Right up your street

Did you know that Darlington has one of the most diverse town centres in the country and is ranked in the top 3% of UK shopping venues?

Stefano says: “Darlington is a fantastic town as it’s got a town centre steeped in history and there’s a lot to draw people in.

A recent survey showed that while the town is lucky enough to host 24 of the 27 high street chains like Next and House of Fraser, 80% of the town’s shops remain independent and it’s this mix that makes Darlington so unique.

“I was keen to open a second business here as I felt there was a gap in the market. The covered market has proved a good place to set-up as it’s within close proximity to Foffano’s restaurant so compliments it very well and the support from other traders has been brilliant, they’re almost like a big family.”

Not to mention the 88 listed buildings, a significant number of which are on High Row including Barclay’s, Natwest and Yorkshire Bank. And the town centre just keeps getting better with retailers choosing to open second premises in Darlington rather than locate outside the town. Husband and wife team, Stefano and Emma Foffano who have run Foffano’s Italian restaurant on the market square for seven years were keen to expand their business. Rather than look outside the Borough they chose a spot above the historic Victorian market and recently opened Little Foffano’s Deli.

If you’re shopping in the town centre why not take advantage of The Little Book of Offers which has lots of discounts on town centre retailers from haircuts to dry cleaning and eating out. Download it from www.distinctdarlington.co.uk or pick one up from the Dolphin Centre, the Crown Street library or the customer service centre at the Town Hall.

The way you register to vote has changed

The Government has changed the voting registration system. Up until now, the head of a household has been responsible for registering everyone who lives there. Now people need to register individually. You will have received a letter from us in August, letting you know whether you’ve been moved onto the new Electoral Register automatically, or whether you need to register on the new system. If you need to register, it only takes five minutes and you’ll need your National Insurance Number (if you have one). Go to: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

We’re introducing Revised Weekly Collections to save £400,000 a year – money which can be used to help us continue to provide essential services in our community. The new system will also help boost Darlington’s already excellent recycling rates and help reduce carbon emissions.

What can I recycle? From October, you will be able to recycle:

• Aerosol cans • Aluminium foil • Food and drink cans • Plastic bottles • Juice cartons/ Tetrapaks

• Plastic food trays • Margarine, butter and yoghurt pots • Glass bottles and jars • Paper, card and cardboard

In order to recycle successfully, it’s important to make sure that your recycling is put in the right bin, box or bag. If you don’t, and your containers are contaminated, we may not be able to collect your recycling. Visit www.darlington.gov.uk/rwc or call 01325 388799 for more information about what you can recycle and where.

Thrift welcomes creative ideas... Grace Wakes (@wakesy) is head of social media for Darlington for Culture and a frequent blogger. She is one of the many Darlington residents looking forward to this year’s festival:

Festival of Thrift needs you! Fancy volunteering at the biggest sustainability festival in the UK? Festival of Thrift is looking for volunteers. Whether you want to meet and greet visitors, help at workshops or give us a hand to make the Festival look pretty, there’s a role for you! Visit www.festivalofthrift.co.uk/yourfestival-needs-you to register your interest.

“Last year’s Festival of Thrift demonstrated on a national level what a creative, innovative and community focused town Darlington is. For me, it showed that you don’t have to ‘make do with what you have’, you can improve it, make it better or even turn it into something completely different. This year, I am looking forward to getting creative, I am especially looking forward to Navigation North’s ‘Trash & Treasure: Art Bazaar’ where one person’s trash could be an artistic masterpiece to you. Also being a lover of the 1960s, I am looking forward to delving into the vintage goodies stalls. In the meantime, If you want to get thrifty in Darlington, I can recommend visiting the Scrap Studio team who can even make musical instruments from recycled materials.”

Making it easier to get to the Festival Arriva will be running extra buses to the Festival of Thrift over the weekend. The number 11 bus will be running up to every ten minutes on Saturday and up to every 15 minutes on Sunday. Lingfield Point has lots of bike racks around the site for those who want to use two wheels to get to the festival! There is lots of free car parking on site if you’re coming by car.

Whether you’re taking part in one of the workshops, looking to do some shopping, or are just coming along to soak up the entertainment – we can’t wait to see you there!

Spotlight on...

Part One Darlington’s Secret Superheroes Over the next few months we’ll be looking at a selection of foster carers from varied backgrounds and with varied experiences. New foster carers Debbie and Tony Castle have been fostering since March 2014 and foster children up to five years old, including siblings. They already have three grown up children and a six year old of their own. They decided to take up fostering with Debbie having previously been a child minder, so their young son was used to having other children in the house, he is “a really caring little boy, and takes it all in his stride, he loves it”. To people considering fostering they said “just go for it, we kept thinking ‘is the time right?’ but if you think about it too much you might never do it. So far we’ve found it tiring, but brilliant”. They have joined the Darlington Foster Carer’s Association, which is a support network for foster carers and their own children, as well as for foster children, which Debbie says “really helps you feel like you’re not doing this alone, that you have support”. Debbie says “I wanted to make a difference to the lives of children in Darlington, and fostering is a great way to do it”. To find out more visit: www.darlington.gov.uk/fostering or contact the Family Placement Service on 01325 388077 fostering@darlington.gov.uk

No matter who you are, or what you do, fostering could be for you. There are many different ways that you can foster children, and the amount of time and commitment can vary greatly. For example if you choose to foster very young children you can expect your experience to be very hands on, but if you do respite for teenagers then your role could be a lot less intense. Our assessment process will make sure that your foster role suits you and your family while at the same time provides support for our children and young people. Foster caring is greatly rewarding; not only do you get to see improvement in the lives of Darlington’s children, there is also an annual event celebrating the work done by foster carers in the town. The event comprises of a meal, talks and awards for foster carers who have fostered for long periods of time. It’s a small way to show how much the work done by foster carers is appreciated. Could you be among them next year?

Don’t take the plunge with loan sharks Anyone can end up in a mess with money, but turning to high interest and logbook loans could leave you struggling to keep your head above water.

When bills are piling up, borrowing money from a loan shark or getting a log book loan can seem like a good idea. But these loans are high interest, which means you can end up paying back three or four times more than you borrowed.

And with a logbook loan, if payments are not kept up, your car could be taken away from you. Both of these types of loans are risky and should be avoided. Safer loan alternatives do exist and Darlington has an excellent example of this. Darlington Credit Union offers affordable loans even if you have no previous credit history. Signing up for membership is easy and can be done by popping into their Town Centre office or to the Town Hall Customer Contact Centre. You can even sign up online. The Credit Union has become so popular it has seen its membership in Darlington rise to over 4,000 people, who find it to be a safe way to save and borrow.

For more information, and to check if you are eligible for a loan, visit www.darlingtoncreditunion.co.uk
