Rural communities set for better connection

Businesses and villagers in rural communities are celebrating as they will soon have access to Superfast Broadband. Thanks to a successful Rural Community Broadband Funding application, people living in Merrybent, High Conniscliffe and Piercebridge in the West of the Borough and Bishopton and the Staintons in the East of the Borough will benefit from internet speeds of up to 24mb per second. Their current internet speed is on average 2mb, but in many areas it can dip as low as 0.5mb per second so this will be a big improvement and is good news for people who work from home or run a business. To support the application, residents pulled together to present a business case for the technology to be put in place. The new cables are due to be laid towards the end of the year and residents can then choose which provider they access it through. Eunice Keeligan who lives in Merrybent and works from home two days per week, says: “I support some key payment processes within my organisation so it’s imperative that I can rely on the internet to receive and send quickly. This has hindered me in the past and I’ve had to travel into work to process urgent payments.

“On a personal level, working on the internet has been challenging at best so I am looking forward to roaming around the various sites without screens freezing and even crashing. It’s been a quite a lengthy process to get this agreed and I would like to thank all involved for taking up the cause for those of us in the small villages and farms. It is very much appreciated.” Councillor Chris McEwan, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration says: “The internet plays an increasingly important part in making rural communities more sustainable so this is great news for those who rely on the internet to work from home, run a business or access education. “Effective broadband is key to bringing economic growth to Darlington. Benefits to residents and businesses are enormous and small & medium enteprisess in particular will be able to take advantage of new opportunities leading to regeneration and job creation.” More urban areas of Darlington like the town centre and Central Park Enterprise Zone are also set to from Superfast Broadband, which will be in place by October. The Rural Community Broadband Fund is funded by Defra, the EU and Broadband Delivery UK and provides grants to establish fibre broadband in hard to reach areas.

Introducing Darlington’s new Member of Youth Parliament In February youngsters in Darlington had the chance to vote for a young person to represent the town in the UK Youth Parliament. They chose 14 year old Danny Brown, who we had the chance to catch up with en route to one of his first meetings. Here’s how it went: Firstly, congratulations on being voted in as Darlington’s Member of Youth Parliament (MYP). How does it feel? Well, when I first found out I won I was just amazed. There were six other candidates, so a lot of competition, and there were a lot of responses, 4000 in total. I was amazed how far it went. I’m excited to make changes for young people in Darlington. How did you persuade young people to vote for you? I put up a lot of posters in places I know young people go to, emailed youth groups such as scouts, and then there was word of mouth, which was a big part of it. Why did you decide to run for this position? I always try to get my voice heard and this is an excellent opportunity. If you’ve got opinions you shouldn’t complain about things if you’re not willing to try and change them. It’s easy to moan, it’s not so easy to actually do something. Tell us a bit about what you hope to achieve I had three Manifesto points; health, activities and events and employment. For health I want to introduce a texting system to answer worries and questions that youths have about themselves. For activities and events I want to make Darlington a more youth friendly place. Because of budget cuts etc. it seems more focused on the working population and I want to make it a bit more equal, for example we’ve been talking about working in conjunction with the Festival of Thrift in September as it’s one of the major events of the year. I also want to promote the idea of small starter jobs, making Saturday or weekend jobs seem more appealing to young people. Getting down to young people’s level and helping them realise that you really do need a job, whether it’s for university fees or just supporting yourself, and having experience will help.

Didn’t you have long flowing hair last time we saw you? I made a deal with a classmate that I’d get it cut off if she could get 100 signatures. She got over 100 in five minutes. Finally, do you have a short message for the young people of Darlington? There’s always a chance to get involved, you’ve just got to look for it. Danny will be producing a video blog in conjunction with C:The Box so you can keep up with his progress.

MAY you enjoy the great outdoors Walking is one of the simplest forms of physical activity.

Walk the Nordic way

It’s a great way to get and stay healthy and happy, is easy to fit into your daily life, can be done almost anywhere, at any time – for free – and it’s great for the environment.

Nordic walking is a great way to get outdoors and get healthy – did you know it can burn up to 47% more calories than normal walking? The poles help both the upper and lower body get a good workout. If you would like to give it a try, there are FREE taster sessions every Wednesday in May – meet at 10am at the Dolphin Centre. Trained walking leaders will teach you the technique. Poles are provided. There are also Nordic walking sessions several times a week, at various locations across Darlington. Costing £2.50 per session, poles are provided. For more information and to book either session contact sdt@darlington.gov.uk or call 01325 254370. Janice Chapman has been Nordic walking for over a year and loves it so much, she trained to be a volunteer walking leader. She says: “Walking is great for your health and wellbeing. You get a great feeling from being outdoors and seeing parts of Janice Chapman Darlington you didn’t know were there.”

Walking helps to reduce blood pressure, tone muscle, strengthen bones, helps to control weight, boost energy levels and improve mood. Research shows that children who walk to school are more alert and ready to learn than those who are driven there. Darlington has over 300km of public rights of way, ten local nature reserves, seven parks, three community woodlands and lots of other open spaces. From a ten minute walk in your lunch break to a five hour hike – there’s something for everyone.

Wednesday walks Join in the free local walks on offer every Wednesday – 10am at various locations. For more information contact sdt@darlington.gov.uk or call 01325 254370. Town and Co “If I have made people more aware of what Darlington has to offer and hopefully increased pride in our town then I can stand down as Mayor knowing the job has been well done.”

Councillor Charles Johnson, outgoing Mayor of Darlington, reflects on his year in office.

The Hummersknott Ward Councillor, who has served as a councillor for more than 13 years, hosted a series of events, including the annual Mayor’s Ball, and raised over £10,000 for local charities. He said: “It has been an incredible year. I have met many people from all walks of life, made new friends and learnt so much. It was a huge honour to be involved in the 60th anniversary of Town Twinning and I was proud to represent my home town of Darlington. “My aim was to plan one public event every month, above and beyond what was usually expected, with a view to encouraging people to visit the iconic buildings and venues across the Borough. This included South Park, St. Cuthbert’s Church, Central Hall and the Civic Theatre where we hosted a sell-out performance of Darlington Operatic Society’s Strictly Musicals. “I knew it was going to be a busy year but it has exceeded all my expectations. There have been events almost every day, some days up to four. I have covered the whole of the region and beyond; from Blyth in the North to Ripon in the South and from Cumbria in the West to Redcar in the East; not forgetting our visit to Mülheim. Of course, Mayors from all these areas have visited Darlington in return, taking a good message away with them. “The theme of my year has been Civic Pride and I hope I have helped increase this by hosting events, getting people to visit local venues perhaps for the first time, and working hard to get the message across to local people that Darlington is a wonderful place to live in and we should be proud of what we have. “It has been a team effort between myself, my wife Carol and my Mayoral Officer David Allaway. Ada Burns and her team at the Town Hall have all worked hard to make my year a success and I would like to thank everyone who has helped through sponsoring and supporting events in many ways.”

Country pride Hot on the heels of a year of Civic pride, follows a year of rural pride. This is one of the aims of Councillor Gerald Lee as he takes up the helm as Mayor of Darlington this month. Ward Councillor for Heighington for 15 years, Councillor Lee is passionate about the great outdoors and is keen in his Mayoral year to spread the word around the whole borough. One way he is planning to achieve this is through the Borders Bike Ride on Sunday 15 June. The 40 mile ride will take in the outskirts of Darlington and give keen cyclists the chance to see what the outlying areas of the Borough have to offer. Past Borders rides were always popular and Councillor Lee wants to revive this in his own style. Registration for the ride will be £5 and further sponsorship would be appreciated. The entrance fee will entitle the rider to free refreshment stops and the use of a back-up vehicle if needed. Less experienced riders can take part in the Family 12 mile ride around South Park. Children under 12 can enter for free. Details are available from the Dolphin Centre or from the website: www.darlington.gov.uk/borderbikeride All money raised will go to the Mayor’s chosen charities. Councillor Lee said: “I am really excited about my year in office and alongside representing the whole of the Borough, I am keen to show a different side of Darlington - the rural areas. I want people to get outdoors and see what is on their doorstep. They can do this by taking part in the Borders Bike Ride next month or even by taking part in a litter pick or a nice country walk. As Chair of Litterfree Durham and a litter picker of many years, I am passionate about keeping our town and countryside free of litter. Our Big Spring Clean supported by Darlington and Durham councils, is a simple and effective way for all like-minded people to clean up their own communities. “I am also excited about the poppy seed project where more than 1.5 million poppy seeds will be planted across

the Borough to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War. I want to see the whole Borough ablaze in a sea of red to help remember those who have perished in all wars and who are currently serving in the armed forces.”

been incredible. It just shows that there was a real need for this kind of facility in Darlington. A first class skate park opened in Darlington last month. 4Motion Skate Park on Faverdale Industrial Estate caters for BMX, In-line Skates, Scooters and Skateboards. There are sections to support street and park styles of riding and all areas are fully supervised by trained staff.

Fostering a difference

It’s Foster Care Fortnight from Monday 12 to Sunday 25 May.The two-week campaign aims to show the different types of people who foster. Here in Darlington, all sorts of people foster but we’re always on the look-out for more people to come forward. Members of our Family Placement Service will be in the foyer of the Dolphin Centre on Monday 12 and Monday 19 May from 11am-2pm. It’s a chance for anyone interested in fostering to ask questions or register their interest.

Did you know? • You don’t have to be married or have a partner to foster • You can foster from the age of 21 • If you work, you can still be a foster carer • You get an allowance and a professional fee

Carol Dixon who lives in Darlington knows firsthand the difference that fostering can make to a young person’s life. She has been a foster carer, alongside her husband, Andy, for four years.

things I’d never got the chance to do with my own boys.

She says: “I’ve always worked with children at playgroup and youth clubs and when my children started to leave home it seemed like the next step.

“It’s not just me and my husband that find it rewarding, I still have one son at home and it’s great for him to be a big brother. He can level with the kids and understand what they’re going through and help them out.”

“My first placement was two sisters. Having always had sons, I was a bit nervous about looking after girls but I absolutely loved it. It was a chance to do all the girly

“I really enjoy looking after teenagers - you can make such a difference to their lives, whether it’s helping them to decide on a college course or giving them a bit of encouragement. This year I got a lovely Mother’s Day message from a teenager I’m looking after and it meant so much.
