Justice for George By Gareth Johnson MP

It has now been more than two years since Dartfordian, George Low, was murdered in Cyprus. In that time no one has ever been brought to justice for his murder and the people who committed this horrendous crime are still free to go about their daily lives. It was because of this huge injustice and the lack of progress with the investigation, I decided to travel to Cyprus in a quest to find answers about the murder of my young constituent, who was just 22 when he was brutally killed in an unprovoked attack in Ayia Napa. George was stabbed to death in the resort town on the final day of his holiday in August 2016. He was with his school friend Ben Barker, who was stabbed but survived the attack. During my two day visit in Se p te m b e r to try and push for more action in finding George’s killers, I met Government officials in the north and south and the police, as well George’s friends, some of whom were there on that tragic night. George was a really popular young man with a large circle of friends who thought the world of him. Having grown up in Dartford, he started his school life at Langafel C of E Primary School and went to High School at Longfield Academy. It was at school he met Ben and this was where he was given the nickname ‘Gorgeous George’.

At Acorn Dartford Estate Agents, where he worked, his hard work earned him the employee of the month. And, like many young men, he had a love of football and had played for three local teams over the years. George was murdered in Cyprus, whilst visiting a place he had worked for a couple of summer seasons and was due to head home the very next day and to go back to work at the estate agents. George was a very popular person who had his whole life ahead of him. For George’s family, the last two years have been a living nightmare. They lost their son in the prime of his life to an unprovoked, vicious attack, but in addition to this they have had to witness the men, who are believed to have carried out this murder, walk away scot-free. They remain devastated by their loss. Since my return I have met with George’s family and they are heartened by the progress that has been made, but aware of the hurdles left to come. A petition on Change. org calling for justice for George has gained more than 10,000 signatures adding to pressure on the British Government to ensure this attack remains on the top of the political agenda. The people who killed George did so in a premeditated manner and they need to face justice. We have made some progress but the bitterness between the north and south of Cyprus makes it difficult to resolve this case. I can’t, as the town’s MP, sit at home and just hope this case is resolved and although I am convinced the solution lies in Cyprus, I will continue in my search for answers until justice has prevailed and the people who murdered George are behind bars.

AWARD WINNING FOX ESTATES by Alyson Hall

Fox Estate Agents is an independent, multi-award winning company that is an established part of the Dartford community. Chris Fox, a Fellow of the National Association of Estate Agents, has had a passion for selling property for over forty years which gives him unprecedented experience and knowledge within the business. This brought him to the attention of BBC’s Homes Under The Hammer, of which he is a regular as a Kent expert. Chris is popular with the film crew, not just because of his exceptional knowledge but also, he manages to film in one take which makes life so much easier for everyone. Chris opened the office on Brent Lane, Dartford just over three years ago and has gone from strength to strength. From working alone initially, there are now three other members of staff who all have the same values and ethos when it comes to the company. Customer Service is King at Fox Estate Agents and everyone strives to give the clients an unrivalled, stress free, personal experience when it comes to buying or selling through Fox Estates. Most of our sales come through word of mouth but we are increasingly being chosen because of the over seventy, five-star Google reviews that we are all rightly proud of. The Dartford Community is very important to all of us at Fox Estate Agents. The older members of staff remember the Tesco fiasco and know that now, even more so, how important it is to keep things local whether it’s employing local people or using local businesses. This enhances the community and gives Dartford’s young people a chance to stay within the local area for jobs and housing.

and health needs and as the charity isn’t centrally funded, every penny makes a difference. We are all profoundly humbled by the staff’s dedication and care they give to the children and their families. We also support local schools and businesses and Chris is an avid supporter of Dartford Football Club. In September, we were thrilled that Christine French won the Exceptional Skills Award at the Dartford Business Awards and we also received a commendation for the Happy to Come to Work Award. Last year, we won The Best Owner of a Business Award so two consecutive wins, a commendation and a Dartford Quality Business Award gave us all a fantastic reason to celebrate. We would like to extend our congratulations to all other winners and also, to Dartford Council for organising yet another fantastic evening. Our aim is to carry on providing outstanding customer service throughout the area and building our reputation as an exceptional independent Estate Agent. If you need some good free, friendly advice on property matters, call us or pop into our office on Brent Lane.

Fox Estate Agents are proud to sponsor a local charity, We Are Beams, which supports around three hundred and fifty children, young people and their families. These children and young people suffer from complex physical 6

LOCAL MAN LOSES 7 STONE by Kashmir Powar

Local man loses 7 stone through Dartford Borough Council’s ‘Why Weight’ programme Dennis Cuckow has lost 7 stones in weight with help from the ‘Why Weight’ management programme run by Dartford Borough Council. Dennis’ weight loss journey began 2 years ago when at 21 stone and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, his lifestyle had spiraled out of control and his general health was poor. Dennis’ big weight loss break came when a nutritionist from Kent Community Health Foundation Trust pointed him to the Council’s Why Weight programme, a healthy lifestyle club that would change his life. Dennis attended 2 sessions a week for 3 months, and under the watchful eye of personal trainers Josh Madden and Naomi Coupland the weight began to fall away. Now after two years of hard work, Dennis has achieved the two goals he originally set out for himself; his GP has confirmed he no longer has type 2 diabetes, and his weight is now at 13 stone 11 lbs, meaning he has lost an incredible 100 lbs. He recently gave thanks to all of the people and organizations who supported him, including the nutritionists, personal trainers and friends he met as he was helped along the way. 8

Dartford Borough Council Why Weight Coordinator Kashmir Powar said, “Dennis is one of those people who really inspires you with his determination to reach his goal.” Speaking about his experience, Dennis said, “The journey was sometimes rocky but I’m glad I travelled it. It’s changed my life completely, I can’t thank everyone on the programme enough.” To celebrate Dennis’ fantastic achievement, on the 2nd of August he was invited into the Mayor’s Parlor at the Dartford Borough Council Civic Centre, to be presented with a certificate by The Worshipful Mayor of Dartford David Mote. Since losing the weight, Dennis has thrown out all but one of his 3XL shirts, which he keeps as a reminder of just how far he has come. Why Weight is a free 12 week programme funded by Kent County Council Public Health and delivered by Dartford Borough Council to encourage people and give them the tools to manage their weight more effectively. The programme includes gentle exercise classes, healthy eating advice and weekly weight and waist checks as well as ongoing personal support. LIVING WITH A CHILD WITH FOOD ALLERGIES by Michelle Deogun

was a safe baguette after checking the ingredients label. Have you ever wondered what is it like living with a child or loved one that has severe food allergies? Well, keep reading and I will tell you.... My son, Archie, never showed any signs of food allergies but he went into anaphylaxis after eating scrambled eggs when he was around 7 months. He started vomiting violently moments after finishing his lunch. We knew something wasn’t right so we rushed him to Darent Valley Hospital and on the way he went unresponsive . It was the scariest few moments of my life but just as we got the hospital he started to respond and thankfully he received the help he needed.

I’m going to guess that the majority of you reading this have recently heard about the tragic events surrounding the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse who suffered a fatal allergic reaction after eating a sandwich from Pret A Manger back in 2016. The inquest into her death was held last month and the details of the circumstances surrounding her death was absolutely heart-breaking and would have frightened anyone suffering from severe food allergies. Natasha’s death was as a result of Pret A Manager not disclosing on the packaging that their baguettes contained sesame seeds, even though a specific warning about the dangers of not signposting the allergen had been given to them in the previous year. They had not broken the law but they continued to play Russian roulette with every person walking into their establishments that suffered from food allergies. Because of this decision not to disclose the allergens, Natasha suffered a fatal anaphylaxis reaction after eating (what she thought) 10

We were then referred urgently to St Thomas’ Allergy Unit where he went through various skin tests which showed he had a severe reaction to eggs, peanuts, nuts and sesame. We came away completely shell shocked after having Epi-Pen training and running through what to do if he ever went into Anaphylaxis. That day changed our lives forever and to be honest we never realised how stressful our daily life would become. We are constantly having check everything but for anyone who doesn’t know me I guess I just look like I’m just another neurotic mother!! What a lot of people, watching from the outside, don’t realise is that just one touch or ingestion of Eggs, Nuts, Peanuts or Sesame could be fatal. This is something that we have constantly got at the back of our heads, every minute of the day when we go out. We had a family member (who we thought would keep Archie safe) deliberately expose him to egg which hospitalised him at 18 months old. Archie was unable to breathe and was vomiting violently, at the time I never knew they had made scotch eggs and ate them whilst touching him at the dinner table. When I found out, I was so angry as you expect family to keep your son safe. That night, on the Willow Ward I had to hold him down so he could be nebulised every hour. At that point, I realised in order for Archie to stay safe we had to take drastic steps. Archie is now unable to see this person unsupervised and has not visited their house in over 3 years. You may (when reading this) feel it may have been over dramatic to do this but we have to trust implicitly our family and friends circle to ensure Archies safety. You will do anything to protect your children, regardless of whether they are friends or family...!

Archie has recently started at Temple Hill Primary Academy and they have been amazing regarding his allergies. They have kept in close contact with us in order to ensure that he is in a safe environment whilst in their care. He has to carry two epipens and his medication bag at all times so all staff have been trained in how to use an Epi-Pen and familiarise themselves with his Allergy Action Plan, should be come into contact with anything he is allergic to. We have also had to go through all the cupboards with the staff in the ‘Breakfast’ and ‘After School’ clubs and stick labels on everything that is “Archie Proof”. It is a quick visual for the staff to refer to but every food delivery they have, every single item ingredients need to be rechecked to ensure it is still safe for him. They have embraced this whole heartedly and this has made us feel more confident in trusting the school to keep him safe. Food shopping, now that is an absolute minefield!! You tend to stick to the same supermarket so you can just go in and know that the food you get is safe. However, every time you still need to check all the ingredients as although it was safe last time, it may not be this time. If foods advise “may contain traces of...” then we avoid these too. Generally, these are statements to cover the company making the products but there is that risk of cross contamination. We found out the hard way when Archie took a severe reaction to some noodles and when we re-checked the packaging, there was a small warning right in the far corner of the label (usually it should be directly under the ingredient listing) that was pretty much unreadable. Archie vomited constantly for 3 hours during the night and we slept on his beanbag in the bathroom as couldn’t move away from the toilet. Now, we have to read everything on the label and then my husband double checking it. We also tend to check all sides of the packaging as it seems some companies put allergen information away from the ingredients list. Eating out can be an absolute nightmare and we tend to stick to places we know are safe to eat in, they have good range of options for Archie and the staff are helpful. The joy of finding a new place to eat in is like opening a present from Santa!! Trust me, some of the experiences we have had are shocking. It is very scary to see how some people within the catering industry can be so blasé about allergies. However, we have also experienced amazing customer service in other places which we then tend to go back to again.

what they are making and then make exactly same but safe for Archie so he doesn’t feel left out) or we liaise directly with the caterers as it takes the pressure of the other child’s parents. If in doubt, we just take our own food, its safer and less stress all round. I remember Archie came running up at a party with a half eaten kinder egg in his hand. He was so proud that he had it and said it was yummy. I went into panic mode as some of these have hazelnuts in them and the list of ingredients was ripped off. It was the scariest few minutes of my life, the mother was so apologetic but thinking back....if it was me and my kid never had a food allergy I’d never think twice about offering a child a sweet etc. It was fine but it just takes one incident like that which could result in anaphylaxis. So, the next time you are somewhere and think of offering a child a sweet, food etc just take a step back and remember...this child could have severe food allergies that you may not be aware of. Never take the risk, find the parent and ask them first. Archie was last tested for allergies when he was 3 years old and because his reactions were increasing the hospital decided not to test him again until he is 6-7 years old. The saying “Oh they will grow out of it” isn’t technically true and there is a possibility he will have these allergies for the rest of his life. However, we just hope that the allergic reactions start to subside in the next few years but until he is retested we just have to keep avoiding the allergens he reacts to. I really hope this article gives an insight as to what it is like to live with food allergies. Natasha’s death scares the hell out of me because when we go out for something to eat, food shopping etc we are putting our trust in the companies to DISCLOSE all ingredients so we can make an informed decision to buy their food. She trusted them and she paid with her life. For more information about living with food allergies please feel free to check out Allergy UK https://www. allergyuk.org/ they are a leading national charity providing support, advice and information for those living with allergic disease.. They have been amazing in supporting us through our journey so far with Archie. Michelle x

Birthday Parties etc can be stressful so we tend to either bring our own food if the parent is not 100% sure, especially if they are doing their own catering (we ask www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

BIP BOP BLOG by Charlotte Wise A Big Thank You Hi DL Readers! October’s magazine went to print before I could write about the Dartford Family Expo so I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who came along.

classes provide taster sessions, appearances by Princess Belle and Cinderella, informative speakers, charities and soft play to name but a few of the exciting businesses our local area has to offer For those who weren’t aware, the Dartford Family Expo 2018 was a little project that myself and Michelle Deogun from Bumps, Bubbas and Beyond organised at Dartford Football Club. It was a free event for expectant parents and parents of babies and toddlers showcasing all the amenities and support available in the Dartford area and I’m pleased to say it was a great success.

The feedback we have received from the event so far has been hugely positive and I’m incredibly humbled that we could help people find the advice and support they needed to make their parenting journey that little bit easier. Which leads me on to the big question…. Would you like to see another Dartford Family Expo next year? Get in touch and let me know!

We owe a big thank you to Dartford Living, Wisdom Estate Agents and Dartford Big Local for sponsoring the event. Without them it quite frankly would not have been possible.

And so I wish you a wonderful November preparing and shopping for (dare I say it) Christmas! Don’t forget to shop local and support all the lovely small businesses Dartford has to offer this year.

If you missed it, we had an array of baby and toddler

Until next time Charlotte x

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS by Local Resident, Jane Stevenson

SANDY TOES I’ve just spent a very restful week on the Isle of Wight. The OH and I rented a converted boathouse on the beach and did pretty much anything we wanted, whether that was tooling around the island looking at things, enjoying a pub lunch or sitting on the terrace drinking tea and reading. The weather was warm and sunny, and the island itself was winding down from the summer season. There is something very therapeutic walking along a beach doing nothing. There is no time limit to adhere to. The sea becomes a musical accompaniment to the walk, every rock pool becomes a micro-world to be discovered. The thrill of finding a piece of coloured glass, or a pretty coloured pebble assumes an importance that overshadows Brexit! I chose to go ‘ghost’ for that week. No social media and extremely limited phone calls (mainly to see how Eldest Offspring was doing with the animals). It gave me the opportunity to think things through, to re-energise myself without the pressure of actually having to respond to anyone. I’ve come back with a plan, some goals – the achievable kind – and a frame of mind which I hope will help me take more responsibility for my wellbeing. I’m lucky enough to have the time to look after me now – and I plan to do the best I can. Fun packed holidays abroad are fine. Done them, do them and love them. This time, I needed the solitude of a quiet English resort at the end of the season. It was wonderful. THE BLACK DOG Returning from holiday it seems the media is full of mental health issues, including initiatives and stories on how to work through them. There is a huge gap in services provided and the numbers who need them, mainly due to cuts in the NHS. It’s old news here at the Towers; I pay little attention to them simply because I’ve been at the mercy of this ever

diminishing branch of care for many years. I was diagnosed with depression in my late teens (sometime last century for younger readers). There was a small number of drugs used, little in the way of therapies and almost no understanding by the general public. That old saying ‘pull yourself together’ was common, and families seldom spoke of a member who was a bit ‘odd’. I was bounced from psychiatrist to psychotherapist with little explanation as to what I could expect or indeed, what was actually wrong. All I knew was that it was deeper than just having an off day. I frequently cried my eyes out in the ladies restroom at work, my appearance began to suffer as well as my general attitude and health. However, I was one of the lucky ones. An old time GP, based in a crumbling building in Lowfield Street, took the time to listen and referred me to the long gone Joyce Green Hospital where I got the treatment I needed. I’ve had periods of depression on and off for many years – I learned it is a longstanding family problem. Something that was never mentioned before. Thankfully medications changed, some worked some don’t, and new therapies are introduced. but the positive side is that the overall picture is much better than it was in the 1970s. It needs to improve even more. People must talk about anxiety and depression, to get it out in the open. It’s not a disease, you can’t catch it, or infect anyone. It is a rotten, draining way to live though, and you can’t tell by looking at someone if they are suffering from it. Be aware; your best friend, a work colleague or that nice lady on the checkout might be dancing with the devil. A kind word is sometimes the best medicine of all and costs nothing. I’ll leave you with that thought. Enjoy the Season – see you next month Bromley Barbershop Harmony Club INVITATION

TRAVEL NEWS by Tim Harden

Your local travel agency is now award-winning We had an extremely exciting month, with two award nights to attend in the same week! Firstly, we were shortlisted for the ‘High Street Agent of the Year’ at the TTG Travel Awards. The evening was a sparkling black-tie event hosted by Alan Carr at the Lyceum Theatre, with the after-party at the Savoy. Although we were not the eventual winner, we were extremely proud to be in the final eight selected from agents across the country. Then three days later we were over the moon to receive the ‘Shop of the Year’ Award at the Dartford Business Awards. The evening was a lot of fun, held at Bluewater and featuring performances by Twist & Pulse and Che Chesterman. To receive such recognition within our first year has made us very proud. We recently enjoyed celebrating the anniversary of our shop opening, and the support we have received from the community has been very welcome and greatly appreciated.

World’s longest flight takes off On the 12th October Singapore Airlines (SIA) overtook Qantas & Qatar for having the longest non-stop commercial flight. The flight landed in New York, ending a journey from Singapore of more than 15,000km in 17 hours and 52 minutes. The brand-new Airbus plane that SIA is using has been configured to seat 161 passengers in all - 67 business passengers and 94 premium economy passengers. The record was recently held by Qatar airlines for it’s Doha-Auckland route, and Qantas for it’s London-Perth flight. The new generation of the A350-900 ULR (ultra long range) aircraft are permitting longer distances to be achieved through more efficient aircraft design. 18

Primera Ceases Trading The failure comes almost a year after Monarch called in administrators and came three months after flights from Birmingham to New York and Toronto were suspended. Primera Air was not covered by the Civil Aviation Authority’s Atol Protection scheme which only covers passengers booked on a package holiday. This means only passengers who booked directly with the carrier with a credit, charge or debit card may be able to make a claim against their card provider. Affected passengers may also be able to make a claim against their travel insurer. But those due to travel with the airline and wanting to obtain a refund for unused tickets will need to contact the airline directly. “Passengers who have travelled will need to make their own arrangements to return home,” the CAA confirmed. “They should contact their travel insurer or travel agent for assistance.” The airline, which has been operating for 14 years and had a fleet of 15 aircraft, confirmed that it had ceased operations and said “unforeseen misfortunate events” in the last two years had led to it falling into administration. A statement posted on its UK website said: “With a great regret we must inform you that Primera Air will cease all operations on the midnight of October 1, 2018 and enter

administration process, after 14 years of operations. Royal-class ship name Princess Cruises has revealed its fifth Royal-class ship

will be named Enchanted Princess. Due to launch on 15th June 2020, Enchanted Princess will operate European voyages and will be a sister ship to Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Majestic Princess and Sky Princess. Enchanted Princess’ maiden season sailings will be available to book from 8th November this year. Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises’ president, said: “The name Enchanted Princess is captivating and conveys the elegance and grace of our new ship which will introduce more travellers to the pleasures and value of cruising. We are certain Enchanted Princess will exceed the expectations of our guests, ensuring they have the most memorable cruise.”

BLUEWATER SETS GOLD STANDARD Bluewater has been awarded gold status and a business landscape award by The South & South East Britain in Bloom Awards for its beautiful parkland spanning over 50 acres and featuring stunning lakes and Nature Trail. The 2018 awards saw nearly 300 entries from Community Gardening Groups, Parks & Greenspaces, Villages, Towns & Cities and Parishes in Bloom. RECIPE - CHRISTMAS CAKE by Debbie Dickinson

‘As You Like It’ Christmas Cake. You may have realised by now that I love starting with a basic recipe and adjusting it to your own personal taste. So this month I’m sharing my basic Christmas cake for you to do just that! You will need: - 600g mixed dried fruit – this could be a ready mixed bag, or any combination of sultanas, raisins, currants, glace cherries. You can also include mixed peel and orange/lemon zest if you like. - 50ml soaking liquid. (optional) This could be alcohol – any that you fancy! I tried a Black Spiced Rum for this article and it’s delicious! You could use any rum/brandy/ or try something more unusual – an orange liqueur perhaps? Or, if you prefer, you could use Orange juice. - 200g Plain Flour - 200g Brown Sugar (the darker the sugar the more intense the flavour of the cake) - 200g Butter or Margarine - 3 Eggs - 1tsp Mixed Spice (you could add a bit extra of any flavours you love – nutmeg, cinnamon etc) What to do: Line a 6” round cake tin with greaseproof paper. Put your fruit in a bowl and pour over your soaking liquid (if using) and mix well. Cover and leave for a couple of hours or

overnight if you can. Cream together your softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Don’t forget to keep scraping down the sides of your bowl to ensure everything’s nicely mixed! Add the eggs one at a time, together with a spoonful of flour each time to help it combine. Continue until all eggs are added and nicely mixed. Add the rest of the flour gradually and the spices and stir until completed mixed. Add the fruit mixture, complete with any juices that may not have completely soaked in. Tip gently into your lined tin and bake at 150°C (130°C Fan/300F/Gas mark 2) for between 1.5 and 2 hours. Test by inserting a skewer into the cake – the cake is ready if the skewer comes out dry and clean. Allow to cool completely in the tin. To decorate, brush your cake with warm apricot jam and cover with a layer of rolled marzipan. Leave overnight, then brush with a little cool, boiled water and cover with rolled sugarpaste. Allow a day or 2 for the sugarpaste to harden, then let the kids decorate with edible pens. Enjoy xx

SANTA’S SACK IS EMPTY by Justin Scrutton

For the last two years, we have had generous funding from a Church to provide presents for Santa to give these children aged 0-8. This year the funding isn’t in place, leaving Santa’s sack empty.

The two charities Santa will be visiting are Little Buddies - which deals with special needs children, and HomeStart - for underprivileged families in the Dartford area. For those of you that don’t know, I have been their Santa during this time, and it is just so rewarding!

We are looking to get as close to the £1000 target, to allow around £7-8 as an average spend, per child. The presents are bought with each child in mind, so these gifts are specially chosen for each individual child.

Santa even has his own special Grotto, where the children can meet him and get a photo. There is plenty to eat and even a DJ who really gets the children excited for that special moment when Santa comes in, ringing his bell. Ho Ho Ho! 26

These charities are close to my heart, as I can really see the difference it makes to the children.

Please take the time to make a donation, any amount would be so gratefully received, with every penny bringing a smile to a child’s face!

MONEY ADVICE by CAP

Cheap and still cheerful: ten tips for doing Christmas on a budget Across the UK, streets and supermarkets are already starting to fill up with people preparing for another Christmas. But before you throw on your thermals and head out to the shops, stop for a minute and ask yourself, ‘Do I need to buy it or do I want to buy it?’ Last year, UK families spent an average of well over £800 on Christmas. That’s a whole lot of dosh to be spending on just one of 365 days! With this in mind, we’ve put together our top ten tips for a cheap but still totally cheerful Christmas. The most important thing is to know what you can afford and to stick to it! Once you have a budget, make a list of things you genuinely can’t do Christmas without and those you can scrap (as painful as it may be). Secondly, manage expectations. Be open and honest with the people around you about your situation. Explain to your children that things are tight this year and you’re going to have to do things a little differently. Ask your colleagues to do a Secret Santa instead of buying for everybody. Club together with family for more expensive gifts. Shop around. We’re creatures of habit, but sticking to your usual stores can leave you open to some bad deals. Compare prices online or download a free app like Idealo or PriceSpy to make sure you’re getting the most for your money. Make your own gifts. A quick search online will uncover loads of guides for making and baking your own gifts. This is a great way to save cash and a wonderful opportunity to get your kids involved in some arts and crafts too.

WEBSITE: www.capuk.org TELEPHONE: 0800 328 0006 Share the cost. Paying for an entire Christmas dinner is rarely cheap, especially when it feels like you’re feeding the five thousand. Try asking your guests to chip in by each bringing an item. Just be sure to tell everyone what time to arrive or you could end up without some key bits on the table for Christmas dinner! Give your time instead of a physical gift. Offer to babysit one evening to give a friend some time off. Do the dusting for an elderly relative. Spend a few hours with someone who doesn’t get out much. These are just suggestions – you know the people in your life and what will mean something to them. The main thing to remember is that a great gift doesn’t have to be material. Never underestimate the power of your time! See what’s on at your local church. Most have a variety of events going on over the festive period, including carol services, nativity plays and community get-togethers. It’s a great way to get out of the house, relax during a busy season and keep the kids occupied – and usually it doesn’t cost a thing. Start saving. It’s never too late. Whether it’s putting your loose change in a jar every day or building up supermarket loyalty points, it all adds up. If not for this year, it’s always worth planning ahead for next Christmas. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity with over 600 services across the country. Locally in Dartford and the surrounding area, CAP offer debt counselling and money management courses. Visit capuk.org to find out more.

Celebrate Christmas after Christmas. Many retailers bump up their prices in the run-up to Christmas and then drop them afterwards in the sales. Take advantage of this by having a small do on the 25th and save the big celebrations for when it’s more affordable. Fill your freezer when it’s cheap. Keep an eye out for supermarkets selling off food at lower prices when it’s near the sell-by date. Stick it in the freezer ready for Chrimbo.

SPORTS NEWS Bav’s Sporting Comment

Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael, has won the Formula 3 European title with a race to spare. Schumacher’s title comes a year after he placed 12th overall in his debut F3 season and he is tipped to follow in his father’s footsteps into F1. No doubt that Mick has and will have plenty of cynics, accusing him of receiving preferential treatment on his way to current achievements, and getting a leg-up in the future as well. However, I believe that would be a little unfair, as he won on his second season… get yourself behind the wheel of those cars and see how you do if there was millions still behind you. No doubt he will get a few breaks others won’t, but it will be up to him to make the most of them. I wish him the best of luck.

CENTRAL PARK ATHLETICS By Richard Danston

The club make good use of the surrounding Central Park and the local streets as well as the track so that members can experience running on all terrains. Our junior members are inducted into the Swifts who train on a Sunday morning from 10am to 11am, Monday evening 6pm to 7pm and Wednesday evening from 5pm to 6pm. Increasing numbers of the Swifts, however, are now regularly joining in with the adults on Wednesdays at 7pm as they are progressing so well! Whatever your experience or ability there will be fellow runners of a similar level who will take you under their wing and encourage your development. Advice and coaching is always freely available to those that want or need it.

Central Park Athletics was first affiliated to England Athletics in November 2017. It has always been a club that encourages people of all ages and abilities to participate in athletics and strives to help those people to be the best that they can be. Less than a year after affiliation, Central Park Athletics now boasts almost 200 members with ages ranging from 4 to 70+ people from all backgrounds united by one similar interest. The camaraderie within the club is second to none, its members are just as happy when a teammate performs well as they are when they set a new PB themselves. Everyone who takes part in the weekly training sessions (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm) have noticed improvement in both their techniques and performances and many new members join through word of mouth. Central Park Athletics are great advocates of parkrun which is how many of its members first got into running. Every weekend around 60 members take part in either parkrun or junior parkrun. Many runners have since gone onto entering 10k events, half marathons or marathons. Although the club did not enter into competitive track and field this season, some of its runners chose to enter some open events and County championships. Club records and personal bests were achieved by numerous runners and the icing on the cake were the two gold medals and one bronze at County level. The potential of the club is there for all to see and the determination to build on the success so far will no doubt lead to a very bright 2019. Further new members are always welcome. All relevant information can be found on our Facebook page or at www.centralparkathletics.co.uk. Reduced membership prices are currently ÂŁ38 for adults and ÂŁ32 for children under 18 which will allow you to attend as many sessions as you like between now and 31 March 2019. We offer all potential new members their first session free of charge.

DOES IT MATTER WHEN YOU EAT? By Mark Broadbent There’s much confusion around what, when and how you should eat to be healthy, lose weight, build muscle etc. But is it really that important? Does it really matter that much? We’ll focus here on weight loss. While not all calories are the same, and it’s obvious that 2,000 calories from fresh vegetables is NOT the same as 2,000 calories from chocolate bars, simple weight loss/ gain does depend on calorie consumption. If you want to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume; there’s no getting around this. However, when you eat those calories isn’t as important as you may think. Before or after a workout. In the morning or evening. Nothing before bed. Fasting. It all comes down to overall energy balance. At the end of the week/month/year, you’ve either consumed more calories than you’ve burned, or you’ve consumed less than you’ve burned (or, against the odds, consumed exactly the same number of calories as you’ve burned). This excess or deficit is what will dictate your weight loss or gain. Whilst I don’t condone starving yourself and then binge eating, the total number will be the decider (this is why many people following silly diets actually get results, because they follow this yo-yo pattern of over/undereating to end up in an overall calorie deficit). Whether you eat those calories in the morning, afternoon, evening or middle of the night, the total calories in vs calories out will dictate your weight and when you eat those calories doesn’t matter. If you’re more advanced in your training or are trying to manipulate that last couple of percent bodyfat, then meal timings can have an effect, and for muscle gain or sports, you can manipulate meal timings for optimum performance and muscle growth and repair; but for the average, non-athlete, who is trying to lose some bodyfat to get to “normal” levels (i.e. just get a bit leaner – not aiming for figure-model looks right now) then just hitting your overall calorie goal is absolutely fine, and

the nuances of meal timings will likely have very little impact on your efforts at this stage. I would always recommend eating 3-4 meals a day (more is unnecessary unless you’re trying to gain a lot of mass and can’t physically eat enough in 3-4 meals). This is realistic and achievable for nearly everyone, and will ensure more steady energy levels throughout the day. Any less than this and you’ll likely fall victim to binges and snacking between meals, and we all know how bad our food choices can be when we’re hungry! If you can spread your daily calorie target evenly across 4 meals, you should feel better, crave less junk, and have no problem hitting your targets and reaching your target weight. Stuffing your face in the morning and then starving yourself in the evening won’t change the numbers. Also, if you’re someone who struggles to eat a lot in the morning, then you can just eat what you can (though try to eat something) for breakfast and then spread the rest of your calories across the remaining 3 meals. You don’t need to panic that you’re doing it wrong if you struggle to eat much at breakfast! It should go without saying that if you can choose “healthier” options for your meals, it will help a great deal with your health profile (this goes back to the 2,000 calories from veg vs 2,000 calories from chocolate point I mentioned earlier), and whilst manipulating your macro-nutrients will have an effect on the results, it will still come down to calories. How many grams of protein, carbs, fats you should aim for is for another time, but for now, hit your calorie targets with the healthiest foods you can and you should start to see some results. If you’re interested in online or in-home Personal Training, nutrition advice or fitness classes around Dartford go to www.DartfordBootcamps.com for more information. See you there!

THEATRE ROUNDUP By Liz Dyer

It’s getting more and more difficult to ignore the inconvenient truth that Christmas is almost here again… but before panto season gets well and truly underway (have you got your tickets yet?), let’s have a quick look back at last month’s entertainment, and check out what’s coming up at the theatre this November. We kicked off October in style with the brilliant Dirty Dancing - always a favourite, and it never lets us down. The same could be said for our fantastic local legends DAODS, who wowed the Orchard once again with their production of Top Hat. They were followed swiftly by the Beatles (sort of) in Let It Be, the reunion gig we never got to see, before the month came to a poignant close with Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, commemorating 100 years since the end of World War 1. As for this month… well Halloween might be in October, but the thrills and chills continue into November this year, with Edgar Wallace’s The Case of the Frightened Lady (5th-10th). John Partridge - last seen on the Orchard stage in La Cage Aux Folles - leads an impressive cast of familiar faces in this shocking murder mystery from the Classic Thriller Company. They’re no strangers to Dartford, and no doubt their latest visit will once again keep us guessing to the end. On a somewhat lighter note, get ready to rock out to

44

some classic anthems as Rock of Ages comes to town (20th-24th). Starring Kevin Kennedy and Zoe Birkett (sadly Strictly favourite Kevin Clifton isn’t joining the cast until later in the tour - he’s a bit busy at the moment, I guess), this LA love story features over 25 hits including We Built This City, The Final Countdown, Here I Go Again, Can’t Fight this Feeling and I Want To Know What Love Is. Younger theatregoers have a treat to look forward to as well - Stickman is back (26th-27th)! The beloved story from the ever popular Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler returns, with a cast of three actors, brilliant puppetry and live music. Will Stick Man ever make it back to the family tree? There’s only one way to find out! And that’s not all we have coming up - check out the Orchard’s website for full listings of this month’s fantastic music, comedy and entertainment. There really is something for everyone, so grab your tickets before they go, and call it an early Christmas present for yourself…
