They are writing, directing and starring in Aladdin at the Lowther Pavilion, Lytham St. Anne’s, Lancashire – and are thrilled to be back for their third successive year at this beautiful venue. Keith, and his wife Fran, have lived in Dartford since 1968. Ben was born in the old West Hill Hospital, attended St Albans Road Primary, York Road Junior and Dartford Boys Grammar School before going on to Leeds University to study for an Honours Degree in Classics. SURVIVING WINTER

BY KENT COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

The cold winter months are an extremely dangerous time for older people, especially those who live alone. The Kent Community Foundation Surviving Winter Campaign aims to tackle social isolation and make winter less lonely for older people, as well as helping them stay well, healthy and independent. As autumn draws to a close and the evenings get longer and colder, older people are particularly vulnerable, as cold weather increases their risk of illnesses and social isolation.

already supports projects throughout Kent and Medway that address the everyday challenges faced by elderly people and we hope that donations to the Surviving Winter Campaign will allow us to support even more good causes.” “If just 10% of everyone, in receipt of the Winter Fuel Payment, in Kent and Medway were to donate £100 to the Surviving Winter Campaign, we would have a Fund of more than £3 million to help vulnerable elderly people in the county. Therefore, we are asking those who receive the payment, but don’t rely on it, to donate it to others. But you don’t have to be over 65 to give to this campaign, anyone who wants to give, even a small amount, will be making a significant difference to vulnerable, elderly people in the county.”

Projections indicate that there will be a far greater percentage of people living alone in Kent and Medway in later life than there has ever been in the past, and it is particularly important for people living alone to be involved in the local community. There is plenty of evidence to show that social isolation leads to poor mental health, Josephine McCartney continues: “Loneliness is often physical deterioration and generally a poorer quality of accompanied by depression, and cold wet weather, and life and prognosis for the future. shorter days can make it more difficult for older people to leave the house, particularly those with mobility issues. Josephine McCartney, Chief Executive, Kent Community This can mean that people opt to stay indoors, all alone, Foundation comments: “We want to make winter less day after day, and the longer they are isolated, the harder lonely for older people as well as helping them stay well, it becomes to leave.” healthy and independent. These projects have received funding from Kent Community Foundation; Ashford Volunteer Centre Since 2016 Kent Community Foundation has awarded grants of £18,500 to Ashford Volunteer Centre. Its mission is to have a society where everyone who wants to volunteer can do so in order to create a stronger community. For many isolated people in the Borough the charity is a lifeline and keeps them in touch with their local community and other people through services including a community car and befriending. www.ashfordvc.org.uk Involve Kent Over the last ten years Involve Kent has received grants totalling £75,000 from Kent Community Foundation

STORIES THAT INSPIRE - PURPOSE DRIVES SPEED by Dr. Sheun Oke

I got off at the Dartford Station, and strolled out towards the exit. First thought... Call my husband to pick me from the station. Then another; ''Let me check when the next bus would be here' Whilst doing this, I was making my way to the staircases that leads to the bridge/bus bay. Then I checked my wrist watch. 2mins and the next bus would be arriving.

What a way to end the year! Picking up your favourite Dartford Living! I know you are preparing for Christmas, just like I am. The gifts, the excitement in the air and yes, a bit of mixed feelings too as the year ends. Ok, maybe you have evaluated the last 11 months and realized you never did achieve all your goals and dreams. And you are pushing to tick lots of things off your ‘to-do-list’ (if you have got one). I would say... Go for it! I am confident you will finish strong and that 2020 is going to be even more fabulous. Why? You can count on me to share inspirational tips through everyday stories/ encounters, to help you become a better version of yourself. So, grab your cup of coffee/tea and let’s get into it… ‘’A few weeks ago, I was coming back from an important meeting held in Central London. 14

If you were walking towards me, you would have seen a lady in blue waterproof coat, with her hood pulled over her head, her carton-colour skirt 'peeping out from under the coat', wearing a high-heeled Stilettos boot, suddenly increasing her pace and making a dash for the stairs and 'legging it'. You would be wondering... 'What happened to her'? Oh! She suddenly found a purpose! She has a goal! She had a deadline! She has two minutes to make it to the bus stop and it means she gets to a warm, welcoming home faster. If she misses it, she would have to wait in the cold until her husband comes to find her or take a taxi (it was oversubscribed because of the rain). And YES, she met the bus right on time. The dash was worth it...the moral of the story. When you have a purpose, you quit wasting time! When you find your ‘Why’, suddenly your priorities change. Find a worthy ideal for your life, pursue it with passion. Start a business. Start a course. Learn a new skill. Start a charitable course. Raise funds for charities. It's time to quit 'coasting'... Let's go change the world, purposefully. The Ultimate SUPERCoach, Dr. Sheun Oke

DEPRESSION AND ME A REAL LIFE STORY

By Callum

My life; the bad, the good and the depression that changed me

absolutely amazing. It’s been so great I had to bring forward the preorder date by 2 weeks.

Hi to all reading this article. My name is Callum and I decided to write a book about my depression and what I have gone through. I was brought up in Bexley from birth twenty one years ago, living with my grandparents and then moving out with my mum to Sidcup. I have always loved growing up in this area, there were so many opportunities and a great place for young children to grow up. I started writing Depression and Me nearly a year ago and kept umming and ahhing, if I should publish it or not. I came to the conclusion that what I have endured not a lot of people will speak about because they are afraid or feel as they are a burden on their friends and family. I wanted to break the stigma of not talking about depression, so I decided to write about my past and what has happened to me. Within my book, I talk about everything from my school days right through to where I am now recovering from depression.

If you are interested in my story, or feel someone else could be interested, you can order at www.depressionandme.co.uk. Many thanks Callum

This shall be the first time I am going public to my friends and everyone else about what I have been through and I want to break my silence. The main thing I would like to get from my book is to start to spread awareness that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. There is so much support out there for yourself or someone you know battling mental health illnesses, support from charities, GPs, NHS, family and your peers. There will always be someone there for you and I hope my book portrays this. Since telling my friends and social media followers I was publishing my book, they have supported me so much. On my page ‘A Real Life Story’ (@realifestoryuk) on Facebook, I already have nearly 1,500 Likes, having reached over 400 likes in just my first 3 days and is continuingly growing day by day. The response and the support from the public has been www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

So what can you do? If this sounds like something you are experiencing, it’s important to recognise you’re not alone. In fact, many people struggle in the winter months, including myself and I make no secret of how much I dislike the winter, even with Christmas fast approaching. There are a number of things you can do to help yourself get through the winter and also manage symptoms of S.A.D. Lifestyle: Aim to get as much natural sunlight as possible. A walk in a green space, such as fields or natural woodland is a dose of nature’s medicine. Sunlight provides us with much needed vitamin D and naturally boosts our mood. Exercise regularly and manage stress as best as you can. Light therapy: Invest in a light box to simulate exposure to sunlight. (These can be purchased online but do check it is suitable for S.A.D). The light produced by the light box simulates the sunlight that’s missing during the darker winter months. It’s thought the light may improve S.A.D by encouraging your brain to reduce the production of melatonin (a hormone that makes you sleepy) and increase the production of serotonin (a hormone that affects your mood). Diet and nutrition: Consider speaking with a nutritionist to ensure you are getting the nutrients known to benefit mood and general wellness, such as omega-3 and omega-6. RECIPE -

GINGERBREAD HOUSE

by Debbie Dickinson

We have a family tradition in our house – I bake and construct our gingerbread house, and then daddy and the kids decorate it! It usually ends up with a lot of sweets on it!!! Then, usually on Boxing Day, it gets unceremoniously ripped apart and eaten!!! You will need: 125g unsalted butter 175g soft brown sugar 100g golden syrup 350g plain flour 1 egg ¾ tsp bicarbonate of soda 3tsp ground ginger 2tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground nutmeg What to do: Sift all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. You can adjust the spices to your liking. Gently heat the butter, sugar and golden syrup together in a saucepan until melted, stirring to combine. Add the egg to the dry ingredients and mix. Pour the melted sugar mix in and stir until the mix forms a smooth dough. Wrap the dough and pop in the refrigerator for at least

a couple of hours. Roll out the dough between 2 pieces of greaseproof paper to about 5mm and cut shapes required. You can find lots of gingerbread house templates if you search on the internet. Print them out and cut out the shapes. Lay the template on the dough and use a knife to cut round each shape. Use small star/ heart /circle cutters to add windows and details etc. Put the shapes onto a baking tray - on greaseproof paper – and pop back in the fridge for 30 mins. Bake in a preheated oven at 180° (160° Fan) for approx. 10 mins until light golden. Leave to cool on a wire rack before removing from the tray. Use Royal icing (this can be bought readymade) to glue your house together (and to a cake board). Do the walls first and leave to set overnight before adding the roof. Then use the royal icing to add sweets/chocolate and pop some in a piping bag to pipe decorative swirls etc around the house. Enjoy!

Our favourite 3 must experience items: - Take a trip on the famous bullet train reaching speeds of up to 270 kilometres per hour - Experience full Japanese culture by staying in a Ryokans (Traditional inn) - Witness the spectacular natural beauty of the cherry blossoms in Kyoto Top destinations: 1. Mount Fuji Long revered, the perfectly proportioned cone of Mount Fuji is the iconic image of Japan. Located just 100 km from Tokyo amongst the most beautiful panoramas of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, it is one of the country’s three holy mountains and at 3,776 meters high it is also the tallest. For those who fancy going up Fuji but not climbing you can head up to 5th station by road – it’s about halfway up and on a clear day it offers beautiful views. Do a day trip to Lake Ashi and explore the beautiful Hakone resort area with its famous hot springs.

source of both the island’s fame and its name. Formally named Itsukushima, the island is more popularly known as “Miyajima”, literally “shrine island” in Japanese, thanks to its star attraction. The shrine is known worldwide for its iconic “floating” torii gate. The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, a main hall and a noh theatre stage, which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea.

2. Kyoto Formerly the imperial capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years, Kyoto offers old-world charm, with over 1,000 Buddhist temples, colourful shrines, beautiful gardens, and a still-working geisha district. Don’t miss the Fushimi Inari shrine and a day trip to beautiful Nara visit two World Heritage Sites, Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Here you get to see wild deer up close, a rarity in Japan and elsewhere in the world. 3. Tokyo Visit Tokyo and experience the beauty of the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’. With skyscrapers and sushi, sumo and glorious Mount Fuji, Japan’s capital is unlike anywhere else on Earth. The combination of centuries-old culture and 21stCentury technology fuse to create a city that is utterly enthralling with something for everyone. Today, Tokyo offers a seemingly unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture and dining to its visitors. The city’s history can be appreciated in districts such as Asakusa and in many excellent museums, historic temples and gardens. Contrary to common perception, Tokyo also offers a number of attractive green spaces in the city center and within relatively short train rides at its outskirts.

5.Hiroshima Hiroshima is the principal city of the Chugoku Region and home to over a million inhabitants. When the first atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the city became known worldwide for this unenviable distinction. The destructive power of the bomb was tremendous and obliterated nearly everything within a two kilometre radius. After the war, great efforts were taken to rebuild the city. Predictions that the city would be uninhabitable proved false. Destroyed monuments of Hiroshima’s historical heritage, like Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden, were reconstructed. In the centre of the city a large park was built and given a name that would reflect the aspirations of the re-born city: Peace Memorial Park. Explore this fascinating country with our fantastic tailor-made tours. Come and see us in Dartford town centre to pick up a brochure, let’s have a coffee and talk all things Japan. From all of us here at Harden Holidays, we send you our warm wishes for this festive period. Merry Christmas

BELT-UP! DON’T LET YOUR CAR GET CAUGHT WITH ITS TROUSERS DOWN By Orchard Garage long time whereas others have a much shorter lifespan. If you have your car serviced with us, we will tell you when it’s due. A failed timing belt can mean a catastrophe for your car.

Your car’s timing belt, sometimes called a cam belt, tells the valves in the engine when to open and close. It keeps everything moving in exactly the right order and at the right time. And, just like the belt that holds your trousers up – if it snaps or comes apart, you’re exposing yourself to a whole load of trouble. Despite doing a vital job, a timing belt is basically a metal or rubber band with grooves in it. So, it’s a cheap part, sometimes costing as little as £30. The problem is that they’re often buried deep in the workings of the engine, making them difficult to get to, so replacing them involves some labour costs. They don’t last forever though – every make and model of car has it’s own expiry date for the timing belt – we advise knowing when yours is due. If the car’s still ticking over, it can be tempting to ignore the manufacturer’s guidelines – nobody likes having to use their hard-earned cash on repairs that might seem unnecessary – but be aware of what can happen when it begins to fall apart. Always replace it when it’s due – don’t wait for it to break down! Give us a call and we’ll look it up for your car – each make and model is different and some last for a 32

If the belt breaks, the pistons and valves will start to crash into and grind against each other, which bends and dents these more costly parts. Bits of metal can fly off completely and damage the cylinder head and have been known to work their way into turbos, causing further damage. A broken timing belt can mean a completely broken car, and possibly a broken bank balance too! Snap! Don’t ignore the engine management sign – it does come on for a reason! However, with the timing belt, you may not get much warning. Most of the time they just fray, then very quickly snap, leaving you with a car that just won’t move. Unfortunately, it’s not one of those jobs where we can just ‘check under the bonnet’ for you – because it’s so well buried in the mechanics that it takes time. The actual timing belt is a cheap piece of kit but it’s the labour to change them that bumps the bill up when they go wrong. At Orchard Garage in Dartford, our mechanics have loads of experience with timing belts. Yes, you might find that yours need replacing, and that’s a pain, but it’s a lot better than risking your beloved motor becoming a complete write-off if it does snap and causes problems elsewhere in your car. DARTFORD THEN AND NOW EAST HILL DARTFORD BY JAMES CARNEY - LOCAL RESIDENT

As an Architect I am interested in the local context of our towns, villages and cities and how these places have developed over time. Having come across some wonderful old postcards and images of our local towns and parishes on a Facebook page I thought it would be really interesting to take a photograph from exactly the same viewpoint but from our current time in history in relation to the original images from around the early 1900s. The original postcards and images are courtesy of Brian Porter.

FITNESS

IT’S NOT TOO EARLY TO START GETTING FITTER AND HEALTHIER!

By Mark Broadbent

Most people at this point, if they’re not already following some kind of diet and exercise plan, won’t even consider starting a new regime until January. Some that are already following one may even be falling off the wagon with a view to re-start it again in the new year too!

The point is, there will be many excuses available to you over December as to why you “can’t” start yet, but none of them are good enough to sacrifice your health and happiness for. You can still enjoy yourself, and a good plan will allow for some flexibility in your diet and training plan. So sit yourself Whilst it’s good to have targets and prepare, putting it off down and have a think about your goals, and what you need until what you think will be the “right” time, or an “easier” to do to achieve them. Write yourself a plan of how you can time to start is bad news. fit that into your extremely busy schedule (it may cut into some valuable Christmas TV time), and stick to that plan. I’ll let you in on a secret – it’s NEVER a good time! Something will always get in the way. There’s always an event coming up If you need help with your training and/or nutrition, visit www. that will throw you off. If you’re waiting for the perfect time TredegarPT.com for more information on Personal Training, to start – there isn’t one. Sorry. It’ll be a long wait, and in the Online Coaching and Nutrition Coaching. meantime, you’ll be getting bigger and bigger and less and less inclined to do something about it. Or give Dartford Bootcamps a go! www.DartfordBootcamps.com Yes, December is generally regarded as party season, and you’ll probably have more sweets in the house, more nights And follow us on Facebook and Twitter for extra tips, advice out, more parties, work do’s and social activities, BUT that’s and motivation. no excuse. Mark Broadbent If you’re serious about losing weight, getting fit, improving your health, having more energy, being less stressed, feeling Master Personal Trainer & Instructor at Dartford Bootcamps better etc etc… then you need to stop putting it off and do www.DartfordBootcamps.com something about it NOW. MarkOneFitness.blogspot.co.uk Yes, it may make sense to wait for the January offers in the gyms, but at the same time, if you value your health and really want this, is saving a few quid from a joining fee really a big deal? If you don’t value your health enough to pay the joining fee, I doubt you’re committed enough to make it work anyway. That being said, if you do want to wait for the gym offers, it doesn’t mean you can’t start doing something now. You can start exercising more in other ways – walk more, increase your daily step count, do some home workouts, go to some classes - I’d recommend Dartford Bootcamps – find something you can do that doesn’t require the gym just yet. On top of that, work on your diet. Good nutrition is half the battle and if you can get control of that along with some level of increased activity, you’ll have started seeing results before January already – then you’ll be even more motivated to train and may actually use the gym you just signed up to! 42

He loves tennis balls and these can be used to introduce him to new people, build a bond and distract him from other dogs when he is out and about. Larry can be aloof at times and unsure of new people, but once he gets to know you he enjoys calm affection and spending time relaxing with his favourite people. Larry can forget his manners when meeting new dogs so can be a bit intense which may be a bit too much for other dogs, so new owners will need to manage this carefully, reading his body language and knowing when to move him along. Larry is looking for a rural home with access to quiet walking areas. His training will require some patience and owners should be committed and consistent to achieve positive results. Please visit battersea.org.uk to find out more.

Lovely Heid is a handsome cat with lots of love to give. Although sometimes a bit wary, Heid battles through his nerves and likes to show his affectionate and friendly side – usually with a head bump. He loves a chin tickle and will purr and dribble to show his appreciation. Heid would like a garden to explore once he is fully settled into his new home. Please visit battersea.org.uk to find out more.

THEATRE REVIEW

BY LIZ DYER

With Christmas just around the corner, are you wondering what to buy your friends and family this year? Well, look no further - because our brilliant local theatre the Orchard has plenty of great options to keep everyone entertained for the foreseeable future. But before we get into a sneak preview of 2020’s highlights, a reminder that panto season is almost upon us! This year’s show, which opens on 14th December and runs until 5th January, stars Eastenders legend Steve McFadden as Captain Hook alongside comedian Andy Ford as Mr Smee. Tickets have been selling fast but some are still available, so don’t miss what promises to be a magical festive treat. So, what’s coming up in the new year? The simple answer is: a lot. Following hot on the heels of Peter Pan is the first big show of 2020, and it’s a good one. Based on the hit movie starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, The Bodyguard (8th-18th January) sees X Factor, Strictly and West End star Alexandra Burke reprise her critically acclaimed role as Rachel Marron. And if you know a fan of thrillers, why not surprise them with a ticket for Dial M for Murder (27th January-1st February), starring Tom Chambers as a jaded ex-tennis pro intent on getting away with the perfect crime? Made famous by the 1950 Alfred Hitchcock movie, this play is sure to keep us all on the edge of our seats.

Fast forward a couple of months, and award-winning illusionist Derren Brown will be returning to Dartford in March with his first live show in five years, Showman (26th March-4th April). And I’d love to tell you more about that, but the content of the show is top secret - so you may just have to go and see it to find out what happens! Or for something a bit more upbeat, why not grab your tickets for On Your Feet (6th-11th), the exhilarating true story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, featuring some of their biggest hits and a stellar cast. Following its recent acclaimed West End run, prepare to get on your feet - because apparently the rhythm really is going to get you… Other highlights coming up in early 2020 include the hilarious family musical Shrek (29th April-2nd May), Thriller Live (4th-9th May), celebrating the hit music of Michael Jackson, classic thriller An Inspector Calls (12th-16th May) and Friendsical (1st-6th June), a parody musical all about everyone’s favourite sitcom, Friends. Could we BE any more excited?! And that’s not all, of course - there’s plenty of music, comedy, dance and loads of other fantastic entertainment to look forward to over the next few months. Check out the Orchard website for more details, and get booking those tickets!

CAR NEWS DECEMBER 2019

By Dhiren Ganesh

In this month’s article we look at an upgrade and a new 2020 Audi RS Q8 sports SUV – this is the full-fat RS version from leading manufacturers and a new luxury SUV. performance version of Audi Q8 SUV. This versiion uses the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol engine and the other Audi RS versions developing 592bhp. The RS Q8’s engine is clever, too, shutting down half of its eight cylinders when they’re not needed to save fuel. Meanwhile, a mild hybrid system recoups some of the energy that would normally be lost when slowing down and allows the car to coast for up to 40 seconds at a time with the engine off. It relies on a bodykit, rear diffuser, twin oval exhausts and massive 22in wheels to help it stand out. And there are a range of options to let you personalise your car’s appearance, including 23in wheels and black and carbonfibre styling packs. It will be on sale during Spring 2020 and prices are expetced to start from £95,000.

2020 Toyota Yaris – All-new Toyota Yaris gets hybrid power and improved infotainment tech, yet remains one of the most compact small cars out there. With a more aggressive and prominent front grille and bumper, chrome detailing and slim LED headlights, the new Yaris is more sporty. It will be stiffer, lighter and shorter than before without reducing interior space. There will be two engines at launch; 1.5 hybrid and a 1.5 petrol engine with the hybrid option offering 111hbp (compared to current 98bhp). The hybrid offers 80mpg , an improvement of roughly 20%. Inside, there’s a standard 8.0in infotainment touchscreen running an updated version of Toyota’s current software and a wireless charging pad for your mobile phone, plus multiple USB connections. Prices are expected to be 2020 Aston Martin DBX – this is the first SUV in the around £15,000 when it comes on sale in Summer 2020. British brand’s 106-year history. An entrant into the booming prestige SUV market, the DBX promises the performance and luxury you’d expect from the brand, along with space and practicality that you wouldn’t. Plus, it’s said to offer genuine off-road ability. The designers have managed to incorporate Aston Martin’s styling cues in a way that looks natural – something some rivals have struggled with when producing their first SUVs. The twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine available at launch are powered by produces a healthy 542bhp. Both a V12 version and a plug-in hybrid are expected to follow. Aston Martin claims more leg and head room and a bigger boot than its rivals. A 10.25in infotainment screen incorporating Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring is standard, as are customisable digital instruments, a 360-degree parking camera, ambient lighting in 64 colours and a panoramic glass roof. Prices are expected to start around £158,000 when it comes on sale in Spring 2020. www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk
