Bathroom Exterior

Material: Wrinkled Copper Panel On the exterior of the building it is in a 5’6” semi-circle. From the title picture, it is obvious that the material was attached using pegs or some other horizontal suspension that gives it some distance from the actual wall. This is evident due to the fact that the copper drops a shadow in front of the red paint. The material result was most likely achieved by applying a copper sheet patina to an already developed, rough pattern. The material seems very durable and most likely can be cleaned easily by mosr cleaning solutions. Undoubtedly this is a beautiful material but it is a bit ironic that such a lavish material is only used for the exterior of an office bathroom. From that, it is very inappropriate for this function. Perhaps if the material was used more frequently in the space it would be more understandable for its placement in a bathroom entrance. Material: Burgundy and Balmy Seas Acrylic Paints Surrounding the large bathroom entrance doors, the space uses Burgundy and a blueish-green painted titled “Balmy Seas.” The paint goes from the ceiling to the floor. The colors do add an excellent appeal to the entrance and the burgundy paint acts as a nice addition to the copper panel, especially with the panel’s dropped ceiling hitting it. Most likely the paint was applied using rollers. The paint seems very durable although it may chip at some point and may need recoats every now and again. With the function of leading people to the bathroom, these colors do stand out enough to perform the appropriate action. Also, due to the fact the copper is used as well for the entrance, the flatness of the paint provides appropriate contrast.

Material: Brown Travertine Floor Tile

Most, if not all, of the walls of the bathroom are painted with the same Balmy Seas paint from the exterior entrance. Most likely the paint was applied using rollers. The paint seems very durable although it may chip at some point and may need recoats every now and again. The paint helps to cohere with the natural color of the tile flooring so the two provide an excellent marriage in the space. In that sense, the paint is very appropriate for the space. At the same time the color is a very tranquil color which is necessary in a space such as a bathroom.

The entire bathroom’s floor is comprised of 1’x1’ brown travertine tiles. The tiles were most likely installed by putting the tiles over a subfloor that was above the initial floor of the bathroom. Then the installers made sure that the floor was smooth and level before adding a grout in between the tiles. Most of the aesthetics of the tile come from its beauty from its natural color. For a bathroom, the use of a travertine floor tile is perfect due to its high durability. At the same time its natural greenish brown color goes well with the “Balmy Seas” color of the rest of the bathroom. Ultimately this material is very appropriate as it coheres with some of the other aspects of the bathroom naturally and provides a perfect smooth surface for features such as the toilet and countertop.

Material: Porcelain Like most bathrooms, the toilets/urinals are made of porcelain. Since the porcelain is white, it goes well with just about environment, making it appropriate in this environment. The durability is also very high and the material can be cleaned with just about any cleaning solution.

Material: Glass Wall Tiling

Public Restroom

For the counter of the sink, a glossy marble is used. The slab is about 4’6” wide. The slab is installed over a metal trapezoid that is bwteen the walls that designate the area of the sink. Then a gloss was administered onto the slab to create a shiny effect. The material has a high durability and can be cleaned easily using any type of cleaning solution. The material is appropriate as a sink countertop due to the fact that water is going to being hitting it constantly so the the reflectiveness of the material will help to counter the visual effects of those drips on the material.

Creative Workplace Interiors and Technology

At the sink of the bathroom, there are 2”x2” glass tiles that are about 1’6” above the sink. The aesthetics of the glass tiles is emphasized through its transparency, which is highlighted further when the lighting hits it just right. Like normal tiles, these glass tiles were probably applied in front of a subsurface and then grout is sanded in between the cracks for a smooth finish. The surface seems like it has a high durability and can be mantained simply by using a cleaning solution. For this specific function this material seems unnecessary other than creating a boundary between the sink and the rest of the bathroom. This is because the reflectiveness of the tiles competes with the reflectiveness of the sink, faucet, and countertop, making the area somewhat unbearable to look at. Material: Glossy Marble

Material: Acoustic Mineral Fiber This material is used specifically for the ceiling using 2’x2’ tiles. They were installed by creating a metal grid below the actual ceiling that would cohere with the ceiling tiles and then the tiles were applied afterwards. The material seems very durable with very little need for maintence. The material and function of the material are appropriate since it can hide some of the wiring that is necessary for the building. The choice of the material could have however been created through a better process since acoustic ceilings are so generic in commercial spaces. At the same time, the ceiling tiles provide very little coherence with the floor tiles. This however may not matter since white coheres with just about every color/ material.

Material: Cream Paint

For the entire bathroom stalls and paper towel dispensers, this stainless steel is used. It was constructed by bonding the steel under pressure to a sound-deadening honeycomb core. The material acts as a slab that lies about 6’6” in height and each partition being 4’ in width. Aesthetics of the material include its high reflectiveness. It seems to be very durable and easily cleanable. Due to the fact that its reflectiveness coheres with the rest of the reflective materials of the space and it has a very neutral color, this metal is very appropriate for the space, especially when the light hits it.z

For a majority of the bathroom, a cream paint is applied (most likely applied through rollers). The paint seems very durable although it may chip at some point and may need recoats every now and again. The cream paint is very appropriate due to its neutrality. this neautality allows for some of the other aspects to shine (such as the blueishgreen paint and assorted glass tiles). The paint does its job of fading into the background and defining the space.

Material: Oak Wood This wood is used specifically for the entrance door of the bathroom. Unlike most doors, this one goes from the floor almost to the ceiling, a height of about 9 feet and about 3 feet wide. The material was most likely by applying and smoothing several pieces of the same wood to ultimately create one giant slab. The material seems very durable and can be maintained using a cleaning solution that supports woods. For the space, it is very odd to have a very large wooden door for bathroom entrance but it works in this space as its color coheres with the natural color of the copper panel and travertine tile and contrasts positively with their linear forms as they point to the door.

Material: Semi-Transluscent Glass

Creative Workplace Interiors and Technology

This glass is placed in the space in the middle of the wooden door. and its dimensions are 7’x2’. The glass seems very durable due to its thickness and can be easily cleaned using an glass cleaning solution. Its use is very clever as it creates appeal and attraction to the space but fortunately does not reveal what it is inside. It is the ultimate key to creating mystery for the bathroom and teasing visitors to come inside.

Material: Crossed Basswood Fencing

Walnut wood is used as the material for most drawers and closet displays for clothes within the space as well as for the flooring. The material and furniture that it creates was constructed by stacking and smoothing several forms of walnut together to create wooden furniture. Like the basswood fencing the drawers and wood seem fragile, perhaps to emphasize the age the space is attempting to recreat for visitors. This material is very supportive and appropriate for the space by representing the strength of the era and the solidity as the World Wars affected every aspect of society. The material matches the “vintage-ness” of the space and the clothes sold in the space.

Material: Walnut Wood

Bygone's Vintage Clothing (Richmond, VA)

For the upper shelving within the store, crossed plywood fencing is used to barricade and store some of the vintage items that are not for sale as well as act as additional wall surface material. This material about 5 feet above the floor and is 2 feet high and 4 feet wide. The material was created by crossing thin strips of basswood and connecting then by wood glue and adding a white paint coat over the entire thing. The material seems very fragile because of its thinness and and may even be difficult to maintain because of this fragility. The material does go with the design of the space by having a vintage feel to it by somewhat resembling white pickett fences from the 1950’s. The material adds an excellent appeal of being “seen, not heard” within the space.

Material: White Vinyl Ceiling Tiles For the ceiling, the entire space uses a white vinyl tile as material for the ceiling. This material is used specifically for the ceiling using 2’x2’ tiles. At the same time, the ceiling tiles provide very little coherence everything else. This however may not matter since white coheres with just about every color/material. Material: Marble Flooring 1’x1’ tiles of marble are used for a specific section’s flooring within the space. To the naked eye it seems like a giant slab of marble. This form is created by adding marble tiles above a subsurface and having little space between the space in order to nudge them all together to create one giant piece.Unlike other aspects of the space, this flooring seems very durable, especially with the solidarity of all of the tiles being combined. It can also be easilty maintained by using an ordinary cleaning solution. However, the marble flooring seems inappropriate when it comes to cohering with the vintage feel of the space. The floor’s only function comes into play when it helps to divide the room according to gender-based clothing and time era.

Material: Green Floral Wall Covering In the vintage coat section in the front of the building, a green floral wall covering is applied to a northern wall of the space. The wall covering covers the entire face of the wall. This wallcovering was most likely installed using a clear adhesive and applying the wallpaper (in strips) to that adhesive. The wallcovering seems very fragile, aged, and more than likely to fall based on the strength of the adhesive. Due to the fact that the material is paper-like, it will also be difficult to maintain the condition of the material. Although this material may be seen as “tacky” in most environments, it goes well with the vintage theme of the space and is therefore appropriate. At the same time, the wallcovering’s design and color works well with the neutrality of the ceiling and color of the walnut dressers. Material: Mint and Forest Green Paints In order to define different “sections” of the store, designers used different shades of green as wall paints. The mint green paint is used in the front areas of the space while the forest green is used more in the back areas. The paint goes from the ceiling to the floor, reaching the vinyl finishes of each end. Most likely the paint was applied using rollers. The paint seems very durable although it may chip at some point and may need recoats every now and again. By defining the sections of the space, the paints prove to be very appropriate. They also provide a break from the overwhelming wall covering design without completely breaking away from the feel that it creates with its green color.

Material: Assorted Carpets

Retail Space

Bygone's Vintage Clothing (Richmond, VA)

Physically placed over the original marble and walnut wood flooring are several large carpets. These carpets are about 7’x3.5’. They are easily moveable and are in no way attached to the original flooring. Due to this, they are not very durable and vulnerable to several scuff marks and folds. The only possible function for these carpets would be to preserve the original flooring. Other than that they are very inappropriate as they break up the building more than it needs to be. Also, the carpets in no way help one another, so they are are inappropriate due to their incoherence.

Urban Farmhouse (Richmond, VA)

Material: Glossy Copper Sheet The dropped ceiling in the food prep area of the restaurant uses a copper covering on the faces of its walls. The dimensions of the material is about 15’x7’. It was most likely constructed by adding an adhesive to a solid structure and then adding a thin copper sheet to that form. Due to its height from the other areas of the building, the material seems durable and easy to maintain. However, as shown in the picture, the material may develop creases and folds that may need to be smoothed out The material is appropriate in adding a point of interest for customers, which is especially emphasized when the recessed lights hit it just right. Material: Dark Purple Paint In between the white finishes of the lower white wall and upper brick wall of the prep area, a dark purple paint is applied at the same level as the dropped copper ceiling. Most likely the paint was applied using rollers. The paint seems very durable although it may chip at some point and may need recoats every now and again. By defining the sections of the space, the paints prove to be very appropriate. Since the paint is at the same level as the dropped ceiling and resembles the color of the copper material somewhat, it is evident that the paint’s function is to define the dropped ceiling as a form that stretches across the entire restaurant instead of the dropped ceiling being represented only by its limited width. The paint establishes more space for the dropped ceiling and defines it in comparison to the white wall below and the brick wall above.

Restaurant

For the main shelving and walls of the food prep area, white paint is applied. Most likely the paint was applied using rollers. The paint seems very durable although it may chip at some point and may need recoats every now and again. The white paint is appropriate for this area because it gives the area neutrality since the dropped ceiling and top wall do so much with their expressive materials. At the same, the white paint creates a lot of contrast that will manage to successfully attract customers to that part of building if the dropped ceiling has not done so already.

Urban Farmhouse (Richmond, VA)

Material: Maple Wood Blocks Within the Urban Farmhouse Market and Cafe, there are several maple wood blocks and planks that create the basic structure of the bulding. These pieces of wood raise up to 15 feet high and stretch out to every boundary of the building. These blocks were installed underneath the flooring and are attached to one another horizontally through screws. From the picture on the left, this material does experience much damage but it is still durable. To cohere with the “rural concept of the space, the material does work well by using it natural texture to create a welcoming appeal to the space. If any other material was placed around these blocks, the feel of the space would be completely different. Whether they appeal to the space or not, these blocks are necessay to keep the area structured. Material: Linestone with green paint coat The Urban Farmhouse uses limestone to create fluted colums. These columns were created by creating an smoothing pieces of limestone and putting them all together to create one giant piece. These columns are very inappropriate to the space as they create an impression that the restaurant is very formal and structured when really the personality of the space is the complete opposite. Whether they appeal to the space or not, these fluted columns are necessay to keep the area structured. The green paint does soften this formal impression these columns createm but not enough that they can finally be seen as appropriate to the space.

Material: Maple Planks

Red brick is applied in the upper section of the walls of the building. This means that the material is applied at a height starting from 8 to 10 feet high all the way up to the ceiling. Since this brick is probably a part of the original building, these brick are less durable than the more renewed aspects of the restaurant. The brick wall is not very appropriate when put with some of the other materials of the building. This is because the texture and details of the material are so overwhelming that they disregard the neighboring materials that cohere with the rest of the building. This is shown especially with the plank ceiling, whose form works well with the other wood-based materials of the space while the brick adds nothing to the conversation but simple, unnecessary contrast.

Urban Farmhouse (Richmond, VA)

The ceiling of the space is made up of Maple planks of wood that occupy the ceiling. The height of the ceiling is over 20 feet high. This material is appropriate because its linear form resembles a barn which ultimately coheres with the concept of an “Urban Farmhouse.

The planks were most likely installed by putting the planks over a subfloor that was above the initial floor of the building. Then the installers made sure that the floor was smooth and level before adding a grout in between the tiles. Most of the aesthetics of the flooring come from its beauty from its natural color. The maple flooring coheres with the high ceiling as well as the posts within the building, making it very appropriate as well as successful when it come to establishing a rural-like identity for the space. Like the other wooden aspects of the space, the form creates a since of direction that helps to guide customers throughout the space.

For the shelves and exterior doors of the building, plywood planks built together and then painted using different shades of green. These colors go along with the concept of nature that comes with the idea “Urban Farmhouse is trying to represent. These green accents go along well with the natural wood color to illustrate this concept well.

For the walls of the lobby of the Library of Virginia, a silver granite tile is used. Each tile is 1’x2’. These tiles were installed on a subsurface on the wall and then smoothed together using a grout. Due to the roughness of the material, the tiles seem very durable but difficult to maintain. The material is appropriate for the space because it has a rigid, linear, and rough form that coheres with some of the other areas of the lobby including the ceiling, reception area, and stairs. The use of a natural material helps to symbolize the traditionalism of the state of Virginia and its amazing history.

Material: Aluminum Ceiling Panels The lobby ceiling is comprised of aluminum ceiling panels. The height of this ceiling is over 30 feet high. More than likely these panels were installed underneath a concrete ceiling by adhesives. The linear forms and pathwways that the forms create go well with the other materials that provide the same function. Overall this idea of guiding visitors is significant, especially for a site such as a library.

Material: White Concrete For the other pathways of the lobby that lead to the conference rooms, white concrete is used for the ceiling that is about 15 feet off of the ground. Perhaps the material was installed by combining several small white concrete tiles in order to create one single slab. Like other materials in the space, this one is very linear and therefore directional. These features of the ceiling are emphasized even more with the recessed lights within the ceiling guiding visitors throughout the space. For this reason, the material is very appropriate for this site. In addition this material is used as a background for the assortment of plants displayed in the lobby, acting as contrast to the plants reflective aluminum elements.

Material: Mahogony Wood

Building Lobby

Library of Virginia (Richmond, VA)

Little details of the lobby, such as the reception desk and the interior of the display areas, are accented through the use of mahogony wood. This is very appropriate for the space becase it allows what needs to attract visitors to contrast with the rest of the building. For example, someone would need to visit the reception desk if they entered the building, so it is great that the mahogony defines some of the greyer aspects of the lobby such as the granite walls and aluminum ceiling.

The same type of aluminum used for the ceiling is also used for the stands that hold the display plants. In fact the pots that the plants are in are also aluminum Material: Cream Marble Tile For the floors of the lobby of the Library of Virginia, a cream marble tile is used. Each tile is 2’x3’. These tiles were installed on a subsurface of the floor and then smoothed together using a grout. The material seems durable and easy to maintain using any type of cleaning solution. The material is appropriate for the space because it has a rigid, linear, and rough form that coheres with some of the other areas of the lobby including the ceiling, reception area, and stairs. Library of Virginia (Richmond, VA)

Black marble tile is used for the middle of the lobby leading towards the stairs. These tiles were installed on a subsurface of the floor and then smoothed together using a grout. The material seems durable and easy to maintain using any type of cleaning solution. The linear grid of the tile is appropriate in leading and defining the stairs of the lobby. This idea of emphasizing the stairs through the material is evident as well by there being black marble on the sides of the staircase. Ultimately, the material helps to create a pathway in an appropriate way for those who want quick walk through the lobby instead of just examining it for a long period of time.

Material: Silver Granite (cont.) Silver granite is used for the steps of the library lobby as well as the security desk and lobby benches. Instead of defining the granite as individual tiles, the tiles are put closer together on top of the given surface in order to give the impression that the material is a single, large slab. Due to the roughness of the material, the tiles seem very durable but difficult to maintain. The material is appropriate for the space because it has a rigid, linear, and rough form that coheres with some of the other areas of the lobby including the walls, ceiling, reception area, and stairs. Using the same material for both the stairs and walls of the lobby was an excellent and appropriate idea as it allows for visitors to focus specifically on the stairs and the enclosing walls while the other materials merely act as support for this perspective.

Building Lobby

Library of Virginia (Richmond, VA)

Silver granite is used also for the benches and security desk of the lobby, creating the same effect that the stairs create (highlighting themselves by having the same materiality as the walls around them, creating a spotlight perspective for the furniture) but in a much smaller way.
