DARTFORD MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE I would like to wish all Dartford residents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Having been your Mayor since May it has been a great privilege to meet many of you at various events and I look forward to meeting many more of you in the months to come. It is always a pleasure to open new businesses in the area, visit our great schools, attend events at the ATC, Sea Cadets, Scouts and many other organisations and charities. Thank you to those of you who have been able to support me in my charitable fund-raising endeavours for Healthy Living, Home Start, The Lantern Community Appeal and the Dartford Lions. They all do such great work in our community, as do the numerous other charities in the borough. I would like to thank all those who give up their time freely to help others. Dartford is a great place to live and bring up families. We are a very diverse society and learning about the different cultures within our community is very interesting. I am very keen to meet with people who come from different cultures and lifestyles to myself.

Many of you will be aware that the Orchard Theatre has been forced to close temporarily for reasons of safety following the discovery of the dreaded RAAC. The good news is that a temporary ‘pop-up theatre’ is being erected on the site of the old Co-Op department store. This means ‘The Shows Will Go On’ commencing with the ever popular pantomime. A big thank you to Dartford Borough Council for making this happen. Thank you also to Vijay and Dave for producing the Dartford Living Magazine each month as it contains so much information on past and future events in and around Dartford. SHELL SEEKERS AND WOODLAND FOLK: WALK THROUGH HISTORY IN BEAN By Clair Humphries

As well as mushrooms, the Country Park was once home to a vast collection of shells – hence the name ‘Shellbank’ popping up on road signs in the village. John Latham – a Dartford local who ‘discovered’ the famed Dartford Warbler bird in Bexley – was tasked with identifying the fossilised shells which amassed in one section of the ancient woodland. However, the most financially valuable natural resource in Bean has been clay, with a thriving cement industry dominating the area throughout the 20th century. Did You Know? 4 million tonnes of clay was excavated in the woods between 1935-1964? In 1825, James Frost patented ‘British cement’ and went on to open his cement works in Swanscombe, mixing clay with the chalk of the Thames Estuary. Bean’s clay pits were conveniently nearby and this laid the foundation for its site at the centre of Blue Circle’s cement depot – later taken over

by French company Lafarge. Even casual observers will have noticed the legacy of this industry when walking through the Country Park, with its trenches still a testament to the excavations. Opened in 1991, Beacon Country Park remains an oasis just outside Bluewater (and the ideal place for a walk after Christmas, to burn those mince pies off!) More than that, it is a reminder of this little village’s colourful past – from its modern day beacon to shell banks and excavated clay pits. Maybe it’s time to pay Bean a visit over the holidays and walk through some of its history – just give those Red Agarics, a wide berth, won’t you? It also has an entirely redesigned front end, with a new grille, bumper and headlights featuring Peugeot’s three-claw design. Inside, there’s an all-new dashboard that houses a new 10in central touchscreen with TomTom navigation, the latest “OK Peugeot” voice control, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GROWING OLD, STAYING YOUNG Passions grow with you as you age, don’t they? I’m not talking about that person you secretly fancied at school. Such worship is usual and a part of growing up. I mean those overwhelming emotions which sweep you up and take you along for the ride. When a hobby or pastime grows and takes over your waking hours. Whether it is collecting records, jewellery or music for example, or restoring old cars or furniture. I love music: I spent far too many years as a screaming fan girl at rock concerts, when my heroes were still young. I still listen to them today but it is different now.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS Forget the stress choosing gifts for loved ones this Christmas, my main concern is the amount of choice I face when buying mince pies! So many flavours and combinations – I am overwhelmed by the ingenuity of their creators. In the interests of research, I’ve spent time browsing to see what’s on offer. From Lidl to Fortnum and Mason I’m bombarded with ‘traditional’ mince pies, through to those paired with alcohol, for example brown butter and rum or a sour cherry, Armagnac and prune version. I could try a black forest or a cherry bakewell flavour, a clementine and pistachio version as well as chocolate or meringue varieties. Some offer alternative pastry cases - tahini or orange and almond for example. I can buy them as mini pies, cakes, slices, tarts, traditional baked or deep fried. I’ve come across a Mince pie flavoured cheesecake, mince pie toasties and a mince pie panettone. However, buying them is my only option, as I ruin even ready-made pastry, and would rather not inflict my culinary efforts on friends and family. Yet, which flavour to choose?

Some of those I worshipped are still performing, while others have retired to grow old disgracefully. There’s a fuller appreciation of the music now as opposed to the more visceral reaction to a bare-chested vision of Robert Plant or the sullen presence of Ritchie Blackmore. Of course, hearing a much-loved guitar riff or some lyrics still transport me back in time, but it is a less frenetic reaction – mainly due to arthritic joints rather than my inability to play air guitar! It is the same with books. I spend hours trawling through charity shops, for vintage detective fiction (definitely a passion) or my favourite authors. The delight at finding a battered copy of a ‘Paul Temple’ novel, or an early PD James can make my day. Televised series of ‘Shetland’ and ‘Vera’ opened the door to the books of Ann Cleeves, while a chance read through of an Edward Marston at the library opened up the world of the ‘Home Front Detective’ and his ‘Railway Detective’ series. A book and a cup of tea is a great way to while away a couple of hours. I’ve been so successful in my searches of late, I’ve had to cap my spending since I’ve run out of space to store them.

Perhaps I should check out the local island bakers. They offer a very nice Isle of Wight doughnut, which isn’t remotely doughnut like and tastes delicious. I wonder what their take on a mince pie would be.

A latecomer to my list of passions are tattoos. I was warned about getting a tattoo – a gift to myself on having attained my seventh decade. ‘You won’t stop at one’ said Tyler, as he delicately etched three hearts into my wrist. I left the shop certain that would be the one and only. Two I’d rather err on the side of caution so will further trips proved him right. Good company is always welcome, and it shows you want to spend time with them too! Giving them an event or trip to look forward to (in say February) can really help lift the winter blues. And the fun doesn’t stop with the trip itself – they create great memories that can be recounted to others or relived in quiet moments. Yum Yum. Everyone loves a varied and exciting food parcel! Customised hampers from a deli, or perhaps a homemade cake really show you’ve thought about your loved one. If they don’t have a sweet tooth, try a selection of their favourite teas, or perhaps some foods that will bring back memories, for example from where they used to live or visit. …. Of course, with foods we do need to give a thought to any changing preferences or allergies they may now be managing. Clothing. Many senior folk really feel the cold, and may be worried about energy costs, so a new and jolly piece of clothing, that makes them feel snug, will be most welcome. How about warm socks, fingerless mitts, soft scarfs, slippers (new ones may prevent a fall), fleece pyjamas, or new dressing gowns…. Music. Music is the language of the soul! It can lift moods and bring back many happy memories. We can of course browse and buy online for their favourite pieces or artist. Do think about the equipment your loved one is familiar with… MP3 or CD or Tapes even! Don’t forget to buy some headphones so the neighbours aren’t disturbed . Audio Books or Video. Great for those cold winter evenings and ideal for someone who now finds it hard to get out…… There are loads to choose from – different eras, box-set series, life histories, explorer’s tales, political memoirs, old comedies (e.g. Flanders & Swan or The Goons), and of course romance or general fiction. Videos are also welcome – try and find out their favourite 34

or meaningful film or a perhaps seek a box set from the distance past that they’ll enjoy. Hobby gifts. Crafts and other hobbies really help with mental stimulation, dexterity and of course mood. Everyone loves to show off their latest creation….. So why not seek a painting or sewing set, or perhaps an adult colouring book (therapeutic & fun), or weaving set, or puzzle set. Pamper gifts. Soaps, perfumes, manicure, massage…. Perhaps subscription to a weekly or monthly magazine – they’ll feel pampered each time it arrives! Practical gifts. Smoke alarms, torches, hot water bottles, new electric blanket, kettle or iron (this will help with home safety too – it’s amazingly easy for a worn out item to be overlooked), or perhaps an easy to use radio, with a large day & date display….. How about something for outside?.... Boot removers, new walking stick, litter-picker-handle (which is great around the house too), and for someone who likes to walk how about a florescent jacket, and perhaps a GPS tracker if they wander too far. Finally, why not ‘Be a Santa’ this Christmas by delivering a present to an elderly neighbour on Christmas Eve, and label it from Santa….. or even better, invite them to your home for Christmas Day – that‘s the best gift for a live-alone person! You will need: Ready made Puff Pastry Mincemeat – there are some deliciously flavoured varieties in the shops this year (or make your own) Apple Ground Cinnamon Brown Sugar 44

To assemble: With the shorter side of the pastry facing you, roll up tightly pressing at the end to seal the roll. Using a sharp knife, cut into 1cm slices and lay these down on a lined baking tray. Bake at 180° for 15-20 minutes until a light golden brown. As always I love a recipe that can be adapted to your family’s likes – what would you put in yours? My son has suggested Turkey, Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce for a Savoury Festive Treat! My daughter likes the idea of one with Raspberries, Blueberries and Custard. Enjoy! xxx
