FROM GROOVY CHICK TO

ABSOLUTELY GORJUSS!

Wimbledon’s secret powerhouse, Meera Santoro

Santoro, the company that built the Bang on the Door/Groovy Chick brand from a modest collection of fun art into a multi-million pound phenomenon, was founded by Meera and her partner, Lucio, in 1985. It really began as a hobby, something her father joked “would keep her busy”. That so-called hobby has grown from two people to over 80, with offices in the North of England, Hong Kong, Milan, and Wimbledon.

O

Photo Taylor Torr

ne of Meera’s earliest memories is of the time her father drove the family into London ‘to have tea with the Queen – only if she’s in!’ At the age of six, Meera, newly arrived from her native South Africa, absolutely believed every word. “It was the uncontaminated mind of a child who believes anything is possible,” Meera recalls. Yet last month, Meera was indeed invited to Buckingham Palace for a Royal reception, as Santoro had just won The Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade 2018. “I so wish my dear Dad was alive to see that surreal moment when we drove through the Palace gates!” And what did Meera say to Prince Charles who is keen on all things horticultural? “My Lady Garden has Fairy Lights!” Just to clarify, she was referring to the caption on a product she had created for a gynaecology cancer charity. “My Dad always told me that whenever you meet someone new, you should try to make an impression so they’ll remember you. I certainly did that! I really enjoyed meeting Prince Charles and made sure to tell him he was hotter in real life. Thankfully, he roared with laughter at both quips and demanded to know who I was!”

“I had two small children at the time and my daughter, Tara, remembers me saying, ‘I must ring Bang on the Door’, which obviously sounded funny. When Tara sat her entrance test for secondary school, the first thing she saw was a sea of Groovy Chick pencil cases on almost every desk”. Groovy Chick adorned over 4,000 products in its heyday, Winner of including stationery, apparel, toys, Brand of the Year 2000, toiletries and even yoghurt and Santoro’s iconic tinned pasta! Groovy Chick Santoro’s latest brand is Gorjuss – its biggest success yet - already in over 93 countries worldwide and growing. “She’s our little adopted child here in Wimbledon, we all adore her,” Meera says. “In fact, we have 32 fab, fearless, females in our Wimbledon Head Office and our latest addition is Bella, an apricot, thoroughly spoiled Cavapoochon puppy! I highly recommend everyone get an office dog - great for company morale!” Two years ago saw the launch of their luxury interiors and accessories brand, Santorus. Designs are inspired by the Santoro family’s Italian-Indian heritage and have resulted in a growing collection of opulent, statement pieces Meera to Prince Charles: “My Ladyshop Gardenlocal has Fairy Lights!”

High flying Meera and friends with Tamara Ralph of Ralph & Russo (in white dress) at their Haute Couture show in Paris

such as scarves, bags, tops and luxury stationery. Santorus collections are already available in high end luxury stores in the UK, China, Russia, and the US. An avid supporter of The Women’s Chapter, a networking and events platform for high impact women, she is a patron of The British Fashion Council Fashion Trust, a member of SBID (Society of British Interior Design) and E2E Entrepreneur to Entrepreneur – as a speaker at business events around the country. Meera is particularly proud to be the UK ambassador for the re-establishment of KwaZuluNatal Children’s Hospital in Durban, South Africa, Africa’s first children’s hospital. (Formerly a hospital, for white children only). In 1984,

Apartheid still rife, the hospital was closed by the government for offering services to children of all races in a section of the beachfront exclusively reserved for ‘white’ people. KwaZulu-Natal is the epicentre of the HIV epidemic globally, with the highest infection rate of any region in the world. Meera’s cousin who is spearheading the project caught the attention of Elton John who flew over to South Africa, spent two full days with her and held a fund-raising dinner at his home in the UK. The Elton John Foundation have funded the HIV wing of the hospital, now the Rocket Building. Meera says he has been amazing. However, there is still much to do and they are now working to raise £1m for the building of the Hospital Clock Tower, via donations of £1-£10 per brick. More information and a link to make a donation can be found on the Santoro website. Finally, Meera reflects on the position she is in today and the opportunities this may offer to others as well as herself. “We live in a time of such uncertainty. Whilst my professional success has been absolutely amazing, I feel I have such an opportunity to give back by promoting such a deserving cause, and it’s a wonderful feeling”. santoro-london.com

between two parents TORN Pam Custers on divorce

W

hen our children are hurting, so do we as parents. Doubly so when we feel it is somehow our fault. Divorce brings up a range of differing emotions that can be challenging for us and for children of divorced parents. Over half of families going through a divorce have children under the age of 16. When parents decide that they no longer love each other, children’s lives can be shaken. The level of upset is dependent on how the parents separate, their age, their understanding and vitally, how much support they receive. In our experience children may feel a sense of loss. Their way of life has been altered and they hanker for the original family structure. They may have unspoken fears of being left alone, when a parent leaves they may feel they may be left too. Anger can often be the default in children who are finding it difficult to express how they are feel. Children often speak about guilt, rejection and feeling torn between both parents.

On occasion, a wounded parent may feel it necessary to withhold the children. This is a complex situation and if intervention does not take place quickly then it can progress into parental alienation which has repercussions for the long term. The most useful thing to do is to protect them from adult responsibilities and worries. Impress upon them they are loved by both parents. Talk, reassure and be reliable and consistent. Try and keep home life as normal as possible.

Pam Custers

At the Relationship Practice we work with families and have a dedicated and highly experienced child and young person therapist. This multi-disciplinary approach is able to offer wrap around care that a family may need when there is such a fundamental shift. The key to a respectful and stable transition is in the support. We give support and guidance to both children and their parents at what can be a very lonely time. If your child or young person is experiencing any pressure then providing a neutral, experienced and supportive place may make all the difference to family life.

Pam Custers runs The Relationship Practice she is an experienced therapist working with individuals, couples and families. MA. BA (Psych) Hons and is a RELATE trained. MBACP (accredited). She leads a team of equally experienced specialists. Contact 07914 411729 pamcusters.co.uk

It’s a jungle out there! Being in constant contact with the external environment, the skin is subject to more insults than most of our other organs, says Louise Stewart from Nakedhealth Medispa

Louise Stewart

Y

ou need a degree to navigate your way through glossy ads which all offer “the latest anti-ageing ingredients”. Ageing is seen as a disease which most of us are trying to stop but the reality is that it is a natural process of living. When it comes to skincare the trick is to understand key ingredients which slow down the process and preserve your natural elastin and collagen levels thus maintaining spring and structure. Topical ingredients can stimulate a number of cellular processes which will improve skin texture, tone and clarity. These must be used in the correct dosage and be delivered into the skin with appropriate nano-technology. Gold standard skin care involves healthy cell turnover, prevention of damage, correction of problems and protection. Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Peptides and Sunscreen are the four key ingredients to include in a homecare regime and the best quality products are clinically proven to work. Vitamin C is particularly effective at reducing oxidative damage to the skin when it is used in conjunction with Vitamin E. Vitamin A has over 40 years research and more than 700 published studies

‘Sunscreen is undoubtedly the most important homecare product’ showing how amazingly it boosts collagen production, reduces fine lines, evens out discolouration, reduces acne and pore size. Peptides rev up collagen synthesis and strengthen proteins like elastin. This leads to a remarkable skin-soothing effect and overall rejuvenated freshness. Sunscreen is undoubtedly the most important homecare product. Harmful UV rays (present all year round) account for a staggering 90% of our visible ageing. Nakedhealth has been working with SkinCeuticals for over 14 years and was appointed one of two Flagship Medispas in 2011 which is testament to the knowledge of the team and the

confidence the brand has in the clinic. Understand what you are buying and how it combines effectively to make you look your best at any stage in life. “We carefully select our brands for their outstanding laboratories and ongoing research and innovation, so we are confident that our customers are getting the very best. Hair cuticle is the outermost, shingle-like layer of overlapping cells which look like scales. In a damaged cuticle the scales are raised leaving hair dry, brittle, prone to breakage and visibly unhealthy. This damage is usually attributed to exposure to heat as well as hair colouring and highlighting. Summer seems to be especially hard on our hair. Clients tend to go for lighter colours during that time and so colour stripping is a bit more invasive, hair is exposed to sun and chlorinated water, even the popular top-knot bun, so comfy in the heat, can have damaging effects. Autumn treatments we provide are effective in restoring dry, coarse and brittle hair. The main ones are: rebalancing, moisturising and reconstructing. Rebalancing corrects PH levels, seals the scales. It restores and moisturises hair intensely making it easy to comb. Your Parents NEED YOU Your Children NEED YOU Welcome To The Sandwich Generation

I Dame Esther Rantzen DBE

t’s no secret that healthier lifestyles and better medical care are helping towards increased life expectancy. Whilst this is good news, the growing pressures on the NHS and social care services, as well as on ourselves, cannot be ignored.

In response to this growing need for advice and information, the Really Helpful Club is hosting an event on Tuesday 6th November to help us tackle the challenges that increased life expectancy brings and how we can plan across the generations. Dame Esther Rantzen DBE will be giving the keynote speech. Dame Esther is the founder of The Silver Line, the UK’s only free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people.

A line-up of expert speakers will be offering advice, guidance and solutions on mental and physical wellbeing at every age, financial and legal planning for ourselves and our parents, combating loneliness, and advice on options for care and assisted living. Sarah Austin, Founder of the Really Helpful Club told us, “Many of our members are part of the so-called ‘Sandwich Generation’ - those with older relatives to support and consider, as well as children to take care of and provide for. It’s vital that we should all be aware of the issues and what we can do to plan ahead and to live our lives to the full. That’s why we’re delighted to welcome Dame Esther as our keynote speaker for this important event, along with our expert panel”.

D

o you have missing teeth? Are you avoiding eating certain foods? Are you unhappy wearing your current dentures? Why not consider dental implants? What are dental implants? Implants are titanium screws placed into the jawbones. Once the bone has healed around them teeth can be built on the screws to replace natural teeth that are missing. Teeth are either secured permanently to the implants or dentures are constructed, that are then secured to the implants. Titanium is regarded to be extremely safe and readily accepted by the body. How can implants help you? Implants have been revolutionary. For the first time a lost tooth can be replaced in its entirety all the way from root to crown. How many implants can I have done? Implants can be used to replace one, several or all of your missing teeth. Why get implants done? The major benefit is the avoidance of destruction to your adjacent teeth and they are not susceptible to tooth decay. What is the procedure? There are three stages to the actual treatment 1. The gum is lifted and the implants are placed into the bone. The implant is left to heal. 2. The gum is again lifted and a healing cap is inserted into the implant. The gum is left to heal 3. An impression is taken and a new tooth made to cover the post.

shop local

How long does it take? Every case is different but usually the healing after stage 1 takes 3-6 months. After stage 2 the healing takes about 6 weeks. The final teeth are fitted just 2 weeks after the impression at stage 3. Will it be done at the surgery? Most cases are treated at the surgery, usually under local anesthetic by your dentist. More complicated cases are referred to a hospital specialist. Free Implant Consultation At Infinitidental Clinic we offer a free 30 minute consultation with one of our qualified implant dentists. The Free Consultation will provide you with an opportunity to speak to the dentist about your missing teeth. You will walk away with a comprehensive treatment plan and full transparent costing to help you make your decision. Call Infinitidental Clinic on 020 8542 2171 to book an appointment.

House?

IS THERE AN ACTOR IN THE Local Wimbledonian Gordon House on life as the Head of the Radio Drama Department at the BBC and his current passion “You worked for the BBC all your life?” said a member of Wimbledon Common Golf Club to me disbelievingly. Well not all my life – I joined them as a trainee Studio Manager aged 22 and I retired several years ago. I’ve lived in Wimbledon all this time as well. If that suggests I’m a man of limited ambitions, all I can say is that working in Radio Drama for most of my professional career (I headed the Radio Drama Departments at both World Service, and Broadcasting House) was - for me - the equivalent of letting a child run a sweet-shop. I read English at Cambridge and spent much of my time acting and directing; now here was the BBC giving me the opportunity to produce some of the greatest plays in the English Language – and work with a succession of our finest actors and writers. For the World Service I produced plays shop local

by everyone from Shakespeare to Alan Ayckbourn. I directed five different theatre “Dames” and gave Ewan McGregor his second-ever professional engagement. In this time our small World Service team won over thirty national and international awards. So what did the BBC in their wisdom do? Shortly after my leaving to head BBC Radio Drama’s Domestic Department, they stopped broadcasting drama on World Service altogether. This decision still appals me. Our country is renowned for its acting and writing talent; so why not showcase it internationally?

my department in pay levels. My first boss at Jackanory was a woman, and it was there, as a young trainee TV director, that I first wrote The Princess & the Toad - a television drama that was to become the basis of the first of three children’s theatre plays that, since retiring, I have written for the Colour House Theatre at Merton Abbey Mills. They are very idiosyncratic reworkings of classical fairy tales and I direct the third of them Rumpelstiltskin & The Sleeping Beauty – next Easter. It’s very different – but just as enjoyable – as working for the BBC!

But no, I never thought of leaving the BBC. They paid me for indulging a passion! The current furore over equal pay at the BBC intrigues me; I worked in an area where women largely outnumbered men and at producer level there was certainly no great disparity in

EDITOR’S PICK The Wind in My Hair by Masih Alinejad I wouldn’t normally do this, but I found this book so fascinating that I felt compelled to give it a mention. Living in exile, first in London and now in America, Masih is a writer and journalist who was jailed, interrogated and constantly threatened for her feminist views on the suppression of women in modern day Iran, and in particular the compulsory hijab laws in The Islamic Republic, inspiring her to start a FaceBook page called ‘My Stealthy Freedom’ which has over one million fans and followers. Dance? LOVE TO

Jenni Kravitz’s Simply Dancing Partners has come to Wimbledon 12 years ago, I started a completely revolutionary concept - dance

classes where everyone is guaranteed to dance with an experienced professional partner. I have assembled a team made up of teachers and amateur competitors who are all highly skilled dancers and who love to help my clients to learn. They are charming and patient and it is a delight to watch the wide range of ages of clients and partners enjoying a shared passion for dance. In October we will be coming to Wimbledon.

Private Lessons At times to suit clients’ availability. Or you can have shared private lessons with a teacher and additional partners or two clients can share one teacher. It all depends on your budget. Latin Dance Workshop We teach Latin dance styles: either Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive or Samba focussing on the individual steps in considerable detail. We concentrate on the correct posture, arm movements and footwork and setting these into our muscle memory. This class is very popular as clients are leaning to dance well at the same time as getting valuable regular exercise. It’s Party Season

and

NC Supper Club is here to help After our wonderful summer of sun, it’s time to prepare for autumn. As the nights draw in we start to think about FOOD AND PARTIES for friends and family By Roz Hanna, Features Editor For an extra special party this season, I have the answer for you: NC Supper Clubs. Most of you, Darling readers, already know the founder, Nesan Thirunesan from suppers and parties featured in these pages, with guests including our very own Editor Karine. Nesan hosts supper clubs all over SW London and you can hire your own private chef to curate a bespoke menu for a private family dinner, large party or corporate occasion. Nesan explains: ‘My hobby is food and nurturing talent. NC Supper Clubs and Chef’s Kitchen Social help chefs and cookbook authors to showcase their dishes via supper clubs, photography and cooking demo events. ‘I love good food and giving chefs the chance to work their magic with a fusion of flavours and clever combinations of local seasonal ingredients, using traditional and innovative methods of cooking. ‘Some people have hobbies like playing golf or collecting classic cars. For me it is bringing talented chefs to an ever more food-savvy clientele. Londoners will travel across town to experience great food. I love being a part of that,’ he explains. I met Nesan at a Sunday lunch event showcasing the talent of Bobby Geetha, UK Masterchef finalist in 2016 and author of “Beyond Curry”.

Bobby now heads Asha, one of Asia’s Top 50 restaurants in Dubai and recently won Gold as Executive Chef of the Year in the Middle East Chef Excellence Awards 2018. His Keralan-inspired cuisine is living proof of how far we have come from the first ‘Indian’ restaurants in the UK in the 1970s, actually Bangladeshis catering to the old British love of ‘lumps of meat in a sauce’! Bobby’s dishes are perfect for our now-sophisticated palates. He flew over from Dubai to deliver a delicious 5-course menu, beautifully paced and flavoured, the aromas a reminder that Kerala was historically a spice trading capital. Our taste buds were awakened with Langoustine Achar, with tempered watercress puree, then tickled some more with Crab Masala Vada, featuring sweet pepper Rasam and oyster mushroom. Then came the confit and Masala-fried chicken wings with button onions on a sweetcorn and turmeric puree, a reminder that chicken wings can be truly appetising. There followed a memorable Red Mullet Moiilee, pink hoppers and heirloom carrot thoran. Chef Bobby explained to us that the calcium-rich scales are good for us, and he made them enticing by keeping them crispy. The finale was a Ilaneer Payasam, a baked Kerala banana and custard apple fritter, both delicately flavoured and deeply filling.

finally an extra-large helping of generosity from Nesan himself, who treats everyone who attends to complimentary Prosecco, wine and live music from a talented young musician called Alex – ok, you saw it coming – the icing on the cake.

The ‘feel-good factor’ was as palatable as the food – Nesan not only works with chefs curating a good menu, he curates a great event – with all the key ingredients (had to have that in somewhere, sorry) – great chef and dishes, eclectic group of people with one thing in common – a love of food and

HOME

IS WHERE THE

HEART

IS

Buying a home is one of the most important purchases anyone will make. Property expert, Marijana Molnar gives her top tips on finding the right solicitor

Y

ou have found THE property, your offer has been accepted and you are ready to move forward but how do you choose the right solicitor to guide you through the process? First, ask yourself ‘what am I looking for in a solicitor?’ Buying or selling can be a stressful situation for many individuals, therefore it is important that you find a solicitor that can provide you with a quality service, understand your concerns and can communicate with you effectively from start to finish, whilst also meeting your timeframes. The relationship between a client and their solicitor is predicated on trust and personal rapport.

34

autumn 2018 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

Some factors to consider: Price Price and service transparency means providing information at the right time to enable clients to make informed decisions about the nature of legal service they need. Price is not the sole arbiter, but for some, this is the determining factor. According to the 2015 yougov survey, cost of services is considered the most important factor when searching for a solicitor with 75% reporting cost as an influence. However, don’t always be tempted by the cheapest quote as it doesn’t necessarily

shop local

PEACOCK & CO Solicitors

Marijana Molnar

mean the best value. Most clients of legal services are interested in value and understand that a firm can be more expensive, but still good value. Get a few quotes before making a decision, but make sure they are like-for-like and compare the charges. Beware of hidden extras which can be added to your final invoice. Such hidden charges can include: a fee for dealing with leasehold transactions, completing the Stamp Duty Land Tax Return and acting for a lender. Ensure you obtain a fixed fee quote and confirmation of all disbursements that are to be included, so that when your final invoice arrives, you don’t receive a nasty shock!

Communication In this day and age it seems perfectly normal to ‘instruct’ a solicitor on-line. However, why not call the solicitor before you instruct? If you struggle to speak with someone, it may be a reflection on the service you are about to receive. Communication is vital in a conveyancing transaction. Updates are essential to keep all parties within the transaction satisfied. It is also useful to know who will have overall responsibility for your transaction and whether they will handle your case personally.

manage your transaction.

Timing It’s important to speak with and instruct a solicitor as soon as is practicable. That way, when an offer is accepted you will be ready to start without any delay, as all administrative matters should have been addressed (such as taking ID, signing terms of business and so forth), thereby allowing you to proceed smoothly and in a timely fashion.

Panels If you have a mortgage or are taking out a new mortgage, ensure the solicitor’s firm is on your lender’s panel. If they aren’t, you may well end up paying twice as your lender would have to instruct their own solicitor to deal with the mortgage aspect of the transaction.

CQS

Visit the firm’s website before instructing and see whether there are any ratings or reviews available for the solicitor/firm.

Lastly, check whether the firm you are instructing is a member of the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS). This provides a recognised quality standard for residential conveyancing practices. Membership achievement is based upon the integrity of the professionals, the firm’s adherence to good practice and adherence to prudent and efficient conveyancing procedures through the scheme’s protocol.

BRICKS AND MORTAR NOT JUST

OLBC provides architectural and interior design services, reconfiguring and modernising with sensitivity and style to meet the needs of family life “It’s easy to fall in love with a house without knowing exactly how it’s going to work for you as a home,” says Rosie Caley, design director and heritage specialist. “Whether figuring out what to do with a recent house purchase, or finally deciding it’s time to rework the existing home, most clients have a vision of what it could be, but get rather stuck on what’s already there. I can help show them how to reconfigure and plan the space to maximise both practicality and aesthetic”, Rosie has been designing family homes and interiors for private clients in London for over ten years, creating beautiful family homes that deliver on a practical level too. One of the most commonly feared aspects of taking on a building project is getting the relevant local authority consents in place. Swathes of conservation areas, listed and locally listed buildings in London add to the complexity, and the rate of refusals for consent to alter gives the strong impression it is a lottery. Rosie doesn’t feel that should be the case.

shop local

Rosie Caley

“Applying for planning consent is exciting – it’s about working out what is possible and presenting that logically to the planning officer. We have a 100% success rate for obtaining planning consents for our clients, because we understand these older buildings, and the planning process, inside out. It’s important for architectural alterations and additions to compliment the original building, whether in a period or contemporary style - there are no hard and fast planning rules with heritage buildings, they just need to be well conceived.” Space planning, interior design and heritage conservation are ideal co-specialties for the curious designer. Older buildings with a long history of change and adaptation need thoughtful consideration. But for Rosie interior design is also about delivering individually tailored solutions to families, not delivering a single vision of what a house should look like. “As a designer I love working around restrictions and limitations, whether unusual requirements; structural, planning or budgetary limitations – they all challenge you and demand simple, elegant solutions, which often go on to present more opportunities – it’s a virtuous circle. Design is about discovery. Heaven for me is finding out what home is to each family; their routines, needs, exploring floor plans and finding the solution that unlocks the design of the whole property. Perhaps I’m like the Miss Marple of house design– a spatial sleuth... I’ll speak with everyone, go detecting and gathering evidence around the house, eventually unravelling the mystery and revealing the answers!”

10th Birthday and New Studio Launch Oct 2nd 6.30 - 8.30pm

W The APPI Wimbledon clinic was established in 2008 by Australian Physiotherapists and husband and wife duo, Elisa and Glenn Withers due to a growing demand for a bespoke Physiotherapy and Pilates Clinic in SW19. The duo, who had recently opened its first clinic in Hampstead and was in the midst of setting up its international Pilates teacher training education business, had scoured Wimbledon for the perfect venue and found it just off the Ridgeway and only 5 mins walk from the High street. The clinic quickly established itself as a welcoming and inclusive centre where high quality, well trained and experienced Physiotherapists come together to educate, rehabilitate and inspire their clients. Since then,

the Wimbledon clinic has organically grown into four light filled and airy studios offering over 50 Pilates, Yoga and Barre classes a week and three treatment rooms offering Physiotherapy and Massage services. APPI continues to work closely with local doctors, consultants, sporting clubs including the All England Lawn Tennis Club, performing arts companies including the English National Ballet and community groups. Today, the entire team at APPI continues to strive to deliver the best and most positive experiences and outcomes for their clients and is proud of the welcoming space it has created for Londoners to come along and be inspired to achieve their movement and wellbeing goals.

ith two tremendous reasons to celebrate, we are inviting you all to please come along to our beautiful new studio and Physiotherapy clinic. We will be throwing open our doors to welcome you on a tour and meet our friendly team of Physiotherapists, Massage therapists, Pilates, Yoga and Barre teachers. You can also book for one of our free Pilates or Barre sessions or one of our Physiotherapy talks. There will also be local healthy food and drinks to enjoy while you better get to know us and all we have to offer you to help you fulfil your health and wellbeing goals.

W

e are also delighted to have partnered with local artist, Jo Holdsworth, who is exhibiting her extraordinarily beautiful 3.2m painting of Wimbledon Common in our Studio. It’s a must-see of a truly iconic local view.

Looking forward to welcoming you,

Elisa & Glenn Withers

VOICE OF AN Angel Robert Mingay-Smith Director of Music at St John’s Wimbledon

C

onsecrated on All Souls’ Day, 1875 by the Bishop of London, St John the Baptist Wimbledon was built to serve the growing population of the area. The building hosts a vibrant community with a never-failing warm welcome. I took over as Director of Music in September last year to join a wonderful team led by Rev’d Bruce Rickards. I inherited a fine choir and an organ built by the celebrated Hill, Norman and Beard Company in 1904. As with any new job one has aspirations and raison d’etre. Worship is at the heart of what we do at St John’s and for me the musical contributions to worship have to be of the highest quality. I bring with me a wealth of experience having been a director of music in Suffolk at the age of 16, held many prestigious posts in the meantime and toured the world as a member of VOCES8. I am also Director of Music at St Maryat-Hill in the City of London which is where I founded my professional ensemble SERAPHIM. The St John’s Singers are a cheerful, bright, funfilled, sociable and humorous group of wonderful people. We meet once a week to look at music for our services but to also work consistently on vocal technique and ensemble skills. Due to the generosity of our congregation, the St John’s Singers will be joined by four choral scholars in September this year. The choral scholarship scheme is part of my long-term plan for the music and outreach at St John’s. We continue our annual Fauré Requiem performance on Remembrance Sunday which falls in to our ‘Come & Sing’ category of events and look forward to our Family Come & Sing events which will begin in 2019. Come & Sing John Stainer Crucifixion has also become an annual event on Palm Sunday. The St John’s Singers are always looking for others to join them and I’d be delighted to hear from you if you would indeed like to sing with us.

Dealer South Please call firstN/S to Game check stocks N E S W 1S NB 1NT NB 4S West led ♣AKQ and then switched to 10♦, which South won. The contract now rests on how South tackles his trump suit. Unfortunately for the declarer, he made a common mistake and it cost him the rubber. He laid down A♠, and then crossed to dummy’s A♥. He led a low spade and, when East played low, he finessed with J♠. This held the trick, but West showed out. With no other trump in dummy, declarer had to concede Q♠ to East. If South had held nine cards between his two hands, laying down A♠ initially – in case West held a singleton Q♠ – would be the correct play but, with only eight cards between his two hands, the singleton Q♠ with West is most unlikely, whereas the 4-1 split will occur like this more often than one in ten times. The correct play therefore is to cross to dummy’s Q♥ and lead a low spade, finessing with 10♠. When this works, return to dummy with A♥ and finesse spades again. Now, when South lays down ♠AK, East’s Q♠ will fall and the game and rubber will be his. aceoftrumps.com

Party, Party, Party!

I know that many of us have all just come back off holiday and are into school term time, getting back into our autumnal jobs, etc, but – hey ho! As our Red Clad, White Bearded Friend would say- Christmas is around the corner! Do I hear you groaning? But don’t – Christmas entertaining needs organising and why not get your thinking caps on, dates in the diary and organise your Christmas event before anyone else grabs the date!!!!!! Once the date is booked, the rest is plain sailing – well it is if you call me!! I’ll pop over and discuss your requirements, put a menu together for you, organise décor, D.J, and anything else you would like for your party and then everything will fit in its place! Sounds fun? Then give me a ring. 020 8947 5337 | carole@partiestogo.co.uk | partiestogo.co.uk

Local Boys Break Guinness World Record OUR

ON A THRANDEM!

James Gilmour, Fergus Gilmour & Harry Fildes

O

n Friday 15 June, myself, Fergus Gilmour, along with my brother James Gilmour and a close friend Harry Fildes, made our way down to Land’s End with a triplet or thrandem, (bike that carries three people), in preparation to set off the next morning in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest ride from Land’s End to John O’ Groats (JOG) on a triplet. Our target to beat was 8.5 days, and we set out to do it in 7, averaging 127 miles with over 250kgs per day. Looking back on the experience, it was certainly a lot tougher than we expected it to be, from the hills in Lake District, to the headwinds we faced in Scotland, coupled with all too regular problems with the bike, meant 15-hour days out in the elements without support which was a fairly significant undertaking. This, however, was made possible by three vital components. Firstly, the drive to complete the task ahead and beat the world record, the sheer determination and positive attitude exhibited by my co-riders made the challenge achievable.

shop local

Secondly, the extraordinary support we received leading up to, during and after the ride was beyond our wildest consideration. Personally, aside from reaching JOG, a massive boost for us was the incredible reception we received when we reached Tarporley at the end of day 3. Jemima Cope (Harry’s girlfriend) had organised for many of Harry’s nearest and dearest to greet us, an amazing welcome with vital words of encouragement to help us tackle day 4 with a newfound sense of morale, as well as Liz who opened her cycle repair shop on a Sunday especially for us! Thirdly, and most importantly, were the charities we were raising money for (Whizz-Kidz and the Tarporley War Memorial Fund). Seeing the generous tally accumulate during the trip and thoughts of benefits the fundraising would generate gave us massive inspiration to succeed in the undertaking. We arrived in JOG on the evening of Friday 22 June, elated having obtained the new world record, completing the trip in 6 days and 13 hours. A massive thanks to my brother James and our close friend Harry for making the whole experience so memorable and for the support and generosity we recieved along the way!

Fifteen By Kate Greenhalgh

I

n ye time of Jane Austen, you used to leave your calling card, and if it was accepted (a big if) you got to pay a visit lasting 15 minutes. FIFTEEN! How brilliant is that? How have we got to this thing where if you want to catch up with people, it involves at least 4 hours? Drinks, dinner, coffee, chat chat, Uber at 11pm. And sometimes, like happened to me the other day at a school reunion, you get trapped for 3 hours next to a person with whom the only thing you ever had in common was total mutual indifference.

Even at the best of times, I’m seriously boring after about 20 minutes. 15 minutes is just the ticket! Quick burst of being relatively scintillating - enthusiastic greetings with the peeps involved, crisis news and gossip, bit of banter, desultory enquiries about family, boom, job done; before the listless, stilted stuff kicks in, and I start talking about the cat’s accident again, my kids’ career prospects (nobody cares!) and our plans to rent a villa in Deadly do Lobo. And isn’t the parking outside Sainsbury’s pricey, and have you tried the new smashed avocado place down by the Odeon? ‘Somebody’s boring me. I think it’s me’ as Dylan Thomas once insightfully observed. I suppose at least I don’t talk about books any more since I stopped reading them in 2012. It was Jonathan Franzen’s second novel that finished me off. Time was, I couldn’t start socialising until after I’d finished doing the kids’ homework and colouring in all the worksheets about

the Aztecs, before sitting in a suicidal coma during the Grade 2 violin practice. These days, I’m ready to meet up and socialise at 6pm. And if, like me, your work commitments consist of keeping your employer still pondering, “Hmm, how can we encourage them to retire without it looking like constructive dismissal?” (Tell me about it - Ed) then you are not kept late at the office either, so again, you are ready to socialise at 6pm. And be home by 8.30 latest. In order to watch some football on TV, even Salford City v Leyton Orient, because, frankly, it doesn’t matter when you have already nodded off. Can I propose a new etiquette amongst the Inbetweeners? (In between useful work and parenting years, and downright dotage.) We embrace our newfound freedom and utter exhaustion, and meet up for 15 minutes at a time, max, early doors. Enough time to down a pint and have - quite a quick - laugh. shop local
