Inside the Ichthys Project There is no mistaking that construction of the Ichthys Project is now well underway with a hive of activity in Darwin Harbour, on Blaydin Point and at the Accommodation Village site in Howard Springs. The Macmahon-John Holland joint venture carrying out the $340 million civil works package at Blaydin Point has now cleared more than 200 hectares of land, the equivalent of about 160 100 Olympic size swimming pools of topsoil in preparation for construction of the LNG facilities.

Blaydin Point Facts • More than 900,000 man-hours on site without a lost time injury. • More than 520 personnel working on site. • More than a million tons of stone has been delivered to site from local quarries. Site preparation work at Blaydin Point well underway ahead of construction of the LNG facilities.

The majority of personnel required to build the Howard Springs Accommodation Village are being sourced locally.

The Howard Springs Accommodation Village is also progressing well with the first 1000 Ichthys Project personnel expected to take residence in around six months. Territory based companies are responsible for 90 per cent of the work carried out to date and it’s this local knowledge that will be invaluable as the wet season approaches.

Accommodation Village Facts • Approximately 230 personnel on site, with a peak of 400 required to build the facilities. • 240 accommodation units are already on site being installed - enough for 960 fly-in-fly-out personnel. • The site footprint is approximately • Work has started on most structures required to support the village, including a 1750 seat diner, sports and entertainment facilities, tavern, medical centre, infrastructure services and the administration

We would like to thank you - our loyal readers, steadfast advertisers and talented contributors for helping to make this possible. We are proud to be part of the Darwin community and look forward to presenting the people, businesses and events that make this city what it is, for many more years to come.

The latest Waterfront venue The Precinct has opened. With the craft beer craze sweeping the country, Darwin can now boast its own pub dedicated to the amber fluid. The Precinct is not just a craft beer pub. This is a pub with a view offering fine wines, cocktails, delicious food and great entertainment in an enviable location. Read all about it on page 10.

The latest venue to hit the Waterfront, The Precinct offers beers and ciders on tap with a combination of commercial and specialty brews to tempt any beer or cider ‘geek’. Owners Darren Lynch, Ryan Jenkins and John Tourish have years of experience in the hospitality industry. All three head up other businesses: Darren owns Il Lido Restaurant on the Waterfront, Ryan has the Tennant Creek Hotel and John the Walkabout Tavern in Nhulunbuy. It made sense for these go-getters to come together and start a new venture in Darwin and craft beer was the perfect fit. Walk into the pub and the first thing you notice is the long bar and more interestingly, a glassed front keg room. Always wanted to know where beer comes from? Well, now it’s all there in front of you – kegs, lines, gauges, the whole machination. It’s a matter of the back of the house being brought forward. The Precinct wants you to love the whole entertainment experience. One end of this long and spacious pub holds the taps, a space for a DJ & live music and a dance floor. At the other end is a dining area with an open-kitchen and a very cool cocktail bar. With 3 very distinct spaces –pub bar, dining room or outside on the Terrace - you can get right into the party or just sit down, relax with a cocktail or glass of wine and chat with friends. Back to the beer – can’t decide which one you want to try? That’s fine. The Precinct crew choose 4 craft beers and place them on tasting trays so you can try before you make the big decision. The “Precinct Selection” will be changed on a regular basis so there is always something new to sample. The Precinct also offers pub food with an extensive menu to tempt your taste buds. It’s modern pub food with a difference; think basic beef burger meets Wagyu heaven. The food is as important as the drinks in this venue. The Precinct crew wants you to eat well and take your time. It’s all about the experience. Let’s talk comfort. As any woman knows, its important we look and feel good on a night out so the bathroom has great lighting and a full length mirror to make sure your looking your best from top to toe. The location is also a talking point. Right in front of parkland and overlooking the wave pool, The Precinct is a pub with a view. With windows that open wide and outside seating for 80 and more than 500 throughout the whole venue. The Precinct offers a relaxed casual feel for both drinking and dining. You can spend the day at the pool or the lagoon and then wander into The Precinct for a long cold drink and maybe a snack. During the day you can cruise on in in your casual gear and grab a drink and a meal. It’s like being on holiday. The Precinct is the whole deal. It is a bar, a restaurant, and an entertainment space all in one place. Start your night at The Precinct and you will never want to leave.

DarwinLife turns 3 this month and we have come along way in those three years. Not only have we created vibrant, entertaining publications produced as the voice of the people of the Northern Territory, we have also brought The Darwin Life and Home and the Big Boys Toys Expos to town with 40,000 people attending over that time. We have celebrated the Darwin Cup Carnival in our Atrium Marquee and over 1,000 partied with us. DarwinLife Magazine is the only monthly lifestyle magazine in Darwin. We distribute 180,000 copies a year. The magazine is produced by and for the people who live here. It is a voice of our community. KidsLife was born in April as a separate publication catering to the rapidly growing young family market; a magazine dedicated to mums, dads and kids in Darwin. This beautifully crafted publication shares stories, provides information and engages the readers by giving them a refreshing and entertaining view on parenthood. In November it becomes part of DarwinLife. All around the country, in every hotel room, there is a book highlighting the best on offer for that region or city. At last the Northern Territory can boast the same. NTLife has arrived. This glossy hardcover which comes out twice a year with a distribution of 48,000 copies, is filled with stunning photos and essential information for the visitor arriving in the Territory ready to explore and experience our unique landscape, culture and communities. NTLife has it all. We would like to thank everyone for supporting the DarwinLife Family over the past three years and look forward to collaborating for many more years to come!

POWER

PARTNERS ALL ASPECTS RECRUITMENT & HR SERVICES Janine McDonald & Annette Law met through a mutual friend early January 2011. As soon as the introduction and conversation began they realised that they had the same vision and passion. An instant decision was made from their first meeting. Both Annette and Janine had always dreamed of owning their own companies for many years and both felt from their life experiences, they had the skill sets to implement a professional recruitment agency more personal than others around. They established All Aspects Recruitment & HR Services in NT & QLD, serving industry in the SME and government sectors. Offering multiple services, they cover all aspects of Recruitment & HR Services including helping other SME’s with their internal processes and procedures. They believe their point of difference in comparison to other recruitment agencies is one partner has over 20 years’ experience in Recruitment and the other with 20 years’ experience in HR, providing high quality services that cover all aspects of Recruitment in a open and transparent manner.

It’s not just about selecting a person and placing them into a vacancy, it’s about putting a person in a job they really want to do. Ensuring that they fit well culturally, and also that the company’s expectations are met as well. Both parties must be satisfied to ensure that the whole process is successful. It is important to treat both employees and clients with respect as their business keeps All Aspect’s business viable. Janine & Annette have a very positive working relationship where conversations and negotiations are about being open and transparent. Both Directors feel they have a balance and aim to make the best decision for both clients and candidates. Janine and Annette believe that going into a successful partnership means you have to ensure that you have trust and respect for the other

partner with both putting in the hard yards. Open communication is vital as is acknowledging each other’s strengths and weaknesses. They provide as much support to each other as possible, realising they may do things differently but know both are working towards the same goal. Last year Annette came up with an idea to purchase a UK based Global Oil, Gas and Energy Recruitment Company to support all the new projects in Darwin. After lots of discussion Janine supported the idea. Now having a Global database of experienced Oil & Gas experts is starting to pay off as more and more clients are calling on All Aspects Recruitment to fill those highly skilled roles. Strong partnerships are based on trust and respect; Annette and Janine’s partnership is very strong indeed.

HR HELP Have you had a day at work when things just did not feel right? You and your staff could not connect, you felt distant, your staff felt distant and you left work at the end of the day feeling that nothing was certain anymore. Your staff are your greatest asset and they are the one resource that is most easy to adapt, upgrade and improve. Unlike computers and equipment that wear out or become obsolete; your staff are your human resource. We generally find that human resource issues are either resolved based on past experiences or ignored in the hope that the problem will go away. In many instances the outcome is less than desirable. The Fair Work Act and our multi-generational workforce now require a new thinking and actions that are responsive, supportive and have outcomes that leave staff feeling acknowledged and valued. Most staff resign from organisations if they don’t understand the business or feel undervalued or not acknowledged or the management and supervision of the business is lacking. The cost of replacing staff and ensuring minimal turnover is worth minimising, staff are not equipment and it is within your control to manage this resource wisely. Staff development is an ongoing process from induction through promotion and dealing with the tough stuff. At times you need to find your way through the daily challenges and support your staff needs in due process matters and skills enhancement. What you may need is our HR Help Desk especially if you are time poor, a small business operation or finding it hard to locate a human resources specialist. At Biznorth we now have the capacity and expertise to handle your human resource queries, assist in policy interpretation, guide your key staff or provide a service in dealing with staff matters, difficult situations and people development. We provide a range of consultancy services, psychometric assessments, performance appraisal systems, staff and supervisor training, coaching and mentoring. We work both at our site and yours; our HR Help Desk is your first point of enquiry.

Why bother going to that seminar? In these madly hectic days, where the pace seems to be set permanently at flat out and we all have many competing priorities we tend to say ‘no’ to seminars, conferences etc. Or worse we say “yes” and then reneg and do a ‘no show’.

So why bother going to a personal or career building seminar? Why spend money on sending your staff ? It’s simple: the brain is a muscle and it needs exercising! You can’t put a dollar value on personal and professional development and as Mother Theresa said ”To keep the lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it”. Continued learning and the professional development of you and your team is necessary to maintain an individual and business advantage. Professional development of staff is a corner store of workforce planning. It is critical that training and learning programs have a dedicated place in every organisation’s budget.

So how do you get return on investment for seminars and conferences?

• Firstly recognise there is value in learning. • Make sure that any seminar or conference is in line with your organisation’s strategic goals. • Ensure the program is linked to specific outcomes that are relevant to the individual and/or service provision of the organisation.

Alison Hucks FRCSA, CAHRI Principal, Avant

• ‘bring it home’: make it a policy that any staff member attending a function, course, seminar, conference etc shares their knowledge with the rest of the team on their return. A simple way to do this is the ‘Stop, Start, Continue’ method. From knowledge gained – what’s one thing that you would stop, one thing you will start and one thing you would continue. Full reports are great but in today’s world not readily referred to. • Follow up: diarise to measure and monitor outcomes with the participant. For example: after 3 weeks or after the buzz has died down – check in with the participant and recap their learnings and how they have been able to apply them in their work. Don’t neglect this if you are the participant! Follow ups can be done on a regular and ongoing basis if need be. Professional development in whatever form it takes; can help attract and retain good people; even a seminar that you rate poorly helps benchmark your knowledge, and stretches your brain. It shouldn’t be a case of ‘why bother’? It is in your best interests and your organisation’s best interests to make it a case of “where do I sign up!”

In 1992 I attended the University of Western Sydney and in 1995 I completed a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Illustration. The reason I chose UWS was simply to study under Tony Oliver, or ‘Birdman’ as he was affectionately called. He was an illustration guru and I wanted his life! He would go out bush to study, sketch and paint the birds for the Australian Geographic calendars. I was honored when he awarded me the prize for ‘Best Graduating Illustrator’.While down south I lived in the gorgeous Blue Mountains. One magical home was in Wollemi National Park called ‘Itchenstoke’ at Mount Tootie. It was a secluded 1100acre property on top of the mountains with panoramic views.Back in the NT I now live on a beautiful rural block called “Birdhouse” which backs on to a billabong. There is a wonderful array of wildlife around to inspire me. I am completely in awe of the earth and the creatures we share it with. In all of my art I endeavor to encourage and promote the conservation of nature, the protection of wildlife and the preservation of our historic buildings. In 2010 I held an exhibition at the National Trust’s Burnett House titled “No place like home.’ It featured as an event in The Darwin Festival. Inspired by the venue I repeated the exhibition in 2011 and called it “Art in the House.” I am Marnie Jay.

Anne and Framed Gallery After 27 years in the business, Anne Phelan will soon be retiring and handing over the management of Framed – the Darwin Gallery to Judy Yates. From a small gallery and picture framing business, Anne has built the largest commercial gallery in the North of Australia, a gallery respected around Australia for its wide variety of quality artworks.

What brought you to Darwin?

Originally, I was teaching in Gove and it wasn’t long before I fell in love with the Territory. It was there that I started to develop an appreciation and love of Aboriginal art. I went on to teach for a number of years in Alice Springs and Darwin before I opted for a change of career and set up a small gallery and picture framing business on the Stuart Highway. My business partner soon walked out telling me I would be bankrupt before the end of the month. So I was left to manage by myself – and I guess the rest is history.

What would you consider to be the highlights of your time at the gallery?

There have been so many happy times and wonderful exhibitions but some certainly stand out in my memory. In 1994, I had a joint exhibition with the Savill Galleries in Sydney called 100 years of Australian Art, when people in Darwin had the opportunity to purchase works by Sir Arthur Streeton, Arthur Boyd, Brett Whitely, Rupert Bunny, Sir Russell Drysdale and many more. It was an exciting time in Darwin. More recently there was an exhibition of some of the etchings by the singer John Lennon. And of course we are proud that Geoff Todd regularly exhibits with us. I have also enjoyed working with the artists. People said that I would need patience to deal with their egos but that has not been the case. They have, without exception, been delightful to deal with and they have taught me a great deal.

Do you have any regrets?

There were a few occasions when my naivety caused problems. I’ve always trusted people and find it hard to believe that people would be dishonest. This has sometimes resulted in extensive thievery and it has been very upsetting. I also regret not being able to attract more people to the gallery which has been disappointing. People have misconceptions about our work but are usually delighted once they come in. Only one of the many facets of the gallery seems to register so they expect only art, or only craft or framing. We are of course all of these things.

Has the global financial crisis made it difficult for you? Yes, there are many challenges at the present time. Recent changes to tax and super requirements have removed many of the incentives for people to invest in artwork. Also many people come to look around and then contact the artist directly via the internet in the hope of cutting out the middle man. That is sad in my view. If people want galleries to exist, fairness must prevail.

And what does the future hold for you?

Zoe Marcham

Well, John and I are planning to spend more time travelling. Our first trip is to visit some of the Christmas fairs in Germany. When I return I will probably help out on a part-time basis. The gallery will be a little smaller and the framing section will be incorporated into the main gallery section but we plan to be here for many more years, providing enjoyment and a service to the wonderful people of the Territory.

Did you know there are almost 280,000 Australians currently living with dementia and over a million Australians caring for someone with this debilitating and cruel illness? One person is diagnosed every 6 minutes. These statistics are simply staggering to contemplate, so it seems timely that someone should write a piece of theatre tackling this issue. Playwright Kate Wyvill, known for her insightful, witty and often darkly humorous take on family relationships, has approached the subject head on. As a starting point ‘Marbles’ is about a once hardcore patriarch who is diagnosed with dementia. This play however, is not merely an account of his journey, but focuses mainly on three sisters and how they deal unsuccessfully, with their ‘new’ father and their deteriorating relationship with each other. So why write a play about such an emotive subject? Kate’s father died from Alzheimer’s two years ago after a 6 year battle with the disease that left him a shell and ultimately took his life. A Cambridge Scholar who embraced life to the fullest, he once asked her “What’s this thing I’ve got?” So angry by the way he, and the family, were robbed of the man he once was, Kate decided to write the play to tell everyone what happens and how it impacts on every life it touches. ‘Marbles’ tackles the themes of dementia, family

rivalries and voluntary euthanasia and is at its core, gut wrenchingly funny whilst being extremely thought provoking. Kate hopes to create an opening for discussion with friends and family about this illness, even as she is entertaining her audience. Darwin’s most experienced actors led by Tom Pauling as the father Stanley, will grace the stage to bring this play to life. Tessa Pauling, Tom’s wife, will play Stanley’s ex wife Monica whilst the three daughters, are played by highly respected actors Mary Anne Butler, Gail Evans and Nicky Fearn. The world premiere of Marbles has a three week season at Brown’s Mart this month and is must see theatre. To celebrate the premiere Kate is giving away 2 double tickets for Saturday the 17th of November. Please go to our Facebook page to go in the running for these. You will find all the information there. www.facebook.com/DarwinLifeMagazine

Warning! ‘The Life’ is habit forming

Richard Fitzgerald General Manager Darwin Entertainment Centre

I read my first copy of DarwinLife in 2009. I was regularly travelling to Darwin on business and as a matter of course, just after checking in, I would hunt down a copy to see what was going on. Last year when I was brought to Darwin to discuss the possibility of running the Entertainment Centre, I thought there was no reason to break an old habit, so first thing, I checked ‘The Life’. It had come a long way since my first encounter and was invaluable… hey I got the job! It was then I decided a crucial first step would be to partner with DarwinLife to help restore the Centre to being an important part of life in Darwin. In the last year we increased ticket sales and part of that success has come through telling readers about almost 200 days of shows including Marina Prior, The Melbourne Ballet, Wil Anderson and Henry Rollins to name a few.

36

November 2012 | DarwinLife Magazine

Readers of the magazine see smart articles, glossy photos and a dynamic website but what you don’t see is the people behind the scenes… the people who make it all happen. Me and my team get to work with them and let me tell you they are really switched on. They are keen to get in and get the job done the best way possible- frankly there’s no ‘fart-arsing’ around. So The Centre wishes DarwinLife Happy Birthday, and says thanks for the partnership which will continue next year…no point breaking a habit that works!

Hello DarwinLife Readers and welcome to your monthly performing arts column. I have recently been working hard directing Darwin Theatre Company’s major production ‘The Cripple of Inishmaan’. We have a cast of 13 actors, steadfastly rehearsing this black comedy and brushing up their Irish accents. It is wonderful to see this cast of everyday people; Marketers, Bankers and Teachers etc, throwing themselves into Irish Culture for preparation. In fact, that’s one of the most magical parts of the theatre, the camaraderie. This month I want to focus on one of our lead actors; James Pile. James is sharing the title role of Cripple Billy and in his other life works in hospitality. James is often running between his work, rehearsals and footy practice, yet somehow makes it all fit in. James hasn’t had a lot of experience acting, but with his charismatic, raw approach and great comic timing, has been consistently impressive throughout. He has also had to adjust to a lot of odd requests. 38

This week we made James pose for the publicity photo shoot by jumping into a pool in various stages of costume! This is certainly one of the more obscure requests I have made of an actor, but as you can see from the photo, it was worth it! By the time you read this the show will be in performance at Browns Mart Theatre until November 3rd. James will also have had time to dry off and have lived down the taunts of his mates! Until next time…

THE

Territory Craft

Christmas Craft Market is on! It’s November – everything’s starting to wind down. It’s hot, you’re frustrated, losing your cool. Christmas is looming, with all those problematic presents for those who have everything. Honestly, what a lousy time of year. What you need is a day out, relaxing in an environment green and cool, overlooking the sparkling blue of the beautiful Darwin Harbour, perhaps buying yourself a treat and solving your Christmas dilemmas at the same time. The Territory Craft Christmas Craft Market, Darwin’s favourite handcrafts market, is on the horizon for a much-needed November chill out.

Featuring over fifty stalls of authentic and original handmade work, The Christmas Craft Market is one of the most eagerly anticipated market events for the year.

It’s a great opportunity to buy affordable artwork from established Darwin artisans, with a huge range of stalls offering jewellery, fabrics, candles, ceramics, glass works, mosaics, clothes, soaps, paintings, photography, sculptures and prints. Set in the relaxing grounds around the tactileARTS building, the market is a great family outing or opportunity to get together with friends, chat with the stallholders, and get inspired to do something creative. There’s the popular sausage sizzle, cold drinks, coffee and a delicious range of cakes available, and there will be entertainment as well. So take advantage of the chance to spend a relaxing day in an inspiring and enticing environment, and solve all your Christmas shopping headaches at the same time.

Who says November’s lousy?

GET

AMONGST IT We went off to “get amongst it” at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory expecting a leisurely stroll through the galleries to check out the exhibitions. It seemed Ana the Public Relations Officer had other ideas for us. She and Ilka the Senior Collections Manager started our tour with the most stunning displays of artwork and local pieces on show to the public, and then the real adventure began. We were whisked away “behind the scenes”. We were taken along corridors and behind security doors to storage areas and huge rooms filled with artworks, artifacts and fauna. For the next two hours we marvelled at an incredible collection of artworks held in climate-controlled rooms, an unbelievable indigenous collection - some of which we were prohibited to view due to cultural reasons - and every type of animal and insect imaginable. 40

November 2012 | DarwinLife Magazine

We met the scientists who collect, curate, record and care for this massive collection. They happily showed us their work. We held stuffed animals, bones from a 120 million year old goose and snakes in jars. We ogled sharks in vats, butterflies pinned to boards and massive crocodile skulls once belonging to a 5 ½ metre beast. After two hours of wide-eyed wonder, we wandered back into the public area to finish the tour. We went through the permanent and impressive Indigenous exhibition, took in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, loved the Off The Rack exhibition. The animals, sea life and birds were displayed proudly with Sweetheart our giant croc, still holding pride of place. One thing we quickly realised is the museum is not only about exhibitions for the public. It is an important institution for collections, recordings, research and education. We found out so much about what they do and how significant their work is to the Northern Territory. As we walked out the door we laughed at the thought that one minute we were in Cyclone Tracy and the next we were holding 12 million year old poo from an animal whose name we couldn’t pronounce. Going behind the scenes was an amazing experience and one we will never forget. We want to thank Ana, Ilka, Gavin, Michael and Regis who took our photos at very short notice! Watch out for more information on the Museum in the coming months…

HOLY

Mackerel Rob Fish | Chairman | Northern Territory Seafood Council

Congratulations! You know what it is like to enjoy fresh, delicious, responsibly sourced seafood with a clear conscious. It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it? 44

November 2012 | DarwinLife Magazine

Imagine we had our very own local hero in a species of fish high in omega 3 fatty acids with proven health benefits and tasting fantastic to boot. Well we have and it’s Mackerel! There is no doubt that such a great tasting fish with proven health benefits should be in far higher demand. This is even truer when you consider this fish is ideal for the BBQ boofhead like myself. Mackerel cannot be mistaken at the fish retailers; their streamlined shapes are smooth and bullet like with their distinctive silvery skin and firm flesh. Best of all is its great taste - it could easily be the taste of the top end!! Mackerel lend themselves perfectly to simple preparation and also relatively inexpensive. Nothing easier than getting your fish monger to cut you a couple of 2 cm cutlets, a dash of olive oil and choice of seasoning (actually steak salt is great!!) and bang them each side on the BBQ until just cooked - perfect! For those looking for some more finesse try giving the cutlets a light season with salt and pepper, heat a little oil in the pan or

barbecue and cook for about 5 minutes each side then remove. In a pan add some garlic cloves, parsley, little more salt & pepper, paprika and red wine vinegar heat for about 30 seconds then poor over your cutlets. How quick and easy is that and during the Northern Territory build-up it’s just perfect. Now you’ve got the good oil, head out and get the family some mackerel cutlets for the weekend. Today, things are looking up for seafood lovers in search of “responsibly sourced” seafood. To me, responsibly sourced seafood is seafood that comes from a well-managed fishery; and if you have purchased your seafood from retailers or restaurants listed on the Support NT Caught website: www. supportntcaught.com.au or you have looked for the Support NT Caught logo; well yep that box is ticked. Curious about the people within the seafood industry and want to learn more? Then ‘like’ us on Facebook www.facebook.com/supportntcaught.

PULP Kitchen

DarwinLife | Food and Drink

I wandered down to Pulp Kitchen in Palmerston 9am one Tuesday morning ready for a casual conversation with Mel the Manager, only to find Mel and the staff taking orders, running food and answering the phone. The place was pumping.

I was surprised. “Is it always like this”? I asked. A resounding “yes” was the answer. Joe the owner has a happy and hardworking team of 15. Jason and Mykhaila are the main chefs who have been there since the café opened, while Shaun, a pastry chef has come onboard to look after all things sweet. The cabinet is full of tempting treats to have with your coffee – Grinder Coffee which is very high quality and delicious. Mel loves her work and has been managing the team for the past 7 months. With 6 years in the business including being an experienced barista, Mel is dedicated to the success of this food stop cum fish and chip shop. So why is Pulp Kitchen so successful? Great service and tasty food is the answer. Doors open at 8am for breakfast lunch and

dinner 7 days a week. The menu is varied with an extensive breakfast section you can order from until noon and burgers, salads, fish and chips and sides on offer until 9pm. It can be crazy busy every day of the week with people popping in for breakfast, tradies needing their smoko hit and phone orders coming in all day for people on the run. It’s not just take-away. You can sit down with friends and relax over your meal or have a coffee and read the paper in this great location. This month Pulp Kitchen celebrates its first birthday and by what I have witnessed, Joe and his team have every reason to party. Check out Pulp Kitchen at the Shell Service Station Complex on University Avenue in Fairway Waters. 8931 0300

DARWIN FOODIES and Elegant Irish Food This month we visited the recently renovated Dolly O’Reilly’s in Leanyer. Inside is a swanky modern interior with groovy decor and lighting at the bar. One side has leather couches and plenty of space to hang about whilst the dining area is on other side with a dozen or so tables. Splitting the two is the bar area. You could be forgiven for thinking you had walked into a posh bar in the city, but no, you’re in Leanyer. Despite the chic appearance however, the new Dolly O’Reilly’s seems to be a fairly relaxed place with both young and old present. The mains arrived about 15 minutes after ordering which was surprisingly quick given the amount of diners present. The presentation is fantastic with all the elements plated precisely and thoughtfully. The charred lime and the two blanched pieces of carrot certainly did not go unnoticed by my appreciative eagle eyes. The lamb hot pot was tender with

delicious red wine gravy. The shape of the elongated pastry was quirky, but actually made it really easy to dunk and eat. This is classic Irish comfort food with a wonderful modern twist.Next up was Atlantic salmon bake with maple syrup, soy and lime glaze – a beautiful combination of flavours and a fantastic fusion of Eastern and Western cuisines. It looked and tasted fantastic. If you feel like eating somewhere nice that doesn’t require you to go all the way to the city, Dolly O’Reilly’s might just be the thing for you – you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

SEAFOOD I love seafood. It’s as simple as that. Our oceans provide us with such an abundance of goodness, that’s it difficult not to wax lyrical about it. Just picture gorgeous tiger prawns simmering in a pan of cinnamon rich flavoured tomato sauce with crumbled feta strewn on top, or fresh sardines thrown on a hotplate with chunky rock salt, grilled to perfection. Pan seared squid with roasted fennel seeds, chill flakes and fresh mint dressed with lime juice or fresh Jewfish grilled and topped with crispy caper and dill butter. I could go on and on, and on, and on… Seafood rocks! You can eat it raw, ‘cook’ it in lime juice or vinegar, dip it in batter and deep fry it, pan fry it in butter, poach it, steam it, roast it. Seafood is so versatile and the possibilities are endless. Not only that, it’s really good for you. What’s not to love? So get down the fish shop, buy some local seafood and have your own love fest. What could be better than another shrimp on the Barbie?

SOMETHING TO SHARE AT MONSOONS

BUTTER CHICKEN

Monsoons has a very popular pub menu and has now added to it with delicious sharing plates.

Traditionally from the northern Punjab region of India, Butter Chicken is a delicious dish to tempt your tastebuds and is made to perfection at Garam Masala.

48

Pictured here is baked haloumi – a firm favourite and normally served with char grilled flatbread, grilled Spanish chorizo, mixed olives with feta and tasty spicy meatballs in a rich tomato sauce. Warm ciabatta bread served with balsamic vinegar and olive oil goes great with these. You can also enjoy amazing mushroom and bacon risotto balls and a pumpkin and goats cheese frittata to die for. A bucket of prawns served with bread and aioli is also on the menu. Get down to Monsoons and order up as little or as much as your like. Add a chilled glass of wine or a beer and you have the perfect afternoon for you and your friends. Kick back, relax and enjoy the hospitality and food that makes Monsoons the go to place on Mitchell Street.

Marinated in fresh garlic, ginger, secret Indian spices and yoghurt then cooked with tomato paste, butter and a beautiful Indian herb called Methi, Butter Chicken is mild and a little sweet. Perfect for those who don’t enjoy really hot and spicy food. This dish is famous throughout India and is becoming increasingly so in Australia. With our love of choosing a few dishes to share, Butter Chicken is ideal as part of the selection. Sprinkled with almond flakes and served with steamed rice, Butter Chicken is a must when you visit this wonderful restaurant in the heart of Mitchell Street.

PHIL

Gameson This month we are shining the light on Head Chef Phil Gameson and his kitchen at the Trailer Boat Club. A local, Phil left town to study and train under some great European chefs, honing his cooking skills and working around the world. Back in Darwin and wanting to share these skills, Phil eventually found himself at the Darwin Trailer Boat Club. Both he and the diners are very happy he did. There is a strong emphasis on seafood, which seems appropriate given the location of the restaurant. It is an important part of the menu and is sourced locally as much as possible. Serving local produce is important and Phil is an advocate for doing this. The menu reflects the bistro style of the restaurant – simple food done well and food that Darwin people want to eat. It is also well priced and offers a great mix of seafood, pizzas, salad, meats and desserts. Specials every week and gluten free and vegetarian options makes this menu a diverse and popular one, showcasing good quality food at affordable prices. With 16 staff working the kitchen seven days a week for lunch and dinner, Phil runs a tight ship making sure great meals go out perfectly and on time. With a dedicated team, a fantastic menu and a passionate Chef, The Darwin Trailer Boat Club has the perfect beachside bistro. Grab a drink, watch the sunset over the bay and tuck into some great food prepared by Phil and his team. Try it once and it will become your own weekly special.

SOUVLAKI GRILL AND CHILL

Alexis, the owner and manager of The Souvlaki Grill and Chill takes pride in choosing only the freshest and best quality produce for his menu. Yiros (7i $8.95 – 9i $11.95) are the specialty of Souvlaki Grill and Chill. Lamb purchased directly from a SA producer, together with chicken and pork from local producers, are cooked to perfection on a rotisserie each day. The meats are tender, moist and packed with flavour; served in warm pita bread with a choice of salads and tzatziki sauce. Great value; great taste. Vegetarian Yiros are also on the menu; the Saganaki is especially

tasty, made with grilled Greek cheese: bursting with flavour. ‘Meals for One’ ($8.95 - $13.95) are very popular; including Greek style pork chops (a generous serving of grilled pork belly strips); Greek sausages; open Yiros (lamb, pork or chicken), are all served with fresh Greek salad, chips, tzatziki and pita quarters. Fantastic value. The Hellas Burger; a new take on the traditional burger. Served in warm pita bread; the burger is packed with flavours: delicious meat patty, tomato, red onion, shredded tasty cheese with a great mustard and tzatziki sauce. Fresh, tasty and satisfying. The Souvlaki Grill and Chill also offers a variety of Greek cakes: Baklava ($3.50), Katafi ($3.50) and Greek Vanilla Slice ($4.50), together with a variety of Lo Castro ice-creams. Alexis has introduced a ‘loyalty program’: after purchasing 9 Yiros; get one 7i Yiros free. Salads and tzatziki sauce are homemade each day; customers are guaranteed fresh and great value meals.

A CUT ABOVE

IN ALL WAYS BY JACK STEPHANE

This menu is exciting modern cuisine together with new twists on traditional favourites. This is a reflection of the passion of owner/ manager Ron Choong, a veteran of the restaurant industry for over 35 years. Ron chooses each supplier according to the quality of their produce; he demands only the best. The cocktails ($16.00) are inspiring, as they tantalise the taste buds with fantastic combinations of flavours. Tequila Breezer: muddled lemon and lime with gomme syrup and chilli infused Cazadores Tequila and lemonade. And that’s just one of the inspiring 10 on the menu! The Betel Leaf Salmon ($18.50). Ocean Fresh has set a new benchmark in Darwin with this dish. This delicacy is the most explosive and exciting combination I have ever tasted. The Thai inspired dish combines the freshest salmon and peanut satay, cradled in a betel leaf. The flavour burst is unimaginable. Boston Bay Mussel Mariniere ($21.50). Again, sheer delight. Fresh Boston Bay mussels poached in white wine, garlic, onion, shallot and thyme; served with crispy bread, to ensure that you soak up the heavenly sauce. Moreton Bay Bug Bai Grapow ($48.00) These are the best bugs I have tasted. Wok tossed in a Thai inspired sauce with fresh basil, garlic chilli and nam pla; together with locally sourced snake beans and served with white rice. Amazing! Barramundi Meuniere ($32.00). A simple, yet elegant course of wild salt water barra, pan fried skin on and drizzled in a scrumptious lemon, white wine butter sauce; together with fresh asparagus spears. We just had to sample dessert and again we were not disappointed. Kaffir Lime Crème Brulee ($16.50) Always a favourite and Ron’s brulee was a winner. Vanilla Pannacotta With Strawberry Salad ($16.50) A delicate vanilla bean pannacotta, topped with gold leaf and served with strawberry salad and strawberry syrup was the perfect way to complete a sensational dining experience. Congratulations to Ron, his staff and chefs; This is our first 5 star award. 54

DINING EXCELLENCE

Celebrated at Gold Plate Awards

The highly anticipated 2012 AHA (NT) harbottle onpremise Gold Plate Awards were presented at a gala dinner on 15 October, at the Holiday Inn Esplanade Darwin. There were many highlights during the night, but none as significant as the naming of the ‘Restaurant of the Year’, which went to EVOO Restaurant at SKYCITY Darwin for achieving the highest overall score from the Gold Plate judges. “Last night’s AHA (NT) harbottle on-premise Gold Plate Awards were a celebration of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes and the outstanding achievements of Territory dining establishments, said Ms. Amy Williamson, Chief Executive Officer of the AHA (NT). “I would especially like to congratulate the 2012 ‘Restaurant of the Year’, EVOO Restaurant at SKYCITY, which underwent renovations last year

in order to continue to provide a fine dining service in a contemporary environment, keeping up with trends of restaurants located in other capital cities.” “I also applaud the many regional venues who won a Gold Plate this year, with 6 of the 15 Gold Plates going to dining establishments outside of Darwin. It is fantastic to see these venues providing their customers with high quality dining experiences, despite the additional difficulty of their remoteness,” Ms. Williamson said. A Gold Plate symbolises that a dining establishment has achieved excellence in customer service and food. Gold Plate judges scrutinize every aspect of their dining experience, with food weighed the most heavily. Over 280 people involved in hospitality industry attended the Awards night including dignitaries, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Hon. Terry Mills, Minister for Business, Hon. Peter Chandler, and Minister for Primary Industry and Fisheries, Hon. Willem Westra van Holthe. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Amy Davis from Channel Nine.

CHRISTMAS

IN DARWIN

Yes, it’s that time of year. You’ve been given the task of organising your Christmas party and you have no idea where to go, so this month we have put together some ideas for you. From catering businesses to karaoke fun, from pubs to restaurants, from hotels to clubs, there is a place that’s just right for you and your party. Now all you have to do is decide. Bring on the Festive Season!

THAILICIOUS Take a walk down Mitchell Street and you will find restaurants and eating houses everywhere. Which one to choose? Well, if you are interested in delicious Thai food then you can’t go past Thailicious. Walk up the stairs and you’re greeted by a smiling waiter ready to take you to your table, guide you through the menu and organise your drinks. The only open-air rooftop restaurant on the strip, customers have a choice of sitting at the usual tables and chairs or lounging on the floor with cushions scattered around low tables. It’s all very comfortable and relaxed. Now for the food. The menu is traditional Thai prepared by Thai chefs who know their stuff. Only grain fed beef, quality chicken and wild caught barramundi is used and no shortcuts are taken in creating the dishes - everything is cooked to order. This means it takes time; something some customers find hard to understand. To the Thailicious team cooking food from scratch every time is an important part of the Thailicious experience. This is a guarantee to the diner that the food is fresh. So take it easy, unwind and enjoy your drink, knowing the wait will be worth it. Owners, mother and son team Madhu and Romal, are friendly, happy people dedicated to customer service and quality food. They want you to enjoy your experience every time you visit. That’s their goal and every night. So, climb the stairs and savour the tastes of Thailand. November 2012 | DarwinLife Magazine

A NEW SCHOONERS SAILS INTO THE BAY

Last month Schooners changed hands and there are changes in the wind. Gone are the sea-faring mural and the outdoor tables, all replaced by comfortable lounges, great lighting and a painted wall waiting for the perfect artwork. Tony the new owner and his management team, have two things on their minds – comfort and quality. When asked why he bought the restaurant, Tony replied that he wanted a place that everybody wanted to come to, where they could get a cold beer some decent food but most importantly where folks can relax and unwind after a hard day. “We are trying to make Schooners the middle ground. The men can hang out at the bar and the women can sit in comfortable lounges outside and enjoy a cocktail if they want to. They can then get together and enjoy a good meal. That’s what we’re all about.” There are only 15 tables at Schooners, something Tony and his team intend on keeping. For the Schooners crew it’s all about quality at a reasonable price. While some of the old favourites have stayed, the new menu has some new 60

and interesting additions. Croc lemongrass skewers with satay sauce sit along side buffalo bangers and mash, kangaroo fillets and oven baked wild caught barramundi, as a way to appeal to locals and visitors alike. What is important here, is that the produce is fresh and local, or at least Australian. Tony and his team endeavour to use only Australian produce whenever possible. As the mural disappears and the restaurant is given a bit of a facelift, one thing is for certain, Schooners will remain a much loved drinking hole and eating house for years to come.

Christmas PEE WEE’S AND THE BUS

Over the past few months DarwinLife has been shining a big spotlight on Pee Wee’s at the Point. We have written about the food, the fantastic chef, we’ve done a Get Amongst It there and we’ve even discussed past reviews. So you may be asking yourself what more is there to write about. Well, there is something and it’s a great service set up for the busy festive season – a Shuttle Bus service. Transport is always an issue when you are organising a Christmas party, especially when you are not right in town amongst it all. No need to worry this year. Not only will you get to experience the first-rate hospitality, food and service that is Pee Wee’s, if there are 20 or more of you, the shuttle to the city is thrown in. Free. Perfect for your Christmas celebration. Speaking of Christmas, the team at Pee Wee’s is gearing up for a busy time and festive cheer. As with every year, the

restaurant has created some wonderful food and drink packages to whet your appetite. Whatever the size or style of party you are looking for, Pee Wee’s has got it covered. So now you don’t have to think about where you are going, you just have to decide what to eat and drink. Pee Wee’s will do the rest. Get yourself there, indulge in some amazing food, take in the breathtaking views and raise your glass to the festive season in style. When it’s all over just board the bus and it will whisk you off into the city. Nice. That’s one less thing to worry about!

ST MARY’S FOOTBALL CLUB

AND CHRISTMAS St Mary’s Football Club is an institution in Darwin with a long history, some great wins and some very famous players.

Jason Cotter is the new General Manager and Coach of the St Mary’s Football Club. Fresh from The Gold Coast and the Southport Sharks, Jason is ready to take on Darwin footy and get more people into the club as members and as people wanting to use the space for functions. The functions room is huge and can fit up to 380 people. It has been used for weddings – see the amazing transformation photo – dance parties one of which was held last month - and of course work or social gatherings. There is also a great outside undercover area for casual BBQs or cocktail parties, a swimming pool and kids play area. St Mary’s Football Club has it all.

GRiNNERS

I dropped in to see Helen at her catering company Grinners the other day. From the moment I walked into the office the phone did not stop ringing. We had our conversation continuously interrupted by clients, staff and potential customers. I didn’t mind, it meant that she and her staff are busy. In a very competitive industry it is heartening to see that Grinners continues to do well. Helen has had Grinners since 2004 and has built the business into the success it is today. With new customers weekly and regular clients such as PowerWater, ConocoPhillips and Quest Palmerston. Grinners continues

CHARCOAL

OVEN

AND THE FESTIVE SEASON

A Christmas function down at this Cullen Bay restaurant is a party with a difference. There aren’t many restaurants with a dedicated Karaoke lounge in town these days, but you’ll find one here at Charcoal Oven. A hidden gem at the ferry terminal end of Cullen Bay, Charcoal Oven is away from the hustle and bustle. Cathy the owner and host will warm your heart with her vibrant personality. All she wants is for you to feel comfortable and have a good time drinking, eating and ultimately dancing and singing the night away. She also offers competitive discounts on beer and wine for two hours in the early evening. (4pm to 6pm) so you and your colleagues can unwind after a long workday. We caught up one Friday afternoon and after putting some pretty sizable live mudcrabs in water, we sat out on the deck discuss the restaurant. With another perfect Darwin sunset and the rich gravelly voice of Alan, a Maori/Australian singing acoustic blues in the background, (apparently he’s there on weekends until 10pm) we were going nowhere. The new menu comes with some dishes courtesy of a very experienced chef, well known for his fantastic food. Tim was the Head Chef of a popular restaurant in Mitchell Street, for nearly six years and has now joined forces with Cathy to bring his skill and talent to the restaurant. The menu here has always been a combination of European and Asian this will not change. The difference now, will be what Tim brings to the kitchen – his expertise and experience. Meat, Poultry and local Seafood, share top billing here with platters laden with tempting Offerings. They look amazing and more importantly are delicious. If you don’t want anything so elaborate why not opt for an appetizer platter it’s sure to see you through. Enjoy intimate dining and some lovely wines by the water on this restaurant’s private deck. After dinner move to the Karaoke lounge and party on into the night. Open 7 Days a week 4pm - 2am.”

So, having a Facebook page and a Twitter account in business these days, is normal and let’s say expected, but having a phone app built as part of your marketing strategy, well that’s another thing altogether.

This is exactly what The Beachfront has done and this month I am checking it out… First things first – this app is all about redeeming reward points. It’s as simple as that. Invite your mates down with you to the pub using the app and you get points. Share the app with friends and you get points. Take a photo at the pub using the app and you get points. I downloaded the app and after logging in I went for a tour. Straight away I got 5 points! You can use the points for certain drinks that are listed on the app. There’s a What’s On button listing events, specials and competitions. You can invite friends, check out the menu or find your friends (or yourself) in the photo gallery. Go to the Wall and write a comment. Here’s one I read: I’m concerned the Beachfront app will make me more good looking. Need I be worried? The Beachfront app is fun and interactive and I think regulars will really get into it. Once they start sharing it with friends, it could prove to be a very, very smart marketing strategy. Let’s revisit Facebook for a minute. The Beachfront now has

over 5,000 ‘likes’ which makes it the most ‘liked’ pub in Darwin and with this app, that number should rise very quickly. The pub is also embracing free wifi, of course in a pub-like way. Buy a coke, a Jim Beam or a Canadian Club product and you get free access to the internet while you’re at the pub. The staff gives you an access code and voila you’re online. The internet and social media is now a given in our everyday lives. Businesses need to embrace this to stay competitive and seen to be up-to-date. The Beachfront Hotel has just done this in a big way …… Go to the App Store and download the app- it’s free - and starting redeeming rewards. If you do it before the end of November you could be the proud owner of an ipad thanks to The Beachfront Hotel. Next month we are talking about Christmas and the festive season, complete with your chance to win a $10,000 travel voucher and create your own adventure. Shop at the Bottle Shop and enter. It’s that easy. All of a sudden I’m feeling really thirsty…

Mineral Magic If you haven’t already tried out mineral makeup products they are a great option if you want something to use that is natural, feels light and if you have sensitive skin. Karlie Goetze Makeup Artist Beauty Therapist M 0412 649 529 karlie.goetze@hotmail.com www.karlieg.com

Mineral make-up contains natural minerals that are derived from the earth and ground to a fine dust so that they can be added to cosmetics. The main minerals being used in natural cosmetics are iron oxide, mica, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide. It was created in the 1970’s by Dianne Ranger but has become increasingly popular of late as people search for cosmetics that look and feel more natural. Mineral make-up does not contain fragrances, dyes, preservatives,

chemicals, fillers, or synthetic binders making them a fantastic natural choice if your skin gets irritated by other types of cosmetics. Best of all mineral makeup won’t clog pores so it’s a great option if you have large open pores and suffer from congested skin. You’re not limited to neutral shades with mineral makeup either, brands like INIKA and jane iredale have brilliant eye colour shades so you can still create an eye-popping effect using gentle and natural cosmetics.

Brands to try: • jane iredale • INIKA • Nude by Nature • Sheer Cover

It was an intensive three day competition with our own Savannah Smith battling against 19 other hairdressers for the chance of a GOLD medal. Finding the

right fragrance... How do I find a new fragrance that I will really enjoy?

More often than not, people have one or two distinct fragrances they most enjoy e.g. floral, oriental, woody or fresh. Perfume is a very personal choice. What suits one person may not suit another. Not only do fragrances need to reflect the personality of the wearer but they smell different on everyone as they mix with your natural oils and acids on your skin.

How do I select a fragrance as a gift for someone?

Find out which fragrances he or she especially likes, and the names of those perfumes. Once you know those names, a trained Better Health Pharmacy Assistant will be able to help you select another fragrance from the same family of fragrance that he or she especially likes. Ask the assistant to suggest three fragrances. Test their scents on testing papers. Take your time. Which fragrance ‘talks’ to you? Try not to be logical. Relax. Let your instinct take over. Nine times out of ten, you’ll find that your nose will select the perfect match!

What is the correct way to try a fragrance?

Apply a few drops or the lightest spray to your wrist or the back of your hand. Wait a few moments. Give the fragrance time to bloom on your skin, to let the notes ‘talk’ to you.

Call for

VOLUNTEERS

SMA is recruiting for Volunteer Sports First Aiders and Sports Trainers for sports in the NT. Supporting, developing and valuing volunteers is the key to retention and SMA aim to not only educate the Sports First Aiders and Trainers, they also encourage clubs and event coordinators to ‘do the right thing’, look after the volunteers and welcome them as part of the team. In the not-for-profit landscape you simply cannot do everything alone, and it takes a strong network approach to succeed. This is the approach of the team at SMA. “We are working with Volunteers NT and other community organisations, schools and sporting clubs, to tap into new groups of

Sports First Aiders and Sports Trainers”. Thanks to the Office of Youth Affairs Youth Engagement Grant, SMA will be running Sports First Aid and Sports Trainer programs in January, providing an opportunity for students aged 15-18 to participate in skills development in the area of sports injury prevention and management. Of course commitment is required, and those on the program will be allocated to sporting clubs as an opportunity to put their skills to good use, and to be mentored. Volunteering is a great way to build employability skills, make connections in the community, and have a lot of fun, and make friends in local sports clubs. And its not restricted

to youth! SMA have Seniors programs as well. All that is needed is a valid First Aid Certificate, and SMA can do the rest. If volunteers don’t have a First Aid certificate, then as a registered training organisation, SMA can also provide an affordable option with Sports First Aid (Apply first Aid HLTFA311A)

Volunteers interested in being involved in this fabulous and rewarding industry should contact SMA or check out their Website : nt.sma.org.au.

Omega-3 Are You Getting Enough? Huiru Teoh, Nutrition NT

Fat is often seen as the enemy due to its high energy content, which can play a role in increasing body weight. Some types of fat also increase the risk of developing heart disease. However, some fats are beneficial for us and should be included in our diet. Omega-3, a type of polyunsaturated fat, is an essential fatty acid that is not produced by our body. Therefore, we need to obtain it from the diet. An adequate intake of omega-3 plays an important role in promoting good health and preventing illnesses like heart disease. Omega-3 fats can be found in a variety of food, including marine, plant and animal sources. They are found in oily fish, like Atlantic and Australian salmon, mackerel, herring, canned salmon, canned sardines and some canned tuna varieties. Plant foods like walnuts, flaxseeds (linseeds), canola oil and soybean oil are good sources of Omega-3 fats.

So how much should we be aiming for? The Heart Foundation recommends that Australian adults consume about 500mg of Omega-3 fats daily (3500mg per week) to reduce the risk of heart disease. Through careful planning, these targets can be easily achieved. To consume 500mg Omega-3 per day, aim to include two to three 150g serves of oily fish every week and include fish oil supplements and Omega-3 enriched food and drinks. For example, , include a can of salmon for lunch once a week and two evening meals with oily fish per week. Fish is very versatile and can be grilled, steamed, baked and pan-fried. If you generally cook mixed dishes, you can add fish into casseroles, soups, pasta and even stir-fries. Those who do not enjoy fish may find it difficult to meet their omega-3 needs. Whilst fish and seafood are the best sources of omega-3, you can still obtain it from plant and animal sources. Choose cooking oils that are rich in Omega-3 and try to include other sources of Omega-3 in the diet, like walnuts, linseed bread and products that have been fortified with Omega-3. Supplements are also useful to meet your Omega-3 requirements and if you are a vegetarian, look for those that have been derived from algae.

Pain in the Neck? Drugs are not the answer Students all over Australia swotting for their final exams should think twice about taking drugs for neck pain. . . that’s the clear message from a landmark US study* into treatment options for neck pain. Neck pain affects three out of every four people at one stage in their lives, particularly sedentary students doing exams and office workers chained to a desk. In a recent study, research showed that for people with neck pain, chiropractic care had significantly more pain relief than medication. The research also pointed to an in-home exercise program also having greater benefits than medication. The groups were measured for pain at regular intervals over 52 weeks and the study found that “for participants with acute and subacute neck pain” chiropractic adjustment “was more effective than medication in both the short and long term”. The exercise regime was also found to be more beneficial than medication at most time points. We hope as a profession that Australians would use this study to examine their reliance on pain killers. While medication can have a place in pain management, this research shows that gentle, drug-free chiropractic care and exercises can be much more effective in relieving neck pain. There are also well documented side-effects, including gastrointestinal problems which can come from extended use of pain-killers. The CAA NT would like to warn people that in most cases neck pain is only a symptom of a neck that has lost function. Treating only the pain can mask problems beneath the surface. The CAA recommends that students and office workers should limit the amount of time they continually sit at a desk, making sure they take regular short breaks to move around and stretch their muscles. An easy three minute daily spinal health exercises for both children and adults can be downloaded from the Association’s website www.straightenupaustralia.com.au *Bronfort G, Evans R et al. ERIC Vanweydeveld Age : 31 How long have you been playing Water Polo? I have been playing for a year. I swim regularly and one day I saw a sign saying that the Water Polo Association was looking for players. I had never played before but always wanted to, so one night I went for a try and got into it. Why do you play? I love water and all sports associated with it. I originally come from a swimming background and I have been practicing a wide range of aquatic sports (surfing, skim boarding, water skiing, triathlon, ocean swimming and rescue swimming). All these sports are quite individual and I wanted to start playing a team sport for a change. Water Polo was the answer.

What can you get out of it? Fitness, fun, friendship, new skills and a good laugh when you miss the goal! People are very friendly and always welcome new players. The experienced players are very patient and they take time to teach you techniques and the basics of the game. Could you tell us a bit about the game? Two teams composed of seven players each (six field players and a goalkeeper) are allowed in the pool (25 m) during game play. All players wear colored caps which a numbered. Both goalies wear red caps. Players can be substituted during the game. The game is divided into four periods of 10 minutes each. The objective is to play collectively to score a goal.

What skills do you need to play? Swimming obviously! People don’t need to be fast swimmers but they need to be confident in water. How can people get involved? Simply by showing up on Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm at the Parap Swimming Pool. It only costs $10 per game and this covers insurance, pool hiring and purchasing new equipment (caps and balls). It’s a social game and the teams are mixed - girls and boys can compete together. It is a lot of fun and we always need players. So don’t hesitate. Come and try, we’re waiting for you!

AFL PHYSIO returns to Darwin

Very few physiotherapists have the opportunity to work with an AFL team but Josh Tidswell from Territory Sports Medicine has. After an incredible season at North Melbourne Football Club (Kangaroos), he has now returned to Darwin. Josh took up a full-time position with the Kangaroos in the AFL for season 2012 and has spent the past year working and travelling with the team, alongside one of the country’s most renowned physiotherapists, Steve Saunders. While teams such as Essendon and West Coast were devastated by injury in 2012, Josh and the medical team were able to limit the Kangaroos to only 2 soft tissue injuries for the season, and in doing help the team to their first finals appearance in 4 years. His time at the Kangaroos included a highaltitude training camp to Park City Utah, where their medical team worked closely with the US Ski Team’s sports science faculty brainstorming new ways of measuring and enhancing player performance. Josh brings back a wealth of knowledge and new ideas to Darwin having worked in a world-

Tips to buying safe, good quality skin care

THIS CHRISTMAS

1) Toiletries and cosmetic products must have an ingredient list to help you avoid known allergens. Ingredients are listed according to the percentage in the product. Those down the bottom often contain 1% or less. This is fine for strong ingredients such as essential oils; 2) If buying from a market, remember anyone can make a product and natural does not mean safe.. A reputable maker will have Product Liability Insurance to protect the consumer; 3) When buying organics remember the term “made with organic ingredients” can be used if 70% of ingredients are organic. Australian Certified Organic products contain 95% or more certified organic ingredients; 4) Don’t be fooled. All products, unless they are designed to be used in a few days, need a preservative; 5) Avoid heavy metal containing products. Lipsticks produced by even the big brands have been found to contain lead. Be cautious of Kohl containing products such as eye makeup. Kohl can be heavily contaminated with lead especially if it originates from a third-world country. 6) Products that make a therapeutic claim such as “stops itch” or “treats eczema” must be listed with the TGA. Listed or registered products will have an L or R plus a number on the label. 7) If you have a skin problem, such as acne, dermatitis or rosacea, your naturopath can investigate the internal and external causes. A trained practitioner can formulate a product specific to your needs. To look your best this Christmas, call Vivienne on 89810047. with violins and voices Bringing “music to the audience” and reaching the community, is a strong passion for two of Darwin’s prominent volunteer musical icons – the Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and the VoxCrox community choir. The benefits are transparent. Both the sense of involvement and inclusion for the volunteer musicians and singers and the delight of the appreciative attending audiences, are unique and valued by the Northern Territory. Founded in 1989, the closely-held DSO values of accessibility and community combined with the passion of the volunteer musicians has seen the community orchestra develop rapidly, exploring new sounds and exciting a wide variety of audiences along the way. The work of the DSO has resulted in some award winning and ambitious projects. VoxCrox is a non auditioned community choir that matches ‘nonprofessional’ singers with ‘professional’ singers to create a weekly event where people with a passion for singing can enjoy singing as a group. Music Director Paolo Fabris is an accomplished Italian actor, singer and vocal coach and the choir has developed rapidly under his talented and engaging direction. Recently VoxCrox combined with the DSO to collaborate on a portion of the orchestra’s spectacular presentation of “Licence to Thrill”. This free community concert featured music made famous by the James Bond films and entranced an NT audience of over 3,000 in Darwin’s Gardens Amphitheatre.

Long walks on the beach, holding hands, walking with arms around each other, an extended gaze into each other’s eyes or sharing the odd peck on the lips - Are public displays of affection (PDA) OK? I’ve analysed this and it seems to primarily depend on the environment you’re in. Earlier in the year, my husband and I travelled overseas for a few days, a quick break away from work and the demands of everyday life. The PDA behaviour did increase compared to our everyday life in Darwin, yet certainly not too intense that a passerby would suggest we ‘get a room’. I have the impression that military men are not too keen on PDA’s around their military mates and definitely not at military functions. This extended to my sweet husband ordering flowers to be delivered to my work place in response to him spending many weeks away when I was left to organise and coordinate a number of projects we are currently working on. He usually has a knack for kind words and can be very thoughtful. The advantage of showing his appreciation with flowers is that the card is often small and the kind gesticulation is relatively easy to organise.

The only possible thing that could detract from such a lovely gesture is the writing on that card. On any given day, my husband would have this covered.

But telling the florist what to write over the phone, in a room full of military men, poses some uncertainty. The flowers were absolutely beautiful, and as a result of perceived military men pressure, the card read…., “Thanks for your efforts”. I don’t think he will ever live this one down.

IBU AMYE AND WONDERFUL

CHARCOAL CHICKEN We’ve got a suburb close to the city - Stuart Park and we have 2 sit-down restaurants there. Four years ago there was ONE…The Buff Club. Well, luckily for the community of Stuart Park along came little Ms. Amye in 2008. For those of you who don’t know which restaurant I’m talking about, you obviously haven’t seen the sassy shelf advertising banners of the Indo-Timorese Charcoal Chicken house on the main highway in the heart of Stuart Park. I knew I was taking a risk when trying to kill two birds with one stone by rocking up for the sweet and spicy charcoal chicken and attempting an interview with Ms. Amye at dinner service…though my courageous decision paid off by leaving with sticky fingers, photo’s and a life story

from Amye that was inspiring. Her journey to Australia 23 years ago with her 2-year-old son and the adversity of single parenthood hasn’t dampened her spirit that only roams in happiness! Growing up in a poor family in Timor, Amye mother’s traditional cake making sales, taught Amye the economic skills of making an earning for your family. Hard work and community togetherness has kept Amye in business. Without that support she admits her business has nearly sunk a few times. The community’s love for her tender laugh and traditional cooking has seen continuous kindness from locals. Happiness creates happiness! Well I came home and was happy to see I still had sauce all over my face….what a feed and what a lovely lady!

‘Low DOWN’ on

Insurance Written by Holly Franklin

What is insurance? Insurance is transferring the risk of loss to a third party. You’re covering your assets and protecting yourself from a financial blow in the event you suffer a loss.

Are all insurance policies the same? No way! Insurance companies have very different covers. Before shopping for insurance write down what is important to you. Do you want your 1 carat engagement ring covered for its full value? Will your $15k bicycle be covered? In a total loss will your building insurance cover anything extra besides the sum insured? When you know what is important to you then you are able to make a more informed decision based on what each insurance company offers.

What’s a policy wording? Your policy wording outlines everything you are covered for as well as exclusions. It is essential you read this so you are aware of what you are covered for and what you’re not covered for.

Excess and Premiums! In the event of a claim your excess is you’re contribution to that claim. You can opt to have a higher excess to reduce the overall premium. Shop to your needs as much as you shop for the best premium and compromise to what you can live with and without in the event of a loss. There is no point paying a cheap premium for a cover that doesn’t protect your particular assets. November 2012 | DarwinLife Magazine

Like us on Facebook! Committed to providing residents with multiple opportunities, to both track Council activities and provide feedback to Council. The City of Palmerston has launched into the social media arena with the introduction of their Facebook page, not surprisingly called City of Palmerston.

Like!

With the average age of Palmerston residents in their early 30s and roughly 1/4 of the population in their early teens, it made sense to enter a medium that appealed to this demographic, targeting communications where they are most comfortable. The City also recently relaunched their website, focusing on ease-of-use when it came to navigation and adding a number of methods for residents to search for information. After all everybody has different methods of doing the same thing so it was important they had different methods by which to find information on Council’s site. The City’s Facebook page will keep residents and interested parties up to date with events, important dates to remember, roadwork’s in addition to seeking feedback. While the City’s website, will provide more comprehensive information on the City and areas of interest to the community. To find the City’s Facebook page, visit their website www.palmerston.nt.gov.au and follow the links.

DARWIN HEALTH CARE AND KINESIOLOGY Rena Walker is a Kinesiologist who has worked in Darwin for the past 8 years. A natural therapy, Kinesiology uses muscle testing to identify the imbalances in your body and then identifies the adjustments needed to bring your body back into balance. It works with the knowledge that your body intuitively knows how to heal itself; it is because of the stress of our lifestyle and environment that we lose the balance required for perfect health. Incorporating knowledge from traditional Chinese medicine, Chiropractic, nutrition and counselling, Kinesiology is amazingly efficient. The process may include holding or massaging reflex points, gentle muscle manipulation, nutritional assessment or emotional stress diffusion to access your higher intelligence. I wandered into Darwin Health Care to speak with Rena about her work and a feeling of comfort and tranquility came over me. It was instant and very surprising. There is something very calming about her and her space. When asked why she became a Kinesiologist, Rena replied she had always wanted to be a natural therapist. A professional dancer for 18 years, she needed a change and a new direction and found it in Kinesiology. Working in Coconut Grove for over 7 years, Rena moved to her new premises in the Nightcliff Shopping Village (near the library) a couple of months ago. Most of her clients come to her through referrals, however if you want to experience the healing hands of Rena, you just need to call her. She welcomes new clients. A kinesiology consultation usually takes up to 1½ hours depending on your

individual needs and you generally remain fully clothed. Rena has successfully helped numerous people achieve their health and lifestyle goals so if you are need of some balance in your life Kinesiology and Rena Walker may be your answer. Try Kinesiology. It’s natural and is a way for your body and brain talk to each other to help find the balance you need in your life I admit I took most of this information from Rena’s website because her explanation was far more succinct than mine. If you want to know more, why not check it out. www.darwinhealthcare.com.au

TOOTH WHITENING AT EXTREME DENTISTRY

This month we’re talking about tooth whitening. Let’s face it, having a bright, white smile makes us look healthy and feel confident. Sadly sometimes over time for a number of reasons, our teeth lose that white bright look. Thankfully there is a solution to this – Tooth Whitening - and Dr Anand at Extreme Dentistry is the person to do it.

The procedure is a simple one. The first treatment in the surgery, takes an hour and a high strength concentrated gel with an LED light to activate the bleaching, is used on your teeth. This is to kick start the process and ready you for 2 – 3 weeks (depending on your teeth) of home treatments. Once at home an easy to apply gel is used on your teeth. You need to do this every evening for 30 – 40 minutes. That’s it. At the end of 3 weeks you will see a marked improvement. Extreme Dentistry is serious about your teeth and ensuring you are given the best care. With that in mind, the first appointment is a consultation to chat with you about your dental and medical history to make sure you are a good candidate for the treatment. This consultation helps Dr Anand to diagnose the cause of your tooth discolouration and to decide on the appropriate bleaching agents to use. There are some cases where teeth whitening is not the way to go and it is at this consultation that Dr Anand finds this out and may suggest an alternative. Contact Dr Anand at Extreme Dentistry for your next step to the bright white smile you have always wanted.

TOUR DE TIMOR

PEACE BEGINS

WITH ME

In early September Jason Finlay participated in his 3rd Tour De Timor, a gruelling mountain bike stage race through the mountains of Timor Leste.

A significant group of Darwin riders and volunteers signed up for the 2012 Tour de Timor. Billed as the hardest stage race in South East Asia it is six days and six hundred kilometres. The race attracted people from 18 different countries at all levels from elite mountain bikers fighting it out for the prize money, through to recreational cyclists who want to explore parts of Timor Leste.

The motto for the race is “peace begins with me” and with the course taking us through West Timor (Indonesia) to Oekussi (Timor Leste) it brought both countries together. Listening to the official speeches at the border crossing it reminded us of the significance of this years event and the vision of race organisers in spreading the message of peace. One of the great things about the Tour de Timor is everyone takes home an experience that they will never forget.

The course is demanding but the support from the local Timorese is fantastic. Children and families line the roads throughout the towns and villages to encourage riders along. At the campsites each night there were cultural performances and one of the highlights was the opportunity to have dinner at one of the local orphanages.

The racing up the front end of the field was very close and after 600km and 20 hours of racing there were only a few minutes separating the top riders. There were some great performances from our local riders with Chris Hanson storming home for a 2nd place in Stage 2 before falling victim to a mystery illness. Rowena Eastick was 2nd overall in the 40+ women and Andrew Goldsworthy 4th in the 40+ mens. Jenny Anderson toughed it out for a win in the 50+ women. The Mens team results saw team “Darwin Mob” take 2nd place and team “Lost Puppies” sneak home for equal 3rd. Further back in the field there were some great efforts by Darwin’s recreational riders. Many such as James Tierney, Stephen Southwood and Jon Tippet rode between seven to twelve hours every day but still managed to finish with a smile. The great results show that people of all ages and abilities can take up mountain biking in Darwin. You are never too old or young to start riding and there are plenty of social rides with Darwin Off Road Cyclists to get you started. If you aren’t into cycling then consider volunteering in 2013. It’s a great way to see and experience Timor Leste.

CAR REVIEW

VOLKSWAGEN

UP

By Christina Brown

When I was asked to review the latest offering from the Volkswagen stable, I wondered why anyone would call a car UP. To be honest I’m still wondering. Luckily this hasn’t impacted on my impression of the ride I’ve just had. And what a cool ride it was. Pitched at the younger market, Up certainly delivers. It’s quick, zippy and easy to park. All the things you need when you are getting around town. Not only that, it’s a really comfortable drive. This is a small car perfect for city living, yet surprisingly spacious inside. It has

a radio, CD player and connectivity for your iPod as standard and for a little extra you can have a GPS with Bluetooth so you can access your music and have a hands-free conversation with your mobile phone. Essential. So why buy this little car over another one in it’s class? Well, for starters Up is the first small car with a full 5 star ANCAAP rating and has also been named the World Car of the Year for 2012. Pretty impressive. Not only that, this is quality German engineering which in itself is a selling point. To top all of this off, the price for this state-of-the-art world beating vehicle is totally surprising: 3 door starts at $16,999 drive away and the 5 door a competitive $17,999. Why not take this little baby for a test drive; you have nothing to lose. November 2012 | DarwinLife Magazine 107

November is here. Year 12 students have been doing exams and some have finished and are on the roads driving, walking or on push bikes so keep an eye out for them. Christmas parties are starting to happen so make sure you organise a sober bob, bus, taxi or some one to pick you up. Keep a vigilant eye on the roads during light rains and heavy storms. Don’t forget when driving along double lane roads, if you are not overtaking stay in the left lane and allow merging traffic in, and our emergency vehicles to pass quickly without having to weave in and out, as it maybe your loved ones that they are rushing too. atmosphere of the bush. After a night or two at Black Point it’s off to one of the many beautiful anchorages in the harbour itself which stretches over 15 miles southwards. For the rest of the visit its fishing, a walk around the ruins of Victoria or along an isolated beach (definitely do not swim), or just simply chilling out. Garig Gunak Barlu National Park is also accessible by road (four wheel drive) and air, so you don’t have to be a sailor to enjoy this amazing environment. Permits and fees apply, so check out the official website.

Dreaming It’s November and time to think of exotic destinations, getting away from it all and relaxing after another big year. Maybe you just want to get out of town for a few days and need some inspiration. Whatever your desire, Holiday Dreaming is here.

LITCHFIELD, OUR PARK OF PLENTY! Just over an hours’ drive from Darwin is Batchelor township and Litchfield National Park, where you will discover a myriad of diverse environments including rugged sandstone escarpments, perennial spring-fed streams, monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls and a wealth of history. Litchfield covers a mighty 1500sq km so to really experience the true beauty of this region it’s best to stay at least two days. Batchelor, ‘the gateway to Litchfield National Park’ provides the perfect base for your explorations. A gorgeous little town with its elevated houses and beautifully maintained gardens, Batchelor offers a range of accommodation with motel facilities at the Batchelor Resort, bungalow accommodation at Rum Jungle Bungalows and the nearby Batchelor Butterfly Farm. Be sure to immerse yourself in the beautiful world of butterflies at the Butterfly Farm and visit the newly opened Batchelor Township Museum, an interpretive exploration of the significant indigenous, farming, mining and World War II history of the area. Enroute to Litchfield National Park, cabin, caravan and camping facilities can be found at Pandanus on Litchfield, Banyan Tree Caravan Park and Litchfield

Tourist Park, while just 4km from Wangi Falls, Litchfield Safari Camp provides safaristyle accommodation. With the tourist season coming to a close, now is the best time for locals to take advantage of the camping facilities at Wangi Falls, Buley Rockhole, Florence Falls, and Walker Creek. Before the monsoon sets in, 4WD camping is still accessible at Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek) and Surprise Creek Falls. Once in Litchfield National Park, visit the popular swimming spots scattered throughout the Park such as Wangi Falls, Florence Falls, Tjaynera Falls, Cascades and Buley Rockhole. Heavy rains occurring during the wet season can render some of these areas unsafe so be sure to take heed of warnings and give our Consultants a call to be sure of accessibility. Scenic walks, varying from short strolls to 1-3km walks, leave from most of the popular visitor sites. Signs in the car parks and located along the walking tracks will guide you along the way. Don’t miss the fascinating sights of the two metre high Magnetic Termite Mounds, the dramatically plunging Tolmer Falls and the ruins of the old Bamboo Creek Tin Mine. If you have a 4WD vehicle, venture to the Blyth Homestead built in 1929 and abandoned in the early 1960s, and the mysterious Lost City.

Ho Chi Minh City The bikes, the bikes! Doubling on a Vietnamese motorbike takes a little skill, but is one of the richest experiences on offer in all of Indochina. Watch locals as they weave, duck and zip past each other on motorbikes, crammed with chickens, goods or an entire family on board. A cornerstone of any Vietnamese experience is the fresh, light, deliciously simple local food. From rice paper rolls stuffed with shrimp and pork to the staple known as ‘pho’ noodle broth great for lunch on the run, the Vietnamese cooking focuses on fresh, leafy vegetables, seafood straight from the sea and stock expertly made over a period of days. Saigon has cheap noodle bars on every corner, as well as more traditional restaurants and some fantastic nightlife. One of the most splendid bars in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City is called Saigon, Saigon, which is situated nine stories up in the opulent Caravelle Hotel. From the balcony,

you can enjoy panoramic views across the city. Those with a passion for history can visit the infamous War Remnants Museum, where history comes alive. With exceptionally graphic images and displays from both battlefields, as well as documented evidence of the after-effects of Agent Orange, this is a place that portrays the reality of war in all its vile destructiveness. Despite so many centuries of conflict, against countries as diverse as America, China, France and Cambodia, Vietnam does not feel like a hostile or bitter country. In fact, there seems to be a strong sense of optimism about the place. The city is also reaping the rewards of an emerging tourism market, which draws in large part from former occupiers and enemy nations, including New Zealand. Flight Centre’s travel specialists have a wealth of knowledge and can offer advice, based on their very own travel experiences, so speak to an expert at your nearest store about a Vietnam holiday to suit you. Wet Season By Warwick Brown

As the dry season draws to a close our Wet Season is only just beginning to flourish. The once brown and barren landscape swiftly kicks into gear with luscious greens and well-nourished floodplains dominating the region. New life blooms as waters begin to rise with the first rains soaking through the waterless wilderness.

The once dormant waterfalls awaken and surge with fury as they spill over streaming down in raging effervescence. Local wildlife comes alive and crackling thunderstorms swarm the fields overhead. The Top End Wet Season runs from October through to April and is a spectacular time of year. Kakadu National Park is home to over a third of Australia’s bird species, with at least sixty species found in these wetlands. Crocodiles can been spotted either basking on the banks or cooling off in the billabongs lurking herds of buffalo cautiously lapping at the water’s edge. The South Alligator River is locally known as Jim Jim Creek and consists of a myriad of river channels, floodplains and backwater swamps. One of the best ways to see Kakadu over the Wet is by air. Soaring over the vast expanse of ever-changing landscape, perspective is realised. Boundaries become non-existent and fulfillment is found. Kakadu Scenic flights run all year round and are a definite must experience this wet season for both locals and tourists alike.

Thermal performance… the right balance To help maximise a home’s energy efficiency, select the combination of insulation and thermal mass that best suits your climatic region. Across Australia, there are considerable differences between maximum and minimum temperatures in summer and winter. To achieve the best thermal performance, housing design and construction materials must be appropriate to your local climatic conditions. The right combination of thermal insulation to moderate temperature swings, can create a home that is both energy efficient and comfortable. Thermal Insulation Thermal insulation can be used to reduce the rate of heat transfer through external surfaces. Heat always flows from a warm object to a cold one. The rate of flow depends on the materials used and the temperature difference. The insulation’s resistance to heat transfer is measured by R-value – the higher the R-value, the more effective the product is at resisting heat flow into the building during summer and out of it in winter. Thermal mass Thermal mass describes a material’s ability to absorb heat, store it and at a later time

release it. Materials with a high thermal mass keep a building cooler during the summer by absorbing heat from the sun and releasing it over a period of time. A slab on ground is preferable to a suspended slab in most climates because it has greater thermal mass due to its direct contact with the ground. Masonry walls with cavity insulation and rammed earth walls also provide good thermal mass. Types of insulation Bulk insulation • Effective in cold climates • Relies on pockets of trapped air within its structure to resist the transfer of conducted and convected heat • Can be made from cellulose fibre, sheep wool, polyester, glasswool and rockwool. Reflective insulation • Effective in warmer climates • Works by reflecting heat away with its polished metallic surface • Includes aluminium foil sarking, foil boards and foil batts.

Louvre windows can allow natural ventilation through twice as much of a window area capturing fresh air as effectively as possible. This passive cooling approach reduces the reliance on artificial air-conditioning systems, which thereby lowers energy costs and minimizes the release of emissions into the environment. Usually louvres are cyclone rated to provide a tight seal to withstand bad weather. Options can include toned glass, aluminum, and timber blades to help control solar heat gain. Also clear glass with a low e coating can help improve the insulating properties of the window. Bifold doors are gaining in popularity up here in Darwin which can greatly suit our outdoor entertaining lifestyle, while ensuring plenty of free natural ventilation. However, depending

upon where the bifolds are situated, once dusk falls, the flies, midges, moths, and mosquitoes can have an unwelcome free reign into your living space. Companies like Artilux Australia and others provide retractable insect screens to remedy this. A small bank of screened louvres within any rooms containing bifolds ensures a good exchange of fresh air when the bifolds are closed due to weather or at night. The Green Building Council of Australia has specific guidelines for effective natural ventilation which contribute towards a building’s Green Star accreditation. These recommendations can be helpful when designing or looking to lease or buy a prop erty, particularly in a higher density building. Check out the website for more information: www.gbca.org.au

TEAK AND CANE Anybody driving along the Stuart Highway in Stuart Park – and let’s face it that’s about all of us – cannot fail to notice Teak and Cane. In business for the past 9 years, Alan and Duyen have created a welcoming shop filled with must-have pieces of Asian style furniture and fantastic stone and ceramic statues. The sea grass and hyacinth furniture is bought in whilst all the mahogany is made in Teak and Cane’s own factory. The wood is top grade naturally dark stained mahogany, made specifically for the shop.

The factory opened 2 years ago. Alan and Duyen couldn’t get things made in time and in the quantities they needed, so decided to open their own factory in Central Java. This way they can ensure the furniture is of a consistently high standard. As I was wandering through the shop checking out the great range of products, a customer came in with a design she had created, for a set of shelves. She gave it to Alan and left saying “Thanks Alan I can’t wait to see it”. Yes, Alan and Duyen’s team build furniture from client’s designs. It is a great service and one in which customers can create the look and feel they need in their home. Happily colour is also not an issue. If you don’t want dark mahogany and prefer a honey tone, no problem, this can be arranged. Easy. Teak and Cane is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of furniture and homewares. There is a huge yard filled with stone and ceramic statues, perfect for both indoors and gardens. Alan and Duyen are friendly and welcoming, spending time with their customers to help them find the perfect piece for their home or business. So next time you are driving along the Stuart Highway, don’t go past – stop, park and drop in to Teak and Cane. Alan and Duyen are waiting to welcome you.

With guests arriving in the next month or so for Christmas it is time to get started now.

Haley Roddy Lady Darwin Design 0421 680 221 www.ladydarwin.com.au

When you take on the task of decorating a guest bedroom, its easy to get overwhelmed about the tasks you need to complete so break everything you need to do down into simple steps: 1. Pick the base colors to the bedroom – if you are not repainting then this will include the existing colors of the floors and walls. If painting the walls, choose a color you like and that matches the other items you plan to incorporate. 2 .Add the furniture. In a bedroom, the basics I start with first are a bed, bedside tables and a chair. If you have the space then possibly a dresser or cabinet. 3 . Put in some lighting. Bedside lamps, such as reading lights are common in bedrooms. You can also add a floor lamp for added atmosphere so you don’t have to rely on the central light, which can be too bright. 4 . Layer on fabrics. Sheets, Bedcover and decorative cushions, as well as curtains or blinds. A nice area rug can help make hard flooring more inviting. Remember to use complimentary colors so that the room is pulled together. 5 .Accessorize. Wall art brings bare walls to life, and mirrors can make a small bedroom look larger. As a finishing touch a vase with fresh flowers and some candles adds that extra element of scent.

KITCHEN ESSENTIAL A

CLASSIC

In line with the latest kitchen trends, the Essential kitchen from Toncelli presents us with the very best of two worlds. The massive Olive wood construction brings to mind a traditional, comforting image of a kitchen from which great home-cooked food emerges. But on the other hand, this is no traditional kitchen! Rather, this is a finely-tuned machine with all the latest advanced technology dedicated to helping you make the most of your time in the kitchen. The Olive wood worktop surfaces slide away electrically at the push of a button to reveal stainless steel areas dedicated to cooking and washing, and giving you lots of extra counter space! The clever photoelectric cells in the Essential will block movements it senses are dangerous – the cells ensure maximum safety in the kitchen – a reassuring thought for those with children. The bases of the unit and the tall, standing wardrobe are lacquered in glossy white for a clean look that is easy to maintain. The wardrobe houses all of the large appliances neatly behind its sliding doors. A kitchen for those who love the natural beauty of wood - yet need all the technological advances to keep up with the latest trends and to make their home life better. From Toncelli. From MK Style… here’s another Italian kitchen with sliding doors.

Jeremy O’Donoghue Principal, O’Donoghues First National Real Estate on 8942 8942

O’Donoghues First National Real Estate Principal Jeremy O’Donoghue agrees with comments made recently by outspoken Senator, Bill Heffernan, that Government needed to make changes to avoid overseas investors owning Australia’s assets. “Australian governments and business need to act today to realise the value of our natural assets or investors from overseas will do it for us” Senator Bill Heffernan said, speaking recently at First National Real Estate’s Commercial and Rural Conference in Canberra. The Senator made a passionate plea for changes to help Australians rather than overseas investors realise the value of our assets. “By 2070 China will need to feed 50% of their population from outside the country and they are looking around the world to find investments to make that possible,” Senator Heffernan said. “100 years ago we would never have thought a sovereign power could come and acquire assets here without an army. Now all you need is a cheque book”. Jeremy agreed, saying “Senator Heffernan is right. If we do not find Australian investors, then overseas investors will step in. “The Foreign Takeovers Act is out of date and we need to make sure, if and when foreign investors come in, that they are competing on the same basis as Australian investors,”

Jeremy said. “In a challenging market Australians are being cautious and often the only way to sell a property is to look to overseas investors. We like to get our clients a sale, but it is not in anyone’s interest to get unrealistic prices that then inflate average prices and increase rates. We firmly believe the market has bottomed out and all we need now is some confidence and then we can see Australians investing in both commercial and rural assets.” Senator Heffernan agrees. “There will be a lot of opportunities in the future. We need to make sure everyone investing in Australia does so on the same basis and we need to be able to tax foreign investors and make sure all Australians can benefit from our potential as the market garden of Asia.”

“We in Australia are wooden headed, we think agriculture is a mature industry and it is not. We need to get the modern equivalent of soldier settlers to develop the land and develop solutions or someone will come and do it for us,” Senator Heffernan said.

Living in the Territory means cyclones are a part of life. Cyclone season in the Top End officially starts November 1 and goes through to April 30. Cyclones are dangerous because they can produce destructive winds and heavy rainfall with flooding and storm surges. Preparing for a cyclone should start before a cyclone is on your doorstep. There are a few things you need to know and do in order to prepare yourself, your family and your home in the event of a cyclone. What can I do now to prepare? • Clean up your yard. Airborne debris can cause a lot of damage during cyclones. It is in everyone’s interest to ensure that backyards and outside worksites are tidied up by removing rubbish and putting away or lashing down equipment. • Work out where you will shelter and what you will do. • Pack an emergency kit. • Ensure your neighbours understand how they should prepare. • Have a family/household emergency plan What should I have in my emergency kit? Emergency Kit should sustain you and your family for 72 hours or more • Battery operated radio with spare batteries • Torch with spare batteries, candles, matches • First aid kit • Blankets or sleeping bags • Toilet paper and essential toiletries • Special needs for infants, or people in your care (food, formula, nappies, toys) • Money including change for phone calls • Important documents (passport, licenses, birth certificate, insurance

information) • Strong sealable plastic bags (clothing, valuables, documents and photographs) • A mobile phone, spare battery and charger • Extra car and house keys • A copy of your household plan • Pet supplies • Non-perishable foods (dried and canned, can opener) • 10 litres of bottled water per person (3 days plus) • Portable cooker (if using gas have spare canister) • Cooking and eating equipment and utensils

Did you know there is a “Living Insurance benefit”

WE CAN HELP!

Unfortunately we all know someone that has been affected by a major medical event. Whether it is a terminal condition or someone who has battled through to the other side after medical treatment. Whilst we are all living longer we are also suffering from a higher occurrence (and at early ages) of serious medical events such as cancer, stroke and heart attacks. What would happen to your family if one of you suffered from one of these events? Would you have the money to be able to afford the appropriate treatment? Would you have the ability to survive financially without an income whilst treatment is undertaken? Would you want your partner to be able to take some time off work to care for you? Many people do not realize that you can insure against these events and you do NOT need to die in order to make a claim. Trauma insurance is what we call a living insurance. You simply need to be medically diagnosed with the condition in order for a lump sum benefit to become payable. This lump sum is designed to help you pay your medical costs, continue to meet your mortgage payments and all your other day to day expenses and supplement any lost income. It is at these stressful times that you want to have the comfort of knowing you are fully protected and can focus solely on your health rather than on the financial pressures associated with a serious illness. A lump sum

of $50,000 or $100,000 can go a long way in helping you recover. The other great thing is that the cover is not linked to your occupation. So working in a labor intense role or on a mine site doesn’t exclude you or make your premiums ridiculously expensive. Medical statistics show us, 3.67 million Australians are affected by heart, stroke and vascular disease(2) and 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer.(1) Our job is to make sure that should you be diagnosed with such a medical condition it doesn’t impact upon your financial health. Call us today to find out how we can protect you and your loved ones. Source 1. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Cancer in Australia: an overview 2.
