NO MADNESS in this method
One woman’s vision to change your body for a better life Darling editor enjoyed an elevating one-to-one session with the truly inspiring founder of Method Putkisto, Marja Putkisto, at her East Sheen studio
M
ethod Putkisto is an internatioally acclaimed body management programme, with its roots deeply in the Finnish philosophy on physical movement and wellbeing. Marja is originally from Finland and came to London 28 years ago. She lives in East Sheen with her husband and daughter. She has published 14 books; the “Body Lean & Lifted in 30 days” is available in English and Marja is preparing to publish her 3D Face Clinic and the Body Up books in the UK soon. The core of the Method is deep stretching and breathing, making it far more than an exercise routine. It’s actually a pedagogical teaching method on how to conduct our own body and it can be used in any sport or physical activity. The Method teaches us to take charge of our own physical wellbeing and put the practice into our everyday lives.
It’s like a new body language we need to learn to speak and understand. And it works for everyone, regardless of body

shape, fitness level, and with all the shortcomings and problems our bodies present. Harpers Bazaar named Method Putkisto as one of the most sensible, natural and effective ways for improving your body shape and overall condition. The magazine listed Marja amongst the six best body transformation professionals in the UK, in 2010 and 2011.
We are spoilt for choice when it comes to exercise regimes and body conditioning classes. Where did the inspiration to develop your own method for exercise and body management come from? ‘I spent the first year of my life in a cast leaving me in a static state and wanting to be free to move. This drove me to find a way to move and to use my body in a way that would be right for my physique. Not even Pilates, which both I and my academy teach, helped. I knew I needed to go deeper. I have always loved physical activity, especially dance, so I

joined a ballet school aged nine. Despite the difficulties, I continued enthusiastically, even after being told by my PE teacher that ‘I had no talent for any sport or physical activity’. By the age of 25 I was teaching at the Finnish National Opera, incorporating my methods into the lessons. I could see the change in the students’ bodies, movement, and even their singing voices. The original quest of the Method to elongate the short, tight muscles still applies. It became clear that I needed to understand thoroughly what the logic behind movement is in order to understand what really makes the body reach its optimum and potential. At the same time my own physiological challenges played in the background; I needed a well-functioning body for life, and very importantly, I needed to feel good in my body. I embarked on a long journey in search for answers and worked out, bit by bit, the ideas through my own body, studying different philosophies and information from around the world, picking what I felt were the right pieces for changing my musculoskeletal balance. I was determined to re-train my body and my brain as well.

I introduced this new knowledge into my own way of moving. This demanded total focus from me, emotionally and mentally. By giving my mind a ‘workout routine’ in order to drive the change, took enormous energy and dedication. I ignored many experts’ advice along the way, allowing my intuition to lead me. This work, over several years, led to Method Putkisto being born. During this time I had moved to London to study choreography at Goldsmiths University and later at Laban Dance Centre. For 25 years I have had my own academy with a team of professionals, now including 100 MP trainers and 10 studios; in Finland, London, LA and Geneva, all specialising in Method Putkisto.’ The Method Putkisto philosohy stretches to facial rejuvenation as well. This is a lot less well known and practised amongst the fitness and wellness aware public. Is your 3D Natural Face Clinic part of the overall body wellness concept or something for those more concerned with beauty and anti-ageing? ‘The 3D Facial Clinic offers a natural alternative to facial rejuvenation and I am so excited that we have had regular followers for over a decade. But its benefits go far deeper than the face alone, affecting the whole body alignment. Increasingly, sports men and

women are finding that the Method Putkisto Face programme ‘workout’ helps them and can also improve their performance. I never imagined it would be used by Formula 1 drivers and ice hockey players, but of course it is mostly used by ordinary men and women. The Method takes its inspiration from the earth, forest and Sibelius. You will find us in Richmond Park on Monday mornings - not quite a forest, but a place where we can respond to the challenges the different surfaces present outdoors. We’ll hang from the trees, literally, balance on logs and work on agility and balance and even rebuild how we walk to spiral our spines. The way we move outdoors is then translated into what we do in the studio. It is very Finnish in its simplicity. With the forest I refer to the lumberjacks and the way they used their bodies in the optimal way when rafting logs; a very common sight in Finland during the heydays of the paper and timber industry. Sibelius refers to the glamorous women of the past who knew how to carry themselves graciously and what a good posture could add; that was elegant, understated beauty. The British women have always mastered this so well. You have also found time to write and publish 14 books and trained a great number of instructors and your Method is taught and practiced by over 100 instructors and 10 studios internationally. What’s next for you? ‘I feel now that I’m one of the team and working for the Method. I was only 25 when I formulated and developed the origin of the Method (which remains the same) – and am working on it every day with my wonderful clients and instructors. I also work as a consultant to businesses, educational institutions and government departments in Finland. I’m really enjoying the work I’m doing with the Finnish equivalent of The Department of Transport with my new ‘Posture Angel’ service.
We are implementing important changes into the culture of work and ways of working throughout this industry: I hope to see soon if my formula can free thousands from tiredness and back pain caused by static office work. The Method offers tools for independence; freedom to move for the rest of our lives, and feeling good in our bodies.

Are we being savvy by networking in women-only groups? by Charmaine Mace
A
s a woman, starting a business and working on your own can be daunting as you won’t have colleagues to discuss an idea or problem with. Women in particular want local support, local networks and local advice – joining a womenonly group offers this in a supportive and relaxed environment. A lot of women are natural networkers. It’s NOT about shoving your business card into someone’s hand and hard selling. The women who are successful at networking are the ones who nurture the relationships, help each another in good and bad times and find opportunities for one another. I’ve seen so many women grow personally and also develop their businesses. Again, I think that this is because of our non-threatening environment. We laugh with each other…. Not at each other. Most women prosper in this environment. Some of them, when they first start networking, are so nervous standing up and speaking. I’ve been told so many times that because of the training they have in our groups, their “elevator pitches” or “60 seconds” are buttoned down and they can now stand up in all sorts of groups without have butterflies in their belly. This makes me chuffed. Over the years of doing networking, I have found that more people are now “getting it‘. Networking is a good place to spend part of your marketing budget and to include in your business plans as long as you take heed of the “rules”. Being part of a network and maintaining relationships is about giving as much as it is receiving. Offer value without the expectation of a return and watch your success grow.
“I joined Athena not knowing what to expect and have been wonderfully surprised. This is a safe environment, with diverse women and has changed my business for the better, opening doors and creating opportunities that I never expected. I have not looked back.” Alexandra Willis mydoterra.com/alexandrawills “My decision to join Athena was one of my best. I knew it would give me opportunities I couldn’t achieve on my own in such depth – networking skills, business development and support; forging lasting friendships was the bonus.” Valerie Munro aka Auntie Planty auntieplanty.co.uk

Release your
NATURAL ENERGY
T
he human body works constantly to repair and rejuvenate its cells in order for your body to function as nature intended. The foods we eat and the thoughts we think directly impact this process every day - either positively or negatively. The good news is, your energy levels and your overall wellbeing, can be dramatically enhanced by taking control of this process. It is possible to free out the natural energy in your body, to feel your very best and on top of your game - this really could give you the ‘edge’. I believe many people operate ‘below par’ because they digest thoughts and foods they are not designed to eat, both mentally and physically. Sadly, with an overload of misinformation in the area of health and wellbeing you may not even realise you are doing so. For most of us, life is always going to be busy, so here’s how to address what you think and how you nourish your body to ensure your energy flows at its optimum:
1. Aim to feed yourself positive thoughts – focus on what you can do and in the direction you want to go. 2. Take a moment - allow yourself ‘a moment’ or two during your day to simply observe. Wherever you are, Stop… and just look at what’s in front of you. Notice the colours, shapes and movements. Then notice how you can instantly feel calmer and more able to think clearly. 3. Focus as you eat - take the time to notice how your food looks, smells and tastes. This can increase your awareness about how they make you feel and to help you make better food choices. 4. Fuel your body - aim to eat real unprocessed foods in their natural state. Eat protein with every meal for more sustainable energy - think grass fed meats, wild fish, organic eggs and natural yoghurt.
Alex Jones is a qualified nutritional therapist, NLP practitioner and certified coach who helps her clients discover how to nourish themselves with real foods and great thoughts to help release their bodies natural energy to feel their very best.

Q: Dear Mariette, I am in a real state about Christmas. I want to do something different and am anxious about telling my family. Since my parents died four years ago, I have taken it on to host Christmas for my three sisters and their families (8 children and 1 dog) and now everybody takes it for granted that I will do that again. I have a very demanding job, a lovely husband, big house and no kids. This year I want to go on a cruise with my husband as we need time together. I don’t know how to tell my sisters and part of me feels very selfish. What do I do? Celia A: Dear Celia, aren’t you a lovely sister? Hosting Christmas for four years in a row. I bet your sisters were delighted to have the burden taken off them. For that reason, they will not be too happy with you this year.
However, this reaction is not personal. It is about inconvenience and effort. Their lives were much easier with you taking care of Christmas. Now they have to spend time, energy and money themselves. But, is it your responsibility to organise their Christmas? Are your sisters not capable? Is it selfish to look after yourself and your marriage? Even though family is very important, your primary relationship is with your husband and it is important to nurture and nourish that relationship as well as looking after yourself. I suggest you communicate your decision via an email, so each can digest the message first. You can explain your decision clearly, tell you understand they might be disappointed and even though you will miss them, you are also looking forward to being away and getting some rest. I wish you a wonderful Christmas.

very day our food ends up in our colon where it often gets stuck against the colon’s wall. Did you know that impacted faeces forms a dirty crust, which is the root cause of many health problems? Regularly cleansing our colon helps with a myriad of issues, both physical and emotional. Everyone should cleanse their colon once in a while if they are healthy. If you have health issues, a series of treatments is recommended. Scientists are now proving in the lab that your health starts in your colon. Whatever health condition you suffer from, a colonic cleanse will help you in some way.

What every woman should know about
OSTEOARTHRITIS
Ali Mobasheri D.Phil.(Oxon) Professor of Musculoskeletal Physiology, Univ. of Surrey
O
steoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and one of the most frequent causes of physical disability among adults. It causes pain, swelling, impaired joint function and inflammation of the joints and leads to irreversible changes in bone. It is more common in men under 45. However, research suggests that women over 50 have a significantly higher risk of developing OA and other types of arthritis (except gout, which primarily affects men). Some of the risk factors are beyond our control, such as abnormal biomechanics (joint loading) and changes in our hormones as we get older.
So why do women get such a raw deal here? We don’t have a clear answer to this but some hints can be found in the female anatomy (hips, curves and so on) and the female hormone system. This is especially relevant when combined with excess body fat. The desease primarily affects knees, but hips and hands are also often affected. Women tend to have more flexible joints and this anatomical hypermobility causes laxity and increases risk for developing OA. Women’s bodies are designed to give birth and their tendons and ligaments in the lower body are therefore more elastic than men’s. OA in women rises significantly after menopause suggesting that oestrogen plays a part as it increases the risk of osteoporosis, making bones less dense and more fragile. However, taking estrogen (via hormone replacement therapy, or HRT) does not necessarily reduce the risk and this highlights the importance of several factors that are not beyond our control: excess weight, body fat and low levels of physical activity.
Obesity is one of the most important risk factors for OA and a range of other musculoskeletal problems. Excess white fat in our bodies acts as an inflammatory organ, releasing harmful mediators that exacerbate the symptoms of OA. For decades OA was considered a wear and tear disease affecting the elderly. It is now generally accepted that it is an inflammatory disease that can start in our teens and 20’s and manifest itself as early as our 30’s and progress further and faster when we are overweight. All this may sound depressing but the good news is that losing a few pounds can make a difference and losing weight can decrease joint pain and slow joint degeneration as well as benefit muscles, tendons and ligaments. “Obesity is one of the most important risk factors for OA and a range of other musculoskeletal problems. Losing a few pounds can really make a difference.”

Home spas and personalised skincare our bathrooms are suddenly looking like beauty salons
I
spent an hour with Marion Couffon, anti ageing consultant with more than 10 years of experience in the industry, who explained the philosophy and science behind the many innovative ‘cadgets’ that her company has developed for home and also professional use. Marion demonstrated her unique Spa System on one half of my face, leaving the other side un-touched, in order to show me that even one treatment can have immediate effects, albeit minor as expected. Noticeable results will need a few weeks of regular use together with the specially formulated products. No wonder this is nicknamed the ‘face iron’ as it does just that, smooths
out lines and wrinkles. It is used to enhance the effectives of the products so they penetrate much deeper into the skin. I also discovered that some of these products can now be personalised to an impressive degree; age, sex, ethnicity, skin condition e.g. sun spots, acne and also preference for a SPF factor and fragrance. The products; cleanser, serum, day and night creams are delivered to you in capsules that slot into a dispenser. I have been applying their line corrector and the SPF22 day moisturiser every morning and the night cream at night. My skin is looking smoother and hydrated, even with-
out the galvanic ‘face iron’. CHRISTMAS OFFER: Marion is offering FREE DEMOS to Darling readers. For further information, contact Marion on 07768 256 556 marion@abcphotoweb.com facebook.com/groups/ liveyoungersmarter
Richmond joins the fight against FOOD WASTE
I
f food waste was a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China.
This shocking statistic should be enough for anyone to realise that food waste is a problem we need to act on, and it is something anyone can play a part in. Two Richmond-based businesses have partnered up with the free app Too Good to Waste in order to allow stores to sell surplus food to customers at the end of the day for a re-duced price. Since this social enterprise came to the UK, almost 100,000 meals have been saved. More than 1000 British restaurants, cafes and bakeries have already joined the initiative, includ-ing brands likeYo! Sushi, Chop’d, Sofitel and Mitchells & Butlers. Having set up their kitchen in February 2017 they are keen to celebrate their first Christmas with as many of their customers as possible and share their love of vegan cuisine. The ladies will be serving vegan mince pies, vegan sausage puff pastry plaits, mulled wine and their fine selection of vegan bubbles, wine and beer. try their delicious daily soups, which are packed full of fresh vegetables sourced from Streets (their local green grocer in St Margarets). At the weekend you can feast your eyes on their popular All Day Vegan Brunch Menu. Organic turmeric lattes have been immensely popular, as have their Green Giant smoothie which is packed full of kale, ginger and spinach to really detox the body after a heavy night! They also have a great selection of juices which are expected to be even more of a hit in January. Maggie and Claire will be serving up nutrient packed detox salads for those looking at healthier choices after Christmas. They are also keen to support those taking the Vegan Pledge in January 2018 for Veganuary. This movement challenges people to eat a vegan diet for the whole of January to reduce the suffering of animals, help the planet and improve
personal health. The campaign grew by 260% this year, with close to 60,000 people signing up and it looks to be an even bigger number this year. The Retreat Kitchen has been well received and these days it’s hard to get a table in the small but perfectly formed venue! Maggie and Claire have high aspirations for the future and are excited to be hosting a One Day Retreat in January (keep an eye on their social channels for details!) 16 Hill Rise, Richmond theretreatkitchen.co.uk

ONE PAVED COURT
a new space in town for contemporary art lovers Meet the team of artists behind it filmmakers. We particularly welcome new talent to showcase their work in a less commercial setting. We are always looking for new artists and are pleased to say that artists are increasingly finding us.” “The work we exhibit, and indeed, the talks, poetry, film and music events we run here, is a little different and often more challenging than what more traditional places offer. We want to bring great contemporary art to Richmond”.
Founders Kate Proudman, Judith North and Charmaine Stimson
O
ne Paved Court is a new art gallery and studio space in the heart of Richmond. Founded and run by a fa female trio of artists, one of whom is also an architect who's architect husband is the fourth partner. Together they restored this Georgian building into this functional space.
The recent Bruce and Flora Mclean UNSCRIPTED exhibition was this father and daughter duo’s first joint art exhibition. Bruce is often quoted as the Father of Conceptual Art, already leading in this field in the 60s, often working outside in the urban and suburban landscapes. Flora is a talented fashion
designer with her House of Flora label. She is known for her avant garde headwear, but also creates geometric jewellery pieces and angular sunglasses. She’s designed pieces for film and her work has been worn by supermodels on the covers of magazines. Visitors should expect an exciting programme of innovative, serious and stimulating work, and the opportunity to engage directly with artists working in a range of media. Artists are given the freedom to exhibit a diverse range of projects offering flexible terms and occasional studio hire. It's worth signing up to their newsletter for details on events and exhibitions. onepavedcourt.co.uk
The space offers an alternative to the conventional commercial gallery model. “We show work ranging from internationally recognised to local and emerging artists. They also host a variety of arts events including artist’s talks, and open our doors to community projects, musicians, and 20

Will you be my attorney? What you need to know Barry Adamson
L
asting Powers of Attorney (LPA) enable a person to choose who they would like to make decisions on their behalf should they become unable, by reason of mental incapacity, to make those decisions themselves. Whilst much has been written about the need to make an LPA, the responsibilities of the person being asked to become an attorney are not so well publicised. Your first instinct is likely to be that, of course you would like to help a friend or loved one, but the following should be considered before agreeing to become their financial attorney: Best interests The cardinal rule is that, as an attorney, you must act in the donor’s best interests at all times. Keep your finances separate If you are taking charge of
someone else’s finances, it is essential that you do not mix their money with your own. There are some exceptions to this rule so it is always worth seeking advice. Banking If you need to use internet banking on behalf of someone else it is vital that you first register the power of attorney with that person’s bank and the bank confirms they have accepted that you have authority to act for their customer. Not doing so can be considered a crime under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 – something very few people realise. Expenses Unless you are taking on the role of attorney in a professional capacity (as the donor’s accountant or solicitor) it is most likely that you will not be paid for your time acting as attorney.
from the donor’s assets, even if you believe the donor would have wanted you to make them on their behalf, is extremely limited. It will be necessary to ask for the Court of Protection to sanction a proposed gift. We would recommend advice is obtained to ensure that any proposed gifts are approved. Following death The authority conferred by a power of attorney ceases upon the donor’s death. As attorney you do not have the right to close the deceased’s accounts or pass monies on to the beneficiaries of the donor’s estate. These are tasks for the donor’s legal personal representatives….as is the payment of the donor’s funeral bill. act of parliament, and it is said to be the most expensive view in the country, which will be further bolstered by the recent refurbishment and sale of Doughty House, with a price tag of a cool £100 million.
The developers of the tower seem to have ignored the rules that protect such views. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been urged by campaigners to have the top 12 storeys of the tower removed, sadly this has been to no avail.
The view is beloved by many of us, and also proved an inspiration to painters such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and JMW Turner, and Sir Walter Scott who described the view as “an unrivalled landscape.”
Richmond of course benefits from other vistas too, such as the wonderful view of Petersham meadows and the Thames from Terrace Walk on the hill. It’s the only view in the country that is protected by an

Photographer Paul Mowatt, who grew up in the area, photographed the view of the Kew Gardens pagoda on his way home from college one wintery afternoon in 1981. The great storm of 1987 took many of the trees down, seen in the original Black and White picture here. Subsequent development of the Richmond Cricket Club and London Welsh Rugby Club, with the installation of large obtrusive floodlights, has rendered Paul’s original view as somewhat ‘lost’. Paul says : “I only printed the negative after the great storm and I remember being quite taken aback by how much the landscape had changed due mainly to the storm. It motivated me to photograph more of these spectacular vistas, as I realised that these beautiful views can literally be lost overnight” To mark the anniversary of the great storm, Paul has produced a series of limited edition prints of his original view of the pagoda. Titled ‘from the pagoda’ only 75 will be produced, and each print will be printed on fine art Giclee paper, measure 12”x8”, and will be signed and numbered by the artist. De-mystifying TAROT CARDS A powerful tool for guiding you
W
hen people hear that I am a Tarot Card reader I smile and wait for their reaction. I have been working with Tarot cards and Angel cards for over 25 years and have found that the cards are a great tool in self discovery. The 78 cards in the pack can pretty much describe every situation we can possibly experience in life. My journey started with the Tarot when I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life. My health and marriage were in trouble and life became a challenge. It was at this time the cards were gifted to me. Prior to that I was a student of Vedic astrology, my other passion. The cards became a source of guidance and allowed me to access my true self; they became my ‘best friend’ and guide. As my connection with the cards deepened, I was able to access my intuition and align myself powerfully to my higher self. Realising my strong affinity with
them I started to do readings. The Tarot needs to be demystified as the benefits are practical and simple; it can give insight and guidance, also bring a fresh perspective to a situation you are experiencing. The cards highlight what conscious and subconscious effort you are exerting on your life and how these various factors impact your life. I pick up on any blocks you may be experiencing; these can be external, such as people and your environment, or internal, such as fear, worry and doubt. Whatever is on your mind will be highlighted by the reading. I bring you into the ‘now’ so you can focus and gain clarity. Once the cards are laid out in a spread, a picture of your current situation begins to unfold, like a story in my mind. My aim is to help you make more balanced and insightful decisions.
I believe the Tarot is an excellent way to gain a clear view of what you are thinking and doing, also where you are heading. A reading gives you the opportunity to focus on possible outcomes and examine influences around choices. By getting an impartial view often helps in making changes you need to make, in order to reach your desired results. If the path you’re on is not making you happy, you have the power to change it. You hold the key to your future.

The Painted Furniture Co – beautifully British built just for you

Surrey showroom in Hampton Wick. With beautiful collections of high-quality bedroom, living and dining furniture, they are a first-stop for anyone looking for stunning painted pieces.
"We always strived to have something a little different in our Cotswolds showroom”, says Adam, “and, much as we love the oak furniture we grew up with, we were really struggling to bring some life and colour back into the showroom, everything was just a bit… well, brown!
Whether your style is bold and bright or soft and subtle, a freshly painted dresser, sideboard or table will revive your interiors and introduce a splash of your favourite hues to your home. Whatever your room’s décor, our passion is in providing you with a piece of furniture that is just what you were looking for, and is built to last a lifetime.
dam & Rosy Brown, the founders of the Painted Furniture Company, have been in the furniture and interiors business for many years, but the brand was really launched in 2010, when one afternoon they got a bit bored....
Just for fun we asked a supplier to paint one of our bestselling pieces in a nice grey green, the colour we always called the ‘Cotswolds window frame’ colour, just to see what it looked like. The results were stunning! We now had a collection of furniture which we knew was properly made and great quality, but we could now have some fun offering it in all sorts of colours.” The Painted Furniture Company, originally from Cirencester in the heart of the Cotswolds, have recently opened their first South West London and 32

When it comes to paint colour; the choice is yours. We have a huge range of colours as standard, each carefully chosen to compliment a modern colour scheme from classic whites to striking greys.
“In an age of mass production, we are proud to be hand building our timeless classic furniture here in the UK and keeping traditional hand crafting techniques alive.” “Producing good painted furniture is much more complicated than simply producing furniture and painting it. Over the years, we have developed the expertise, the contacts and the experience to ensure we supply our customers with the highest quality furniture,” comments Rosy Brown, Managing Director at The Painted Furniture Company. “For any product to be included in our furniture collections it must be the best of breed and offer a great value price point too.” The customizable collections allow for complete versatility in terms of colour and sizing. So, whether you’re looking for a sideboard to fit perfectly in the nook under the stairs, or a low wardrobe to fit under the eaves, they'll be pleased to provide something that fits your vision perfectly. “Whilst our website has helped us grow to be probably the largest specialist retailer of painted furniture in the UK, that wouldn’t have happened without the backup of a real showroom where customers can see a wide range of our collections, in a range of colour options, displayed in beautiful room settings. We are fully committed to keeping a high street presence for the business. The opening of our showroom in Kingston seemed an obvious choice for us and we’ve been delighted by the reception so far. eight major open spaces that include Hyde Park, The Regent’s Park and Kensington Gardens. Every year the Royal Parks are visited by 77 million people. The organisation Operation Centaur, partner of the project, highlights the importance of horses as collaborators in human work such as agriculture, transportation, conservation and therapy. Active mainly in London’s Royal Parks and Historic Royal Palaces, it also supports charitable projects and ensures the survival of the last working herd of the Shire horses. This breed was introduced into Richmond Park in 1993 to guarantee the sustainable management of the land. The herd contribute to rolling bracken for the preservation of the grassland, road verge cutting and timber extraction from the woods. South’s 2♣ opening bid was the strongest bid she had available; 2♦ was a negative and 2NT showed a balanced 23-24pts. North raised to game. Declarer has 3 spades tricks and one each in hearts, diamonds and clubs. You need three more. Crucially, you only have one entry to dummy. There is one piece of good news: West’s 2♥ lead suggests a lead from a 4-card suit.

If you use the A♠ entry to take the diamond finesse, it loses, and now you cannot get back to dummy to take the club finesse. But, here’s the thing: even if the diamond finesse had won, you could not get back to the table to take it again. So, you were almost certainly going to lose K♦ anyway - whoever held it. For that reason, declarer should win trick 1 with A♥ and lay down A♦ and then Q♦, continuing until K♦ is taken. E/W will take 3 heart tricks, but now you still have A♠ in dummy to reach the table and take the club finesse which, thankfully, wins.

point of view
TRIPPING at The Burning Man Oh God, do you think everyone’s going to spaced out on drugs?' my travel mate Karoline had asked me anxiously when we were heading deep into the Nevada desert. She was referring to a particularly lurid account of The Burning Man that had recently appeared in that bible of truth, The Daily Mail. I had no idea. But I did know it was the highly creative Mother of All Festivals. And to see why, you only have to Google BM Images… then triple the impact of those photos for the reality. Thousands of colourfully costumed festival- goers on sparkly-lit bicycles, plus insane, music-pumping vehicles in the genre of Mad Max meets Dr. Seuss, all circling giant art structures in the sand - created by the lovechild of Monty Python and Salvador Dali.
For eight days, a vast deserted desert plain is suddenly edged by a horseshoe of 78,000 people living in about 800 themed camps. In the centre of the wild, dusty landscape, a giant 100ft wicker man looms over the whole, surreal scene. Landing on another planet, is the nearest I can say to describe it. Going to the event is a radical challenge as you have to supply all your own water and food and survive in up to 110-degree heat. ‘Gifting to strangers’ is another special element. I came home laden with jewellery, poems, stickers etc., plus more (temporary) tattoos than Beckham’s left thigh. In return, I distributed English Breakfast Tea bags to those I met. You can take the girl out of England… I’m not going to even try and describe the event further, because it’s just too awesome and impossible in 400 words. But I am going to describe what happened on the last night. I tripped heavily. Yes, shocked readers - I really tripped. However, not on LSD or mushrooms, but through the air. My foot catching on a ground-sheet in the dark. Suffering a ripped hamstring and a trapped nerve, I was flown home after a two-day stay in a US hospital. Total bill: $30,000. YES, that’s when I really thought I was hallucinating. Yet regardless of the ensuing flashbacks and rehabilitation, I wouldn’t have missed the festival for all the opium in China. A trip of a lifetime, that utterly, totally blew my mind.
