Track across Time 16 October 2013 to 30 March 2014 Track across Time is an exhibition taking place at the Head of Steam Museum from Wednesday 16 October to Sunday 30 March 2014. The exhibition will present paintings, sculpture, film and photography and bridge two events which proved momentous to the people of Darlington —the opening of North Road Locomotive Works in 1863 and the outbreak of World War I in 1914.

The exhibition has been created by three local artists working under the banner of Cluster Arts - Carolyn Corfield, Graeme Rowatt and Vera Hynes. Displayed amongst the permanent exhibits within the museum, the original pieces aim to deliver an evocative journey through the artist’s imagination and have been inspired by Darlington’s railway heritage.

The exhibition is included in admission to the Head of Steam museum. To find out more about the museum, including opening times and prices visit www.head-of-steam.co.uk or scan the QR code.

Start of the Line 26 October to 27 November 2013 Start of the Line is an exhibition taking place at Crown Street Art Gallery from Saturday 26 October to Wednesday 27 November. The exhibition is by Julie MacBean, who is the artist in residence at Teesside University’s Darlington Campus. The work in the exhibition is predominately drawing based, using graphite, charcoal and ink. Julie drew her inspiration from Darlington’s rich industrial and railway heritage. Get your Flu jab

The NHS is urging people who are at high risk from seasonal flu to protect themselves with a free vaccination which saves lives. You are advised to get the jab this winter if you:

• Are pregnant • Are aged over 65 • Have a long term health condition such as diabetes, asthma, or a heart condition (this includes children with serious health problems) • Have a weakened immune system • Care for people in these 'at risk' groups Over the next few years flu vaccination will also start to be offered annually to all children aged 2-16 years. For this coming winter some pre-school children will be invited for vaccination by their GPs. The flu vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu, so even if you had a jab last winter you need another one this year to stay flu safe. If you consider yourself to be part of an 'at risk' group get in touch with your local GP in October and get yourself the seasonal jab for free.

Catch it, Bin it... Kill it! The flu virus is spread by small droplets of fluid coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person, or if an infected person transfers it on their fingers. You can stop the spread of flu by:

• Washing your hands regularly with soap and water • Using tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze • Putting used tissues in a bin as soon as possible.

For more information about Flu and how to prevent it spreading please visit www.nhs.uk/flu

New development sites: your responses

About 400 responses were received for the recent Making and Growing Places consultation, in addition to comments made at 15 public consultation events over the summer and feedback received through Twitter and Facebook. We are now carefully considering them.

What is Making and Growing Places? It’s a document which proposes where new houses, shops, employment, schools, roads and open spaces should go in Darlington and which land should be protected from development.

What have people said? Here are some of the main issues that were raised. • Proposed new housing sites attracted the most interest • Some people want open spaces and greenfield land in areas like Hammond Drive, Glebe Road, Burtree Lane, Hartington Way/Bellburn Lane and Sugar Hill to be saved from development, and have concerns about the form of any new development. • Some people asked why so much new housing was needed. • Several housebuilders and landowners want more land to be identified for development. They have suggested alternative, mostly greenfield sites, and argue that not enough new housing is being planned and that some of the brownfield sites identified will not come forward.

• People would like more to be done to improve the vitality of the town centre. • There has also been support for the reuse of brownfield land.

A Special Place Scrutiny Committee will be held on Thursday 31 October at the Town Hall (Committee Room one) to consider the consultation responses and the next steps that are needed to finalise the Local Plan document. You can find out more about the consultation at www.darlington.gov.uk/mgp, or by scanning the QR code.

Good Friends A pioneering scheme encouraging people to be good neighbours launched in Darlington on 1 October. Good Friends is a volunteering project in Darlington with a difference.

People from all walks of life are welcome to get involved, and the focus is on the little ways you can help make life easier for an older or vulnerable person in your area.

If you want to volunteer but don't have a lot of free time, or you want to get involved in another project alongside your usual volunteering, Good Friends is for you.

"The Good Friend Scheme is about doing that little bit extra for vulnerable neighbours, whether it is taking their bins out for them or simply checking up on them to see how they're doing.” Gillian Peel, Chief Executive Officer of Age UK Darlington

The project works by partnering you with someone in your area who needs a little extra help once in a while. This could include: • Helping your neighbour with their wheelie bin. • Assisting with using their computer to shop online. • Tidying up their garden when needed. • Even just checking up on them now and then. As Good Friends is run in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch, you will also be registered as a member and receive updates on what's going on in your area.

Car parks in Darlington - it’s business as usual!

There is a lot happening in Darlington town centre at the moment, but it will be open for business as usual - whether you are working, shopping or relaxing! With the development of the new leisure complex and the relocation of the Department for Education offices, there will be some changes to the town centre. The car park to the rear of the Town Hall closed last month, so that work could start on the relocation of the Department for Education offices. This has resulted in the loss of 162 spaces, which is 4% of spaces in the town centre. Even though that car park is out of action, there is still lots of car parking in Feethams and the rest of the town centre for people to park in. For example, there are over 270 spaces at the Beaumont Street East and North car parks as well as over 180 spaces over the ring road at Park Place East and West. We will also be closing Archer Street, Kendrew Street East and West Commercial Street East in October for re-surfacing. Disruption will be kept to a minimum and improved signage and car parking information will be made

DID YOU KNOW?

That there are 25 car parks and over 4,000 car parking spaces in the town centre? This includes Council-run and Private car parks

IT’S BETTER BY BUS! By choosing to walk, cycle or use public transport you could be getting fit, saving money and helping to improve your local environment. So why not leave your car at home and choose sustainable transport? Find out more by visiting www.dothelocalmotion.co.uk or calling 0800 4589810 available in the run-up to Christmas, when demand for car parking will be greatest. We will need to close the rest of the Town Hall car park in Spring/Summer 2014. We are currently working on measures to ensure that there is still plenty of parking for everyone once this car park is closed, including spaces for motorcycles and disabled parking bays. Once finished, the developments will lead to high quality car parks and bring over 800 jobs to the town centre. We’ll keep you up to date with everything that is happening.
