we’ve featured a selection of independent schools sharing their values and what they have to offer. Our inspiring woman, Daryl Maisey, is passionate about education and strives to raise standards in teaching and safeguarding children. This issue has even more back-to-school advice, as Muriel Mueller from MuMu Yoga tells us how yoga helps to calm young people, and Richmond Bridge Club welcomes anyone to the brilliant brain exercise that is bridge. And there is much more great reading from both our regular contributors as well as new ones.
Contributors Lyndsay Russell, Paul Mendelson

Raising education standards and safeguarding children are passions for Daryl Maisey
Darling met with the local educationalist at her home in North Kingston By Marja-Leena Toseland
D
aryl Maisey is a Director of Teaching, Learning and Quality in the School of Education within the joint faculty of Health, Social Care and Education run between Kingston University and St George’s, University of London. She’s also a published researcher in areas of safeguarding and child protection and is currently working on her doctorate in inter-professional expertise and safeguarding in early years education. Daryl moved to Kingston when she was just seven years old. She attended Latchmere Primary School followed by Coombe Girls School for her secondary education. In fact, her husband, Paul, is a Latchmere old-boy and their two daughters, Samantha and Hannah, were pupils there too. Ten years of her twenty year career as a classroom teacher were spent teaching at Latchmere before Daryl moved into higher education 10 years ago. Your professional focus is to raise standards in education. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

..................... the challenges reported by teachers, practitioners, families and children. I began to look more closely at how education can better support achievement for all. Education is not an isolated activity. It involves many encounters with many people in many different contexts. As a result I began looking at what it means to be an education professional and how we can work more effectively with other professionals to support children and their families. For me education is about recognising, valuing and nurturing talent. Everyone has talent.”
“Education is all about discovery. Whether I work with children or adults, it is the moment when I see the ‘spark’ that ignites curiosity and changes the way they are thinking. It can often be seen as a physical response; a movement, a facial expression or a spontaneous exclamation. From very young children to my oldest mature student, this moment is hugely significant. It is the moment when somebody changes. For me that is the most rewarding part. When my students have finished a period of study they often reflect on how much they have changed both professionally and personally. They feel that they have become more confident or have recognised what influences the way they do things. They have said how learning has changed their awareness of others: that it is ok to think differently and we must respect that in others.”
Do you have any words of wisdom and advice you’d like to give to parents whose children are facing educational challenges?
heard that they were looking for someone to develop programmes to enable staff already employed working with children to achieve higher qualifications. This was something that I felt very passionate about and so I stepped into the world of academia. Luckily for me I was taken under the wing of an amazing and inspiring mentor, Anne Rawlings, who continued working well into her 70s.
“Dialogue is paramount. We need to talk and we need to listen so that we can understand. Some children face very difficult and complex challenges. Parents know their children better than anyone else. Teachers, practitioners and other professionals get to know the children in different contexts; maybe at a hospital, in a clinic, at school or in an early years setting. But this is not the same as truly ‘knowing’ them. There are times when children behave differently depending upon where they are and whom they are with, just like we do as adults. We need to work together to really know and understand how to best support children; what it is they need and how we can offer that.
As time went on I became more and more interested in
As an educationalist I have always wanted my pupils and students
What led you, as a classroom teacher, to become an academic? “I have always enjoyed learning but my move into academia was really quite bizarre! I was working as a nursery class teacher when I had an unfortunate accident that meant working with the youngest children became very difficult for me physically. But I wasn’t ready to give up teaching; a job that I loved. At the time I was also supporting trainee teachers new to the profession and had been liaising regularly with different higher education organisations. I found this incredibly interesting. I had just completed a master’s degree at Kingston University and

..................... to succeed and I wanted the best for them. I’m the first to admit that I haven’t always got it right. But I have seen that dialogue does make the difference. Relationships between all those involved with a child can develop into mutual trust of different expertise and a collegiate confidence that can support a child most effectively.” What are your passions and interests outside your busy career? “I really like walking, travel, socialising with family and
friends, theatre and music. I also play the piano, but not anywhere as well as I used to. I know this because my husband bought me an electric piano for Christmas and then for my birthday he bought some headphones, so no one would have to listen to me! I am very fortunate to have an amazing family. They have all achieved so much in so many different ways. I am incredibly proud of them all. My mother, who at 81 is still teaching dressmaking and learning new techniques, inspires me to keep learning.”

reparing your children for a new school, or their first day back in a new year and a new class group, can be a nostalgic time for parents. Your anxiety has been busily suppressed by acquiring new shiny shoes, fresh uniforms and sharp pencils; however, children entwine trepidation with excitement, wondering what adventures lie ahead. Perhaps you didn't get your dream school and felt the pain of buying a different uniform from the one you imagined. However, the moment you wave your children off into their new environment is a moment to be savoured.
sept – oct 2015 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
They will meet friends they are destined to meet and teachers that are destined to inspire them. Once your children return home each day, there are many ways we can support them. Many have after school activities and weekends are bursting at the seams with sport, music and parties – leaving little time to involve ourselves or maximise the potential of your child's learning experiences at school. As busy parents, it is very easy to slip into difficult cycles of 'nagging' and children reacting against a 'chore' of homework rather than the life lessons and experience of
shared 'home learning' about an exciting topic that would benefit from parents’ own interest and understanding. This new academic year, why not
try a new approach? Rather than cajoling your children to do their homework, up their grade or reach their potential, there are other ways to communicate our expectations during this new academic year into support:
•
Print off the school curriculum, taking note of the topics that will be covered.
•
Bring to life what they are learning by scouring the Discovery channel and ploughing through old movies – sharing knowledge through different mediums can empower you and your child and integrate you into their world, whilst watching their confidence grow.
•
For the younger ones, leave an assortment of pens and paper out on the kitchen table or devise a fun, yet educative game to motivate and engage them in the morning. If they still gravitate towards the iPad or the TV, that's okay – embrace what your ‘digital natives’ can teach you about the technological universe which they have been born into.
•
An understanding of educational apps will be a welcomed surprise for all your children.
Technology liberates us from our desks and no longer confines us to a nine to five working day. Likewise, learning is not restricted to the classroom and can easily be nurtured within the home environment. Embrace a new, innovative chapter in your child's life, while, as the days pass, the not-so-shiny shoes reflect the emotions of new beginnings for the whole family. A healing journey Jo Barlow tells how she found a way to overall better health with Gaia Healing
By Jo Barlow
somehow, I understand myself better. It’s a bit like looking at the stars and realising there is something much bigger than you! Since my initial course of treatment, I have tried various lengths of time between appointments and have found that if I go without a session for two months, then my period starts to get worse again, as does my general health and anxiety. But when I see Nicola at regular intervals, it keeps my health and energy at a higher level and my period problems at bay.
M
y healing journey began over twenty years ago when I realised that mainstream medicine wasn’t equipped to deal effectively with the health problems I had. These included chronic fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks and hormonal imbalances. When I came across the work of Louise Hay, I began to learn about the emotional causes behind physical health issues and I realised that there may be steps that I could take to make myself feel better. I have used homeopathy with some success over the years for myself and my children. I have also tried acupuncture and naturopathy. However, although these approaches sometimes helped with minor or acute conditions, nothing seemed to help with my periods, which were so heavy and so debilitating that on day 2 each month I was literally unable to get out of bed. Then, last year, I tried a new approach - Gaia Healing with Nicola Swan. Gaia is similar to Reiki, but the healing energy is of a higher frequency and so is more powerful. My first healing felt so beneficial, so calming and powerful that I chose to continue with a course of weekly sessions (six in total). After two sessions, my chronically painful shoulder joint - where I could not touch my hands together behind my back- healed sufficiently that my hands could reach again. Then, to my amazement, my periods suddenly improved dramatically - so much so that they no longer controlled what I could do, as they had for many years! I also noticed that my energy levels were much improved. During the sessions, I have a sense of past issues being resolved and my life beginning to make more sense and,

IT'S RUGBY FOR A CHANGE AT WIMBLEDON as the Rugby World Cup is about to kick off
I
t’s just a couple of weeks 'til the start of the 2015 Rugby World Cup at Twickenham and a rugby fever is spreading across the country, not least in our local rugby clubs. One club has perhaps even more reason than the rest to be getting excited and prepare for the competition and that is Wimbledon RFC. Wimbledon has a truly illustrious history dating back to 1865, making this year their 150th anniversary. They were one of the founding clubs of the RFU (Rugby Football Union) and one of their early captains went on to become president of the RFU and write the original laws of rugby (rugby types never say 'rules' only 'laws'). Wimbledon has recently gained promotion to the national leagues under the inspirational leadership of England and Harlequins number 8, Nick Easter. This makes the World Cup personal for many at Wimbledon and they hope to match the national team’s success with their own. The club president, Mike Kean, said “We have a very international membership base and we are all really looking forward to the competition. As an Irishman myself, I am obviously rooting for Ireland but I will celebrate
an English win against anybody else with the rest of the club, especially if Nick is in the team.” The 1st team manager, James Ogilvie Bull aka Bully, added “Being a World Cup year does make a difference. As well as Nick Easter, we have Nick Evans in our coaching team and a few other Kiwis and other nationalities in the squad. These lads won’t care whether their coach is on the pitch or not, as long as their teams win. It’s going to make for a great atmosphere in the club house especially for those games where we have played before the internationals kick off.” The club steward, Mick Edmundson, said “We’ll have lots going on and expect to see a lot of the members here for all the matches but we’re open to everyone. We’ll probably do some national themed food and entertainment and, of course, there will be some fervent speculation on the outcome. The overwhelming, if partisan, view from the members is that England could do it but it’s a tough ask. Being in the, so-called 'group of death' won’t help but we know our boys are pumped up and ready for action. The southern hemisphere teams have other ideas of course and New Zealand is always the team to beat but we’ll have to see off Wales and Australia first.” For more information go to: www.wimbledonrfc.co.uk darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept – oct 2015

brings calm to kids and teens
How yoga can benefit young people
A
n increasing amount of schools are offering yoga to their students, inspired by the positive impacts it has on the body and mind complex. Yoga is great for teaching young people to cope with the increasing pressures and competitive atmosphere within schools and empowers practitioners to make better choices. Learning about ways to focus the mind with certain breathing techniques is also very helpful when preparing for tests and exams. The traditional relaxation pose, usually taught at the end of a yoga class, helps to calm down over-stimulated, overly stressed teenagers.

Muriel Mueller from MuMu Yoga explains
Yoga boosts self-esteem and self-confidence. It also helps to deal with fear and anxiety and promotes a healthy outlook on life. Constant stimulation from social media and the use of mobile phones and computers can deplete healthy functions of the nervous system. Yoga offers the perfect way to relax, unwind and regenerate. It's essential to work with the right teacher who has the ability of tune in with young people, understanding their needs and promoting their strengths, as well as respecting their limits. Regular practice of yoga will help children and teenagers to be less reactive in stressful situations. Rollercoaster emotions common in teenagers are kept under control as yoga helps to calm the mind and transform individuals into balanced and peaceful beings. Yoga also facilitates a sense of achievement and freedom and instills a deep sense of inner contentment and happiness. Regular practice also corrects bad posture. On deeper levels it enhances concentration power, builds better focus and helps individuals to cope with the strains and stresses of everyday life. A GOOD IDEA! Sometimes, a “Good Idea” is so good that it runs and runs
T
wenty-five years ago, Kingston Rotarian, Peter Jarvis, had a Good Idea, one that he immediately shared with his friend and fellow Rotarian, Graham Child (my husband and long time resident of New Malden), and which they then put into effect with huge effort and enthusiasm with the help of other local Rotary Clubs. The Good Idea was a simple one – to give a great day out to disabled and disadvantaged children in Kingston. So on the second Wednesday of June 1990, a cavalcade of cars decorated with ribbons and balloons set off for Thorpe Park and those lucky children had a fantastic time.
More than 10,000 Rotarian volunteers make this possible, raising the funds to enable it to happen as well as helping on the day itself. In 1999 a new charity was set up – “KidsOut” – which has under its umbrella the June Day Out and which itself organises Fun Days and Toy Boxes for children in refuges, sensory equipment for severely disabled children and “World Stories” for children in their own languages as well as in English. www.kidsout.org.uk KidsOut – the fun &happiness charity - Registered Charity No. 1075789
A film was made of the event and this was sent to all the Rotary Clubs in Great Britain & Ireland so they could see what a Good Idea it had been. It was made into an annual event, and now hundreds of Rotary Clubs are doing the same – always on the second Wednesday in June – and over 25,000 children up and down the country now enjoy a great day out every year. 16

CONSTRUCTIVE UN-COUPLING Your options when separation is on the cards
It seems that the headlines are full of celebrities and their positive attitudes towards separation and divorce. Indeed, a move away from the harsh, often very stressful world of court litigation, when trying to resolve any issues about the children, or the financial matters arising out of divorce is something the family courts and the legal profession have been striving towards. When a marriage, or relationship, comes to an end there are various options available to resolve the parties’ issues and to achieve settlement. At Hart Brown we offer a wide variety of alternative dispute resolution options and have specially trained lawyers in our family department who can assist you as follows: 36 22

Mediation This is the process where both parties attend a series of meetings with a non-judgemental mediator who will assist with facilitating the negotiation process. It is helpful for the mediator to be a trained lawyer who has an in depth knowledge of the way the court would approach each individual case and is better able to guide the parties towards a resolution.
Collaborative Law The collaborative process involves a number of round table discussions between the parties and their legal representatives. The parties sign an agreement that sets out their intention to remain away from the court process and cements their desire to remain amicable throughout the negotiation process.
Family Arbitration Arbitration is growing in popularity and involves the parties engaging in the process of litigation, but in private away from the court arena often with a senior barrister taking on the role of the Judge. This is a particularly attractive option where confidentiality is important and the parties do not wish for the press to have access to their proceedings.
Negotiations through solicitors This is perhaps the most traditional way of settling matters and if appropriate, we would be more than happy to assist clients in reaching settlement without the need for court proceedings. At Hart Brown, we pride ourselves on really listening to our clients and tailor our advice to their individual circumstances. We are also able to refer our clients, where necessary, to other professionals, such as family therapists and counsellors to support them through this difficult period. We recognise that the easier the separation journey can be, the better the outcome for the family. We offer a free no-obligation options meeting and also fixed fee initial consultations. Local charity making a BIG DIFFERENCE in the lives of children and families in sub-Saharan Africa
S
treet Child Africa’s roots are in leafy Thames Ditton, and bustling Accra in Ghana; an unlikely mix perhaps, but one that has flourished for nearly two decades. Founded by local people around kitchen tables in Surrey, the group began raising money to improve the lives of street children thousands of miles away. The charity is still locally based and supporting street children, but now in eight cities and also working to help children remain at home and in school. Finding sustainable solutions for children living on the streets is a long and expensive process - children need long-term support to properly address the complex reasons behind their situations and to overcome issues they face with relationships, health and self-esteem. Strengthening a family situation can prevent children turning to the streets and it also makes financial sense. In Lusaka, Zambia, Street Child Africa supports women’s groups in impoverished communities, where mothers meet regularly to discuss family nutrition, health and hygiene and the value of education and to improve their own skills in literacy, money management and creating marketable products. They also receive business skills training and help to set up a group savings scheme, taking loans from these savings to set up small businesses.
Melodie, the Women’s Self-help co-ordinator has seen first-hand the difference the groups can make. She comments, “The women have the opportunity to learn to read and write, learn how to handle business and to counsel their children.” This is a very successful approach. 82% of the children whose mothers are within these groups attended school as a result of the increased family income. This September some of our local supporters will meet these inspirational women, before embarking on a 480km sponsored cycle ride across Zambia. This ride is a fantastic opportunity for local supporters participating to see the work of the charity first hand, whilst raising all-important funds. James Cosmo, from Game of Thrones and Braveheart and a Chertsey resident is also a supporter. He said, "Street Child Africa is such a great charity. Anything we can do to lift children out of a life that we can’t even conceive of is important.” James has pledged to donate any proceeds from his forthcoming participation in ITV gameshow, The Chase, to Street Child Africa. Joely Richardson returns to Rose Theatre as QUEEN MARGARET
T
his autumn the Rose stage will be transformed into a battleground for The Wars of the Roses, a gripping adaptation of four of Shakespeare's history plays, directed by Trevor Nunn, a former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. A spectacular theatrical event not seen since it was first produced at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963. The Wars of the Roses is a trilogy of plays about the 15th Century conflict between the House of York and the House of Lancaster for the throne of England.
heir is an infant, whose throne must be protected by regents against the counterclaims of the most powerful baronial families in the country – the House of York, whose symbol is a white rose, and the House of Lancaster, represented by a red rose. Conflict is inevitable. The young King Henry VI is married, against his inclination, to a beautiful French princess who has already fallen passionately in love with another man. Meanwhile in France, young Joan of Arc wins historic victories over the English as, at home, the country drifts into Civil War.
Through these plays Shakespeare examines the very essence of human conflict. A tale of feuding families, murderous kings and adulterous queens, of scheming and betrayal, revolts and battles.
So begins a saga of violence and intrigue, of political and sexual deception, as the protagonists compete for both the English and French crowns – competitors in what has been described as Shakespeare’s game of thrones.
In the first play, Henry V, the ‘star of England’ after triumphant conquests in France, is dead. His

ebbs and flows as the throne changes hands. A powerless Henry VI becomes a pacifist appalled by the fighting; his beautiful French wife becomes a warrior queen, leading her army into battle. The white rose triumphs, promoting the accession of young Edward IV, but the red rose fights back and Henry VI is king again. As the white rose counter-attacks, nobody quite notices the emergence of an ambitious crookback youngster… called Richard. Richard III, so often presented as a standalone drama, the third play in the cycle is the climax of Shakespeare’s great chronicle of the fifty-year conflict between York and Lancaster, between roses white and red. You can see all three plays in a day or over three days from 16 September until 31 October. www.rosetheatrekingston.org

Surbiton’s future looks BRIGHT By Robin Hutchinson from The Community Brain
T
he Museum of Futures is an exciting, if unusual, project based in the Brighton Road in Surbiton. Taking over a formerly vacant shop, the museum will provide a space to allow people to pursue their ideas and ambitions - a base to encourage people to ‘curate’ their own lives and realise a future for themselves and their community that they’ve helped imagine. The idea comes from The Community Brain, a community interest company that aims to utilise people’s natural talents and energies to develop stronger communities and relationships. Surbiton, or ‘Suburbiton’ as many call it, has been a shorthand for all that is wrong with the perceived suburbs – parochial, petty and stuck in the past. For outsiders we are ‘The Good Life’ but always Margo and Jerry never Tom and Barbara. But many who live here believe there is much more of the ‘Goods’ about Surbiton than the ‘Leadbetters’.
Surbiton Farmers Market and Surbiton Festival. As a result we have a more visibly active and engaged community valuing the area with renewed pride. Alongside this social renaissance there’s been a significant commercial impact. Surbiton Food Festival alone has produced nine new start-up businesses in the area and fostered a ‘can do, will do’ attitude.
Over the last five years there has been a tremendous growth in community activity in the area. ‘Alternative’ fun events such as Surbiton Ski Sunday, The Kings’ Soup, The Seething Trycyclingathon and The Community Sports Day have developed alongside more traditional ones like The Surbiton Food Festival,
The Museum of Futures aims to build upon that positive community engagement, providing a base to enable more people to engage with and respond to community activity. To help develop a shared vision for the kind of place people want to celebrate and share with pride and to involve the broadest cross-section of the community in activity that will help deliver it. We also want to support the activity of Maple Works in allowing start-up businesses to strengthen their offer and share local knowledge and commercial experience. We’ll be working with the community on researching the space and requirements of start-up businesses that want to establish themselves in the area. Keep the heat in and the cold out this winter ‘With the cost of energy increasing continuously, what better time to start thinking about warming up this autumn’
T
he thought of a cold house this winter may be on your mind already. With the cost of energy increasing continuously, what better time to start thinking about warming up this autumn and reduce those winter bills. Look to extend or renovate and reap the rewards. PAUL’S TOP TIPS By adding a loft conversion you can certainly increase the insulation to your home. Building Regulation has become really stringent over the past few years with regard to insulating lofts.. The U-value (measure of heat loss) that needs to be achieved is very low in order to get your building control sign off. Your home would benefit from a loft as heat rises, and with the current regulations, should not escape. You may find that you are the only house in the road where the snow does not melt on the roof once you are properly insulated.
Double glazing is most certainly very beneficial to any home. Keep the heat in and the cold out. Haven construction works in partnership with Grabex Windows, who produce top quality, double glazed wooden, UPVC and aluminium windows, as well as doors at very affordable prices. You will wish that you had done this a long time ago. Rear extensions can warm up your home as well. New floors are insulated, the walls are of insulated cavity wall construction, and the roof is required to be fully insulated as well. ave you ever written a short play that deserves to be performed - or have you always wanted to? If so, the cornerHOUSE oneACTS plays festival needs you. oneACTS 2016 is a week-long
showcase of original writing which will take place from Monday, May 9 until Saturday, May 14 2016 at the art centre in Douglas Road, Surbiton. You can find all the information you need at www.thech.org or email oneacts@ thecornerhouse.org Jon Constant, chairman of the festival, said: "The plays need to be short – 15 to 30 minutes long – so if you have an original idea and would like to see it staged, why not have a go?
Tina Mastrocola and Bill Pretty in Julie Birkett's 2014 oneACTS play Windmills Picture by Jon Constant
A number of plays will
be selected by a panel of judges out of all those received and yours may well be the lucky one. Even if it isn’t, you will still get feedback to help you with your future writing." The deadline for submission of plays is Saturday, October 31 2015. After that, directors will be chosen, actors will be cast, and your work will come to life on stage. So, get your thinking caps on, put fingers to keyboard, and start writing – those judges are looking forward to reading your play. Please email your play to: oneacts@thecornerhouse.org

The Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Kingston were informed that this local charity needed support to raise funds to continue offering this invaluable facility and immediately agreed to attend the open day.

BOOT CAMP for your lawn
I
f your lawn is anything like mine, it will need extra loving right now to repair the damage caused during our recent very hot and dry weather. The fix is fairly simple, albeit a little time consuming, but it will be worth the effort. You know that when your grass looks good, it has an uplifting effect on all the other plants in your garden. In the last few weeks your lawn will have been starved of water, and as its top growth shrivels up, so does the amount of useful root system underground. Have you ever wondered why it is that grass can be burnt brown, and yet the
weeds within it remain relatively green? Yes, you have guessed it – these survivors have longer roots and can go hunting further for vital moisture. The trick of getting your lawn back to being the green of spring is to water extremely well and with great care. Take your hose pipe, and turn the end nozzle to a point where the water comes out at a decent spurt. Hold it in your hand with your arm extended downwards, so that the water penetrates with some attitude. My tried and tested system is to trace out about one
metre square in the lawn, and then I slowly track the water from side to side within my ‘square’ until I have completely hydrated the whole area. Then I move onto my next ‘square’. A garden sprinkler is better than nothing, but IMHO not a lot better as it won’t be able to penetrate as well. As a result, the roots will remain in the top layer of soil and when the sun bursts out of the sky once more, the grass is vulnerable to scorching, and we are then back to brown grass. If you’re tempted to feed your lawn, then it is much better to use a liquid fertiliser rather than spreading a granular product around the grass as this may well end up causing more damage if we get another heatwave. A good garden centre will be able to offer a range of soluble products, but do read the instructions carefully. FIGHT
to stop the flights! ROARRRR of engines overhead, sense the fuel pollution and feel the nagging fear as one plane after the other swoops over, that one could crash in the garden and crush not only your prize geraniums, but your home, your family and your entire neighbourhood (including the local pub).
“Morning, Lyndsay…” “Sod off, Jack”. I’d moan as I lay in bed at 5am. “How’s your headache?” I’d be asked five minutes later. “As if you care, Bill!”
N
o, I was not sleeping with multiple partners. I was living in Sheen under the flight path. The planes flew so low over my bedroom skyIight, I was on first name terms with all the pilots. Sadly, I know the truth of coping with early morning flights, late flights, daytime flights and alternative day flights. All hell. The dreadful drone of airplanes finally drove my family to Kingston - to escape. So those of you ambivalent about the THIRD runway fight, be warned. The new flight path is planned overhead. You have no idea how bad that actually is until you experience it. Imagine a beautiful day in the garden reading the papers, the birds singing, the wind charms tinkling like a Zen spa - then hear the 42
I back Zac. I’m behind Boris. Both are standing up to a Government greedily swayed by corporate wealth, ready to do an outrageous back track on their election promise. Internationals like Cartier and Starbucks are insatiable for yet more retail outlet space - and expanding Heathrow means more travellers trapped and bored in a terminal transfer with money to burn. Meanwhile, Spanish owned BAA, (who are pushing the third runway) are desperate for the extortionate shop rentals they will charge these companies. So, I wonder… how does this profit to global corporations (some who do everything to avoid tax) help the economy of England, other than minor local employment? Either way, the destruction of a decent quality of life and health for thousands of people is being callously ignored. A small cohort are putting money above all else. Call me an old hippy, (and too many do) but spiritually that’s really pretty sick. So as the pro-executives continue to lobby for their share bonuses, wake up - and join the last-minute fight. Or you’ll find Bill, Jack, Fred, Barney, Michael, John and Bob waking you up instead. More info: www.hacan.org.uk
