FROM THE
Head of School
Participation in athletics has been an integral part of the Darlington experience since the founding of the school. The first mention of athletics in the school catalogue came in 1914-15 with this statement: “The Darlington School has been so successful in athletics that the question is sometimes raised as to whether or not too much attention is given to this phase of school activity. The management of the school has always been careful that this should not be the case.” (Hanks, The Story of Darlington School, p. 14) It is likely that the cause of this statement was a four-game football season which saw the Tigers outscore their opponents 113-0 (Hanks, The Story of Darlington School, p. 14). Then and now, athletics serve as one of the most watched, beloved and scrutinized aspects of any school program. Wins and losses, however, are only a smart part of the story when we think about the full impact of athletics on a student. Darlington has remained successful, by the measure of wins and losses, throughout the
2
history of the school in both individual and team sports. As you will see in this magazine, our success stems from a “championship culture,” which expects our student-athletes to prepare and compete while doing so in the right way with a high level of class and sportsmanship. They are coached by men and women who want the very best for them, both on the field and in life. Winning is an outcome of doing things the right way, much the same way that making a good grade on an exam comes from study and preparation, while losses are important lessons to build upon. During the 2018-19 school year, I had the great privilege of coaching the middle school boys’ basketball team. We finished the season 19-0 and won the championship. It was an awesome experience, yet when I reflect on the season, it’s not the wins that hold the fondest memories. It’s a player choosing to guard a much taller player at the end of the game and coming up with a key defensive stop. It’s players talking and joking on bus rides to Cedartown or Coosa. It’s older players encouraging younger players to work harder in practice. It’s a player thanking the referee at the end of a game, or that same referee thanking me for the effort and sportsmanship of our team. Athletics matter in the life of a young person, and athletics matter at Darlington School. Perhaps this issue of Darlington Magazine will inspire you to reflect on your own athletic experiences; regardless, I hope you enjoy the stories of how athletics come to life at Darlington.
Annual lectureship features former U.S. Congressman Retired U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions was the 16th speaker in the annual Class of 1953 Lectureship Series in April. He represented the people of north Texas for 22 years and now runs a Dallas-based consulting and public affairs company, Sessions LLC. “The Darlington experience is about finding yourself and knowing you can get to anywhere you want from here,” he said in his address to students, faculty and alumni. “This is a place of not just love, and not just the satisfaction of having someone that cares about you, but actually, I think, it ultimately gives you something you can take and do something with. And that is the essence of education.” Sessions grew up in Waco, Texas, and went on to graduate from Southwestern University, where he has served on the Board of Trustees since 2006. He worked for then-Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 16 years, retiring as the district marketing manager in Dallas. Sessions was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1997 and served 11 consecutive terms. From 20132019, he was chairman of the House Rules Committee, which is responsible for establishing the terms and conditions of debate on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. In 2008 and 2010, he was elected by the House Republican Conference as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. During his time in Congress, Sessions was responsible for the appointments of over 150 cadets to our country’s military academies including the United States Academy at West Point, Navy Academy, Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy and Coast Guard Academy. The Class of 1953 Lectureship Series was established in 2003 to commemorate the class’s 50th reunion.

Darlington named Apple Distinguished School Apple has named Darlington an Apple Distinguished School for 20182021, recognizing the school for its commitment to teaching students technology skills to solve real-world problems as an integrated part of its curriculum. “We are thrilled to receive this honor again and to share this accomplishment with our teachers and students,” said Beth Wardlaw, technology integration coordinator. “The process of becoming an Apple Distinguished School has become much more rigorous as Apple looks beyond just the software and hardware, but how our school is using technology in an innovative and creative way. For our renewal, we were able to share what our students and teachers are doing on a daily basis.” Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use

Debbie (Brice) Greeson (’72T) Road to Retirement
For Debbie (Brice) Greeson (’72T), one of her favorite things about working at Darlington has been the opportunity to celebrate with her Thornwood sisters at Alumni Weekend each year.
6
“I love Alumni Weekend,” she said. “I love seeing my fellow Thornwood alumnae. We have a special bond. I think in my role at Darlington I was able to be a liaison between the Thornwood ladies and Darlington. They knew Thornwood was represented.” Greeson attended Thornwood School for Girls in grades 6-12 and was a proud member of the Blue Team. Her fond memories of her alma mater include May Day and the lifelong relationships she built with classmates and teachers. “I will never forget the Great Class of ’72,” she said. “We have stayed close and still gather for reunions every year.” After high school, Greeson went on to graduate from Vanderbilt University and spent several years working as a respiratory therapist at Northside Hospital in Atlanta before she and her husband, Dan, started their family. When Owen (’11) was born, they made the decision to move to Rome to be closer to relatives and so that their son could eventually attend Darlington. “I loved the medical field,” she said. “I was young and I liked the excitement of it, and I liked taking care of babies. But once I had a baby, I was a ready for a total change.” Owen enrolled at Darlington in pre-K and several years later, in the summer of 2006, Greeson was hired to be part of the school’s advancement team. “Growing up here and going to Thornwood, I have always been involved with Darlington,” she said. “It has always been part of my life, and I knew it would be a place where I would know people and be around people with similar interests.” As advancement services coordinator, Greeson was responsible for recording and reporting on all charitable contributions to the school. “All gifts came to me and I entered them, reported on them, analyzed them and made sure everyone’s donations were properly acknowledged,” she explained. “I was also the Raiser’s Edge database manager and had the opportunity to work with each person on the advancement team and support them. I’ve been very fortunate to work with fun, dedicated people who
believe in Darlington and try to make it its best.” Greeson is particularly proud to be part of the team that helped raise over $97 million through the Second Century Campaign. “It was fulfilling to be part of alumni relations and fundraising,” she said. “These are very important parts of the school that people don’t always think about. I also loved the hustle and bustle of working in a school environment. I liked the activity and that you’re not stuck in a quiet office or cubicle all day. I’ve gotten to watch my coworkers’ kids grow up, which has been so much fun.” Greeson’s own son, Owen, graduated from Darlington in 2011 and went on to earn an industrial engineering degree from Georgia Tech. He now lives in California and works in logistics for Anheuser-Busch. “Darlington gave Owen so many experiences in academics, athletics and the arts,” she said. “He was involved in so many different activities and I don’t think he ever really had a free period. It’s more of a college atmosphere, which provides a lot of freedom while encouraging responsibility at the same time. This taught him time management at an early age and gave him the confidence to take on new challenges.” As she begins her retirement, Greeson misses Darlington but she is also ready for this next phase of life. Her goal is to stay open to new things and opportunities and to always keep moving. “I definitely miss the people, the funny stories, the students,” she said, “but the thing I miss most is my beautiful office view.” Located on the second floor of Sydenham Hall, Greeson’s office had a picture-perfect view of Silver Lake. “I believe I had the best office view in Rome, Ga., and I miss seeing that every day,” she said, “but I will be back for gatherings, events and certainly for Alumni Weekend.”

County Commissioner Wright Bagby (’63, LD ’12) named Distinguished Alumnus When Board Chairman Bob Hortman (’72) introduced Wright Bagby (’63, LD ’12) as the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus during Alumni Weekend last fall, he described the reason for his selection using 10 short words that couldn’t ring more true: “Wright is not about Wright. Wright is about everyone else.” “He has volunteered and given of himself countless hours, day after day, year after year, for others – making this school, and his church, and this community a better place,” added Hortman. To say Bagby was honored is an understatement. “This was very special to me,” he said. “Darlington is and always has been a tremendous part of my life, so being put into this elite group was a great and meaningful honor that I hope was deserved.” Bagby is a lifelong resident of Floyd County and retired business owner who was elected to the Floyd County Commission in 2016. He served two previous terms on the Rome City Commission and is the former Mayor of Rome. “My parents, as is the case with all Darlington parents, made big sacrifices for me to go to Darlington,” he said. “It was important to them for me to be successful, and it was important to me and Pat for our children and grandchildren to have the same experience, and to participate fully in that experience. My Darlington experience was a big part of who I am and prepared me to meet any challenge I faced.” As a Darlington student, Bagby was class treasurer; president of the D Club; vice president of the Jabberwokk; served on the staff of The Darlingtonian; and was a member of the Honor Council, Glee Club, and Dance Committee. He also played football, soccer and baseball. Summer 2019
Head of School Brent Bell, Alumni Council member Chris Jackson (’02, LD ’13) and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Bob Hortman (’72) present Wright Bagby (’63, LD ’12) with the Distinguished Alumnus Award during Alumni Weekend.
He went on to graduate from Auburn University. “My advice to Darlington students would be to take advantage of every opportunity that the school has to offer,” he said. “You only have this opportunity once, so get involved and make a difference. No other school that I know of offers the opportunities that are in front of you at Darlington. Involvement will make you a better person and your school a better place.” Bagby has contributed much to his community. As a County Commissioner, Bagby is chairman of the Floyd County Admin Finance Committee and serves on the Floyd County Public Safety Committee, Rome-Floyd Joint Development Oversight Committee, Rome-Floyd Joint Services Committee, Floyd County Board of Health, Floyd County Work Release Committee, Floyd County Judicial Services Committee, and Floyd Healthcare Management Board. He is also past president of the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Georgia, a life deacon of First Baptist Church of Rome, a past chair of the Rome-Floyd Planning Commission and Rome-Floyd Parks & Recreation Authority, founding president of Rome-Seven Hills Rotary Club, former board member of South Rome Redevelopment, and a founding member of the Community Foundation for Greater Rome. “If you go to Darlington, you serve and that becomes part of your DNA,” said Bagby. “Honor is also of huge
importance. I was fortunate to have served on the Honor Council for five years and the things I learned from that experience shaped my character and actions for the rest of my life. Very few schools put as high a value on honor as does Darlington.” For his service, Bagby was recognized as a recipient of the Heart of the Community Foundation’s Heart of the Community Award of Honor as well as the Boy Scouts of Northwest Georgia’s Distinguished Citizen Award. At Darlington, he is a former class agent, a graduate of Leadership Darlington, and a longtime volunteer and past board member for The Darlington Fund. He is also a member of the J. Daniel Hanks (’27) Heritage Society. “You will be greatly prepared for life if you take advantage of what is offered here [at Darlington],” Bagby said to the student body after receiving his award. “This is a special place and I will forever be grateful to my parents for the sacrifices they made to give me the opportunity to be a student here ... In life, some get recognized and some don’t, but when you work as a team, you can accomplish great things.” He and his wife, Pat, are the parents of Beth (Bagby) Smith (’87, LD ’12) and Tripp Bagby (’91). They have five grandchildren, Bailey Smith (’15), Avery Smith (’17), Anne Scott Smith (’20), Will Bagby (’22) and Chandler Bagby (’25).

Head Coach Kelly McDurmon recognizes Rhett McDurmon (’19), Dalton Blankenship (’19) and Colton Woods (’19) with Most Valuable Player Awards during the 2018 Winter Sports Assembly.
Tigers on Top
Wrestlers end stellar season with accolades It was a varsity wrestling season that was poised for greatness. With five seniors out of 12 total wrestlers, the leadership depth in the Tigers’ team roster was strong. Three of the five seniors were defending state champions, and expectations were high. The coaching staff, which consists of Kelly McDurmon and assistants Chris Butler and Craig Kipp, all knew that this year’s team was special. Dalton Blankenship (’19) and Colton Woods (’19) were three-time state champs, and Rhett McDurmon (’19) had won the state title as a junior and finished second as a freshman and sophomore. The senior leadership was rounded out by two other state finalists: Garrett Sheffield (’19), who finished fifth in the state in 2018, and Darlington transfer Tyler Ingram (’19). “Our athletes always have high expectations for themselves. It’s the Darlington Wrestling Way,” said Coach
8
McDurmon. “I would venture to say that they work harder physically than any other sport on campus, and they have worked hard to not let the physical work mentally get the best of them.” This high level of training translates into a very physical team, but unfortunately also resulted in early season injuries for several key athletes. “All of our players had to deal with a variety of struggles,” said Coach McDurmon. “About midway through (the season), we sat and talked about the fact that when this is all over we’ll look back and see everything we’ve overcome to do our very best.” And overcome they did. The team notched out a very successful season, winning five team tournaments, sending seven to the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships, and coming home with five state titles. Alex Cordero (’22) kicked off the state championship winning spree, followed by individual state titles from Blankenship, Woods, McDurmon and Ingram. By earning their fourth state titles, Woods and Blankenship completed a feat only a few dozen Georgia high school wrestlers have accomplished over the last six decades.
The only other Darlington wrestler on that elite list is Spencer Jones (’12). This was a season that could have ended much differently if the team had allowed physical and mental challenges to be a barrier to success. Blankenship sustained a high ankle sprain in the first tournament of the year and missed the first several weeks of training. He ended the season a fourtime state champion. “Winning my fourth title feels like a whole lot of work that’s paid off,” said Blankenship. “We have been coached to work hard, be persistent and never give up. I remember winning the state title as a freshman and running and jumping into my coach’s arms from about 10 feet away. Winning always feels better after you’ve worked really hard to reach your goals.” Classmate Woods agrees, adding that mental preparation has been key to the team’s success as well as his own. This season, the fellow four-time state champion overcame a knee injury and the uncertainty of whether or not he’d be medically cleared to attend the Air Force Academy. “For a wrestler, if you don’t spend time believing in winning, in being successful, it won’t happen,” said Woods.

“I spent a lot of time thinking about this, visualizing being a champion. I even wrote down (several times) that I would be a state champ. I’ve been working for this goal ever since I was in middle school, so I’ve been focused on this for a while.” When asked how many times he has been pinned in his high school career, Woods gave a surprising answer. Zero. And just how is this feat even possible? Woods brings the conversation back around to mental preparation. “Throughout my high school career, I have learned to stay in great position to avoid the risk of being put to my back,” he said. “It has never really been a large challenge to not get pinned because I was never thinking about it; I just wrestled and focused on winning.” Coach McDurmon plays double duty for a couple of his athletes; he is also the father of Rhett and Carl (’21). “Rhett damaged his knee during football season and then also had a high ankle sprain, so we were watching him closely as we got deeper into the season,” said Kelly. “He was also working through the mental aspect of having finished in second place during his first two seasons and winning his first state title as a junior when his very close classmates were coming into their senior season as three-time state champs.” Rhett confesses that early in his career it was challenging. “I feel like it was difficult, at first, to be both excited for them and their accomplishments and disappointed in my own performance because we go through the same practices and work just as hard every day,” he said. “After my sophomore season, I just had to change my mindset and decide to go win my own way. Looking back after two titles, I'm glad to be able to say that I overcame something like that to end up on top.” Ingram made the move to Darlington in search of more opportunities, academic and otherwise. He experienced just that and topped off an already successful wrestling career
Summer 2019
with an overtime victory in the state tournament. “I made the transition from my old school to a new school with such success by coming into a great wrestling program with teammates who were already good and having a great coaching staff that fixed my technique into being a better wrestler,” said Ingram. “It was the best feeling in my life, beating a defending state champ twice, a state finalist, and then a state champ in the finals in triple overtime with 10 seconds left.” This strong group of wrestlers will leave a legacy of success as they prepare for what lies next. Blankenship and Woods left Darlington as four-time state champions, having won an individual title each year of their high school careers. Both also went undefeated in their senior seasons, with Blankenship going 20-0 and Woods going 43-0. McDurmon is a two-time state champion who went 35-4 his final year with the Tigers. Ingram capped off his high school career winning the GHSA Class A 145-pound state championship and going 47-4 as a senior. “Three of our seniors cut their teeth together and have grown up
experiencing success as a group. Adding Tyler Ingram in to the group this year made this a solid group of seniors,” said Coach McDurmon. “These guys are now going to four different elite schools, and I know they’re ready to wrestle at the college level.” Blankenship signed with Davidson College, while Woods committed to the U.S. Air Force Academy. McDurmon signed with Washington and Lee University, and Ingram signed with Reinhardt University. A dear friend asked Coach McDurmon if he’d rather be in Commerce High School’s position, with two individual state champions and a team state title, or in Darlington’s position of being second place as a team and having five individual state champions. He responded in typical Coach McDurmon fashion, by supporting his team. “I answered by saying that I love first place of course,” he said. “But I can’t begin to imagine which three of our finalists I would have not stand on the podium in order to have that team title. I’d rather have the five champions any day of the week, and I’m beyond proud of these guys. If we’re debriefing on this year’s wrestling season, I’d say that having five champions at one time is a feather in my cap.”
Colton Woods (’19) and Dalton Blankenship (’19) are two of less than 40 wrestlers in Georgia to earn four consecutive state titles in the last six decades.

So you could be playing the best golf of your life one week and the next it could be the total opposite. My involvement in sports has taught me perseverance, patience and discipline. Time management is also critical. You have to be able to manage school and practice. “Sports helped me challenge myself. Before I did cross country, I’d never run more than 800 meters, and there’s a big gap between 800 meters and a 5k. After the first practice, I thought, ‘I can’t do this.’ But I went the second day and I’m glad I did. I started swimming as a freshman and I was a beginner
who knew only breast stroke. I swam really slow and did not know how to dive from the board or do flip turns. It was a very hard experience but I’m so glad that I continued. I overcame all these difficulties and I’m really proud of myself.” - Zenith Han (’19), Two-Sport Athlete

I broke it at our last meet, and to break it again at state was great. Coach Tolbert was instrumental
“The most important lesson I’ve learned is to never let your emotions control you. No matter what happens or the consequence (which sometimes you have no control over), you must stay strong and positive. I’ve also learned self-control, dedication and perseverance. Sports has impacted my whole experience at Darlington. It has led me to new friends, long-lasting relationships with teammates and coaches, and memories I’ll never forget. My advice to other student-athletes is to never give up and to keep working your hardest. The key is to find your struggles and make them your strengths, no matter how much work it takes.” - Liza Frisbee (’20), Two-Time State Golf Champion

Going into the finals, I was nervous and just hoped that I could run to my full potential. I prayed that God would give me the strength and ability to run my fastest race and come out a state champion. At the finish line, I realized that I was going to win, and I got the biggest smile on my face. I had so much adrenaline running through me and I couldn’t stop smiling. “On the field, my coaches have taught me to play with personality and express my positivity, passion and toughness. When I step off the field, they continue to help mold me into the person I want to become – whether it be through their humor, holding me accountable, or being there to help me push through the tough personal times. I plan on attending Colorado Christian University to play DII soccer and further my education in health sciences as well as Spanish. Darlington has helped me realize what I’m capable of and how much further I can push myself in college, both in the classroom and on the field.” - Kinley Sanders (’19), Soccer Academy Standout
“Mentality is the most important part – not just in wrestling but in any sport. If you don’t believe you’re going to succeed, or if you don’t think about getting your hand raised, it’s not going to happen. I spent a lot of time thinking about it and visualizing it. Academically, first semester of my freshman year was pretty rough, but I quickly learned how to manage my time better with wrestling and school work. Eddie Guth has served as athletic director since 2015. He holds a B.A. in Communications from Rhodes College and has over three decades of experience in independent school education and athletics. He began his career at Darlington, teaching and coaching here from 1984 to 1994 before taking on leadership roles at a number of schools in the Southeast. He is married to Virginia (Johnson) Guth (’79), first-grade teaching assistant.
Q&A with Brent Bell
Eddie Guth
What inspired you to pursue a career in education My mom. She was a teacher and she always thought I would really enjoy it. She was right; I have loved every day.
What do you love about working in independent schools? I always thought I would teach and coach in public schools, but I’ve loved being in independent schools for my entire career so far. We all want to be at school, we make sacrifices and commitments to be at school, we make a clear decision that we want to be a part of that community. It feels like we are all in this together.
How does it feel to be back at Darlington? Some days, I walk across campus and I’m just so happy; it feels like this is where I’m supposed to be. I’ve always loved the community here. As I tell people often, you don’t work at Darlington, you live it. I’ve always loved that, and it was something I searched for at all of my other schools. I don’t know if every boarding school has that or not, but I know we do.
What role do Darlington’s mission and values play in your decision to work here? One thing Darlington does very well is educating a well-rounded student. We work together to show the importance of academics, arts, service, and athletics. We’re constantly preaching to our teams to do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do – to give effort, support each other, and that you cannot just be a winner on the field. Be one in the classroom, in the auditorium, in the community. I feel that is one of the reasons Darlington has the strong community that it has.
What do you value most about the teaching and learning environment Darlington provides? Darlington provides paths and opportunities. We provide great examples and choices, but the student has to decide which path is right
14
for them. They have every opportunity to be as successful as they want to be. The opportunities are there, but they have to be chosen, grasped, and embraced.
What is the most meaningful part of your work? I just want to help. Of course, anytime I can be with the students I am the happiest, but if I can help someone get recruited, design a workout, or help a coach through a tough patch, I am happy. I do love coaching and am thankful I have that opportunity.
What are some of the things you are most proud of accomplishing in your career? • • • • • • • •
I’ve never late or missed a workout. I’ve missed only one game. I’ve never had an unsportsmanlike penalty called on me. I’ve had only one unintentional delay of game call (it was after a quarter change and I still question the call). I started an athletic department and completed an upper school renovation from scratch. I’ve helped place all of my college-hopeful athletes in college. I’ve coached and helped the last three girls who have broken the Darlington School record in girls’ discus. I’ve loved every team.
What do you see as Darlington's greatest strengths/challenges related to your work? Strengths: Tradition, great student-athletes, caring coaches and community, great facilities Challenges: Off-field training, ensuring we always uphold the Darlington expectation, personnel, ever-changing GHSA (Georgia High School Association)
What are your biggest hopes for the future of Darlington? For everyone to understand how special this community and history are, embrace it, and be
grateful to be a part. To know we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves. To never lower expectations or accept anything but our best efforts. This means not always winning, but always giving best effort and attitude.
Who are the people in your life who have inspired you most? How so? Cotton Lloyd and Jack Be Shears were my youth football coaches in fifth, sixth and eighth grade. These men mean the world to me, and at one time they both made me tremble. They were driven, smart and caring. They taught us to work hard, be proud of what we did, care for each other, and that with discipline and mental toughness we could beat anything together. I don’t think we ever lost a football game; I know my eighth grade year we never gave up a point. Jack Be Shears was my offensive line coach. Being on the offensive line is not very glorious; you never touch the ball, catch a pass, or get much glory at all. But he made it special. He taught us to be soldiers, be the first to attack, protect our teammates, and that together we could take on anyone. He taught us to never hesitate, never whine and show no weakness. He stressed foundation, solid base, to always maintain leverage, and to fight. There was not a pregame in high school or college that I did not think about him preaching those points. I still use them. Cotton Lloyd was a Memphis policeman. He coached in his uniform, gun on his side, and we called him Cotton. I was terrified of him early on – he pushed us very hard. Many of the practices we went through daily would probably be considered brutal in today’s world. But he took a group of young men and taught us pride, hard work and discipline. He expanded my vocabulary, and I quickly learned not to share my new words around my sisters. We played on Saturdays; we’d meet before the game to get dressed and then, as a team, walk in silence to the church, where Cotton led us in a rosary and before we boarded the bus for the game. We were silent on the bus and would enter the stadium in silence in a perfect straight line. We’d warm up like a military exercise and prepare to

Campus Feature beat our opponent. Our practices were grueling; the closest thing to a water break was when you finally couldn’t stand it anymore and you sucked the sweat from your jersey. We probably wouldn’t want to do some of this again, but we are awfully proud we did it. In sixth grade, my family had a house fire that caused us to be displaced for a brief period. Who did I stay with? Cotton. In 2007, my mother passed away unexpectedly. I’ll never forget how appreciative I was to see Cotton at her memorial service; it tore at my heart. Next are my parents, Joyce and Howard Guth. I don’t know how they got together and sometimes I thought it odd that two people that were so different ended up married. My mother was from Mobile, Ala., and my dad from Adell, Wisc. He was a perfectionist. Everything had a place. He had impeccable hand writing and was organized and precise. When he trimmed the hedges, he’d run a string and put a level on it; it had to be exact. You didn’t cut the yard once; it must be bagged and cross cut two times a week. My dad was strong and tough. He played baseball for the University of Wisconsin and was a marine. He was awarded two purple hearts for his service at Iwo Jima and in the Pacific in World War II. One day when we were working in the garage, he was trying to cut a garden hose with a pair of scissors. We should’ve gone inside and gotten a knife, but we didn’t. His hand slipped and I saw the scissors go all the way through one finger and halfway in another. He said nothing. He just pulled it out, wrapped a dirty handkerchief around it, and finished the project. Anytime I see “Gran Torino” playing on TV, I have to stop and watch. The character reminds me of my dad, very tough but caring. I appreciate the discipline that he challenged me with and the strong faith with which he lived his life. My mom was the exact opposite. I remember my sisters’ dress patterns, yarn, scissors and cloth all over the place. My mother was all about being kind, being fair and being strong in faith. She was the most unselfish person I have ever known, and she was very much a hard worker. When I was in fourth grade, my dad was out of town on a Saturday and I had my very first football game on the other side of town. The car wouldn’t start, but that didn’t stop my mom. She packed us all up and we started walking, little sister in the wagon, older sisters on bikes, and me in a football uniform with my helmet in hand. We made it to my school, and she found a ride for me. She was so creative and resourceful. When I was in college, we didn’t have much extra money, but every Sunday I would come home with at least two teammates and I would do laundry and we would eat. She would cook enough food to feed an army, and it got to be quite a tradition. She just always worked things

out. She would never let me quit anything, and she taught me great determination. I still look at her favorite saying every day. It was embroidered and displayed in her bedroom. After she passed, my sisters and I were packing up her room. When it was my turn to pick something, it was the first thing I wanted. “I shall pass this way but once, Therefore any good that I can do…. Or any kindness that I can show… Let me do it now… For I shall not pass this way again.” Most important is my wife. I met Virginia in August 1984 at the Floyd County Red Apple Luncheon for first-year teachers. We went out in September and have been together ever since. If I could say one thing to her, it would be thank you. Thank you for every day, thank you for putting up with me, thank you for making my life special. I could have never hoped for a partner like she is. There is the saying that a person outkicked his coverage when he marries someone a little better than himself. Well I outkicked my coverage. She is better, kinder and such an amazingly hard worker. She is extremely talented and creative. She is an unbelievable mother who still spends the year looking for cool things to send the boys. If there is a bump in my boys’ lives, I’m sure they call mom first. Her love for Darlington and her students is truly inspiring. It is not easy being a coach’s wife. There aren’t many empty weekends and very few week-long vacations, but she has been there with me, working, helping, caring. We’ve moved 12 times, and she has never complained; she just held us all together. If you’re a parent, you know you run into rough patches, at times, when it seems like everything needs money – children’s braces, new roof, car repairs. We were going through that phase one time when a buddy of mine told me he had to refinish the floors in his warehouse and how much it was going to cost him. I was shocked and quickly spouted out that I would do it. I had no idea what I was doing, but here comes Virginia. For the next three days over spring break, we toiled, rented equipment from Home Depot, read the directions on the back of the products, and worked. Ten thousand square feet later, we were tired but done, and summer camp was again paid for. She has been my greatest partner and greatest gift.
In your opinion, what are the characteristics that an effective coach must have? Care, passion, hard work, organization, transparent communication, humility, empathy.

Darlington’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof” delighted audiences with heart, humor and memorable music at Rome City Auditorium in February. Set in 1905, the story centers on a poor dairyman and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, he tries to protect his daughters and instill in them traditional values in the face of changing social norms, and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. A universal story about faith, hope and family, “Fiddler on the Roof” examines cultural traditions, how we adapt when the world begins to change around us, and what we prioritize in the face of despair and loss.

Bob Hortman ('72) and his grandson, West ('31).
Dr. Bob Hortman (’72) From student to servant leader
State championships seem to run in the Hortman family. Ask Dr. Bob Hortman (’72) about his athletic abilities and he will quickly point to his sons and claim that they are the true athletes. Take a deeper look into family connections and you’ll see that the Hortman name is connected to seven Darlington state championship titles. Hortman’s sister, Cindy (Hortman) Meeker (’71, LD ’12), was a member of Thornwood’s state champion tennis team; Bob’s soccer team won the state soccer title in 1971; his brother, the late David Hortman (’77), was on the wrestling team when they won state; and both of Bob’s sons were members of the football and lacrosse teams when they won state titles.
20
“Soccer was something I did all four years of high school, but my real love for the school started when my children were here,” said Bob. “They were deeply involved in sports and activities, and I saw them grow into strong students and citizens. I got to know the inner workings of the school through parent organizations and booster clubs, and that is how my real love and appreciation for Darlington grew.” After high school, Hortman attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his B.A. in Chemistry. He went on to earn his D.D.A. from the Medical College of Georgia and complete his General Practice residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham before returning to Rome. He now runs a successful dental practice, Hortman Carney Dental. An active alum, parent, and grandparent, he has served Darlington in a number of ways. Currently chairman of the Board of Trustees, he has also been president of the Alumni Council, chairman of The Darlington Fund, and president of the Athletic Booster Club. Bob and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three alumni, all of whom have participated in Leadership Darlington: Robert Hortman (’99, LD ’18), Jeff Hortman (’02, LD ’15), and Janie Hortman (’03, LD ’13). Bob reflects on his experience as a Darlington parent with fondness and gratitude. “I had three very different kids,” he said. “They had unique interests, different skills, talents and passions. Darlington was able to meet all of them and help develop all of them. It’s something to be admired when a school can touch everybody in such a way.” In addition to serving Darlington, Hortman has remained connected to his classmates. Part of the glue that has kept the Class of 1972 together through the years is the 1971 Georgia State Championship Soccer Team. These brothers have remained close and held several reunion parties through the years. In the summer of 2018, the Classes of 1970-72 got together and
celebrated their coach Clint Schaum’s 80th birthday. “This reunion bonded us even more,” said Hortman. “Clint has always been good about staying in touch and keeping the team connected.” But soccer, it turns out, is just a part of the bond that connects the Class of 1972. “Our class has always been very close, loyally giving to The Darlington Fund and attending reunions,” said Hortman. “I attribute that to our class agent, Steve Winkler, who has always kept great communication going for our class.” Their bond has now translated into an even more tangible connection to Darlington, the creation of Lakeside Scholars, an endowment in celebration of their upcoming 50th reunion in 2022. “When we had our 45th reunion, we decided to do something meaningful as a class,” said Hortman. “My classmates, Crawford Brock and Gray Tuttle, have taken on the leadership role and are spearheading an effort to create this class scholarship.” Eleven members of the Class of 1972 are currently serving on the Lakeside Scholars Endowment Committee, and they have already raised over $400,000. “This close-knit group of Thornwood and Darlington graduates always leads the way with volunteer service to the school as well as their philanthropic giving, truly exemplifying Darlington’s mission,” said Julie (Wilson) Lucas (’97), chief advancement officer. “The Lakeside Scholars endowment program will be able to make a difference right away by providing financial assistance to more students wanting to come to Darlington.” The Hortman legacy continues at Darlington with Bob’s grandsons being the third generation to attend the school. West is a rising first-grader, and Wills will start pre-K this fall. “It’s so much fun having my grandchildren in school,” said Bob. “I’m able to kick back and just watch them grow. I can already see at an early age that they’re beginning to spread their wings and blossom at Darlington.”

Chantz McClinic (’04, LD ’14) Gratefully giving back
He grew up just a couple of miles from the Darlington campus, but it wasn’t until seventh grade that Chantz McClinic (’04, LD ’14) became a Tiger. Excited and nervous about the tr ansition, the Elson Floyd Scholar quickly found a role model in his seventh-grade English teacher, Ken Wempe. “I can remember our seventh-grade English exam like it was yesterday,” McClinic said. “It was on a short story that was only a paragraph long, and we had to diagram the entire thing. That is still one of my most difficult tests. Mr. Wempe was tough and influential. He didn’t allow me to take shortcuts, and this played an important role in my transition academically from public to private school.” In high school, McClinic had a successful football career and was named 2A first-team all-state as a defensive back. He also had success on offense, running for 1,210 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior. A multi-sport athlete, he competed in track, basketball, lacrosse and football. Darlington head football coach Tommy Atha says one word comes
Summer 2019
to mind when he thinks of McClinic – winner. “Chantz had a presence that was different from the time he set foot on our campus,” Atha said. “He was not just a crazy-good athlete, but he had a competitive mindset that set him apart. I’ve always believed truly great players have the ability to elevate the level of play for those around them. Chantz could do just that. He made his teammates believe that they could play at a high level because that’s what he did all the time. I always knew at some point he was going to make a play to change the game, and there’s no doubt he made me a better coach.” McClinic signed to play football at Wake Forest University in WinstonSalem, N.C., fondly recalling the help he received from Dean of College Guidance Sam Moss (’63) during the process. “I’m pretty sure Mr. Moss made me redo my college application twice,” he said. “And this was after I had already signed!” After redshirting his first season, McClinic played in all 11 games the following year, primarily as a special teams contributor. By his junior year, he was a starting linebacker and finished eighth on the team with 45 tackles; as a senior, that number jumped to 51. After graduating with a B.A. in Sociology, McClinic lived in Washington, D.C., for a couple of years before returning to Rome to serve as youth director at the YMCA.
“I was given the opportunity to lead the very programs that I had participated in as a child,” he said. “This was not only one of the most gratifying jobs that I’ve had, it was one of the most difficult.” McClinic is now a team leader and manufacturing supervisor at Southeastern Mills. He and his wife, Whitney, belong to Lovejoy Baptist Church. His service to the community and enthusiasm for mentoring youth hasn’t ceased or dimmed as he has moved forward with his career; it has been fueled by a strong desire to give back. Affectionately known as “coach” all across Rome, McClinic remains connected to the YMCA as a board member and basketball coach. “Now that I’m out of that setting (at the YMCA) professionally, working directly for the youth is still very important to me,” he said. “Now that I’m older, I’m able to give what they gave me back to others.” McClinic also coaches for Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation and Rome Youth League Football and serves as a chair of the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation’s Early Learning Center Committee. He’s a mentor at Anna K. Davie Elementary School, serves at the Changed for Life ministry program in Rockmart, Ga., and has traveled to Tanzania to build homes as part of the NYANYA Project for grandmothers who are caring for foster children diagnosed with AIDS. This calling of “service beyond self” has not gone unnoticed by the Rome community, and in February McClinic was honored with the 2019 Heart of the Community Young Heart Award. “I don’t think community service has an age restriction on it, and I think there are leadership skills that you can learn from serving,” he said. “So I would, and I do, encourage the young men that I mentor to be involved in the community, and my advice to younger kids is to find out what it is that you’re passionate about and start there. Ultimately, the goal is to leave this place in a better standing when we’re not here.”

Jane Campbell (’13) Focused on the future
It’s typical for children to give different activities a try, donning both ballerina slippers and sports jerseys as they experience new things. It’s r are when these early experiences translate into a laser-focused future, but that was exactly the case for Kennesaw, Ga., native Jane Campbell (’13). “I started playing soccer the same way everyone does, I guess, right after I learned to walk,” Campbell said. “I danced ballet, played basketball and tennis, tried soccer, and when I was 10 years old I decided to do travel ball for soccer.” Campbell continued to play tennis and basketball on the side, but as she approached high school became more active in soccer club play. Her freshman year was pivotal in that it solidified her desire to pursue her soccer dreams and still find a way to have success in academics. Campbell decided to make the transition to Darlington as a sophomore, joining another friend and soccer standout. “Allison Wetherington (’13) had been attending Darlington as a day student and was a close friend. She and Chad Liddle (Soccer Academy director), who I had been training with since seventh grade privately, each recommended that I come to Rome and become a more official part of the Soccer Academy,” said Campbell. The transition to Darlington was seamless due to the fact that Campbell was already playing occasional games with the Academy when she could.
Summer 2019
She was able to travel with Concorde Fire South, compete with the Soccer Academy, and even found time to play varsity basketball for the Tigers. “If it weren’t for Darlington, I wouldn’t have been able to do the soccer travel that I did,” said Campbell. “I’m grateful for how supportive everyone at Darlington was as I pursued my career. Teachers would videotape their classes and send assignments so that I could remain current with my classwork. I knew that I wanted to go to Stanford University, and I know now that if it weren’t for Darlington I wouldn’t have been able to attend.” While at Darlington, Campbell trained and played in the FIFA U17 World Cup for the U.S. National Team. At age 17, she became the youngest goalkeeper ever called to a national training camp for the senior U.S. women’s national soccer team. She was named a “Women’s Soccer Game-Changer” by Sports Illustrated and the 2012 Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, all before she graduated from high school. “Darlington is very unique and the boarding students have a very close community,” said Campbell. “We had this common bond of living on campus, dining together, going to study hall. Two of my best friends from high school were international students, one from Switzerland and one from the Bahamas. I would have never met the people I did if I hadn’t come to Darlington, and this definitely set me up for college success.” Both of Campbell’s parents are former Navy fighter pilots, and both parents were collegiate athletes, so her drive for success isn’t surprising to her family. Her mother, Chrystal, rowed crew at the Naval Academy, and her father (and current Darlington trustee), Mike,
played hockey and rowed at Wesleyan University. She followed the footsteps of her grandfather and great-greatgrandfather to Stanford University. Since leaving Darlington, Campbell has gone on to become one of the top young goalkeepers in the world. At Stanford, she played in 84 of a possible 91 games. She was named to the 2016 NSCAA All-American Team in her senior year and finished her collegiate career with 35 shutouts, tied for the most in program history. Campbell’s stellar career at Stanford led to her being named to the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in 2016, an honor soon followed by being drafted into the National Women’s Soccer League by the Houston Dash “Playing for the Houston Dash is a dream come true for me. My next goal would be to make the Olympic roster for 2020 and then from there just keep pushing away,” said Campbell. “Maybe one of these seasons I’ll be ‘Goalkeeper of the Year.’ I just keep trying to be the best player and the best person I can be and I really believe that the rest will fall into place.”

“My husband, Tom (’72), and I give to Darlington for five reasons: Jay (’27), Whit (’28), Wren (’28), Court (’31), and Sawyer (’31) – our grandchildren! We want them to have the same opportunity at a Darlington education and experience that their great grandparents, grandparents, and parents had because it works. Every time I am on campus, I am so proud of what Darlington has done for so many children and how lucky we are to have it in Rome.”- Terri (Huffman) Watters (’72T, LD ’13)

“Darlington gave me a solid foundation in all academic disciplines, but where I really stand out is in my communication and critical thinking skills. As a process engineer, I analyze problems, develop solutions and present the results as a story that leaders can understand. I can trace my professional success right back to English, math and science classes at Lakeside. I like to support Darlington financially so other students can have the same advantage I had.” - Jim Dent (’77, LD ’19) Mr. Winburn E. “We give to Darlington because of the special place it was to me and my husband and for our children as well. We have two children who are alumni and one in the Upper School. We’ve seen firsthand how important it is to support those things we are passionate about and that is why we continue to give to Darlington.” - Chris (Roberts) Morgan (’87, LD ’19)

“Choosing Darlington for our children was the single, best decision my husband and I ever made concerning their education. As a result, they are growing up in an environment rich in cultural diversity, taught by people who are passionate about their fields, while still maintaining a hometown familial atmosphere. We give to The Darlington Fund to show our support and appreciation for the place that gives so much to us in return, in the hopes that it will be able to provide this same experience for children, young adults, and families for years to come.” - Melissa Smyly, English Teacher

“Darlington School offers many opportunities for every student. Not only are the academics and fine arts unsurpassed, there is an extracurricular activity for everyone and a very competitive sports program. The environment at Darlington is one of dignity, respect, service, diversification, and honor above all. If there is an opportunity for you to attend Darlington or financially help someone attend Darlington, please consider this investment in someone’s life.” - Jerry Sharp, Former Faculty

“As result of alumni giving while I was a student at Darlington, both monetarily and through their time, I had the opportunity to benefit from a very relevant education. I give because enrolled students today have earned that opportunity as well.” - Thomas Kuckhoff (’09, LD ’19)

Gardner Wright (’47) Remembering a friend
From the moment he stepped on Darlington’s campus as a sixth-grader, Gardner Wright Jr. (’47) fell in love with the school and remained devoted to its mission for the rest of his life. Born Dec. 18, 1929, to Mary Lynn Brogdon Wright Tarpley and William Gardner Wright Sr., he was the great, great grandson of Daniel R. Mitchell, one of the five founding fathers of Rome, and the man who named the city. From an early age, Wright was a leader among his peers and was, therefore, awarded the school’s prestigious J. R. McCain Award. He served on the Honor Council for six years and as vice president two of those years. He was also business editor of the Jabberwokk and lettered in football and baseball.
Summer 2019
After Darlington, Wright earned his B.S. in Textiles from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a member and president of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and served on the Student Council. He was also a Cadet Lt. Col. in ROTC, serving as Battalion Commander. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1951 and joined the U.S. Army, where he served until 1953. Wright began his very successful career in the carpet industry with Anchor Rome Mills in 1953 and married the former Jeanne Brown of Marietta, Ga. The couple had two daughters, Suzanne (Wright) Protz (’71T) and Mary Helen (Wright) Heaner (’77). He became a partner and president of Modern Fibers Sales, which grew to be the largest importer of jute carpet backing from India and Bangladesh. In 1983, he was named vice president of sales and marketing and general partner of Synthetic Industries Inc., the secondlargest producer of polypropylene fabrics in the world. In 1996, he was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni of Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering. He retired in 2002. Wright is probably best remembered as a civic leader. He was active and held numerous leadership positions with the American Cancer Society, Berry College Campbell School of Business, Boy Scouts of America, Coosa Country Club, First Presbyterian Church, the founding committee of Floyd Junior College (now Georgia Highlands) and the Floyd College Foundation Board, the Floyd County Republican Party, the Floyd Healthcare Foundation, Rome Area History Museum, and SunTrust Bank of Northwest Georgia. He was honored by Rome Rotary Club in January for 63 years of perfect attendance. For his contributions to these organizations, Wright was recognized with the American Cancer Society’s 1995 Egie Huff Award; the Boy Scouts of America’s 1984 Silver Beaver Award as well as the council’s Distinguished Citizen Award in the early 1990s and in 2011; the Floyd Healthcare Foundation’s 2002 Good Samaritan Volunteer Award; the 2011 Rotary International District 6910 W. Lee Arrendale Vocational Award; and the 1997 Heart of the Community Board of Governor’s Award. In 2013, Wright
was honored, along with Congressman Phil Gingrey, for his service to the Floyd County Republican Party, and by the Georgia House of Representatives’ House Resolution 767 for his outstanding accomplishments. Wright’s lifetime of service to Darlington after he graduated is equally impressive. He took his designation as Life Trustee as seriously and thoughtfully as he did everything else, attending Board meetings and senior dinners through this year. He was also a member of the J.J. Darlington Society and the J. Daniel Hanks Sr. (’27) Heritage Society and was named Distinguished Alumnus in 2013. “Gardner was the Darlington Tiger we all strive to be,” said Brent Bell, head of school. “His remarkable personal and professional life embodied the Darlington ideal of service beyond self. Gardner was a remarkable man, and his ability to make each person feel important is what I will carry with me. Perhaps that ability to connect is tied to one of his life mottos, ‘Everybody ought to have a little fun every day.’” A constant at his side, Wright’s daughter, Mary Helen, said her father absolutely loved Rome, Darlington, people, and Jesus, and this was evidenced in all of his acts of service to school and community. Heaner’s class graduated 30 years after her father’s, and while planning her 40th reunion a couple of years ago she and her father took some time to look through the 1947 Jabberwokk. “We had the best time looking through his yearbook,” she said. “He could remember something nice and fun about every single person in his class. He remembered every single person, and that really impressed me. He loved everything about Darlington, from his friends to his teachers.” In late January, Wright returned to his beloved Darlington for one final time as his funeral was held in Morris Chapel. “Daddy had asked a long time ago to have his funeral in the chapel,” Heaner said. “We are so grateful to everyone who made it happen so beautifully.”

In Memoriam
Al Briley pictured with his daughters, Gena (Briley) Agnew ('74) and Ansley (Briley) Saville ('69T, LD '18).
Al Briley
Leaving a legacy During times of transition and change, it is the people at an organization that make moving forward possible. It’s fortunate for Darlington, and a bit by circumstance, that Life Trustee Al Briley stepped up to see the school through a critical time in its history. In 1973, when Darlington made the decision to begin enrolling female students, Briley was chairman of the Board at Thornwood School. This was a time of challenge for both institutions, and merging the schools had been discussed. “As I read the history of that time, it’s clear to me that decisions were made with the best interest of students in mind,” said Brent Bell, head of school. “The leadership of Mr. Briley and others in the community was exceptional and an example we strive to follow in our decisions today.” Following the merger, Briley became a member of the Darlington School Board of Trustees and was named chairman in 1977. His time as chair included final payment to contractors on the Zelle Fine Arts and Campus Center; the departure of Gordon Bondurant as president of the
36
school; and the search for Bondurant’s replacement, Jim McCallie. “Al was a great leader – a no-nonsense, get-the-job-done kind of guy,” said Jim McCallie, former Darlington president. “He was the perfect Board chair for me to have when I came to Darlington, having had daughters at Thornwood and then seeing Darlington through such a transitional time.” As a result of his outstanding service to both Thornwood and Darlington, Briley is one of a very small group of nonalumni to be named a Life Trustee of Darlington School. “It was wonderful that Darlington made Al chairman of the Board,” said McCallie. “It was his experience with the day school environment at Thornwood that helped him bridge the transition for Darlington because when Darlington and Thornwood merged, it became a predominately day school almost overnight.” A native of Columbus, Ga., Briley was born June 30, 1926. He graduated from Auburn University and earned his M.B.A. from Rutgers University. He joined the Army Air Corp in 1944 and served on the Island of Tinian in WWII. In 1946, he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant and returned to Columbus. In 1949, he married Martha Nell Ansley and they had two daughters, Ansley (Briley) Saville (’69T, LD ’18) and Gena (Briley) Agnew (’74). In 1960, the Briley
family made the move to Rome when Al joined First National Bank as executive vice president. After a successful banking career, he retired from SunTrust Bank in 1972, having served as president/CEO for many years. His career in banking may have been over, but Briley wasn’t ready to retire completely. He and longtime friend Vernon Grizzard Sr. purchased Southeastern Mills, where Briley served as president/CEO from 1972 until 1986 when he officially retired. Briley was devoted to his community and church and remained active in many civic organizations throughout his life. He served as a Life Deacon at First Baptist Church of Rome, chairman of the Board of Trustees for Shorter College, was a life member of the Rome Rotary and Rome-Floyd Chamber of Commerce, and served the Boy Scouts of America and United Way. Briley was married to Nell for 41 years until her death in 1990. He married Barbara Brown Hine Briley on April 4, 1992, and they shared 27 years together until his death on Feb. 1. “Al Briley was a true servant-leader known for his generosity, integrity, and ability to get things done,” said Bell. “His family legacy at Darlington is extraordinary and continues through today. As a community, we are grateful for his service and for the example he set.” Darlington Magazine
