OBJECTIVE: To design a local DJ school in downtown Richmond that aims to demosntrate the art and diversity of DJing as well as educate students of all levels as well as showcase their work to the rest of community. The school will continue to value the greatness of vinyl

Statement: With the excess clubs in downtown Richmond and the huge DJ scene in the area, I believe this would be a great opportunity to teach the next generation as well as pass on the culture.

Summary

A powerful scene is when there is a DJ battle in a huge warehouse. The two DJs are shown battling by them and their equipment being at a higher level than the audience. Ever since I have been a student at VCU, vinyl collecting has been a huge part of my life. To this day, I still frequently collect vinyl and enjoy the quality sound of it.

A big inspiration for the DJ school was the 1992 movie “Juice,” which is also one of my all-time favorite movies. The movie revolves the character Quincy “Q” Powell as he wants to become more than just a local DJ. He enters a DJ competition

RESearch

As a part of my research I was able to meet up and interview leading Djs in Richmond such as DJ Ghozt ( bottom left), DJ Mordecai (center), and Black Liquid (bottom left). They were a major part in determining my program.

ACOUSTIC STUDY Flat vs. Sloped Ceilings

ACOUSTIC STUDY Paneling and sound reflection

ACOUSTIC STUDY Reflected Sound Patterns Concave Reflector “Concave sound-reflecting surfaces (such as barrel-vaulted ceilings in churches & curved rear walls in auditoriums) can focus sound, causing hot spots & echoes in the audience seating area. Because concave surfaces focus sound, they also are poor distributors of sound energy & therefore should be avoided where soundreflecting surfaces are desired (e.g., near stage, lectern, or other source locations in rooms).” (McKay, 1963)

Convex Reflector “Convex, hard-surfaced building elements, if large enough, can be most effective as sound-distributing forms. The reflected sound energy from convex surfaces diverges, enhancing diffusion, which is highly desirable for music listening. In addition, reflected sound from convex surfaces is more evenly distributed across a wide range of frequencies.” (McKay, 1963)

Flat Reflector “Flat, hard-surfaced building elements, if large enough & oriented properly, can effectively distribute reflected sound. The reflector shown below is tilted slightly to project sound energy toward the rear of an auditorium.” ((McKay, 1963)

THE SITE

SITE 201 W Broad Street History: The initial name for the building was The The J.B. Mosby Dry Goods Store. The J.B. Mosby Dry Goods Store at 201-205 West Broad Street became the city’s first fireproof department store in 1916. Designed by New York architects Starrett and Van Vleck, who also designed Richmond’s Lord and Taylor department store, this 6-story building now houses more than 50 loft apartments.
