launched our first topper! The idea at first was to remain anonymous when posting postbox topper pictures online, with us creeping out at night to plant the topper, under the cover of darkness. Out on our daily walks, we noticed people stopping to admire and photograph the topper, and we were so glad to be making people smile in such a dark and isolating time!

For me, it all began in the first Covid lockdown, which coincided with my recovery from breast cancer.

Looking through Facebook, I saw the wonderful creations across the UK of these postbox toppers, and on daily walks around my area, I saw a sad-looking, bare-headed postbox crying out for an injection of colourful life, which no one had yet claimed. Enthusiastically, I researched patterns and soon realised this was a growing hobby, with groups on Facebook sharing their own patterns and creations. With masses of time on my hands, and to distract from my treatment and the Covid lockdown, I set to work on my first topper: an Easter-inspired scene.

After 3 weeks, and with the help of my grandson, whom I taught to knit when he was younger, we

After the success of the first Easter-themed topper, made up of chicks, rabbits and daffodils, I continued to create additional toppers for summer, Halloween, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Christmas, Remembrance Day, the Queen’s passing, Valentine’s Day and my current topper, for the King’s Coronation. Once the pictures have been posted online, I enjoy reading the positive comments, giving me the inspiration to create my next topper.

Although initially incognito, I think my secret is now out locally, with my community spotting me swapping the toppers, and I do occasionally get comments in person while transitioning to the next themed topper. I really enjoy giving people a small moment of happiness when they walk or drive past, and I will endeavour to continue to maintain my seasonal contributions to the local community!

DARTFORD’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE RIVER THAMES

Thames. Up until the late 1800s, it was deemed one of the ‘finest trout chalk’ rivers in the country and was extremely popular amongst anglers.

Beginning in Bromley, the River Cray joins the Darent at Dartford Creek and today both chalk streams are home to a wide variety of fish. Today, walkers can enjoy the beauty of the River Darent on the 19-mile Darent Valley Path.

Another of Dartford’s rivers, the River Cran, was little more than a stream that ran through Central Park and near to what is now Cranford Road. In 1923, one of the stone arches from the medieval town bridge was rebuilt there and can still be seen today, although the river itself now flows underground.

At the end of April, I took a boat trip along the Thames with the Port of London. This river, which has served us for generations, is still very busy. The Port of London is the largest in the UK and since last year has been a Freeport. This status means it is expected to grow in the next few years.

From the water you really get to see how much the Thames has developed with numerous businesses working on its shores. There are many warehouses and factories along the banks as well as aggregate and cargo terminals.

The Port of London Authority works hard to ensure the river can operate to its full potential, particularly ensuring the riverbed is sufficiently dredged to allow large container ships to access the port. The vision is for the Port of London to be the number one net zero commercial port with transportation of light freight to London with more and more businesses using the river as an alternative to road traffic.

Dartford’s relationship with the Thames has evolved over thousands of years and it is because of this river and some of our smaller ones, that Dartford first became a settlement.

The banks of the River Darent provided fertile farmland, and this is why people settled on them, together with its link to London. The river begins its journey in Westerham, flowing more than 20 miles to the tidal estuary in Dartford where it joins the

At the end of the 18th century, one writer described seeing large wharfs on the Thames at Greenhithe and how a ferry was used to transport horses and cattle over the river to Essex.

Dartford has also been a river crossing point since the Roman times, with the river connecting London with the rest of the world and the south through the Darenth Valley.

It’s thousands of years since our rivers brought people to Dartford and it is great to see them being used more and more today, for both business and pleasure.

HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE - THE GROWING COMMUNITY PROJECT

Healthy Living Centre Dartford is working to develop a thriving food growing network across the borough, connecting with schools, community groups and passionate growers to encourage a relationship with where our food comes from. Utilising unused space to grow food, we aim to promote community cohesion through enjoyment of food – growing, cooking and eating – and providing opportunities for community action to encourage biodiversity, share skills, knowledge, resources, and access to fresh food and healthy exercise in the outdoors.

Our partners include Dartford Science and Technology College, The Galaxy Trust, Wentworth Primary School, Our Lady’s Catholic School, Friends of the Earth, Spirit’s Rest, Big Barn and Planet Dartford. If you are interested in finding out more, or joining our volunteer team, contact us at growingcommunity@hlcdartford. org.uk or call 01322 311265. Dartford Growing Community can also be found on Facebook.

Frances Jones joined our team at the beginning of March, bringing her expertise in horticulture to support the Growing Community Project, and is the contributor for this month’s Dartford Living article.

March – April

This month brings a new start for many things, including myself! At the start of March, I took on the position of project lead for the Growing Community initiative. Being from a Horticultural background, a gardener by trade, the first thing I wanted to do was get my gardening boots on and get to work!

My first port of call was at our Community Garden in Cedar Road, getting things in shape ready for the growing season ahead, and preparing ground for gardening club sessions. The herb garden was cleared of weeds, plants moved to make room and then some new perennial varieties added, all labelled so people can see what they are.

The flower bed by the entrance was weeded and some new decorative perennial plants introduced - Geraniums, Sedums, Daisies and annual bedding to add a bit of colour. The raised bed was also weeded, and Gladioli bulbs planted for summer.

I was given a new plot and have taken over the maintenance of this, as well as another raised bed. These will both be used for Gardening

10 www.dartfordliving.com

Club growing. Our Wednesday Gardening club is going well, and membership has grown. Each week I go through various horticultural practices, explaining the different methods used and why, starting from ground clearing

and seed sowing through to planting. In March we took part in the RHS Big Seed Sow, and each week we spend time discussing how seeds germinate, how they grow, when is the best time to pot on and when best to plant

them outside or to sow directly into the soil. As well as meetings with various members of staff in school settings regarding growing spaces, we have taken part in site visits around Dartford and assisted with volunteer days for local school and community projects. The first being the Food Forest project at Dartford Science and Technology College. During the first session we helped to build raised beds and clear brush to make space for the new greenhouse. At the second volunteer day at DSTC we helped to create a new wildlife pond and fill the raised bed with layers of topsoil and mushroom compost.

During our Easter Family Activity Day at Tree Estate Community Centre, Growing Community set up a seed sowing stall, where people attending could learn how to sow seeds. We had saved up cardboard tubes to make pots and supplied those along with compost and

11 www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

Runner Bean, Pea and Sunflower seeds. The Gardening Club team are having a competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower and the most productive legume plants!

With May upon us there’s no rest for the wicked… we’ve lots of projects in the pipeline, and numerous jobs to do on the allotment. We’re raising vegetable seedlings to share in our seedling swaps and to encourage “growing your own” at home.

Tending to *“Ann’s plot” is next on my list of projects, and we’re taking on an additional plot, which will increase the amount of fresh, homegrown food Healthy Living Centre Dartford will have available to use in its cookery projects and community lunch clubs. And once our tadpoles have made their way out of the

pond, that will be getting a facelift too!

We’d really like to grow our volunteer team –we know there are many people in Dartford who support environmental and food growing projects. If you have some time to spare, how about joining us to get Dartford growing?

“An addiction to gardening is not all bad when you consider all the other choices in life”.

*The late chairperson of Healthy Living Centre Dartford, Councillor Ann Allen MBE, was a passionate grower and loved tending her plot in the gardens – not only enjoying the fruit of her labours but getting some much needed “away” time and healthy exercise. That little patch will always be a monument to Ann’s support and dedication to Healthy Living Centre Dartford.

ACHIEVE A BRIGHTER, WHITER SMILE WITH DARTFORD ROAD DENTAL CENTRE’S PROFESSIONAL TEETH WHITENING

A noticeably whiter, brighter smile can really boost your confidence and make you want to show it off again. Teeth can lose their natural whiteness over time, but whitening offers an easy and safe way to lighten the colour of your teeth in a short amount of time.

Here at Dartford Road Dental Centre in Kent, tooth whitening is one of our most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments available and can transform your smile in a matter of weeks. If you’re feeling embarrassed or self-conscious about your yellowing teeth, whitening may be the simple answer for you.

whitening. It will only work on your natural teeth.

How does tooth whitening work?

The whitening gel contains hydrogen peroxide. The gel when used correctly, gently lifts out the traces of old food, drinks, and tobacco that have become stained in the pores of your tooth enamel. Hydrogen peroxide is a dental safe product that cleans, disinfects and whitens teeth.

The more you whiten your teeth, the lighter and brighter the result will be. Achieving your desired shade is easily manageable as you are in control of how bright you want your final result. If you want your smile brighter, continue to wear the whitening trays as per your dentists’ instructions.

What is the procedure?

Is whitening suitable for everyone?

Tooth whitening may not be suitable for you if you fall within one or more of the following categories:

- You have severely sensitive teeth

- You have receding gums

- You have cavities

- You are under 18 years of age

- You are pregnant or breastfeeding

- You have visible fillings, crowns, veneers, implants, bridges, inlays, onlays

If you have had previous dental work done such as fillings, crowns, veneers, implants, bridges, inlays, onlays, it is important to note that the dental material used during these procedures is not affected by the bleaching agent, meaning the material will remain the same colour during

After an initial dental exam to ensure whitening is suitable for you, we take impressions of your teeth in the surgery to make you your bespoke whitening trays. At home, you fill them with our take-home whitening gel and wear them every day or evening for the recommended time as prescribed by your dentist.

How long until I can expect a dazzling white smile?

Whitening to your desired shade on average takes around 2 weeks but can take up to 3-4 weeks depending on how often you are wearing the trays and how many shades lighter you want your smile to be. For example, a patient that wishes to have a more natural shade may wear the trays for a shorter length of time than a patient that wanted a dazzling white TV star smile.

Extra whitening gels are available to purchase from the practice and whitening can be easily topped up if you wish to brighten up your smile.

TALES FROM THE RIVERBANK: WALK THROUGH HISTORY ALONG THE DARENT VALLEY (PART ONE)

Summer is the perfect time for an adventure, so why not head out of Dartford and follow the Darent Valley trail? There are lots of official guides to choose from, both paper-based and online – I’d recommend visiting www.explorekent.org.uk or www.kentramblers.org.uk as a starting point. The waymarked path is nineteen miles long, running between Dartford and Sevenoaks, but don’t panic! If you’re not up to that, let’s walk together and look at some of the highlights along this (very historic) well-trodden route…

Did You Know?

The name ‘Darent’ comes from the Celtic word ‘deva’ which means oak. Oak trees are a familiar sight throughout the valley.

Archaeologists have discovered evidence of settlements in the Darent Valley dating back to the Neolithic period (Dartford Museum holds numerous artefacts from these excavations). Farming tools, pottery and jewellery have all been found, giving

a fascinating insight into life during this time, as well as the Bronze age, Iron age and beyond. Rural life would have been tough, with chalk soil and marshland to contend with, but farmsteads and communities were established – particularly when the Romans showed up!

You may have visited Lullingstone Villa (now owned by English Heritage), the most notable Roman residence in the valley and the best preserved. But did you know that villas once existed all along the river, sometimes only two miles apart? At their peak, during the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it is estimated that there were thirteen villas in total. The Romans were pretty sophisticated when it came to domestic engineering – they even developed an early system of underfloor heating at Lullingstone and similar sites (such as Crofton in nearby Orpington).

True or False?

Lullingstone is the only castle on the Darent

18 www.dartfordliving.com
HAWLEY

valley route?

False – there are actually two castles: Lullingstone and the remains of Eynsford castle, dating back to the Norman period.

Villages sprang up around the river, which was used for transporting grain and other goods. Sutton-at-Hone and Lullingstone are derived from Saxon names while William de Eynsford made his mark on the area from the 1080s, when Eynsford Castle originates. Lullingstone castle is mentioned in the Doomsday book and was the Lord Mayor of London’s residence from around 1279. Strictly speaking, it is more of a manor house than castle but remains a grade two listed building. Another notable 13th century site on the route is St John’s Jerusalem, the chapel (now owned by the National Trust) on a moated island in Sutton at Hone. Originally a monastery, the chapel and surrounding gardens are still accessible to the public on certain days.

The 15th century saw the first pedestrian bridge erected over the river at Dartford, which had grown into a thriving market town. The river became central to local industry, particularly as a resource for local mills. Flour, cotton and gunpowder mills were established between the Dartford-Farningham section of the Darent and at one point there were thirty eight paper mills in existence!

‘The still Darent, in whose waters cleare, ten thousand fishes play and decke his pleasant stream.’ Edmund Spenser, 1596.

Royal visitors to the area have included Henry VIII and Queen Anne, who both stayed at Lullingstone Castle. King Henry also spent time at Otford Palace, built in 1514 by William Warham, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Apparently the design was inspired by Lullingstone’s architecture, especially its gatehouse, although only part of a tower remains today (and is a scheduled monument). Henry enjoyed deer hunting in the local countryside, which remained largely rural despite the impact of mills and growing industry. Valley dwellers, generally farmers and labourers, liked to enjoy their free time too – often in public houses, which still exist today. You might want to visit one or two on your tour – Farningham alone has two pubs dating back to the 16th / 17th century: the Lion and the Pied Bull, originally a coaching inn and terminus for carriages to London.

Next month we’ll explore the Darent’s history further, looking at how the industrial revolution made its mark on the valley and surrounding villages. There are wartime stories too, with Darent valley residents playing their part in the war effort – both on land and in the skies above! And, being July, one particular (rather profitable) crop gets a mention. You’ll be sure to spot it if you’re heading Shoreham way this summer (Clue: it’s purple and has a very distinctive scent…)

Travel Spotlight - The Maldives

When you think ‘tropical paradise’, that image in your mind’s eye is the archipelago of islands that makes the Maldives. This is a country where paddle boarding and massages, private dining and island hopping, dolphin spotting and sunset cruises, could all become part your daily existence. We’ve scoured this ridiculously idyllic archipelago in the Indian Ocean to find the most fabulous resorts of all, each one its own private island fringed by Insta-perfect beaches, complete with swaying palm trees and teeming coral reefs.

As soon as you step off the speedboat or seaplane from the capital Male, the sea is the thread that connects every moment. Whichever of the 1,200 islands you find yourself on, you will discover the softest sand you’ve ever felt, and dazzling turquoise waters that are almost unbelievable. Luxurious resorts have been created to match the paradise of the natural world, making the Maldives a destination that lives and breathes the essence of barefoot luxury.

Your time in the Maldives is yours to spend exactly as you desire. The impeccably designed resorts provide everything you need to create a rhythm of life of your own design. Spend days on the deck of your overwater villa, exploring the lush interior of your island, or sipping cocktails by your private pool. Indulge in a little spa time, snorkel or dive amid the rainbowed coral reefs, or visit a traditional community on a local island. And when the evening draws in, climb aboard a traditional boat and travel to an uninhabited island, for an evening meal under the stars that you’ll never forget.

A destination that embraces the concept of relaxation, every Maldivian resort offers incredible spa and wellness experiences. You’ll discover these spas in treehouses or hideaway gardens, while a menu of original treatments are accompanied by oils infused with locally sourced ingredients, from seaweed to island-grown herbs.

While the Maldives is a quintessential honeymoon destination and adult only retreats, it is also a perfect spot for once-in-a-lifetime family

22 www.dartfordliving.com

holidays. Family villas with private pools, kids clubs with a difference, and evening outdoor cinema or stargazing activities mean the Maldives is genuinely family friendly, and everyone can have an exceptional experience in this incredible setting. Here are 5 reasons why the Maldives is the dream family holiday destination.

1. Family activities and experiences - At Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort there are cookery classes, outdoor cinema, glass-bottom boat trips for spotting the colourful marine life, PADI learn-to-dive courses for juniors over ten years and beginners surf lessons, as well as dolphin watching cruises, bicycles for riding around the island and glassbottom kayaks for exploring the lagoon. As well as complimentary watersports at Soneva Fushi there are gardens, jungle and beaches to explore, stargazing with an astronomer, private alfresco film nights and family picnics and guided snorkelling with a resident marine biologist.

2. Family rooms and villas - Most island resorts offer a range of beach and overwater villas that are roomy enough to accommodate a family of four or more. For families with toddlers and younger children beachfront villas with direct access to the powder-soft sands are ideal, whilst those with older children, might prefer staying in an overwater villa. Many overwater villas have a minimum age criterion for children, generally between eight and twelve years. For younger children a signed waiver may be accepted.

3. Children’s clubs and babysitting - Many family friendly resorts offer complimentary children’s clubs for those over three or four. Younger guests are usually welcome under parental supervision. Babysitting tends to carry an additional charge. Innovative programmes include arts and crafts, coral nursery visits with a marine biologist, stargazing with an astronomer, alfresco film screenings, and surf and scuba diving schools for juniors.

Island resorts offering children’s clubs include Niyama Private Islands Maldives boasting one of the best children’s clubs in the Maldives, complimentary for three to twelve year olds. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi children under fifteen stay and eat free of charge when sharing with two

adults. Its well-run Koamas club offers exciting activities and a range of experiences for three to twelve year olds. Soneva Fushi’s complimentary The Den club is for those over four and there’s also a teen lounge. Kuredu Island Resort & Spa features one of the largest clubs and welcomes three to twelve year olds free of charge.

4. Family dining - Most restaurants at Niyama Private Islands Maldives offer children’s special menus including at the fine dining restaurant Edge, reached by speedboat, and Nest set in a treehouse serving Asian delicacies. Sun Siyam Iru Fushi has a selection of eleven restaurants, from global cuisines and themed dinners to weekly barbecues on the beach, Italian favourites and Middle Eastern specialities perfect for sharing. Invilla dining is possible at Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort and Kuredu Island Resort & Spa tempts with sumptuous buffets, healthy dishes at the Beach Shack and Italian favourites at Franco’s; sure to be a popular choice with children.

5. Short transfers - Families with younger children might prefer resorts close to Malé airport to reduce transfer times; Bandos Maldives is 20 minutes by speedboat, Kurumba Maldives, 10 minutes by speedboat, and Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort is reached by a 30 minute speedboat journey.

The cuisine in the Maldives will capture your imagination just as much as island living itself. Influenced by flavours from India and Sri Lanka, you can expect cuisine infused with spice, and plenty of freshly caught fish. The astounding natural beauty of the Maldives means many of the hotels and resorts are intent on doing everything they can to protect it. As a result, food sustainability is important here, and many chefs source their produce locally and have their own island kitchen gardens for growing herbs, fruit and vegetables. The best time to visit is November to April, with January to March the driest months, but there is never a bad time to be here.

Shona said: “I’m so excited to be making my panto debut as Belle in Beauty and the Beast this Christmas in Dartford. I once featured as Belle for a Children in Need feature back in 2018, so I can’t wait to play her in panto – it’s going to be so much fun. See you this Christmas Dartford!”

Beauty and the Beast follows Belle who finds herself transported to a cursed castle and held captive by a hideous beast. To her surprise, the castle is full of magical characters placed under a spell by an evil enchantress. Can Belle see beyond the monster and fall in love with her captor before the last petal falls from the enchanted rose? Or will the Beast’s selfishness

cost him the world he once knew and the hand of the girl who has melted his heart?

On the casting, Tal Rosen, Theatre Director at The Orchard Theatre, said; “It’s wonderful news that Shona will be making her pantomime debut in Dartford. We’re excited to welcome her to The Orchard Theatre where she is sure to enchant audiences with her stunning voice in the role as Belle.”

Packed with all the traditional pantomime ingredients Dartford audiences expect, Beauty and the Beast features laugh-out-loud comedy, stunning scenery, beautiful costumes and plenty of boos and hisses.

Beauty and the Beast comes to the Orchard Theatre in Dartford for 3 weeks only from 9 December. Tickets are on sale now from £13, To book visit orchardtheatre.co.uk.

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS

BACK HOME

I had a flying visit back to Dartford last week. Eldest Offspring invited me to stay with her over coronation weekend. Leaving Other Half to feed the cats, I boarded the ferry and sailed to the mainland. Apart from roadworks on the A3, an overturned lorry and the usual creep up the M25, the journey was uneventful.

It was my second trip back since moving eight months ago and I was surprised at the changes to the area.

A new town is taking shape in the quarry at Bluewater. It had been spoken about for so long, and then appeared almost overnight. I thought it would take years to see any buildings at all.

Bluewater itself seems to be going through a change. While lively and busy as normal, (or was it post Coronation service freedom) there are several areas of closed shops which surprised me. Is it the rents? The aftermath of the Covid, or just a sign of the times.

Dartford itself has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons, stories of violence and sadly murder, putting the town on the map. I note the borough council has some farreaching plans to improve access and make the town centre a pleasant place to go. I hope the bad publicity doesn’t put people off.

Overall, I enjoyed my trip back. I caught up with old friends, saw how my old neighbourhood had

changed, with many houses for sale and an equal number being renovated. It demonstrates that the area still has appeal. Such actions should bring in new people who will settle and become part of the community. We need new people with new ideas to ensure the area remains a place for families to settle and grow.

GOD SAVE THE KING?

So, we have a new King and Queen. Whatever your views on Charles and Camilla and the rest of the Royal Family, the monarchy is still with us. It does need to change though.

There will always be those who argue the upkeep of the Royal Family simply isn’t worth it. I hope the new King will streamline the working family, cutting loose those who benefit from its largesse but do very little. They will have to find other ways of making a living. It will be a step in the right direction towards a modern, working and valid Royal Family to take us into the future. At a time when so many of us are struggling to make end meet, such an extravagant ceremony may have seemed out of place. However, I’d rather have some colour and spectacle than be a republic. I do believe having the monarchy is one of the few experiences we can offer the rest of the world. The income generated from visitors to the Royal palaces and associated royal events during 2019/20 reached £71.5 million pounds according to a recent report in The Independent.

Also, let’s be honest, as a nation, we do ‘spectacle’ better than anyone!

THAT BIRTHDAY BUCKET LIST!

A couple of months ago I wrote about getting on in years and how I was dreading reaching seventy. Well, as I said, it came and went, and nothing changed. However, I’ve added to my ‘Life To Do List’, in the hopes that I can continue to grow old disgracefully.

The surfing idea is on hold – I seriously doubt my knees could take it. However, paddle boarding seems safer, so I’ll investigate that. Horse-riding is still on the agenda, and I’ve decided I want to do a 4x4 driving course - not because I have one, but I just want to. I’ve resumed writing and might get that second book out this year. I have a new swimsuit in readiness for the summer yet may just start what is termed a ‘mature movers aquacise’ class at my local pool. Mind you, I’ll need to find a bathing cap first, in case my lovely pink hair turns green – a step too far even for me.

Take care of yourselves.

WALKING WITH THE DARTS

Hello again, welcome to another edition of Walking With The Darts, a monthly update on all things related to Dartford FC, courtesy of Dartford Living Magazine.

It doesn’t feel possible that the 2022-23 season is now over after more than nine months of thrills and spills on the football pitch. It has been another thoroughly enjoyable ride, as I’ve followed the Darts on the road as well as on the sidelines at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park.

Unfortunately, our adventure ended with an unlucky defeat in the lottery of a penalty shootout against St Albans City in the play-off semi-final. Harvey Bradbury gave us an early lead, before Aidan Francis-Clarke levelled before the half-time break. The Darts tried desperately to get the second goal their efforts deserved, but it just wasn’t to be and, after extra-time, the visitors went on to win the

game from spot-kicks.

So, we will spend another season competing in the difficult National League South, but will face a number of different teams next term. We say goodbye to Ebbsfleet United and Oxford City, as they will deservedly be challenging in the National League next season, while Hungerford Town, Cheshunt, Concord Rangers, and Dulwich Hamlet all suffered relegation to the league(s) below.

Meanwhile, we welcome the likes of National League relegated sides Maidstone United, Torquay United, and Yeovil Town. We also welcome newly promoted outfits Aveley FC, Weston-Super-Mare, and Truro City to the National League South. Dartford FC will certainly be racking up the miles next season for sure!

Nothing is quiet during the off-season, as many

Men’s team photos by Carol White-Griffiths, Women’s` team photos: Taur Everard

continue to work behind the scenes in building the squad for the next campaign. And, since manager Alan Dowson was rewarded with a new two-year contract by the club recently, he has been working tirelessly since... At the time of writing, the likes of Jordan Wynter, Tommy Block, Marvin Herschel, and Sam Odaudu have all been retained. Meanwhile, Lewis Manor (from Concord Rangers) and Harvey Bradbury (from Dorchester Town) have both signed for the club. The latter, of course, was on loan for the closing few weeks last season and netted six goals in eight games, so it’s delightful news to have the striker sign on a permanent basis.

So, preparations for the next campaign are well under way at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park, and the pre-season is also being put together quickly as well... Three friendly fixtures have been arranged at the time of writing, with the Darts hosting Charlton Athletic on the 8th of July. We then travel to Margate (18th of July) and Bromley (25th of July), both of which will be evening kickoffs. Keep an eye on the official club website and social media platforms to keep updated on any additional fixtures.

In other news, Samir Carruthers and Tom Bonner were selected in the Vanarama National League South Team of The Season, so huge congratulations to them both!

As far as Connor Dymond’s Dartford FC Women side is concerned, they were extremely unlucky to finish second best in their defence of the League Cup a few weeks ago. The ladies started slowly and went behind by a rather fortunate goal straight from Georgia Tibble’s corner. However, they grew into the game and were unlucky to not be ahead by the half-time break, let alone be level.

As the gorgeous afternoon weather continued, Lizzie Adams and Co made a game of it, with an excellent second-half performance. A superb

run and assist by the brilliant Shauni Griffiths set up Emily Vaughan to smash home the equaliser, before poor officiating denied the Darts a dead cert penalty!

But, as they continued to press high up the pitch whilst constantly attacking, Worthing caught them on the break... and the game was virtually killed off by goals from Emily Linscer and Ellie Russell.

Whist Worthing were worthy winners, with more consistent officials’ decision making, the result could have been completely different. Regardless of that, however, Lizzie Adams and Co put on an excellent performance and should be proud of themselves.

By the time you read this, the ladies’ season will also be finished and Connor Dymond and his coaching staff will begin preparations for their next adventure. In the meantime, though, they face Enfield Town FC at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park in what is their last league game of the season.

Finally, there will be a Dartford FC Community Fun Day on Sunday the 11th of June. The day starts at 10am and runs until 2pm, and is completely free to attend, so please do come along and enjoy the activities. Please check the club’s official website and social media platforms for further details. I hope to see you all there!

As always, thank you for your continued support and thanks for reading.

TIPS FOR SLEEPING WELL

to watch what you put in your body in the hours before bedtime.

Develop soothing bedtime rituals. Taking a bath, playing music, or practicing a relaxation technique such as meditation or deep breathing can help you wind down.

Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford.

As we age, we often experience normal changes in our sleeping patterns, such as becoming sleepy earlier, waking up earlier, or enjoying less deep sleep. Sleep is just as important to our physical and emotional health as it was when we were younger.

These tips can help you overcome age-related sleep problems and get a good night’s rest. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, even on weekends.

Keep busy. Social activities, seeing the family, volunteering, or learning something new can all help exercise the mind and tire it out for the night. Don’t watch TV or look at a tablet or computer for an hour before bedtime. Doing these activities can suppress melatonin levels and affect subsequent sleep.

Use diet and exercise to improve sleep. Two of the daytime habits that most affect sleep are diet and exercise. As well as eating a healthy diet during the day, it’s particularly important

Limit caffeine late in the day. Avoid caffeine (from coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate) late in the day. Minimize liquid intake before sleep. Limit what you drink within the hour and a half before bedtime. Get out into the sunshine. Sunshine regulates melatonin levels and hence affects sleep cycles. Try to get outside for a little while every day. When at home, open the curtains during the day and move your chair into a sunny spot of the room. It is important to remember that just because you are sleeping less, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have sleep ‘problems’. However, if you are not sleeping well, having to get up frequently at night, or not waking up feeling refreshed, consider visiting the doctor for more advice and information.

To make a suggestion for a future topic, please write to me at c.uppenkamp@dartford. homeinstead.co.uk or by post to Home Instead Dartford, St Fidelis House, St Fidelis Road, Erith, DA8 1AT. Alternatively, you can also call me on 01322923750.

In this month’s article we look at a new electric vehicle and significant upgrades to two existing models..

newest engine type is the 48V hybrid version, which consists of a new-generation 134bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. This system is designed to improve efficiency around town, with a claimed 15% reduction in fuel consumption. The fully electric Peugeot e-2008 has also been updated, getting a new, more powerful electric motor (up from 134bhp to 154bhp) and thus the range increases to 252 miles on one full charge officially. At the front, every 2008 now gets three vertical LED daytime running lights on each side and on the inside its remains very similar to the outgoing model. It is expected to cost from around £25,000 when on sale from Summer 2023.

2023 Honda e:Ny1- this is Honda’s first electric SUV, with an official range of more than 250 miles, which is further than its competitors. Powering the e:Ny1 is a single electric motor that produces 201bhp. With a maximum charging rate of 78kW, boosting the battery from 10-80% should take around 45 minutes with a public fast charger. On the inside, the e:Ny1 gets a large, 15.1in portrait-style infotainment screen that sits in the centre of the dashboard. All versions of the e:Ny1 come with a battery heat pump (which helps to reduce the heater and air-con’s impact on range by better regulating interior temperature), as well as wireless Apple Carplay and wired Android Auto. Pricing for the e:Ny1 is expected to start from around £45,000 when it goes on sale early next year.

2023 Mercedes E-Class – the sixth-generation luxury car arrives with improvements in electric ranges. The new E-Class features a longer bonnet, different headlights and optional flushfitting door handles, as well as a larger front grille with a surround that can be illuminated as an optional extra. The fresh look is coupled with slightly revised dimensions; the new E-Class is 28mm wider and 26mm longer than its predecessor. A rework has given the new E-Class a snazzy, screen-filled interior with a 12.3in digital driver’s display and a 14.4in portraitstyle infotainment screen. There’s an optional Intelligent Parking Pilot function featuring Level 4 autonomous driving technology, which allows the E-Class to park fully automatically without a driver (where laws allow). Prices are estimated to be around £50,000 when it goes on sale in Summer 2023.

Well well well, Mauricio Pochettino is joining Chelsea. Now, I know what you’re thinking: why on earth would he do that? Is he a glutton for punishment? Does he enjoy the constant media scrutiny and pressure to win? Or maybe he just really likes the colour blue.

But in all seriousness, there are a few reasons why Pochettino might have made this move. For one, Chelsea is a club with a lot of potential. They have a very solid squad, a passionate fanbase, and a history of success. Plus, they’re located in one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world.

Another reason might be the challenge. Pochettino is a man who loves a challenge. He took Tottenham from mid-table mediocrity to title contenders, and he might see Chelsea as his next big project.

And let’s not forget about the money. I mean, come on. Chelsea is one of the richest clubs in the world. They can afford to pay Pochettino a pretty penny, and who doesn’t love a fat pay cheque?

NATIONAL CARERS WEEK

Who cares for the carers?

National Carers Week (5-11 June) is a time for us all to recognise and offer thanks to those unsung heroes – our unpaid carers.

A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. There are an estimated 5.7 million carers in the UK and many do not recognise that they are a carer. Compare this to the 1.3 million NHS employees. The value of unpaid care is equivalent to the total funding of the NHS. Caring can be hugely rewarding but can impact on all aspects of life.

Who are the carers?

People aged 46-65 are most likely to become carers. 59% of carers are women and they are more likely to provide more hours of care. Over 376,000 young people are known to be carers. However, some estimates suggest that as many as one in five schoolchildren are young carers and one in eight young carers are under the age of eight. It is not difficult to understand the impact that this would have on their education, social life and wellbeing.

Impact on finances

One in seven carers are juggling their caring responsibilities with work and 75% worry about managing both working and caring. 600 people per day leave work to care. For those who are working, it is worth speaking to your employer about their policies and procedures for those with

caring responsibilities, including flexible working and emergency carers leave. Carers charities can advise you about the benefits and other financial support that you may be entitled to.

Health and wellbeing

If you are a carer, it is important to look after your own health and wellbeing. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. 60% of carers have a long term health problem or disability. They may struggle to access health services due to their caring responsibilities. All GP surgeries have a carers register – please let us know if you are a carer so that we can add you to it. Our social prescribing team and/or care coordinators can provide advice and support, and put you in contact with other agencies that can help to support you as a carer.

Carers may report feeling lonely or isolated. This can contribute to stress and depression. It is important that you recognise if this is happening and seek help. Caring can involve a range of emotions, from feelings of resentment and guilt, to grief and even anticipatory grief, where you grieve for the person your loved one once was. If you are struggling with your feelings, talk to someone about it. This might be a friend or family member, or you could join a carers support group and speak to those who are going through the same. If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out to your GP practice or other agencies such as the Samaritans or Mind.

Getting a carers assessment

If you are aged 18 or over, and provide regular unpaid care, then you are entitled to a carers assessment. This will look at the support you need as a carer; from equipment and advice on benefits/financial support, through to emotional support and breaks from caring. Your local adult social services department can help arrange this for you. In Dartford, Swanley and Gravesham, Imago (0300 011 1965) undertakes carers assessments.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our carers. If you know someone who is a carer, show your support by saying ‘I care…’

SERV KENT, THE BLOODRUNNERS

We are able to quickly respond to requests for donated breast milk which helps mothers & their babies at this important time in their lives. Since February 2013, SERV Kent volunteers have been working in partnership with the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust to supply them with regular stocks of blood which are carried onboard the aircraft, enabling the specialist Doctors & Paramedics to provide instant emergency treatment at the scene of an incident. This service was the first of its kind in the UK outside London and ensures that the people of the three Counties receive the highest quality trauma care possible. Many lives have been saved since the service began.

SERV Kent, also known as the ‘Bloodrunners’, is a registered charity that delivers blood, blood products, samples for testing, home dialysis samples from patients who have kidney disease & other medical items to hospitals across the County of Kent, 24 hours a day, free of charge, whenever and wherever they are urgently needed.

Riders, drivers and controllers all give up their free time to be on call, on a rota basis. We have up to six riders/drivers on duty every night plus two on the Air Ambulance run and a controller, 24/7, 365 days a year.

In May 2015, we began transporting Breast Milk. This is collected from donor mothers and taken to a Milk Bank and from a Milk Bank to a mother’s home or NICU Unit (Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit) where it is used for premature & sick babies and for mothers who need help at this important time.

One of our most important hospitals is Darent Valley. In addition to blood products, we also have a donated breast milk ‘hub’ at the hospital which is used to store frozen breast milk for when it is needed at the Neo-natal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in Kent. Units are based at Darent Valley, Medway Maritime, Tunbridge Wells at Pembury & William Harvey at Ashford.

We have also been working with the Demelza Children’s Hospice & the Ellenor Hospice Group since 2013 to transfer urgent medication and equipment between the Hospice and hospitals, pharmacies and even to family homes to bring parents whatever is needed for their children.

We rely entirely on donations for our income. Our riders and drivers generally use their own vehicles and pay for their own fuel. Your donations could help to save a life. Our charity needs around £50,000pa to cover the costs of our motor fleet; business insurances; HQ running costs and training costs.

In June 2021, we were awarded THE QUEEN’S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE

In December 2021, we were winners of THE KENT VOLUNTEERING AWARDS arranged by the KM Charity Team.

In March 2022, we were awarded the High Sheriff of Kent Consort’s Award for our volunteering services.

Everything we do helps someone, somewhere – we cover every part of Kent. Visit our website: www.servkent.co.uk for more information or email us on: membership@servkent.org to join our crew of volunteers.

LEMON MERINGUE SQUARES

These are equally delicious - and moreish - with or without the meringue layer. Cut into different size squares for adults and children.

What you need:

For the base:

175g Plain Flour

75g Icing Sugar

150g Cold Butter, cut into small cubes

1 Egg Yolk

For the filling:

2 Large Eggs

200g Caster Sugar

2Tbsp Plain Flour

4Tbsp Lemon Juice – Either juiced fresh or from a bottle is fine.

For the topping:

2 Egg Whites – it’s important to make sure no Egg Yolk is in this.

What to do:

Preheat your oven to 180° C Fan.

Put the Plain Flour and Icing Sugar in a large bowl.

Add the cold, cubed Butter and rub the flour into the butter – using only your fingertips –until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir the Egg Yolk into the flour mixture and combine into a dough. Pop into the fridge for 20 minutes while you weigh out the ingredients for the filling.

Press the dough evenly into a greased & lined 8” square cake/brownie tin. Silicon brownie trays are good as there is no need to grease/line them.

Prick the shortbread with a fork. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until the surface looks slightly golden.

While the base is baking, make the filling. It is important to add the lemon mix onto the base while the shortbread is still hot so the lemon curd will start cooking immediately. To make the filling, simply whisk all the ingredients together until light and fluffy.

As soon as the base is looking golden, pour the lemon mix on top of the hot shortbread, return to the oven and bake for another 1525 minutes – until the surface starts to turn a light golden.

Take out of the oven for a few minutes while you make the meringue – but these treats are equally delicious without the meringue if you prefer.

To make the meringue, whisk the Egg Whites until they create soft peaks. Continue whisking while you add the Caster Sugar - gradually - until all the Sugar has been combined and the mixture creates stiff peaks when the whisk is lifted out.

Spoon or pipe the meringue, carefully, over the surface of the lemon mix and pop back in the oven for 5 minutes (or until perfectly coloured).

Leave to cool, then cut into squares and enjoy! xxx
