Marine Safety • Plan your route before you get on the water and check Notices to Mariners on the Darwin Port Corporation website • Stay at least 250 metres clear of all dredging vessels and diving equipment • Look out for the half-submerged pipeline and anchoring equipment • Be extra careful at night, know the night lighting for channel markers, vessels and obstructions • Watch out for the orange flashing lights fitted to the pipeline and don’t try to sail between them • Always go around the dredging configuration or you risk serious harm to people and equipment • Be alert and stay safe on the harbour

If you are not sure, hold out your hand and turn it to the side. If you can cover the dredging equipment with your hand, you are at about a safe distance. INPEX continues to show its commitment to maximising safety and minimising public inconvenience. Keep informed of all Ichthys Project dredging activities and safety information through the regular marine safety bulletins in the newspaper and on the www.ichthysproject.com website.

Make it your

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

to make a real difference

Volunteering SA&NT is hoping that more people will make a New Year’s resolution to share their time and skills by volunteering in 2013. Although many Australians volunteer in some way; often during holiday periods, many of these volunteers have to take on other commitments such as baby sitting for the family. This leaves many vacancies in organisations that rely on volunteers for vital support and at times the situation in these organisations can become critical. So, anyone looking for something to do over the holiday period should consider volunteering in their community. To give of yourself, your time and your talents to other members of your community or your environment, builds not only benefits for them, but for you as an individual. Evidence has shown that volunteers are less likely to be effected by major health issues such as depression, strokes and heart disease as they can build interests outside of themselves while connecting with others and their communities. There are thousands of diverse jobs listed at www.volunteeringsa-nt.org.au - from home tutoring; environmental projects; the arts and culture; helping out in the hospitals; libraries; the media and community radio; archives; tourism; emergency services, health services, migrant support, sport and recreation, tourism; women’s services and the ethnic sector; and there is still a need for a greater inclusion of disability, youth and indigenous sectors. In most cases, these positions will take as little as a few hours of volunteered time a week. In 2013, let’s see more people stepping up to make a huge difference to the needy organisations in our community.

MANOLI Karpasitis One Real Estate

Manoli Karpasitis is the definitive contemporary inner city local. Darwin born and bred, he has developed a strong connection to his community and has proudly watched Darwin develop and grow into the vibrant city it is today. When he first started out in real estate, Manoli often felt clients were reluctant to put their faith in him to sell their home, because he looked young and new to the business. When going to meeting prospective vendors at appraisals he had to work a lot harder to earn their trust, as there were already a lot of well known and more experienced agents around Darwin. “By always getting that feedback I learnt after the first year that to be up there with the best, I had to know my product, know the market and know what vendors wanted. I connected with sellers and developers and that learning process made me a stronger and better agent. I’ve learnt to be more resourceful, and to think outside the square.” Over the years these experiences have informed Manoli’s practice and he now is proud to manage a loyal client

base that have total confidence in his capacity to not just fulfill their needs, but exceed their expectations. Since joining One Real Estate Manoli has also learnt the value of a close knit team. By getting to know each other’s styles, they combine their skills and expertise. Manoli is particularly grateful to work alongside Karl Secondis and sees him as a great mentor, having been around for so long as a fixture in the Top End property scene. One Real Estate is a boutique real estate brand providing an outstanding customer service experience to both its clients and customers and specialising in the sale and management of residential real estate. They cater to those searching in the mid to upper end of Darwin’s property market, with a focus on inner suburban properties. Manoli’s current focus is of course the spectacular townhouses featured in our cover story this month at Bayview, but he is also excited about a new development at 77 Sabine Road. With10 units in the complex, these offer an affordable entry point for First Home Buyers that is close to the CBD and Nightcliff foreshore. These 2 bedroom 2 bathroom architecturally designed apartments will commence construction next year, giving First Home Buyers some time to get a deposit down and save some money for themselves. At the other end of the market of course are the

fantastic properties at O’Ferrall’s Road in Bayview. Right on the waterfront, these townhouses are an agent’s dream – but why list with two agents? Manoli is clear in answering this. “We want to get a picture out there to the marketplace, to buyers and sellers that when it comes to selling a property, we do our best to find a variety of buyers. If this means two agents need to work together to attract diversity of buyer then this is a constructive way of doing this. With a smaller boutique agency like One Real Estate, we are much better placed to attract greater numbers and quality of potential buyers”. Call Manoli today for your personalized experience.

It’s certainly the best year by an individual agent I’ve witnessed since I joined the industry. The exciting thing is I think he can take it to a whole other level in 2013. He is a smart young man who works incredibly hard and has great relationships with some of Darwin’s key builders & property owners.” In mid 2012 Daniel joined forces with senior director Braden to form ‘Ray White Central Developments’. Specialising in ‘off the plan sales’ and project marketing, their most exciting project of 2012 was Kube – an innovative project with a fabulous inner city location in Cavenagh Street. ROOST REALTY

Neil And Michelle pictured with Roost Realty team Sheridan and Adriana

This time last year, Neil and Michelle Henson were visiting Michelle’s property focused family on the Gold Coast. A chance conversation with brother David Anthony who develops properties under the Zest Homes banner, and who was selling apartments in the Zest Darwin building, saw the two decide to relocate to Darwin, to set up real estate company; Roost Realty.

This boutique agency only deals with new properties and Roost is the only agency in Darwin focusing on the National Rental Affordability Scheme. NRAS properties are owned by private investors, who receive an annual income-tax free Incentive for ten years, currently $9,981 per dwelling, and indexed each year. “Our NRAS properties are tenanted with great people, those who work in banks, the military, construction, healthcare, government and the private sector. Contrary to popular belief this is not social housing, and in Darwin’s expensive rent scenario this is a great deal for both investors and tenants.” They also offer corporate lettings and are always on the lookout for new and interesting projects. “It’s been an interesting journey. Starting a business from scratch, taking on 110 properties in the first week of business”. Husband and wife team Neil and Michelle Henson believe that with dedication and commitment, anything can be achieved. That bar in Bahrain where they first met seems a world away now after launching themselves onto the Darwin Realty scene in mid 2012. Michelle comes from a marketing and real estate background, and all of her work to date seems to

have been preparing her to come home to Roost, so to speak. After cutting her teeth on property sales in the Gold Coast in the 1990’s, she then headed to Dubai to polish her marketing skills with OQYANA, a 22-island development, boasting 1500 apartments, 200 villas and 5 hotels, on The World Islands in Dubai. Meanwhile after 14 years in the British Army, Neil moved into risk management and loss prevention for a number of years before setting up in real estate. “That conversation we had in January 2012 – really changed the course of where we were headed.” After recently winning the REINT Innovation award, Michelle and Neil are off to Parliament House in Canberra in March after being nominated by the Real Estate Institute of Australia for the national Innovation award. The team at Roost are also excited to be selling Darwins newest development – Zen Quarter - 188 units in the CBD, with water views across Frances Bay. The starting price of $357, 500 makes them undoubtedly Darwin’s most affordable apartments. They have only been on the market for a few weeks, and are selling fast, with construction expected to

finish in 2014. Neil and Michelle’s shared enthusiasm for their work is palpable. “Rental returns in Darwin are the highest of anywhere else in the country and continuing to increase. Where other markets are flat we’re seeing the Darwin market continue to rise. ” The best the rest of us can do is wait and see what these two will do next. www.zenquarter.com

O’Donoghue First National Real Estate O’Donoghue’s is approaching its 5th year of operations, and Managing Director Jeremy O’Donoghue says business has never been better.

With a staff of 25 now on board, and a positive and enthusiastic approach, Jeremy is feeling deservedly upbeat with the direction the agency is heading. “I’m really passionate about the team that works here now. We have some fantastic people with sensational attitudes who have been with us for a long time”. Selling everything from land subdivisions and apartment complexes off the plan, to residential properties across Darwin, the Northern suburbs and Palmerston, as well as marina berths and development sites, it takes a team effort to ensure the best results for their clients. “Our focus is always to achieve at or above our owner’s expectations, in the quickest possible time and in the most cost effective manner. We have reliable agents that tell it like it is, not necessarily only what people want to hear.” With everyone working together as a team they are able to expose their properties to all segments of the market from the commercial to the residential investor. First National has 6 highly experienced sales people, all specialized in selling residential property. “Our team are consistently in the top ten sales people within South Australia and the Northern Territory for First National” says Jeremy, who was honoured to be recognized as Number 2 First National Top Sales person in Australia. “A lot of our business comes from repeat clients and referrals. It’s important each and every client experiences honest, engaging communication from our agents, because word of mouth is our most powerful marketing tool.” The team received 3 major awards at the Real Estate Institute of the Northern Territory (REINT) awards last August, receiving REINT Auctioneer of the Year 2012, Large Agency of the Year Award and the Community Service Award. Featured Property: 45 Carnoustie Circuit, Marrara. This outstanding property offers the large family modern contemporary living in a premier golf course location. Just metres from the 17th green, and featuring all the

luxuries you’d expect, this 6 bedroom, 4 bathroom property offers spectacular living with a superior finish. You can enjoy the best of outdoor living in the large entertainment area, with a resort style salt water pool and outdoor shower, or enjoy a family night in on those steamy Darwin nights in the fully air-conditioned soundproof media room. Featuring not one but 2 designer kitchens, with top of the range appliances, walk in pantry, granite bench tops and even a coffee machine, no expense has been spared in this breathtaking property. With sweeping views from second floor balconies across the fairways, just try to resist the urge to jump in your own golf buggy for a round on a lazy Sunday morning. Not a detail has been missed with this magnificent property, including a triple garage, solar hot water, fully irrigated gardens, and intercoms on both levels. Entering the property market can be a daunting prospect. DRE A M Teams

Well the silly season is over, the holidays are behind us, and the new working year is here. This is a great time to bring your staff together and re-group as a team and focus on the new year ahead. A time to share ideas, build strong relationships, and recognize the worth of your staff as a team. This month DarwinLife features some of the local businesses who would like to acknowledge their “Dream Team and showcase the staff that help make their business strong.

DarwinLife | Dream Teams

Let us be part of your TEAM with the challenges in 2013 By Alexis Galloway

As major resource projects sweep into the Northern Territory next year, their lure of high salaries and career progression will present the opportunity for the local workforce to ‘job hop’, but where does this leave their current employers? All Aspects Recruitment General Manager Rob Knight, who’s team specialises in providing professional staff, says these changes in 2013 will result in interesting times ahead for businesses of all sizes. “From early January we may see the largest shift, in the labour market, the Northern Territory has ever seen, as people who are already employed choose to take on other challenging positions at companies with large-scale projects,” says Rob. “There are a variety of reasons some employees may job hop, this could be for higher paying salaries or just for a career stepping stone, but the bottom line is next year, thousands of staff will leave their current employers. “As a result, employers will find themselves facing the burden of losing staff without any sort of contingency plan in place, which could continue

24

right through to 2015. “This will be a challenge for employers, but it will also provide them with an opportunity to attain and retain quality employees with the assistance of a specialised human resource service.” As an Australian business with a local presence and a global reach, All Aspects Recruitment is solving such problems by becoming ‘part of their clients team’. “Our goal is to assist employers who have experienced this change, by finding specialised staff through our tailored, personalised and professional service, while becoming part of the employers team,” Rob says. “As well as finding professional staff, we also assist in helping existing and new businesses of all sizes, become an “employer of choice”. All Aspects Recruitment’s owners Janine

McDonald and Annette Law explain, after taking over the keys of an oil and gas human resources company in the United Kingdom in 2011, they now have a database of over 25000 candidates, who specialise in the oil and gas industry, ready for potential work in the Territory. “These candidates are located around-the-world, who have a specialised skill set and are looking for work relevant to major projects starting up locally,” says Janine. “Many companies are setting up in the Northern Territory, but finding suitable employees with the right skills, can be a serious challenge for these employers.” “This is where All Aspects Recruitment comes in and becomes part of the team to offer a boutique, client-focused service, finding permanent and temporary staff. “We also offer flexibility and contingency plans to support businesses while offering them professional advice.” For more information about All Aspects Recruitment, go to www.aarecruit.com.au, call (08) 8981 7431 or see the team at unit 1/48 Woods Street, Darwin.

Absolute Real Estate When Denise Meeking started her business, she had no idea she was actually increasing her family unit. But that’s how the women at Absolute Real Estate feel about each other, and Denise’s daughters Michelle, Maria and Jacqui say Absolute’s Dream Team is just that, because of their mother. With 5 members of the family on board - Denise, her husband Roy and daughters Michelle, Jacqui and Maria, it was inevitable the other women on the team would be embraced into the family fold. The Absolute club agree that this family business comes with more passion and a stronger drive for what you do. Loyalty is deep and felt throughout by the team. “We’re all family, and we’re all committed” says Michelle. “Our biggest assets appreciate the generosity, the great management support and the extensive knowledge and experience that is offered by Denise and the team.” Absolute Real Estate specialise in Property Management, with 7 Property Managers on board and of course Denise’s husband Roy - the only bloke in the office! He is Absolute’s leasing agent and provides the unique service of liaising one on one with prospective tenants. His sole job is to show properties, to help tenants find what they need and to ensure positive results for property owners. People aren’t delayed waiting for a viewing or open house, and they get a personalised service, plus Roy gets to know the tenants and can better match the right tenants to the right property. You know what they say about Property Management – you only hear from someone when there’s a problem. The pressure is high, and the demands are constant. This makes a good working environment a crucial foundation to success in real estate. At Absolute Real Estate, Denise says her primary focus is that people feel comfortable to be here, they are happy to be here and that their energy levels are high. She supports her staff with incentives, rewards

and ongoing training and many of the staff believe it’s important to connect with the people they work with and make friends. Staff are courteous and considerate of others, they see when someone needs help and do what they can to support each other. Team spirit is alive and well and the girls (and Roy) get together regularly for fun outside of work too. From tugs of war at the beach, to lawn bowls and bbq dinners, they even have social gatherings with their contractors to strengthen connections and show appreciation for their dedication and loyalty. This dream team knows how to work hard and play hard too! With that many women on board there’s bound to be champagne so luckily Roy is always on hand to play chauffeur when needed. Absolute Real Estate is a warm and welcoming environment and the passion felt by all of the staff for their work and their co workers is inspiring. This commitment to each other and shared desire to succeed is their motivating force and who benefits from this most of all? Their clients of course.

PEE WEE’S DREAM TEAM A great location and fabulous food are definitely factors in a restaurant’s success, but excellent staff are the most important ingredient of all. After 11 years at Pee Wee’s, Simon and Lily Matthews have seen their share of people come and go, but both believe their current team is the best yet. Lily didn’t hesitate when the opportunity arose to feature them in this month’s Dream Teams. “We take a Territory approach to our style of service by encouraging laid back and friendly service. We make sure staff are knowledgeable, with thorough product background, but approachable so our customers feel relaxed and welcome. All of our staff have regular food and wine training and tastings, and we see how they evolve in their roles because of this. Their ability to know what our customers want is why our loyal customers keep coming back from year to year,” says Lily. Pee Wee’s was awarded a Gold Plate Award this year for Best Stand Alone Restaurant and Lily credits the award

26

to her dream team. “Hospitality staff work long hours, and it’s not for everybody. The hours and the dedication they put into the restaurant is as if it’s their own business, which is a rare quality”. Mio Kovacevic knows the restaurant better than most. He started there at 15 years of age, polishing glasses one busy night and has gradually worked his way through the various roles. As well as being Lily’s younger brother, 7 years later, Mio is now Assistant Manager. Dhanushiya Ganesan’s path into hospitality began more than 15 years ago with a gruelling combination of full time work and study. After completing her degree she worked her way up the ranks at various establishments to management roles where she developed most of her skills that she

utilises today. She is now Restaurant Manager at Pee Wee’s. An amazing knowledge of wine has earned Senior Supervisor Rice Fan the additional title of ‘token sommelier’. Along with Event Manager Felicity Lolias who has over 17 years hospitality experience, this dynamic foursome are the backbone of the front of house team at Pee Wee’s. The highlight of Pee Wee’s annual calendar has been the Boxing Day Test on the lawns. Staff, family and friends turn up in singlets and thongs for a relaxed Christmas celebration. After 10 years of this Simon and Lily have decided the time has come to break traditions and this year the whole team will hit the town dressed as superheroes. Best of all - nobody has to clean up! From trainees to wait staff to supervisors and managers, the sense of community is strong and the lines between employee and family are happily blurred. “Our apprentices have evolved, and Simon is a great teacher in that respect. I like to nurture our staff too - like parents, we have to guide them back on track sometimes, but a lot of the time it flows really nicely. Because they’ve been with us for so long, they respond really well to us. We look after them, we’re honest with them and they respect us for it,” says Lily.

Hog’s Breath Café Hog’s Breath Café has been a staple on the Darwin dining scene for more than 20 years. With 70 staff across two restaurants in Darwin and Palmerston, co-owners Kristen and Cormac MacCarthy believe they have the ultimate Dream Team. Hogs Breath is open 364 days a year (closed Christmas day) from 11.30am till late, which means a dedicated and skilled workforce is crucial. With a management team of 20, Cormac believes it is the stability of the team that ensures things run smoothly from one steak to the next. Ashley, Clare and Ashish run the show at Palmerston along with the 6 other members of the management team. While in Darwin, the Mitchell street crew flourishes under the guidance of Athena, Matt and Mel, plus 5 other managers. So why are they such a dream team? “It’s their ability to develop and maintain a strong focus, and work well together as a team. It’s only when you are

all on the same page that you have any chance of executing service well,” said Cormac. “All of our staff work hard. It’s a demanding job, with unforgiving hours; always working weekends, and public holidays”. Hog’s Breath has a diverse menu with chicken, fish and lamb, lip smacking ribs and delicious salads. Hog’s Breath is a steakhouse at heart however and of course it’s the succulent prime rib steaks slow cooked for 18 hours we all know and love Hoggies for. Surprisingly there are also vegan and vegetarian options on the menu, and of course there’s dessert! Best of all, parents ordering lunch on the weekends can feed their kids for free between 11.30am and 4.00pm. Available for functions for up to 50 people, you can also check out the full menu online at www.hogsbreath.com.au.

Vanity Hair Chris Kanochkin has been at the helm of Vanity Hair in Parap Village for the past 11 years, though the shop has been a hair salon for 5 decades. With a loyal customer base of dedicated locals coming for the traditional style and set or the latest colouring techniques and hair extensions, Chris and the girls offer decades of combined experience to their clients in a friendly, and welcoming environment. “We are a family friendly salon with a broad base of clients from babies to 90 year olds. Some of our clients have been coming for more than 25 years, and most of our staff are Territory born and bred,” says owner Chris. The TIGI product range is exclusive to Darwin at Vanity Hair and they are one of 12 salons in Australia to offer the TIGI Hair Reborn treatment range. Chris is proud of her team, and says the way they work together to share knowledge is what makes them her Dream Team. “Varying degrees of experience mean everyone learns something from each other. Older staff

pick up the latest trade school techniques from the apprentices and younger staff tap into the experiences of those who’ve been in the business for much longer than them” says Chris. Vanity Hair also boasts the only person in the NT – Mel Passalick – to win a place in the TIGI Session Series styling team. With 20 finalists from across Australia, the team are obviously thrilled to see one of their own achieve such success. For Instagram users, Vanity Hair is currently running an exciting promotion for the month of January. Just book a colour package (colour, blow dry, Hair Reborn treatment) at Vanity Hair they will upload your before/after photos to Instagram (hairbyvanity). The photo with the most likes by Feb 1st gets their money back on their colour package and a free gift basket. Terms and conditions apply. Please contact the salon for details.

Darwin Irish Dance Association You have to admit that the choice to jump around in long sleeved lycra in the middle of the wet season shows dedication. This and a passion for their school is what motivates the team at Rince na h’Eireann Darwin Irish Dance Association. resolutions We all survived the silly season, and now the New Year has begun. Most of us make New Years Resolutions, but how many of us, keep them going? This month, DarwinLife shows you how to stay motivated and focussed on YOUR New Year Resolutions. Whether you have decided to change your career, take up a course, change your look, or lose those extra pounds, DarwinLife showcases the businesses and people who can help

THE GROUNDWORK FOR New Years Resolutions A new start and a fresh approach is required in this often tired dialogue around New Years resolutions. The old approach of just using your willpower and goal setting doesn’t work for most of us when making changes. Something always seems to get in the way. May be some smaller changes might be better, making you feel better and lay the ground work for having a solid foundation that helps you build the life you desire. So, before you try to make big changes, you also need to get happier first. One thought is that we don’t get happy because we are successful but we become successful because we are happy. Des-stressing and enjoying life with increase your chance of success with your goal. Research shows the path to happiness includes a mixture of: • meditation,

• journaling, • doing the things you are good at, • help others • Exercise • Do things you enjoy- its not selfish but essential • being grateful and express it (3 things each day), • practising forgiveness • Watch what you say to yourself and others • speak positively about life, yourself and others • resist putting yourself down, talking about how hard things are • Do stress reduction strategies like deep breathing a few times a day to lead to greater calm • Allow yourself that massage, it calms your body and mind and gives you the head space to be better to yourself • Be around happy people and those that support you • stay away from people who do the things you want to cut out • Art Markman suggests changing your email

address or password to reflect your goals. • Surround yourself with things that make you happy. • clean up your room, house, office etc and throw out lots of stuff that doesn’t reflect who you are and where you want to go. If your space is sorted then it is easier to think and do what you need to do to move forward. Lastly, think about why you want to make the change. For example, “ you want to exercise to give yourself more energy during the day, to fit into your clothes better and the health benefits to your body.” The ‘why’ for making a change, gives you motivation as it gives you a motive (reason) for action. Engage your imagination to imagine how it feels to be the person that has achieved this goal. Counselling with EASA can help you de-s tress and help sort out also what is getting in the way of achieving your goals. So stay calm, be happy and enjoy. By Ana Boskovic, EASA

HELLO SUNDAY MORNING Rachael Bettiens found herself in the place we all end up at some stage – on the merry-go-round of boredom. Doing the same thing, week in week out, and throwing herself into the same cycle of drinking, partying, being hung over and sleeping the weekend away, Rachael knew she wanted to change, she just needed a sign. She found that by chance in a newspaper article about ‘Hello Sunday Morning’, an organization that provides opportunities for individuals to make meaningful change in their lives through changing their drinking habits. Started by Chris Raine, it was developed into an online program from his blog of the same name, recounting his own experiences as a 22 year old taking on a trial of sobriety. Participants can sign up online to take a break from alcohol and engage with others doing the same thing. It provides accountability as well as a supportive community, with a positive outcome – waking up fresh and clear headed, with

plenty of time to enjoy your Sunday, and every other day in fact. ‘Hello Sunday Morning’ encourages people to sign up for 3 months, but supports those who commit for shorter or longer periods. Rachael’s 3 month challenge was so successful she continued for a year and she’s never felt better. She lost weight, her skin is glowing and she’s much happier. “Suddenly I have so much more money, and time. I can learn a language, travel, or volunteer.” Rachael is putting her extra time to good use as NT Community Manager for ‘Hello Sunday Morning’. It has NT Government funding and is absolutely the greatest way to start the New Year: changing your own habits, and improving our drinking culture, one Sunday at a time. Go to www.hellosundaymorning.org for more information or contact her at rachael@hellosundaymorning.org

Darwin Languages Centre There’s no better time than now to learn something new and Darwin Languages Centre is just the place to broaden your skills for 2013. Established by the Department of Education and Children’s Services over 15 years ago, the school provides opportunities for students from transition to Year 12 to learn a language. The school offers courses in 11 languages, from their new premises in Ludmilla. Classes are Monday to Thursdays from 4 to 6 pm and 6 of these languages are also taught at the Driver Campus Thursdays only, from 4 to 6pm. The school’s adult classes will start 9th February on Thursdays for 9 week terms. Adult classes will run from 5 - 6.30pm and include a selection of the most popular languages. Languages offered are Indonesian, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Tagalog, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek and English. The language choice offered has been determined with the community in mind. “When we find there is a community need we respond,” Principal Jeannie Bennett said. “In 2012 we added Tagalog and Korean classes as we had a number of people enquiring about these languages for their children and therefore enough students to make up the classes.”

Celebrating

of service solution success! Avant was opened due to client demand, with doors opening on January 27th 2003. So hard to believe that a decade has passed since then! In some respects it seems like yesterday, in others it seems like ages. So much has changed in this time. From our premises to our technology; from our industry certification to our ISO 9001 2008 certification (all with a record of zero non compliances); from the relatively strolling pace of 2002 to the race pace of 2013! Some things haven’t changed however, first and foremost amongst these being the dedication, talent and professionalism of the Avant team and our care for our clients and candidates. Avant is a French word it was chosen: • for its meaning, which is: in front, before, ahead, forward, premier, above all - something that since inception has been our mantra • because it started with an A and most importantly ended with NT for the Northern Territory – something we are all passionate about Avant has strived for 10 years to meet our clients and candidates needs and to provide quality service and effective solutions for their recruitment, training and HR service requirements. We have placed and worked on over 5,000 jobs since opening doors a significant contribution to the Northern Territory. We are all committed to our Continuous Improvement

Policy which covers all aspects of Avant business. With our ‘can-do’ attitude and being 100% Northern Territory owned and operated, we are in a unique position to offer our stakeholders innovative service solutions to meet their growing and future demands.

We recognise the support of our clients, candidates, suppliers and business partners in achieving this significant milestone and we sincerely thank you! The Avant team looks forward to the continued success of our business, our team and all our stakeholders. 2013 will be a fabulous year! With some wonderful new innovations and events. We look forward to working with you and helping you with our service solutions.

The Rise of the

DIGITAL Omnivore Ever heard of a digital omnivore? Chances are you might be one. Do you use a desktop computer at work? What about a laptop or notebook at home or on the road? Got an iPhone or other Smartphone? Better throw in an iPad for good measure. If this applies to you, then you my friend, are a digital omnivore. Don’t worry though, you’re not alone. Like their foodie counterpart, a digital omnivore is someone who enjoys a varied and balanced diet of digital content (that’s web, social media, apps and more), from a whole bunch of different devices and locations. With the rise and rise of Smartphones and tablet devices over the last couple of years, most Australian consumers fall squarely into this category. In fact, nearly 90% of the world’s population now uses a mobile device, and estimates have put the percentage of these that will be web-enabled Smartphones within the next two years at anywhere between 70 and 100%. You can expect Aussies to be at the higher end of that estimate, coming second only to Singapore in global uptake of Smartphone devices, and the 4G network and NBN rollout expected to change the game even further.

So what does this mean for you? Well if you’re in business or you need to communicate with any audience, it means a hell of a lot. It means it’s time to get mobile ready, now. In 2013, we will use the web everywhere, we will communicate everywhere, and we will expect your business to be there with us. You see, the revolution of mobile web doesn’t just mean we’re using different technology; it means we’re interacting in a whole new context, behaving in a whole new way, and expecting entirely new user experiences. Over the next few issues of Darwin Life, we will be delving into how your business can adapt to the changing digital landscape, remain visible to your clients and boost your online marketing presence. We’ll also talk about how your traditional marketing can work in conjunction with a great web

strategy. According to digitalbuzzblog. com, 71% of smartphone users that see a captivating TV, press or mobile advertisement will immediately do a mobile search. You don’t want to miss that. In February’s column we’re going to tell you all about responsive design, what it is, how it works and how your business can make the most of it. Later we’ll look at the place of apps in the world of the digital omnivore, how responsive design is working for businesses right here in the Territory, and what new trends and developments in mobile mean for us all (Windows 8 anyone?). Til then, happy feeding!

PEE WEE’S

SPECIAL

OUT

IN EVERY WAY BY JACK STEPHANE The moment that we were seated at Pee Wee’s, we sat momentarily; our senses tinglingly with the superb view of Darwin City across Fannie Bay before us; together with the sound of the waves lapping up against the rocks at our feet; all framed by a huge Flame tree above us. Now for the superb food and wine to come…

Simon, owner and chef; together with his chef Paul have created some unique dishes at Pee Wee’s that are sensational. NT Buffalo Fillet Carpaccio ($19) is one of them. Finely sliced pieces of prime buffalo fillet, stuffed with truffled mushrooms and served with slices of Grana Padana parmesan, crostini and a celeriac remoulade. The flavours were like the finest red wine: smooth and deep; yet light on the palate. A winner and a must to try when dining at Pee Wee’s. A popular main course is Double Roasted Ducking ($44). A crispy skin half ducking, served with prosciutto wrapped green beans, Kakadu plum and tamarind jus, steamed asparagus and a pastry fleurons. It is easy to see why this dish is one of Pee Wee’s favourites as the duck has a delicious light crispy skin; moist and succulent flesh; together with a tangy jus and lightly seamed vegies. Yum! Simon’s Eye Fillet steaks ($48) are 120 day Grain Fed Riverina (2+ marble score); for any steak lover, this is the finest quality possible and you can certainly taste it. The steak virtually melts in your mouth; accompanied by a pumpkin, potato, spinach and horseradish dauphinoise; together with a leek and King Island Blue cheese tartlet. A dessert created by the chefs is the Chilled Pina Colada Soufflé ($17); the perfect way the finish a delightful meal. Light in texture; yet with a delicious subtle flavour of Pina Colada in a chilled soufflé; served with caramelized pieces of pineapple and a pistachio tuille. Another winner Simon and Paul! The wines chosen to accompany our meal were from a cellar of over 60 local, NZ wines and French champagnes; together with a selection of tropical cocktails. For a perfect intimate dinner for 2 or a special function; Simon prides himself on only sourcing the best and freshest produce for his “Modern Territorian” cuisine. 5 Stars!

Belinda Marshall & Emerald Springs ROADHOUSE

After an action packed year of fundraising, Belinda Marshall has been crowned U.G.L.Y Bartender of the year for 2012, raising a whopping $60,336.18 from events and activities held at the Emerald Springs Roadhouse, with all funds going to the Leukaemia foundation. Belinda decided to get involved to try and raise money for the new patient care village that was being built in South Australia. As a result of their fundraising, one of the new houses has been named ‘Emerald Springs House’ and is for Northern Territory patients and families whose lives have been affected by Leukaemia.

With 97 other entrants across the NT, competition was tough, but the team at the roadhouse pulled together, and with a variety of fundraising activities, it’s really the customers at Emerald Springs Roadhouse that got them across the line. “The Emerald Springs customers were the ones who donated so much money and gave us their support in helping us achieve our goal of $50,000.” Said Belinda. From sales of U.G.L.Y critters at the bar, (later donated to Katherine Hospital), to Emerald Springs’ own ‘Hollywood walk of fame’, with stars for sale at $25 each (over 200 were sold), the ideas just kept coming. The team sold cupcakes, hand made jewellery, and goats milk soap. They held a silent auction, and sold wood fired pizzas at a glittering ‘Night at the Springs’ event in November and banded together to sponsor chef Matthew Walmsley’s 22km run from Hayes Creek to Emerald Springs raising almost $2000. The Katherine Multi Sports group also got in on the action, making the trek up the road by bike from Katherine to Emerald Springs and raising $3500. Belinda was recently presented with the Michael Abraham Memorial Trophy as the highest overall fundraiser, at an awards ceremony in December at Wisdom Bar & Café in Darwin. Belinda says the award should go to the broader community, all of whom did their bit to make sure the target goal was reached. From suppliers who donated goods, to artists like Craig Waddell who donated a painting for auction. “The Katherine community are so supportive and really get behind us and support the fundraising that we do. They are a fantastic group of people who go out of their way to give back to the community and help others.” Belinda would like to thank everyone who contributed in some way to this event.

Nothing ‘FISHY’

about this! Fish is definitely an area where people are really nervous. They’re overcooking it, they’re under cooking it, and don’t even mention the word bones.

Wild caught NT Barramundi in a Thai green curry, topped with crispy shallots

Some of the reasons I hear from time to time, include the inability to cook or serve seafood, with some people even going as far as not even eating seafood altogether out of fear that their culinary skills aren’t up to par, and the biggest and the most baffling to me would be the fear of choking on a fish bone. Well the truth is it is not really a fear of bones it is just a lack of information. When was the last time you had problem with chicken bones? That is right – never! Because you were taught where they are and how to deal with them. Watch a child from a culture bought up on seafood enjoying a meal of whole fish and you will soon see there is nothing to fear. So how do we deal with fish bones? You can debone a fish before or after cooking, as bones separate quite easily at either stage. But when it comes to fillets, it is much more enjoyable to have deboned your fish before you are sitting down at the table! Most fillets you purchase at your local fishmongers have already been deboned; to be sure ask if this is the case. My favourite trick to make sure a fillet is completely free of bones - turn a large bowl upside down lay the fillet over the curve of the bowl. If you carefully run your fingers from the tail to the front of

Wet Season Specials

www.supportntcaught.com.au

the fillet you will feel any bones left and they can be easily removed with a pair of small pliers. I can still hear some mums and/or dads worrying about their little ones. Well the only thing to worry about is if your children are not eating seafood, as health professionals recommend a minimum of two to three serves of seafood a week. Even better news is that there are seafood options without bones. Check out www.supportntcaught to find your local seafood supplier and then it is simply, just as; better still learn more about our industry and the people ‘like’ us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ supportntcaught.

is a welcome change. For those of you still on holiday, why not pop down for coffee and cake? The choice of desserts will be your hardest decision of the day. With staples like Sticky Date Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce and Vanilla Ice cream on offer as well as a regularly changing sweet selection, you can pull up a chair on the deck and enjoy the sea breeze with friends, as another New Year in the tropics begins.

THAILICIOUS Take a walk down Mitchell Street and you will find restaurants and eating houses everywhere. Which one to choose? Well, if you are interested in delicious Thai food then you can’t go past Thailicious. Walk up the stairs and you’re greeted by a smiling waiter ready to take you to your table, guide you through the menu and organise your drinks. The only open-air rooftop restaurant on the strip, customers have a choice of sitting at the usual tables and chairs or lounging on the floor with cushions scattered around low tables. It’s all very comfortable and relaxed. Now for the food. The menu is traditional Thai prepared by Thai chefs who know their stuff. Only grain fed beef, quality chicken and wild caught barramundi is used and no shortcuts are taken in creating the dishes - everything is cooked to order. To the Thailicious team cooking food from scratch every time is an important part of the Thailicious experience. This is a guarantee to the diner that the food is fresh. Owners, mother and son team Madhu and Romal, are friendly, happy people dedicated to customer service and quality food. They want you to enjoy your experience every time you visit. That’s their goal and every night. So, climb the stairs and savour the tastes of Thailand.

il Piatto The menu at il Piatto Skycity Casino is modern Italian with various pizzas, rissotto and pasta on offer, if you’re picky like me you’ll definitely find something suitable. We arrived at 6.30 and were shown to our seats, a private table in the far corner with fabulous views of the ocean. The modern interior is very slick with high ceilings and fancy chandeliers, the cushioned wrap around chairs very comfortable too. The first bite of my scotch pork fillet and belly had me in foodie utopia – it was unbelievably tender and tasty. It literally melted in my mouth – so much so that this is something old people with no teeth could really enjoy. My wife had the stuffed chicken breast with porcini mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and mozzarella cheese on potato puree with baby beans and sage sauce which she gave two emphatic thumbs up. She wolfed it down before I got a taste, which means it must have indeed been really good. To finish the evening we went with the dessert tasting plate featuring tiramisu, ice cream and dark chocolate panna cotta. The tiriamisu was fantastic, best I’ve ever had. The ice cream was great with the accompanying crushed nuts. And finally the dark chocolate panna cotta was equally awesome with a good whiff of dark chocolate and what appeared to be passionfruit in the syrup. My taste buds don’t lie and they said it was a great way to end the night. For more foodie reviews check out www.darwinfoodies.com January 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

Welcome to 2013 . As we move swiftly onward from the fragrance of pine across the land as Christmas trees are dismantled and stored away, i have found a Brew Pub with a year-round pine fixation in manly NSW called 4 Pines brewery.

Recently we visited the great little brew-pub in Manly, after a few cold ones and a generous serve of Fish and chips | KOLSCH battered fish and the famous chunky chip but really it was the beer we are here for. We shared the tasting paddle with Five of the best on offer- Kolsch, Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, Stout and a cider to finish. For me the multi award winning pale ale ticked the boxes. Head brewer Pete Klegg has done an excellent job with this beer, at 5.1% the Pale is a beer crammed with four varieties of American hop and a hefty malt bill that results in a deep amber beer with a touch of ruby. The hops give you aromas of pine and grapefruit before the malt gives way to a solid bitter finish. The 4 pines starred at the Precincts craft beer tasting dinner with Paul Mercurio and is now available at Darwin’s newest venue at the Waterfront. RAW Cloth Whether it is at Ladies Day, the Darwin Cup, at the Darwin festival or just out shopping – so many women stand out because they are wearing unique, bright, colourful outfits. I discovered that these outfits have all been made at a small shop in Aralia Street called Raw Cloth. I recently asked Jo Dunne, one of the owners, to tell me about her business.

Darwin has been our home for many years and I think our love of colour and fabrics originally stemmed from the natural beauty that surrounded us in Darwin - the raging red poinciana trees, the magenta bougainvilleas, the red skies at sunset. Mum, Rhonda, has always enjoyed collecting and sewing fabrics and creating outfits. Then we started going to Bali and became fascinated by the colours and designs of the hand-woven cottons and ikats. We would always bring home samples and make them into outfits. We decided to create a small collection of garments to sell at the 2001 Parap Christmas markets and that was really the beginning of Raw Cloth. Needless to say we sold everything and continued sewing and selling at the Nightcliff Markets from 2002 until we moved into our premises in Aralia Street in 2006. There are three of us here – Rhonda, who is without a doubt our guiding light, Kerrie Horgan, who has been with us for about four years now and fits in perfectly, and me - and I must not forget my 10 year old daughter Lucie, who is starting to share our passion for textiles and designs, and is now also helping us in her spare time. Mum and Kerrie do all the sewing and I do the majority of the cutting and patternmaking. But we all contribute to the design process and encourage everyone’s personal creativity - there is no right or wrong way with our designs. Marimekko fabrics dominated our early designs. We loved large vibrant designs plus the fabulous quality of the cloth. Our customers also fell in love with the fabrics. Such was our passion for Marimekko that we travelled to Finland in 2005 and toured the Corporation and met the designers it was a wonderful experience and only enhanced our love of Finnish fabrics and design. We then started using other fabrics and supporting Australian textile designers

such as Rachel Bird of Bird textiles, Ink and Spindle and Florence Broadhurst. We formed a close bond with the Maningrida Womens Centre and began using their delicately and intricately designed lino prints and screen printed textiles. We found their printed silk textiles particularly beautiful. That is when we met Kerrie. She was teaching textile art there. We currently have a display in our shop of outfits made from Maningrida silk. We have had a number of winning outfits at Ladies Day and at the Darwin Cup and we were privileged to dress Chloe Moo for the Melbourne Cup fashions on the field this year. She was one of the top 10 finalists and received many compliments on her entire outfit. We did receive a few phone calls from people interstate asking for us to create an outfit for them but this is not our core business. I think our primary business is to be creative and to appreciate every piece of beautiful fabric that comes our way. We feel so happy and privileged to be working with these fabric art pieces and to be able to raise awareness about the very talented designers, weavers and screen printers that are out there. Everything in this industry is a process that requires time and imagination and we really do appreciate the heart and the hand that goes into the work. The shop is a place that fills my senses. I just love it.

As we celebrate Australia Day this month I thought it is a great time to focus on Australian made cosmetic and skincare companies. In Australia we have a completely different set of factors that impact on skin compared to other parts of the world so it makes sense that Australian brands are arguably more compatible with our unique needs.

2

1

3

4 We can be proud to have an abundance of companies that focus on natural cosmetics as well such as Jurlique, Gaia Skin Naturals, Janesce, endota spa, Kora, MOR, OmVeda, A’kin and Sukin just to name a few. Here’s a few of my top Aussie picks: 1. ModelCo Based in Sydney ModelCo was created by former model agent Shelley Barrett to provide smart beauty solutions that are quick-fix, multi-purpose and unique. ModelCo focuses on innovative products, their first product LASH WAND Heated Eyelash Curler was the first of its kind, and was followed by the revolutionary airbrush tanning product TAN Airbrush in a Can which spawned a whole new market for DIY airbrush tanning. ModelCo is sold online and in Target, Priceline and other selected pharmacies. 3. Ultraceuticals Ultraceuticals is the Aussie brand to go to for high-performance skincare using sophisticated cutting edge technology to deliver clear, firm, glowing beautiful skin. Their professional-grade products and in-salon treatments address major skincare concerns like pigmentation, ageing and acne through proven ingredients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). In addition to their skincare range they also have a mineral makeup range that is free from talc and parabens which is great news for your skin too. They are Australian made, owned and do not test on animals. Ultraceuticals is available at Harmony Darwin Day Spa on Knuckey Street and Body Care Beauty Spot in 62

Coolalinga Village or online. 2. Natio Natio is not only Australian owned and made but they also tick the box of being a cruelty-free accredited company too. Founded in Melbourne in 1992 Natio is one of Australia’s fastest growing beauty brands delivering easily accessible and affordable plant based beauty care. They now have a huge range of products spanning skincare, makeup, sun protection, body care, spa ranges and mens products. Natio is sold in department stores and pharmacies across the country. 4. Face of Australia Face of Australia is Australian owned and made and 100% animal cruelty free. Since launching their first range of colour cosmetics in 1997 Face of Australia has evolved and offers high quality yet affordable cosmetics for the face, body and nails. You can find them at Priceline, Big W, Kmart and selected pharmacies or shop online.

get amongst it at endota spa darwin One of Darwin’s best kept secrets has to be the new endota day spa at Skycity Resort. So to say the Darwin Life team were excited about this month’s ‘Get Amongst it’ would be an understatement.

64

January 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

ndota day spa Darwin opened in Skycity in July 2012, in a tranquil corner bordering Cove restaurant at The Lagoon, just metres from Mindil Beach. It’s the newest addition to the endota day spa network - which has locations in every state and territory of Australia. The friendly, service-obsessed therapists at endota spa Darwin are trained to mirror the spirit of endota’s founders – two young women from Melbourne who decided to open a day spa before anyone was really sure what ‘day spa’ meant. The endota story is just a little bit legendary: Melanie Gleeson and Belinda Fraser opened their first endota spa down a dirt road in a quiet holiday town 1 hour from Melbourne back in 2001. Since that time, a few people seem to have cottoned on to just what a day spa is, and just how delicious a day spa experience can be. The two young entrepreneurs – who were in their mid-20’s when they started endota – have created an environment that feels exactly like what a great Australian day spa should be. According to Melanie, Darwin is one of their most ambitious – and most luxurious - day spas yet. “We have spas in resorts and hotels, in cities and beside golf courses,” she says. “They are all amazing in their own way, but they still feel like endota. We go for a modern Australian feel in our spas – recycled timber, white walls, polished floorboards – the kind of space you’d love your home to be.” “In Darwin, we got to step it up – a lot. Each treatment room has its own private courtyard, a couple of the rooms have their own outdoor spa. And instead of sitting inside in a lounge to unwind before and after treatments, up here we can take advantage of Darwin’s amazing climate and have the relaxation area outside – it’s beyond incredible and instantly relaxing.” There are 9 treatment rooms on site including a group room for hens’ days and girls’ spa days. There are also three double rooms for couples. Best of all, endota clients get full access to the beach and the heavenly Skycity Lagoon pool and bar, which are otherwise reserved for hotel guests. The Darwin Life team had a beyond-fabulous morning at endota. Each of us sampled something different from the endota menu – a facial, a massage, a pedicure and a ‘Scrub and Glow’ body treatment. “GREAT facial, and amazing massage technique.” “It was like she knew instinctively what hurt and needed attention.” “Check out my skin – it’s glowing. Really.” “Thrilled with my pedicure.” And so, raving but relaxed, we reluctantly floated out of endota’s sublime spa and back out to Mindil Beach. Would we go back? For sure. In fact, when can we?! Thank you to all the wonderful staff who made our “Get Amongst It” this month so magical.

endota is offering Darwin life readers a half hour massage and half hour facial for $99. Available through January when you mention this article.

OPERATORS,

take a break

Machine operators in the Northern Territory are being warned to get off their seats and take a break from using heavy machinery for long periods, or risk long-term spinal damage.

Operators commonly present to Chiropractors with a variety of spinal complaints including low back pain. In my May column last year I discussed the “Sit Right Campaign”, which is a national initiative released by the CAA to educate Australians about the adverse health consequences of prolonged sitting, and to pay more attention to their postures in the workplace. This campaign was particularly directed towards sedentary office workers, however this advice is equally, if not more important for people who operate machinery. Constant sitting is common in the building, farming and mining industries where an operator is not just sedentary but whose body is submitted to frequent vibration, heavy lifting, repetitive and forceful exertions and vibration. For machinery operators it is not uncommon to spend up to eight or more hours a day sitting in their truck or tractor. To make matters worse,

occasionally some machines have poorly designed or worn-out seating, which contributes to further problems like muscle stiffness, poor balance and mobility, as well as pain in the lower back, neck and hip. Have a look at the checklist below. • Position your seat to ensure that your hands and feet are comfortably placed on the controls and the low back is well supported. If you have a bad seat buy a low back support and attach it to backrest. • Occasionally get out of the seat and move about, even if it’s only 5 minutes every hour, it will help to prevent fatigue. (I know this is hard if you are busy but do your best). • If you think your posture is affecting your ability to work tell your boss. For more advice on how to Sit Right or to download the free widget, visit www.SitRight.com.au and for a posture assessment, your local CAA chiropractor.

Cataracts? What are cataracts? A cataract is a shadow in the crystalline lens in the eye, which can blur your vision. Early on, cataracts can create blurring of your night vision and glare problems as light is scattered by the cataract into the eye. Generally cataracts progress over time, contours and colour become less clear and vision is compromised. What causes cataracts? Cataracts are part of the aging process, though they don’t always affect vision. Development of cataracts can also be associated with exposure to UV light; and some side effects of specific high dose medication, oxidative stress, and trauma. What is cataract surgery? Cataract surgery involves removing the opaque crystalline lens and replacing it with a synthetic clear lens. Vision is restored very quickly. Cataract survey is performed under local anesthetic and as a day surgery procedure. There are precautionary recommendations to reduce the risk of damaging the eye; antibiotic drops, anti-inflammatory drops and

glaucoma drops post surgery for a short time. Can cataracts be prevented? Wearing UV protection, i.e. quality sunglasses that comply with Australian standards, may slow down and assist prevention of cataracts. Taking regular antioxidants e.g. vitamins A, C, E is recommended though not scientifically proven. Statins, whose role is to lower lipids, also have antioxidant characteristics. World Sight Day: World Sight Day recognizes preventable blindness. Age related cataracts are responsible for 48% of world blindness, about 18million people. Cataracts are the main cause of low vision in developing and undeveloped countries. In many third world countries surgical services are inadequate, there are long waiting lists, financial difficulties to access surgical procedures and there are a growing number of people with cataracts. A regular eye assessment by your Optometrist will monitor your ocular health.

promises; 1. I will eat less sugary, processed foods and carbohydrate rich foods 2. Each week I will increase my exercise frequency, length and intensity. By doing these 2 things you can improve: • Stress levels • Sleep • Insulin resistance • Inflammation levels • Blood sugar levels • Thyroid function • Premature aging • Muscle mass • Energy production • The loss of excess body fat. Who said being healthy was complicated or difficult? By following these two simple steps, your quality of life and longevity can be radically improved. What do they say about 13 – lucky for some, unlucky for others. I tend to think that we make our own luck and good health is no different.

So if the upcoming end of the world was your excuse for being apathetic about your health, eating junk food and expanding your waist line quicker than an expectant mother with twins, then 2013 is going to be a great year for you. What better time to finally start treating your body like a “castle” or a “sacred vessel” to carry you into old age. Now I know you have heard this before, and it may seem agonizing to some, but the key to optimal health is good food and good exercise. For those of you who are groaning at the thought of flexing those muscles my message is “try it, you might like looking and feeling better”. New Year is a time for setting goals that are invariably broken within a few weeks. So this year let’s forget about goals and commit yourself to 2

“It’s just a Sprained Ankle”…Think Again Taking the necessary steps to treat a sprained ankle is so important in avoiding ongoing issues. On the whole, sprained ankles are not treated well. Karen Schneider Sports Physiotherapist | Territory Sportsmedicine

If you play a sport that has a high level of ankle injury, you can reduce the chances of spraining your ankle through strength and balance training and using braces or taping. Many people believe that bracing and taping weakens the ankle – this is not the case. If you do sustain an ankle injury, you must administer immediate first aid and present for assessment and professional care. 1. Application of the RICER concept • Rest • Ice • Compression • Elevation • Referral to a Physiotherapist 2. Assessment will involve diagnosis

of the structures injured. This can be a simple strain through to ligament rupture or even fractures. 3. Early treatment of a minor injury will see you back playing sport almost immediately. The time out of sport is dependent on the seriousness of the injury. 4. Untreated ankle sprains can go on giving problems for months and even years. The normal mobility and strength are usually not regained. 5. If the ligaments are severely injured the ankle will always require ongoing taping, bracing or even reconstruction. So if you hear anyone suggest “It is just a sprained ankle” encourage them to seek physiotherapy assessment and treatment ASAP.

Athletic

TEAM

OF THE MONTH

Waratahs Football Team

AGE GROUP? Under 18’s, which means that all the guys are 18 and six months or under by the time the season starts. HOW LONG HAS THE TEAM BEEN TOGETHER? Many of these guys have played together since Auskick. There are also a number of players who have joined along the way, either from other clubs or that have moved to the Territory. Some players who

originally played with Waratahs stopped playing and are now returning to the game. WHAT QUALITIES DO EXPERIENCED FOOTBALL PLAYERS POSSESS? Leadership, good skills, a willingness to help others and a good, on field footy brain so they can read the play; they recognise their opponents weakness and look for opportunities to use new skills developed during

training, whilst playing a game. CAN ANYONE JOIN A FOOTBALL TEAM? Girls and boys can now play footy in the Territory from about ten years old. While team numbers are limited each week for player selections, anyone can join a club and train to improve their skill level and gain selection. HOW CAN PEOPLE BECOME INVOLVED IN THIS SPORT?

Young people can join in Primary school through the Auskick and school footy programs. There is then usually a natural progression to join a local club but players can join any club they wish in the Territory. WHO HAVE BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING TEAM TO VERSE THIS SEASON? Palmerston, they are reigning premiers and looking good again this year.

This is the Smallest Car

You’ve Ever Seen

How do you relaunch a classic car brand? For a lot of companies, it means the traditional steps: redesigning it with sleeker lines, putting better parts under the hood, and updating it with 21st century amenities, such as GPS, seat heaters and satellite radio.

For the makers of the Peel mini-car, the Guinness World Record holder for the smallest street-legal car in the world, it’s all about thinking small and efficient. Fortunately, there’s plenty of desire for the cute little vehicles. “The few original Peel cars that are left in the world, they easily run over £110,000 and £120,000 each,” says Faizal Khan, owner and commercial director of Peel. “For us to be selling road-legal cars for around $10,000 is a good value.” Khan and his team are lovingly producing mini-cars, which were handbuilt in the ‘60s on the Isle of Man, to appear exactly as the original models do. Only, this time, some of them have an extra-special kick under the hood -- an electric motor that makes the already efficient and city-friendly car almost completely without a carbon footprint. Q&A with Faizal Khan, Owner and Commercial Director, and James Buggle, Head of Innovation of Peel What about Peel’s design makes it relevant now? Khan: Obviously, it holds the Guinness Book of World Records as the smallest car of all time -- and has held it since the car was in production in the ‘60s. Cyrill [Cannell, Peel’s inventor] was ahead of his time, and

he was trying to predict the future -- which he basically did. He thought there would be a need for a small, personal mobility vehicle that you can easily maintain and is also easy to park and easy to run. Also, there’s the quirkiness -- the British quirkiness, especially. It’s very easily distinguishable. It also, up until the reinvigoration, has been a unicorn vehicle: Many people have heard of it, but not many had actually seen one. It’s likely you don’t remember the first time you saw a Ferrari, because they’re so regular now, but you will always remember the first time you saw a Peel. Buggle: The Peels kind of fit between the two camps, they have convenience of scooters and mopeds while having some of the comforts and features of cars. With high fuel prices and the growing concerns over the environment and global warming, their economic, energy efficient, green credentials have come back in to fashion. And the small, cute and quirky Peels kind of put a fun and retro spin on the green car concept. Plus, I think there is something about designs that are small, simple and a bit different -- they seem to have always had an appeal. Sourced from Mashable.com

DOES YOUR BIKE

FIT YOU?

Whether you cycle for fun, fitness, commuting to work or racing on the weekend, correct set up of your bike is important in helping to prevent pain and injury. If you are experiencing pain in your neck, back or knees whilst riding, or numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, it is likely your bike set up is not optimal and you would benefit from having your bike set up correctly. Additionally, optimal bike fit will improve your pedalling efficiency and aerodynamics, both of which will help you to bike faster. The bike fit process involves: • Recording your goals in cycling. • Assessing the injuries you may currently have or areas you experience pain while cycling.

• Observing your flexibility, core strength, skeletal alignment, leg length, hip and knee angles and foot position while pedalling. • Observing your technique whilst you are pedalling, and identifying any faults that need correcting. The benefit of using a Physiotherapist to fit your bike is that they have extensive knowledge in injury treatment and prevention, a comprehensive understanding of human biomechanics, cycling biomechanics and training principles. During the bike fit process we will have noted any muscle length or strength deficits you may have and can prescribe a home program of stretches and strengthening exercises to complement your cycling if required. Josh Tidswell Sports Physiotherapist at Territory Sportsmedicine has completed a course with the Physiotherapist for the Australian Cycling Team and is available for assessments. The only requirements are that you bring your bike and allow one hour.

January is here, the beginning of a new year. We are seeing a lot of new people on our roads that have been relocated here with all the new projects so give all vehicles plenty of space. Allow merging traffic in and use your indicators especially when entering and exiting roundabouts, so other motorists know what you are doing. While driving on the main roads stay in left lanes if not overtaking other vehicles. While I was driving along the highway, I noticed a policeman on a trail bike riding up to each vehicle checking to see if motorists are wearing their seat belts or possibly not on mobiles. I am pleased to say he didn’t pull anyone over. Well done motorists! School is back at the end of the month so we need to remember to slow down in school zones and keep an eye out for the young ones on push bikes etc. Still plenty of rain, roads are very slippery, gutters and intersections pooling with water which may cause your vehicle to plane out of control, so we need to slow right down when raining. Don’t forget to turn lights on in overcast and rainy conditions. Make sure wipers are in good working order. Make sure tyres are in good condition. Let’s try and have a safe year and not be a statistic on our roads. All the best for 2013 . Hope you all have a successful and safe year. From all the staff at Paul’s Service Centre

SERVICE

all the Way!

Cruising Travel & Adventure | DarwinLife

Paul McCourt started his service centre in 1998 in purpose built premises, on prime real estate in Stuart Park. The appeal of owning new premises encouraged him to buy the land and build, and the gamble has paid off. In almost 15 years of trading, the business with 3 staff has swelled to a team of 9 mechanics, 2 office staff and last but definitely not least – Mark on car washes. The combined team operates with over 100 years of experience and many of the staff have lived in the Territory for most of their lives. Paul has been in Darwin for more than 40 years, and says the strength of his business is definitely his highly skilled team of hard working Territory blokes. Paul says the primary focus of the business is delivering great customer service and care. “Our target is to have our customers walking out with a smile on their face. We rely on word of mouth so each customer’s experience is important, every time. We try and make their experience here a positive one and hope they’ll tell their friends.” Paul’s has been serving as a stepping-stone for a number of people with disabilities, who get valuable work skills and experience while

building their confidence in the workplace. Mark came to Paul’s Service Centre 7 years ago from Project Employment, and started washing cars there. The service was so well received, Paul has kept him on as a full time paid employee. If you’re lucky enough Mark will choose your car next time you’re getting a service! Paul is committed to innovation, and in his ongoing quest to stay ahead of the competition; he is doubling his premises next year, building state of the art facilities on land next door to the existing centre. Paul is off to America shortly to check out mechanical workshops and equipment, ensuring the new centre has the very latest in equipment and technology. In the meantime you can check out their other innovation - the Paul’s Service Centre App. You can contact the office direct from the app, submit a service request and check out information about vehicle care. Oh and there’s a torch! So check it out on your iPad or smartphone, or go in and see Luke and Anthony in the office. THE SAILOR

Many of us will have watched the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race on Boxing Day while we relaxed and nibbled on Christmas leftovers. Those who are not familiar with sailing could likely get the impression that events like this are reserved for people who have lots of money because the telecast concentrates on the maxi yachts at the front of the fleet.

For a friendly honest service of your vehicle come to But consider the fact that every yacht in the race needs a compliment of crew and maxi yachts need 25 to 30 to sail and maintain them during the race. These crew are in the main ordinary sailors from a wide variety of backgrounds and their wealth is their ability, which has been derived from years of training and hard work, just like any successful athlete in any sport. One such crewman is Darwin’s Mark Edmonds. A product of the Darwin Sailing Club’s junior program, Mark spent most of his after school time sailing either by himself in his Minnow or later with a variety of owners on different types of yachts. FLIGHT CENTRE’S TOP 10 DESTINATIONS FOR 2013

TRAVELLERS with a keen eye for emerging destinations should check out the Flight Centre Travel Group’s top 10 spots for 2013. To get the most out of a holiday, speak to a Flight Centre travel consultant about cheap flights, accommodation options, cruise itineraries and private tours. New Zealand Cheap flights across the Tasman are making New Zealand hot on the travel radar next year. Whether it is families with young kids, couples or groups of mates or die-hard movie fans of The Hobbit trilogy. (The film hits cinemas on Boxing Day.) INSIDER TIP: Wine and food lovers should check out Waiheki Island, a 35-minute ferry ride from Auckland. Renting a house is easy, with plenty of properties offering self-contained facilities and outstanding views. Hong Kong Hong Kong’s calendar is buzzing with events yearround, from Chinese New Year celebrations to international sports tournaments, such as Hong Kong Rugby Sevens. INSIDER TIP: Visit during the Hong Kong Summer Spectacular from late June to late August, where you can see the Dragon Boat Carnival and Lan Kwai Fong Beer & Music Festival. Cook Islands For a taste of Polynesia and a great value for money holiday, plunge into the Cook Islands. The Cook Islands serve up a blend of tropical recreational activities, from snorkelling in turquoise lagoons, exploring the jungles or learning to dance like the locals. INSIDER TIP: Water lovers can venture to the coral atoll of Aitutaki for its triangular lagoon and array of wildlife, including giant clams, turtles and whitespotted eagle rays. Whitsunday Islands, as well as Lady Musgrave Island, Lizard Island, Dunk Island and Fitzroy Island. INSIDER TIP: Book a camping permit prior to your trip. Spots on the islands can be booked 11 months in advance. Burma Burma, or Myanmar, remains one of the world’s most untouched destinations. 2013 is going to be big for Burma, with tour companies in Australia reporting an overwhelming interest in new tours to the region. INSIDER TIP: It’s best to explore Burma with a reputable tour operator. These companies organise guided treks so travellers have the opportunity to explore the floating markets and learn the history of monasteries and Buddhist temples. Hawaiian Islands Aussies are flocking back to Hawaii - especially on the Hawaiian Islands of Oahu, Kauai, Maui and Hawaii Island. Combine a holiday to the main island with a visit to two or three neighbouring islands. INSIDER TIP: Getting to Hawaii’s four main islands is very easy, with short 30 to 50-minute interisland flights departing from Honolulu regularly. AUSTRALIA DAY The wonderful thing about January is that the holidays continue, with kids going back to school later in the month and our nation’s favourite holiday, Australia Day, this year falling on a Saturday – that means we have a long weekend to celebrate all things Aussie! The great thing about Australia Day is that it’s your day to do what you please, whether you’re into thong throwing contests, welcoming new citizens or simply getting out of town and appreciating our wonderful Top End landscape! You’d be hard pressed to find something more Australian than swimming with the crocs in Darwin! Test your Aussie courage by diving with monster crocs at Crocosaurus Cove. Not feeling so brave? Play it safe(r) fishing for juvenile crocs on a platform, safely behind a barrier. Or test your mettle, holding a baby crocodile. Territory rates mean your entry ticket is valid year-round. Nothing says Australia Day like a barbie, so whip out your good tongs, pack the esky and go beachside! There are some great vantage points of the harbour with

Find your free back massage this Australia Day weekend! There’s nothing like it, ‘nooking’ in under a spectacular cascade as some of the world’s purest waters rumble ecstatically over you. You have your neck poised, the water hits that perfect spot and from head to toe every muscle is pulsing to natures soothing rhythm. Sure it sounds like a line out of a day spa brochure, but it’ll make you feel a million bucks and best of all – IT’S FREE. Finding a “NOOK”: 1. Find a fall that isn’t too dangerous or too weak. Anything much taller than a cascade and the water is far too heavy to be safe or comfortable. We’ve listed a few locations below.. 2. Choose a fall that you don’t have to climb above water level. It’s much safer and usually that’s where you’ll find a rock shelf with good

leg room OR a shallow shelf where you can stand. 3. There’s less drag under the water, so swim under (not too deep!) for easy access. 4. Feel out your fall, use your hands and feet to find some ‘nooks’ that have a good grip. It might take you several minutes to find a comfortable sitting position. Rubber reef walking shoes are brilliant if you’re on a smooth shelf. 5. Wear a brimmed sun hat - look for the ones that have a sagging brim which can protect your eyes and give you nice breathing space and make sure you apply sunscreen 6. Remember also that you should never bring glass bottles to a waterfall or swimming area. barbeque facilities along East Point, Casuarina Coastal Reserve, Nightcliff foreshore and Charles Darwin Park. Hold an Aussie Day cook-off and see who can produce the best snag sanga. Want to get out of town? Head down the Arnhem Highway towards Kakadu National Park and stop in at the Didgeridoo Hut & Art Gallery where you and your mates can blow out all that hot air. Let your creative side shine designing your own Australia day themed didgeridoo. Once you’ve shown off your artistic prowess hit the road for another hour until you get to the Bark Hut Inn where it will be time to stop for a truly Aussie home-made buffalo meat pie. Why not add a resolution or two to make your home a little healthier?

NEW YEARS Resolution

…for your Home

It can often unknowingly be subjected to quite a lot of toxins, which inevitably you and your family live with and take in. The average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals, many of which we are unable to see, smell or taste. While these chemicals may be tolerated individually and in small doses, problems can arise when one is exposed to them in combination or in larger doses. Everyone’s tolerance level is different depending on genetics, nutritional status, stress levels and previous contact with many chemicals. There are a multitude of aspects to consider in making a green and healthy home, but here are just 10 top tips to choose from to make your home a little healthier this year. 1. Add a water filter to your tap water and shower. Many of the contaminants in tap water become gases at room temperature. A shower filter can help keep these toxins from becoming airborne and absorbed into your skin. Filtered tap water is better than plastic bottled water. 2. Don’t heat food or store it in plastic. Most plastic contains bisphenol-A (BPA) that migrates into the food stored in these containers. BPA has been linked to thyroid and other hormonal problems. It is commonly found in plastic water bottles, baby bottles, canned food and drinks. 3. Ditch air fresheners which are loaded with toxic ingredients that have been linked to hormonal imbalances, mood swings, fatigue, brain damage and many other symptoms. Harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in air fresheners include benzene and formaldehyde. Benzene exposure can damage bone marrow, which can decrease red blood cells and affect immunity. Long-term exposure to airborne benzene has also been linked to increased risk of anemia and leukemia. Formaldehyde, a known carcinogenic neurotoxin, can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. Avoid products labelled as essence oils, perfume oils or fragrance oils. Use products that contain pure essential oils and fully disclose all ingredients. 4. Eliminate mould. A few drops of tea tree oil with a couple drops of dish detergent can be used on a cloth to wipe down walls, floors and other surfaces to help kill mould. Then prevent mould with a wipe down of oil of

cloves. 5. Replace toxic lawn and garden pesticides and herbicides with less harmful natural ones. 6. Take your outdoor shoes off when in the house. Most household dirt, pesticides and lead come in on your shoes. Wear an indoor only set of shoes or thongs or go barefoot. Use the floormats at entranceways to wipe your shoes or feet. 7. Choose no-VOC paints for your home. VOCs are volatile organic compounds, many of which are linked to cancer. Some of the big hardware shops now sell a limited amount of low VOC paints, otherwise order online from interstate or enlist a registered ‘GreenPainter’. 8. Switch from standard household cleaning products to cleaner and greener ones. These don’t damage your health or the environment’s as much and work as well as the mass marketed ones. You can also use basic ingredients you have around the house, for instance, vinegar in place of bleach, baking soda to scrub your tiles. 9. Switch from sponges to natural cloths for cleaning. Most sponges have been treated with a chemical called triclosan, which is toxic to the skin and immune system. Microfibre and biodegradable bamboo cloths are good alternatives. Pop cloths & dish brushes in the dishwasher every time you put a load on to sterilize. 10. Rest well with non-toxic bedding. Most beds actually have more synthetic chemicals than a barrel of crude oil, as are made almost entirely of petrochemical derivatives. Plus fire retardant chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), a chemical linked to liver, thyroid and neuro-developmental toxicity. Make your current bed safer with a 100% latex or certified organic wool topper. If in the market for a new mattress, latex ones fare really well here in the tropics as are naturally mould and dust mite resistant. Regular poly/cotton sheets and pillow cases contain formaldehyde which does not wash out. Formaldehyde causes immunological problems and has been linked to cancer. Great healthy options are sheets made with certified organic cotton or else bamboo, which is also super soft and cooling-great for the tropics!

Lighting your

World

Start the New Year in a new light by reinvigorate a tired room with new lighting, turning it into an inviting, cosy and sophisticated space. Start with problem areas If there are dark corners in your room that need extra light use floor and table lamps to create pools of light that can be turned on at different times throughout the day and evening instead of using your standard ceiling lights. Keep lighting balanced If the room is large, or zoned into different areas you need to work out if each part of the room has adequate lighting for its purpose, ensuring that no particular area will overpower any of the other areas, once all the lights are on. Ideally, each different area should have its own pendant and accent lighting to create atmosphere. Getting the proportions of your lights right is just as important as the quality of light they’ll give. Think of the atmosphere you want to create This will help you decide how bright the lighting needs to be. Overall, it’s worth fitting and buying lights that can be dimmed – both pendants and table lamps. Have you got space for wall lights? They are an excellent way to

Experiment with different types of fittings in the one are and don’t be scared to match styles.

provide soft, low-level light to give warmth. Look at light direction Consider what do you want to get from the lights? If you want to highlight the height and decorative effects of your ceiling, you’ll want to include uplighters. If you want to properly light a desk area, you’ll need a desk lamp or spotlight. If you want to create a cosy corner, you’ll need a low set or table lamp that throws a soft light just in one area of a room.

Pools make nice

BEDS FOR BUGS

For further information contact:

Jeremy O’Donoghue Principal, O’Donoghues First National Real Estate on 8942 8942

As the weather starts to warm up, so too does the propensity for pools to become breeding grounds for bugs.

O’Donoghues First National Real Estate Principal Jeremy O’Donoghue, says recent research showed that 96 per cent of Australian pools take a dive in health during the cooler months, leading to a build up of harmful bacteria which could affect the health of those swimming in it. “Untreated pools can cause real harm to family and friends with the increased levels of microorganisms, algae and bacteria posing serious health risks like diarrhoea, ear infections and eye and skin irritations,” Jeremy said. “Out of more than 1000 pool water samples recently taken across the country, just four per cent of pools showed a healthy pH balance and only one in five were properly chlorinated. “Pool owners, including tenants leasing properties with pools, should take the time now to check their pools so that they can enjoy them safely throughout the warm summer months.” Jeremy said using the services of a professional technician, to conduct regular water health and safety checks is sensible and frugal. “Expert services are far more affordable than it would be to seek help once the water has turned ‘green’ from flourishing

bacteria”. “Not to mention the reduced emotional stress and costs associated with a loved-one, friend or tenant becoming sick through infected pool water.” O’Donoghues First National Real Estate offers these top five tips for early-season pool maintenance to ensure pools are healthy and ready for the wet season: 1. Check the pool equipment to ensure it is in property running order. 2. Ensure the pH level is within healthy levels. 3. Make sure chlorine levels are adequate to disinfect all microorganisms. 4. Vacuum and skim the pool regularly. 5. Organize a regular professional check up. “Now is also a good time to check the pool’s compliance with NT laws and regulations,” Jeremy said. “Each state and territory in Australia has laws governing pool safety that all pool owners and operators must comply with. “So, make sure you stay safe this summer and can swim with free abandon.”

Decor Trends It’s a brand new year and what better time to consider giving your home a facelift!

A fresh coat of paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to update your home and transform your living space, whether on the inside or out. Brightly coloured walls, however, are a thing of the past, as they tend to date the overall look of your home. So why not give your home that modern classic touch by using the muted soft colours such as antique white and the myriad of tones that form part of this pallette. These simplistic colours work well together, and allow the space to open up. Feature walls are still a great way to create atmosphere and enhance a room with colour to tie in with a theme and compliment furnishings. It is also much easier to change the colour of one feature wall, when you get tired of it, than try and paint a whole house. I would always recommend using low sheen paint as it more durable and much easier to keep clean. This is a top tip if you have kids with sticky fingers. The lower the sheen, the more accepting it is to the eye, should you have an older home, with

wall imperfections. Brightly coloured exteriors are also on their way out, so choose colours from a neutral palette. The exterior of your home is your streetscape, so the more neutral, the more mass appeal it will have, which is particularly important for re-sale. We can also see a major come back with high fashion wallpaper. Yes, wallpaper! This can be seen all around Darwin at the moment including the shopping centres and restaurants. Be the envy of all your friends and really make your home stand out. Have a feature wall with a brightly patterned paper. The current trends are florals on one feature wall and the other walls in soft contrasting colours, or a subtle shades of paint hues to compliment, rather than fight the featured wallpaper. Always seek the advice of a wallpaper specialist for hanging, as this is a little trickier than you think. So why not kickstart your new year with a new look for your Home!
