COUNCILLOR PAUL CUTLER ELECTED AS THE WORSHIPFUL MAYOR OF DARTFORD FOR 2022/23. The new Mayor of Dartford, Councillor Paul Cutler, was elected at the Annual Council meeting on 11 May 2022. Councillor Cutler is married to Suzanne, the new Mayoress, and the couple have four children Charlotte, Emily, James and Annabelle, who all attended local schools. Councillor Cutler was first elected to Dartford Borough Council in 2012 and represents Stone Castle Ward. Members of Dartford Borough Council elect a new Mayor at a General Council meeting every 12 months. Councillor Cutler has lived in Stone for nearly 28 years but was originally from South East London, and was born in Greenwich. He spent the majority of his working career in corporate sales, working for Xerox UK, and he also lived in Manhattan, New York City, for a year in his early 20’s. Most recently he worked at The Leigh UTC at the Bridge development before retirement beckoned. The new Mayor enjoys cooking, eating, entertaining with friends and family and also loves gardening and an occasional pint at his local, the Lads of the Village. The family have a pet dog called Chubs who enjoys a daily walk around Stone. The Mayor’s Charity Appeal for 2022-23 will support three charities: Care for Veterans, Cancer Research UK and the Arrow Riding School.

THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE PORTRAIT COMPETITION BY Gareth Johnson MP This month marks the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen and it is great to see so many people from across Dartford and beyond celebrating this momentous occasion. Since September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II has been Britain’s longest reigning monarch, having served our nation and the Commonwealth tirelessly. She is clearly the most respected person in the world. It is remarkable she has served this country for such a long time in such an exemplary fashion and it makes her unique. She has links to more than 600 charities, military associations, professional and public bodies and for many years she has hosted countless garden parties, receptions, and awards to thank those people from around the country who have given their time to help others.

To commemorate the Platinum Jubilee, I have organised a competition for Dartford’s primary school children to draw a portrait of the Queen. These pictures are delightful and it is great to see so many children of all ages taking part. Two winners from each school are now part of a display at Bluewater. This special exhibition, which runs until June 10th, is being held in the Lower Rose Gallery. Her Majesty’s sense of duty in her role and her work ethic has been unflinching throughout my life and for the past 70 years. It is an honour for me to serve in Her Majesty’s Government and, in an ever-changing world, she has been a constant. 8

‘NAVIGATING IDENTITY’ ART EXHIBITION BY HABIB HAJALLIE Multi award winning, Dartford based, artist Habib Hajallie RBA will be exhibiting his first solo presentation, titled ‘Navigating Identity’ at The Mick Jagger Centre from June 1st-30th 2022. Funded by The Arts Council England, Habib Hajallie RBA will be exhibiting an exciting new body of work.
Biography Habib Hajallie is an elected member of The Royal Society of British Artists. He looks to empower often marginalised minorities through the exploration of identity within his ballpoint pen portraiture. Confronting socio-political issues within his drawings acts as a catalyst for a discourse regarding the perception of various demographics as being of lesser humanistic value. Specifically, with the disenfranchised often being undermined by mainstream media; somewhat paradoxically reflecting an archaic hierarchy of status, similar to colonial ideologies. Though born in Southeast London, Hajallie’s works are Informed by his Sierra Leonean and Lebanese heritage. He is conscious of representing figures that have historically been conspicuously omitted from traditional British portraiture. Calling upon anecdotal references to portray scenes that are occasionally quasisurrealist representations, the drawings look to confront lingering ethnocentrisms that are still embedded within modern western society.
The artist has exhibited extensively across the UK and US. He was recently commissioned by Facebook and Southwark Park Galleries; as well as being the winner of The Signature Art Prize 2020 and a two-time winner of The Society of Graphic Fine Art - Young Artist Award (2019 & 2021). Artist Statement Using antique texts and maps as the canvases for my works enables me to pragmatically recontextualise ephemera, creating a cohesion between the concepts informing the work and the aesthetic output. As I empower various figures; I simultaneously do so with the ground used, presenting them within new contexts. Placing myself or family members as the subjects of my portraits evokes a sense of immediacy, apropos to navigating the intersection of my western upbringing and familial West African culture.
At the core of my practice, I depict motifs that contradict largely accepted revisionist narratives apropos to West African Histories. My work investigates how identity can be constructed by historical oppression, with semblances of antiquated ideologies at the root of nuanced prejudices that I have personally experienced. Ultimately, my work looks to embolden individuals that feel as though they have been labelled as the ‘other’ in any manifestation.
I employ delicate mark making techniques with precise strokes of the everyday ballpoint pen. This process is influenced by sketches from the high renaissance. The enormously talented EDDIE COCHRAN is on the bill. Eddie died in Chippenham in 1960 on the last night of a legendary UK tour. From the moment the crew clapped us on board, we felt at home. The ship was stunningly beautiful but very approachable. It never felt like a stuffy, overly pretentious form of luxury, it was instead a very comfortable and relaxing level of luxury. This was a ship that welcomed you, made you feel at home, whilst also blowing you away with the stunning artwork, cutting-edge technology, and exquisite food and drink. There were a few key highlights that we especially enjoyed 1) Technology – The lighting, temperature and television in your cabin could all be controlled via the Celebrity Cruises app. This meant that dimming the lights at night and then opening 20

the curtains in the morning became a sensory experience. 2) Food & Beverage – Celebrity have always delivered amazing culinary experiences but the quality and range on this ship were in another league. We loved the drinks at the Martini & Sunset bars, the lobster and steak in the main dining rooms, and the sheer size and variety on offer in the buffet restaurant. 3) Entertainment – The theatre featured a 110foot curved 4K LED screen with sliding panels that allowed the cast to deliver two spectacular shows whilst we were on board. The technology again just adding to the performance and not overwhelming it. 4) Appearance and Atmosphere – Celebrity Beyond is undoubtedly a beautiful ship, and as you make your way around the vessel you are repeatedly put in front of superb artwork and beautifully designed spaces. However, all this stunning design does not detract from the wonderfully welcoming staff that just make it feel as though you have returned home and this was
where you belonged all along. I could keep on about other areas of the ship but there is only so much space I can take up here. LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS By Jane Stevenson
COFFEE, TAKEAWAYS, AND CATS Hi All It’s been an extremely busy few weeks at The Towers; Due to changing circumstances, I’ve had to do some ‘proper’ work for once, refuse all luncheon and coffee engagements, and generally retire from public life! However, being the lively social butterfly I am, I found the daily routine of sitting at the computer, reading a lot of legal stuff, looking up the bits I didn’t understand and trying to make head and tail of it all somewhat tiring. Other Half was also involved in this flurry of paperwork. After a few days of this full-on activity we were decidedly scratchy with each other, so decided to get out for a couple of hours for a relaxing cup of coffee and some cake.

During the lockdown, it appears the number of takeaways ordered locally increased greatly. During those long months, I saw many a delivery driver carrying mysterious bags of mouthwatering food all over the neighbourhood. The aromas alone were enough to make my mouth water. I have no problem with this – I enjoy an Indian or Chinese meal now and again coupled with bonus of not having to cook that night. Even though we are all trying to return a degree of normality, our use of food delivery companies has hasn’t abated. What I wasn’t prepared for was discovering the cats have also developed a takeaway habit!
Neither of us could face our usual Costa with its vibrant atmosphere and chat. We needed a quieter, less frantic place to recoup our energies so we elected to visit The Meeting Place, a coffee shop in our local library. I was interested in this addition to the usual services of the library: The Meeting Place is a community-based hub working with and supporting the local people. Groups, classes, and workshops can use it for events. I understand there is a lively Knit and It started with a rather sad looking spare rib, left Natter group there as well as a much-needed on the kitchen floor one morning. Then some 26

chicken with a distinctive Five Spice aroma. In quick succession they brought home some pitta bread, a side of pork crackling and some trout in silver foil! All items were discreetly left by the back door, either for snacking later, or as a gift to me. Since those early days, I’ve received a partially eaten muffin, a sausage, and some toast to add to the menu. Of course, now the days are longer and slightly warmer, we get ‘fresh food’ in the form of newts, mice, the occasional pigeon and even a squirrel. I keep my gang in at night, so I guess these are early morning sorties around the neighbourhood. I serve recommended, nutritious cat food twice a day which they invariably leave as like all kids, they are clearly going through their junk food phase! I just hope they enjoyed the muffin. SENIOR SNIPPETS By Christina Uppenkamp - Home Instead
Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford. Despite all the powerful new cleaning products available on the shelves today that use advanced chemical technology and sophisticated ingredients, many cleaning jobs can be just as effectively done using “old-fashioned cleaning remedies”. These are tried and tested methods that have been passed down from generation to generation and are just as effective today as they were before the invention of fancy and expensive cleaners and sprays. Removing limescale from kettles: There’s nothing like a good cup of tea. To keep your kettle clean and free from limescale, just boil the kettle and switch it off. Then, add two tablespoons of citric acid powder and leave to cool. Once it has cooled off, pour the solution down the sink and reboil the kettle twice with fresh water. This traditional fix not only dissolves the limescale, but also prolongs the life of the kettle.
Cleaning windows: White vinegar (a natural disinfectant and deodoriser) and newspaper will give you windows that sparkle and shine. Mix one part white vinegar with one part warm water in a spray bottle and spray on to your windows. Then, polish your windows using crumpled newspaper. Don’t use vinegar on frosted glass or leaded glass windows. The next time you need to do some household cleaning, don’t rush out to buy a host of harsh chemical cleaners. It is amazing what simple household items such as lemons, salt and bicarbonate of soda can do. Not only are they better for the environment but they are often better for your purse too! Cleaning a wooden chopping board: All you need is some coarse salt and a lemon. Simply sprinkle the board with coarse salt, scour the surface with half a cut lemon, squeezing to release the juice and leave it for five minutes. Then, scrape the residue off the board and rinse with a clean wet sponge. Natural carpet freshener: Here’s a simple solution to remove wet dog and stale smells from your carpet; sprinkle a light dusting of bicarbonate of soda onto the carpet before vacuuming to remove smells and freshen the room. Cleaning your washing machine: Rid your washing machine from mould and musty smells with a vinegar rinse once in a while. All you have to do is add a cup of white vinegar to the drum of the washing machine and do an empty wash on the hottest cycle. Do this every 2-3 months to keep things fresh and fragrant.

THE SECOND CHANCE IN LIFE By Dr Bhaskar Bora
Dr Bhaskar Bora was working as a Family Practitioner since 2009 managing five practices in and around Dartford. He is also the owner of Samsara Resturant and Bar in Sutton, London. Just when life seemed rosy and sun was shining, he sustained a severe spinal cord injury in July 2019 following an operation, which left him with paralysis of both legs, a non-functioning right hand and long stay in the hospital. Eventually leading to a forced medical retirement from his medical career and a wheelchair in place of a sports car. He had to undergo multiple operations but is now permanently disabled. Two months after his injury he was also diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid for which he needed further operations. With a family so young he could not afford to give up yet, so he had to re-learn walking (limited distance with crutches), writing, holding knife and fork and lots of other daily routines but most importantly had to retrain his mind to accept the new normal. However, these adverse life changing experiences made him into a person of faith, gratitude and inspiration. Poorer financially but richer in experiences of life he is now a voice for the disabled and has written the book ‘The Second Chance in Life’ as an honest reflection of his life experiences to motivate people that every adversity can still be turned into an opportunity. That it is important to be filled with gratitude and appreciation for all the things that we take for granted. I now have reduced power in my legs, sensory ataxia (a condition where you can’t feel where you are standing or stepping so causes loss of balance), loss of function of three fingers in my right dominant hand, severe and chronic neuropathic pain that feels like electric shocks passing through my body, reduced movement and pain in the neck and an inability to walk without an aid even for short distances. Writing those words, expressing my condition on the page, is still a surreal process. Did this really happen to me? Will I one day wake from this dreadful dream? Ah, if only. Somehow, I have to deal with my pain, my limitations, yet how much easier this is with a fine heart and a functioning brain. I will never give up. I am, once again, ready to take on the world. A sudden life change doesn’t have to mean the end. Gradually, what dawned on me was a new perspective, some sort of spiritual LSD that made me thankful for what I still had, rather than being unhappy about what I don’t. When storms come, an eagle flies higher in order to rise above the turbulence while a mouse hides in a corner. I had to become that eagle and soar higher, not be cornered and crushed in the storm of life.
Believing in myself was the only way. Maybe this was a lesson. Maybe this was a teaching to find a bigger purpose, achieve a bigger dream. This Spring, the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme is bringing you the Festival of the Landscape, an event-packed celebration of everything that the Darent Valley has to offer! From May to July 2022 everyone is invited to join in with a programme of events, workshops and activities across the Darent Valley.
From exploring Tudor and Roman finds with our Community Archaeologist, touring the ancient trees painted by Samuel Palmer, guided walks with Kent Wildlife Trust, wildlife activities for families and walk and draw workshops for adults to largescale outdoor puppetry performances at Otford and Dartford with 'Puppets with Guts' and much more - there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
Dartford residents might like to come along to the Great Big Platinum Jubilee Party, where they can meet Gnomus, a giant puppet, who will be putting on a show at Central Park on Sunday 29th May - and must be seen to be believed! At this event, young people aged 12+ and adults can also take part in free arts-based landscape workshops, enabling participants to discover their local landscape’s colour palette. Run by professional artists, they will guide you through how to ReFRAME your environment and create your very own Darent Valley picture frame. Workshops last approximately 1 hour. Families might like to join Dartford Arts Network’s drop-in Art & Nature activities in the park.

It is true that people are struggling to get appointments, frustrated about hanging on the phone only to find all appointments have gone. We are just as frustrated as you are that we are unable to meet the demand, but we are working as hard as we can with the resources we have.
Verrucas and warts These common harmless lumps on skin are caused through a virus. They will usually go away on their own, but this can take months or even years. You don’t need to treat them, but treatment may help them clear up quicker. There is often no treatment we can offer in GP practices. Most practices do not have liquid nitrogen, which can be used to freeze them. Instead, your pharmacist can advise on treatments that you can buy. Always speak to a GP if you have a lesion on your skin that you are worried about and you are not sure what it is.

Did you ever imagine back then that it would make such a big impact? “I didn’t even know enough to dream beyond the final construction of the piece. Writing a musical is by far the hardest thing I have ever done. It’s so complicated, with so many revisions, and it’s easy to lose sight of the finish line. So I was just so happy and proud that we got off the runway, everything else was a bonus.” Could you tell us about the main character, Jenna? “Jenna’s an extraordinary pie-maker who lives in a small town in southern Indiana. She’s in an abusive marriage and gets pregnant, but doesn’t want the baby. Over the course of the show we see her encounter an unlikely new relationship, and also develop her friendships within the diner and the community. She goes on a soul-searching journey and learns to love herself. What to do: Preheat the oven to 160°C (Fan) Cut the Butter into tiny cubes and place in a large bowl with the Plain Flour. Rub together – using just your fingertips – until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the Caster Sugar, Brown Sugar, Ground Ginger and Bicarbonate of Soda and stir until combined. Pour in the Golden Syrup and the Egg. Mix until everything comes together in a dough.
GINGERNUT BISCUITS By Debbie Dickinson Surprisingly easy to make and delicious – add as much Ground Ginger as you dare! What you need: 50g Unsalted Butter – straight from the fridge 275g Plain Flour 1-2 tsp Ground Ginger 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda 115g Caster Sugar 115g Light Brown Sugar 2 tbsp Golden Syrup 1 Large Egg For the Filling (optional) 1-2 stalks of Rhubarb 50g Unsalted Butter 50g Icing Sugar
Pinch small amounts from the dough and roll into a ‘cherry tomato’ sized ball. Place onto baking paper on a baking sheet. Using a fork, flatten the balls slightly. Leave space between each biscuit as they will spread a bit. Bake in the oven for 12-13 minutes until they start to crisp on top. Leave to cool on the tray. For the filling. (Completely optional as the biscuits are delicious on their own!) Chop the Rhubarb into slices. Place in a saucepan with a little water and bring to a boil. Watching all the time so it doesn’t burn. Reduce the heat to a very gentle simmer and heat until the Rhubarb has broken down and is completely cooked. If you wish, you could add a little sugar to sweeten the mix! Cream the Butter and Icing Sugar together until pale and creamy. Sandwich 2 biscuits together by spreading a little buttercream on one and adding a small spoonful of your Rhubarb Compote. Top with a second biscuit. Enjoy!!

DARTFORD CHORAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES A CENTURY OF SONG BY PAT EVERINGTON It’s hard to believe but we’ve been making music since 1919. Over the years we have had various conductors and our membership has fluctuated - but we are still here! More members are always welcome and indeed needed if we are to continue into the future.
