MIKE’S INSPIRATION AND RECOVERY WITH DARTFORD PARKRUN BY RICHEY ESTCOURT & MIKE CHARMAN

and undertook the NHS Couch-to-5k course, as well as the strength and flexibility programme. The two new avenues of fitness and volunteering which opened in Mike’s life converged neatly at Dartford parkrun, where he became a regular attendee, and well-known for his outgoing and positive character. During this time, he also began regular sessions in mindfulness, which have reinforced his lifelong positive attitude and interest in wellbeing, and ‘living in the moment’. Mike’s life changed in the summer of 2019 when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, and after initial surgery, subsequently began courses of radio and chemotherapy. After just six weeks away from his regular place in Central Park, he returned to parkrun in July and characteristically volunteered as course marshal to ensure the event went properly ahead. After recovering from surgery, Mike completed his first 5km parkrun as part of his recovery.

Mike Charman has been a regular at Dartford parkrun since its very beginning. He joined us for our second event on August 2nd 2014, and again the following week, and has joined us again and again for a further 150 Saturday mornings so far. When the weekends have taken him away from his home area, he has managed to keep up the Saturday morning parkrun routine by completing parkruns in Margate, Lincoln, Worcester and Leicester. Additionally, over the past five years, he has been keen to support the Dartford event and other runners by taking turns volunteering at the event, and broadening his own skills set in the process.

In Mike’s words: “Since my brain tumour diagnosis and treatment, running and volunteering at Dartford parkrun has provided an invaluable return to ‘normal’ life. The health benefits of physical activity help maintain stability during the ups and downs of treatment, as well as a giving me a huge sense of accomplishment for my mental wellbeing. I really appreciate the fantastic support of the whole parkrun community - the runners, marshals and organisers who not only look out for me, but also offer to walk or jog around with me according to how I feel. Since I began my recovery, it has become clearer to me how many runners and other people are living with difficult conditions and I empathise with them as they do with me”.

Towards the end of his fifties, Mike decided to supplement his working career as a designer with a range of voluntary work in the local area and became involved with the Dartford & Crayford Restoration Trust and Dartford Litterpickers. He was also inspired by the 2012 Olympics 6

MOT DO’S AND DON’TS BY ORCHARD GARAGE

Can you imagine a time when an MOT was only needed when a car was a decade old?! That’s how it was in the old days! The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test has come a long way since it was first introduced in 1960. Back then, the test simply covered brakes, lights and steering and unbelievably, was not compulsory until a vehicle was ten years old – something that makes us at Orchard Garage shudder! Fortunately, MOTs (which still retain the acronym years after the organisation finished) today are far more thorough and are legally required much sooner, when a vehicle reaches three years of age. But the constant revisions and updates to the test mean that many drivers get their gear sticks in a twist about what the requirements are. So, allow us to run you through some common dos and don’ts of your car’s annual health check: • Do make sure your car is clean and tidy, inside and out. A tester can refuse to inspect a vehicle that is dirty or cluttered. We don’t expect to be able to check our hair in the hub caps but if your car is beginning to resemble a mobile skip, you might want to give it the once-over first. After all, if someone made you work in that environment, you’d probably refuse too! • Don’t arrive with an empty tank or you could be turned away. An emissions check is an important part of the test - pretty tricky when there’s no fuel to produce them! • Do avoid failing due to something simple and inexpensive by making sure you check bulbs, wiper blades, plus tyre condition and pressure. • Don’t assume that an MOT gives you carte blanche to neglect your car for the rest of the year. The test confirms your vehicle met the legal safety and environmental standards at the time it was tested. It is not a licence to drive around with rotting suspensions, loose bolts, or worse, torn seatbelts knotted together…like these drivers on the DVSA MOT Horror Stories blog…

• Do make life easier for yourself by making sure we have your details – because we send you a reminder when your MOT is due! Because nothing gets the blood pumping quite like suddenly remembering your MOT expired 3 months ago as you whizz past a police car on the M25… • Don’t be tempted to drive your car with an expired MOT. Your insurance will be invalid, and you could be fined up to £1,000. You may book your test a month before it expires at the earliest. However, the only time you may legally drive without an MOT is if you are taking your vehicle to a garage for a pre-booked test. • Do check your horn is working. The more, shall we say, animated motorists among us may be well aware if their car’s horn is fully functioning. But those of us who are a little more serene behind the wheel will likely not have sounded it for some time and therefore, can’t be sure that it’s working. A faulty horn will result in a fail. So, get tooting! • Don’t mistake an MOT for a service. An MOT does not cover the engine, clutch or gearbox. Servicing is not legally required but ensures your car is performing at peak ability according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. It can be tailored, covering everything from brakes to heated steering wheels. Think of an MOT as a basic health check and a service as a spa treatment. Keeping up to date with MOT requirements can be daunting for most motorists. Thankfully, we’re your local experts, on-hand to answer any questions you have about carrying out tests on cars, vans and motorbikes running on all types of fuel. Give us a call for advice and to book in. Orchard Garage Ltd Heath Lane / Park Road – Dartford 01322 271000

DARTFORD TWINNING

GRAVELINES - FRANCE At a time when the UK is evaluating its relationship with mainland Europe it is important to remember that to help create a better understanding between communities and encourage cultural exchanges many towns are still twinned with towns on the continent. Dartford was twinned with Hanau, 25 Km from Frankfurt, 50 years ago. Then in 1991 the town was twinned with Gravelines, a typical French seaside town just south of Dunkirk and a 20-minute drive from the Calais exit of the Channel Tunnel rail link, on the A15. The Dartford Town Twinning Association organises cultural visits and will soon be travelling to Hanau to celebrate the towns’ twinning 50th anniversary. However, at the end of September the Association travelled Gravelines to Above: Gravelines Mayor Bertrand Ringot and Jón Björn help the town celebrate the its annual Fete des Islandais. Hákonarson, President of the Fjarðabyggð municipality council at the remembrance ceremony The Fete des Islandais is a weekend festival held by the people of Gravelines to remember the town’s fishing fleet, which sailed for often months at a time to fish in Icelandic waters. Whilst working on the sea around Iceland the Gravelines sailors established a strong relationship with local Icelandic communities, which looked after the men when they came ashore, built them a hospital and still maintains a cemetery for those Frenchmen who lost their lives in Icelandic waters. An important part of the annual festival, is therefore, to say thank you to the people of Iceland for caring for their menfolk whist they fished their cod filled waters. This year Dartford, led by the Deputy Mayor Cllr Rosanna Currans and Dartford Twinning Association President Pat Kelly, joined delegations from Iceland and Germany to open Above: Deputy Mayor Cllr Rosanna Currans addressing the festival, share cultural produce, make speeches, lay the delegations in French a wreath on the sea, take part in a remembrance service and join a band led parade around the town. DARTFORD TWINNING

HANAU - GERMANY This year Hanau will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its twinning with Dartford by hosting a cultural celebration in their town. The Dartford delegation to the celebration will include the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Rosanna Currans, Dartford Town Twinning Association members and student orchestras from Dartford Grammar Girls and Boys schools, who will be playing at town’s celebration concert.

As a prelude to the Hanua based celebration the town’s Twinning Association recently visited Dartford to say hello to old friends and see how the town has changed since 1969. Following a lunch in the Civic Centre the Association had a look around the town and visited Bluewater, which celebrated its own 20th Birthday this year.

Hanau is a large German town 25 km east of Frankfurt and is part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. Its station is a major railway junction and with a port on the river Main it has become an important transport centre. However, the town is known for being the birthplace of folklore and fairy tale authors - Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm.

Twinning remains a great way of creating ties and friendships between towns of different countries, whilst promoting better understanding between international communities. Despite the country’s changing relationship with Europe it is hoped that Dartford’s cultural links with Hanau will stay strong for at least another 50 years.

Hanau was Dartford’s first Twin Town and since the towns’ twinning in 1969 the ongoing cultural link has been maintained almost entirely by the Dartford Town Twinning Association. Back in the late 1960s, when considering who to twin with, Dartford and Hanau felt that both towns shared similar common issues around economic development and that Hanau’s location relative to Frankfurt closely mirrored Dartford’s relationship with London.

It welcomes the Government’s commitment to meet the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change target to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 but feels that, locally, we should aspire to act faster, and go further, to embed multiple actions across our community and local economy. Some measures may be quicker to yield results than others but the Council aspires to see the effects of climate change tackled earlier than either the 2050 national target or the 2030 date proposed by some. It commits to pursuing measures that are deliverable, measurable and practical. It will inspire and promote efforts - small and large – to address climate change throughout our local community. It notes the successful inauguration of the Leader’s crossparty Working Group on Climate Change and commits to developing this group to include informed and representative local voices. Finally, this Council sets itself the goal of making a contribution to tackling climate change to match any comparable local authority.

Dartford knows more than most about the particular challenges posed by rising traffic volumes and the impact on local air quality. We commit to increase our efforts to work with highways partners to reduce car use, resolve traffic issues in pollution hotspots and create workable, popular solutions within residential communities to prioritise pedestrians, cyclists and calmer, safer traffic. FOX ESTATES RAISING MONEY FOR LOCAL CHARITY WE ARE BEAMS By the time you read this Chris Fox, from Fox Estates, will have completed his Zafira Palma 10K run, in aid of our chosen charity, We Are Beams. Although Chris hasn’t done any serious running since he was at school, he decided he was going to take part because he truly believes that We Are Beams is a wonderful local charity. He first encountered Caroline Brinkman, head of fundraising, around four years ago at a networking event and as soon as he saw her dedication and passion for Beams, he knew that this was the charity Fox Estates was going to sponsor. Beams is a local charity that cares for approximately 350 disabled children and their families. The staff are amazing, caring people but the charity doesn’t receive any government funding so every penny raised is very gratefully received. With all this in mind, Chris will be packed off to Palma clutching sun cream and blister plasters and everyone who knows Chris, recognises that he will complete this run, even if he has to crawl the last mile! Chris Fox NEVER gives up! Who would’ve thought, four years ago when Fox Estates first opened, that Chris would be donning shorts to take part in a charity run? Everyone in the office is wholeheartedly behind him and all his friends and family are urging him on and we are all so proud of him. Go Chris, go!!!

MONEY ADVICE

by CAP

Rainy November: Five affordable ways to entertain the kids It might feel like possibilities for entertaining the kids are endless in the hot, sunny weather when it’s easier to get out and about but as soon as rain clouds emerge, that activity list disappears as abruptly as the summer! Well, here are a few great ideas to help you make the most of those rainy November days. Get creative Start collecting empty cereal boxes, bottles and loo rolls that’d normally go in the recycling bin and dig out any unused craft sets from last Christmas. Why not see who can make the best robot or get everyone to make a different instrument then ‘play’ along to your favourite tunes? Or you could make some salt dough Christmas tree decorations with your family’s names on to hang on the tree this year. If all you have is pens and paper, don’t worry! You could make your own Christmas cards for family and friends, or draw out a grid and let your kids create their own comic book story. Bring the outdoors in A bundle of cushions and sheets can soon become an exciting den, right in your living room. Get the kids to find things from around the house, or grab their favourite toys or blankets to put inside. Add a string of fairy lights. To make it even easier, simply use a small pop-up tent or a picnic blanket - relive the summer by bringing your picnic indoors.

Embrace the rain There are plenty of free or ‘pay what you can’ groups for both tots and older children, so why not see what’s on offer? Or check out the latest museum exhibitions, or head to the library and let the kids pick a whole bunch of new books to take home (or read there). If you’re feeling brave, why not just embrace the wet weather? As long as you’ve got wellies and raincoats at the ready, why not head to the park anyway and enjoy the ‘waterslides’ or jumping in puddles? Then come home, get your PJs on and snuggle up in front of the TV with some hot chocolate. Go to the movies at home Watch some favourite family movies, or grab something you haven’t seen from a local charity shop or library. Get some popcorn or snacks, draw the curtains, dim the lights, sit on some comfy chairs, beanbags or cushions and enjoy! You could even get the kids to make some movie tickets, posters or little snack boxes to ‘sell’, to recreate the whole cinema experience. It might not be hugely appealing thinking of the cold, rainy months to come, but there’s plenty to be getting up to. Hopefully, these few ideas will spark some creativity so that you can embrace the winter weather as a whole family. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity with over 600 services across the country delivering debt counselling, money management, job clubs, life skills groups, and support for people breaking habitual dependencies. Visit capuk.org to find out more.

Cook something together Kids love to help with the cooking – especially if they’re baking some treats! Get your children measuring out the ingredients, stirring the mixture, and of course licking the bowl afterwards! It can be a huge confidence boost to help create a meal or some treats for the whole family to eat. You can make lots from just a few ingredients, so why not bake some biscuits or cupcakes and let the kids decorate them?

Steve, you’re no stranger to panto. What is it that brings you back year after year? Because I’m in Eastenders, it’s like the perfect antidote. It compiles opposites so it is a complete antidote and if I wasn’t at Eastenders I wouldn’t want to do it. It’s such a lovely challenge for me.

Do you get nervous onstage? I have been but I’m comfortable with it now.

I suppose panto gives you that freedom to make mistakes because the audience are having fun and are on your side regardless. Yeah, but I don’t like it though. Nobody likes to screw up It must be refreshing to perform onstage in front of an because then you break it up for the other person as well. audience. How does it compare to screen acting? They’ve got their flow and they’re working off of you so I do It’s completely different. You go with the feedback that care a lot about trying to get it right. It is a bit forgiving if you you get. You’ve got to let the laughs roll like a wave and ride get it wrong. People don’t notice it but we do. them. I used to do market trading, and used to sell stuff, and you’ve got to react to the crowd. If you come out with the Now, this year’s production is Peter Pan. Can you tell us wrong line at the wrong time, it’s just going to go flat. You a bit about your character? get a shape of it which Andy, our great comic, is a master He’s not just Captain Hook; he’s been abused by this young at and I’m an amateur at. gentleman who cut off his arm and chucked it to the crocodile. What a liberty! It’s enough to make him hostile isn’t it. You’ve worked with Andy before. What’s your partnership like onstage and who gets the most laughs? Will you be adding your own East End twist to the character? Oh, him. That’s what he is there for. I’m the baddie but he Yes. He’ll speak a bit like me: a bit growly, a bit gruff. But I’ve gets laughs at my expense. always thought that you do take it back to the elements. He’s a handicapped man on a ship full of pirates. enjoy it but I will. I’ve noticed you’re often cast in the villainous roles. Can we expect to see you as Buttons one year, or a pantomime dame? No, it’s not going to happen. It just doesn’t work. When I was at RADA, I did all sorts of things. And I did clowning. I dressed up as a clown at my friend’s daughter’s birthday party. Kids ran screaming from the room. His daughter cried her eyes out. I emptied the room and all I did was walk in with a chef’s hat on and a big red nose. I didn’t even open my mouth or have a chance to say anything. I gathered, at that point, to stick to the villains. You’re often involved in Eastenders’ biggest storylines so your work schedule must be hectic already. How do you manage panto on top of that and find the time to squeeze rehearsals in? Have a scooter. Go to work by helicopter. Stay up late and learn lines. It’s a discipline. I’ve got time out of Eastenders but I will be learning the script for this when I’m at the show. And when I’m finishing this off, I’ll be learning the lines for Eastenders. It’s about getting up early and going to bed late and doing the homework. How many weeks of rehearsals do you get before the first performance? We start on Monday and we’ll open Friday week. The second week isn’t rehearsals because you’re doing the tech runs, which is making sure the curtain goes up at the right time and the lights come on and the crocodile waggles its tail or whatever. So, the second week is gone but I always turn up

knowing what I’m doing from day one. Second week is putting it to bed and then you’re open. What is it about this theatre that sets it apart from any other? They’ve asked me back. Every theatre has an energy; it’s what you bring to the place. It’s a really nice theatre and I had a really good time the last time I was here. Wherever we go, we have a good time. I discovered, when I first did panto, that I wasn’t sure what it was all about. Am I supposed to be funny? Am I supposed to be singing? What am I doing? I was stood outside thinking ‘what am I doing here?’ and I could hear the noise of the audience. I was nervous and then I heard the audience come out and it was a completely different change of tone. The fun. The laughter. The chit-chat. People were just having a shared experience. And that’s when I realised what I was doing. It’s a family experience for everyone with people they love. When I worked out what I was doing, that’s when I realised I wanted to do it again. I enjoyed that aspect of it, which is making people happy and having a good laugh. You don’t get that at Eastenders. The studio gate opens up, you do your scenes, you come out and you go home. Sometimes, you’re busy. I swim or it’s my dad’s birthday. You don’t always get a chance to see what you’ve done. There’s a disconnect between doing the work and the end result. With this, you do it and everyone enjoys it and you really feel that. LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS by Local Resident, Jane Stevenson BACK TO REALITY

I’ve been away recently for a rest and recharge. The first week, I spent time sitting in the sun, dipping in and out of a warm swimming pool and sampling the local food. The second week was colder but no less enjoyable, back in the UK, again resting by the sea, eating the local food and visiting several beer festivals! During that time, I watched little TV, didn’t buy any papers or magazines and took a decision to use the mobile only to check the weather. Such a break from routine and familiar surroundings does wonders for your mental and physical wellbeing. It can also help you refocus on what’s happening locally and further afield. Sometimes it can be invigorating, and other times scary. So, in my humble opinion, these are a few comments on the news and events I came back to.

THE SEASON FOR THE KIDS We are now in the run up to year end. Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas are on their way, squashed into two short months. Children overdose on sugar and excitement before the sobering date of 1/1/2020 is upon us. It is their season. They can dress up, eat totally unsuitable, but absolutely delicious sweets and marvel at the explosion of noise and colour in the skies. Then on to Christmas, where the brightly coloured paper hides toys, clothes, games and other desired items.

Yes, all three events are materialistic, expensive and transient. Yes, they can take work and planning for the adults, and yes, we should all aspire to greater things. But you know what, I don’t care. Enjoy those events, treat your kids, and each other, ooh and aah over rockets and sparklers, (taking care Brexit, still dragging on. It’s gone from the excitement of of your animals first please) and munch away on mince a new beginning for the UK to the desperate thrashing pies, and cake with a glass of prosecco. ‘Tis the season to around between politicians who have little idea of what be jolly – I’m just extending it for a few weeks. they’re doing, and no interest at all in you or I. Hopefully the whole situation will be settled by the time you read this and the UK can make the best of whatever decision Take care people is reached. In my opinion, I think we will have difficulties in the future mainly due to the stupidity and empire building of those in charge. However, we made our choice and it needs to be implemented. Now Aw Extinction Rebellion. People have been protesting for Winn ard ing! millennia against various branches of the establishment, and I while I thought those supporting ER had a good heart, I had become complacent about the environment and hadn’t fully engaged with their views. I decided to educate myself further about this group and rather wish I hadn’t: because the facts and figures behind their arguments are irrefutable, and unless we all make a concerted effort to change our way of living, we are going to see faster and deadlier climate change, loss of flora and fauna and the extinction of groups of insects and animals vital to our continued existence. I don’t expect everyone to march or engage in civil disobedience unless they feel that strongly. Just let’s look at our own choices and lifestyles and see if we can make things better. Small steps, and all that. Not rocket science, but a start. Trump’s Tweets reached new levels of confusion, and BoJo’s private life threatens to become bigger news than it should. No other comment really required.

RECIPE -

CHRISTMAS PUDDING

by Debbie Dickinson

Not long now so thought I’d offer a recipe for those of you who’d like to bake their own Christmas pudding this year. As always it’s a recipe you can adapt to your own personal tastes. YOU WILL NEED: 600g mixed fruit – made up of a 500g bag of mixed dried fruit plus your choice of additional flavours – how about dried cranberried, grated apple, candied peel, glace cherries 100ml liquid – this can be alcoholic, such as brandy/ rum/sherry/fruit liqueur/cider, or non-alcoholic such as fruit juice 100g butter 100g dark brown sugar 150g Self Raising Flour 2 Large eggs 1tsp mixed spice ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg Optional 100g nuts of your choice, chopped

Lower the pudding bowl in carefully and steam/ boil for 6 hours – checking the level of water throughout and topping up as needed. When cooked, remove from the saucepan and allow to cool. Re-move the wrapping and wrap with fresh foil/film. Store in a cool place, or freeze, until Christmas. Reheat in the microwave for 3 or 4 minutes until hot and serve with custard or delicious cream. Enjoy!

WHAT TO DO: Soak the fruit selection in your chosen liquid for a few hours (preferably overnight) until the liquid has been absorbed. Gently heat the sugar and the butter together in a saucepan until the sugar has dissolved. Pop aside to cool. Butter the inside of a 2L pudding bowl and pop a small circle of greaseproof paper in the bottom of the bowl. Add the sugar/butter mix to the fruit and stir. Add the eggs, flour and spices and mix until combined. Add nuts if using. Pour the mixture into the pudding bowl and smooth the top. Cover with a double layer of greaseproof paper, then wrap the whole bowl in foil – place a large square over the top and smooth down the sides, then repeat with a square of foil underneath, wrapping upwards. Secure in place with string tied, tightly around the rim of the bowl. Make a ‘handle’ out of sting to help lower the bowl into the saucepan for cooking. Fill a large saucepan (big enough to hold the pudding bowl) halfway with water and bring to the boil.

LOCAL FATHER AND SON GO RACING Now competing in his first season in the Junior Saloon Car Championship in his Saxo VTR How have your 2019 seasons gone so far? Simon: “This year has been a struggle from the start. With major upgrades to the truck; engine, gearbox, rear axle, the list goes on. But we’re using this as a stepping stone for next season” Simon had some bad luck and teething issues at the start of the season but as we’ve progressed through the year we are finding where we have been going wrong. We are heading into Brands Hatch (on the 2nd November) with a positive attitude after leaving Pembrey on a positive note.

Simon Cole and Archie Handy are a local father and son Archie: who are both racing drivers. Brands Hatch will be Archie 3rd ever race weekend. Simon has been racing in the British Truck Racing Archie has settled well behind the wheel of the Saxo and Championship (he also owns the Royal Oak Pub in Spital is battling well. Unfortunately, a few unlucky incidents in Street). Archie is just starting out on his motorsport career the previous race meeting. I’m looking forward to the end of season finale at Brands Hatch. and is racing in the Junior Saloon Car Championship. Dartford Living caught up with them recently to talk How does it feel to be competing on the same weekend about their 2019 seasons and their hopes for the future. at the same track? Simon: It feels great to be racing on the same weekend as Archie, How did you both start racing? it’s our local track so we will have lots of support from our Simon: Simon began his racing career with motorcross bikes, family, friends and our sponsors and their guests. We’ll leading onto racing in the clio cup and then in 2014 joining have the full team there working on both the Truck and the Saxo to ensure we send the year off on a high. the British Truck Racing Championship. He had a guest drive at the wheel of an Iveco racing truck which instantly lead to the purchase of his own 5.5T racing machine. Now racing behind the wheel of his Mercedes named ‘The Beast’ Archie: Archie has no previous behind the wheel racing experience. He has gained some valuable race knowledge from working alongside the team during his dad’s races at weekends and working at the workshop between races. “I want to race like my dad does, I’m learning from his driving style and helping at race weekends on the truck”

Archie: After years of watching my dad race at Brands Hatch I’m finally going to be racing there myself. I’ll be looking at the lap times to see who’s quicker, me or dad. What do you want to achieve in the future/goals? Simon: “The ultimate goal has got to be champion, I would love to race in the European Truck Racing Championship. Archie: “To race against my Dad and to eventually join the racing trucks and potentially touring cars.”

JASON MANFORD STARS IN CURTAINS Bloom in ‘The Producers’ and Nathan Detroit in ‘Guys and Dolls’ so I know my way around a New York accent. However, a Boston accent is a new challenge. We get to work with an accent coach, and I’ve been watching lots of videos and films set in Boston to get an ear for it. We’ve also got a few dance numbers, so I’ve been hitting the gym to prepare for that! Audiences may know you best from your TV and comedy work, but you’ve been part of many musicals over the years. What initially made you want to make the leap? Comedian and TV Star Jason Manford comes to The Orchard Theatre from Mon 25th to Sat 30th November starring in a brand-new UK Tour of the Tony Award winning musical CURTAINS. We caught up with Jason to chat about the show, and how he finds life in musical theatre compared to his roots in stand-up comedy. Firstly, can you tell us a little about “Curtains”? The show was a huge success on Broadway so it’s really exciting to be bringing this new production to the UK. It’s a comedy musical ‘whodunit?’ and I play a detective obsessed with musicals. When a murder happens in a theatre, he, along with the audience, turns up to discover who the killer is. It’s written by Kander and Ebb who wrote ‘Chicago’ and ‘Cabaret’, so the music is great and it’s a hilarious script.

What I really love about theatre, which I didn’t realise at first, was how much I enjoy working with other people. You spend so much time alone when you’re touring as a stand-up. I mean, don’t feel sorry for me, I did very well out of it, but it’s a lonely job! So, in theatre it’s lovely to be part of a cast, a family feel, which I really love. Do you prefer performing in theatre to stand up comedy, or do you find one or the other better suits you at different points in your life?

I just find that there are times when stand-up is number one, and there are times when it’s theatre. With stand-up I’m starting with a blank page – I sit down and think about what I want to tell stories and jokes about whereas with musicals somebody else is setting the parameters that I then get to explore and play in. There’s something quite exciting about that – someone saying here are the rules, a script, Did you know the show before coming on board? story, songs, and then you’ve got to use what you’ve got to collaborate with them, with what pre-exists. It’s actually I didn’t know much, but as soon as I would mention it to friends a really good discipline, and I’ve been able to use some of in theatre they would say, “That’s one of my favourite shows!”. the skills I’ve learned in theatre and translate them to how I It’s a popular musical within the theatre community and I’m perform stand-up comedy. excited that we can share this love to cities all over the UK. What was your very first experience of musical theatre, You’re playing the role of Frank Cioffi, a local detective and and when did you fall in love with it? huge musical theatre fan. What appealed to you about taking on the role? I remember being about nine or ten at school, and I don’t know how they got away with it, but they took us to see Sweeney What I love about Frank is that he’s such a sweet guy, even Todd! It was quite an experience, and I remember thinking considering he’s there to solve a murder! He loves theatre it was just brilliant. I was in every musical I could be at high but hasn’t had the chance to be on stage, and that’s not school, whether it was my year group or not I would badger dissimilar from how I started! I came from a different world, the teacher until they let me be a part of it somehow. Then coming from the stand-up comedy and television world when I got to university they didn’t have a drama society, so I and was surrounded by these hugely talented actors and actually set the drama society up at Salford University called performers, so I can relate to that a bit! There’s something ‘Almost Famous’ and that’s still going now and I get invited in him that is just fun to play with as an actor. to stuff by them all the time which is really nice! I actually also wrote a couple of musicals myself when I was at uni. How will you prepare for the role? Will you be swotting up on famous detectives and big musical theatre numbers? Do you think you’d ever want to write any musical theatre in the future? Yeah, I think so. The first thing to do is to adapt to the Boston accent. I’ve done New York a couple of times as I was Leo I’ve got a couple of things that I’m working on that I would like 34

to develop but it’s a big world to dive into and a flop is a real flop, so it’s a big risk. It’s a lot of work but I’ve got a couple of nice ideas that I might like to explore more in the future. Do you have a role you’d love to play, regardless of age or gender? Yeah, I’d like to play Jean Valjean in Les Misérables at some point! That feels like the ultimate aim. You’ve toured before with various shows, is it something you enjoy or do you find it a bit of a challenge? Both really. I love doing it, it’s what I have always known. My family do notice that I start to climb the walls after a few months off. I’m a bit like a wild child if I’m stuck in the house for too long. I couldn’t do it forever I must say, and it’s tough being away from my family. Over the course of the year I probably spend as much time at home as any other parent does, but it’s spread out differently, and in blocks of time. The kids get it and they come and see me on tour, they’ve seen most of the shows I’ve been in. You’re a busy man, but what do you like to do with any down time you get? I don’t really have down time! Even when I’m off I like writing down ideas or music – even my hobbies are similar to my work but that’s a privilege really! I suppose my real down time is hanging out with my kids, they’re a good laugh and I love it. Have you ever been given a piece of advice, or some words of wisdom that have stuck with you? I’ve had quite a bit actually over the years! I remember Peter Kay telling me when I first started stand-up that the rest

of the country is working a 40-hour week at least, so just because you work in show business why should you be any different? As a comic if you wanted to you could probably get away with working for 20-minutes a night, four nights a week but he was a real inspiration to get me to say okay what am I doing with the rest of my time? He made me write a lot more and do a lot more. I also remember doing ‘Sweeney Todd’ and feeling really nervous around these incredible singers, dancers and actors and I said to Michael Ball that I feel like I’m winging it, that I’m on that TV show ‘Faking It’, and he said to me, “Darling, we’re all on Faking It” which I thought was good advice as it reassured me we are all sort of winging it to a point! My Dad always used to say to me “Your horizon should become your middle distance” so that you aim for things, and when you get there you head on to the next thing. That’s a great piece of advice. Finally, what can audiences expect when they come and see ‘Curtains’? They can expect great music from the team behind ‘Cabaret’ and ‘Chicago’, a wonderful and talented cast, hilarious comedy and you’ll be questioning right the way through to the end, whodunit?! WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL TRAINING?

By Mark Broadbent

So, you’ve got a house full of sweets after Halloween, and Christmas is just around the corner – that means nights out, food, drink, and busy, busy, busy. How are you going to even maintain your waistline, let alone shrink it?!

You don’t have to eat everything that’s on offer. You don’t have to drink all night, or even at all! If you could have HALF the amount of alcohol, you’ll be doing well. If you can skip dessert or just have something small, great. If you can put off every You want to look good but the odds are against you (or so snack, and every alcoholic drink for just a little while, you’ll you think). have less overall. The keys to surviving December are preparation and This isn’t a case of going without, it’s a case of putting off moderation. the bad stuff, at least for a little while (and maybe, if you’ve managed to put it off for a while, you could go without…? Start a healthy nutrition plan as soon as possible (i.e. RIGHT Or just put it off a bit longer again?) NOW… your next meal!) and set yourself a training schedule… and STICK TO IT. These are simple, easy things to incorporate that will add up to saving you a huge number of calories over the course 3-4 workouts a week along with a sensible eating plan is of the month. sufficient for most people, and if you spend this time working hard and doing the right things, you’ll see results before Perhaps most important of all, is to remain consistent with December even comes around. your training and healthy eating outside of the parties. If you’ve read any of my other articles, you’ll know I advocate spending your training time lifting weights, rather than just sitting on an exercise bike or treadmill. Resistance over cardio all the way. If you want to know why, read the other articles, but for now, unless you’re in training for a run/swim/bike ride etc., focus on resistance work.

Even if you know you’re going to have a blow-out in the evening, it doesn’t mean the whole day leading up to it is a write-off – eat as healthily as you can right up to the party, use the tips just mentioned at the party, and then get right back on it the next day. The whole week/weekend isn’t written off because of one bad night.

Nutrition-wise, be strong. Plan ahead and plan what you’ll eat. Shop for those ingredients and avoid buying any extra “bad” stuff. That way you won’t be caught out with nothing planned and only a cupboard full of junk to eat. You don’t have to do anything crazy here – just focus on eating 3-4 healthy meals per day. Do this and you’ll naturally crave less junk, and being prepared with food to eat will stop unplanned sins from happening.

If you can minimise the damage over December, and stay consistent with your training and nutrition (aside from a few nights out), then you’ll be set to hit the ground running in January too, when everyone else is just starting and struggling you’ll be way ahead of them and set to have your best January yet in terms of fitness and weight loss goals. So, get a plan together now and start working on it right away. Make November a good month, aim to just maintain things through December, then attack it in January.

Avoid extreme diets or cutting lots of calories. A small calorie deficit (100-300 calories) along with increased exercise will be plenty to get great results and keep you from starving. Try and plan ahead with the rest of your life too – get as much of your Christmas shopping done early, so you have more time in December to train. Skipping workouts in December because you have to go shopping is nothing more than an excuse – get ahead of it and stop it in its tracks!

Once you have a plan in place, you can relax a bit and enjoy this time of year instead of getting stressed out and overwhelmed. If you need help with your training and/or nutrition, visit www.TredegarPT.com for more information. And follow us on Facebook and Twitter for extra tips, advice and motivation.

If you can do this now, December will be much easier. You’ll be heading into the festive season in better shape than you Mark Broadbent are now, and with some momentum to keep it going. Master Personal Trainer & Instructor at Dartford Bootcamps Once party season hits, and your preparation is already helping www.DartfordBootcamps.com you to stay on track, it’s a case of moderation. RESCUE IS BEST

by Battersea Dog and Cats Home - Brands Hatch

We have teamed up with Battersea Dog and Cats home - Brands Hatch to bring you regular listings of animals requiring rehoming. Name: Lacey; Breed: Lurcher; Sex: Female; Age; 1 year 8 months; Centre: Brands Hatch; Reference: 376396 When she first arrived Lacey was a little worried, she has quickly gained confidence and has become exuberant. Lacey came into Battersea as a stray and as such we have no history about whether she has ever lived in a home environment, so she is going to need patient owners who are willing to gently train her using positive methods. Our rehomers can demonstrate some of these methods.

Name: Woody ; Breed: Domestic Short Hair; Sex: Male; Age; 6 years 2 months ; Centre: Brands Hatch; Reference: 377011 Lovely boy Woody is a friendly cat who, as much as he pretends not to be, is quite a sensitive soul. He is tentative in making new friends, but once he trusts you, he’ll make a fantastic companion. Although he isn’t particularly old, Woody can be likened to a grumpy old man sometimes! But his new owners just need to understand that he appreciates his space, and will let them know when he fancies a fuss. Woody loves to be able to go outside so he will need access to a garden once settled in his new home.

Lacey will need new owners that have owned a dog previously, with their own very secure garden for her to run around in and area to work on her training. She will also need to have her new family around when she first goes home and help teach her how to spend time on her own. Being a lurcher crossed with a bull breed, she does tend to forget her size, and has shown signs of getting herself easily frustrated. She does love her food and sometimes yours too and can sometimes forget her manners with this. Lacey is looking for a home in a quieter location away from the hustle and bustle so she can blossom into a well-rounded dog. Lacey has shown some nice social skills around other dogs but can be a bit boisterous in her play with little dogs. If you’re looking for an interactive dog to train and include in your adventures and are registered with us, Lacey may be the dog for you. Please contact our Brands Hatch site on 01474 875106 or email bbh.rehomers@battersea.org.uk www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

THEATRE REVIEW

BY LIZ DYER

Winter is coming, the nights are drawing in, and there’s a good chance it may never stop raining again… so what better excuse could there be to head to the Orchard for a night at the theatre? Last month we celebrated the life and career of rock ’n’ roll legend Buddy Holly, enjoyed a Hip Hop spectacular from ZooNation, and suffered more than one nasty scare at the hands of the Woman in Black. And this coming month promises a similarly varied programme of entertainment for the whole family.

Cabaret. Starring Jason Manford and Carley Stenson, the show follows detective Frank Cioffi as he investigates the on-stage murder of a Broadway star on her show’s opening night. Expect larger than life characters, toetapping tunes and plenty of belly laughs in this Tony award-winning show. Other treats to look forward to this month include Milkshake! Live (3rd) and Dear Zoo (11th-12th) for younger theatregoers, comedy from Britain’s Got Talent star Lost Voice Guy (10th), and of course the usual varied selection of musical extravaganzas, from the 60s to the 80s, the Bee Gees to Aretha. And if you’ve ever fancied taking a look at what goes on backstage (and you like tea and cake), why not check out this month’s Tea & Tour (22nd)?

One of the big highlights this month is David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy (13th-17th), the latest hit show from the producers of Gangsta Granny and Horrible Histories. The show tells the story of Joe Spud, the richest boy in the country, as he decides to leave his posh school and go to the local comp in search of a friend. A heart-warming tale about the things money can’t buy, this show is a must Finally – now that it’s November I don’t feel bad about for young and old alike. reminding everyone to get their panto tickets. This year’s show is Peter Pan, starring Eastenders’ Steve McFadden We can also look forward to the return of the much-loved as Captain Hook, and it all kicks off from 14th December, classic Blood Brothers (19th-23rd), Willy Russell’s timeless so don’t delay! story of the doomed Johnstone twins. Both the show and its iconic star, Lyn Paul, need little introduction - but if you’ve never seen it before, don’t miss this opportunity to catch it for the first time. And take tissues, because you will definitely need them… Closing out the month is Curtains (25th-30th), a comedy musical whodunnit from the creators of Chicago and
