WELCOME TO THE LATEST ISSUE OF
DARTFORD LIVING
BY THE COMMUNITY, FOR THE COMMUNITY Dear Readers, Merry Christmas from all the team at Dartford Living. Welcome to the December magazine. As usual it’s jam packed with lots of local information and local businesses. Please support as many as you can - use them or lose them! In case you weren’t aware, we run Dartford Living alongside volunteer members of the local community FOR the local community. It’s the only independently run magazine serving the local area with information, fun, good news and positive local stories! Please get in touch if you would like to write an article for the magazine. If writing is not for you then perhaps you could volunteer to deliver 100 or so magazines to your local roads - you will guarantee your copy of the magazine and get a little exercise as well! If you don’t always receive a copy directly through your door, you can pick up a copy from various drop off points including Dartford FC, local libraries, Fairfield Leisure Centre, The Orchard Theatre, The Priory and Orchard Shopping Centres, Stephen Oliver Art Gallery, health centres and local Nationwide and Barclays branches. Additionally, if you email editor@dartfordliving.com we will add you to our e-newsletter and you will join 7,000 others who receive a copy of the magazine by email once a month. Until next time, Vijay - Editor, Dartford Living (and the rest of the fantastic Dartford Living volunteer team)

So Dartford Living has come a long way from it’s first edition. The magazine is now 60 pages long and read by about 30,000 people locally each month. We are also able to offer design, marketing and all kinds of advertising and networking opportunities for local people and businesses. We regularly support various charities and local organisations including Darent Valley Hospital Valley Charity, Dartford District School’s FA and lots more. The magazine is still run by volunteers, with all the money generated going to paying for the printing of the magazine, supporting local events or creating various events and online portals that will help local businesses.

BIP BOP BLOG by Charlotte Wise
‘CHRISTMAS IS COMING!’ Hi DL Readers! I think it’s fair to say that as we are now in December, we can now mention CHRISTMAS! I love Christmas! Not just because of the food, gifts and everything in between but also because this year is the first year that my little boy actually understands it and as he knows Santa is watching, he is BEHAVING! (I wish I could use this excuse all year round!) Despite the fact it’s my busiest time of year with BipBopShop selling traditional wooden toys, I have managed to put a little plan in place of Christmassy things to do in the run up to the big day and I thought I’d share... 1) Visit to Santa! We’re off to Millbrook Garden Centre! We’ve never been before but have heard great things. Plus everyone loves a good garden centre at Christmas! 2) Light Night at Bluewater. We went to this shortly after Bonfire Night but I would definitely recommend adding it to your diaries for next year. A lovely combo of fireworks, Christmas music, the arrival of Santa and the Christmas light switch on around the shopping centre. It was incredibly well organised and it made us feel oh so Christmassy afterwards! 3) Local Christmas fairs. These are always a winner to get you in the festive mood whilst supporting lots of small local businesses. I’ve set up my shop at lots of these recently and have been known to spend my earnings finding bespoke and unusual Christmas presents for my family. So if you see an advert for your local school, church or charity that’s hosting one, do m a ke s u re yo u show your support. Shopping small can go a long way for our little local businesses. 12
4) Panto! We’ve booked Aladdin at the Orchard Theatre! ‘Oh yes we did!’ Again, Little Man is just about old enough for it this year and we cannot wait to take him to his very first pantomime show! 5) Christmas Concert/Party. We have one of these at our local nursery which is great excuse for the children to dress up, make some sort of arts and crafts sensation and eat plenty of mince pies! Check with your local school, nursery or baby class when your’s will be. And all of the organising, decorating, present wrapping and bad carol singing will be fuelled by drinking Christmas coffee! How amazing is the Orange Latte at Costa? Did you know that Babycinos are also free in most coffee shops so the little ones can join in too! Do follow me @BipBopMum on Twitter/Instagram/ Facebook for all the latest antics, reviews and recommendations over the next few weeks. But for now, I wish you and your families a very very merry Christmas! Until 2019! Charlotte x

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS by Local Resident, Jane Stevenson
THE GOOD LIFE I’m sure the formidable Margo Leadbetter from’ The Good Life’ would take issue with foragers! Gathering Wild Plants – 1968 Theft Act Section 4, subsection (3) A person who picks mushrooms growing wild on any land, or who picks flowers, fruit or foliage from a plant growing wild on any land, does not (although not in possession of the land) steal what he picks, unless he does it for reward or for sale or other commercial purpose. Well, that is a relief! I’ve spent a pleasant summer doing exactly this on my walks. Apples, pears, blackberries, all freely available from the field side of the A2 (if you can deal with the noise), onions and peas left lying on the ground weeks after harvesting, elderberries and elder flowers all along the fields. It’s been a bumper year ! Eldest Offspring threw a spanner in the works at one point as she questioned whether I was stealing! I was horrified as the thought hadn’t entered my head. Thankfully that bit of cut and pasted legislation seems to answer the problem. A note about mushrooms though. Don’t pick them unless you are certain what they are. Many are poisonous – health and safety people. I’ve been told that you can cook and eat nettles too , so I’d not go hungry in this area. If only someone, somewhere would grow a chocolate tree! PERSONAL AND PETTY It’s all a bit miserable here in the outskirts of Dartford. Stirrings of anger are surfacing and our local social media site is alive with comment and ire. We seem to be in the grip of a spate of petty crime. The recent posts advise of cars being broken into, some damaged and other small but annoying antisocial acts. I’m sure many of us have been at the mercy of
the wheelie bikers. I’ve heard of one person who had their delivery of milk and eggs ‘removed’ from the doorstep, and have told one unexpected visitor myself there was nothing of interest for him down my drive! Such posts are often accompanied by grainy pictures from personal CCTV – and a great deal of rhetoric as who is to blame. The simple fact is we are starved of an efficient method of policing the area. Petty crime is so low down in priority, it is often not reported, yet to the average homeowner it is a violation of their lifestyle and personal space and should not be accepted as a sign of the times. While our understaffed and over stretched police struggle to deal with the bigger problems in the area, it looks as if we must sort out local concerns ourselves. I do not advocate vigilante groups roaming the streets – Charles Bronson springs to mind - but I do think we could all help each other. Be aware of strangers in the area; are they loitering outside houses, taking photos on their phones? Lock your cars at night and don’t leave anything of value inside the vehicle. Don’t advertise the fact you’re going on holiday on social media, and leave lights on if out for the night. Simple stuff! Some time ago I considered starting a Neighbourhood Watch group for my road. I gathered all the information together, but there didn’t seem to be anything much of substance. Personal circumstances prevailed, and I took it no further. I know this problem affects communities all over Dartford. Perhaps it will take some joined up thinking to solve. The community working together to get a positive result. We might even make some new friends in the town. I’d be interested in such an initiative. Best wishes for 2019 everyone.

HMP SWALESIDE by Bob Chapman - Local Resident
Could you make a difference? Could you look behind closed doors? I have just got back from spending the day in prison! HMP Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey to be precise. I haven’t done anything wrong; at least I don’t think so. Quite the reverse. I’m a member of Swaleside’s Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) - a group of ordinary members of the public doing an unusual job. The role is voluntary, but travel and subsistence expenses are paid. Inside every prison, immigration removal centre and some short term holding facilities at airports, there has to be an IMB. IMB members are independent and unpaid, and are ultimately appointed by the Secretary of State, to whom each Board reports annually. We are the eyes and ears of the Minister on a day to day basis in each prison. The role is to monitor the ongoing life of the prison and ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained. No qualifications are required and training is provided. You do need to be enthusiastic and open minded, a natural communicator and possess sound, objective judgement. As long as you are 18 years old or over, your background can be as a student, a person of working age or retired, from any ethnic or cultural group. Members have unrestricted access to all areas at all times
24
and can talk to any prisoner they wish to - out of sight and hearing of members of staff if necessary. A typical monitoring visit, for example, might include time spent in the kitchens, workshops, accommodation blocks, recreation areas, healthcare unit and chaplaincy. The average commitment is around 3 to 4 days per month, which includes a monthly meeting. Board members also play an important role in dealing with problems inside the establishment. If a prisoner has an issue that he or she has been unable to resolve through the usual internal channels, he or she can put in a confidential request to see a member of the IMB. Problems might include concerns over lost property, visits from family or friends, special religious or cultural requirements, or even serious allegations such as bullying. If something major happens at the establishment, for example riots or deaths in custody, representatives of the board have to be called in to attend and observe the way in which the situation is handled. This is a worthwhile and rewarding voluntary activity where you can make a difference. The Board at Swaleside is recruiting new members to join its existing team, and if you think this is for you, then please email, in the first instance to me, Bob Chapman, at clatrout@aol.com with your contact details, so that I can give you more information. You can also research more material on the IMB website at www.imb.org.uk.

RECIPE - GINGERBREAD HOUSE by Debbie Dickinson
We have a family tradition in our house – I bake and construct our gingerbread house, and then daddy and the kids decorate it! It usually ends up with a lot of sweets on it!!! Then, usually on Boxing Day, it gets unceremoniously ripped apart and eaten!!! You will need: 125g unsalted butter 175g soft brown sugar 100g golden syrup 350g plain flour 1 egg ¾ tsp bicarbonate of soda 3tsp ground ginger 2tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground nutmeg What to do: Sift all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. You can adjust the spices to your liking. Gently heat the butter, sugar and golden syrup together in a saucepan until melted, stirring to combine. Add the egg to the dry ingredients and mix. Pour the melted sugar mix in and stir until the mix
forms a smooth dough. Wrap the dough and pop in the refrigerator for at least a couple of hours. Roll out the dough between 2 pieces of greaseproof paper to about 5mm and cut shapes required. You can find lots of gingerbread house templates if you search on the internet. Print them out and cut out the shapes. Lay the template on the dough and use a knife to cut round each shape. Use small star/heart / circle cutters to add windows and details etc. Put the shapes onto a baking tray - on greaseproof paper – and pop back in the fridge for 30 mins. Bake in a preheated oven at 180° (160° Fan) for approx. 10 mins until light golden. Leave to cool on a wire rack before removing from the tray. Use Royal icing (this can be bought readymade) to glue your house together (and to a cake board). Do the walls first and leave to set overnight before adding the roof. Then use the royal icing to add sweets/chocolate and pop some in a piping bag to pipe decorative swirls etc around the house. Enjoy!

ELLENOR - LIGHT UP A LIFE by ellenor
Individuals, families and communities across Kent will come together in memory of loved ones at the Lights of Love services in December. The death of a loved one is never easy but at Christmas time, when friends and family gather, absences can be magnified. At ellenor, we know that at this special time people need our care more than ever – they feel the loss of those they hold dear even more, which is why we hold our Lights of Love services on Saturday 8 December, 3-7pm. Our uplifting and heart-warming services offer all families – including those who haven’t been supported by ellenor’s services - an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones who are no longer with us. It is a time to share in the remembrance of a life lived and show mutual support for family and friends. “When you walk through the door, the atmosphere at ellenor is so caring. The staff have been so supporting of our family in our time of need and helped us through this difficult time. We have found the Lights of Love services hugely comforting and an opportunity to come together to remember our loved ones in a special way. Please support this brilliant worthwhile charity to help other families in their time of need.” – Kay By donating to the Lights of Love appeal, you can dedicate one or more lights on our Christmas tree in memory of your loved one. It’s a special way to commemorate their life whilst helping other local families coping with
26
terminal illness this Christmas. The name of your loved one or loved ones will be displayed in the annual Lights of Love book which you can view throughout the year at ellenor Gravesend. This year to meet demand two services will take place at ellenor, Coldharbour Road, Gravesend; the first service at 3:30pm and the second at 6pm (doors open 3-7pm). The non-denominational services are an opportunity to pause for reflection and through music, readings and the lighting of candles, commemorate lives and loves past. During the afternoon you can also light a candle and write a message on a Christmas star, which you are then welcome to either take it home or hang it on our indoor tree, in remembrance of your loved one. There will also be an opportunity to treat yourself to a delicious mince pie and warming beverage, and a selection of Christmas cards and gifts from our ellenor shops. If you would like to dedicate a light on our Christmas tree in memory of someone special please visit www.ellenor. org/lights-of-love or call our Supporter Care Team on 01322 626509. Head of Wellbeing, Dr Russ Hargreaves said, “Christmas can be a wonderful time for many, but we are reminded every year of how difficult it can be for some. It is a real milestone for friends and families after a loss and we recognise the importance of stopping for a moment and celebrating the lives of our loved ones”.

RESCUE IS BEST
by Battersea Dog and Cats Home - Brands Hatch
We have teamed up with Battersea Dog and Cats home - Brands Hatch to bring you regular listings of animals requiring rehoming. Name: Buddy; Breed: Lurcher; Sex: Male; Age: 3 years 6 months; Centre: BBH; Reference: 357448 This very good looking Lurcher does enjoy the better things in life. He likes to sleep on a sofa, really enjoys human company but doesn’t do rain. Buddy will keep himself and you amused by throwing his toys in the air and catching them, but he would rather have a human do this for him as he loves to interact with people. Buddy loves to run and can distracted easily by the environment so will need support from his owners when it comes to time off lead. We can give you practical advice on how to work on this using a soft harness and longline. Buddy does have good social skills with other dogs and could live with a dog with similar play and activity levels but would need to be aware of his high chase drive around small dogs. This dog needs a quieter location with a secure garden where he can practise his zoomies and a family who are around most of the time because he can get depressed if left on his own. Buddy is super friendly around people but doesn’t like to be overcrowded. This dog so wants human and possibly dog buddies so please contact Battersea Brands Hatch if you are those people on 01474 875 106 or bbh.rehomers@battersea.org.uk Name: Molly; Breed: Domestic Short-hair; Sex: Female; Age: 10 years 1 months; Centre: BBH; Reference: 366064 Molly is a cat who loves to be around people, she enjoys watching people and making sure everything going on around her is to her liking. She is a very youthful 10-year-old and is an explorer, she is inquisitive and I’m sure she won’t mind us saying that she looks very young for her age. Since being in the cattery, Molly has enjoyed spending her days sitting in her cat tree looking out of the window, watching the world go by and receiving treats from her visitors. Molly loves being outside and would enjoy spending time in a garden in her new home. Please contact Battersea Brands Hatch ifinyou are those people on 01474 875 106 or Rock Painting Dartford. bbh.rehomers@battersea.org.uk Local people from Dartford Painted Rocks on Facebook have been busy this month painting and hiding them around town. The rocks can also be exchanged at Stephen Oliver: Studio and Gallery located in the Orchard Shopping Centre.

SPORTS NEWS Bav’s Sporting Comment
Wayne Rooney won his 120th cap in a fund-raiser for his charitable foundation, against the USA last month, on a night England showed their appreciation for their 33-year-old record goalscorer. For all the mixed opinions evoked by the Football Association’s decision to give Rooney a sentimental final run-out for his 120th cap, there appeared no doubt in the minds of the Wembley crowd that this was a worthwhile exercise. When the former England captain appeared before kick-off with his four children through a guard of honour formed by both teams to receive a presentation from FA chairman Greg Clarke and Harry Kane, it was the start of a genuine show of affection. The DC United striker was given a standing ovation when the big moment arrived, and he came on for Lingard for that final 33-minute appearance. Rooney also took the acclaim of the crowd at the final whistle as the curtain came down on his England career.

YOUR DECEMBER FITNESS TO-DO LIST By Mark Broadbent In December many of us tend to let our guard down with regard to our health and fitness regimes (if we have one in place to begin with). We’re busy with “busy work” and our exercise efforts can quite easily take a back seat to shopping, lunches and dinners, hangovers, kids and more. It’s important to make time to fit your exercise in, even if you have to shorten your workouts or train at home. Skipping workouts leads to skipping more workouts and then, like the classic diet, the “I’ll start again on Monday” promise that translates to a complete blowout. There’s no denying that at this time of year we have extra work to do – busy times at work or deadlines to meet; yes, the shopping does need to be done; and yes, there are lots of social things going on – but if you don’t take time for yourself you’ll be left in January feeling beaten and depressed and looking at what seems like a huge challenge ahead to lose weight and get fit again. So here are some tips you may find useful through December to try and keep on top of things. Remember, at this time of year if you struggle to maintain your exercise and healthy eating, your focus should just be on maintaining your current weight, not on losing weight. As long as you’re not gaining weight you’re doing better than most, and also probably better than previous years! Tip #1: Make time. It’s not as hard as it sounds, just schedule in your workouts and stick to it – things will crop up and get in the way, but you need to keep to your schedule for yourself. Other things can wait, because in the end, your health is more important and one missed workout can snowball. Find a time that you think you’ll be able to allocate to a workout and schedule it in. If you have the time to train in the morning – do it then. If not, train as soon as you get home from work (maybe even change into your gym kit before you leave). The longer you leave it, the more likely you are to skip it. Tip #2: Pace yourself. Just because you’re on a night out, doesn’t mean you have to guzzle your way through 3 bottles of prosecco or a dozen pints. Enjoy your drinks, don’t neck them. And avoid shots! As an extra bonus you might avoid the end-of-night junk food binge too! Tip #3: Don’t take cakes, sweets, chocolates etc. into work. Chances are most of your co-workers will be trying to avoid the Christmas weight-gain too so stick together and be strong! If someone offers you treats, try to politely decline as much as possible. If you receive a box of chocolates as a gift, don’t open them, or gift them on (preferably to someone who’s not watching their weight). Tip #4: Catch up on lost sleep. The late nights associated with all the get-togethers will have an impact on your health. Sleep is your best tool for keeping off the pounds. You’ll feel better and have more energy (= less skipped workouts), you burn the most
fat (proportionally) when you sleep, your body recovers and repairs and your hormones rebalance. If you miss sleep, be sure to catch up on it somewhere – try to avoid shifting your wake up time too much, just take a nap in the afternoon when possible to make up for a late night or get to bed earlier the following night. Tip #5: Walk more. To make up for the extra calories you’re likely consuming, and possibly (but hopefully not) missed workouts, try to get more activity during the day. Park at the back of the car park. Walk instead of taking the bus. Climb the escalators instead of waiting to be delivered at the top etc. Little things that you do daily add up. That being said, walking isn’t the most efficient activity for weight loss, so don’t sacrifice a workout for a walk, but if you can add walking in where it wasn’t before without cutting into your day, do it. Tip #6: Drink lots of water. A glass of water when you wake up (before your tea/coffee) will help you rehydrate; a glass before meals will help you to eat less; a glass or two on a night out will slow down your alcohol consumption; water during the day will help you focus and may help reduce snacking; there are no down-sides to staying hydrated and many upsides, so it’s a no-brainer really. Tip #7: Use your diary. This is similar to tip #1, but we tend to find ourselves wasting a lot of time all through the year, especially at Christmas. Plan your days and make them efficient. You’ll be amazed how much you can get done when you have a clear plan rather than just winging-it. Plan your day the night before – write your to-do’s, allocate time for meals and workouts, get the small things ticked off quickly and be sure to make time for yourself too. Things will get in the way, but just stick to plan and deal with extra things as soon as they come up. Obviously there are many more things you can do to stay on track, but scheduling your days will likely have the biggest impact. If you’ve been prepared and done all of your Christmas shopping already then you have one less thing to worry about – work on your plan of action for the nights out and think about when you’re going to have your workouts, and make better choices when the temptations are abundant. When January comes you’ll be ready to hit the New Year running and focus on your health and weight loss goals without having to first undo all the damage done in December. If you need help with your training and/or nutrition, visit www. DartfordBootcamps.com for more information on Nutrition Coaching and Bootcamp. A NEIGHBOURLY-LIVING COMMUNITY PLANNED FOR THE GARDEN CITY by Susan Norris With a huge garden city taking shape on our doorstep, you might be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed with the number of new homes that will be appearing in the area. We are a group of future residents with a different proposition called cohousing, a form of communityled housing being encouraged by the government, and already approved as a concept for the garden city by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation. Cohousing is an intentional community of typically 15-30 homes that are co-created and then managed by future residents - us - with shared public spaces, like a common house where we can all eat together sometimes if we want (though we also have our own kitchens) and where other possessions, like tools, books, cars and bikes can be shared, as well as everyone’s skills of course! It’s all decided by the future residents. It’s not a commune but only people that want to live in a neighbourly way can be part of the cohousing community as the idea is to be friendly, mutually supportive and social in the public spaces, but enjoy privacy in our own homes. Our plan is for an intergenerational cohousing community in the area, which means all ages living
together and we currently have people in all age bands from age 1 to 65, with people joining us all the time who are interested in this emerging concept within the UK. We have single people of various ages, including single parents, couples, older and younger people from a wide range of backgrounds that are all interested in co-creating a better type of community. As we are in control of the design process too, we are opting for highly energy-efficient homes that are eco-friendly and cheap to run in the future, with all the best features we can afford, but its not a group Grand Designs project where money is no object. We want to do modern housing better than many of the new developments offer, but the magic is in the people who move in and the more social lifestyle cohousing offers. However, we are still on the hunt for land and welcome anyone with ideas or contacts. We have regular meetings in Kent so you are welcome to come along and meet us, or visit www.kentcohousing. co.uk, or join us on Twitter or Facebook (same name) and see it you might like to join us on our cohousing journey at Ebbsfleet Garden City. Visit www. cohousing.org.uk to find out more about cohousing and examples of other successful projects in the UK. email: info@kentcohousing,co.uk

THEATRE ROUNDUP By Liz Dyer
It’s Christmaaaaas! And that can only mean one thing panto season is here again. There’s still time (oh yes there is) to grab your tickets for Aladdin at the Orchard, which - in case you’ve somehow managed to miss it - this year stars Marti Pellow, along with Ricky K and David Robbins. But in the meantime, let’s take a look back at a few of the highlights we’ve enjoyed here in Dartford over the last twelve months. What’s been your favourite moment? Music first, and this year has been a particularly good one for celebrating musical legends. Cilla the Musical got us off to a spectacular start, followed over the next few months by the equally excellent This is Elvis, Thriller and Let It Be. Meanwhile Beautiful, the Carole King musical, more than lived up to its award-winning reputation, we enjoyed a Summer Holiday with Ray Quinn and friends, and Rock of Ages had us all rocking out to the classics. TV and movie fans also had plenty to enjoy in 2018. Monty Python aficionados and newbies alike were delighted by the hilarious Spamalot, and Joe Pasquale brought the house down as comedy legend Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em. There was a sweet treat from the Noughties in Kay Mellor’s Fat Friends the Musical, starring Sam Bailey and Jodie Prenger, and the ever-popular Dirty Dancing returned to give us the time of our lives (again).

Young audiences were kept entertained by two David Walliams creations, Gangsta Granny and Awful Auntie; Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler; and Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, as well as visits from the Horrible Histories team and Little Baby Bum. And the youngsters entertained us too, with a brilliant Summer Youth Project production of The Wizard of Oz. Speaking of local talent, DAODS have been busy this year, bringing two classic musicals - West Side Story and Top Hat - to the Orchard stage. And over the summer we enjoyed our usual helping of fantastic outdoor theatre at Central Park, with performances of Measure for Measure, Blithe Spirit and Pirates of Penzance. We’ve had classic mystery thrillers Gallowglass, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and just last month, The Case of the Frightened Lady, starring John Partridge. And for thrills of different kinds, there was Cirque Berserk - featuring the awesome motorcycle ‘Globe of Death’ - and a welcome return for Strictly’s Vincent and Flavia in their latest show, Tango Moderno. And that’s probably enough for one year! Have a great Christmas, enjoy the panto - and see you in 2019 for more brilliant shows…
