A YEAR OF FREE LOVE A Dartford resident with a lifelong passion for horse racing has not only realised his dream of owning a racehorse, but also written a book about the experience. Tony Linnett’s A Year of Free Love is a thrilling tale which chronicles an eventful twelve-month period from the sales ring to the racecourse. The author set up a partnership with four long-standing friends who hatched a plan to buy an unraced yearling filly at the Newmarket sales in October 2017. Their subsequent 10,000 guineas purchase was named Free Love and during the 2018 season she raced eleven times finally reaching the winner’s enclosure at the ninth attempt at Catterick in September. ‘It’s been a real roller-coaster ride,’ observed Tony. ‘We were running out of money fast. We went right to our limit when we bought Free Love and had she not won at Catterick she was heading back to the sales at Newmarket a month later. Winning the race was one of the
Useful
most exhilarating moments of my life and it meant that we could keep the partnership going for a bit longer.’ Free Love has kept up the good work in 2019 winning two more races which has enabled her enthusiastic owners to carry on with their lifelong dream. ‘We’re just five ordinary racing fans who saved up for this project realising that if our little filly didn’t win a race or two, we wouldn’t be able to afford to keep going,’ explained Tony. ‘We’ve been very lucky.’ The author has lived in Dartford with his wife, Jennie, for more than 30 years. Their three children have all gone to local schools and when Tony changed career and decided to teach, his first post was at Oakfield Junior School. His final job was Head Teacher of Hurst Primary School in Bexley. When he retired in 2017, he was able to devote his time to a racehorse ownership project which subsequently led to his first stab at writing a book. A Year of Free Love is available through Amazon and the Racing Post online shop.

GARDENING WITH THE WORLD GARDEN by Tom Hart Dyke, curator of The World Garden
July is a joyous month with your garden looking its best with a profusion of summer colour, allowing you a moment to admire all your hard work of the spring before you continue maintaining your favourite annuals, perennials and shrubs. As the heat of the summer arrives keeping everything looking its best can be challenging, so don’t forget two of your most important secret weapons are your secateurs and watering can, let the gardening commence!
This month sees the peak of many blooms, gorgeous summer bedding, delightful Dahlias, colourful Penstemons and the sweet scent of roses. To keep everything looking gorgeous in your garden it is essential you water beds well, ideally a soaking once or twice a week either very early or late evening to ensure the sun’s rays don’t evaporate or scorch your plant beauties. We often wait until July to plant out our summer bedding; Marigolds, Nasturtiums and Cosmos, storing them in our greenhouses just before planting to keep the humidity high and help prevent red spider mite who love the dry climate!
Secateurs at the ready, deadheading is your next garden task and removing spent flowers means you will encourage new growth and extend the flowering period of your beds. Here in the garden we grow a selection of fruit and vegetables, July is the perfect time to pinch out the side shoots on your tomatoes, so your plants will grow up the cane and avoid bushing out! Remember if you are a lover of Paeonies, they often need a good old bamboo staking too, otherwise they’ll bend or break and flop everywhere! Keeping the garden tidy is a constant job and a great opportunity to remove weeds, tackle pests and diseases and stake any of your plants to ensure your flowerbeds continue to look stunning to welcome visitors for the
rest of the summer season and beyond. Don’t forget to Save the date for our new Quilt & Craft Festival this month 19th - 21st, as we welcome The Quilters Guild to celebrate the craftsmanship from across Kent, Sussex and Surrey. Visitors will enjoy live demonstrations, over 30 stalls including face painting for the children and a host of stunning quilt and patchwork exhibits created by the talented members. Visit www.lullingstonecastle. co.uk for more details. Images: Alan Graham
Remember new planting requires extra attention to ensure survival and particularly in very warm weather check the soil moisture by sight and touch for extra peace of mind. Here in The World Garden we put down heavy mulch at the start of the gardening season to prepare the beds, so don’t forget to top it up this month to help retain moisture and give it a good water! July is also the perfect time to feed your plants with an all-purpose plant food, it can be applied during watering and is ideal to encourage further growth. 18

Hi Dartford Living Readers,
water (hence our swollen feet most of the time) but drinking Summertime is here! Yet, I think anyone who is pregnant more water and staying hydrated at this time of year will say that pregnancy and summer can prevent this. I carry a BPA just don’t mix! free water bottle with me all the time now. From swollen feet to lack of sleep to just feeling generally uncomfortable most of the time, I think I can safely say 5) Cold flannel on head and that I’m not reaching for the sun bed wanting to top up feet - Apparently if your head my tan this year. and feet are cool, the rest of your body will cool down too. I try and do this in the evenings when I’ve got my feet up In fact, I do feel about ten times bigger than what I was as it is hard to do during the day when running around when I was pregnant with my first and although they say after a 3 year old! The cold also helps with swollen feet. I you’re supposed to be bigger second time round, I’m tend to find dipping my feet in Little Man’s paddling pool definitely waddling...still with another 2 months to go! is also a great help during the day too. I’ve now even noticed I’m getting the ‘sympathy’ look 6) Ice cream and ice lollies are my best friends! Slush from either parents or grandparents who were perhaps Puppies have also been one of my ultimate cravings this once in the same position as me at this time of year! time round but any kind of cold food or drink to keep me hydrated and cool are absolute winners. The heat does make life extremely uncomfortable when carrying a mini human inside your belly! And not wanting And of course, both me and Little Man won’t be forgetting to sound like a ‘Summer Scrooge’ but I’m happiest when to wear suncream when sitting out in the sun - even if it’s raining! we’re in the shade. I just wish there was a way to apply suncream to a 3 year old without him hating every second! However, if we are set for a hotter than hot summer this year, I know that I’ve got to stop doing the rain dance and If you have any further tips or advice you would like to just embrace it. So I thought I would share some tips share - please get in touch on socials @BipBopMum. to stay cool and if you’re pregnant like me or even just I’m all ears! extremely uncomfortable in the heat, hopefully this will get you through... So from bump and me, have a lovely time in the sunshine this summer and I look forward to giving you another 1) Pocket Fan - I now carry one everywhere I go! They’re pregnancy update soon! sold in most pound shops and I keep one not just in my handbag but also in my hospital bag too. Until next time! 2) Cooling Spray - This is brilliant and I highly recommend Charlotte x it. I got mine from Boots for just £3.99. It’s another great handbag must have. It’s not just great for me but good to cool my son down when he’s been running around outside too. 3) Loose clothing - My summer clothes just don’t fit me properly anymore and with only a few weeks to go, I’m not wasting money on more maternity wear. So I’ve resorted to long stretchy maxi dresses. I get mine online from either Boohoo or ASOS and many start at just £8 a dress! 4) Water, water, water - Us pregnant women love to retain www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

Youth clubs are non-existent and would probably be regarded as desperately old school by those they aim to cater for. Few teenagers want to volunteer or take part in formally organised activities. We have some amenities in the parks, including a skateboard area, but little else. How can our young people learn and experience different skills if there are no outlets for them? We need free or low-cost schemes for them. Why not a writing club, for those interested in fan fiction and YA books? Where can they go to make music or perform; learn to act or dance; be encouraged to grow a talent? While there are efforts to provide sporting facilities, these are mainly for football or swimming. Why not bring the more obscure sports to the fore - archery, horse riding or roller blading? Would the young benefit from experiencing a mindfulness session, or a pampering morning? RECIPE -
EASY PITTA BREADS
by Debbie Dickinson
Hopefully we’re going to have a wonderful summer with the chance for a lot of picnics – these pitta breads would be perfect to take along. You’ll need: 250g Strong white bread flour 4g salt 7g easy use yeast – you can buy this in any supermarket, and it comes in either a box or packs of 7g sachets. 150ml cold water 2tsp oil What to do: Put the flour into a large bowl and add the yeast at one side of the bowl and the salt on the other. (Salt slows down the fermentation of the yeast so we try to keep them apart for as long as we can!) Make a well in the middle of the flour and pour about half of the water in. Using one hand only, combine the flour into the water – in a circular movement gradually working from the middle outwards. As it’s needed, slowly pour more water into the middle until all the flour has just been combined. You should have a soft, not wet, dough. Tip onto a clean, slightly oiled surface and knead for approx. 5 minutes until the dough is soft and smooth.
Pop into a bowl (inside wiped with a little oil) and cover with a tea towel. Leave to rise for 2 hours until the dough doubles in size. Tip the dough back onto the surface, this time sprinkled with flour and fold into itself to knock out the air and the dough is smooth again. Preheat the oven to 200° Fan (220° conventional oven/ approx. gas mark 7) and put a baking tray in to heat up. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces and work on one at a time – keeping the others in the bowl covered with tea towel until required. Use a rolling pin to roll out to an oval, pitta bread, shape – about 4/5mm think. Take care to put them on the hot baking tray, a couple at a time, and bake for 5/6 minutes until they start to colour. Take out and let cool. Enjoy!

The Seychelles islands are located off the East coast of Africa, spread between 4- and 10-degrees South of the equator, placed outside the cyclone belt which sets them apart from other Indian Ocean Islands. ELLENOR WELCOMES HER ROYAL HIGHNESS, THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE’S MESSAGE OF SUPPORT TO MARK CHILDREN’S HOSPICE WEEK 2019
by Basia Wilson, ellenor
Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge has sent a message of support to celebrate and mark Children’s H o s p i ce We e k . Children’s Hospice Week (17-23 June) is organised by Together for Short Lives, the UK charity for seriously i l l c h i l d re n a n d families. Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge, as Royal Patron of EACH, has seen first-hand that children’s hospices provide vital support for seriously ill children, young people and families. In her personal message, The Duchess hopes that others will join her in thanking children’s hospices for the lifeline care they provide during Children’s Hospice Week. ellenor is one of the charities joining The Duchess to mark Children’s Hospice Week and is delighted that The Duchess has sent a special message of support, shining a light on children’s hospices and showing how they help children, young people and families to make the most of their precious time. The Duchess, as Royal Patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), has generously given her support to Children’s Hospice Week since 2013. The impact over many years has been transformational, helping to raise awareness of the needs of seriously ill children and families and to show why they need specialist support.
In an excerpt from the message, The Duchess says: “Children’s hospices provide vital sanctuaries for those experiencing the very toughest of times. They help families and carers build life long memories that are poignant, happy and often filled with laughter. They provide a lifeline to children and families for however long support is needed and I hope that others join me in thanking them as we shine a light on their work during Children’s Hospice Week.” Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge’s message of support for Children’s Hospice Week can be viewed here www.togetherforshortlives.org.uk/royalmessage and https://www.each.org.uk/childrens-hospice-week Welcoming The Duchess of Cambridge’s message of support, Andy Fletcher, CEO for Together for Short Lives, the charity behind Children’s Hospice Week said: “We are thrilled that Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge has sent a personal message of support for Children’s Hospice Week 2019, shining a light on the vital role hospices play in building life-long memories for children, young people and families. The Duchess’s words, and her support over many years, help to challenge perceptions about children’s hospices and to show they are happy and inspiring services that offer a lifeline to families through the very toughest of times.” Graham Butland, EACH CEO said: “We know and the families we’ve supported know just how much of a positive difference children’s hospices can make, providing truly memorable moments of fun and inspiration, but there’s still a clear gap in the knowledge of many others. We often hear from families how they expected our hospices to be sad and dark places. That’s simply not the case, as Her Royal Highness knows from her visits to us, and it’s fantastic to have her continued support in raising awareness. Children’s Hospice Week is always a really important time of year for us and all children’s hospices across the UK, and I hope people will once again join The Duchess in championing the role they have to play.”
Rebecca Scalzo, ellenor’s Head of Children’s Services says: “ellenor is thrilled that HRH The Duchess of Cambridge is helping to raise awareness of services offered by ellenor, and other hospices across the country, by marking Children’s Hospice Week 2019. We welcome her support in highlighting the important work we do, helping children, young people and their families to make the most of life. To find out more about our services please call 01474 320007 Many people do not understand the challenges faced by or check out https://ellenor.org/childrens-hospice-care families when a child has a life limiting or life threatening illness and we are delighted to have her support”. 28

BAV’S SPORTING COMMENT Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome suffered multiple fractures, including his neck, in a crash in France last month. He is expected to be out of action for at least six months. The crash happened during a practice ride before stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine in Roanne, France. In footage before the incident, a team-mate tells Froome “you don’t have to take risks, Chris” as he takes both hands off the handlebars to put on a jacket. But moments later, Froome took his hand off his handlebars again to blow his nose and was travelling at 54km/h when a gust of wind caught his front wheel, causing him to hit a wall. He was airlifted to Saint-Etienne Hospital, and recognises he is lucky to be alive.

FITNESS TACKLING PROBLEM AREAS
By Mark Broadbent
We all have certain areas on our bodies where we seem to store more bodyfat and find it harder to shift the weight; for women this is often around the hips and thighs, and for men this is usually around the stomach. Whilst this isn’t a rule, and you may be different, this is generally what we tend to see and it’s dictated, at least in part, by your hormones (hence why it’s slightly different for men and women).
just that it may take a bit longer, especially if the other factors we’re about to talk about aren’t addressed. So, what can you do about it? The first thing is to plug the leak. Stop fat being stored. This is simply a case of getting control over your diet and exercise regime so that you’re not consuming more calories than you’re burning. Find the balance between what you eat and drink, and how active you are (this does not just mean cut calories! Read my other articles for a better understanding of how to go about doing this). Once you have your routine in place and are burning more calories than you’re consuming (hopefully from healthy, nutritious foods), your hormonal profile should start to optimise itself and you’ll start to burn some bodyfat, but this will be from all over your body, not from any areas in particular. However, there are a couple of things that may prevent you from burning fat from those problem areas (other than hormones) and the types of exercise you choose will play a role in whether or not the bodyfat from those areas gets mobilised and used for fuel or not. Circulation plays a big part in this. If you mobilise fats (release them to be burned for fuel) from a problem area (your hips and thighs for example), these fats then need to make it into circulation to be burned. If they don’t get circulated, they’ll stay put and get laid back down as fat stores.
To do this you’ll need to make sure you’re not blocking The real question though is, can we target those areas for circulation, sitting down for example will not encourage fat loss (also known as “spot reduction”)? blood flow to your backside, hips and thighs – so sitting on a bike, rower or other machine isn’t likely to be beneficial if Unfortunately, the answer is complicated, and whilst we can’t, these are your problem areas. technically, spot reduce (i.e. do some stomach exercises to lose fat from your stomach), we can improve our chances Whilst exercising the area you’re trying to focus on doesn’t of burning fat from those areas. burn fat from that area, it does increase circulation in that area, which will help to make sure that fat from that area is Naturally you’ll tend to store fat in those areas as it’s a being burned along with from the rest of your body. protective mechanism built-in for our survival – protect the reproductive system/internal organs. What this means It’s quite common for people to have under-active muscles for you is that hormonally, you’re set up to store more fat in – the muscles of the backside (glutes) and lower abs being those areas, and they’ll be the most difficult areas to lose it some of the most common since most of us sit down for a from (because your body wants it there). large portion of the day – reducing blood flow and in effect “turning off” or de-activating those muscles. Ask a knowledgeable trainer for some activation exercises for these muscle groups and do these to “activate” the muscles before you start your exercises. Then choose exercises that will work those areas whilst encouraging circulation. Large, full body exercises are better than waving your legs around Jane Fonda style (though these could be useful as the activation exercises if they hit the target muscles…). Avoid anything sitting down and don’t use a bodybuilding type routine i.e. working one area/body part per workout. Aim to work your upper body (to get blood flow there), then your lower body (to shift the blood flow to your legs), then upper body, then lower body… keep pushing the blood to different areas to encourage circulation (sometimes referred to as PHA – Peripheral Heart Action training). This will also improve your fitness levels as your heart is constantly having to work to pump blood to different body parts to feed the working muscles.
order and change the exercises to ones that will encourage circulation to problem areas. Upper body/Lower body supersets will be better than 3 sets of chest, then 3 sets
of legs… etc. If you have problem areas that aren’t shifting and think your workouts need adjusting, show this article to your trainer and ask them to rewrite your workouts accordingly, or find someone who can help. If you’ve ever gone dizzy after a spin class, this is because you’ve pushed all of the blood to your legs and it stays there, so when you stand up/get off the bike, you go dizzy, the same as if you’ve been sitting down for a long time and stand up too quickly. So, while spin may be fun and have its place in some training protocols, it might not be the most effective use of your time if you’re trying to lose weight and have stubborn areas. Review your workouts and see if you can tweak the exercise
