ELLENOR CHARITY CYCLE RIDE By Basia Wilson Construction says: “Baxall are delighted to support this fundraising activity with a difference, and we are delighted to do our part in supporting ellenor”. Ride Local is an exciting charity cycling challenge suitable for every level of cyclist. “We’ve had everyone from 6 years old upwards signing up, and whether it’s about boosting your fitness or raising money for the charity, all contributions help provide care for adults and children living with life limiting or terminal illness. The current coronavirus pandemic has heightened uncertainty for many families under our care and it is vital that we are able to continue our specialist services to some of the most vulnerable in our local community. The support you give ellenor is essential and as a charity, we will continue to need it now and into the future. We can only continue thanks to your kindness and generosity” says Emma Bowles, ellenor interim Events Fundraising Manager.

Some races can only be won together. Please join us in supporting ellenor to raise awareness and funds for children’s and adults’ hospice and palliative care services across Kent.

Ride Local 100 runs from Saturday 1 August – Wednesday 30 September and all participants must comply with current lockdown and social distancing restrictions. For more information, and to take part, see https://ellenor.org/events/event-details/ ride-local-100

Throughout August and September, we are asking our supporters to join us in our Virtual Ride Local Cycling Challenge. Whether you are cycling for fitness, for fun or for the challenge, you will be helping us provide vital support to more than 3,000 people in Kent every year. Sponsored by Paddock Wood-based Baxall Construction, the event invites individuals, families and friends to ride a distance of your choosing - 100, 50 or 25 miles – which can be done either on an exercise bike at home or on a bike discovering the Kent countryside with friends and family. You can complete the distance at a pace that suits you, be it in one ride or across multiple rides, and record your distance on a GPS app such as Strava, Fitbit or Garmin. DARTFORD GIVING By Kate Hargreaves

Hello again and welcome back to Dartford Giving. If you left school long ago, but September still brings about some back-to-school vibes for you, maybe you’d like to consider being a school governor, so that you can really get in on the education action.

need the right attitude, time to contribute and a DBS check, which the school will arrange. “Anything else I need to know?” A lot of training is provided, so you should always feel supported. The role formally lasts four years, but you can be re-appointed or leave sooner if necessary. Schools benefit from having a range of professional knowledge on their governing board, including finance, HR, legal, marketing, organisational change and property management, so this could make you an especially in-demand candidate. For more information, take a look at www.nga.org.uk/ Governance-Recruitment/Be-a-school-governor-ortrustee.

School governor “What is it?” A school’s governing body provides strategic leadership and accountability. It holds the headteacher to account for the school’s educational performance, oversees the school’s financial performance and contributes to the school’s vision and strategic direction. It might sound a bit daunting, but your responsibilities are shared with the other governors (usually 8–20 people, depending on the size of the school). If the school is an academy, you’re a ‘trustee’ rather than a ‘governor’, but the “This sounds great, how do I get involved?” If you role is essentially the same. have a specific school in mind, you can look on its website, but it might be worth emailing too in case “Would I enjoy it?” If you want to contribute to your the website isn’t up-to-date. It’s great on your CV as it’s one of the few places where you can get board-level experience without being super experienced in a specific industry (and if you are already working at that level, your experience would be much appreciated by schools!). “How much time do I need for it?” Meetings are usually each term (six a year), and typically last a couple of hours (like most things, these are currently via video call). Being a school governor is a public duty for which you have a right to reasonable time off work, but whether this is paid is at your employer’s discretion. You may choose to get involved in additional tasks, such as being on a committee (e.g., pay review or pupil exclusion) or attending monitoring visits in the school, which take up a bit more time, but can be really interesting. “Are there any requirements?” You must be over 18 and there are some specific exceptions (check the website below). TOFFEE APPLE CRUMBLE CAKE By Debbie Dickinson These is a great, delicious Autumn recipe. Bake as a cake or in a larger tin to make fabulous, shallower cake bars that are perfect for lunchboxes! You’ll need: For the toffee apple: 2 Tbsp. Golden Syrup (or 3 tbsp. brown sugar and 2tbsp butter) 3 Apples, peeled and chopped into small dice For the cake: 200g Margarine 125g Brown Sugar 3 Eggs 200g Self Raising Flour 100g Plain Flour 2 tsp Cinnamon Pinch Nutmeg (optional) For the crumble topping: 15g Sugar 25g Unsalted Butter 25g Plain Flour 50g Porridge Oats

What to do: For the toffee apple: Heat the golden syrup (or sugar/butter mix) and boil gentle for a few minutes. Add the apples, turn down the heat a little, and simmer gently until softened. Leave to cool. For the cake: Cream the Margarine and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs and flour gradually, mixing well. Remember to scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure an even mix! Add your toffee apple mix, and spices, and stir until combined. Pour into a square 6” cake tin (or square 9” for cake bars) – lined with butter and baking paper. For the crumble topping: In another bowl, mix together the flour and sugar for the crumble topping. Crumble in the butter and rub, using fingertips only, into the flour/sugar mix. Mix in the oats and sprinkle into the tin over the cake mixture. Bake at 140°C for 60 minutes or until golden and a skewer/knife/cocktail stick comes out clean after being inserted in the centre of the cake. Enjoy!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO RELAX AND SLEEP MORE EASILY? By Clair Yates Two months ago, in this magazine, I told you there - You’ll be making the exhalation double the length of was an exercise so powerful that within a couple the inhalation. This will increase the relaxation response. of minutes practice it could lower your heart rate, Your job is to control the exhalation, so you can slowly boost your digestion and improve your sleep and let the breath out, without running out of air. this month I am going to share that practice with you, so that you too can experience more restful - Place your right hand on your heart and your left hand sleep, relax more easily and improve your digestion. on your belly. This relaxation practice is very simple and yet has a powerful downregulating effect on the nervous system, stimulating the parasympathetic response that is soothing and calming. Down-regulating breathing techniques, relieve stress, boost our digestion – hence the term rest and digest - and can help put you to sleep. It’s important to note that these practices can leave you feeling groggy and soporific so do use with care. For this downregulating, calming effect we need to reduce the rate of our breath to below 4 breathes per minute, triggering the rest and digest nervous system response, reducing our heart rate, reducing activity in our skeletal muscles, and improving our ability to digest our food. This type of breathing is great after meals, in the evening, and mostcommonly, right before bed. This practice should be done seated or lying down, and never while driving or doing anything standing or active. It’s extremely common to fall asleep while using this breathing practice, so it should be used with care, only when appropriate.
To summarise: • Use primarily before bed
 • Can be used (with care) to reduce intense stress or anxiety
 • After eating, this breathing pattern can aid in digestion
To begin: - Lie down on your back, on the ground or in bed, with your head supported by something like a pillow or cushion.

22

You’re aiming for the right hand to remain still and the left hand to rise and fall with the breath as you practice. Sometimes it’s helpful to visualize the belly as a balloon, on the inhale you can feel the belly expand and on the exhale you can feel the belly deflating. - Close your eyes. - Inhale slowly to the count of 4, pause. - Exhale slowly to the count of 8, pause. - Repeat 10 times - Relax the hands down beside you. Eyes remain closed. Let the breath find it’s own natural rhythm. Notice how you feel. Let me know how you get on. Take care of yourself, Clair.

TOP 5 MOST BEAUTIFUL ITALIAN ISLANDS By Harden Holidays

When we think of islands, we think of escapism, perfect beaches, and the ultimate opportunity for relaxation. The Italian islands give us glamour, seductive cuisine, and unique island landscapes. Italy has over 450 islands large and small, including sea, lake, and river islands. If you are asking yourself where in Italy should I visit? Find our Top 5 below. 5. AEOLIAN ISLANDS OF ITALY Off the coast of Sicily these Italian Islands are a collection of tiny volcanic islands. Rising out of clear blue seas, these idyllic islands are worthy of film sets. The island of Vulcano (which has a visibly smoking crater) is said to be the chimney of roman fire god Vulcan’s workshop. Best time to visit: With long summers and no crowds, these islands are perfect to visit from April to October. What to do: There are 7 main islands to visit (Vulcano, Salina, Lipari, Panera, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi), all can be visited on boat trips. The islands volcanic springs and mud baths are said to have healing qualities. Where to stay: Watch brilliant sunsets and indulge in healing spa treatments at Therasia Resort Sea & Spa in Vulcano. 4. SARDINIA Sardinia is quite simply heaven. Long white sand beaches are met by clear turquoise waters. Pretty rock formations provide a delightful contrast, creating the trademark patchwork of colours seen in Sardinia’s waters. So overly tempting is Sardinia, you will only believe it when you see it. Best time to visit: For luxury family holidays the weather in July and August is very inviting. Sardinia enjoys long summers; for a beach retreat you can still find warm weather in April and late October. What to do: Visit some of Sardinia’s natural wonders such as Neptunes grotto and the Maddalena Archipelego. For luxury holidays in Sardinia you will find beaches, yacht clubs and nightlife in the luxury resort of Costa Smerelda.

SICILY The unique culture is made up of Italian style, fascinating history, and a slow-paced Mediterranean charisma. The seductive coastline of Sicily is dotted with secluded coves, volcanic rock formations and a mix of sand and pebble beaches. Just as diverse as its coast, the inland is laden with flowery mountain meadows, lush valleys, and the alluring smoky hull of Mount Etna. Best time to visit: Sicily enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and long summers, with a warm breeze from North Africa. IPU NURSES: SHARING THE EMOTIONAL LOAD WITH PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES

want for our own loved ones and, when the time comes, an end that is peaceful, comfortable and dignified. Despite the challenges of a global pandemic, that dedication is unwavering and the ellenor team has adapted and pulled together as never before. Pivotal to the cohesion of the team is Lisa Ball, Staff Nurse in ellenor’s Inpatient Unit (IPU). Here, she reflects on the impact Covid has had on the patients she cares for, their families and the ellenor team. “I hope that the fact I’ve worked my way up through the nursing ranks gives me real perspective on what it takes to nurse effectively and compassionately. I began as a healthcare assistant, worked in the acute sector in Tunbridge Wells Hospital, but – as a Gravesend girl – I wanted to put something back into my local community. Plus, I know work doesn’t get more hands-on than it does at ellenor and that the ethos here is all about taking time with patients and their families, both to treat them medically and to understand their needs as individuals. I took up my role as staff nurse on the IPU in March. Then Covid-struck. “While my role will always be to support patients and their families medically, we’re also here to explain things to them and to make sure they understand the options open to them. Never has this been more vital than it is now, when Covid has thrown so much into chaos. Our patients and their families need the reassurance that we’re with them every step of the way, no matter what.

In these unprecedented times, as a charity expert in palliative care, ellenor continues to play a vital role in supporting our local community, our NHS and healthcare colleagues. Ellenor has a large team of healthcare professionals, support staff and volunteers, all of whom share one goal. This is to give every child or adult patient and their families the expert care and support we would

26

“We’ve been so busy as a team that the only thing we can do is keep on going. We’re still smiling behind our masks, but this has been an incredibly steep learning curve – from getting to grips with the practicalities of wearing full PPE to handling our own fears. Anything we as staff are enduring, though, is nothing compared to what patients and their families are going through. Their Covid-enforced social distancing from one another is incredibly difficult and, understandably, emotions are riding high. At least relatives can now come in to see loved ones under carefully controlled conditions – but for some that seems even harder: they can be together,

“Web v’een so busa teysam thta h to en th yln ig w cean dko seio epn goin W g smi serlt.’ein ilg behn i our dmasbu ktsh ,tsiabseen an i credsiby tleea prnn ig curv from –e getn tig to gw ripsth tih preactica of etislwearing fu Pto PEh landn ilg our own feaArn s.ythn ig w ases taffern edurintg hou , g n sih o ,thn ig comparetd o whpaetinatsntd h faeirmil

yet they can’t touch. And – as has been the case for relatives of some of our patients who’ve come to us from hospital – seeing someone for the first time having not seen then for six weeks can be very traumatic indeed. It’s our job as caring professionals to help everyone handle these situations and the emotions they unleash as best they possibly can. Some of our patients, who have taken the decision to shield themselves to the very end, will die with only our staff here to support them. The nursing staff are fine-tuned to changes in a patient’s medical condition, so we can alert the family the minute these occur and encourage them to come in if necessary. Never has our care and compassion been more important.

“With patients and families often feeling powerless, we’re doing all we can to sit down with those who come in and talk through all their concerns. But we’re spending far more time on the phone rather than face-to-face, which is so frustrating for everyone. Quite understandably, patients and their families offload to us – that’s what we’re here for – but it does get very tough at times. I’ve been sat with my head in my hands crying, and someone else in the team will pop by with a cup of tea and just listen. It’s listening that’s the absolute essential skill for all of us at the moment, I think.

“What’s been particularly brilliant is the speed at which we’ve been able to get our inpatients back home when that’s where they’ve wanted to be – one man was back with his wife and daughters within eight hours. And the outside agencies such as occupational therapists have worked with us to ensure everything necessary – a hospital-standard bed, for instance – is in place at home as quickly as possible, too, meaning it’s practical and safe for the patient to return.

“The sheer scale of this pandemic has meant new, often frightening, circumstances, even on top of the life-limiting conditions our patients are dealing with. The fact that ellenor has coped, is coping and will continue to cope with professionalism and kindness even in these very hardest of times makes me know how strong we are as a team and gives me faith in the future. We are here for our patients and their families and for one another, and we always will be.“

FITNESS - SEPTEMBER By Mark Broadbent

Shifting belly fat

Abs have always been considered a sign of a good physique (despite the fact even the skinniest of teenagers can have “abs”), and as such there have been so many “ab” plans promoted to us, gimmicky gadgets and gizmos to work your abs, 10-minute abs, 8-minute abs, 6-minute abs etc. etc. I get it. Most of us want that 6-pack look and if we can get that in 8 minutes a day, or by sitting with an electric belt on, why wouldn’t we?! But these things don’t really work. The fact of the matter is, we all have abs, it’s just a case of whether you can see them or not – which is down to the amount of bodyfat you have over the top of them. You can work your abs for 8 hours a day, but if you have a 2-inch layer of fat covering them, nobody’s going to see them! Whilst working your abs with specific exercises will help to strengthen and shape your abs, uncovering them is a case of reducing bodyfat levels to a point where they become visible, and sit-ups and crunches won’t do that. To shift the layer of fat over your abs, you have to shift the bodyfat from your entire body – you can’t just lose fat from one area at a time. To do this, you need some basic nutrition in place, as well as a good training plan that will encourage your body to retain muscle and burn fat for fuel. So what do you need to do…? Make sure you’re in a calorie deficit. This is the most basic principle of weight loss – if you’re burning more calories than you’re consuming, you’ll lose weight. Make sure you’re eating nutritious foods. It’s not just about calories. You need to be giving your body what it needs to build and maintain muscle and stay healthy. Luckily, the most nutritious foods are often low in calories so you can eat a lot and get plenty of vitamins and minerals and easily maintain your calorie deficit. Train. With weights (women too!). Resistance training is the key to making your body burn fat instead of muscle whilst in a calorie deficit. Use your muscles and your body will keep hold of them and use more bodyfat for fuel. Don’t use your muscles and your body will see them as an “expense”, costing valuable calories that it’s not getting whilst in a calorie deficit – meaning less fat burned, and some muscle lost.

28

Sorry, but running every day, doing spin classes or going to Zumba aren’t going to get the same results - if you enjoy them, do them, but incorporate weight training into your routine at least 2-3 times a week. Use compound lifts. Big, full-body movements work more muscles at once – meaning you’ll be burning more fuel and stimulating more muscle. This, again, means your body will be working to maintain muscle, meaning it’s using fat for fuel. It may feel like you need to do endless sit-ups to get your abs out, but in reality they’re only a small part of the puzzle. Focus on the points above and you’ll start to see your abs without doing a single “ab exercise”. Once you’ve lost enough bodyfat to start to see your abs, then you can start to bring in more specific exercises to target that area but don’t jump the gun, 1,000’s of crunches aren’t going to make your abs visible. Sadly we can’t just sit with a belt on or do a 5-minute ab circuit every now and then. So if you want to see your abs, work on these basic training and nutrition principles and you can “belly” laugh at the people still waiting for their crunch machine to show some results! As always, if you want my help getting a suitable training and nutrition plan set up, get in touch and we can go through your options. www.MBonlinePT.com @MarkBroadbentPT

AVOIDING COVID SCAMS By Christina Uppenkamp - Home Instead Senior Care

COVID-19 has seen a proliferation of Coronavirus related scams. Scammers are experts at exploitation. The novel Coronavirus pandemic has left many people vulnerable, and people who are vulnerable are, unfortunately, much easier to exploit. Knowledge is power! Protect your loved ones by familiarising them with the most common types of COVID-19 scams, the means by which scammers target people, and actionable tips for identifying and combating scams. Common Types of COVID-19 Scams Scams come in all shapes and sizes, but certain types are especially common. The most prevalent types of COVID-19 scams are: Investment Scams Scammers are capitalising on the fact that many people are financially at-risk right now. When the light at the end of the tunnel is dim, people are less inclined to ask questions when a windfall or investment opportunity arises, even if it seems too good to be true. While they’ve become much more prevalent during the pandemic, investment scams have been around for quite some time. In 2015, the government relaxed rules on tax-free pension withdrawals, and since then, scammers have been targeting pensioners with investment scams. Note that it’s illegal to call someone about their pension without a formal arrangement (a set call or meeting time), so if you or your loved one receives a call, but you haven’t set one up, then the call is likely a scam. Insurance Scams The Association of British Insurers (ABI) warns of several types of insurance scams, including automated and personed calls informing that insurance rates are rising and requesting payment, and ghost brokers selling fake COVID-19 insurance. If your loved one receives a call from someone who claims to be from an insurance company, they should

34

request the caller’s extension number, and politely let the caller know they’ll be in touch once they’ve had time to discuss with a trusted family member. Test and Trace Scams Scammers have been contacting UK residents in the guise of NHS Test and Trace. The scammers claim that the receiver has been in contact with a known COVID-19 case and that immediate testing is required. In some cases, the caller requests payment for the test, typically around £500. Other times, the caller asks for personal information, including location, number of people in the household, and so on. Remember, NHS Test and Trace agents will never ask for money or direct someone to a non-NHS website. In general, NHS agents will only ask for personal details in-person, at the time of a Coronavirus diagnostic test, or if you’re calling for a test result (to confirm identity). Scammers use technology to spoof phone numbers, so a fraudulent call may appear to come from a legitimate number. Inform your elderly loved one that if they’re unsure, they should hang up and call the NHS Test and Trace line at 0300 013 5000. Door-to-Door Testing Scams Door-to-door scams are especially alarming - you can’t hang up on someone when they’re at the front door. Doorstep scammers insist that they’re conducting at-home COVID-19 testing on behalf of the NHS or a GP. These scammers are often thieves who are assessing a victim’s living situation or trying to gain access to their home. Discourage your elder from answering the door when a stranger is knocking. A simple wave, smile, and “no thank you” from a nearby window is usually enough to deter scammers. If your loved one mistakenly opens the door, they should always behave as though they’re not alone. Insist that they tell the probable scammer that they’re on the phone and ask if they can drop by tomorrow instead. In the meantime, your loved one should contact a trusted friend or family member, alert neighbours, and contact the police to file a report.

General Tips for Protecting Your Loved Ones Keep up-to-date on current scams. You’ll be better prepared to deal with scammers (and help your loved ones deal with scammers) if you know what to expect. Get in touch with your loved one every time you hear about a new scam.

Means of Contact Online Internet users should be wary of unusual emails, even those that seem to be coming from a known source. People who use social media need to practice caution, as well - especially when clicking links to leave the platform. Show your elderly loved one how to check the source - the part that comes after http:// or www. in a URL. If they don’t recognise it, it’s best not to click. Remember that social media ads are simply sponsored spaces. These spaces are monitored for authenticity - but not always adequately. Remind elders to be critical of anything they see online. By Phone Advise your loved one to ignore any text messages that aren’t from a trusted friend or relative. Sometimes, scammers send messages to tons of numbers at once just to see which numbers are active. If your loved one receives a call, whether it’s from a familiar or unfamiliar number, they should approach cautiously. Remember, scammers have the technology to borrow any phone number. If something seems off, encourage your loved one to insist on calling the person back on a number they know is legitimate. Insist they discuss with you or another trusted friend or family member in the meantime.

Remind your elder that if they’re wary, they needn’t disclose personal information. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Make a list for your loved one of terms that often signal scams - pension liberation, cryptocurrency, high-yield investment, and so on. Encourage them to resist engaging with anyone who asks for payment by prepaid credit or gift cards. Remind loved ones that even the greatest, limitedtime-only deal, isn’t limited to a 30-minute window. There’s always time to hang up, call a trusted friend or family member, and call back. Install antivirus software on your loved one’s computer. If your loved one agrees, ask if you can have access to monitor their incoming emails. And finally, even elders, with decades of experience, sometimes forget that few things in life are free. Remind them that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. At Home Instead Senior Care Dartford, our Caregivers are trained to look out for any suspicious activity when supporting their clients, and to report any concerns to the client and/or their family. If you are looking for care for a loved one, be it home help, companionship, overnight care, dementia, or respite care, please call 01322 584438 to find out how we can help you.

In-Person With social distancing guidelines in place, there’s no reason to answer the door to a stranger. Remind your elderly loved one that times have changed, and things are different than they were 30 or 40 years ago when they’d invite a salesperson into their home without a second thought.

LIFT THE PRESSURE OF SEPTEMBER SPENDING

As well as the beginning of a new school year, September also marks 100 days until Christmas Day on the 16th. We know that both of these events can bring additional pressure when you’re living on a tight budget. Here are a few tips to help you save a little and spend less this month. Reuse school uniforms if you can Due to the lockdown, your kids’ school uniforms may have had less wear than they normally would this year. If they’re in good condition and still fit, this could be a welcome money saver. Check before you buy new. Swap and save with other families If your kids have outgrown their uniform or shoes, how about organising a school uniform swap with other families in your area? There are loads of Facebook groups set up to do exactly this so check if there’s one in your area. If not, you could set one up yourself. You can bet there will be a lot of grateful parents. Find out if you qualify for help with uniform costs If you really do need to buy new uniform items and PE kit, make sure you check what help is available in your local area via the council. Visit gov.uk/help-school-clothing-costs to check if you’re eligible. Remember that you don’t need to

buy everything all at once. Take the pressure off yourself and make a plan based on what you urgently need and what could wait a little while until you have more cash saved up. Label it to keep it safe Get yourself a laundry marker from the supermarket or online and label each item of uniform. This way, it will find its way back to you if it gets lost, and you won’t have to spend money on replacements. Plan and save for Christmas Once the school uniforms are sorted, it only seems two minutes before we start turning our attention towards Christmas. Thankfully, there’s still plenty of time to plan ahead and start saving towards the costs. Think about what’s most important to you and prioritise your spending. Is it having a nice family meal and get-together? Or is it making sure that each person has a gift to open? Maybe it’s a combination of things. Either way, plan your budget carefully in advance so that you know what you can and can’t afford, and how much you need to save up. Try saving just £1 per day – that’s £100 saved by Christmas Day. How many turkeys, spuds and sprouts could you buy with that?

Make a list to avoid impulse buys To help you stick to your budget, it’s a good idea to make a list of what you need to buy and tick things off as you get each item. Then have a look at what offers are available in the shops. Maybe you could have a box, storage cupboard or space in the freezer to set aside and save any tinned, packet or frozen foods that are on special offer. Why not do the same with presents? Just remember where you hide them! Spend time, not money Let’s not forget that Christmas doesn’t have to mean splashing out. What do you remember most about Christmases when you were a child? Is it the presents or the memories? We can find a lot of joy in spending time with loved ones without having to spend money. Keep an eye out for events that your local church is planning for December – a carol service could be the ideal opportunity to spend time together as a family. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity with services across the country delivering debt counselling, money management, job clubs, life skills groups, and support for people breaking habitual dependencies. Many of our services are currently taking place online or over the phone. Visit capuk.org to find out more.

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS BY LOCAL RESIDENT, JANE STEVENSON FROM BOOKWORM MAGGOT TO ADULTHOOD My mum signed me up for Dartford Library membership when I was a few months old… apparently. What is fact is that both parents read stories to me and encouraged me to read from a very early age. Since then I’ve read voraciously most of my life. I’ve always had a bed books, a bath book and a bag book. I still scour charity and second-hand booksellers for something to pique my interest. However, after tripping over the third pile of books left on the stairs, for shelving, I thought I really should make the effort to kick start my own reading, which has lessened over the past few months. Either that, or risk breaking an ankle. Armed with determination and a ‘keep things tidy’ ethic not usually present, I lugged said weighty tomes up stairs only to discover I didn’t have any room left on the shelves. It was apparent I only had one course of action; to go through my books and trash, treasure or donate. Such a job would only take a couple of minutes to do or so I thought. An hour later I had the three piles, one almost as tall as me. The ‘trash and donate’ piles were sadly underrepresented with only a paltry three sitting there. What I did have was a host of unread biographies, many detective novels, a few scripts and factual texts on my interests. I found a few jigsaw puzzles as well, which was a bonus. Mind you, I did wonder just how many books on tree lore a person needs.

38

I ploughed on, and eventually felt I’d reached my goal. I’d said goodbye to a couple of housekeeping manuals (unread), a cookbook, some novels abandoned as too boring and also my guilty pleasure ‘The Meg’ about a giant man-eating shark! The shelves are still full, but I have a reading plan in place at long last. I’m going to make a bigger effort to read more and have set myself a goal of thirty minutes a day to start. By the way, those discarded books are available to anyone who uses the local charity shops in Dartford. Enjoy reading about the trees! CLUB TROPICANA One of the local history sites has been posting some wonderful comments and pictures of the outdoor swimming pools which used to be in the area. Recent pictures of the old Burnham Road swimming pool, and the two pools at Martens Grove certainly brought some memories back. I’ve swum at both venues, as well as the Charlton Lido some years ago. Even the paddling pool in Dartford Park would be so welcome now. With summers set to be hotter than ever, it would be wonderful to spend the day lounging round the pool, dipping in to cool off. A new approach to outdoor pools is needed – not a return to the industrial type complexes they were. I wonder if there are any enterprising young business folk who might consider such a venture. By making them more versatile as a leisure facility could be a start. Dartford deserves more than further housing and shops. Why not an ice rink too. It would be packed in this weather. JINGLE BELL ROCK Can I mention the C word? Perhaps it’s thinking about those of cold crisp mornings and clear frosty nights as a panacea as we sit in this sweltering heat, but I have been doing some Christmas shopping. I love Christmas and choose to go overboard every year. I do wonder if this year will be any different. There are too many variables; will we be isolating again, will travel be banned, can relatives stay over? I sincerely hope not. For now, I’m making lists, checking online suppliers and writing out Christmas card lists. I’ve got a couple of gifts in storage waiting for their adornment of glittery paper, shiny bows and oodles of tissue paper. From today there are only 134 days until December 25th. Just saying.

Wishing all Dartford Living readers well. See you next month

CAR NEWS SEPTEMBER 2020

By Dhiren Ganesh

In this month’s article we look at new versions which are all have hybrid versions, which is becoming standard within the industry for new cars.

2021 Renault Megane – the updated Renault Megane family hatchback gets plug-in hybrid power for the first time and upgrades. There will now be a plug-in hybrid version of both the hatchback and estate models. Named Megane E-Tech, it uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that works in conjunction with two electric motors to produce a combined 158bhp. It will be able to manage 30 miles on electric alone. The current 1.3-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines are still available. A new 10in digital instrument cluster replaces the previous analogue dials and you can put the most useful information, including the sat-nav map, directly in front of your eyes. The standard equipment will include front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, a rear parking camera and lane-departure warning. Prices start from £20,740, with the

new plug-in hybrid variant starting from £30,685 virtual distance of 10 metres ahead. Availbale from early 2021 prices are estimated to be – all available from later in 2020. from £80,000.

2021 Mercedes S-Class – this is the new S-Class is said to be considerably lighter than the outgoing car, thanks partly to the body being almost 60% aluminium, improving fuel economy and emissions. Its rear-wheel steering will have increased steering angle to reduce its turning circle. The engine line-up includes turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six and twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 petrols, both of which feature mild hybrid electrical assistance. UK buyers will probably be more interested in the 2.9-litre six-cylinder diesel and the sole plug-in hybrid – this will have an electric only range of 62 miles, almost double that of some of its rivals. The exterior design of the new S-Class will be an evolution of the current car’s, with a bolder front grille and horizontal tail-lights, which extend into the bootlid. On this inside technologies will make use of a mix of fingerprint, face and voice recognition and a new augmented-reality head-up display, which projects information into the driver’s eyeline at a

2020 Kia Stonic small SUV – Kia’s smallest SUV gains mild-hybrid technology, new driver assistance features and improved connectivity. The current Stonic will receive the introduction of a new mild hybrid version and economyboosting revisions to the two existing petrol engines. The new EcoDynamics+ mild hybrid petrol engine is offered in two power outputs: 99bhp and 118bhp. The Stonic’s existing 1.0 and 1.2-litre petrol engines remain on offer, but both have been revised to improve efficiency. On the inside there is a larger 8.0in touchscreen to replace the 7.0in and Apple CarPlay & Android Auto available for smart phone connectivity. Kia’s latest advanced driver assistance systems have also been added, including automatic emergency braking that recognising cyclists too, a blind spot monitoring system and a rearward collision avoidance system to prevent collisions. SPORTING ROUNDUP S P O RT I NG RO U ND U P

Women’s football is at a crossroads after lockdown and needs investment but the sport can emerge strong despite the coronavirus No elite women’s football has been played in England since March. The new Women’s Super League season begins 5-6 September. Crowds, participation and commercial interest in women’s football all rose sharply after the 2019 World Cup in France, during which a peak of 11.7m watched the England Women’s team, but there are concerns the sport has not been visible this summer. Add to concern that fact that the majority of WSL clubs have published financial losses in their accounts for the 2018-19 season, and the Football Association (who run the WSL) announced they were planning for a potential financial loss of about £300m as a result of the pandemic; things then may seem bleak... However, it may be that several private equity firms have expressed interest in buying a stake in the WSL, in addition to the interest from the men’s Premier League who are still in talks over a potential takeover of the WSL, so money and expertise could be injected. With the men’s game surely now reaching saturation from a sponsorship point of view, maybe sponsors and investors will consider better value in the women’s game?

Upcoming events in September include: 2: Athletics - Diamond League, Lausanne 4-6: Formula 1 - Italian Grand Prix, Monza 4-5: Athletics - British Championships, Manchester 4: Athletics - Diamond League, Brussels 5: Football - Nations League: Iceland v England 8: Football - Nations League: Denmark v England 11-13: Formula 1 - Toscana Grand Prix, Mugello 12: Football - 2020-2021 Premier League season to start 17-20: Golf - US Open, Winged Foot, New York 17: Athletics - Diamond League, Rome/Naples 25-27: Formula 1 - Russian Grand Prix, Sochi 25: Athletics - Diamond League, Doha 27 September-10 October: Tennis - French Open, Roland Garros
