Where did the year go? The end has crept up on me again but I’m not complaining as I love this time of year; the lights are on and our homes have been decorated. There are gift fairs, parties, concerts, fabulous food and drink; and the presents of course. We are bringing you our top choices for the best places to eat and drink, to look stylish as the ‘belle of the ball’ whether your budget is high street or boutique, and fabulous, and a little different gift ideas from local businesses. On the cover, and as our Inspiring Woman, we have chosen a creative ‘doer’ who sees her ideas through to finish; actress, screenwriter and producer Vanessa Bailey. You might recognise her from her stint in East Enders or Channel 4’s Southcliffe or the current Pukka Pies advert. Darling is all about inspiring you, whether it’s in your working life with tips on how networking can boost your business or career, looking after yourself both mentally and physically, creating a home of your dreams or enjoying the best of the art and culture on offer locally. Did you know that Kingston is in the running to become London’s first Borough of Culture? Enjoy the family get-togethers, ice-skating, skiing, sunny escapes, wintry walks, mince pies and mulled wine. Until the New Year when Spring is on its way.

A ONE-WOMAN
POWERHOUSE ‘The most important thing in a project is to finish it’ Vanessa Bailey makes her ideas into film projects
I
first met Vanessa at the London Screenwriters’ Festival this summer at the premier of her short film, Seeing Him. It is very much her film as she wrote the script, played the main character Sophie and also raised the funds needed through Crowdfunding, in order to produce it. I loved the film and was hugely impressed by her and all that she had done to make this much celebrated film; it’s had a very successful run on the film festival circuit with 14 international film festival Official Selections so far and four award wins (Best Drama Short, Best Score, Best Produced Screenplay & Best UK Actress).
Photo by Palmer Photography Makeup by Rachel Barclay rachel@rachelbarclaymakeup.com
Vanessa has also appeared in EastEnders as Sarah Cutler, in Channel 4’s Southcliffe and BBC’s Sarah Jane Adventures, as well as in a range of independent short and feature films and in high-profile commercials too, including the current Pukka Pies TV ad. She’s also written Three Days, a short romantic comedy which explores a relationship between an older woman and a younger lover, as she does in Seeing Him. A really refreshing choice for a romantic story. We are of course used to seeing older men cast frequently with much younger women. She's currently in the early stages of working on two feature scripts – a comedy and a drama.

Now living in Lower Ham where her husband’s job brought them from Bromley, their house overlooks the river. No wonder she’s loving this part of London.
You are a brilliant writer as well as a producer and actress. How would you describe yourself professionally? ‘I am primarily an actress as that’s my job, but I see myself as a creator as I’ve had to bring my creative ideas to life myself by writing, producing, raising funds and acting in my films. I don’t like to sit around with an idea in my head, I like to make it happen. I don’t have all the skills an experienced producer or fundraiser has so I bring people into the project who really know what they are doing. I facilitate the project and make it happen.’ 6
Technology has obviously had a huge impact on film making and made it possible for small companies and individuals to make their own films. Can this have an impact on quality? ‘I think it’s a good thing that the film industry has been more widely opened up to independent talent through things like crowdfunding. It is now much cheaper to produce films as well as technically much easier. You can do so much on an iPhone even. The small indie film makers bring a fresh approach and sometimes more intellectual films to the public that wouldn’t be commercially appealing enough to gain funding through the more traditional channels. I think there is room for everyone. We can’t compete with
WINTER 2017-18 darlingmagazine.co.uk
massive blockbuster budgets but there are brilliant independent film makers there who are worth taking notice of.’
Did you want to be an actor from a young age and how did you get started in TV and film? ‘I’m everything that my parents made me into. I owe everything to my mum. My parents sacrificed a lot and worked incredibly hard. My brother and I were the first generation in our family to be privately educated; we got scholarships to a private school. First generation to go to university and the first to be immersed in the arts. I had piano and singing lessons. I had quite an unusual upbringing as I was part of an affluent set of my private school friends but
inspiring woman at the end of the school day I was picked up in my dad’s van with ladders stuck to the roof; my dad was a builder. I grew up in two very different social circles which has made me into who I am. I am super appreciative of the education I’ve had but it’s not the most important thing. I’m hopefully using it a way that it will benefit others as well, the way my parents would have wished me to. I’ve discovered that I have a strong work ethic too. I love working with people and discovering the talent they have and the magic in everyone. That’s why I like leading a team, bringing the magic together. I can be fierce but I’m also quite nurturing. I am focused but also flexible. My family is my be-all and endall. I have two daughters and a son who are 22, 20 and 18. My children are a gift and I’m immensely proud of the young people they’ve become. And my husband is the man behind the woman. He’s production managed for me and helped with my scripts, he really helps me to follow my dreams. He’s pretty amazing.
Filming Seeing Him
I’m a primary school teacher by training specialising in music and English. After the children were old enough for me to go back to work I realised that I didn’t want to teach any more. I always wanted to act but thought of that as a daft job. I had done a lot of drama at Uni. Did a lot of work as an extra. I was in Bristol at the time and there was a lot of demand for extras in dramas for TV. I loved it so much and got so frustrated watching other actors on set that I put myself forward for
extras who're required to say lines as well. These credited lines of dialogue allowed me to build enough credits to apply for a Spotlight membership. That’s where all professional actors are registered. Once I had that, I could get an agent. I then worked for free on independent short films which gave me a showreel so I could show my skills. I went in through the back door really as I hadn’t studied at drama school. I couldn’t afford it and and I had my kids at home to look after so could’t go away to study. I thought then that if I don’t try it now I’m probably not going to. People say to give it four years to break into TV and film and I’m pretty pleased with how it’s worked out.’ You can catch Vanessa in a BBC comedy and a Channel 4 drama series soon… (details withheld until these are on air). Kingston's COLOURFUL

T
he Kingston Characters project took North Kingston artist Ruth Blackford a year to complete and led her to meeting fascinating people and making some great friends along the way. The results of her industrious, but fun-filled, year is represented brilliantly in her exhibition of 40 large scale portraits at The Rose Theatre from 23rd January until 3rd March. “I aim to capture not just a likeness, but also the essence of the personalities – how they present themselves, their expressions, interests and foibles. Fabrics are carefully chosen to do this and painstakingly hand stitched together to form the base, then both hand and machine stitching are used for detail. Each stitch is carefully considered and placed – one tiny stitch just 1mm in the wrong place and the likeness is lost!” explains Ruth.
Pete the Feet
Originally trained in textiles, Ruth worked for many years as a designer of embroidered women’s and children’s wear selling to high street fashion labels both in the UK and abroad. But gradually, her work became more illustrative, and her fascination for people became the main focus. She started to photograph interesting people, ranging from people she already knew to strangers she would accost in the street! Initially she drew from the photographs, but her love of colour, pattern, texture and fabrics remained strong, and so rather than pens and paints, she began to harness her textiles skills, using cloth and stitching to create portraits. ‘My collection of portraits has grown gradually and most of the people I have depicted are connected to Kingston where I live, so I decided to focus on local friends, traders, and residents, and exhibit them in a show that celebrates the wonderful community I live in.’

Are we being savvy by networking in women-only groups? by Charmaine Mace
A
s a woman, starting a business and working on your own can be daunting as you won’t have colleagues to discuss an idea or problem with. Women in particular want local support, local networks and local advice – joining a womenonly group offers this in a supportive and relaxed environment. A lot of women are natural networkers. It’s NOT about shoving your business card into someone’s hand and hard selling. The women who are successful at networking are the ones who nurture the relationships, help each another in good and bad times and find opportunities for one another. I’ve seen so many women grow personally and also develop their businesses. Again, I think that this is because of our non-threatening environment. We laugh with each other…not at each other. Most women prosper in this environment. Some of them, when they first start networking, are so nervous standing up and speaking. I’ve been told so many times that because of the training they have in our groups, their “elevator pitches” or “60 seconds” are buttoned down and they can now stand up in all sorts of groups without have butterflies in their belly. This makes me chuffed. Over the years of doing networking, I have found that more people are now “getting it”. Networking is a good place to spend part of your marketing budget and to include in your business plans as long as you take heed of the “rules”. Being part of a network and maintaining relationships is about giving as much as it is receiving. Offer value without the expectation of a return and watch your success grow.
“I joined Athena not knowing what to expect and have been wonderfully surprised. This is a safe environment, with diverse women and has changed my business for the better, opening doors and creating opportunities that I never expected. I have not looked back.” Alexandra Willis mydoterra.com/alexandrawills “My decision to join Athena was one of my best. I knew it would give me opportunities I couldn’t achieve on my own in such depth – networking skills, business development and support; forging lasting friendships was the bonus.” Valerie Munro aka Auntie Planty auntieplanty.co.uk

Kingston Chamber of Commerce connecting businesses in Kingston over 100 years
by Natalie Crew Membership Development Manager
N
etworking is one of the most effective ways to grow your business, but it needs to be approached the right way for you to reap the full benefits. The Kingston Chamber of Commerce is one of the oldest independent networking organisations in the UK. With our long history and experience, we understand what businesses need in order to make the most of networking. Look to fostering long term relationships with a wide range of people, not just your target market. It is not about selling your services to the person next to you at breakfast. By establishing new connections you are building your sales team: people who will recommend you when you’re not even there.
Getting to know your fellow members and attending events regularly really pays off. Maximise your investment in networking by picking an event that’s right for you. If you’re not a morning person, an 8am breakfast might not be the best time to put yourself out there. Some people like the intimacy of building relationships over a relaxed lunch, while others prefer a more structured and targeted approach. The idea of pitching your business to 50 strangers at breakfast may be the perfect way for some to promote their business but it may also fill many with dread, so find out the format before you go and ensure you are prepared. If you prefer to build relationships on the golf course or over a glass of wine in the evening,
finding an event that suits you will pay dividends. The Chamber of Commerce is here to support our members and the business community as a whole. Our membership represents businesses at all levels and sizes, and our unique relationships with strategic partners like the London Chambers, the council, and Kingston First can facilitate valuable connections. We’re also committed to helping the local community and annually raise over £5,000 for our president’s chosen charity, this year it’s the Kingston Carers Network. Networking should be fun, and we try to plan events that are enjoyable such as the monthly breakfasts and lunches at some amazing restaurants and venues, from private dining at the French Table, Women in Business events to breakfast on a boat or even lunch in a prison! kingstonchamber.co.uk

The future is BRIGHT for local business
K
ingston’s business community was saluted for its vibrancy and innovation at the glittering Gala Dinner of the Kingston Business Excellence Awards in association with British Land & USS. The awards celebrate the hard work, achievements and successes of the Royal Borough’s 8,000 businesses. The fifth annual awards was hosted by founding partners Kingston Chamber of Commerce, Kingston Council and Kingston First at the prestigious Ravens Ait venue on the River Thames (Thursday, 12th October). Over 250 people cheered as Banquet Records, the iconic record store in Eden Street, was crowned Business of the Year, ahead of 11 category award winners at the event, compered this year by TV and radio host Becky Ives. Banquet Records, which was set up 15 years ago by Mike Smith and Jon Tolley, has built an international reputation for bringing top bands to the
Royal Borough. Mike Smith commented: “It’s an honour to be recognised – but for us it’s not about being the best business but about being part of a progressive and a vibrant Kingston. So, this award is for all the businesses who contribute towards the Kingston we love.” The annual business awards are open to all types of companies from start-ups to SMEs and large corporates, and celebrate all aspects of business including an award for Committment to the Community. One of the evening’s winners was Kingston Mortgages, who picked up Best SME Accolade at the Kingston Business Excellence Awards 2017. “Winning this Award is great recognition of everyone’s commitment and will no doubt be a great boost to the business” - Chris Poore, Managing Director, also highly commended in Entrepreneur of the Year category.

Will you be my attorney? What you need to know Barry Adamson
L
asting Powers of Attorney (LPA) enable a person to choose who they would like to make decisions on their behalf should they become unable, by reason of mental incapacity, to make those decisions themselves. Whilst much has been written about the need to make an LPA, the responsibilities of the person being asked to become an attorney are not so well publicised. Your first instinct is likely to be that, of course you would like to help a friend or loved one, but the following should be considered before agreeing to become their financial attorney: Best interests The cardinal rule is that, as an attorney, you must act in the donor’s best interests at all times. Keep your finances separate If you are taking charge of
someone else’s finances, it is essential that you do not mix their money with your own. There are some exceptions to this rule so it is always worth seeking advice. Banking If you need to use internet banking on behalf of someone else it is vital that you first register the power of attorney with that person’s bank and the bank confirms they have accepted that you have authority to act for their customer. Not doing so can be considered a crime under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 – something very few people realise. Expenses Unless you are taking on the role of attorney in a professional capacity (as the donor’s accountant or solicitor) it is most likely that you will not be paid for your time acting as attorney.
from the donor’s assets, even if you believe the donor would have wanted you to make them on their behalf, is extremely limited. It will be necessary to ask for the Court of Protection to sanction a proposed gift. We would recommend advice is obtained to ensure that any proposed gifts are approved. Following death The authority conferred by a power of attorney ceases upon the donor’s death. As attorney you do not have the right to close the deceased’s accounts or pass monies on to the beneficiaries of the donor’s estate. These are tasks for the donor’s legal personal representatives….as is the payment of the donor’s funeral bill. The developers of the tower seem to have ignored the rules that protect such views. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been urged by campaigners to have the top 12 storeys of the tower removed, sadly this has been to no avail.
The view is beloved by many of us, and also proved an inspiration to painters such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and JMW Turner, and Sir Walter Scott who described the view as “an unrivalled landscape.”

Photographer Paul Mowatt, who grew up in the area, photographed the view of the Kew Gardens pagoda on his way home from college one wintery afternoon in 1981. The great storm of 1987 took many of the trees down, seen in the original Black and White picture here. Subsequent development of the Richmond Cricket Club and London Welsh Rugby Club, with the installation of large obtrusive floodlights, has rendered Paul’s original view as somewhat ‘lost’. Paul says : “I only printed the negative after the great storm and I remember being quite taken aback by how much the landscape had changed due mainly to the storm. It motivated me to photograph more of these spectacular vistas, as I realised that these beautiful views can literally be lost overnight” To mark the anniversary of the great storm, Paul has produced a series of limited edition prints of his original view of the pagoda. Titled ‘from the pagoda’ only 75 will be produced, and each print will be printed on fine art Giclee paper, measure 12”x8”, and will be signed and numbered by the artist. Home spas and personalised skincare
I
our bathrooms are suddenly looking like beauty salons
spent an hour with Marion Couffon, anti ageing consultant with more than 10 years of experience in the industry, who explained the philosophy and science behind the many innovative ‘cadgets’ that her company has developed for home and also professional use. Marion demonstrated her unique Spa System on one half of my face, leaving the other side un-touched, in order to show me that even one treatment can have immediate effects, albeit minor as expected. Noticeable results will need a few weeks of regular use together with the specially formulated products. No wonder this is nicknamed the ‘face iron’ as it does just that, smooths out lines and wrinkles. It is used 20
to enhance the effectives of the products so they penetrate much deeper into the skin. I also discovered that some of these products can now be personalised to an impressive degree; age, sex, ethnicity, skin condition e.g. sun spots, acne and also preference for a SPF factor and fragrance. The products; cleanser, serum, day and night creams are delivered to you in capsules that slot into a dispenser. I have been applying their line corrector and the SPF22 day moisturiser every morning and the night cream at night. My skin is looking smoother and hydrated, even without the galvanic ‘face iron’.

Aligning the dialogue of head and heart Dr Mariette Jansen (Dr De-Stress) is a psychological coach who helps her clients to discover more about themselves and to take control of their lives and its challenges. If you are worrying about anything, share your questions with Mariette in confidence and receive a personal answer from her: mariette@drdestress.co.uk
Q: Dear Mariette, I am in a real state about Christmas. I want to do something different and am anxious about telling my family. Since my parents died four years ago, I have taken it on to host Christmas for my three sisters and their families (8 children and 1 dog) and now everybody takes it for granted that I will do that again. I have a very demanding job, a lovely husband, big house and no kids. This year I want to go on a cruise with my husband as we need time together. I don’t know how to tell my sisters and part of me feels very selfish. What do I do? Celia A: Dear Celia, aren’t you a lovely sister? Hosting Christmas for four years in a row. I bet your sisters were delighted to have the burden taken off them. For that reason, they will not be too happy with you this year. However, this reaction is not personal. It is about in-
convenience and effort. Their lives were much easier with you taking care of Christmas. Now they have to spend time, energy and money themselves. But, is it your responsibility to organise their Christmas? Are your sisters not capable? Is it selfish to look after yourself and your marriage? Even though family is very important, your primary relationship is with your husband and it is important to nurture and nourish that relationship as well as looking after yourself. I suggest you communicate your decision via an email, so each can digest the message first. You can explain your decision clearly, tell them you understand they might be disappointed and even though you will miss them, you are also looking forward to being away and getting some rest. I wish you a wonderful Christmas.

What every woman should know about
OSTEOARTHRITIS
Ali Mobasheri D.Phil.(Oxon) Professor of Musculoskeletal Physiology, Univ. of Surrey
O
steoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and one of the most frequent causes of physical disability among adults. It causes pain, swelling, impaired joint function and inflammation of the joints and leads to irreversible changes in bone. It is more common in men under 45. However, research suggests that women over 50 have a significantly higher risk of developing OA and other types of arthritis (except gout, which primarily affects men). Some of the risk factors are beyond our control, such as abnormal biomechanics (joint loading) and changes in our hormones as we get older.
So why do women get such a raw deal here? We don’t have a clear answer to this but some hints can be found in the female anatomy (hips, curves and so on) and the female hormone system. This is especially relevant when combined with excess body fat. The desease primarily affects knees, but hips and hands are also often affected. Women tend to have more flexible joints and this anatomical hypermobility causes laxity and increases risk for developing OA. Women’s bodies are designed to give birth and their tendons and ligaments in the lower body are therefore more elastic than men’s. OA in women rises significantly after menopause suggesting that oestrogen plays a part as it increases the risk of osteoporosis, making bones less dense and more fragile. However, taking estrogen (via hormone replacement therapy, or HRT) does not necessarily reduce the risk and this highlights the importance of several factors that are not beyond our control: excess weight, body fat and low levels of physical activity.
Obesity is one of the most important risk factors for OA and a range of other musculoskeletal problems. Excess white fat in our bodies acts as an inflammatory organ, releasing harmful mediators that exacerbate the symptoms of OA. For decades OA was considered a wear and tear disease affecting the elderly. It is now generally accepted that it is an inflammatory disease that can start in our teens and 20’s and manifest itself as early as our 30’s and progress further and faster when we are overweight. All this may sound depressing but the good news is that losing a few pounds can make a difference and losing weight can decrease joint pain and slow joint degeneration as well as benefit muscles, tendons and ligaments. “Obesity is one of the most important risk factors for OA and a range of other musculoskeletal problems. Losing a few pounds can really make a difference.”

De-mystifying TAROT CARDS A powerful tool for guiding you
W
hen people hear that I am a Tarot Card reader I smile and wait for their reaction. I have been working with Tarot cards and Angel cards for over 25 years and have found that the cards are a great tool in self discovery. The 78 cards in the pack can pretty much describe every situation we can possibly experience in life. My journey started with the Tarot when I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life. My health and marriage were in trouble and life became a challenge. It was at this time the cards were gifted to me. Prior to that I was a student of Vedic astrology, my other passion. The cards became a source of guidance and allowed me to access my true self; they became my ‘best friend’ and guide. As my connection with the cards deepened, I was able to access my intuition and align myself powerfully to my higher self. Realising my strong affinity with
them I started to do readings. The Tarot needs to be demystified as the benefits are practical and simple; it can give insight and guidance, also bring a fresh perspective to a situation you are experiencing. The cards highlight what conscious and subconscious effort you are exerting on your life and how these various factors impact your life. I pick up on any blocks you may be experiencing; these can be external, such as people and your environment, or internal, such as fear, worry and doubt. Whatever is on your mind will be highlighted by the reading. I bring you into the ‘now’ so you can focus and gain clarity. Once the cards are laid out in a spread, a picture of your current situation begins to unfold, like a story in my mind. My aim is to help you make more balanced and insightful decisions.
I believe the Tarot is an excellent way to gain a clear view of what you are thinking and doing, also where you are heading. A reading gives you the opportunity to focus on possible outcomes and examine influences around choices. By getting an impartial view often helps in making changes you need to make, in order to reach your desired results. If the path you’re on is not making you happy, you have the power to change it. You hold the key to your future.

Surrey showroom in Hampton Wick. With beautiful collections of high-quality bedroom, living and dining furniture, they are a first-stop for anyone looking for stunning painted pieces.
"We always strived to have something a little different in our Cotswolds showroom”, says Adam, “and, much as we love the oak furniture we grew up with, we were really struggling to bring some life and colour back into the showroom, everything was just a bit… well, brown!
Whether your style is bold and bright or soft and subtle, a freshly painted dresser, sideboard or table will revive your interiors and introduce a splash of your favourite hues to your home. Whatever your room’s décor, our passion is in providing you with a piece of furniture that is just what you were looking for, and is built to last a lifetime.
dam & Rosy Brown, the founders of the Painted Furniture Company, have been in the furniture and interiors business for many years, but the brand was really launched in 2010, when one afternoon they got a bit bored....
Just for fun we asked a supplier to paint one of our bestselling pieces in a nice grey green, the colour we always called the ‘Cotswolds window frame’ colour, just to see what it looked like. The results were stunning! We now had a collection of furniture which we knew was properly made and great quality, but we could now have some fun offering it in all sorts of colours.” The Painted Furniture Company, originally from Cirencester in the heart of the Cotswolds, have recently opened their first South West London and 34

When it comes to paint colour; the choice is yours. We have a huge range of colours as standard, each carefully chosen to compliment a modern colour scheme from classic whites to striking greys.
“In an age of mass production, we are proud to be hand building our timeless classic furniture here in the UK and keeping traditional hand crafting techniques alive.” “Producing good painted furniture is much more complicated than simply producing furniture and painting it. Over the years, we have developed the expertise, the contacts and the experience to ensure we supply our customers with the highest quality furniture,” comments Rosy Brown, Managing Director at The Painted Furniture Company. “For any product to be included in our furniture collections it must be the best of breed and offer a great value price point too.” The customizable collections allow for complete versatility in terms of colour and sizing. So, whether you’re looking for a sideboard to fit perfectly in the nook under the stairs, or a low wardrobe to fit under the eaves, they'll be pleased to provide something that fits your vision perfectly.

Why would you need an
INTERIOR DESIGNER? Gabi Da Rocha

T
here are many resources for the home owner to help you redecorate and restyle your home, from specialists like the Designers’ Guild through to the styling suggestions at B&Q! So why would anyone need an interior designer when you can do it all yourself ? In any profession, from law to landscaping, an expert can bring experience, knowledge and skill which will help you to get what you want. Whereas a conveyancer would help you sort out the mess that might occur when property boundaries are not clear, an interior designer will help you to create the environment you wish to live
An interior designer will know that certain shades of blue make a room look larger and that some colours of red will do the opposite. And she will help you design a room layout that will place the electrics in the perfect spot for the furniture that you choose – and that it will all work within your space. I have come across many people who have decided to ‘design’ their own rooms or entire homes and have sadly lived to regret it. Having spent hours finding and buying the whole list of things that they love, they find that when they are delivered the style doesn’t work, or worse, the furniture doesn’t fit into the space, and the money and time has been wasted. Employing
an interior designer could even save you money. Good professional interior designers belong to the British Institute of Interior Designers and their website is a good place to start if you are planning a change for your home. It's important to find an interior designer who will listen to your ideas and not force their own style into your home. This is a key part for me, and I have developed a process to do just that. It’s important for me – and for you – that your interior designer works closely with you to discover what you want from your home, and then help you to realise that dream.

Preventing your home DREAM from becoming a NIGHTMARE Sabine Carlson-Stenner
M
oving house can be difficult and expensive these days, so extending your property in order to improve its functionality and value has become the preferred choice. Your home is probably your most precious and valuable possession, so you want any renovation project to go smoothly. It is a false economy to think you can save the architect's fee and appoint a builder directly; a competitive tender process and a professional architect overseeing the work can save you a lot of money and heartache. Building works can progress quickly and, unless you know what you're looking for, you may not spot mistakes unitl it's too late or costly to rectify. Finding the right architect, builder and suppliers can be daunting. Architect Sabine Carlson-Stenner wants to share her expertise
having recently completed her own house extension and renovation project as well as many other similar projects in the area and also drawing on her wealth of experience as a commercial property architect and interior designer.
The question to ask is not ‘what extension can I have?’ It is more ‘how do I want to improve my lifestyle?’ “Remodelling your home should be fun and exciting, and the end result should be something you are proud of. As well as maximising the functionality of the space available, I am a fan of those finishing touches that make your home unique. These can include subtle lighting effects, clever space saving storage and statement features that give your home the 'wow-factor' – a unique look and feel, achieved without breaking the bank.
I have a great team around me and have built trusting working relationships with local builders, engineers and suppliers, which ensures that the essence of the design is implemented to the highest standards and best value. I am also a member of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors. You and your family's needs and wishes are always number one and will form the basis for the project. I am here to help you achieve your goals. I am concise and transparent about costs and will consult you at every stage. I can put you in touch with previous clients for any questions you may have. Email or call me for a chat and tell me about your home dream – I hope I can make it reality.”

WHO CARES for the YOUNG CARERS?
K
ingston Carers’ Network supports carers in the Royal Borough of Kingston and the Young Carers’ Project focuses on supporting children and young people between the ages of 5 and 18. It currently supports almost 600 young people, who have a family member living with them at home with a physical disability, learning difficulty, mental ill health or substance misuse. The project is constantly growing, and we are always trying to find new ways to support more young people who have a caring role at home. Our aim is to offer support and a safe place for young carers, a place that is just for them.
The 2011 census identified 178,000 young carers in England and Wales alone and when figures from the Northern Ireland and Scottish census are taken into account, the total number of young carers in the UK total at least 195,000. These young carers need practical support and we give this through: • One-to-one contact with a trusted person • Peer support on trips and outings with other young carers who might have similar experiences • After school drop in sessions offer fun with other young carers • Advocacy – providing someone to help young carers get their point across • We offer individual advice and information, and answer questions and listen
Typical day to day responsibilities for young carers can include: • Washing, cooking and cleaning for the family • Helping to wash and dress family members • Administering medication • Taking siblings to school or to the shops • Translating for a family member who cannot speak or hear, or who speaks a different language • Giving emotional support What are the implications of being a young carer? It usually involves them taking on more adult responsibilities than other people their age. This can mean: • Missing out on opportunities to play and learn, and becoming socially isolated • Their education can suffer if they regularly miss school to care for someone at home. They may need to attend doctors’ appointments with family members to translate, or take and pick up siblings from school • They may struggle emotionally, as they may not get emotional support from family members • They are often afraid to ask for help, in case they let family down or are taken into care kingstonyoungcarers.org.uk

Kingston joins the fight against FOOD WASTE
I
f food waste was a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China.
This shocking statistic should be enough for anyone to realise that food waste is a problem we need to act on, and it is something anyone can play a part in. Six Kingston-based businesses have partnered up with the free app Too Good to Waste in order to allow stores to sell surplus food to customers at the end of the day for a reduced price. Since this social enterprise came to the UK, almost 100,000 meals have been saved. More than1000 British restaurants, cafés and bakeries have already joined the initiative, including brands like Yo! Sushi, Chop’d, Sofitel and Mitchells & Butlers. Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go, said that “a great deal of environmental challenges pose a threat to modern-day London”, where statistics suggest food waste
costs the average citizen £200 a year. In addition, for every 5 bags of shopping purchased, one is thrown away with perfectly edible items. Through the app, users can now pick-up their pre-bought food before the closing of the stores, contributing to a growing movement that could lead to a more sustainable future. As Crummie explained, “what we perceive to be waste isn’t waste at all”. toogoodtogo.co.uk

South’s 2♣ opening bid was the strongest bid she had available; 2♦ was a negative and 2NT showed a balanced 23-24pts. North raised to game. Declarer has 3 spades tricks and one each in hearts, diamonds and clubs. You need three more. Crucially, you only have one entry to dummy. There is one piece of good news: West’s 2♥ lead suggests a lead from a 4-card suit.
COLLECT COPIES AT OUR 'HOTSPOTS' Please call first to check stocks Rose Theatre, 24-26 High Street, Kingston, Tel: 020 8546 6983 Fratelli Delicatessen, 55-57 Park Road, Kingston, Tel: 020 8549 8021 U.R.Beautiful, 1st Floor, Boots, 42 Union Street, Kingston, Tel: 020 8247 0386
If you use the A♠ entry to take the diamond finesse, it loses, and now you cannot get back to dummy to take the club finesse. But, here’s the thing: even if the diamond finesse had won, you could not get back to the table to take it again. So, you were almost certainly going to lose K♦ anyway - whoever held it. For that reason, declarer should win trick 1 with A♥ and lay down A♦ and then Q♦, continuing until K♦ is taken. E/W will take 3 heart tricks, but now you still have A♠ in dummy to reach the table and take the club finesse which, thankfully, wins.

point of view
TRIPPING at The Burning Man Oh God, do you think everyone’s going to spaced out on drugs?' my travel mate Karoline had asked me anxiously when we were heading deep into the Nevada desert. She was referring to a particularly lurid account of The Burning Man that had recently appeared in that bible of truth, The Daily Mail. I had no idea. But I did know it was the highly creative Mother of All Festivals. And to see why, you only have to Google BM Images… then triple the impact of those photos for the reality. Thousands of colourfully costumed festival- goers on sparkly-lit bicycles, plus insane, music-pumping vehicles in the genre of Mad Max meets Dr. Seuss, all circling giant art structures in the sand - created by the lovechild of Monty Python and Salvador Dali.
For eight days, a vast deserted desert plain is suddenly edged by a horseshoe of 78,000 people living in about 800 themed camps. In the centre of the wild, dusty landscape, a giant 100ft wicker man looms over the whole, surreal scene. Landing on another planet, is the nearest I can say to describe it. Going to the event is a radical challenge as you have to supply all your own water and food and survive in up to 110-degree heat. ‘Gifting to strangers’ is another special element. I came home laden with jewellery, poems, stickers etc., plus more (temporary) tattoos than Beckham’s left thigh. In return, I distributed English Breakfast Tea bags to those I met. You can take the girl out of England…. I’m not going to even try and describe the event further, because it’s just too awesome and impossible in 400 words. But I am going to describe what happened on the last night. I tripped heavily. Yes, shocked readers - I really tripped. However, not on LSD or mushrooms, but through the air. My foot catching on a ground-sheet in the dark. Suffering a ripped hamstring and a trapped nerve, I was flown home after a two-day stay in a US hospital. Total bill: $30,000. YES, that’s when I really thought I was hallucinating. Yet regardless of the ensuing flashbacks and rehabilitation, I wouldn’t have missed the festival for all the opium in China. A trip of a lifetime, that utterly, totally blew my mind.
