2015 – the story s
In January we featured the wide range of exciting new developments taking place in Darlington. Some of these, such as the DfE offices (Bishopsgate House) and the new traffic lights on St Cuthbert’s Way, are now up and running and making a difference to the town centre. Here we take another look to see how work is progressing on other developments.
FEETHAMS LEISURE
£25m private investment from Urban & Civic and £2m from ONE (One North East) The steel frame is now in place and work is progressing well. Display boards around the site give a taster of what will be on offer at the leisure and cinema site when it opens next Easter. For more information visit: www.darlington.gov.uk/cinema
TOWN HALL FORECOURT WORKS
Funded by Tees Valley Bus Network Initiative (TVBNI). The scheme cost is around £650,000. The area in front of the Town Hall has been redeveloped in a contemporary style. The untidy planting has been replaced with specimen trees and the forecourt landscaping will integrate with the TVBNI bus and coach scheme, including a minimalist approach to the planters. Over the summer work will take place to improve bus waiting areas adjacent to the Dolphin Centre.
BUSINESS CENTRAL NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS More than £6m funding from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Homes and Communities Association (HCA).
The first tenants have now been welcomed to Business Central. The new building will support and accommodate up to 60 new and small businesses in Darlington. The centre offers flexible office accommodation from £49 per week along with meeting and conference facilities for tenants and outside companies and organisations. Anyone interested in office space at Business Central can contact: Vanessa.wood@businesscentraldarlington.co.uk 01325 526006 www.businesscentraldarlington.co.uk for more information.
NEW MULTISTOREY CAR PARK
CENTRAL PARK
Work is progressing well on the site just behind the Dolphin Centre. Once open it will provide 650 car park spaces.
Central Park has really progressed with many new homes being built, as well as the completion of Business Central and the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre – which will open later this year.
A multi-million pound development with money from the private and public sector.

y so far... NATIONAL BIOLOGICS MANUFACTURING CENTRE
£38m funding from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills. Set to officially open later this year, the Centre will provide firms with technical support to research and develop potentially life-saving cures and vaccines, including cancer remedies. Top-flight specialists from around the country are already lined up to move in once the Centre is open for business which also promises local employment opportunities for graduates. The development will hopefully be followed by a sister £20m research centre – Factories of the Future - set to open in 2017 and has the potential to test and make technology to deliver medicines for specific diseases and patient cases.
Improvements to our Roads Darlington has successfully secured £5.8 million from the Department for Transport to upgrade all the street lights in the borough and to undertake urgent maintenance works on a key bridge in the town centre. £0.8 million will be spent on strengthening Stonebridge in the town centre. This bridge across the Skerne celebrated its 120th birthday last year and is in need of urgent maintenance works. The bridge is a key link in and out of Darlington town centre and is used by over 500 buses a day as well by pedestrians and other traffic. This work will help secure the future of this elegant bridge and ensure the continued economic vitality of the town centre.
Work at Central Park will continue over 2015 with the planned creation of the National Horizons Centre, stronger links with Teesside University Darlington campus and work on the new Central Park Junction and spine road.
The remaining funding will be used to upgrade or replace 12.500 street lights to modern, more energy efficient LED lights over the next 3 years. This will help to cut energy consumption and reduce the town’s electricity bill whilst also improving the quality of street lighting and helping to tackle climate change.
THE TOWN CENTRE ACTION PLAN The Town Centre Management Board has been working with the Council and other partners to promote the town centre, improve the visitor experience and to help local shops and businesses compete in a challenging and ever-changing retail market.
There has also been good news for the newly opened A67. The engineering works were completed with money to spare, giving us the opportunity to resurface a longer stretch of the road. The important link between Teesside and Teesdale has been restored. The roads used as the official diversion route will be repaired over the summer.
