Organiser Lilliane Gomatos is looking forward to the biggest Glenti ever this year, and for a very special reason. “The most important aspect of Glenti is the fundraising. All the stalls are run by clubs associated with the Greek community. Evan Papandonakis and Jim Hatzivalsamis source donations from the crowd over the two days. Each year we choose a children’s charity for the year and then raise money over the two days of Glenti by pledges.” With all funds raised going back into the Darwin community, this makes the Glenti a priority event for locals to support. In celebration of their 25th year of operations, this year’s Glenti will go out with bang. There will be a spectacular fireworks show on a barge on the water, around 9pm on the Sunday and again to close the event at midnight. Featuring a selection of oil paintings, ceramics, etchings and works on paper, Wendy Sharpe delves into the mysterious and theatrical world of Burlesque. Known for her painterly and expressionist style, her works often have an autobiographical theme involving a voluptuous female protagonist. As a frequent finalist and previous winner of some of Australia’s most prestigious Art Prizes; The Archibald (1996), The Sulman (1986) and the
Portia Geach Memorial Prize (2003 and 1995), and with a long list of successful solo exhibitions, residencies, commissions and prizes, Wendy Sharpe is classified as one of Australia’s most accomplished artists. Opening night will also include the launch of a book ‘Truth or Dare’ detailing Wendy’s accomplishments and many of the exhibition works. It can not only manage your accounts but it can create quotes and invoices with your logo! Meaning that you can do business on the go straight from your iPad. It can manage stock control. Ignoring it or pretending that it's not happening is time wasting and dare I say it, a self sabotage strategy! The rules for navigating social networks apply both on and off line. Friends, family, colleagues and community authenticate us by behaviour. So some good old fashioned tried and true reminders like, "think before you speak (or post)", "you have two ears and one mouth for a good reason - use them proportionately" and "to thine own self be true" are just a few mantras worth memorising. And here's the pot of gold around keeping it real: we all resonate with honesty and integrity. Just because we cope better on some days, then others doesn't mean we're a failure and need to fabricate. We just need to maintain a balanced perspective and keep it real.

BAMBOO LOUNGE Romal, successful owner/manager of Thailicious restaurant’s, new venture is an exciting addition to Darwin culinary scene; as he has not only used his personal experience; that of his mother Madhu, a wonderful cook and foodie; but also that of his experienced chefs from Asia to create this exciting menu of Eastern specialities; together with Western favourites. For our entrée, we chose Momo ($6.00). Delicious steamed Nepalese dumplings, homemade by Madhu, filled with meat, served with a complex tomato, ginger, garlic and coriander sauce; all fresh ingredients. A must try to begin your Asian Odyssey at Bamboo Lounge. Korean Barbeque Beef Rib ($18.00) was our next course. Marinated moist beef ribs with deep, rich Korean flavours, served with potatoes and crisp vegetables in a hot pot. Thai Satay Roast Pork Belly ($17.00) was out next temptation. Pieces of roasted pork

The Thai Tom Yum Fried Rice with prawns ($18.00) was another delight. Complex flavours of spicy Thai fried rice, wok tossed with coriander, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, chilli and mixed vegetables. Bursting with fresh, spicy flavours. Yum! For dessert, we were tempted by Madhu’s homemade Fried Ice Cream ($8.00) Creamy with a fabulous crunchy coating; lovingly made by Madhu. A great way to finish what was an exciting Asian Odyssey at Bamboo Lounge.

relaxed family friendly dining This month we’re on the hunt for some family friendly casual bistro dining, which leads us to the Airport Tavern who have a new kitchen team on board. A gander at the menu reveals the regular bistro offerings all at wallet friendly prices. Most are under $25 in actual fact. There’s one token vegetarian dish there too, We visit twice in one week, trying out the lamb shanks, oven roasted chicken breast, grilled salmon and finally the twice cooked pork belly. The meat on my lamb was fall off the bone and moist, there didn’t seem to be any extra flavour infused in to them but it was quite nice and for $22.90 one cannot complain. The mash was smoothilicious too. Lovely dish. The oven baked chicken breast, similar to the lamb didn’t have any special treatment done to it, but was cooked perfectly and harmonised with the rest of the elements on the plate beautifully. The pork belly with potato puree, mixed greens and baby corn this time around ($23.90) was nicely cooked and with good flavour, the hoi-sin glaze was delightful – I wished for a bit more on the plate, and the potato puree was deliciously light and creamy. The grilled local Atlantic salmon got the thumbs up all around, the parents in-law saying it was quite nice.

Well after two visits I reckon I’ve had enough info to go by and I’m liking the Airport Tavern. The food isn’t high end quality, but that’s not what it’s trying to do. It’s all about good food at great prices in a relaxed family friendly casual environment and in that respect it’s a winner in my books. I’ll definitely add this to my weeknight I’mtoo-lazy-to-cook destinations.

Start’em early! Since we develop our eating habits during childhood, it’s a good idea to get your kids hooked on eating fish, convincing them to eat it can sometimes be a challenge. My children did not really have that hurdle; convincing them was easy, it is just the ‘norm’ and a natural menu item selected two to three time a week. The thing to remember is that parents need to be role models; if they aren't eating fish it is going to be hard to make a child eat it. Start early and keep on trying. Most of us develop our lifelong eating habits during childhood. If you offer fish to your child when they are babies, chances are they will acquire a taste for it. My suggestion would be to offer younger children fish with a soft texture (name a species). Seafood is much easier to purchase now days as ssupermarkets are doing their bit, opening seafood counters in many stores with a wider choice of fish and sealing fillets in "readymade containers” making cooking even easier. Not that fish should be difficult. Frying a piece of Saddletail Snapper is no more difficult than a steak. A good choice for the healthy diet; eating fish or other seafood at least three to four times a week would see prime sources of essential nutrients (Protein, Vitamin A, B12, D & E, Zinc, Iron, Calcium, Iodine and Selenium) and remember buying local supports an industry that produces more than $50 million worth of product a year and contributes to the companies through fish sales, local jobs, suppliers, processing and retail outlets. Research has found that most resolutions revolve around spending more time with loved ones, getting the weight under control, becoming fitter or knocking a bad habit on the head. Essentially they are about finding a better life/work balance that improves physical and mental wellbeing. Some years ago when studying naturopathy I was introduced to the Triad of Health; a simple yet effective model that highlights the importance of having balance of one’s physical, emotional and nutritional self. Achieving physical balance means having adequate movement, good posture, a healthy weight and rest. Nutritional balance requires enough vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats and carbohydrates to provide the body with its fuel. For emotional balance you need happy, nurturing and loving relationships and freedom from emotionally toxic environments. Balance cannot be achieved if you have too much of one thing and not enough of another however. For example, if you are exercising a lot, you need extra antioxidants and nutrients to support you physically. Being happy and emotionally balanced does not necessarily mean that you have a good body weight, cardiovascular fitness or adequate muscle mass. Similarly eating well is not going to provide adequate
nutrition if you are stressed out to the max, as your body will respond to stress by accruing some minerals and dumping others. So what does a balanced day look like? Try starting your day with an early morning workout. Eat a well balanced diet throughout the day and end the day with an emotionally balancing activity such as meditation or listening to soothing music. Balancing the physical, emotional and nutritional self is definitely the key to a lifetime of good health. So as you jump into your midyear makeover, think about how you can achieve balance. If you have a tattoo you are not alone. In Australia it is estimated that 3 million people are currently sporting one or more tattoos. Some visible in normal clothing, others not. While your tattoo may have given you and others pleasure in the past, maybe your circumstances have changed or you are simply just bored with it, and have been giving some thought to how best get it removed. It is estimated that some 50% of tattoo wearers want their tattoo removed at some time in their life. Many want to say goodbye to the ink... There are many reasons why you would like to remove your tattoo. Dissatisfaction with the design because it was poorly executed. Concerns that a tattoo is visible in work clothing. It was a rash decision at the time. Ex partners name is incorporated in the design. New partner dislikes Tattoos. The design has faded over time. Until now the only treatment available was Laser. The Tattfree removal techniques target all colours, age, sizes and styles of tattoo including the most exotic hues and pigment blends. We concentrate our Tattfree removal system on the top layers of skin that contain the tattoo pigment. The procedure is very similar to the way you originally received your tattoo. During the procedure a proprietary fluid is delivered into the tattoo with the use of micro needles. We use a fractional system, meaning we do not try to remove the entire tattoo at once. This enables healthy skin to migrate to the abraded skin helping the healing process. During the process you can see the ink rising to the top, this then forms a scab which can take anywhere from 10 to 20 days to fall off depending on your healing abilities. Once the scabs have fallen off you will see new pink baby skin. The treatments are spaced between 8 to 12 weeks depending on each individuals healing abilities. Without putting a downer on certain types of apparel, a new survey by Chiropractors in NSW has revealed that some people are risking physical injuries due to fashion choices. The survey found that on average, chiropractors in NSW can see 10 to 15 patients per week with problems caused by fashionable clothing and accessories. From personal experience these numbers are similar in Darwin clinics as well. By far the most implicated fashion accessory was high heels. Over 65 per cent of Chiropractors in NSW listed them as their number one concern, leading to lower back pain, knee problems, unpleasant bunions and in some cases foot and ankle sprains. In this case high heels throw the centre of gravity forward, causing you to lean backwards to keep from falling face first. This overcompensation often leads to low back pain, while instability through the ankle can put additional strain on the knees and hips. Fortunately in Darwin, even though plenty of ladies wear high heels, they generally don’t walk as far in them when compared to our counterparts in bigger cities. Even if you do wear heels to work, and may walk to and from the office, local Darwin citizens tend not to walk as far and tend not to commute on public transport for as long. This reduces the time spent standing or walking in heels and tends to cause less problems. So the problem isn’t just the heels, but the length of time spent in heels. Commonly

This is common after a big night out, especially dancing, or if you are attending a function like a wedding or a ball. So if you like high heels, just wear them, they do look good, but if you intend to spend many hours at a time in them don’t be surprised if you suffer from discomfort in your legs or back for a couple of days after. FESTIVAL TERRITORY The Top End buzzes with a festive vibe across the Dry Season. Do like explorer John McDouall Stuart and follow his namesake highway from Darwin to Katherine to discover Top End regions alive with activity this month!
Beginning with the Merrepen Arts and Sports Festival from the 31st of May until the 2nd of June in the attractive Daly River community of Nauiyu. In its 26th year, the festival showcases the exquisite indigenous visual arts of the region. Saturday and Sunday is your chance to buy art with the festival offering a unique opportunity to purchase decorative Merrepen artworks at community prices. There’s plenty of accommodation locally, so stay the weekend and stick around for the concert with Wendy Matthews, Tracey Bunn, the Emu Sisters and Traditional Dancers on Saturday night. The Adelaide River Races on Saturday the 1st of June is a real country race meeting held on the Top End’s only grass track! Shady grounds with a seven race program, fashion on the field, TAB and bookie facilities on site make this an event on the racing calendar not to be missed. Buses are available from Darwin or make it a longer trip and explore some of the historic attractions in the region, because the fun doesn’t stop there! The following weekend, the Adelaide River Talent Quest brings talent from all over the Territory and interstate. From bush ballads to country rock, it’s all there and the talent quest concludes as the sun sets with a concert that has the showgrounds rocking! Continue the weekend with the Adelaide River Show and join in the thrill of a rodeo, camp draft and rural show. You’ll be in awe as you watch competitors master cattle, in less than 45 seconds each, in the camp draft.
Further down the Stuart Highway the annual Barunga Festival is held in this remote Aboriginal community, via Katherine, over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend from the 7th to the 10th, and is one of the major and longest-running indigenous community festivals in the Top End. Visitors can camp in the community during the alcohol-free festival and interact with residents who will share their stories and culture. This year is shaping up to be an incredible festival with headliners Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu and John Butler of the John Butler Trio. Katherine’s Fringe Festival from the 21st to the 22nd will feature a newly produced multimedia performance ‘Gorrdondolmi’ - the story of the Rainbow Serpent written, produced and performed by Katherine artists. There will be stacks of free street performances, dance and music as well as a film feature and writers’ festival showcasing some the Territory’s best. Rounding up this jam packed month of activities along the Stuart Highway, the Pine Creek Goldrush Festival from the 27th to the 1st of July will take you back in time. Gold is not the only attraction however, with a damper-making competition, nugget hunt, ‘Golden Oldies’ rugby game and much more. Over the years we have seen road rage increase dramatically. It was very evident whilst I was living in Sydney, and I have not noticed it to the same extent in Darwin probably due to the lesser amount of people on the roads however it still does occur. A lovely friend of mine was spat on in the face by a driver at a set of lights for driving too slowly and apparently slowing him down (meanwhile she had a screaming baby in the back seat, and a four year old who kept undoing their seatbelt – needless to say she was a little distracted!). The potential of road rage to escalate into an ugly situation quickly is high, and there is the risk of something simple like starting off at the lights too slowly turning into violence. How can something seemingly so trivial trigger people into violence? Road rage is simply an outlet for societies built up stress. This frustration may come from work, relationships or finances. An incident on the road can often be, as they say, the straw that broke the camel’s back. If you find you are either the victim or perpetrator of road rage, here are some simple tips to overcome road rage incidents: How do you overcome road rage incidents? 1) Be compassionate and manage your emotional state – you can’t control another person’s state of mind, however you have full responsibility of your emotions. For all you know, the person in the other car may be driving inappropriately because they have just experienced the loss of a loved one – who knows what their situation is!
2) Avoid reacting – whether you are in the wrong or right avoid staring, gestures or honking. Ignore the other vehicle. You need to put your ego to the side and not react as this may escalate emotions – as emotion increases, logic decreases. 3) Move on – If you are in or outside of your car leave the incident and move on to your next destination provided all is safe to do so. 4) Stay in your car – if you are already in your car you are safer to stay in the car. If you need to wind your window down to talk only do so an inch or better still move on. If you are outside your car get in promptly. Above all I highly recommend learning some basic self-defence skills and practice implementing them so that you can use them if the need arises. Australia continues to grapple with the incessant hyping up of a fictitious housing bubble. Such talk is detrimental to consumer confidence and harmful to the wider economy. The most recent update on consumer confidence showed a sharp decline. There are a myriad of reasons for this situation, not the least of which is global uncertainty and angst about a carbon tax at home. However, the endless bleating about a non-existent housing bubble in Australia certainly isn’t helping.

Let’s be clear about it, Australia is NOT facing a house price bubble. Furthermore, those who control the flow of money agree there is no bubble. The Reserve Bank of Australia does not subscribe to the bubble view, nor does Treasury. Rather than talking about bubbles, we should be talking about housing shortages and what we can do to fix them. The Northern Territory knows all about this situation - the level of new home building has been running substantially below underlying demographic demand for an extended period of time. As a nation we need to be engaging in discussions about how we can best meet growing demand from population growth? How we can improve affordability – both for renters and those looking to enter the housing market? Where can we get the necessary funding needed to satisfy residential infrastructure requirements? Those claiming that Australia’s housing market could go the same way as the US have no understanding of reality. Australia’s market is vastly different to the US. We have a strong banking system, an unemployment rate almost half of the US, full recourse housing loans, and very low default rates. A home is the largest asset most Australians will ever own and as such the topic of house prices naturally elicits emotive discussion. It is fair and reasonable to inform Australian home owners that the exceptionally strong house price growth of 2009 (and for much of
the last decade for that matter), will not be repeated any time soon and that a period of relatively stable house prices is likely to ensue in the short term although we are seeing signs of much stronger demand in some areas including the territory. This is particularly so in the purchase of new apartements.. It is unfair and unreasonable to scare Australian households with fanciful, headline grabbing stories of a bubble that will become a crash, when such conjecture doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. Talk of a bubble is very unhelpful at a time when we require more investment in housing, especially affordable housing. The faster the fanciful storytellers put their wands back in their castles, the faster the outlook for new home building will improve.

Fruit Trees IN POTS Growing fruit trees in pots allows you to have them in paved areas and unlikely garden spaces. To grow a decent, fruit bearing tree, it is recommended that you use a pot at least 40cm or larger in size, depending on the size the tree is likely to be when it reaches maturity.

A pot this size can be difficult to move once it contains potting mix, so it’s best to carefully consider the position of your tree before potting it up. Fruit trees need good levels of sunlight to perform well and bear fruit, so position your tree where it will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight every day. Any plants grown in pots will be more vulnerable to dry-out than plants grown in the ground. They will also be more susceptible to extremes of temperature. Large pots can also have problems with drainage and waterlogging if the wrong type of potting mix is used. Unlike plants grown in the ground which can access water and nutrients from over considerable distances, plants grown in pots will be completely dependent on the potting mix for all their nutritional needs. This means a quality potting mix is vital, and is a wise investment in insuring the success of your tree. High quality potting mixes like premium Amgrow or Searles Pots & Tubs are highly recommended. While established fruit trees in the ground should only need watering four times a week during hot, dry weather, the same trees grown in pots will need to be watered five times a week or more in similar circumstances. While they’re
still establishing, potted fruit trees will need watering at least once a day in hot, dry conditions. Even at cooler times of the year, potted trees will need more watering than those in the ground. This extra watering can cause leaching of nutrients from the potting mix, which means it is also necessary to feed plants more regularly. Apply Kickalong Fruit & Flower - an excellent organic plant food or osmocote. Fertilise citrus trees while fruit is forming to ensure bountiful crops later on. Keep trees well mulched, water them deeply and regularly and apply magnesium and trace elements. Yellowing older leaves can mean magnesium deficiency, in which case a dose of Epson salts could help save your crop. Fruit trees that don’t grow too big or too fast are the best candidates for growing in pots. Some good choices are the dwarf lemon tree, grafted dwarf oranges, Kaffir lime, dwarf pomegranate, blueberries, feijoa, Brazilian cherry and strawberry guava. Pest to watch out for; Scale, mealybug, citrus leaf miner and fruit fly. Potted fruit trees can benefit from an annual pruning to make sure they stay compact….. Until next time, Happy Harvest…….
