FEATURE ARTICLE:

Gareth Johnson MP opens Dartford’s newest sixth form One of the things I’m regularly asked when I’m out and about in the constituency is what makes me proud to be the MP for Dartford. One of the first things that always comes to mind is our top quality education system. From our primary schools to our secondary schools and sixth forms, Dartford has high quality establishments with good facilities. The choice for young people at secondary level, with academies, grammar schools and a UTC amongst the options, is second to none. It is also pleasing that our schools are performing well and are successful and students are enjoying their school experience. There are many ways to judge the performance of our local primary schools but Ofsted have schools like Fleetdown and the Brent rated as outstanding. In progress made in the three ‘Rs’, schools like Westgate, The Gateway, St Anselm’s, Manor Community, Maypole and Temple Hill are all achieving fantastic results. At Craylands the pupils are above both the national and local average in mathematics. A clear direction is always needed in our schools and Oakfield, Sutton-at-Hone, Stone St Mary’s and Holy Trinity are among numerous schools in the area where leadership has been recognised by Ofsted as being strong. I’ve always thought a key test of a school is whether children are happy and well behaved and again our schools rate highly with the pupils at Sedley’s in Southfleet being referred to as ‘charming and polite’ in a recent report. At Dartford Bridge Community the pupils told inspectors the teachers were ‘firm but fun’ which perhaps explains the popularity of that school. As the area grows and more homes are built, the population is growing too and it is clear we need more school places available for children. In response to this demand, this September saw a number of new education establishments open. Cherry Orchard Primary Academy, which opened at Ebbsfleet this term, is the first of up to 12 new schools planned for the area.

8

Last month, I also had the pleasure of officially opening the new sixth form centre, EA6, at Ebbsfleet Academy. This is a great addition to the already thriving school, with the new facilities now offering students the chance to study either A-levels or the International Baccalaureate. It was great to meet the students and teachers at the school and see the new EA6 centre first-hand. By offering sixth form students a choice of which exam system to follow, it gives them the opportunity to focus on their own academic strengths. The Inspiration Academy, part of the Leigh UTC, which specialises in STEM subjects, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, also opened its doors in September to its first Year 7 pupils. At the moment the pupils are being schooled at the UTC as they wait for their new building to open in the early part of next year. This school, which will cater for Years 7 to 9, will act as a feeder school for the UTC. These new schools are vital to the success of Dartford, which is growing at a record level with thousands of people set to move into the new housing developments throughout the next decade. In fact one of the key factors for our town’s popularity is its high quality schooling. There will always be things that can be improved in our schools, we should never be complacent about their achievements but Dartford can be proud of its educational establishments. Teachers, pupils, governors and parents have combined to ensure we provide a solid start for our children and a bright future for our town.

DARTFORD LIVING MEETS ... STEPHEN OLIVER

BY KELLY GOLDSWORTHY

Born in Dartford and raised in Swanley, I have now lived in Dartford for over 30 years. I was a keen amateur photographer in my teens, developing photos in a makeshift dark room at home. My idea of being a professional photographer seemed idealistic bearing in mind careers advice for many boys was “get an apprenticeship”! So I became an electrician, continuing my photography as a hobby for some years. Later in life, I wanted to rekindle that creative spark. I set up a business producing first day covers for Royal Mail stamps. Working with my cousin Jack, a cartoonist, we created the cartoon character Phil Stamp. I was the designer and colourist. I think the decision to become an artist developed organically during that time and I ‘retired’ Phil Stamp in 2010 so I could focus on painting full-time. Mostly self-taught, my art training was supplemented by formal tuition undertaken locally. Via this route, I completed a project for Asda, my first major work - both exciting and challenging! The result was three canvases: The QEII Bridge, Brooklands Lakes and Greenhithe Village High St. It was hard work but hugely satisfying. I knew that I had found my niche. I outgrew my working space at home and am now based in the Stephen Oliver Studio and Gallery in the Orchards Shopping Centre. This is a working studio where the vast majority of my work is created and displayed for sale. Since it opened in October 2012, the gallery has been of great interest to shoppers, passers-by and visitors to Dartford. I’m inspired by nature which plays a large part in my work - particularly skies and stretching perspectives. I like to represent the ‘feel’ of nature, very often as an abstraction using various techniques in acrylic, oil or watercolour. My art evolves as I work - I try to achieve a loose interpretation of the subject, allowing the viewer to engage with the piece. One thing I am passionate about is getting other people, especially children, interested in art. I believe a great way to do this is to involve them in its creation; that's why I have enjoyed coming up with ideas for community projects.

10

We kicked off in 2014 with a large canvas ‘Saturday Market in Dartford High Street’. Around 60 people took part, painting a section each. The painting now hangs in Dartford library. I was really impressed by people's enthusiasm, and the pride they took in their contributions. Since then I’ve had the opportunity to involve even more individuals in two Alice in Wonderland themed projects - character cut-outs for ‘Alice the Musical’ staged at Ingress Park, and another large canvas ‘The Mad Tea Party’ which hangs in the Orchards Shopping Centre. Both of these celebrated the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s famous book. In 2016 I wanted to do something specifically for children. The combination of Easter and Roald Dahl’s centenary provided the perfect opportunity. Ten local schools painted giant eggs depicting Dahl’s stories and characters from their own designs, which were displayed in the Orchards Centre. This year the Art of Autism exhibition involved local schools and families, displaying over 100 works created by children and young adults on the autistic spectrum. It’s been fantastic to see such commitment from all involved – contributors, supporters and sponsors. Thank you! I plan to continue to develop my artistic practice, experimenting with different techniques and creating art for people to enjoy. I relish having the opportunity to stimulate and inspire others to get interested in art and realise that they too can tap into their creative spirit.

Giving Back to the Community by Brian Downton An Ironman Triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112 mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22 mile (42.20 km) run, raced in that order and without a break. As the Iron man event is a total distance of 140.6 miles, I’ve set my fundraising target at £14,060. If you’d like to sponsor me, you can do so here www.virginmoneygiving.com/briandownton Here are the preceding events which I have taken part in and upcoming events, both to raise money for my chosen charities and to train for the Iron Man Austria event:

As a Dartford business owner, I’ve always been passionate about giving back to the community. At Downton and Ali we take pride in supporting national and local charities through a variety of fundraising activities. We also sponsor Dartford Living and Run > Dartford. My 2017/2018 fundraising activities will culminate in me taking part in Iron Man Austria on 1st July 2018. Having been inspired by a friend, I have decided to really raise the bar on my fundraising and many events will form part of my training, some of which have already been completed. It will be a challenging year of training, but I’m really looking forward to it.

• Dunwich Dynamo - 111 mile cycle ride, overnight on 8th/9th July 2017 • Ride London 2018 - 100 mile cycle from London to Surrey Hills and back • Dartford Road Runners 10k run on August 2017 bank Holiday • Demelza 10k run on 10th September 2017 • Weymouth 70.3 Iron man on 17th September 2017 • Dartford Bridge 10k run on 24th September 2017 • Royal Parks Half Marathon run on 8th October 2017 • Openwork Foundation 2017 overseas challenge to Kerala, India - 5 days - cycling over 300km • 22nd April 2018 - The London Marathon - just a little warm up for the main event in July. • 20th May 2018 - The Grafman Middle distance Triathlon Downton and Ali are members of Openwork, so I am once again raising funds for the Openwork Foundation, Cares for Kids, which is part of the Zurich Community Trust. The Trust grants money to local children’s charities recommended by the staff and advisers within Openwork. This year I am also supporting two other very deserving charities: Demelza Hospice Care for Children, who support children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families across East Sussex, Kent and South East London. Demelza provides short breaks, emergency respite and end-of-life care, as well as bereavement support.

The Maypole Project provides support for over 100 children with complex medical needs and their families across South East London. These are children with life threatening and life limiting illnesses. The Maypole Project provides unique emotional support that is ongoing, flexible, responsive, professional and confidential. I am planning a number of other charity events. A curry night on 29th November 2017 in Dartford, a charity golf day in 2018 and a Black Tie Spring Ball on 23rd March 2018. All in aid of the three charities above.

Finally, we were very proud to be the winners of the Good for the Community Award 2017 in the Dartford Business Awards and we fully intend to continue giving back. I will be adding to my events as the Iron Man event approaches and you can read more about my fundraising activities here - www.downtonandali.org.uk/charityevents/ and also follow my progress on Twitter - twitter. com/downtonandali and Facebook - www.facebook. com/downtonandali. Life Under The Stairs by Jane Stevenson ARK I’ve been thinking, which according to my Other Half usually precludes calling in the decorators or dragging him around shops looking at new sofas or wallpaper. So he was mightily relieved when I said it wasn’t that kind of thinking. His relief was short lived after I announced I was going to have a lifestyle rethink; however, he’s used to my somewhat alternative perspective on the mundane; it’s what comes of marrying an old hippie. He doesn’t need to worry. This is something I’ve heard from others and decided to put into practice. I have almost everything I want, I’m quite a happy little thing most of the time, but I do find how others interact affects me. Whether it’s the rush of a busy day, wrapped up in our lives or just unaware of others, we are becoming a community of strangers. So, dear readers, welcome to the idea of ARK. Acts of Random Kindness. They cost nothing at all and go a long way to mending the damaged society in which we live. Of course there is a Wikipedia page for it, and I quote “A random act of kindness is a non-premeditated, inconsistent action designed to offer kindness towards the outside world.” That sums it up rather nicely. Many of us practise such acts without knowing. They are such small inconsequential actions, but often mean far more to the recipient than to us. Often we complete them without even thinking about it. It could be something as simple as opening a door for someone, helping a mum with a buggy down some stairs. Or saying thanks to the busy waiter at the coffee shop. Offering to help a neighbour who is dealing with a new baby, illness or just overwhelmed by life, by seeing if they need any shopping. Can you help someone with the school run, or share a car into work? All Acts of Random Kindness, all free and all appreciated. ARK extends in the work place too. A simple email reply thanking the sender for the information, praising their idea or wishing them a good day is often appreciated. A smile when you enter the lift, and a quick ‘good morning’ – watch your colleagues smile back, and listen as they murmur their own response. ARK can be very personal as well. Genuine compliments are treasured and often shared, allowing the recipient to replay a moment of kindness. A note in your child’s or partner’s lunch box telling them how much you love them can often mend a bad morning at school or help ease a busy work day. Every single time we perform some small act we add a positivity to the day. Everyone benefits. Us, as the donors of the act and those who receive our kindnesses. There is a long tradition of ‘pass one on’ which started in

16

Italy. One buys two coffees and leaves one to be claimed by a homeless or less fortunate person. The scheme is called ‘caffè sospeso’ and is working in many large towns and cities around the world. Not sure if it’s reached Dartford yet. It is another example of an Act of Random Kindness. And so it goes on –any small, positive and thoughtful act will help. Perhaps we should to try and incorporate the thinking behind ARK into our everyday actions. By creating a more positive mind set for ourselves will surely influence how we are with others. We could start a powerful force for good simply by being Kind. HO-HO-HO I’ve been away on my hols recently – I love this time of year when the weather is often still warm enough to sit outside, walk on the beach and take advantage of the local attractions, much quieter now the school term has restarted. We went a little earlier than usual and returned to a favourite holiday haunt. We are talking late September, so why were so many of the shops full of Christmas items? I often use several of the craft villages on the island, where I can find any number of gifts to suit my needs. I enjoy buying gifts for family and friends and tend to look whenever I am away for that something a little different. In past years, I’ve returned home with much of my Christmas shopping completed. This year there was nothing except snowmen, reindeer, angels and tree decorations on show. Even Halloween had been relegated to one table at the entrance. The pattern was repeated at a number of other outlets. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas; the whole shebang – mince pies, cards, trees, tinsel and goodwill to all men. It is one day a year I love everyone. It just seems to have started really early this year and I might run out of steam by November at this rate. I’ve no idea why – I could blame it on Brexit, global warming or switching Bake Off to channel 4 – I’ve simply not a clue why Christmas has started so early. I’ll rein in my desire to sing Jingle Bells at the top of my voice while applying sunscreen to my nose, and keep my winter woollies in store. According to my trusty weather app, it will be 22C this coming Monday – and we’re over half way through October at the time of writing. Whatever next? Snow in June? See you next month. For those of you who enjoy my mental meandering, please take a look at the link to my book. You might enjoy it. On www.amazon.co.uk search under ‘books’ for - The Other Side of Normal

TRAVEL SPOTLIGHT

in association with

TRAVEL PROTECTION

Travel broadens the mind and nurtures the soul. It should be enjoyed with a carefree spirit and an open mind. Unfortunately, the reality is not always as straight-forward and there are many pitfalls and unfortunate circumstances that can face holiday-makers. This month saw the sad collapse of Monarch, the fifth biggest airlines in the UK, has highlighted yet again the importance of protecting your holiday. The collapse led to the UK’s largest peacetime repatriation as the CAA created a ‘pop-up’ airline to bring 83,875 stranded travellers back home, costing around £60 million. However, another 300,000 future bookings have also been cancelled, creating turmoil in the travel industry and spoiling travel plans for so many families. So how can you stop your holiday from suffering similar events? And what are the different forms of travel protection that you can utilise to ensure your holiday and your money is protected? There are three main forms of protection that you should be aware of and use if you can, the CAA’s ATOL protection, trade associations like ABTA & TTA, and travel insurance.

and issues Air Travel Organisers’ Licences (ATOL). It is a legal requirement for any provider offering a package holiday to have an ATOL. Should the holiday provider become insolvent then the CAA will organise repatriation for any travellers stranded abroad and refund the cost of the holiday for those yet to travel. When Monarch collapsed the CAA brought home over 80,000 passengers on 567 flights, quite a remarkable display of organisation. Trade Organisations There are a variety of trade organisations that travel organisers can become members of, and although there is no legal requirement to be a member of any, almost all travel agents are members of one or another. The largest and most well-known is of course the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), there is also Travel Trust Association (TTA), the Global Travel Group and others. Most provide some element of consumer protection as well as a code of conduct to ensure quality of service and arbitration is cases of dispute. Whilst the organisations represent their members they also have a focus on consumer confidence and offer voluntary regulation of their members. Travel Insurance Travel insurance products offer a range of protections for consumers, usually based around medical assistance whilst abroad. Other inclusions often revolve around lost luggage, delays and holiday cancellations. Each product is different and it is advisable to seek independent advice before taking out a policy. The policy should be appropriate for the destination and type of holiday you are taking, for example certain sports will require additional coverage. So before you book your next trip, make sure you look at what protection your holiday comes with and that it meets your needs. A little preparation can help ensure your holiday is a relaxing one.

ATOL protection The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was established in 1971

MONEY ADVICE CAP’s top tips for a happier Christmas Well, Christmas is almost upon us once again. Out come the lights, decorations, carols and wrapping paper… as that song you might have heard goes: ‘Tis the season to be jolly! Except, for many, the reality is much different. For people all over the UK, Christmas is a time when stress, money worries, loneliness and loss can feel all the more difficult to deal with, and many are left feeling at their most desperate and sad. At Christians Against Poverty (CAP) we’re tackling this problem head on. Through our emergency food hamper appeal, we’re aiming to bring light, joy and faith into hundreds of households this Christmas. Visit capuk.org/ christmas to get involved. In the meantime, we’ve put together our top tips for a happier Christmas. Whether you’re living on a tight budget or not, these are things we can all do to add a little more joy to the joyful season. Spend time, not money There’s inevitably going to be pressure to spend money over the festive period, which can be daunting (and often dangerous) for those living on a low income or tight budget. Try to remember that most presents will be put away, forgotten about or even broken over time, but great memories last much longer. Spend time with family and friends, or people in your community. See what events are on at your local church – the perfect place to find good company and have an enjoyable time without spending loads of money. Quit it Here’s a thought: why not give up alcohol in December? Hear us out! For many of us a few bevvies over the festive season may have become a normality, but is it really essential in order to have a good time? Is a month really such a long time to go without? Banning the booze is proven to lift our mood AND it’s money that could be spent elsewhere. Give it a go this year and, hey, if it doesn’t work, there’s always next Christmas for an eggnog or two. Come off social media While we’re on the subject of giving things up, how about saying goodbye to social media for a while? We’ve all been there: Christmas morning and our Facebook/Instagram/ Twitter feeds are as full as a stuffed turkey with photos of piles of presents and gushing messages. And although it’s nice to see our friends showing their gratitude for

24

Website: www.capuk.org Telephone: 0800 328 0006

what they’ve received, it can leave us feeling deflated, envious and inferior. Switch it off and enjoy your own Christmas instead. Manage expectations One of the biggest anxieties around this time of year is providing for our families, giving them the big, lavish, fun Christmas we see all over the media. The children are expecting lots of presents, the in-laws are expecting a huge meal on Christmas Day, the colleagues are expecting three nights out and a financial contribution for an inflatable reindeer… ARGH! But what if we were to soften these expectations a bit? Talk to these people early on and let them know you’re doing Christmas on a budget this year. You don’t have to go into detail, it’s simply about letting them know what to expect. Count your blessings Literally – do it! There’s nothing more uplifting than making a list of all the things in your life that you’re grateful for. Times may be hard, but as CAP’s brand new strapline says, there’s always hope! Oh, and it doesn’t cost a penny. Be a friend Many people – especially the elderly – are sadly looking ahead to a Christmas on their own. According to the charity Age UK, 1.2 million older people are chronically lonely. So here’s an idea: why not volunteer and help provide companionship? Not only will you be bringing a huge amount of joy to somebody in need, but it’ll be an uplifting experience for you too – everybody wins! See ageuk.org.uk/no-one for details on how to get involved. Care for you Finally, remember to look after yourself and those around you. If you feel that you may be suffering with depression or have other mental health concerns, call Mind, the mental health charity, on 0300 123 3393 (weekdays 9am to 6pm). If your financial situation has got to the point where you need advice about debt, call CAP on 0800 328 0006 (weekdays 9:30am to 5pm). Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is determined to reduce hardship in the UK, through the local Church. It does this through 605 poverty fighting services, including 293 debt centres, 162 job clubs, 78 release groups for those struggling with life-controlling dependencies, and 72 life skills groups for people living on a low income. All CAP’s services are available to everyone, regardless of age, gender, faith or background. See capuk.org

Weekly Recipe: Brussels Tops with a Creamy Mushroom Pasta Ingredients (Serves 4): 2 Brussels tops, only the leaves

200g mushrooms, sliced

1 white onion, finely chopped

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

150g-200g smoked bacon, chopped

100g toasted chestnuts, bashed

300g-350g dried pasta

salt & pepper

Cheese Sauce: 100g mature cheddar cheese

25g salted butter

25g plain flour

salt & pepper

600ml milk Method: 1. First of all, make the cheese sauce. Melt the butter in a sauce pan, then add the flour and stir continuously for roughly 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and slowly stir in the milk to create a smooth sauce. Return to the heat and bring to the boil, continue stirring. Allow the sauce to simmer for 8-10 minutes and season well. Stir in the cheese and allow it to melt. Set aside until it is needed. 2. Boil the kettle and fill a large saucepan, place on the heat and bring to the boil. Salt the water and add the pasta, it will need roughly 10 minutes to cook. 3. Meanwhile, put a frying pan on a medium heat, add a drop of oil then, the onion, mushrooms and bacon to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes. Next add the Brussels leaves and garlic, cover with a lid, reduce the heat a little and cook for a further 5-8 minutes. 4. All the components should be cooked and ready to all be combined. Drain the pasta, then return to the pan over a low heat. Next add all the ingredients from the frying pan and lastly mix in the cheese sauce and make sure it is thoroughly combined. 5. Before serving, put some chestnuts into a sandwich bag and bash them with a rolling pin until they are a chunky consistency. Pop them into the empty frying pan and toast for a couple of minutes, be careful not to let them catch as they will taste very bitter. Garnish the served pasta and serve. Toms Top Tips: I would recommend swapping the bacon for some left over roast chicken. Or you can completely get rid of meat and swap for Quorn™ pieces. I would also recommend to not be tempted to make this is in smaller batches as you can easily dilute the flavour, I would make this in batches enough for four or more people and any leftover you can freeze for those nights when you can’t think of anything to cook.

SPORTS NEWS

BAV’S SPORTING COMMENT Lewis Hamilton was saying all the predictable things after the Japanese Grand Prix, about there being a long way to go, a lot of points still available, and so on. That was after a controlled performance to take his fourth victory in five races. His title rival Sebastian Vettel had left the track earlier, but before he did, the German spoke briefly to some television crews. And he, too, said all the right things: of course the title is harder now, but it’s not over yet; we still have a chance; we can be strong for the final four races. Deep down, though, both men know what Suzuka meant. Hamilton has extended his championship lead to 59 points with only 100 still available. Barring some kind of miracle collapse, the 32-year-old Briton will surely win a fourth title this year. It is just a question of when.

Upcoming events in November include: 11: Rugby union - England v Argentina 12: Formula 1 - Brazilian Grand Prix, Sao Paulo 12-19: Tennis - ATP World Tour Finals, London 18: Rugby union - England v Australia 23-27: Cricket - Australia v England, first Ashes Test, Brisbane 24-26: Tennis - Davis Cup final 25: Rugby union - England v Samoa 26: Formula 1 - Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (final race of the season) 29 Nov-10 Dec: Snooker - UK Championship, York

DARTFORD DISTRICT SCHOOLS FA FOOTBALL FESTIVALS

The Dartford District Schools FA have held four festivals since schools returned in September. The year 3/4 Soccer 6’s and year 1/2 Fast Fives took place with thirteen schools participating. The year 3/4 soccer six festival was the third time it had taken place, it’s an excellent opportunity to introduce boys and girls to schools football. The year 1/2 Fast Fives was our first attempt to run something for KS1 children. This is an introduction to the game and a chance for children to play in a team environment. The Annual 7aside qualifying tournament for boys and girls teams as always takes place in the first week of October. This year we have set a new record with 19 schools bringing girls teams and 22 schools in attendance with boys teams. Next season the aim is for all twenty five affiliated Dartford District footballing schools to attend.

have given the year 6 district managers plenty of new names for the squad. Eight schools have qualified for girls finals day (Joydens Wood, Wentworth, Oakfield, Sutton at Hone, St Anselms, Bean, Dartford Bridge & Darenth) and seven schools will be returning for the boys finals (West Hill, Holy Trinity, Hextable, Joydens Wood, Craylands, Darenth & St Anselms) These tournaments have been a fantastic credit to all involved. We look forward to crowning the 2017/18 champions.

Over the two days there was plenty of excellent football on display by schools, in those teams there were some outstanding individual performances. These tournaments

Local Entertainment Theatre Roundup by Liz Dyer

This month’s theatre gets off to a spooky start, as movie favourites The Addams Family move in - on Halloween, appropriately enough. In this original story by the writers of Jersey Boys, Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with - shock horror - a nice guy from a respectable family. Only Gomez knows, but can he keep the secret…? Starring Samantha Womack, Les Dennis and Carrie Hope Fletcher, the show makes its final UK stop at the Orchard before heading overseas, so don’t miss out! And that’s not the only show ending its tour in Dartford; the Addams are followed from 6th November by the final stop for Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine. The story of a bored Liverpool housewife who runs away to Greece, the show premiered in 1986 and was later made into an Oscar-winning movie. This is the first major revival, to mark the show’s 30th anniversary - and what better way to escape the November gloom than a bit of Greek sunshine? Next up is another movie classic, Grease (21st-25th), the original high school musical, starring The Wanted’s Tom Parker and former Strictly star Louisa Lytton. Both the story and the songs need little introduction, so get your tickets now for the show that was voted number 1 in Channel 4’s top 100 musicals.

44

On 26th November there’s another treat in store: the Community Showcase, featuring performances from the Orchard Youth Theatre, Orchard Theatre Group and Community Choir. All these groups are open to everyone - check out the Orchard Theatre website for more details. It’s not long now until panto season, so if you haven’t got your tickets yet for this year’s spectacular show starring Louie Spence and Michelle Collins, there’s still time to book. Or if you’re not a fan of Cinderella, you might prefer Sleeping Beauty at Woodville Halls, starring Linda Lusardi, or to see Jessie Wallace in Snow White at the Churchill in Bromley. Speaking of Bromley, there are some great shows coming up there this November too, for those willing to travel a bit further afield to get their theatre fix. If you missed the Agatha Christie thriller A Murder is Announced a few weeks back in Dartford, there’s another chance to see it at the Churchill from 7th-11th. The West Wickham Operatic Society will be performing My Fair Lady from 14th-18th, and at the end of the month Will Young and Louise Redknapp take to the stage in Cabaret. Read local and London theatre reviews at theatrethings.blog.

Fitness

The Mindset of Healthy Eating Whilst, at the base level, weight gain or weight loss do come down to energy balance (calories in vs. calories out), it’s really not as simple as “eat less, move more”. Aside from the hormonal perspective which can completely throw the numbers out the window and dictate what happens to those calories, or where you burn your energy from, there is the mental aspect of nutrition and dieting. If you have the iron willpower of a devout monk and can happily go through life eating plain chicken and broccoli (the type of diet you expect to have to follow on a diet), then by all means go ahead, and the calories in/out model may work for you. But, if you’re like most people, your diet doesn’t work like that. Your emotions, thoughts and feelings dictate what you want to eat and when, and guide the decisions you make around food and drink. There’s a lot of hype about mindfulness appearing at the moment, and for good reason. Many of us are completely mindless when it comes to eating. We fancy a chocolate bar so we go and get one. We eat in front of the TV and don’t stop until the plate’s clear or the popcorn is empty. Many of our decisions around food and drink are automatic and go unquestioned – we’re not thinking about what we’re doing. Everyone knows what foods they should eat more or less of, and quite often we feel guilty about what we’ve ‘just eaten’, but the guilt comes after the mindless act, and rarely pops up before to question what we’re about to do. What you need to do is work out what it is you want, what steps you think you’ll need to take to move in the right direction, what things might get in the way of that, and what actions you can take to prepare for those obstacles. You need to take the time to sit and think about this and get clear on what it is you want and need to do. Write it down (don’t skip this part, writing it down makes it more real and will help to cement things in your mind). In order to maintain your healthy diet you need to fully understand why you’re doing it, and also the reasons you may not be doing it now or that might catch you off-guard. If you’re trying to follow a strict diet but your partner doesn’t want to – it makes things harder. Find a suitable compromise that will move you towards your goals without depriving your partner of what they want. If they don’t value the same things (health/fitness) as you, then they should at least be supporting you, not making things more

difficult. If not, are you willing to sacrifice your (and possibly your children’s/future children’s) health for them? If you make the excuses of “There’s nothing healthy in the house”, “I don’t have time to prepare a healthy meal”, “I just really need a drink” etc. then you need to sit and work out how to remedy that. Do you need to take a week to clear out the bad food in your kitchen and stock up on healthier foods so they’re always at hand? Do you need to find some quick, easy recipes or “go-to” meals for when you’re in a rush? Is a stressful day just an excuse to have a drink? Does the drink really help with that? Or does it just make you feel better because you think it’ll help? Again, this is very psychological – many people believe that the drink will help but in reality, they’ve just convinced themselves that’s the case when really, it’s doing nothing! Find something else that you believe will help you destress like running, yoga, meditation… and do that instead. You need to value yourself and build confidence that you can do it, and you do deserve to be fit and healthy. If you don’t believe this, delve a bit deeper and work out the issues that come to light. There might be some difficult things to deal with, but if you can do this, it may pave the way for a very different future. Start small and as you build confidence, you can add more and more healthy habits to your lifestyle until it’s almost unrecognisable from the previous, unhealthy You. You can change yours and your family’s health for the better – who wouldn’t want that?! Pay attention to what, when and how you eat. Make smart choices and think about your decisions. If it’s not conducive to your beliefs and goals, make a better choice! But do it before, not after! If you’ve taken the time to sit and really think about this, you’ll be more likely to catch yourself before you eat something that’s going to make you feel bad afterwards. Dhiren’s Auto News November 2018 Range Rover

This is a facelift of a 2013 model which keeps it fresh to complete against the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. Changes to the styling includes a revised grille with a new gloss-black surround and widened air vents in the front bumper. The interior is the adoption of a dual-screen infotainment set-up called Touch Pro Duo, features two 10.0in touchscreens – with one controlling traditional infotainment functions and a lower screen to handle vehicle and climate controls. The facelift includes the addition of a plug-in hybrid option and combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 398bhp. Prices for the facelifted Range Rover start at £79,595, which is a rise of £2,800 compared with today’s car. The plug-in hybrid Range Rover will cost over £86,565. The facelift will be available from early 2018. 2017 Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is a small SUV and is like a raised verison of an i20, with its rivals the Renault Captur and Seat Arona. A 118bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol with a six-speed manual gearbox or a turbocharged 175bhp

46

In this month’s article we’ll bring you a new face lifted old classic and a brand new small SUV model and a new electric brand.

1.6 with a seven-speed auto will be available at launch and 1.6 diesel will join later. Inside, there is room for two tall adults on the front seat but might be a squeeze on the rear seats and the boot size is small compared to its rivals. Huyndai is offering interior trim colours to match the car’s exterior and there are quirky touches such as matching seatbelts. Hyundai’s infotainment system, while obviously surpassed by more expensive models, is among the best in class here with a 5.0in display, DAB radio and Bluetooth available on the entry-level cars. Hyundai offers 16in alloy wheels, air-con, cruise control, electric front and rear windows and automatic emergency braking as standard on entry-level cars. Prices start from £16,195 available from November 2017. 2019 Polestar 1

This is Volvo’s performance sub-brand Polestar - taking on Tesla and BMW i with its own range of bespoke electric models. The first car is the Polestar 1 a luxurious four-seat grand coupé that will go on sale in mid-2019. Among the car’s innovations is so-called phone-as-key technology, which allows the owner to share a virtual key with other people to gain access to the vehicle. The Polestar 1 is powered by a pair of electric motors that, together, produce 215bhp and are supported by a 2.0-litre petrol engine – meaning a combined output of 592bhp and can travel 93 miles on electric power alone. While the Polestar 1 is a hybrid, all future Polestar models will be fully electric. The interior layout to the same as the existing S90 and V90, with the same tablet-style infotainment screen too. It is expected Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity to be available alongside other connected services. You won’t be able to buy a Polestar 1 in the traditional sense. Instead, you’ll order the car online and subscribe to Polestar on a two or three-year basis. That subscription grants features including pick-up and delivery options and servicing. Volumes will be limited, though, with Polestar only planning to sell 500 units of the 1 each year and all left-hand drive.

Gardening Hints and Tips - November Tender Plants Tender plants won’t appreciate being kept out in the cold – so move them somewhere protected from frost and cold winds. We have an excellent selection of cold frames and heaters to give protection and beat off the worst of the winter weather. Plants that are hardier, but still sensitive to winter cold, will appreciate a thick mulch of bark and even covering with fleece and bubble wrap during the coldest weather. Fruit Create your own fruit garden – now’s an excellent time to plant fruit trees and bushes, and we have a superb range available. To ensure bumper crops, plant with plenty of organic matter and slow-release fertiliser. Make sure you train bushes where necessary, and use stakes and ties for fruit trees. Composting Don’t throw away your spent bedding plants, kitchen waste and other plant material – turn them into valuable compost for improving your soil and mulching your beds. And fallen tree leaves can be turned into leafmould – the perfect soil improver and mulch, especially for rhododendrons, azaleas and other woodland plants. Making good compost and leafmould is easy with our wide range of compost bins, compost and leafmould accelerators, leaf rakes and collectors. Cyclamen and azaleas Brighten up your home this winter with our superb quality colourful azaleas and cyclamen. They’re easy to look after – just put them somewhere cool and in good, indirect light. Keep the compost moist, and feed regularly for best results. Evergreen shrubs If your garden is looking a bit dull and lacks structure, brighten it up with evergreen shrubs. We have a fabulous range to choose from – many of which also have other attractions – such as flowers and berries – to provide colour all year round. Get newly-planted evergreen shrubs off to the best possible start by planting with compost and slow release fertiliser.

Lift dahlias, cannas, begonias Once the first frost has blackened the foliage of dahlias, it’s time to carefully lift the tubers for overwintering in a cool but frost-free place. Remove any loose soil and hang them upside down for a few days to drain any water in the stems. Then remove all dried soil, label and store them in just damp compost. The tubers of cannas and large flowered begonias will also need lifting. Canna tubers are also stored in just damp compost, but begonias should be stored dry in nets. Containers for winter and spring You can’t beat planted containers for brightening up gardens and patios throughout the autumn, winter and spring months – and they also make perfect presents. We have plenty of exciting ready planted containers for you to just pick up and take away, or you can plant one yourself. Plants of the month Ensure your garden remains colourful throughout winter with our plants of the month. There’s plenty to choose from including: winter-flowering heathers, winter jasmine, Viburnum bodnantense, Viburnum farreri, Viburnum tinus and mahonias. And don’t forget plants grown for their berries, colourful stems and the huge range of evergreens available. Pest watch Although most pests and diseases are less active in autumn and winter, be vigilant for problems, and deal with them as soon as they’re seen. Houseplants and plants overwintered in greenhouses and frames are especially susceptible to pests, but can be quickly helped with a pesticide spray. Maintaining a high humidity around most foliage houseplants – especially those in centrally-heated houses – will help keep them strong and healthy and help reduce red spider mite attacks. The reverse is true in greenhouses and frames where high humidity can lead to problems with grey mould and other diseases, so reduce watering and provide good ventilation where necessary.
