DARTFORD MP’S DOG THEFT PETITION by Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford

Dog theft is an issue I have been keen to highlight since I became the MP for Dartford. In England and Wales, around 60 dogs are stolen every week, many of which are never returned to their owners. In Kent alone, hundreds of dogs have been stolen during the past seven years, causing untold anguish for both the owners and dogs alike. Last March, I joined forces with the Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance (SAMPA) to host the first Dog Theft Awareness Day at an event in Parliament in a bid to raise awareness on this issue. Dog theft is a really nasty crime which causes distress to all involved and unfortunately the people who commit this crime are rarely caught. One of the major issues is there is no specific crime of dog theft at the moment. If an offender is convicted, then the Courts’ sentencing guidelines mean they have to sentence according to the value of the dog, rather than the heartbreak it causes to the owner. Therefore, unless the dog is of high financial value, they cannot impose a term of imprisonment. This approach just means dogs are treated in the same way as a mobile phone or other such object, rather than a member of the family. Some police forces around the country do record the theft as dog theft, whereas others are not specific. To get a real picture of the issue, I contacted all the police forces in England and Wales to gather the statistics on dog theft. Between 2011 and the beginning of 2017, more than 5000 dogs were reported as stolen, unfortunately 6

just 12% were recovered. Kent Police is one of the best in the country at reuniting stolen dogs with their owners. Just a few months ago, officers from Kent found a stolen dog in the county and returned it to its owner in Sussex within 24 hours of it being taken. We also had an incident of a dog stolen in Longfield recently which was returned to the owner after three weeks. These are though, the exceptions. Most dogs that are stolen are taken from peoples’ gardens and some are taken from outside shops. A few are used in dog fighting, but most are sold on or even sold back to the owners when a reward is offered. The Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance works tirelessly to help raise the issue of dog theft and help reunite animals with their owners. They have launched a petition asking for pet theft to be reclassified as a crime in its own right and to date there are more than 75,000 signatures with many household names including Ricky Gervais, Miranda Hart and Peter Egan adding their names in a bid to get the law changed. Debbie Matthews of SAMPA said: “Pet Theft is a cruel and devastating crime, made all the more painful when the law refers to family pets as ‘personal items’. I know the pain caused as my two dogs were stolen 12 years ago. I was one of the lucky owners and got both dogs back because of a large media campaign thanks to my father being Sir Bruce Forsyth. “Dogs and all pets are affected both physically and mentally when they are stolen, as I know from my own dogs, surely animal welfare of this type should be high on any government’s agenda? “Our pets mean more to us than our phones or bicycles. Why doesn’t the law reflect this?” I hope this petition will get more than 100,000 signatures and a public debate will be held on the issue. Meanwhile I will continue to lobby the Government for more appropriate sentencing guidelines. Dog theft is a cruel crime and whilst it continues, I will do all I can to highlight this issue and call for tougher sentences for those responsible. NEW MAYOR FOR DARTFORD by Councillor David Mote - Mayor of Dartford

Promoting our town's remarkable people, places and organisations.

so special and it's a large part of my new role to remind everyone that Dartford is very special indeed.

It is a tremendous honour to be elected as the new Mayor of Dartford. I know I am following in the footsteps of so many illustrious former Mayors and I only hope I can do justice to the role they have helped shape.

Our town may be small by comparison to other places in Kent but we’re blessed with some amazing new facilities for families. We have superb leisure facilities like the new Fairfield, Princes Park stadium that has been the scene of so many proud days for our local club, the world -class Judo club and the new Cricket Pavilion. Even more are on the way with a new Rugby Club on the horizon.

Over the next 12 months, with my wife Ellen supporting me as the Mayoress, I look forward to meeting and promoting the remarkable people, places and organisations I believe make Dartford such an outstanding place. Some of those remarkable people and organisations form the four charities I will be supporting during my year in office. It was a seriously tough job to choose charities that are working to help people in Dartford, but I am pleased to say that the Mayor’s Charity Appeal for 2018-19 will support four locally based charities:

We can all grumble about things from time to time but Dartford is a really great community with much to celebrate. The M25 may bring us more than a fair share of trouble but we are part of a transport network that many towns would envy - good links to London and modern high speed trains to London and into Europe.

Cherished Memories www.cherished-memories.co.uk Home Start North West Kent Mary’s Child SAfE www.safeadvice.org.uk/

Our town centre is emerging after some tough times for high streets everywhere, Bluewater is thriving and who could forget our beautiful Central Park? Even the weather is on our side - the record high temperatures often wrongly attributed to Gravesend are actually recorded on the Dartford side of the border!

I have not always lived in Dartford but my time living elsewhere helps me appreciate what our town has, and does, that other towns can can only aspire to. It’s easy to forget the positive things that make where we live

Dartford, like all towns, faces challenges but with great people, great communities and a great spirit we are well placed to meet them. I believe that Dartford is something we can, and should, be very proud of. I certainly am.

BIP BOP BLOG by Charlotte Wise

There is also a dinosaur area called The Lost Kingdom which boasts some mini rollercoasters as well as lifelike dinosaurs which my son really enjoyed too. The park was clean and I was really impressed with the food. We bought a ‘George’ hoodie for a tenner in the HUGE yet reasonably priced souvenir shop with a lifesize flying unicorn on the ceiling (which sadly wasn’t for sale!) We arrived when the park opened and didn’t leave until it closed. There were no naps, but no tantrums or misbehaviour either and it was a brilliant family day out.

Hi DL Readers! Hope everyone has been enjoying the sunshine (it’s currently lovely and sunny as I write this so I hope it continues by the time this is published!) Anyhow, this month I thought I would write about our trip to Peppa Pig World as I genuinely cannot recommend this place enough for toddlers. My son is two and a half and he is OBSESSED with Peppa Pig! If you have a baby, I urge you not to introduce this character into your child’s life as it will completely take over! That said, if you do have a child who also shares this Peppa Pig liking, they will be in awe of the fictitious world that Paultons Park have created.

So if you’re struggling for something to do this summer with your toddler Peppa Pig World could definitely be your answer. We want to go back again very soon! Until next time Charlotte x BipBopShop Facebook/Twitter/Instagram @bipbopmum Visit the website BipBopShop.com

Now Aw Winn ard ing!

Based in Hampshire, Paultons Park is ideal for children aged between 2 and 5 years. I should also say there are a handful of rides that will also entertain the thrill seeking adults and older siblings including a backwards rollercoaster and other rides to make your tummy feel upside down and inside out! Speaking of rides though, Peppa Pig World now has 2 brand new rides to be enjoyed this summer and there is a meet and greet with Peppa and George every day. My son was so excited to meet the ‘real’ Peppa and George and he ran around the park wanting to explore all the things he had seen in the cartoon including Windy Castle, Miss Rabbit’s Helicopter, Peppa Pig’s House and Grandpa Pig’s train. It was so lovely to see him so happy.

VADs IN DARTFORD DURING WORLD WAR 1 by Sarah Helen-Snow

Who or what are VADs and what did they do? The Territorial and Reserve Forces Act of 1907 allowed voluntary aid organisations to be set up in England and Wales. So, in 1909, The Red Cross Association, The Order of St. John and the Territorial Forces Association set up their Voluntary Aid Divisions. These were intended to be used for Home defence only, but in the event, they served abroad in France, Belgium, Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. VADs performed an important role and the majority their members were women and worked alongside qualified nurses. They were trained by the British Red Cross in First Aid, bed making, feeding patients, giving blanket baths and keeping the wards clean. In other words, they performed supportive roles acting as nursing assistants. The rules of their constitutions were somewhat elastic however, and this meant that often they undertook a variety of work. They could be cleaners, cooks, administrators and ambulance drivers; all as the need arose. At the outbreak of war there were some 46,000 women serving in VADs. By the end, over 90,000 were registered. From the very beginning of the war, people were placed on high alert just awaiting the call to help and in Kent, this call came as early as October 1914. Nearly 100 detachments were on stand-by and in Bromley, for example, within 14 hours of the first call to duty going out, over 2000 soldiers; Belgian and British were settled in their beds in local hospitals.

would first get treatments at his Regimental Aid Post. Care here, was provided by the Battalion Medical Officer and his medical orderlies. From here he would be moved to an Advanced Dressing Station. This was close to the Front Line and was manned by the Royal Army Medical Corps. The next stage in his journey saw him at a tented camp – the Casualty Clearing Station. This was behind the lines. From here he would be moved through a Base Hospital and would be loaded on to a Hospital Ship. With such a wide range of serious injuries, hospitals soon began to specialise in specific types of injury. This ensured better treatment for the casualties. Large houses and hotels were then used as convalescent hospitals. In the Dartford area there many hospitals and each one tended to specific categories of patients. The Orchard Hospital was originally a convalescence hospital with 1,200 beds. In October 1916 this became the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No. 3. The Southern Hospital, known as Gore Farm before 1911, was divided into 2 sections. The Upper Hospital was handed to the US military authorities in June 1918 and was known as US Base Hospital No.37 and treated only US casualties. In October 1918 George V and Queen Mary visited the base which was the first time a monarch visited and inspected an American Base Hospital. The Lower Hospital was handed to the military in May 1915. At this point it became known as Dartford War Hospital. This treated German Prisoners of War. Those who succumbed to their wounds and illnesses were originally buried in Darent Park, but they were later exhumed by the German War Graves Commission and all 285 were re-buried in Cannock Chase. In the next article I will be looking more at the VADs who were in these hospitals.

In our area there were many hospitals (both existing and newly created) which took in the wounded and cared for the soldiers, not just from the commonwealth and allied nations, but also prisoners of war casualties. How did soldiers end up at any of our local hospitals? The journey to a comfortable hospital bed could be an arduous one. When initially injured, our valiant soldier 12

“Are You Aware of the Alarming Decline in Health Giving Nutrients of Modern Food?” It is shocking when you discover that Mineral Depletion in the soils across the world has already been studied and reported yet you hear nothing of this in the news or from your doctor. You are told to simply ‘eat healthily’, but how is this possible if the nutrients are not in the soil or in the food you eat?

Mineral Depletion a Global Problem • South America - 76% Loss • Asia - 76% Loss • Africa - 74% Loss • Europe - 72% Loss • Australia - 55% Loss

Depletion analysis confirmed by... ✓ World Health Organization ✓ UNICEF ✓ UK Ministry of Agriculture ✓ Royal Society of Chemistry

To make things even worse, the supplements you buy in shops are mainly Metallic Minerals, NOT Plant Derived ‘food state’ Minerals.

Where Did All the Minerals Go? When dinosaurs ruled the earth they were living in an environment abundant with life-supporting plant minerals. Soils were full of minerals and trace elements which were absorbed through the root systems of plants to become part of a vibrant, life-sustaining food supply. Over time, erosion, acid rain and profit-based farming methods have depleted our topsoil of its precious minerals. Modern technology has only made this problem worse. Today’s farmers are able to produce double or even triple the yields of most major fruits, vegetables and grains compared to 50 years ago. However, the quantity of food available does not make up for the lack of quality or the severely depleted nutrient content.

SIZZLING MINERALS Plant Derived Food State Minerals are what nature wants you to eat. Metallic Minerals are not food. The plant eats the metallic minerals and converts them... you then eat the plant... Simple !!

TRAVEL SPOTLIGHT HARDEN HOLIDAYS by Tim Harden

Travel spotlight –Harden Holidays When trying to decide on a subject for this month’s column a friend suggested I should write about myself. The more I thought about it, the more it makes sense to write about my career in travel, Harden Holidays and how I came to open Dartford’s only travel agency.

New Zealand, travelling from Heathrow to Los Angeles or Hong Kong once a week. It was a wonderful period, especially once promoted to serve in the premium cabins and looking after celebrities like Ozzy Osbourne and Jamie Leigh Curtis. However, after four years of near constant jet-lag it was time to hang up my wings. So, I moved back home and started working on the front desk of the Hilton Dartford Bridge, eventually becoming the Night Manager. But after a couple of years I decided to get into travel sales, so I briefly took on a role at First Choice before joining Flight Centre as a Travel Consultant. I spent the next seven years at Flight Centre, eventually moving into their internal audit and finance teams. I learnt so much about booking and organising travel, as well as how the back-office functions of the business functioned. And so, in 2015, I pulled all my experience together to establish Transylvanian Touring Ltd. The purpose of the company was to offer escorted tour packages to Romania, a real growth area for tourism. We still offer these tours and currently have a bus of tourists in the country as I write. It was during a conversation with our Account Manager at the Travel Trade Association that it was suggested that we could also operate as a travel agent.

My first role in travel was back at the tail end of the 90s, when I started flying as cabin crew with Airtours International. After flying the short-haul routes around Europe for nine months I was trained onto their long-haul aircraft and really began living the dream. I was fortunate to spend time in the Caribbean, Brazil, Thailand and the Maldives amongst others. After four years I moved airline and began flying with Air

It was like a light-bulb as I realised that Dartford had no travel agent! How could a town as large as ours not have such a basic service? And from that meeting Harden Holidays was born. We chose the name as we are a family business that sells holidays, simple. Having worked in several travel companies there was a clear culture that I wanted to develop at Harden Holidays. It was very important that the agency be independent, so there is no head office telling us what to sell. We can book all the big travel companies, Thomas Cook, TUI, Jet2Holidays, James Villas, Kuoni, SAGA, and all the cruise

lines. We also have our own ATOL license so can create our own tailored packages. But crucially, our independence means our advice is impartial, we are under no obligation to promote one company over another.

Our independence means greater choice for our clients, but equally important to me was price. I make sure that our prices are the same as if you went direct to any of our approved suppliers. The difference is that you will always have someone to speak to, face to face, in the town centre. I believe a company cannot expect the support of the community, unless that company is willing to support the community. With that in mind, we were one of the sponsors of last year’s Dartford Festival and will do the same again this year. We’re also supporting a local charity – ellenor. My wife and I are currently recovering from walking 26.2

miles during their sponsored Walkathon last weekend. All the holidays booked through us have 100% financial protection, so your money is safe. We have a wider range of holidays available than you’ll find at Bluewater. More importantly, we’re a local, family business who really care about the holidays we book and the community we live in. So next time you’re in the town centre, pop in for a cup of tea.

NORTH KENT SCOTTISH ASSOCIATION By David Reid

We welcome novice or experienced reelers from all backgrounds to share in this most popular of Scottish pastimes. We pride ourselves on our ability to convert sceptical first-timers into accomplished dancers of whatever level they wish to attain. Dancing of all kinds is becoming an increasingly popular choice for many weddings, reunions, birthday parties, charity galas and Christmas or New Year celebrations throughout the UK.

Scottish country dancing is fun and wonderful exercise for both body and mind. We welcome dancers of all ages and levels of experience and our dance programmes include simple dances for beginners as well as those for the more experienced. We have a team of MCs who walk through our dances giving everyone an opportunity to join in. North Kent Scottish Association are a group of friendly social dancers who meet at 8p.m. every Wednesday evening at the Barnhehurst Golf club, Mayplace Road East. We enjoy Scottish country dancing, usually to recorded music. We hold several dances each year at a larger venue.

The hall at Barnehurst is a lovely place to dance, situated close to the junction with Manor way, bus 492 stops conveniently outside and there is ample car parking space. You don't need to come with a partner or to wear tartan, but it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear e.g. dancing pumps or soft, flat shoes as trainers are rather too cumbersome. Whether you are coming for the first time or have been many years ago,we can assure you of a very warm welcome, or better still get in touch with our secretary beforehand. Our club secretary is available to answer any questions you may have either by phone 020 8311 7282, 07398 522282, or by email, david@davidfromblighty.plus.com

MONEY ADVICE

WEBSITE: www.capuk.org TELEPHONE: 0800 328 0006

by CAP

Summer is fast approaching, which for many means school holidays. This can be a fun-filled time for families to enjoy hanging out together, but it can also be stressful for parents to figure out how on earth to pay for it all. Goodbye free childcare and hello to increased holiday prices! Here are some top tips for lowering the cost – and your stress levels.

include tours and activities where you’ll end up having to pay extra!

Don’t overreach. If you know you’ve got a tight budget to stick to, work out what you can afford and shop around. There are lots of price comparison websites online that you can use to make sure you get the best deal. You might even consider staying in the UK to cut down on travel costs.

If you do decide you’re going to splash out, make sure you don’t get yourself into a sticky situation to do so! No holiday is worth the stress of ending up in debt. Instead of relying on credit, plan ahead, put aside some money each month, and have a realistic budget for the trip. You can also get expert help to budget and save money with the UK’s largest face-to-face adult money education course, run in churches all over the UK. Visit capmoneycourse. org to search for your nearest course and get signed up.

Manage expectations. If you know you’re not going to be able to afford a lavish holiday this year, be honest and talk to your kids about it. Chat about what you can afford and plan some alternative ways to have fun during the holidays. This will take some of the pressure off you and give you chance to start saving for next year. Remember, there’s no obligation to go on holiday during the summer. Could your family wait until October half term? Although prices may still be higher than during term time, you’re out of high season at this point, so you’ll pay less than you would in the middle of summer – and it’ll be less busy. Avoid taking your kids out of school during term time – the last thing you need is a fine! Plan ahead. You could save up to 26% by booking flights 53 days in advance, with the cheapest days to fly generally being Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the most expensive being Saturdays. According to research, those flying on Saturdays can pay up to 11.5% more for their flights! Other popular flight days are Fridays, Sundays and bank holidays, which should be avoided to keep costs down. Flights that depart between 6pm and 12am tend to be cheapest.

If you have friends or relatives who live abroad – or the UK – and they’re going on holiday, why not offer to housesit for them? This way, you could have a break, save money on accommodation and lend a hand at the same time.

When it comes to holidays, what’s most important is to relax, recharge and have a good time. So long as you do your research, shop around, know your budget, and book early, there’s no reason why you can’t have a welldeserved rest without breaking the bank. If you find you are financially already in a sticky situation, you may need to seek help from a professional debt counselling organisation. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) helps over 2,500 people to become debt free every year and offers a unique combination of practical and emotional support throughout the journey. Find out more at capuk.org or call 0800 328 0006 free of charge to book an appointment with a trained local debt coach.

Package holidays can work out cheaper than booking everything separately. But beware of packages that www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

GARDENING WITH THE WORLD GARDEN By Tom Hart-Dyke

you keep them looking their best, ideally watering early morning or late evening to ensure the water doesn’t evaporate or scorch your plant beauties!

June is one of my favourite months, as the garden comes alive with Summer colour and sweet scents to enjoy, especially welcome this year after such challenging weather conditions. It’s the perfect month to plant summer bedding and tender plants, as well sowing your seeds such as gorgeous Cosmos to add more colour. As it warms up, keep an eye on your containers and hanging baskets to ensure

As we enter Summer it’s also a good time to keep on top of weeding and deadheading to keep the garden tidy and ensure it looks its best. Removing spent flowers means you will encourage new growth and extend the flowering period of your beds. Don’t forget to keep pruning your shrubs to ensure everything doesn’t get overgrown and stake any tall plants such as delphiniums to prevent damage. It also heats up in The World Garden at the end of June with our popular Fire Engine Rally, an action packed ‘special event’ for all the family! A spectacular showcase of firefighting history with over 20 fire engines and carts from the Victorian and the Edwardian periods right up to the present day organised by the Fire Service Preservation Group South East Branch. Visitors will be able to experience epic live fire displays during both days run by the Fire Service Preservation Group South East Branch enthusiasts, demonstrating how to put out various kinds of fires. Younger visitors can get a slice of the action and learn how they operate, with the opportunity to even squirt the hoses. Fire Engine Rally – Saturday 30th June & Sunday July 1st – 11am – 5pm. SPORTS NEWS Bav’s Sporting Comment

Mohamed Salah broke the Premier League scoring record for a 38-game season as Liverpool qualified for the Champions League on a busy final day of the season. Salah’s 32nd goal - taking him past Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez, helped to secure a 4-0 victory. Just take a pause there… Salah has beaten three of the greatest players the Premier League has witnessed in just his first full season (I’m not counting his awful stint with Chelsea). Let’s hope Liverpool, and the Premier League can keep hold of him in the summer Elsewhere on the last day of the season, an injury-time goal from Gabriel Jesus gave champions Manchester City the win they needed to end their remarkable season with a record 100 points. That’s quite an achievement, but not quite as good as Arsene Wenger’s 49 game unbeaten run with his ‘Invincibles’ team. Wenger’s final game of his 22-season Arsenal career, didn’t end of quite the same high, but it was a victorious one as PierreEmerick Aubameyang’s first-half goal gave them a win at Huddersfield. Both sets of fans applauded Wenger in the 22nd minute of the game and two planes flew overhead dragging messages of support for the Frenchman.

MARTI PELLOW STARS AS ABANAZAR By Jamie Leadbeatter

A WISH GRANTED FOR ORCHARD THEATRE’S MUST-SEE PANTOMIME! MARTI PELLOW STARS AS ABANAZAR IN ALADDIN! The Orchard Theatre have announced that Wet Wet Wet frontman Marti Pellow will lead the cast of this year’s spectacular family pantomime Aladdin from Saturday 8 December playing the role of the evil sorcerer Abanazar. The hugely talented performer Marti has achieved some of the UK’s biggest number-one singles, and has regularly featured in the UK charts throughout his career, both as a solo artist and as the frontman to Wet Wet Wet. The BRIT and Ivor Novello award-winning artist has released over twenty studio albums, including his recent hit album Mysterious. Marti has enjoyed over 25 hit singles and continues to sell out with his live concerts and arena shows, including last year’s sold-out Mysterious Tour. Throughout 2018 Marti will be back on the road with his Private Collection Tour, a celebration of 30 glorious years in the music industry. In addition to his music, Marti has also starred in numerous high-profile theatre productions in the West End and on Broadway, including Chicago, Blood Brothers and the sold-out, award-winning musical Evita for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the WhatsOnStage Awards which played at the Orchard Theatre in 2014. He’s also had the privilege to work alongside Tim Rice in his concert film of Chess, and with Jeff Wayne in the international arena tour of War of The Worlds. Marti has also starred in many record-breaking theatre tours, including The Witches of Eastwick, Blood Brothers 36

and Jekyll & Hyde. Marti made his pantomime debut for Qdos Entertainment in the record-breaking 2015 Birmingham Hippodrome production of Aladdin, which he reprised at the 3000-seat SEC Armadillo in Glasgow and broke Box Office records at the Bristol Hippodrome last Christmas. In addition to starring in Aladdin, Marti has also written his own original music for the production. Joining him as Wishee Washee will be Britain’s Got Talent star Ricky K. Ricky regularly tours internationally with his unique blend of physical, observational and zany comedy, travelling the globe and entertaining millions. In 2014 Ricky auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, wowing the judges and audiences with his selfpenned routine The Fairy Tale of Love, which received a huge global response. From 75,000 applicants, Ricky got through to the live finals which were seen by over 5 million viewers. Starring as Widow Twankey will be pantomime dame extraordinaire David Robbins. David’s theatre work includes Whistle Down the Wind in the West End, Doctor Dolittle on its national tour, The Rocky Horror Show in the West End, it’s national and European tours and Goodbye Mr Chips at the Chichester Festival Theatre. No stranger to the world of pantomime, David has donned an array of outrageous outfits (which he also designs and creates) and performed in venues across the country alongside panto stalwarts Brian Conley, Lesley Joseph, Shane Richie, Gok Wan, Linda Robson and the late Lynda Bellingham. Aladdin will be produced by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest pantomime producer, and the team behind Dartford’s annual pantomime. Michael Harrison, Managing Director of Qdos Entertainment, said: “I’m thrilled Marti will be headlining our fantastic production of Aladdin at the Orchard Theatre this year. Not only does he possess a stunning voice, he is a fantastic stage performer and one of panto-land’s ultimate baddies. Playing alongside him we’ll have laughs aplenty from the fantastic Ricky K and one of the best Dame’s in the business with David Robbins, and plenty of other surprises planned.” Featuring a wish-granting genie, an evil sorcerer and the timeless tale of the Twankey family panto lovers should hop aboard a flying carpet and fly to the Box Office to secure their tickets for this year’s mustsee, genie-us family pantomime.

GETTING READY FOR YOUR HOLIDAY By Mark Broadbent So, it’s about now that people are starting to prepare for their holidays. Like many you’ve probably left it a bit late and, with a holiday looming, want to get in shape [instantly]. Whilst crash diets and extreme exercising can work short term, if you’ve done it before you’ll know all too well how quickly that all comes back in just a week or two away! Try to avoid the classic “extremes” where you starve yourself for two weeks before, then over-indulge for two weeks on holiday. This binge pattern will cause havoc on your body and leave you feeling terrible once the holiday’s over (and will also make it even more difficult next time around!). If you only have a week or two left before your holiday, then you may have left it too late. Eating sensibly for the next couple of weeks is your best bet – it may not get you the extreme weight loss that you’re after, but it’s achievable and you won’t be feeling awful. Losing 2 stone in a week or two isn’t realistic so don’t set your expectations too high if you’ve left it until now to do something about it! If you have slightly longer until your holiday and are willing to start doing something now, then good for you. You can avoid the suffering of drastic starvation diets and abstinence from all the foods you enjoy, and just start to improve your diet. Small changes done consistently always trump the 2-week panic diets. Make your changes achievable and sustainable, and set realistic goals. Keep the foods you enjoy in your diet, just reduce them or choose a slightly better option. If you love chocolate, you don’t have to deprive yourself of it, just eat less, and if you can, change to a dark chocolate option (obviously this is the same principle for any foods – chocolate might not be your thing). If you currently eat 3 “bad” meals per day (i.e. foods you know you probably shouldn’t be eating and won’t help your weight loss efforts), then reduce that to two, and replace the third with a healthier option (this doesn’t have to be a salad by the way, but do get your vegetables in!) If you can replace two or even all three of the meals with

“healthier” options, all the better. Drink more water and reduce other drinks (EVEN THE “DIET” ONES!!!) Follow the basic rules – protein at every meal, healthy fats at every meal, vegetables at every meal, reduce (but don’t eliminate) carbohydrates if weight loss is your goal and save them for the meals after your workouts. As for training, again don’t go mad. Be sensible, find something you enjoy and be consistent – don’t skip workouts. However many times a week you workout now, just increase it by one or two sessions. Don’t try to go from doing nothing, to 6 sessions a week and doublingup for two of them! It’s too much and your body (and mind) won’t cope! The realistic expectations of your goals and what’s achievable in the timeframe you have are essential to understand, or you can find yourself, like many, overdoing it and then failing because you can’t keep it up. In short, don’t go crazy. - Be realistic - Make small and achievable changes that aren’t going to test your will power to breaking point - Make better food choices but don’t deprive yourself - Increase your exercise, but not by too much or you’ll burn out or injure yourself - GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT! Some good advice can save you time, effort, stress, disappointment, and your sanity. Don’t undervalue the help of someone who knows what they’re talking about, and don’t overvalue the advice of magazines, celebrities, TV adverts, armchair trainers or well-meaning friends. And enjoy your holidays! Mark Broadbent If you need help, get in touch for Personal Training or Nutrition Coaching via

THEATRE ROUNDUP By Liz Dyer

They say time flies when you’re having fun - and that must explain why we’re already closing in on halfway through the year, because as always we’ve been spoilt for great local entertainment. May had something for the whole family, from the madcap adventures of David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny to musical nostalgia with The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas. We welcomed back a comedy legend as Joe Pasquale stepped triumphantly into the iconic role of Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, and also enjoyed the usual varied programme of music, comedy and dance. So what’s next? Well first, with summer well and truly upon us, tickets are now available for Dartford’s brilliant annual open air theatre season. Local favourites Changeling Theatre are back for another year, this time with a choice of Measure for Measure (24th July) and Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit (1st August) - or if Gilbert and Sullivan is more your thing, why not check out Illyria’s production of Pirates of Penzance (15th August)? With tickets at just £5 for Dartford residents, this is an absolute bargain of a night out. Have a look at the Dartford Council website for more details - you’ll also find info there about this summer’s fantastic free cinema nights in Central Park. As for this month, the Orchard has a musical theme going on - starting with Beautiful (5th-9th), which has taken the West End and Broadway by storm and tells the remarkable story of chart-topping music legend Carole King. Get ready to sing, dance and be surprised by how

44

many of her songs you didn’t realise you knew. And you can even have a go yourself with the Beautiful singing workshop on 9th June… Carole King is followed just a couple of days later by Marc Bolan, whose life and hits are celebrated in 20th Century Boy (11th-13th). Marking 40 years since the glam rock star’s death at the age of just 29, the show features classic T.Rex hits Ride a White Swan, I Love to Boogie and of course 20th Century Boy. Finally, at the end of the month it’s the turn of Dusty Springfield in Son of a Preacher Man (26th-30th), starring Michelle Gayle. A new musical play featuring some of the most popular songs ever written, the show tells the story of three strangers, all searching for the legendary Preacher Man, and hoping he can help them in their quest for love. And that’s not all - there’s local talent to enjoy too, as the Dartford Choral Project (19th-20th) brings together children from twelve local primary schools and Dartford Children’s Choir for this year’s concert, which is all about the theme of friendship. The children have been working towards the show since last September, so don’t miss this chance to see all their hard work come together in what promises to be a fantastic evening. As always, details of all Orchard shows can be found at orchardtheatre.co.uk. And for local and regional theatre reviews, check out theblogoftheatrethings.com.

CAR NEWS - JUNE 2018 By Dhiren Ganesh

In this month’s article we’ll bring you new model versions available in 2018 from different manufacturers around the world.

2018 Hyundai Kona Electric – The electrified version of Hyundai’s conventional Kona small SUV was planned as part of the car’s model range from the beginning, unlike many competitor vehicles. It will offer buyers a choice of power output (134 or 201bhp) and battery capacity (39 or 64kWh), with the upper-level version already certified for an electric range of 300 miles on the new. Electric uses the more sophisticated independent set-up normally kept for the four-wheel drive variants. It rides urban roads fairly well, with less of the road noise that can be associated with low-rolling resistance tyres common on electric cars, and compliantly deals with sharp-edged ruts and bumps. It has a high standard specification that encompasses an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument display, a head-up display and a premium audio system. The price is estimated to be around £29,000 and be availble from summer 2018.

2019 Tesla Model 3 – Since launching the Model S luxury car in 2012, Tesla has made a name for itself as a manufacturer of desirable and sporty electric vehicles. The new Tesla Model 3 has a lower starting price than the other Tesla models. Sitting below the Model S and the Model X SUV in the company’s range, it’s likely to be priced from about £35,000 when it arrives in the UK in 2019. In entry-level form, the Tesla Model 3 has a claimed range of 220 miles, can accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.6sec and goes onto a top speed of 130mph. The Long Range Battery version can cover up to 310 miles. On the inside the minimalist dashboard is dominated by a 15in screen that looks like it’s been nicked from somebody’s work desk, and through which you control everything from the infotainment to the air-con. The price is estimated to be around £35,000 when the car is released in 2019.

2018 Bentley Bentayga 4.0 V8 – There’s the twinturbocharged 6.0-litre W12 petrol, plus the comparatively efficient 4.0-litre V8 diesel, and now you can also have a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol, an engine shared with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Audi RS6, among other performance cars in the Volkswagen Group. The petrol V8 model benefits from the same adaptive air suspension as the W12 version, including clever active anti-roll bars. These allow the car to glide along beautifully in a straight line, absorbing lumps and bumps with an effortlessness bordering on disdain, yet still corner with remarkably little body lean for a car of such vast height and weight. This version is available now and priced from £136,200. 46
