REINT 2012 Large Agency of the Year
B U SIN ES SE S that have stood the test of time By Melinda Barlow
Darwin is today and always has been a city of reinvention. We’ve been stampeded in the rush for gold, evacuated and decimated by war and weather and consistently dealt with ‘boom or bust’ conditions. Darwin has bustled along with an eclectic population, and each new arrival brings another dimension to our city. We are constantly labeled as having a ‘transient population’, which is an inevitable result of a town in constant flux. Whether searching for treasures, or cashing in on tragedy, people are all here for a reason, and they just keep coming. The more people there are, the more everybody else finds opportunity in the need to adapt. So we build supply chains, we find them jobs, we house them and we feed them and somewhere in there we find a life for ourselves as well.
One thing that remains through all the highs and lows is a strong work ethic and a commitment to a healthy working life. It seems there is more of a distinction now though between ‘resourceful’ and ‘entrepreneurial’. Many of our businesses have stood the test of time through necessity. Thousands of miles from their homelands, and with families to feed, often setting up shop was the only solution for making the best of their day to day lives. Then there are the businesses that ‘just happen’. Many of our businesses in this month’s feature started on the simplest of premise. A thought turned into a conversation. A need was identified, then a shingle hung out, and that turned into some customers. Decades passed, countless clients and staff walked through their doors, and an institution was made. The ‘longevity’ in the business may not be in the years of the company but its people, and the cumulative expertise of
an experienced team will secure a business’ future through anything. The talent pool in one office alone could run a small nation, and the collective global experiences mean Darwin reinforces the concept that it is in fact a small world after all. When you are a business owner it is rare you get the chance to reflect on your achievements, and think about what exactly has worked for so long and why. Most of the businesses in this month’s feature share the same opinion – the key to success and longevity is looking after your customers, having excellent quality products and being passionate about what you do. Those fundamentals are important but mean nothing in the aftermath of a cyclone, or in the midst of the global financial crisis. Our business owners run highly functioning communities. They are hard working Territorians, deeply connected families and passionate advocates for Darwin’s future.

to deal with, approachable with great product knowledge. I am passionate about what I do, love meeting new people. The difference in service I offer is honesty, transparency, empathy and total professionalism matched with the best possible results.
POSITION: Sales Professional
WHAT IS YOUR POINT OF DIFFERENCE IN THE SERVICE YOU OFFER YOUR CLIENTS: I try to offer a win win win situation. A win for the vendor, and a win for the buyer, is a win for me. That means offering stress free transactions for the clients so that everyone is satisfied at the end of the deal. Often you hear of people who had a rough time with a sale, that an agent probably didn’t do as much as they could have to facilitate the sale. This is what I want to avoid. You can’t be in an industry like this for more than 20 years if you take shortcuts and dupe people along the way.

Real estate is a competitive business, particularly in Darwin, but the strong united team at Real Estate Central just keeps getting stronger. Braden Menzies and his support crew, many of whom worked with him when he first started the agency, are excited about the current state of the Darwin market and the fresh informed perspective they bring to their work, as a 100% local team. There are now 40 members of staff on board bringing countless years of experience to the agency, making them the true Territory experts for your property needs. Their commitment to the people of Darwin and dedication to providing a stress free experience at what can be one of the most significant times in someone’s life is the key to the company’s ongoing success. They work hard to keep up to date with developments that affect the Territory and make it their business to know what is happening with Darwin’s future. With an invested interest in the city’s growth, they have good reason to want to see everyone prosper and this attitude will be what secures Real Estate Central’s position as one of the finest agencies in the country. To showcase the true keys to the success of an agency you need only look to its people. We have selected 11 of their bright stars, who together bring over 150 years experience to the job. We asked who they are, how they do what they do and what it is they love the most about their job, and unsurprisingly they were united in their responses – making people happy, getting great results and working with the professional dynamic people at Real Estate Central.
Although the business itself may be 5 years young, the wealth of knowledge and experience amongst the team at Real Estate Central far exceeds the company’s youth. The team of trusted agents, with many years of product knowledge, are a vibrant and dynamic group, passionate about getting people the results they want.

PA R A P FINE FOODS As far as Darwin institutions go, there are few that can match the deep-rooted history of the Pantazis family. When Rene and Paul first met in Darwin in the booming days after the war, their only priority was to work hard and make a decent living. Little did they know they would create a small empire that would become one of the most dearly loved features of the Darwin landscape – Parap Fine Foods.

How to keep tabs on all your receipts using
TAX RECEIPT LOG Are you always losing receipts that you should be claiming back both the expense and the GST? Did you know that the ATO is totally OK with a photo of the receipt as evidence?
Tax Receipt Log is available in the AppStore and AndroidMarket. It lets you take a photo from your phone or tablet and post it directly into the correct expense category in your chart of accounts. First you need to upload the expense categories to the app. It's a bit tedious but a small investment in saving future time. And

their website has a great step-by-step users guide (taxreceiptlog. com). Then it's just click, insert the numbers and any notes then post for fuel receipts, coffee receipts, stationery, travel, parking etc! You can then email the whole file to your bookkeeper accountant or boss as a report or in a format (.csv) that allows it be easily imported into MYOB, Xero, Quicken, Quickbooks etc. Whether you are a sole operator or a business with a large staff you need to keep track of these expenses. Critical ELEMENTS
to Recruiting There is no right or wrong answer for effective recruitment. Having said that, many employers still don’t plan for recruitment, or they recruit on an ad hoc basis with little strategy in mind. More often than not, many employers rely on traditional recruitment methods that in no way reflect their changing environment, nor the communication means of their potential employees.

RETIRE FROM YOUR JOB, but not from life
Retirement – is it a time to celebrate or a time of regret?
There are so many reasons why learning languages is important. Darwin Languages Centre provides quality after hours language programs for school students of all ages. Languages include: English, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog. Monday to Wednesday at DLC, 1 Nemarluk Drive, Ludmilla (4:00pm until 6:00pm) Thursday at Driver Primary (4:00pm until 6:00pm) Fees: $100 per term per student or $150 per family (discounts apply)
Retirees can share their wealth of skills and knowledge with our youth.
Many retirees wake up one morning without a job to go to, without a routine to follow, and without co-workers to share their day. For some, their job has been their life and suddenly it is replaced with freedom. Freedom to make new friends, indulge in hobbies or set out on new adventures overseas and around their own country, or to put some ticks against their ‘bucket list’. Most people think about their retirement financially, but many are unprepared about the psychological and lifestyle changes they will face, as retirement can unexpectedly bring a life filled with challenges instead of joy. The abrupt change from a rigid routine to days of doing literally nothing can be very stressful and many retirees suffer depression from no longer experiencing the meaningful challenges and fulfillment that their former job provided. Women generally have more networks outside of the work environment so usually retirement means more time to relax or even take on extra community service. On the other hand, men may experience a loss of identity and feel robbed of their worth and power at retirement. Some have never involved themselves in community work and
haven’t yet considered volunteering as a way of overcoming these issues in retirement. It is fine to retire from a job, but there is no need to retire from life. Volunteering can fill the void and help retirees become fulfilled by giving them a reason for being here, a reason to get up in the morning and face the challenges and successes that the day can bring. Existing voluntary or charitable organisations in public health, social services, youth development, aging and education may need to flexible to absorb retirees as volunteers by taking into account their interests and preferences. They should take the lead in helping to identify and develop new volunteer opportunities by using this growing market and their extensive career and life experiences. The positive effect of volunteering on physical and mental health is due to the personal sense of accomplishment an individual gains from their volunteer activities, by having fun, making new friends and networks and by sharing their skills with people and organisations in need. GRATITUDE
in the workplace
There are usually two types of businesses who ask me to work with them. The first are businesses who have been in operation for a couple of years and have hit a plateau in staff performance, financial gain or personal satisfaction. Experience it all at the DARWIN ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE Things are changing at the Darwin Entertainment Centre, and you’re invited to be a part of it.
New Darwin Entertainment Centre General Manager, Alan James, says there’s even more reason to head to “Your Centre” for great shows, great service and great facilities. With more than 30 years working in Australia’s rock’n’roll industry, Alan knows what an audience wants and he’s making sure we get it. “Tribute show ‘Time Warp’ will have you singing along to Rocky Horror Picture Show classics. It’s a little bit cheeky, and a whole lot of fun,” Alan says. “Award-winning production “Animal Farm” comes to Darwin on 18 April, combining physical theatre with storytelling to bring George Orwell’s tale of the corruption of power and greed to life. “There’ll be no other show like it in the Territory this year. “April has plenty to offer music lovers too. “Following performances at the Byron Bay Blues Festival and St Kilda Festival, Shaun Kirk will be showcasing his new blues and soul album, “The Wick Sessions”, on Friday 26 April. “Darwin band Worldfly returns to the Centre to debut their new album on Saturday 20 April. When they last played here, Worldfly sold out – and I’m sure this show will be no different.” And the new Veranda Bar is now open on Friday evenings from 5:30pm. “Enjoy a pre-show drink, or just sit back with some great live music to kick start the weekend. With drinks now allowed in to shows, there’s no need to rush.” Experience it all this April. Visit www.yourcentre.com.au

Dr. Daena Murray (Curator Emeritus, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory) wrote of Bryans work: ‘Taking cues from a diverse range of stimuli offered by life in the Top End, Bryan Bulley in his 20-year practice has created a plethora of imaginary worlds inhabited by creatures great and small, human and animal an in-between. In addition there is an incongruity in the fantasies, as they provoke laughter and empathy through exaggerating the familiar, but often suggest, as well, menace or alienation.’

THE STERLING MANAGEMENT SERVICES INAUGURAL
Chairperson's Dinner Sterling Management Services provides strata management services to Darwin, and Managing Director Phil Doyle brings more than 20 years experience to their offerings. Sterling Management Services recently held the Inaugural Chairperson’s Dinner at Pee Wee’s at the Point to recognise the hard work of body corporate chairperson Leigh Eldridge.
In his role as the chairperson of The Bayview Management Corporation over the last 12 years, Leigh is one of the longest serving chairpersons and has shown an admirable commitment to the role. Always taking time to consider the issues, he discusses the options with his management and his committee before proceeding with what is then a fully informed decision. Phil Doyle explained the reasons behind the chairperson’s dinner. “Sterling Management Services’ core commitment is to assist the chairperson in their role. We aim to provide the best possible resources for him/her to do their job and now, with this annual dinner will also have the opportunity to recognise the chairpersons for their efforts. We believe that this dinner and the award demonstrates commitment to our body corporate members and we are serious about achieving our goals. Being the chairperson of a body corporate can be a time consuming job and in some cases a thankless task. It is a voluntary role and these days has the added burden of a number of possible risks. The compliance requirements for body corporates have become more onerous, requiring the chairperson to have a more comprehensive understanding of their responsibilities. Sterling Management Services makes every effort to inform and educate its committees and members as to the risks involved. The increased risks make it an even greater commitment from the individual willing to take on the role of chairperson, and therefore one we believe should be recognised appropriately.” The dinner was attended by a number of staff and Leigh was surprised and delighted to accept his gift and to be recognised as Sterling Management Services Chairperson of the year.

M&Aculinary S T ER delights CHE FS By Melinda Barlow
After another dull night on the couch, with the same old food and one of those cooking shows for company, isn’t it time you got out of the house? Sure, the weather’s been less than average. We have all sweltered through our days, longing for the elusive monsoonal rains, and then when they came, they provided only momentary relief. But April is here, the steam will lift, the clouds will part and the delicious sea breezes will be with us again. Great weather goes hand in hand with dining out so what are you waiting for? Stop watching OTHER people eat on TV and get out there!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but Darwin has an incredible selection of cafes and restaurants at the moment and as our population grows, there will be more and more incredible food for us to choose from. Those of us, who regularly call the place home, also know that we live in one of the most beautiful locations in the country and this means eating out feels like a holiday most of the time. We have magnificent views, loads of outdoor dining and some of the best waterfront tables to be found. Australian cuisine has come a long way since the crockpot days of the 70’s and today’s food is equal to that of any other country in the world. Where Australian cities are concerned however, we have the advantage in Darwin, as rather than a lot of variations on the same theme as happens from one city to the next, our chefs are passionate and creative, true to their surroundings as well as their heritage and committed to great produce. Southern chefs can be a combination of these things, but rarely all of them at once. Our food reflects the spirit of our population – frontier Australian at heart, but with the essence of where each of us have come from, providing the soul in our dishes. We seem to have our own sub cultures of food in the Top End - modern Territorian, Territory Greek, Asian fusion, contemporary pub food. Whatever you want to call it, our chefs are a unique
breed and have come from far and wide to cook for us right here in Darwin. Here they find the freshest of ingredients, not fresh from the plane, but fresh from the boat. Crunchy Asian greens, and exotic fruits in abundance. Produce native to our part of the world that is so familiar to us and so readily available. Anything we want to cook with, in, or on is here for us. The tourists come to eat at our markets, to taste our crocodile, and to catch our big fish, and meanwhile we continue about our lives, often taking all of this for granted as it is such in inherent part of our daily life. We really do not know how lucky we are. After days of research, meeting the chefs, chatting about what they do, why they do it and tasting some of their finest dishes I am convinced that Darwin has some of the most exciting food this country has to offer. Our seafood is cooked how seafood’s meant to be eaten – simple and fresh. We do Greek food better than Greece, Italian to die for and plenty of modern Australian that reflects our European beginnings, and don’t get me started on the Asian food. Indonesian, Thai, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Filipino, Singaporean, you can have anything you want from soup to duck to noodles to dumplings. The best part is that nobody else knows. So get off the couch, and hit the streets. Where will you be eating tonight?

Restaurant Finz restaurant at the Mantra hotel offers contemporary dining in a fabulous harbourside location. Situated at the Doctor’s Gully end of the esplanade, Finz’ floor to ceiling windows frame the picture postcard views outside, of palm trees gently swaying in the breeze, with glimpses of the harbor beyond the cool shady parklands of the esplanade. A dining destination for more than 15 years, many locals will know the restaurant’s latest incarnation as Finz for its great seafood menu. Executive chef Ernie Brown has been there for 3 years now and has developed a strong menu, of local produce where possible, with a predominantly Asian influence – an obvious choice with Darwin’s availability of such good quality Asian ingredients. An NT local, Ernie has been in the Top End all of his life, apart from an 8-year stint in Brisbane where he trained as a chef. Staying on there after his apprenticeship, Ernie continued to extend his skills, and gathered his vast experience in restaurants in Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland before returning home to the Territory. Ernie has a passion for local ingredients, and
good presentation. “I always hope to use fresh and local ingredients. I believe in taking care and time with the produce that you have and presenting it in a different way. There’s an art to presenting food, and I think presentation matters as much as flavor. It’s important to put a little bit of love into what you’re producing.” So with all of that in mind, locals will be delighted to learn Finz is currently offering a $15 lunch special. There is a choice of 5 menu items, including a gourmet wagyu beef burger, a refreshing Thai beef Salad and a lightly spiced peri peri chicken wrap, plus a free soft drink or coffee. For lunch with friends, business talks or just a tranquil escape from the office, Finz has air-conditioned indoor dining, poolside tables to enjoy the sea breezes and seating inside at the bar for a more casual option. Fully licensed and opening for lunch from 11.30am – 3pm Finz offers that unique combination of great food, fabulous location, and with the $15 lunch special – excellent value for money.

Pee Wee’s at the Point is well known for it’s great location and the dry season is when the race begins for one of those much-coveted weekend dinner reservations. The location and the atmosphere are only part of the deal however as chef and owner Simon Matthews and head chef Paul Joyes have recently unveiled their spectacular new menu that Simon believes surpasses what Pee Wee’s has offered before now. “We really are putting out some great food at the moment. In the 11 years I’ve been here, Paul is certainly the best chef we’ve ever had. He and I have worked really hard over the last 6 months to come up with our new menu and our food today is the best it’s ever been.” Clearly that Gold Plate award last year has solidified the team’s commitment to providing Darwin diners with an experience they will not soon forget.

dining
at Pee Wee’s This month Darwin Foodies visit fine dining favourite Pee Wee’s at the Point. We’re seated outside on the veranda where we enjoy the cool ocean breeze and spectacular ocean view definitely one of the best dining locations you’ll get in Darwin and it’s very peaceful too. Our entrees were all fantastic. Particularly the perfectly cooked fat and juicy scallops and the crunchy soft shell mud crab. For mains we went with signature dishes of double roasted duckling and the five spice braised pork. The duck gives a wonderful aromatic burst of flavour when you pop it into your mouth with everything else on the plate harmoniously working together. The pork belly was juicy and tender, pretty damn good on its own. However, combine the pork with the apple sauce and citrus braised cabbage and you have a recipe for pure awesomeness, a taste sensation made in heaven. Best of all is the perfectly cooked strip of crackling. Top marks for this dish. The service during our dinner was excellent. It wasn’t busy with only 8 or so tables occupied so the three knowledgeable and friendly staff paid us plenty of attention without being too intrusive. Pee Wee’s at the Point does fine dining and it does it very well. Every plate is a piece of artwork cooked with great skill and plated with care. Definitely a go-to location if you’re on a date and need to impress or if you just want to eat something delicious.

SEAFOOD is for all ages
The Northern Territory Seafood Council’s CEO asked that I do a piece telling parents that their kids should be eating seafood at least three times a week. I can forgive her for this sin because, as yet, has no kids of her own. Fortunately I have a few and know perfectly well telling parents how to bring up, feed, discipline, or educate their own kids when you have none or even if you have ten is simply not appreciated or wanted.
So I will rightly assume we all know the health benefits of seafood. I will also assume like me you neither have the time nor the funds to cook fish, bugs or prawns for 3,4,5 kids plus ring ins three nights a week!! Let's be honest Darwin is one of the most social places in Australia so the chances of only having to cook for your own kids for dinner are slim, their friends too are often at the table. So we need something cheap and easy and I guess for most parents what doesn't firstly spring to mind is seafood. There are however some great seafood options for kids. These are some favourites from our house; Fish Fingers / Cakes: Some of our local retailers produce fish fingers and fish cakes from fresh local fish. They taste magnificent and are cheap enough to feed a dozen kids!! Better still they are made from the off cuts of fresh local fish ensuring we best utilise our resources. NT’s Blacktip Shark is a great seafood option for kids. It has no bones has a great taste and is generally cheaper than many of the other fish species. At my place we even cut into cubes and place on skewers for the BBQ. I know myself how good it feels to give the kids a good feed of fish, but it doesn't need to break the bank or take hours to prepare. Both the local shark and locally made NT fish fingers can be kept in the freezer for when needed. And never be afraid to ask your retailer about their specials you may be pleasantly surprised. For more info on the health benefits of seafood see www.supportntcaught.com.au and remember to ask if it’s local and Support NT Caught.

They say when one door closes another one opens, and this was certainly the case for Nicola and Michael Coleman. While shopping at the Portly Gentleman in Cavenagh street one day, Michael learned the business was closing down, and recognizing the need for plus size clothing in Darwin, the seeds of It Fits were planted. Originally stocking plus sized clothes for men; it was only a matter of time before Nicola and Michael decided to add women’s fashion as well and that decision has certainly paid off. “It seems that when people are a bit larger, the fashion options available to them go downhill with a more limited selection of colours and designs available” says Nicola. “It’s really nice when people walk in the door and then realise that what we’ve got available is very fashionable - great designs, good labels and they can walk out the door feeling really good about themselves.” It Fits stocks a diverse range of popular brands, and has a commitment to quality Australian made products and Australian brands such as Jimmy Stuart, Maddy Petrulis from Melbourne, and Catherine Halfpenny from the Gold Coast. They also have a good selection of pieces from the Body Peace Bamboo clothing collection from Byron Bay. 60

Other women’s brands include Black Pepper and Extra Pepper, and the well-loved clothing made in Australia for Lorissa. The Lorissa brand has a reputation for producing high quality and great fitting clothes for bigger sizes. They concentrate not just on length and width but important details such as armhole and neck hole size too. As well as a good selection of casual wear, eveningwear, and corporate clothing, It Fits also has in stock cool urban t-shirts from Chisel Jeans, and renowned brands Gloweave, Tarocash, Lichfield and of course RM Williams. The larger size man and woman need not miss out on the ball either as It Fits has a small range of beautiful ball gowns for the ladies and great brand suits – Mafioso, Vace and Ambassador - for the blokes. Whether you need a business, dress or formal suit, drop in and check out the range. Not every suit is perfect for the individual, so It Fits can split suits to make sure you have just
the right combination of jacket and pants and your personalized suit is the perfect fit. Nicola is excited to currently be in talks with a local Darwin designer to stock their clothing and encourages any other local fashionistas to get in touch. It Fits is keen to stock locally designed and Darwin made quality clothing pieces to support local talent and offer a customized option for NT locals. So next time you’re in Cavenagh Street, drop in and say hi to Nicola and know that if you’re a woman with curves or a man of substance, It Fits will have something great in store that not only fits – but will make you feel like a million bucks as well.

C O N F ESSIONS O F A W EDDI NG PL ANNER
As far as female expectations go, having the perfect wedding day is up there with borrowing your sister’s tops and owning some sort of frizz control. Personally, I just hope he turns up, but for most blushing brides it’s imperative their special day goes off without a hitch, placing extraordinary pressure on one person in particular…the wedding planner
When it comes to couples planning their day to say, ‘I do,’ these extraordinary people aim to answer every request with ‘I can,’….an understandable response when you’ve got crazy eyed women, clad in white, unblinkingly asking you to carry them. Yes, that’s right! According to an article in Huffington Post, brides are not above asking their wedding planners to carry them (well they would be above their wedding planners if such a request is met I suppose.) This is so dresses don’t touch the ground and get dirty before the big ‘reveal’ down the aisle. Admittedly, it’s a US trend and I can’t see it taking flight in regional Qld. Can you imagine? Wedding Planner, Denise: How are you feeling Tanya? Tanya: Pretty good thanks Denise, I was just wondering if you could carry me across the footy field to St Stephen’s before the big reveal. Wedding Planner, Denise: How are you feeling Tanya?
Another battle scar story from the wedding planner brigade, concerns brides requesting they don’t see anything ‘ugly’ all day. I know, the temptation would be to brandish a photo of you pashing their groom, and asking, ‘is this what you mean?’ but then you’d be out of a job and sniffing around the reception in case there’s an extra meal from the alternate drop, and we all know there never is. But doing away with the ugly from the bride’s sight is very subjective don’t you think? What I might deem beautiful (a chicken kiev for example), might be horrendous to her. It could get very tricky. In my research, the one outlandish request of brides that I do particularly love is the ‘stand in’ request. As it suggests, this involves the bride asking the wedding planner to ‘stand in’ for a critical no show, ie the celebrant, the groom, the flower girl, the gushing mother of the bride, I’m sure the list goes
on. Of course ‘stand in’ in my books, includes speaking roles. So, there you’d be, as the groom saying ‘no, I don’t’, when asked by you, the celebrant, if you take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife. Obviously, you’d have to be on your toes and there’d need to be tears as we cut to you, the now blubbering mother of the bride, wondering how the day all went so horribly wrong! So, with the nightmare ‘carry me’ bridezillas, it’s not all roses for wedding planners, but in the illustrious company of Santa Clause, Oprah, and the manufacturers of Mint Slices, they are making dreams come true, and, after all my research do I think they deserve a round of applause? I do. Anna Daniels is the Regional and Rural Reporter for The Project, Network Ten, and has recently relocated to Cairns. Follow Anna on twitter @annadtweets

Cabinet
CLEANOUT Now that the wet season has finally arrived why not spend a rainy day clearing out the bathroom cabinet – out with the old and in with the new for the dry season ahead.
All beauty products have expiry dates, although it’s more important to throw out some products than others.
• Mascara
Mascaras should be discarded a maximum of 6 months after opening. They are particularly notorious for harbouring bacteria and the last thing you want is irritated red eyes. Mascaras also dry out easily which can cause the mascara to flake off.
• Pencils
Eye and lip pencils last between 3-5 years depending on the quality. You’ll know it’s time to throw them out once they become drier and more difficult to apply – you don’t want to be dragging the delicate skin around the eyes or lips as that will only exacerbate wrinkles. If you sharpen your pencils before each use it will not only help preserve them but also keep them clean and reduce bacteria.
• Foundation
Most foundations have a life span of 2 years but you should throw them out if you notice liquid foundations separating.
• Lipstick / Lip Gloss
You should get up to 3 years mileage from lip glosses and lipsticks. If you’re prone to cold sores make sure you apply lip products with a brush that you can wash after each application to reduce spreading germs.
• SPF Products
Skincare and cosmetics that contain sunscreen should have an expiry date listed. A sunscreen that’s past its expiry date offers no protection so make sure you replace these often.
• Anti-aging or Acne Products
Due to the ingredients these products only last anywhere from 3 months to 1 year. Products with anti-oxidants can oxidise easily so if you notice a change in colour then it’s time to discard it.
• Perfume
Perfumes last around 2 years. Make sure you store them in a dark, cool place so they don’t deteriorate as fast.

DE-CLUTTER
your mind By Anuja Daniel
De-cluttering our mind involves recognition that our internal clutter and chaos often includes worries, buried emotions, rigid rules for living, repetitive narratives, probable traumas and wounds layered in so many levels of consciousness.
Low-fat, Fat-free, Diet, Light, and Lite
WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? Internal experiences like thoughts, beliefs, rules, worries, repetitive narratives etc tend to drift into your mind uninvited and you may think you cannot control their entry. However, research and people’s lived experience has established that these internal experiences can be controlled - for instance, we can place thoughts consciously in or out of our mind; and decide how much space and attention you give a thought in your mind. Positive internal experiences energise you and make you feel happy and calm; while negative internal experiences drain your energy and make you feel stressed and upset. Eliminating the unhelpful clutterfactors involves decision making. A decision has to be made about what aspects of your internal experiences you wish to attend to and nurture. Typically, we nurture that which we choose to attend to; and what we nurture governs our life-experiences. The first step is identifying and listing out what is most important for you to focus on right now. Once the essentials are identified, a few simple actions may assist with the process of de-cluttering aka eliminating the un-necessaries: -Identify unhelpful patterns of thinking and responding – any internal experience that keeps you stuck; and contexts wherein your respond in
unhealthy ways. It helps to write these down -With each identified unhelpful pattern, ask yourself: Need: Is it essential or necessary to keep this thought/feeling/response style/ repetitive story..? How did your mind get cluttered with this in the first place? Function: What purpose does retaining it serve? In the short and long term, is it helpful or unhelpful? What are the benefits and what are the costs of retaining this pattern? Future visualising: Ideally, how would I like to be in this situation? Which area/s can I move forward with? How might my moving forward look? When could I begin – in what order? How will I approach it? Action: Identify what the desired outcome in each context is. Reflect on what could be done differently to get the desired outcome. Then begin to action the smallest and most easily managed act that would have the most benefit. Single-task: Try to focus on clearing one clutter factor at a time. In general, multi-tasking fills your mind with a lot of activity without meaningful satisfaction, happiness or productivity. Prevention: Begin to notice how much you can handle in a day; what your limits are; and what factors cause the mind to feel cluttered.

Huiru Teoh, Nutrition NT
With tight competition within the food industry, companies are using smart advertising (or rather fancy advertising) and gimmicks to lure the attention of shoppers who are hungry for a fresh taste and quite often, a healthier option. It is undeniable that people are becoming more health conscious and products labelled fat free or light are popular. Although nutrition claims make it easier for consumers to identify what may be a healthier product, they often mislead consumers into thinking the products are healthier than they really are. Before we can appropriately decide if a food product is a healthier option based on its claims, we first need to understand what they actually mean. No Added Sugar/No Added Salt: the product does not have sugar added, however it may contain naturally occurring sugar, such as fruit sugar (fructose) and milk sugar (lactose). Similarly, No Added Salt product may not have salt added; however it may still contain naturally occurring sodium from its ingredients. Fat free: the product has less than 0.15g of fat per 100g. However, a product claiming to be 95% fat-free is still 5% fat. Reduced fat: the product contains 25% less fat than the original product, but is not necessarily low in fat. It can still have a high fat content! Low fat: contains less than 3g of fat per 100g. Light or Lite: check what the product is ‘light’ in, as it does not always refer to the fat content! For example, you will never find oil that has a lower fat content - a light oil is usually one that has a lighter colour or flavour. ‘Light’ may also refer to the taste and texture. Diet: the product may be low in energy and may be sweetened with artificial sweetener. Cholesterol free: a popular claim on plant food products, such as plantbased oils, spreads and nuts. However, cholesterol is only found in animal foods. Cholesterol free does not mean the product is low in fat. Do not be tricked into thinking that a cholesterol free margarine is superior to its counterparts. A common symbol that most of us would have seen is the Heart Foundation Tick. To get a tick approval, a product has to meet certain nutritional criteria, such as that for saturated fat, trans fat and salt. Whilst products containing the tick are usually a good choice, they may not always be the best one. It is better to read the labels and compare products yourself.
Introducing... Tattfree vs Laser
What is the process?
> L aser only addresses a small amount of pigment colours.
> T he tattooed areas are lightly abraded with a special handpiece similar to the one used in your original tattoo session.
Before
> T he process is virtually painless and if you have a low pain tolerance a topical anaesthetic can be applied to minimise discomfort.
Immediately after 1st treatment
> T attfree tattoo removal avoids these potential risks and addresses all pigment colours, generally in fewer treatments and at a substantially lower cost.
How does it work? > W e use the exclusive Tattfree tattoo removal system. > T his process will take a series of treatments depending on the size of the tattoo. > F or the average size tattoo you will need approximately 4 treatments. > T he treatments are designed to remove the pigmented areas of your tattoo.
> T reatment times are approximately 30 minutes, during which small circles are created over the surface of your tattoo.
one week after 1st treatment
> W e leave small spaces in between the circles which will be treated in subsequent sessions. The spacing strategy helps with the healing process and minimises the chances of scarring.
one week after 2nd treatment
> T ime between sessions is usually eight to ten weeks.
> T attfree uses a proprietary fluid to bring the tattoo pigment to the surface in the form of a scab. > O nce the scab falls off there is no more pigment and the underlying skin is clear.

ALL ABOUT:
MICRODERMABRASION What is microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment used to remove the outermost layer of the skin. It has been proven to help with a wide variety of skin problems, including acne scars, hyperpigmentation, sun damage and melasma. More recently it has also been used as an anti-ageing treatment to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
So exactly how does microdermabrasion work? Essentially microdermabrasion is a non-invasive deep exfoliation technique. The most common treatment usually involves tiny aluminum oxide crystals, which are blasted across the skin and then sucked up through a vacuum, removing dead skin cells along the way. The depth of exfoliation will be determined by the settings on the machine and the crystal flow, all of which is controlled by your therapist.
How many treatments are required? The number of treatments required will vary according to the individual and their skin problems. Issues such as hyperpigmentation and acne scarring may require several treatments closer together, while others may only need a couple treatments spread over a few weeks. You would need to have a consultation with your therapist in order to determine the appropriate number of treatments for your skin.
Is it painful? The procedure itself can be mildly uncomfortable in some areas, particularly around the nose and mouth; however it should never be painful. Your therapist should make sure not to exceed your pain threshold and to stay within a bearable setting that you are comfortable with.
How much does it cost? The price of microdermabrasion will vary however the price usually starts around $90 and can be up to $150 per treatment.
Why get it done? Microdermabrasion is a fast, effective non-invasive procedure and practically anyone can benefit from the treatment. While it aids in repair and healing of tissue, it also stimulates collagen production and allows for deeper penetration of vitamins and other beneficial agents in your products.

SO WHAT IS A
STRETCH MARK and how can you best treat them???
Stretch marks or striae as they are called in dermatology, are a form of scarring in the skin. They are caused by tearing of the dermis, which over time may diminish, but will not disappear completely. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or rapid weight changes. Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy, bodybuilding, hormone replacement therapy, etc. They first appear as reddish or purple lines, but tend to gradually fade to a lighter range. The affected areas appear empty and are soft to the touch. Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the resilient middle layer that helps the skin retain its shape. No stretch marks will form as long as there is support within the dermis. Stretching plays more of

a role in where the marks occur and in what direction they run. Stretching alone is not the cause. Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, but are most likely to appear in places where larger amounts of fat are stored. Most common places are the abdomen (especially near the navel), breasts, upper arms, underarms, back, thighs (both inner and outer), hips, and buttocks. The glucocorticoid hormones responsible for the development of stretch marks affect the dermis by preventing the fibroblasts from forming collagen and elastin fibers, necessary to keep rapidly growing skin taut. This creates a lack of supportive material, as the skin is stretched and leads to dermal and epidermal tearing. Skin subjected to more stretching force than it can handle will tear. Hormonal changes and genetics influence the skin's capacity to withstand stretching forces, as do diet and (possibly) exercise. Various treatments are available for the purpose of improving the appearance of existing stretch marks, including laser treatments, dermabrasion, and prescription retinoids. Some cream manufacturers claim the best results are achieved on recent stretch marks; however, few studies exist to support these claims. Fractional laser resurfacing uses scattered pulses of light only treating a fraction of the scar with each treatment, fractional laser creates microscopic wounds in the dermis that the body responds to by producing new collagen, 5-6 fractional laser treatments often results in striae improving by as much as 75 percent.

CHIROPRACTIC
care during pregnancy This month I’d like to focus on a recent article I found, which discussed the benefits of Chiropractic care during pregnancy*.
During pregnancy a woman’s body undergoes a variety of changes as the baby inside her womb starts to develop. It is common for mothers to experience discomfort due to these changes taking place in her body. These changes can cause sprains and strains on the ligaments, muscles and joints in the spine. The article in question was published in the the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and compared the response of 169 pregnant women complaining of low back and pelvic pain. The study assessed pain and physical function at 24-28 weeks of gestation and compared them again at the 33 week stage. During this time the ladies were split into 2 groups. Both groups received their normal routine Obstetric care and one group received Chiropractic care. In this instance the care given by the Chiropractor was spinal and pelvic manipulation, stabilisation exercises and patient education. By the 33 week stage the researchers found that the group who received both routine Obstetric care and Chiropractic care demonstrated significant reductions in their pain level and improved function. This is quite an exciting statistic as it demonstrates that a cooperative approach to low back and pelvic pain in mid pregnancy benefits patients more than routine Obstetric care alone. Chiropractic care is very safe throughout pregnancy, all our CAA member chiropractors are trained to care for pregnant women at all stages of their pregnancy. The techniques used are gentle, safe and non-invasive and exercises and stretches are commonly given as needed to compliment the chiropractic care given to your spine. For more information about Chiropractic care and pregnancy contact a CAA NT Chiropractor today. *A randomized controlled trial comparing a multimodal intervention and standard obstetrics care for low back and pelvic pain in pregnancy. Australians are spoilt for choice. More than 50 new car brands compete for consumer dollars, offering dozens of new models to suit needs that are real or imagined.
Even if you narrow it down to a specific model, there's a range of bodystyles and different engines to choose from. And we haven't got to the colour palette yet. Then, of course, there's the used-car market. Two in every three cars bought and sold are used cars. By 2005 standards that means Australians bought and sold more than two million used cars – one for every 10 people. But don't go into mental meltdown just yet. There are a few easy steps that can help you navigate the automotive forest to find the car that suits your needs perfectly. Join us online at www.mix1049.com.au and through our new (DAB+) Digital Radio
Advertisement First up, think carefully about what you will use the car for: commuting, family moving, personal chores, holidays, sports and recreation, business, etc. Chances are, some or all of the above, right? But some categories will take precedence over others. How many people do you need to carry? Is a big boot important for the golf clubs, musical instruments, dogs, shopping, etc? Will you venture beyond the bitumen? Do you need power, or is fuel economy more important? Is safety a

priority over size? Do you need to tow? It's all worth considering before you buy, because the more requirements you list, the easier it becomes to choose the right car. Last, but not least, don't forget to let your emotions have a say. A car is the second most expensive purchase most of us will ever make, and to spend that much money on something we don't like is just silly. Emotions are important; you should, after all, enjoy your car. Emotions, however, should not override practicalities — otherwise your car will end up complicating your life when it should be improving it. HAPPY HUNTING.

CAR OF THE MONTH
YOUR NAME: Rod Coverdale VEHICLE COLOUR BRAND MODEL AND YEAR? Black on Black 1976 XBGT Ford Falcon Hardtop Mad Max Replica WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE PURCHASE? Growing up I always liked the look of the 2 door falcon coupes and after seeing the Mad Max movies, I hoped that one day I would have one of my own. I purchased the car back in 1990. And basically for the next 15 or so years it was our daily family car. WHAT CONDITION WAS THE CAR IN WHEN YOU GOT IT? It was yellow and had a vinyl roof and was pretty beat up. Mechanically it was A1 with that big 351 engine growling a familiar tune. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO IMPROVE IT? Pretty much straight up after buying it I had all the dents and rust removed and gave it a nice coat of Black paint. Then a few years later gave the interior a complete retrim and added some
Saas seats and a nice sound system. It wasnt until around 2005 that I decided to turn it into a Mad Max replica. No longer our main car I stripped it down to its bare shell and started the long and arduous task of a complete ground up rebuild. I did what I could to the car and then shipped everything to a professional car restorer, Hills and Co in Taree NSW. Justin and his team painted the car and put it all back together for me. They did a fantastic job and I’ve been told it is the most movie correct car ever built. Other replicas have their owners personal touches or are missing items or they have had to change them for registration or whatever. I however wanted it to be exact. HAS IT WON ANY AWARDS? Back in 1995 it won best interior at the Mareeba Car Show in QLD. Since the Mad Max metamorphis it has one Best Muscle Car at the 2010 Shannons Extravaganza and Best in Show at the inaugural All Ford Day. HAVE YOU SEEN ANOTHER LIKE IT ON DARWIN ROADS? A few years ago while I was having mine restored an Army guy had a Mad Max 2 replica with the big fuel tanks in the boot, but he has since moved to Melbourne.

After our time volunteering at the Millenium Elephant Orphanage, we headed to the bustling seaside city of Galle and stayed with a local family on the very road which, 8 years earlier, was so flooded by the tsunami that bodies and buses floated right past the house. We were in Galle to volunteer at a Buddhist monastery teaching English to a group of young monks, aged between 6 and 18 years old. On our first day we were shown to an open area of the monastery where 15 sets of eyes were firmly locked on us, and before we knew it we were left alone with the students without any instructions as to what to do, or how to teach them. My partner Brett & I exchanged nervous glances, wrote our names on the board and fumbled through our first class - hardly the awardwinning teachers we thought we'd be, but the kids eagerly hung on our every word. That night we spent
hours researching and planning our lessons: we were determined to give something back to the youth of this beautiful country. The next 2 weeks flew by. My heart soared every time they smiled their huge excited smiles when we walked into class, and I loved the feeling I had when I watched their expressions change as they understood something I was teaching them... Never in my life had I ever thought of being a teacher, but I got such a rush from spending time with these amazing kids. They taught us all about Buddhism and their culture, and loved hearing all about life in Australia. When it was finally time for us to say goodbye, they gave us gifts and hand-written letters, and begged us not to forget them. I couldn't articulate what I was feeling, but I hope they know that my time with those kids changed my life forever.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country. The local food is unique and spicy, the weather is warm and sunny, and the landscapes lush and green. The local people are always friendly, yet there is a sadness behind their smiles. Many people don't realize that this beautiful country is still struggling to find it's feet after being ravaged by the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004. Over 35,000 people were killed and 1.5 million people were displaced from their homes in Sri Lanka, and the effects are still felt today. Locals do whatever it takes to make enough money to support their families & rebuild their homes, constantly living with the fear that at any moment, another wave might wash away everything they have.
Buildings detroyed by the 2004 tsunami are still scattered throughout Galle, as people have not yet been able to afford to rebuild

Adventure, Culture, Outback A trip to Katherine and its’ surrounding regions is a rich and rewarding experience – one you soon won’t forget. Not only is it home to the natural wonder that is Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, but there are also many hidden gems off the beaten track and characters that will make a place in your heart and be the focal point of stories you will tell for years to come. Here, we will let you in on a few very special places you really need to discover for yourself. In the township of Katherine itself, referred to as the ‘Crossroads of the North’, immerse yourself in cultural experiences at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre, Mimi Aboriginal Art and Craft where you are likely to meet the artists in residence, and Top Didj Art Gallery and Cultural Experience where you can test your own hand at traditional dot and cross-hatch painting or lighting a fire with fire sticks. On the outskirts of town, Springvale Homestead, set under the lush canopy of four South American Raintrees, is the oldest original homestead in the Top End, established in 1879 and well worth the visit. North of Katherine, and just 6km south from the old mining town of Pine Creek, Lake Copperfield is a cool, deep lake ideal for swimming in the warm Top End heat. Lake Copperfield acts as a water reservoir for the local community and therefore, to protect the water quality, camping, washing and motor boating activities are not permitted, but the area nestled in amongst the hills is the perfect spot for a lazy day picnicking and relaxing or taking to the water in a kayak. Travelling south of Katherine to the area known as the ‘Capital of the Never Never’, Mataranka and Roper Bar, further east, is steeped in fascinating history. Elsey Cemetery marks the resting place of many of the characters written about in Jeannie Gunn’s book ‘We of the Never Never’ and at Mataranka Homestead you can explore an authentic copy of the original hand hewn cypress pine homestead that was constructed for the film adaptation 82

of Gunn’s book. The Roper Bar is a well known place to catch Barramundi, but it is also where Leichhardt’s expedition of 1845 crossed the Roper River. The bar was built in the early 1900s as part of the supply route for the Overland Telegraph Line. These days you will find all you need there in the form of accommodation, fuel and a general store. Continue east and you will find yourself in Gulf country where you will pass through Cape Crawford, home to the famous Heartbreak Hotel and Caranbirini Conservation Reserve where 25m high sandstone spires, known as The Lost City, surround a semi permanent waterhole. Don’t miss a visit to Borroloola Township which was once a lawless outpost in the 1800s where illegal activities such as smuggling and illicit grog running proliferated. West of Katherine lies the Victoria River, diverse and awe-inspiring in land forms, history and abundant wildlife. Just west of the Victoria River Crossing, the Escarpment Lookout Walk will take your breath away. Although a short walk, it is steep in some sections, but the panoramic views of the soaring red rocky escarpments of the Valley will be worth every step taken. Don’t be surprised if this only whets your appetite for the Katherine Region! There are so many wonderful places to explore and people to meet. So book your Katherine trip at www.tourismtopend. com.au or call us today on 1300 138 886. The Visitor Information Centre is located at 6 Bennett St, Darwin City.

That moment is almost here, when you realise the dry season has begun. The louvres have been open for days, you’ve slept a few nights in a row without the air conditioner on, and you think you can smell dust. Yes it’s that time of year again. That shady overcast sky is replaced with saturated glorious sunsets and the city is abuzz with people out and about.
Now that things aren’t so wet anymore, its time to take stock and start tidying up around the house. The best part of the year is still ahead of you and with the cooler days you can finally clear the palm fronds, sweep the yard, and do all those little jobs around the house it was far too hot to do until now. The tropical lifestyle has so much going for it and outdoor living is one of our greatest assets. Now’s the time to freshen up that deck, get some new patio furniture or add a bit of new life to the garden. We have many balmy nights ahead of us and whether you’re entertaining friends at home or just spending time with the family, your home is your haven and deserves a little attention at this time of year. Why not bring the outside in with stunning landscape photographic prints of Darwin’s favourite locations? Or add some greenery with a selection of indoor plants? Nothing says tropical north like the romance of teak and cane, and Darwin businesses have a vast selection of beautiful imported furniture products to transform a room, or maybe even your whole house.

Small touches can make a difference for those on a budget. A new candle, a lush tropical flowering plant, new bath towels, or even some bright and cheerful cushions to freshen up the sofa. Just one addition can inspire you to bigger and better things. Often we put things off because the whole project seems too big, or we think can’t afford it, or it’s too much work. Just remember you don’t have to do everything at once. It’s the first step that is the hardest. On a grander scale, the dry season is a great time for renovating so have a look around your home and decide at last to make the changes you’ve been talking about for so long. Putting in a water feature? Or a new kitchen perhaps? With the abundance of home renovation shows on TV, why not start to jot down some ideas and then look around in Darwin for trusted professionals that can help you breath new life into your home. For some great ideas and helpful hints, check out this month’s decorating feature. We’ve selected some specialist Darwin businesses that can help turn your inspired thoughts into action, giving you expert guidance and support along the way. Bring on the dry season!

A NEW LEAF
of Life
With the onset of the Dry season, many people’s thoughts turn to gardening. The weather conditions are tending towards more comfortable temperatures, less humidity and rainfall and gentler breezes. Venturing into the depths of your garden after a couple of months of avoiding its steamy overgrown spaces may be daunting, but it’s a great time to reassess how you use your garden and implement a revamp of your outdoor spaces.
92
April 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine
Of particular importance to Top Enders with the increases in utilities costs is the issue of saving on water and energy consumption. While updating and renovating a garden it is well worth careful consideration of how you can use your garden to save on energy costs and how you can reduce your water requirements through clever planning and maintenance. Creating water zones in your garden and grouping plants with similar water needs together will enable you to water your garden much more efficiently without having to deny yourself the lush tropical water hungry species. Just put them all in one high water zone. Look for some fantastic new water efficient plants. There are hundreds available, grown and supplied locally, in our climate for our climate. Check out your local garden centres who will also be able to offer advice for individual situations. This year’s Tropical Garden Spectacular will feature a dedicated water zone aimed at promoting and explaining efficient water use in gardens A typical established garden in Darwin is tropical in style with palms, lots of lawn and other lush, water hungry plants. Many home owners have already made major changes by removing hundreds of palms, reducing their lawn areas and planting a wide variety of beautiful plants that require much less water. Many of our older established gardens now have a heavily shaded understory which provides wonderful energy saving shade to homes, and a cool outdoor space. Established
gardens also require less water during the dry season, they tend to lose less water through evaporation, and have soils that hold water well after years of leaf litter and other organic matter have contributed to the soil structure. However the proliferation of palms in these older gardens creates a lot of tedious palm frond removal when you might rather be harvesting vegetables or flowers or wallowing in your pool. It is ideal to allow passageways for breezes to enter and pass through your garden, air flow is a great contributor to comfort and health of not only the garden but ourselves as well. Breezes will follow the paths you provide, but also need a way out. Air will not flow into a dead end. The hardest part of redesigning a garden is deciding what should stay and what must go. Every established garden will have some key plants that provide value to the garden through beauty, shade, screening, productive potential, rarity, sentimentality, history, recreational value, many other attributes. And then there are others that never seem to grow and are always attracting diseases and pests. It’s time to be ruthless! To refresh your garden and give it a new lease of life, see your local nursery, garden centre or garden professional for the right advice.

5 EASY Summer Decor Ideas for Your Home Source: www.freshhome.com
All aspects of painting and decorating Summer is about relaxing and enjoying the season. From cooling interior color palettes to opting for casual interiors over the stuffy formal ones, summer decor ideas are easy. Do you have a summer beach house, or would you like your apartment to FEEL like a summer beach house? Either way, the warm outdoors and cool evening breezes make your home the optimal place to entertain and relax. Try these easy summer decor ideas to take advantage of all that the season has to offer.
FURNITURE: Dark and muted tones are perfect for fall and winter, but spring and summer scream for light and airy colors. Use removable slipcovers, or decorative throws to bring bursts of color and brightness. Prefer whites and neutrals? White and khaki slipcovers are casual but can be dressed up with formal throw pillows in an instant. DRAPERY: When you want to bring in the cool night air, and keep out the hot summer sun use curtains instead of drapery. Drapery material is heavy and dark, while curtains paired with sheers can give you versatile flexibility in the summer months. TO YOUR GARDEN
Butterflies have been called ‘flowers with wings’, and their appearance in gardens gives pleasure to all. There are about 380 butterfly species in Australia,. Butterflies not only are beautiful but, like bees, play an important part in our environment by helping to cross-pollinate flowers and allow them to produce fertile seed to create new plants. Butterfly Facts; Butterflies are attracted to gardens for two reasons; the first is when adults of both sexes are seeking nectar from flowers(nectar is a sweet sugary food produced by most flowers),and the second is when the females are ready to lay their eggs on the right food plants. Usually these are quite specific Australian or introduced species of trees, shrubs or grasses. This is because most plants have chemical defences, and different caterpillars have only found ways to overcome one or two types of these defences. A good example of this is the caterpillar of the Monarch butterfly, that feeds on poisonous milkweed. The Monarch in turn stores the poison and becomes poisonous itself. Many flowers which attract butterflies to their nectar are open in design, such as daises and impatiens while others are in heads or clusters e.g. buddleias. The larger, generally more exotic, butterflies can feed on flowers where the nectar is deeper in the flower like hibiscus, pentas and citrus. How to make a butterfly garden; The aim is to encourage butterflies to live and breed in your garden. This is very easy, all you have to do is grow plants with flowers that attract butterflies to their nectar or food plants for caterpillars. Avoid the temptation to squash caterpillars when you see them
and avoid using poisonous sprays and insecticides. Its best to feed plants with organic fertilisers; this will assist in keeping a natural balance in your garden. Every butterfly results from a caterpillar, and you must be prepared to accept some chewed leaves. Birds and predatory insects keep their numbers in check, as a rule. The introduced Cabbage White Butterfly seems to be the only butterfly that occurs in large enough numbers to be considered a garden pest. The Cabbage White is an easy butterfly for children to grow, and provides a simple introduction to the life cycle of a butterfly. Not all caterpillars turn into butterflies. Some in your garden will grow into moths. One beautiful example is the emperor gun caterpillar that lives on Gum trees. Butterflies prefer warm sunny spots, sheltered from the wind. The warmer and more sheltered your butterfly garden, the longer the butterflies will breed and linger for you to enjoy. Put plants in groups, and preferably one colour rather than mixed colours. Butterflies, like humans, can see colours and are attracted to brightly coloured flowers. Put not only bushes and seedlings in your garden, but indigenous grasses and some selected weeds. With a butterfly garden spend your time planting things in and not pulling things out….

What is mould? Mould is a fungus that eats and grows in damp or moist areas. It can digest what it grows on and can do some serious damage to our buildings. It can eat into paper, cloth, carpet, rugs, and even our walls and ceilings. Mould outside in nature can in fact be very beneficial. Indoors, mould can make life very dangerous. What are some symptoms of mould exposure? The health impact will affect people differently as everyone has different constitutions and health vulnerabilities. People with asthma and lung problems can be particularly affected, along with young children. An initial symptom of mould exposure The rains these days is fatigue which is not alleviated by rest. growth is small enough that you can take care of it yourself or if you should hire a professional in mould remediation. If the area of mould growth is more than 1 meter squared on porous materials such as fabrics, insulation, plaster, wallpaper, and chipboard then it should be removed and discarded carefully. When cleaning carpet with a machine that uses water always be sure that the area is thoroughly dried or this can cause mould growth. Kill Mould in 2 Simple Ways: Note: Always wear protective gear when dealing with mould. Wear: Disposable gloves-resist touching mould with bare hands; Goggles, without ventilation holes, will keep mould and mould spores from getting into your eyes; 3-Ply disposable face mask to avoid inhaling mould spores. You’ll look like a surgeon and it will safely get the job done! 1) Non-Porous Surfaces (plastic, metal, concrete, hard timbers): With a micro-fibre cloth wipe with a solution of 80% white naturally fermented vinegar & 20% water. Do not use cheap imitation vinegar made from acetic acid as not as effective. Dispose of cloth when finished. 2) Porous Surfaces (plaster, insulation, particleboard, soft timbers): Wipe with a solution of 70% alcohol & 30% water. Note that bleach is an ineffective mould killer as it is highly alkaline and can provide a food source for further mould growth. It only ‘bleaches’ and partially removes yet within a few weeks mould will become evident again. To help inhibit mould growth, wipe clean surfaces (mould-free & dust-free) before the onset of the wet season and throughout with clove essential oil. This can be purchased at health food shops & chemists. Put a number of drops onto a small rag and wipe (particularly underneath & inside wooden tables and leather furniture). Keep rag and clove oil bottle together in ziplock bag.

POND APPLE Howard Springs Infestation
A Howard Springs resident was recently surprised to find she had the declared weed, pond apple (Annona glabra), growing on her property.
