This term appears to be quite challenging as we had to independently organize our activities for the whole term, working on life projects. I chose to work on one of University of the Arts projects: a website and brand identity to support students’ transition into university and which would help to build a community atmosphere around university. It is a very challenging project for me, since I have never before designed a website, which was one of the reasons why I decided to be involved in this project. I felt that I could use all my knowledge and skills learned through my course and apply them into online reality. I was lucky that a few students from my course were interested in that project, although I had newer worked with them on a group project before. We had been offered complete design freedom and we were not required to stick to UAL brand guidelines.

The Supporting Student Transitions is a University of the Arts project created in response to the issues that many students face when coming to university for the first time. The aim is to create an independent website with and for students which realistically prepares them for the transition to HE study and UAL. It aims to provide real and timely information about what to expect and how to prepare for and get the most out of studying at UAL and in London. The site will provide advice and tips for students about life in UAL as well settling in London.

The aim is to design a successful brand identity for the portal and website designed to help prospective and first years students engage with University life and feel part of the community as well as helping them deal with problems that may occur, offering advice and useful contacts.

The project was started by an overview of existing UAL websites and printed matter. The visual elements were analised: typeface, illustrations, layout of the materials as well as content. This helped us to develop the visual look and possible content for the website.

Deciding on the name for the portal hmmm... It was quite difficult. I think even now some of us are not completely convinced about the name. But I think it is quite good and contains the message we are trying to communicate.

The first term of this year really helped me understood each element of the research process and showed me a variety of techniques that can be used and which have proved to be very useful in this project. Luckily, we could start building our research based on our own experience of being UAL students. But of course we needed a broader view on the topic, so we set off and conducted an online survey of UAL students. However, this was not enough and we needed a variety of responses. These needed to be visually based, not only text based, so we went around UAL colleges and talked to students and asked them a few abstract questions, encouraging them so as to draw the answers.

We wanet to make our survey intersting and interactive so we prepared a few diferent activities. One element of our face-to-face survey was to get students to complete equations based on expressive words, where they added a link word to complete an equation to obtain an indiwidual, unique meaning.

“I wish I’d known more about different university courses, particularly about - degree shows, to give myself more options for where to go to university.”
“How the fuck to use blackboard and find my timetables - they are SO ridiculous!”
“I am in Erasmus here, and I think I would like to know better the people from the University and the class.”
“That it costs more to live and study in London than I realized!”

To help us define the key elements of the required website design we deconstructed a selection of UAL websites. As a result of this exercise we were able to list the following very important elements of website design: logo / banner/ header / search tool / content list / central future / sub future/ sub footer / social links / footer
Logo / banner/ Header Search tool Content list Central Feature Sub feature Social links

Now we are at the stage of actual designing the webside and the identity for the portal. We started off with a quite corporate look to make it clean and simple. However feedback received encouraged us to take a more experimental approach and to apply handmade elements to give more friendly feel.

One of the elements that we thought would be very appropriate to use on the website is site bar feed, which would inform students about upcoming events in the week and could operate as a feed possible through Twitter and Facebook.

During this term I learnt a lot: looking for an internship and searching for life project opportunities gave me a preview of how it’s going to be when we graduate and are searching for jobs. It was all good experience, although the work experience that I had agreed didn’t happen in the end and instead I got engaged on a UAL project which is very interesting i guess gives an insight into freelance reality. It is quite a complicated project, so it will be continuing for another few months but I really enjoy it. Working for real people and collaborating with other students is really fun and at the same time I am learning so many new things as I go along.
