editor’s letter Dear Darling Reader, Who knew? The Pepys of our Pepys Road was the great uncle of the more famous Sam, a certain Charles Pepys, 1st Earl of Cottenham, hence the pleasant little park that’s just one of the many which give our patch one of the largest proportions of green open space in South West London. I mention this because our apples are in glorious leaf, and green is the colour du jour, and a little digging revealed they were once part of the orchard of the Rayne family, bought out by one Richard Garth, Lord of the Manor, in the 1870’s to create the garden suburb that’s in our Summer Spotlight. hile many of her generation are facing up to a future in rental accommodation, at a mere 29 years old Emily Evans has bought not one, but seven houses and still owns six of them. She bought her first property at the age of 19, selling it three years later, by which time it was worth £50,000 more than she’d paid for it. Her portfolio is now worth nearly £1.4 million, generating more than £63,000 a year in rent, while her real estate business turns over another £120,000 a year. You might imagine from her confidence, good fortune and polished accent that Emily is a public-school girl with a charmed life and substantial trust fund. Emily’s parents divorced when she was 12 years old and subsequently her dad spent time in prison. She left her secondary school with a handful of qualifications that would never get her to university. ‘I want to stress that I have the most amazing Mum, sister, grandparents and friends, but my Emily (end right) with Lucy Alexander (centre) and her team

childhood was pretty tough,’ she says. ‘I could have gone off the rails. Instead, I put all my energy into making money. I got my first job as a cleaner when I was 12, earning £2.50 an hour. I wouldn’t change any of it though, as it has made me who I am today.’ Emily was introduced to the world of property aged 18, when she landed a job with an estate agent as a sales negotiator. The commissions soon came rolling in. ‘I was good with people, I valued honesty and I listened to what the clients wanted,’ she says. She was bitten by the property bug. Being a young female in the notoriously male-orientated world of property and finance has not been plain sailing, however. ‘I have encountered sexism, bullying and harassment,’ she says. ‘But I have never tolerated that kind of behaviour from men who feel jealous or threatened by the fact I am a successful woman. That was one of the contributing factors to me starting my own business.’ Emily has now moved to London to further her TV career and, for the first time in her adult life, is renting her home. ‘It is ironic, and so frustrating, the uncertainty tenants have to deal with is unfair and it doesn’t really feel like home.’ Emily is of the opinion a lot needs to be done to sort the UK’s housing issues out, ‘‘I approached the government to appoint me as a housing adviser because something needs to be done to help Generation Rent, I don’t know much about

We catch up with Caroline Randell to discover the amazing benefits of having your lingerie fitted by a professional

ater this year will be the 10th anniversary of one of London’s premier lingerie and swimwear boutiques. Caroline Randell Lingerie Boutique has become a shopping destination for A-listers, players from The Championships and residents of SW19 alike. With a combination of their unique fitting service and a stunning selection of brands, it is to no surprise that she has been continuously nominated for awards over the years, winning UK’s Best Lingerie Shop in 2015. Caroline and her professional team have fitted thousands of women in SW19 over the years, yet many of us still don’t have our bras fitted by experts. We talk to Caroline to catch up on why this should change. “The right bra can change your life, impacting your health, figure, self-esteem, confidence and comfort. Yet not enough women are making the most of the amazing benefits of having your bra fitted by a professional. Without a doubt, wearing the right lingerie has a knock on effect to how we feel, what kind of energy we radiate, and therefore how we present ourselves to the world. “A great fitting bra can make you feel more confident, not to mention how comfortable it

will be - you shouldn’t even feel it! It will drastically improve your shape under clothes, making you look neater, slimmer and more youthful. Posture can improve too, and it can help to minimize shoulder and back pain.” Caroline understands that having a lingerie fitting can sometimes be intimidating – but she says “please know that we are just women helping women and we promise to respect and care for you. Helping you is our passion and we warmly welcome you into the boutique”. We recommend visiting the boutique to experience their award winning and life changing professional service - you will leave empowered with benefits to your health, figure, self-esteem, confidence and comfort.

SUZANNE AND HELEN
Suzanne Lenglen (left) and Helen Wills, Cannes 1926 Jeanne Cherry Collection
Two Women, One Destiny: to be THE BEST By Darling tennis historian, Richard Jones from The Tennis Gallery in Wimbledon Park EXACTLY ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO
an extraordinary period in Wimbledon tennis history began. Between 1919 and 1938, two remarkable women took The Championships and the tennis world by storm. Through their intelligence, glamour and success, Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills showed that women could equal and surpass the achievements of men, and they provided inspiration to millions of women around the world. Frenchwoman Suzanne Lenglen played with style and panache in outrageously short skirts, bringing thousands flocking to the All England Club’s Worple Road ground. She won Wimbledon six times between 1919 and 1925, and was never beaten in a completed singles match throughout her career. America’s Helen Wills arrived at Wimbledon as an ordinary Californian schoolgirl and blossomed into, as one writer put it, “the most beautiful woman in America.” When Hollywood
16 summer 19 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
star Charlie Chaplin was asked what was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, he replied “Helen Wills playing tennis.” Helen succeeded Suzanne as the ‘Queen of Wimbledon’, winning eight titles between 1927 and 1938, and during that period lost just four matches anywhere in the world. The two superstars faced each other on court only once, in 1926, when reigning world champion Suzanne won narrowly against up-andcoming twenty-year-old Helen at Cannes on the French Riviera. The world’s press dubbed it ’The Match of the Century.’ The two women’s lives and careers then took very different directions, but they remained inexorably linked by an invisible thread: each had been brought up to be the best, and only by competing against each other could they achieve that pinnacle. Suzanne was a temperamental extrovert, bounding and leaping about the court as she swept her hapless opponents aside, whilst Helen
was sophisticated and demure, winning matches through tactical nous and the pinpoint accuracy of her perfect groundstrokes. Suzanne oozed sex appeal; Helen had the classic beauty of a Greek goddess. They both won many matches 6-0, 6-0, such was their superiority over their contemporaries. Their 1926 match should have been the start of a great rivalry, but fate decreed otherwise. Suzanne had won, but the scoreline of 6-3, 8-6 made it one of the closest matches of her career. Helen had shown she could not only live with the champion, but that she also had the weapons to embarrass her in many of the rallies. The match had an extraordinary false ending when, with Suzanne at match point, Helen’s shot landed in but was called ‘OUT’ by an excited spectator. The players had already shaken hands at the net when the umpire, realising what had happened, ordered play to resume. Suzanne completed her victory a few minutes later, but it was widely believed that Helen had the game to beat Suzanne the next time they met. Only there was no next time. Shortly afterwards an emergency appendectomy in Paris curtailed Helen’s tennis for the year, and later that summer Suzanne, temperamental as ever, stormed out of Wimbledon after a misunderstanding over scheduling which had left Queen Mary waiting in vain to see her play. A few weeks later Suzanne signed a contract for an American tour, thus turning her back on the amateur game and any possibility of a rematch with Helen. The tour was a great success, but afterwards Suzanne slipped quietly into tennis obscurity, the professional game having no other player good enough to challenge her. Restored to full health, Helen won her first Wimbledon title in 1927. In the years that followed she criss-crossed the Atlantic aboard luxury liners, winning four French and eight Wimbledon titles. Encouraged by Californian millionaire James Phelan, a former US Senator and Mayor of San Francisco, she also became a successful writer and artist. Forty years her senior, Phelan, a batchelor, was besotted with Helen. So much so that he arranged for the finest surgeon in Paris to take her appendix out. Mexican artist Diego Rivera controversially depicted Helen as ‘The Spirit of California’ in a mural commissioned by the City of San Francisco in 1931, and later claimed to have had an affair with her. Helen, dignified as ever, made no comment.
HOLLYWOOD STARS (L to R) James Stewart, Rita Hayworth, Helen Wills, Cecil B. De Mille Jeanne Cherry Collection
Suzanne watched as Helen’s tennis career blossomed. In a last desperate bid to compete again with Helen, Suzanne sought reinstatement as an amateur, but the French Tennis Federation refused her request. Even in her mid-thirties, Suzanne still had the game to challenge Helen, and maybe beat her. But it was not to be. When Suzanne was winning her first Wimbledon Championship back in 1919, Helen had been a schoolgirl starting out in the game. Two decades later, on the same weekend Helen won her eighth and last Wimbledon title, Suzanne died of pernicious anaemia in Paris. A state funeral was held, and Suzanne was posthumously awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest merit award. Helen played one final tournament in Dublin, the week after Suzanne died. In her typical enigmatic fashion, she rushed straight from the trophy presentation and was whisked away by an Irish poet in his Rolls Royce. She never played serious competitive tennis again. Nearly fifty years later, speaking of her retirement, Helen was quoted as saying: “I saw no reason to return to Wimbledon. But I would have gone to Wimbledon again for one reason. I would have gone to play Suzanne again.”

Positive Pause: “Take Charge!” online workshop With Pam Custers on The Menopause
W
hen the change happens
so do our relationships! The menopause happens at a time when so many other things are changing in our lives. It can often be described as the perfect storm or we can see this moment in our lives as a period to rediscover ourselves and our relationship. Some woman sail through the menopause but for some of us it is a turbulent time. Just when we thought we had our lives on track we are thrown into a heady and emotional storm that can put pressure on the most even keeled woman.
Regain your energy and start to take charge of your life. Interested? Then drop me an email with “Take charge!” in the subject line to info@ pamcusters.co.uk and we will send you a link to the next on line workshop. Using all the latest research you will be able to devise the best treatment plan that will work for you. Pam Custers is an experienced therapist working with individuals, couples and families. MA. BA (Psych) Hons and is a RELATE trained. MBACP (accredited) Contact 07572 841 388 pamcusters.co.uk
So what can we do? How do we claim this moment as a time to recalibrate and take the next step with vim and vigour? The menopause affects us all in different ways. It is as unique as each of us. We often stumble around looking for information that may or may not be useful to us. Apart from the universally accepted indicators of the menopause, hot flushes and no periods, we face a gambit of other symptoms. Rapid mood shifts, anxiety, irritability, fatigue and mind fog. Wouldn’t be wonderful if we had not just the knowledge but the skills to overcome these symptoms? What we know is that the most successful approaches have been a combination of CBT and Paced Breathing. So wouldn’t it be wonderful to be guided through understanding how these two approaches can be applied to hot flushes, anxiety, depression and other feelings and sleep concerns? Join me at a workshop held in the comfort of your own home where you will gain the knowledge, apply it practically to yourself and devise a strategic plan to reduce some of the unpleasant fall out and start to regain control of your life.

MENTAL HEALTH
THE LONELINESS OF MOTHERHOOD “Do you feel isolated and overwhelmed?”, asks Emma Parr, psychotherapist specialising in mothers and babies
B
ecoming a mum is life changing. There are expectations of how the birth will be and what the time will be like with the baby, particularly during the first year. The reality can be vastly different. The birth experience can be poles apart from what was imagined and time with a new born, although very special, is challenging. Lack of sleep adds to this challenge and this in turn makes learning something new more difficult and sleep deprivation has been proven to make us feel depressed. Becoming isolated, physically, emotionally and mentally in this new role is not uncommon. Just getting out of the door can be tough and with family often not living nearby, this can make it harder. Feelings and thoughts can become all-consuming when being in sole charge of your baby day to day, and doubts can creep in… ‘am I doing it right’, ‘am I good enough?’ Voicing how we feel can be hard, but to enable the right support to be received we need to speak up. So many mothers only talk about the joy of having a baby and that can make us feel like we are the only one struggling, and the isolated feeling is exacerbated. Lean on your partner and your family and close friends, those that you know will hear what you are going through. When you are offered help accept it, this is not a failing but a realisation of how monumental a task you are performing. Even with your partner, family and friends being around you, this may not be the exact support you need. For some speaking to a professional outside the family unit, provides a different space to explore the thoughts and feelings that are often difficult to express. My approach ensures
that you feel you can talk to me in complete confidence. I offer both emotional and practical support to help mums in any situation feel less isolated and more self-assured in this new chapter of life. MENTAL HEALTH
Survive and Thrive - The Secret Toolkit Sera Johnston is a Health & Mindset Coach specialising in supporting women raising children with disabilities, to reclaim their identity, health & happiness
M
any women pay more attention to health & mental wellbeing during summer rather than the rest of the year. You could end up feeling worse and not get the results you want. Yet many mothers raising children with disabilities rarely focus on their own long-term needs and when they do, consider it a “treat”. The truth is, this is not sustainable. Changes made for one-time events are based on judgement, guilt and comparing yourself to others. The key in making sustainable change in your lifestyle and wellbeing is with a clear sense of purpose and direction with the focus being you! So how is this done? Let’s consider 10 areas impacting your wellbeing and lifestyle: 1. Mindset - Your thinking impacts your behaviour forming your habits. Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.
2. Sleep - What’s the quality of your sleep? Use these indicators: • Do you feel refreshed when you wake up? • Do you wake up at the same time each morning without an alarm?
5. Water Intake - Drink sufficient water daily, that’s about 2 litres for most people. 6. Clutter - Hording clutter in your handbag, wardrobe, cupboards? This has an impact on your wellbeing. 7. Let Go - What is not serving you right now? Allow new possibilities to enter. 8. Movement - Even a daily walk in the fresh air improves your wellbeing. 9. Environment - Toxic people in your life? Do they enrich your life or drag you down? 10. Daily Rituals • Introduce meditation, gratitude, journaling and affirmations • Focus on what you want rather than what you do not want. Want to discover how to make sustainable changes and take back control of your health and wellbeing?
Exclusively to darling readers,

3. Stress - Eliminate if not at least reduce, or learn to manage your stress response. 4. Food - Food is much more than what we eat. The optimum time to finish your meal is 20 minutes. Eat until you are about 80% full is ideal. Check in with how you are feeling before you start.

Men are a fast growing group within the medical aesthetics industry and are particularly keen on minimally invasive procedures. Fuelled by the desire to become more youthful and competitive at work, sharing photos on social media and keeping pace with their women. Louise Stewart of Nakedhealth MEDISPA tells us what’s on offer Botox Botox is a quick, easy way to rejuvenate the frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet and forehead furrows. It is a perfect “fix” for men who can look a tad grumpy through repeated frowning. They can expect to look refreshed, rejuvenated and a little more approachable. Dermal Fillers Dermal fillers can help men have a smoother, fuller appearance. They are used to square off the jawline, reduce the appearance of jowls and build out the chin. IPL A high tech and quick treatment which zaps facial capillaries or uneven pigmentation is a popular choice for men who want to improve their complexion and look less florid. Hydrafacial Hollywood men give this a big thumbs up. It thoroughly cleanses the skin, reducing blocked pores whilst hydrating. The perfect facial for men.
hair. Very popular with men who have had enough of embarrassing shirt stains.
Moles and Lumps
CoolSculpting Even men who regularly work out can find it hard to lose the last bulges around the tummy, chest or chin. Coolsculpting is the gold standard treatment for eliminating these fat cells. With the beach in mind you need to plan as it takes up to three months from the treatment date. Laser Hair Removal Soprano Platinum is the quickest and most comfortable of all long-term laser hair removal methods. Popular areas are the chest, upper arms, shoulders and backs. A series of sessions are needed at 6 weekly intervals. Miradry A three in one treatment which greatly reduces underarm sweat, odour and
Men are more reluctant to visit the doctor but with the increase in sunny holidays and outdoor sports it is important to have moles and lesions checked. They can swiftly be removed whether for medical or aesthetic reasons. David Gateley, Medical Director at Nakedhealth MEDISPA says, “We have always treated men, they are reassured by a male Medical Director. See less of your scalp this summer!
Help stop hair loss with scalp micro-injections, using the healing properties of your own immune system to kick start the natural restorative chain reaction that begins to thicken your hair – with Bhavash Padhiar Do you remember last year when the summer holiday pictures had you with the perfect outfits only to be let down by your hair not being the lustrous thick flowing locks it used to be? Losing hair is a natural part of getting older. Everyone normally sheds between 50 to 150 hairs a day. Don’t worry, most people have roughly a hundred thousand hairs on their head and for each hair that falls out, the follicle will grow a new one. Thinning hair happens when hair naturally moults and doesn’t grow back as quickly or as thick as it used to. Over time the hair growth slows down compared to when you were younger and eventually stops growing altogether. The thinning process of individual hair follicles can take up to 10 years before the hair follicle eventually dies. Hair becomes finer, shorter and less dense.
The Answer
Luckily you have a window of up to a decade of your hair thinning to be able to reverse the decline of those weak and flagging hair follicles before they are gone for good. There are many products on the market to help to thicken
the hair from shampoos, serums, herbs and hormone controlling tablets. Many just do not work and some have very undesirable side effects. Remember time is ticking and the window is getting smaller so don’t wasting time with products that do not work. At Wimblederm, Bhavash harnesses the restorative components of your blood, combined with the correct vitamins and growth factors to stimulate hair growth. There is almost no downtime after the treatment. Most people go back to their normal day immediately without anyone else knowing you’ve just had something done. In only 6-8 weeks you will start seeing fuller hair and maintenance treatments not needed for months. We even advise on diet, hair products and supplements to help keep your hair in good shape. Bhavash has over two decades of training and experience as a clinical pharmacist in cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, chemotherapy and dermatology, and is based at the popular Lulu Blonde hair salon in Wimbledon Village. Their expertise and talent in hair care, colour and
style is an excellent synergy with Bhavash’s hair thickening treatments to promote your hair with serious summer WOW factor.

People talk of ‘the wild within’ as something that needs to be tamed, but being wild is a natural state
Necessity is
THE MOTHER OF ADVENTURE Darling asked a real life Indiana Jane, Catherine Edsell, why women need adventures?
I
consider myself to be a ‘Carpe Diem’ sort of person – seize the day! Historically, I’ve said YES to things I’m not sure I can even do, but figure out a way to make it work, and this has transformed my life into a very rich tapestry. I now lead The Matriarch Adventure, an adventure solely for women so they too can have the opportunity to push their own boundaries, expand their field of vision and step into the unknown, as it is only by moving into this area of uncertainty that we learn more about our resilience, our strength and our priorities in life. As a woman and a mother myself, I can completely relate to the neverending list of things to organise, people to care for, and the often monotony of everyday life. We all need to shake this up from time to time, and taking women into wild open spaces, sleeping out under the stars, tracking herds of desert elephants, is my way of sharing the beauty, the insight and the profound sense of calm that can only be experienced by doing something quite extreme. I’ve seen that this ‘call to adventure’ can stir up all kinds of emotions and reactions in the women who contact me. Their initial excitement at possible exploration is quickly undermined by their inner critic - “I can’t possibly do that, what
28 summer 19 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
if something happens, what about my family, who’ll look after the kids?” quickly followed by, “It costs too much money, I’m nowhere near fit enough, I can’t get the time off work, you know I’m allergic to insect bites, and what about malaria, rabies, Japanese tick-borne encephalitis…” And before you know it, they’ve completely put themselves off the whole idea. The thing is, moving through this discomfort, (not everyone enjoys being woken up by baboons shouting to each other in the middle of the night, or packing up camp at 6am to avoid walking in the heat of the day), really shows you that away from our comfortable and often cosseted lives we are strong individuals, often stronger than we think! When we return home to our ‘ordinary’ lives we carry that strength with us, our confidence rockets and we achieve more. People talk of ‘the wild within’ us as being something that needs to be tamed, but being wild is a natural state, it is a calm state. Spending too much time in our heads, divorced from the natural world, confined in buildings, away from real physical sensations, not using our bodies for the work they are designed for, these are the things that make us feel crazy! cathadventure.com

Is it your time to join a Body Mindfulness Wellbeing Break? With Shirley Ruetimann
“
To heal your body and improve its performance it is necessary to build a good understanding and awareness of your body - from where your muscles and joints are, to your posture, body position, and your sense of equilibrium
Our next break takes place near in Hotel Ola near Split in Croatia from 20 -25 October 2019 Call Shirley on 07767 686 010 for more information or visit bodymindfulnessstudio.co.uk/events-list
Method Putkisto is precise exercise method of deep stretching, strengthening and breathing that enables you to achieve in depth improvements to your body shape and performance. It realigns and redefines, lifting you to a good posture. Regular practice retrains your neuromuscular memory. 29 Unlike other exercise methods, our target is overall balance of your body - between your bony structure and soft tissues to achieve a strong, flexible and functional body. Achieving this balance requires an inner awareness of your body, but as this is the product of our experiences both conscious and unconscious, we can lose touch with it depending on our choice of lifestyle or reliance on habitual movement patterns. After many years of teaching classes and 1:1s in order to help people solve their body problems, I can see that despite good intentions progress is limited by lack of time to practice, plus appropriate skills and knowledge. However, just 4-5 hours a day over four days, can allow you the space to understand your basic anatomy, learn how to align your body, and problem solve independently. I think that potential for progressive change is truly life changing for everyone regardless of gender, age or level of fitness.

COOK’S CORNER Individual Summer Berry Logs
Carole Cory
Ingredients 6 slices of bread with crusts cut off 225g Redcurrants 110g Blackcurrants 450g Raspberries 150g Golden Caster Sugar
A lovely substantial summer pudding and no sharing involved!
Method This makes for 6 people and are individual summer berry logs. Firstly, rinse all the berries and place in to a large saucepan with all of the sugar. Cook over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved, and the juices are beginning to run. This will be anywhere between 3 and 5 mins. Take the fruit off the heat and take a colander and drain all the juices from the fruit in to another bowl. To make one of the logs: Take a piece of cling film and lay on a plate or board. Make sure the cling film is large enough to role the bread with all the berries inside. Take one slice of crust less bread and dip one of the sides in to the juice. Lay the bread down juice side down on to the cling film. Next fill the white side of the bread with 1/6 of the fruit. This is normally a rough estimate and you will have some that are bigger than others. If you want to be more accurate weigh the fruit and divide by 6. Get the sides of the cling film and roll the bread as tightly as you can and roll up the ends like a Christmas Cracker. Put in the fridge for around 5 hours. Repeat this process for all six logs. Don’t worry about having any juice or berries left over as you can use this for the decoration. To serve – When you are ready to serve take the log out of the fridge and remove the cling film carefully and decorate with icing sugar, other berries, mint and any remaining juice put into a jug on the table. Service with freshly whipped double cream or ice cream. Enjoy!

Dealer South E/W Game N E S W 1NT NB 3NT West led Q♥. Declarer assumed – as one should – that the lead is from a 5-card suit, South counted that East probably held three hearts, so she ducked two rounds of hearts, winning the third perforce with A♥. By this time, declarer needs to have decided on which suit she plans to play. Here, it should be clubs, as South can take a finesse into East’s hand. If this fails, East has no hearts to lead. If West then holds A♦, the contract is doomed, but this is the best chance. So, South discards a diamond from hand and plays A♠ and Q♠ from dummy, overtaking the queen with K♠ in hand. Now she leads J♣ and, when West plays low, she plays low also. When this holds the trick, South plays 8♣ to 10♣, which also wins. Now, she cashes K♣ and plays a low spade back to hand to cash A♣ and the winning spade. Just made! aceoftrumps.com

Parting to be much
sweeter sorrow
Years of lobbying have at last paid off with the announcement by the Government that they will introduce legislation to change the procedure for obtaining a divorce. In 1996 campaigners had previously thought that they had succeeded when legislation was brought in to remove the need for a spouse to blame the other as a necessary means to obtain a divorce. However, the move was met with fierce opposition from groups who claimed that the step would threaten the institution of marriage and the legislation was subsequently repealed.
42 summer 19 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
However, pressure for the removal of the basis for a divorce which is seen as increasing the hostility between separating spouses continued and in 2006 Scotland set a precedent by introducing a one year period of separation as the sole ground for a divorce. This resulted in a higher number of Petitions in the first year but in subsequent years there has been a downward trend in the number of divorces although this is set against a corresponding decline in the number of marriages. In England and Wales meanwhile, the contentious grounds for adultery and

unreasonable behaviour remained as the only routes open to a spouse wishing to end the marriage without having to wait for a given period of separation. This has been criticised by campaigners as not in the interest of either spouse and particularly harmful where there are children of the family as parental conflict is considered to be damaging to children’s wellbeing. Statistics also tend to show that children from broken homes do less well than others although it could be argued that a home is broken regardless of the grounds for divorce. It remains to be seen if a less antagonistic divorce process has any effect on this situation. Be that as it may, the Government appears to have accepted the arguments in favour of a less confrontational approach following a consultation process in which the responses were overwhelmingly in support of the need for change. They have stated that their aim is to shift the focus away from recrimination and blame to a system which will support parties in making arrangements for their own and their children’s futures. The proposed new process will remove the current facts that a party needs to cite in the Petition whilst retaining the current basis for a divorce, that is that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Similarly the current two stage process of there being firstly Decree Nisi and after a 6 week “reflection” period the Decree Absolute which finalises the divorce and ends the marriage is retained. There will no longer be the opportunity for one party to contest the divorce although the cost of doing so and the reluctance of Judges to encourage disputed Petitions meant that this was a rarely used practice in any event. A further step to encourage cooperation is the intention to
permit the issuing of a joint Petition by both spouses. The whole process will involve a period of 6 months from the issue of the Petition to Decree Absolute so as to ensure that the parties have sufficient time to consider the action they are taking and decide that it is what they wish to do. It is not clear as to how soon this change will be implemented and clearly there are other important matters occupying the Government at the present time which may affect this. It is unlikely that those who oppose any step which represents, in their view, an attack on the institution of marriage will be convinced by the decision and continuing opposition remains likely. It remains to be seen whether a change in the process of obtaining a divorce will lessen the hostility between separating spouses and bring about a concentration on future arrangements arising out of the breakdown rather than the means of obtaining the divorce. SCHOOL’S OUT The LGBTQ+ teaching controversy Solicitor-Advocate Sophie Khan’s perspective
R
eligion has always been a controversial topic. Now religious rights are being tested like never before. A Christian mother is considering taking legal action against Heavers Farm Primary School in Croydon after she and other parents complained that their children had been forced to take part in an LGBT “pride parade” without their knowledge or consent. It is reported that the Christian mother has now withdrawn her child from that school. It is not just Christian parents in Croydon who are raising concerns about the “equality teaching” at primary schools. Across the country there is a backlash against the Government’s relationship education programme which will be made compulsory for all primary school pupils from September 2020.
The complaints by the parents are that the relationship education programme goes against religious teachings about same-sex relationships. The parents are seeking to challenge the remit of the programme and find a solution which allows their children to be able to manifest their religious beliefs at school and be taught about inclusion and diversity. The focus by the primary schools on LGBTQ+ relationships goes against the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity as it specifically excludes the religious stance about such relationships from the programme. If the Government is to go ahead with the compulsory relationship education programme, then it will need to comply with equality law and include as part of the programme the counter-narrative to LGBTQ+ relationships as proclaimed in religious texts.
This will ensure that there is no infringement by the State of the rights of either Christians or Muslims to be able to manifest their religious beliefs. It will also allow the differing viewpoints on LGBTQ+ relationships to be taught on an equal footing. The suspicion of “social engineering” will be put to bed and an inclusive teaching environment will be the outcome. It is now time for the Government to consult with those who have felt excluded and to take into account the religious teachings, which for many, remain the cornerstone of their lives. If you wish to seek legal advice on whether you have a human rights claim against a public authority, contact Sophie Khan at Sophie Khan & Co., Solicitors and Higher Court Advocates on 07702 999 638. enquiries@sophiekhan.co.uk sophiekhan.co.uk

HOW GREEN IS YOUR COMPANY? With climate change threatening to devastate homes and landscapes it is important now more than ever to ensure your company is being as green as possible Take our short quiz below to get your sustainability score: YES 4 1.Do you use renewable energy? 2. Do you have centralised bins for dry mixed recycling, food waste and general waste? 3. Do you have energy efficient lighting and incorporate automatic switch offs? 4.Does your company encourage staff to travel less for business? 5.Do you procure sustainably sourced items? 6. Are your staff engaged with environmental issues?
Swapping to Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin is simple. By doing so you ensure the energy supplied to you is renewably sourced. Energy suppliers will match this with the estimated consumption of your business. Opting for this is a great way to ensure that your business’ carbon footprint reduces.
Great
Having central bins for recycling makes it possible for people to recycle. Giving staff the option to choose the recycling bin will ensure waste is separated correctly. If you need more help and guidance please get in touch with us at Green element. We can launch a recycling campaign for you.
Good work
Changing lighting across a building to more energy efficient options such as LED can make a big difference. It is a quick win with long lasting effects. There is an array of technology available, from automatic sensors to dimmable lights. This will also help reduce electricity costs.
This is great news because
Cutting travel down, especially if meetings can be held over Skype and video conferencing, can make a huge difference. Not only will this cut emissions, but it can save your business a lot of money. If air travel is a must, choosing Economy class over Business will minimise the emissions.
Great work. Putting pressure
This could be as simple as buying sustainably sourced paper and stationery or phasing out certain items such as plastic mechanical pencils. Indeed, if your business has a large supply chain, then it is important to ensure that sustainability is fed right through.
Wonderful working together ensures sustainable behaviour becomes the norm.
Getting people on board can sometimes be a challenge. Employees often need to know why certain things are happening the way they are in order to cooperate. Steps to raise awareness can be as simple as incorporating information into employee starter packs, getting a team of ‘champions’ together to run initiatives or putting on events for employees.
great work. Keep it up!
also make sure you have no under desk bins. This will mean you will save on cost (less money spent on bin liners, cleaners lining the bins and the bins themselves). keep it up. This should also help reduce your electricity costs.
business travel, especially flights, can often make up over half of many business’ carbon emissions.
on supply chains to provide you with sustainable products will help to reduce your overall carbon footprint.
Thank you for completing our survey. Now it is time to get your sustainability score. For all questions answered with a YES you gain 5 points and those with a NO gain 1 point. If you scored 6 – 15 your business has a lot of room for improvement. Don’t worry Green Element are at hand to help. We can come in and provide you with an audit. Following this we will devise a sustainability mobilisation plan. In easy to follow steps we can ensure that you drastically reduce your carbon footprint, saving money while becoming a sustainable company. If you scored between 15 – 25 you are doing well with some aspects of your company. However, there is still room for improvement.

changed SO MANY LIVES HOW RUTH
M
uch-loved Merton mother of two, Ruth Merriman, had a dream before she died – a wish for her friends and family to record her favourite song to help raise funds for her beloved charity, Jigsaw4U and immediately after her death, her hopes turned into a magical reality
“
Ruth was training to be an advocate for the charity Jigsaw4U in July 2018 when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. This charity, which offers help to children and young adults going through a variety of difficulties, has been instrumental in supporting Ruth and husband John’s sons as they as they have dealt with Ruth’s diagnosis and illness, and so it seemed fitting for the family to donate all funds to Jigsaw4U. “Out of something so tragic,” says John, “has come something so very beautiful that will impact thousands of people.” Ruth’s simple idea saw local schools, choirs, musicians and dance groups taking part in a John and Ruth project that quickly smashed Merriman Ruth and John’s hoped-for target of £3,000 within just two days of Ruth’s tragic death on 9th March. The song has already raised more than £30,000. Once Ruth had announced her wish to recreate ‘Hold On Change Is Coming’ (originally recorded by Sounds Of Blackness in 1997), John, music studio owner and chair of Merton Chamber of Commerce quickly jumped into
action. He first set up a Just Giving page, and soon the song began to take shape - with much of the new recording taking place at the multiaward-winning family business, Crown Lane Studio in Morden. The new version of this beautifully uplifting song along with a moving video was released at her funeral, in March on what would have been her 39th birthday. The project has involved staff and 400 pupils from Ruth and John’s sons’ school, Hillcross Primary, with the support of local choir Inner Harmony of which Ruth was a founding member. It also features percussion performances from Ruth’s sons Asher (7) and Nathan (who turned 11 the day after Ruth died) as well as winners of the school’s recent talent contest and solo cameos from students whom Ruth had mentored. Meanwhile, without John realising, Sutton Dance Academy, of which younger son Asher is a member, had heard about the project and they secretly choreographed, rehearsed and filmed a stunning and very emotional dance to complement the song. “Only five days after their mummy had died,” says John, “Asher was dancing again and both he and Nathan were drumming their hearts out, but this time in honour of their wonderful mum and to help raise funds for a charity close to our hearts.” jigsaw4u.org.uk justgiving.com/fundraising/holdon

The Livin’ ain’t easy

ummertime - and the blight of exams and results. It’s bad enough for kids, so I don’t understand why people my age still submit themselves to the ordeal of exams: diploma in this, Masters in that, qualification in the other. Some of my friends are currently beavering away like nerds. For Pete’s sake! The whole consolation of age is that we don’t have to do exams anymore. We passed our driving tests. That should have been the last of it. My studious daughter, whose life revolves around being examined pitilessly on various abstruse topics, wakes up at roughly the same time as me each day, (or, ahem, possibly a bit earlier.) I assume her first thought is ‘Aaargh - enfold me once again, sweet oblivion!’ Mine is ‘Woo hoo - Ely’s 20% Off Day!’ So carefree. You probably still get bad dreams about exams. They are a natural symptom of stress and feeling unprepared. French O level seems to be a favourite recurring one for lots of people. Divorcing? Moving house? Worried about your job? Bring on the French O level dream. You haven’t revised anything, and now you are sitting naked at a desk, surreally outside on the school hockey pitch, attempting Question 1, all your verbs disagreeing violently with their preceding direct objects. I still get nightmares about my Russian O level, trying to translate something in Cyrillic about Svetlana at the Collective Farm. Hopeless. (WHY did I do Russian? Cold War era - I thought, come the invasion, they might not shoot me if I had a smattering of Russian.) 58 summer 19 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
Of course, official advice to the youth is this: attend lessons, pay attention, take notes, keep up-to-date with homework, revise methodically and practise exam questions. Heck - I taught A-level long enough to know the drill, and how laughably irrelevant this guidance is to a certain sort of student (boys). I remember one pupil confessing at the eleventh hour that his notes were in a bit of a mess. ‘How bad?’ I asked. He proffered a Tesco carrier bag halffull of crumpled bits of paper and an apple core. That was it. His entire ‘file’ on Hamlet. Bet he still has bad dreams about it. If you are that kid, (and aren’t we all - or what’s the matter with you? Some sort of boff or something?) and it’s too late to do anything about it this summer, here’s my advice for tackling examinations successfully in the future: Grow Up. I’m afraid there is no other way. Which possibly explains why I still refuse to do them.
