DARTS LEGEND, ELLIOT BRADBROOK, RETIRES

Bradbrook originally joined Dartford FC in the summer of 2009 from Maidstone United where he’d played his junior and youth football. He joined the Darts after a spell at University in Ohio, America. Widely regarded as one of the club’s greatest players the inspirational captain Bradbrook has now racked up 444 appearances and 142 goals from midfield for the club. His ten years of commitment have seen spells in various leagues across the non-league pyramid but he was most notably captain of the side in 2012/13, when the Darts finished as the highest placed semi-professional team in the country with an 8th place finish in the National League. You’ve been at the club through various different stages of not just your career but your life, from working full-time to becoming a dad – how challenging has it been to find a balance between family commitments and playing? Finding a balance is always difficult as a non-league player. Working full-time and then training twice a week and playing on Saturday’s is tough. You spend a lot of time away from family and friends which is something that not many people realise unless you are involved in it. It is tough, but enjoyable at the same time. You played most of your career under Tony Burman 6

at the club – what made him stand out in your mind as a manager? Tony’s ability to build a team full of great characters was excellent, and that showed on the pitch even though we might not have been the most talented group individually. Year after year, the dressing room was full of great characters and the fact that we were all very close meant that the football took care of itself most of the time. People enjoyed coming in to training and went into games believing we would win. Tony was very good at creating that sort of environment.

look beyond myself, Ryan Hayes and Lee Noble you’ve got other players like Tom Bonner, Andy Pugh and Ronnie Vint who have each played hundreds of times for the club over the years so there is a really good culture here which I hope will continue. I hear the calls for the club to become more professional in certain areas, spend more money etc. but that would come at the expense of that culture which I think would be a shame. And it certainly wouldn’t guarantee further success. It is important to have a good group of people around who really care about the club in my opinion.

You’ve played with hundreds of different players at Dartford – is there anyone that sticks out in your mind as the best you have played with and one who you think was underrated? I’d say Lee Noble to both - he is by far the best I have played with and I can’t think of anyone who I have played against that were better either. And I’d also call him the most underrated too. How a league club didn’t snap him up years ago I will never know. He offers everything you could ever want in a player - quality on the ball, work rate off it, creative, tough and determined. He’s the type of player who would be the best in the team no matter what level he played at.

You’ve made it clear you don’t intend to stay within the game but with your commitment and love for the

With over 400 league games under your belt, is there one game that sticks out in your mind? Is there a season that sticks out in your mind? I’d have to say the play-off final win against Welling. Purely because of what the game meant. It was a fantastic day that will live long in the memory and one that I will never forget. Another game I look back fondly on was when we beat Luton at Kenilworth Road. It was one of the rare times where (as a non-league player) I felt like I was playing in a proper football game that you might see on TV or something. And for us to beat like we did was an amazing achievement and typified what we were about that season. Much has been said about ‘the core’ of yourself, Ryan Hayes, Lee Noble and Danny Harris – to have such longevity in the modern game, is that what you would see as one of the strengths of the club in terms of creating the right culture? The modern game doesn’t lend itself well to managers or players spending years and years at the same club, but that is what makes Dartford a special place. club will you still be watching the boys from time to time on a Saturday? Absolutely. I am very much looking forward to coming back and watching games from the stands. This club has a big future ahead of it and I have a lot of friends here who I know will take the club to the next level soon. And I look forward to seeing it happen. You’ve always had a special relationship with the fans and in the eyes of many (if not all) you will go down as a legend of the club – how special is that to leave such a lasting impression at the club? I always felt at home at this football club which I why I chose to spend my career here. So to leave such a lasting impression on people is very special. It’s all been quite overwhelming really. I think people could see that I always gave my best when I went out onto the pitch and that tends to resonate, especially with supporters because they care so passionately about the game and the club. I am just pleased that I was able to contribute to a successful period in the club’s history and hopefully have helped to lay the foundations for more success in the future.

Elliot joined Dartford in July 2009 and has played a tot of 444 games scoring 142 goals. That puts him 6th for appearances and 2nd for goals scored in the history of the club. Elliot captained Dartford to the Isthmian League Premier Division Championship in 2010, National League South Promotion Final Winners in 2012 and two Kent Senior Cup Final wins. He has been an outstanding leader as captain of the club both on and off the pitch. We wish Elliot the very best of luck for the future in whatever he does. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a stranger. KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY

Contributed by Cllr David Mote, Mayor of Dartford Every time we have a visitor to the Mayor’s Parlour we give them a copy of the Floreat Dartford leaflet, which has a black and white picture the Dartford Borough Sergeant-at-Arms and Mace Bearer from the 1930’s on its front cover. We were recently approached at a Dartford Rotary Club event by John Smeeth who told us his father had been the Dartford Mase Bearer. So we sent John a copy of the leaflet and he identified the gentleman on its cover as his Grandfather, Walther Leslie Smeeth, who was carrying the old Mace, which now resides under lock and key in the Mayor’s Parlour. We just had to invite John in to Mayor’s Parlour to see the Mace his Grandfather and Father carried along with the Sergeant-at-Arms uniform, which is displayed in a case at the Centre. John also brought some pictures of his Grandfather to show us and (don’t tell anyone) we gave John some gloves to wear and allowed him to have a close look at the Mace.

Vintage and Craft Fair coming to Dartford in May and June!

Refreshments will be available, plus tasty cakes & savoury snacks. At the Mick Jagger Centre, there will be a fully licensed bar and Prosecco stall and at Dartford Girls’ Grammar we’ll have a vintage tearoom. Both fairs will have a swing/jazz entertainer, vintage DJ and vintage makeovers. MD of Do You Vintage?, Julie Ricketts, is a vintage enthusiast and collector. What began as a hobby became a business, starting 3 years ago at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich and then at Shrewsbury House in Shooters Hill. Julie says: ‘Dartford seemed the obvious choice when I was looking for new venues, with its thriving performing arts, dance and theatre scene. Lots of our traders come up from Kent and now they will be glad to have the fair on their doorstep.’

So as nervous as I was, we had the scan to reveal……a beautiful baby that wouldn’t keep still or get in the right position. In fact the baby moved and kicked throughout the whole scan indicating to me that he or she wants to keep us guessing. No Deal Sex-It. Maybe they will grow up to be a politician! BipBopShop Hope you all had a fantastic Easter! Ours was spent Facebook/Twitter/Instagram eagerly anticipating our 20 week scan. So forget what is @bipbopmum going on with our government right now, we were having Visit the website BipBopShop.com debates of our own as to whether or not we should find out our baby’s gender. I, like many other mums-to-be have stared at that 12 week scan picture for weeks, trying to put to the test all gender theories in the hope of successfully recognising if my baby is a boy or a girl. The Nub Theory (angle of the dangle), the Skull Theory (shape of the head), the Ramzi Theory (position of the placenta) are all theories that actually have no scientific proof but many mums have used to correctly predict the sex of an unborn baby from as early as 6 weeks.

Many women also believe in old wives’ tales which include food cravings, the shape of the bump and even the date of conception to calculate if baby is team pink or blue. As for me? I’m just confused! I’m constantly changing my mind! Each scan picture looks different and I’m also comparing everything to my first pregnancy where many of these theories indicated that I was having a girl which was ultimately incorrect. But surely the not knowing and the guessing is part of the fun? We didn’t find out with my first and I quite like the idea of a surprise this time too. However, Hubby did in fact win the argument, so I had to gear myself up to find out. At least it would help us to plan a bit more.

DARTFORD ROAD RUNNERS

Dartford Road Runners was formed in 1998 and is based at Princes Park (Dartford Football Club). Unlike the other running clubs in the town we are over 18â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only. The simple reason for this is that the clubs using the Central park track have the safest place for young people to train.

to secure a London Marathon place, we will highlight an alternative (often overseas) one for members to target. When not marathon training the members compete in two monthly in house competitions, and train for various challenges. The winter months are dominated by two cross country leagues that all members can, and many do, compete in. We welcome people of all abilities who want to run and if you want to improve, we will help you. The membership at the club is ÂŁ40 per year. This includes use of changing facilities at the Princes Park, affiliation fees with England Athletics, entry fees to the crosscountry league races as well as the national and regional championships. We hold a number of social events each year culminating with our annual prize giving ball at Christmas.

The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6.50pm at Princes Park and from there we run to where the training will take place. In the autumn and winter training is carried out mainly on the pavements around the towns. In the spring and summer, we use the numerous parks, open spaces and trails around the borough. There is also a club meet on a Sunday; sometimes a race, but mainly a social run either locally, or a little further afield. Dartford Road Runners has about 150 members with almost a 50/50 split of male and female members. The age range is from early 20s to mid-70s. Training sessions are about 45 minutes and are mainly time rather than distance based. This means that irrespective of abilities all members start and finish the training together. Many people join the club as they want to run a marathon especially the London Marathon. To help and encourage them our training from January is always geared towards endurance and specifically marathon training. As it is difficult

Dartford Road Runners is very involved with local running and our members take the lead with organising Dartford Heath parkrun. We also organise a three race Wednesday evening series in Joydens Wood in the summer and a 10k road race on August Bank Holiday Monday from Princes Park. These events are open to the public to enter. As an Architect I am interested in the local context of our towns, villages and cities and how these places have developed over time. Having come across some wonderful old postcards and images of our local towns and parishes on a Facebook page I thought it would be really interesting to take a photograph from exactly the same viewpoint but from our current time in history in relation to the original images from around the early 1900s. What was your theatre highlight this April? Maybe it was Jodie Prenger being hilariously awful as nightmare host Beverly in the classic 70s comedy Abigail’s Party. Or perhaps it was seeing the kids having a great time watching Igglepiggle and friends at In The Night Garden. Quite possibly it was enjoying the always brilliant DAODS do their thing in their production of the legendary musical Oliver! One thing’s for sure - there have been a lot of great moments over the past few weeks, with plenty to entertain audiences of all ages. As for May, it looks set to be a great month for young theatregoers. First up, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Zog hits the stage (3rd-6th), adapted by Mike Shepherd with folk music by award-winning actor and musician Johnny Flynn (recently on stage himself alongside Kit Harington in the West End). Zog is the story of an overenthusiastic dragon, who just wants to win a golden star at school - and it promises to be lots of fun for the whole family.
