ICA: INCOMPLETE ARCHIVE Concept, identity, website, and print materials for the Archive, an online archive that aggregates conceptIncomplete user-generated content from other social media sites. For the identity, we created twelve new versions of Michael Mischler’s monospace typeface T-Star. Project briefed and overseen by ICA’s lead designer Sarah Boris, and developed with fellow LCC students Toby Milner-Gulland and Daniel Samson.
Incomplete Archive is a proposal a project which encompasses web, nt and animated signage. It will act an archive for user-generated tent including written messages, ts, photographs and videos. There large volume of content produced visitors and followers of the ICA the purpose of this proposal is to ate a way where all this information be permanently recorded and erred to.

The font variations were designed to work well on screen - on displays and projectors at the ICA, as well as online. We created a number of different weights to allow a large amount of stylistic variation.
typography
At an early stage we decided on TStar Mono Round and Headline, designed by Mika Mischler in 2005 and released by Gestalten. The monospaced version has a few quirks but its rounded corners and strictly monolinear forms mean that it can still be readable. The headline variant (see below) was chosen to allow some additional versatility.
80pt tStar mono Light
80pt tStar mono regular
170pt tStar mono patterned variations (versions A to L)
80pt tStar mono Bold

We redrew or altered a number of glyphs in the typeface. Some of the changes were intended to improve readability and legibility (the @ symbol and the lower-case a); others had certain quirks removed (the Q and J).

ICA: INCOMPLETE ARCHIVE The website draws content automatically from other social media sites via a system of user groups and hash-tag recognition. Reflecting the ephemeral nature of social media, the homepage presents a series of modal windows, the content and positioning of which is randomly assigned at every refresh. The user can explore by dragging and clicking-through to further content. Older content (archived weekly), is accessed via a timeline slider at the top of the page. The ICA’s current program is indicated by a listing of upcoming events in the background, each with a timer that counts down to the moment of happening.
ICA: INCOMPLETE ARCHIVE A weekly print release features a listing of upcoming events, with a tear-off comment slip that allows users to contribute to the archive without going online. The reverse side features the listing of the previous week, overprinted with related user-generated images and comments. This content is automatically flowed into the design template from the website, without the need for input from a designer. The results can be printed in-house, using an ordinary office A3 laser printer, on pre-perforated and punched coloured stock.

ICA: INCOMPLETE ARCHIVE We also created an animation for display on a portraitorientated flatscreen monitor within the ICA foyer. Using live code, the content is constantly updated with current tweets from the website, alternating in display with upcoming programme information.
BIG ISSUES UNDER THE MICROSCOPE Self-directed campaign for The Economist, which uses panoramic photographs treated with a tilt/shift lens blur (a technique that causes the image to resemble a miniature model) and spatially integrated typography. Titled Big Issues Under The Microscope, the campaign refers to the publication’s reputation of tackling serious issues with quality journalism.

ISTD: FLATLAND Proposal for a new edition of Edwin A. Abbott’s 1884 satirical novella about parallel worlds, Flatland. Awarded MISTD in the ISTD Student Awards 2011.
ISTD: FLATLAND Each of the book’s 22 chapters is bound as a separate 8-page section, with tip-in covers in 11 different paper stocks, which form a gradient along the spine. The design also explores the theme of parallel spatial universes by mixing flat images with 3-dimensional interaction: the pages of each section fold to reveal text and resolve a graphic of the title of each chapter. The title graphics themselves were created by using a technique called anamorphic projection, in which flat images are distorted through projection onto multiple 3-dimensional surfaces.
CARUSO St JOHN IDENTITY Identity for architects Caruso St John. Project briefed and overseen by Bryan Edmondson, founding partner at SEA.
CARUSO St JOHN IDENTITY The design is based upon the concept that the practice is defined by the work it undertakes. The logo sits in relation to the name of each project, placed in the top left of the name of each project, which are ranged-right and vertically stacked. Close-up, semi-abstract photography reflects the practice’s use of distinctive and unusual materials. The muted colour palette is derived from the key materials of several previous major projects.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP REPORT Report detailing the internships and freelance work undertaken during the 2010 summer break, at studios such as SEA and SAS.
SUMMER INTERNSHIP REPORT The 38-page report includes photography, examples of work, and infographics detailing my time at each studio. Text is separated onto tip-ins, allowing full bleed images throughout.
FUTURISING 2010 Commission to create a means for visitors to give feedback on the 2010 University of the Arts Futurising graduate fair. Working within a tight budget, we created a neon sign from ropelight, and covered the walls with over 500 hand-drawn blank speech balloons for visitors to fill with their comments. The DIY/democratic approach did the trick—within less than two days all the balloons were filled. Project developed with Tim Janes and Toby Milner-Gulland.
WORK IN PROGRESS Spreads from a book of 26 projects in progress. Each project was initiated using a single word, one for each letter of the alphabet.
WORK IN PROGRESS The 26 projects involved the exploration of processes and techniques such as tilt/shift photography, anamorphic projection, and typeface design.
100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE Entry to the Penguin Student Award 2011. Featuring an image of Columbian artist Doris Salcedo’s installation at the 2003 Istanbul Biennial, in which the vacant chairs represent the lives lost to political violence Columbia’s turbulent history.
WAR OF THE WORLDS Designs for a new paperback and enhanced digital edition of H.G.Wells’ science fiction classic War of The Worlds. The cover design integrates photographic and illustrative imagery into a single image that wraps around the cover. Project led by Penguin cover designer Coralie Bickford Smith.
WAR OF THE WORLDS Wells’ original 1898 novel represents the first example of the concept of alien invasion within popular culture. The digital edition presents an infographic interface of the book’s legacy in popular culture. A radial timeline matrix and series of modal windows allow the user to navigate intuitively.
OXFAM CAMPAIGN Concept and campaign material for a new overseas work scheme for recently retired professionals. This multi-spread broadsheet advert presents a timeline of the lifespan of the scheme’s target audience. The first two spreads show highlights such as graduating from university and first job, before asking the question ‘But what about when you retire..?’ The final spread then introduces the scheme and indicates the possibilities of an active life beyond retirement in which the best years lie ahead.
ARTHOUSE COWBOY Concept and identity for Arthouse Cowboy, a series of DVD releases of the films of John Carpenter. Although many of Carpenter’s films maintain a cult appeal, previous marketing has failed to capitalise upon a potential arthouse audience. These designs, inspired by classic Penguin paperback covers of the 1960s, are an attempt to reach that audience.

POMMEL HORSE—LP1 The digital cut and paste approach of the band’s music is reflected in the cover image, which features an image created by overlaying 3 different images placed within the offset vector outlines of a repeating pattern.
WYATT NITE Identity and campaign material for Wyatt Nite—a club night based upon the premise of Wyatting.* The two part campaign involves black and day-glow stickers for pasting over existing posters, and a series of images created by ‘glitching’ stock photographs. * Named after musician Robert Wyatt, Wyatting is the practice of playing ‘difficult’ or unlistenable music in a public place, to provoke the annoyance of others.
