Organiser Lilliane Gomatos is looking forward to the biggest Glenti ever this year, and for a very special reason. “The most important aspect of Glenti is the fundraising. All the stalls are run by clubs associated with the Greek community. Evan Papandonakis and Jim Hatzivalsamis source donations from the crowd over the two days. Each year we choose a children’s charity for the year and then raise money over the two days of Glenti by pledges.” With all funds raised going back into the Darwin community, this makes the Glenti a priority event for locals to support. In celebration of their 25th year of operations, this year’s Glenti will go out with bang. There will be a spectacular fireworks show on a barge on the water, around 9pm on the Sunday and again to close the event at midnight. So make sure you get to Glenti this Queen’s Birthday long weekend!

‘360 Allstars’ is circus with an edge. Forget the clowns on trikes, jugglers and acrobats. These guys make the circus cool again! They’ve got elite athletes on BMX bikes flipping through the air. They’ve got freestyle basketball so jaw-dropping it makes you wish you could play. And then there are the break-dancers, the live music and the stunning live-looping AV projections. It’s definitely a circus – just not as you know it! It’s all deconstructed and put back together with an extreme edge. It’s on Thursday 27 June, making it the perfect school holiday entertainment for all the family. If the only football worth marking is a ‘Sherrin’, the Centre has the perfect play for you. ‘The Club’ stars Gold Logie winner John Wood (Sgt Tom Croydon in Blue Heelers) as Laurie Holden, the coach of one of the oldest clubs in the AFL. Then you’re in for a treat when the Australian Burlesque Festival brings its ‘Glamorous Tease’ to the Darwin Entertainment Centre on Saturday 15 June. Dolores Daiquiri and Rosy Rabbit headline an incredible night that showcases why Burlesque is riding an international wave of revival. The show does have partial nudity, so it’s for an 18+ audience. Then mark the end of the month with a family that makes yours look easy at ‘It’s My Party and I’ll Die if I Want To’ on Saturday 29 June. BUSINESS UNUSUAL THEATRE & BROWN’S MART PRODUCTIONS PRESENT

Contagion’s Kiss 4 -16 JUNE 2013 Business Unusual and Brown’s Mart Productions bring hauntingly beautiful light to another dark and significant chapter in Darwin’s history through physical theatre, mask, puppetry, imagery and original music. Contagion’s Kiss reveals the strength of the human spirit inspired by true and rich accounts of three locals, stigmatised and abandoned in isolation at the Channel Island Leprosarium between 1931 – 1955. Their fates were sealed in an extreme, segregated and hopeless environment, separated from their families with no means to escape the island or Government policy. Directed and co-written by three time Green Room recipient Sarah Cathcart, featuring the craft of mask and puppet specialists Nicky Fearn and Conor Fox, a score composed by Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Biddy Connor, sets and costumes designed by Marg Horwell - also a 3 time Green Room recipient, projection from globally recognised film maker Elka Kerkofs and illumination from lighting designer Rebecca Adams, Contagion’s Kiss is innovative and collaborative theatre from highly skilled practitioners. Don’t miss this third Darwin world premiere from BUU’s exceptional artistic team, Nicky Fearn and Sarah Cathcart, the creators of critically acclaimed Tracy (2008) and The Pearler (2004). DarwinLife | Tax Time

T A X time Yes it’s that time again. Tax time. There are a multitude of ways to complete and submit your return. You can dust off a pen and work through Tax Pack, submit online with e-tax, or hand it all over to an accountant, or tax agent. We are spoilt for choice really, and many of us have systems in place and submit like clockwork on July 1 each year. Did I say many of us? I meant hardly any of us! So if this is you, maybe this is the year to embrace change and finally get it together where tax is concerned. To get you motivated here’s our top tips for tax time 2013.

BOOKKEEPING 3 There are lots of ways to keep track of your financial position. The usual suspects include MYOB, Quicken etc. But they are expensive for a small operator or micro business. I'd like to introduce you to Bookkeeping 3. This is an iPad app that is a fully functioning accounting system. But it is more than just a bookkeeping or accounting package. It can not only manage your accounts but it can create quotes and invoices with your logo! Meaning that you can do business on the go straight from your iPad. It can manage stock control. Meaning you always have an accurate level on hand whilst you are Dr Iain Waller is a Management Consultant who runs Nakara Consulting. He seeks out and uses a variety of apps on his iPad2. radicalinnovation.com.au

on the road, at a coffee shop, someone's office or the beach! It even has the capacity to manage all of your supplier and sales information and contacts. You can even run more than one business on it at a time! Did I mention it is specifically designed for the iPad? Meaning it uses all of the touch capacity and interactive capacity of the iPad. If you have a micro business and need a bookkeeping package then for less than $50 as a one off payment, what else is there? Nothing! Heck, it even calculates your GST for you. Oh and all reports can be emailed to your accountant as .csv files meaning he/she can upload the data into any of the systems they might use. Bookkeeping 3 is available from the App Store.

Workforce Strategy – make sure you are planning on the future not the past!

It’s a well established fact that with our small population, it is a very shallow candidate pool for Northern Territorian employers. Three years ago,(May 2010), I wrote on this same topic. It’s worth reviewing this article and comparing it with the situation today.

NAVIGATING

SOCIAL networks I'm going to push the boundaries in the next few articles and weave this topic in and out of the online/offline world. You see I've noticed something that really disturbs me in the online world and I know I'm not alone. Far too often I'm reading comments/posts and status updates and then either hearing or seeing with my own eyes, the disconnect between 'the words' and reality.

I get it that no one wants to necessarily 'air their dirty linen in public' and that pretence can feel safe. BUT and yep, that's a screaming out loud but, whether you're navigating socially on or off line, keep it real folks! Posting falsehoods on line will eventually bite you on the bum and expose you from behind the veil of the World Wide Web. And besides, why lie to yourself ? If you're not coping in your personal life, or your business is going belly up, get some help. Ignoring it or pretending that it's not happening is time wasting and dare I say it, a self sabotage strategy! The rules for navigating social networks apply both on and off line. Friends, family, colleagues and community authenticate us by behaviour. So some good old fashioned tried and true reminders like, "think before you speak (or post)", "you have two ears and one mouth for a good reason - use them proportionately" and "to thine own self be true" are just a few mantras worth memorising. And here's the pot of gold around keeping it real: we all resonate with honesty and integrity. Just because we cope better on some days, then others doesn't mean we're a failure and need to fabricate. We just need to maintain a balanced perspective and keep it real.

OUT

BY JACK STEPHANE

BAMBOO LOUNGE Romal, successful owner/manager of Thailicious restaurant’s, new venture is an exciting addition to Darwin culinary scene; as he has not only used his personal experience; that of his mother Madhu, a wonderful cook and foodie; but also that of his experienced chefs from Asia to create this exciting menu of Eastern specialities; together with Western favourites. For our entrée, we chose Momo ($6.00). Delicious steamed Nepalese dumplings, homemade by Madhu, filled with meat, served with a complex tomato, ginger, garlic and coriander sauce; all fresh ingredients. A must try to begin your Asian Odyssey at Bamboo Lounge. Korean Barbeque Beef Rib ($18.00) was our next course. Marinated moist beef ribs with deep, rich Korean flavours, served with potatoes and crisp vegetables in a hot pot. Thai Satay Roast Pork Belly ($17.00) was out next temptation. Pieces of roasted pork

belly, cooked to perfection; crisp, crunchy crackle, topped with a homemade peanut sauce. To accompany these main courses, we chose Indonesian/Malaysian Nasi Goreng with chicken ($14.00). Without a doubt, this was one of the best Nasi Gorengs I have tasted, as it was made with homemade sambal and kepas manis, generous pieces of chicken and prawn crackers. A winner. The Thai Tom Yum Fried Rice with prawns ($18.00) was another delight. Complex flavours of spicy Thai fried rice, wok tossed with coriander, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, chilli and mixed vegetables. Bursting with fresh, spicy flavours. Yum! For dessert, we were tempted by Madhu’s homemade Fried Ice Cream ($8.00) Creamy with a fabulous crunchy coating; lovingly made by Madhu. A great way to finish what was an exciting Asian Odyssey at Bamboo Lounge.

Airport Tavern

relaxed family friendly dining This month we’re on the hunt for some family friendly casual bistro dining, which leads us to the Airport Tavern who have a new kitchen team on board. A gander at the menu reveals the regular bistro offerings all at wallet friendly prices. Most are under $25 in actual fact. There’s one token vegetarian dish there too, We visit twice in one week, trying out the lamb shanks, oven roasted chicken breast, grilled salmon and finally the twice cooked pork belly. The meat on my lamb was fall off the bone and moist, there didn’t seem to be any extra flavour infused in to them but it was quite nice and for $22.90 one cannot complain. The mash was smoothilicious too. Lovely dish. The oven baked chicken breast, similar to the lamb didn’t have any special treatment done to it, but was cooked perfectly and harmonised with the rest of the elements on the plate beautifully. The pork belly with potato puree, mixed greens and baby corn this time around ($23.90) was nicely cooked and with good flavour, the hoi-sin glaze was delightful – I wished for a bit more on the plate, and the potato puree was deliciously light and creamy. The grilled local Atlantic salmon got the thumbs up all around, the parents in-law saying it was quite nice.

Well after two visits I reckon I’ve had enough info to go by and I’m liking the Airport Tavern. The food isn’t high end quality, but that’s not what it’s trying to do. It’s all about good food at great prices in a relaxed family friendly casual environment and in that respect it’s a winner in my books. I’ll definitely add this to my weeknight I’mtoo-lazy-to-cook destinations.

Start’em early! Since we develop our eating habits during childhood, it’s a good idea to get your kids hooked on eating fish, convincing them to eat it can sometimes be a challenge. My children did not really have that hurdle; convincing them was easy, it is just the ‘norm’ and a natural menu item selected two to three time a week. The thing to remember is that parents need to be role models; if they aren't eating fish it is going to be hard to make a child eat it. Start early and keep on trying. Most of us develop our lifelong eating habits during childhood. If you offer fish to your child when they are babies, chances are they will acquire a taste for it. My suggestion would be to offer younger children fish with a soft texture (name a species). Seafood is much easier to purchase now days as ssupermarkets are doing their bit, opening seafood counters in many stores with a wider choice of fish and sealing fillets in "readymade containers” making cooking even easier. Not that fish should be difficult. Frying a piece of Saddletail Snapper is no more difficult than a steak. A good choice for the healthy diet; eating fish or other seafood at least three to four times a week would see prime sources of essential nutrients (Protein, Vitamin A, B12, D & E, Zinc, Iron, Calcium, Iodine and Selenium) and remember buying local supports an industry that produces more than $50 million worth of product a year and contributes to the companies through fish sales, local jobs, suppliers, processing and retail outlets. GET STUCK INTO YOUR

Balancing

Midyear Makeover Midyear is a great time to revisit your goals for 2013. Alas, once the frivolity of the New Year is behind us, resolutions and promises are often forgotten or put into the “too hard basket”. But wait! We are only half way through 2013 so all is not lost.

THE TRIAD OF HEALTH

Good health requires a balance in all 3 aspects of the triad

Physical / Structural Nutritional / Biochemical Spiritual / Emotional

Research has found that most resolutions revolve around spending more time with loved ones, getting the weight under control, becoming fitter or knocking a bad habit on the head. Essentially they are about finding a better life/work balance that improves physical and mental wellbeing. Some years ago when studying naturopathy I was introduced to the Triad of Health; a simple yet effective model that highlights the importance of having balance of one’s physical, emotional and nutritional self. Achieving physical balance means having adequate movement, good posture, a healthy weight and rest. Nutritional balance requires enough vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats and carbohydrates to provide the body with its fuel. For emotional balance you need happy, nurturing and loving relationships and freedom from emotionally toxic environments. Balance cannot be achieved if you have too much of one thing and not enough of another however. For example, if you are exercising a lot, you need extra antioxidants and nutrients to support you physically. Being happy and emotionally balanced does not necessarily mean that you have a good body weight, cardiovascular fitness or adequate muscle mass. Similarly eating well is not going to provide adequate

nutrition if you are stressed out to the max, as your body will respond to stress by accruing some minerals and dumping others. So what does a balanced day look like? Try starting your day with an early morning workout. Eat a well balanced diet throughout the day and end the day with an emotionally balancing activity such as meditation or listening to soothing music. Balancing the physical, emotional and nutritional self is definitely the key to a lifetime of good health. So as you jump into your midyear makeover, think about how you can achieve balance. For help with all your health care needs, book a consultation with naturopath Vivienne Savill, on 89810047.

Vanity Hair

Vanity Hair has been open in Parap for 11 years now but there has been a salon in the same location since 1962.

(left to right, Tenneil, Cindy, Chris, Brianna, Toni, Melanie, Yalene)

The team at Vanity Hair love the mix of old and new clients and of any age group. They see their selves as a happy bunch and are always receiving positive feedback from clients in regards to their laid back, friendly atmosphere. The team are definitely not laid back when it comes to hair though as the condition of a clients hair is their number one priority. The owner of Vanity Hair, Chris Kanochkin says, “We will not perform unrealistic services on clients, and would rather make a long term plan to make their hair look and feel it’s best.” Vanity’s product of choice is TIGI. The team uses TIGI Copyright Colours and recommends TIGI Hair Reborn. It is exclusive to Vanity Hair in the Territory and is second to none. Vanity also uses Catwalk, S Factor and Bedhead to keep you looking as hot as the day you left the salon. “Your hair is your best fashion accessory and healthy hair is even better,” Chris says. For those of you wanting extra volume and length, Vanity has also been doing hair extensions for years and offers tapes, micro beads and fusion (individual bonded.) Vanity is always trying to bring something new to Darwin and are now stockists of H2D irons and wands as well as Cloud 9 irons. Exciting things are coming up this year at Vanity Hair. Chris is off to the Hair Expo in Sydney this month, which will give her some fresh, new ideas for the Salon. Chris says that education is a vital part of this industry as it is forever changing. “I will be taking everything this Expo has to offer, and hopefully be able to turn that into new experiences at the Salon.”

Introducing... Tattfree vs Laser

What is the process?

> L aser only addresses a small amount of pigment colours.

> T he tattooed areas are lightly abraded with a special handpiece similar to the one used in your original tattoo session.

Before

> T he process is virtually painless and if you have a low pain tolerance a topical anaesthetic can be applied to minimise discomfort.

Immediately after 1st treatment

> T attfree tattoo removal avoids these potential risks and addresses all pigment colours, generally in fewer treatments and at a substantially lower cost.

How does it work? > W e use the exclusive Tattfree tattoo removal system. > T his process will take a series of treatments depending on the size of the tattoo. > F or the average size tattoo you will need approximately 4 treatments. > T he treatments are designed to remove the pigmented areas of your tattoo.

> T reatment times are approximately 30 minutes, during which small circles are created over the surface of your tattoo.

one week after 1st treatment

> W e leave small spaces in between the circles which will be treated in subsequent sessions. The spacing strategy helps with the healing process and minimises the chances of scarring.

one week after 2nd treatment

> T ime between sessions is usually eight to ten weeks.

> T attfree uses a proprietary fluid to bring the tattoo pigment to the surface in the form of a scab. > O nce the scab falls off there is no more pigment and the underlying skin is clear.

1. Shoulders pushed back. 2. Chest is more prominent 3. Hips and lower spine are curvy and buttocks more prominent 4. Knees are bent along with the hips driving the thighs and knees forward

If you have a tattoo you are not alone. In Australia it is estimated that 3 million people are currently sporting one or more tattoos. Some visible in normal clothing, others not. While your tattoo may have given you and others pleasure in the past, maybe your circumstances have changed or you are simply just bored with it, and have been giving some thought to how best get it removed. It is estimated that some 50% of tattoo wearers want their tattoo removed at some time in their life. Many want to say goodbye to the ink... There are many reasons why you would like to remove your tattoo. Dissatisfaction with the design because it was poorly executed. Concerns that a tattoo is visible in work clothing. It was a rash decision at the time. Ex partners name is incorporated in the design. New partner dislikes Tattoos. The design has faded over time. Until now the only treatment available was Laser. The Tattfree removal techniques target all colours, age, sizes and styles of tattoo including the most exotic hues and pigment blends. We concentrate our Tattfree removal system on the top layers of skin that contain the tattoo pigment. The procedure is very similar to the way you originally received your tattoo. During the procedure a proprietary fluid is delivered into the tattoo with the use of micro needles. We use a fractional system, meaning we do not try to remove the entire tattoo at once. This enables healthy skin to migrate to the abraded skin helping the healing process. During the process you can see the ink rising to the top, this then forms a scab which can take anywhere from 10 to 20 days to fall off depending on your healing abilities. Once the scabs have fallen off you will see new pink baby skin. The treatments are spaced between 8 to 12 weeks depending on each individuals healing abilities. Removal is achieved in about 4 sessions depending on the size of the tattoo. Visit us at www.tattfree.com.au or call us on 89815557 for more information.

Without putting a downer on certain types of apparel, a new survey by Chiropractors in NSW has revealed that some people are risking physical injuries due to fashion choices. The survey found that on average, chiropractors in NSW can see 10 to 15 patients per week with problems caused by fashionable clothing and accessories. From personal experience these numbers are similar in Darwin clinics as well. By far the most implicated fashion accessory was high heels. Over 65 per cent of Chiropractors in NSW listed them as their number one concern, leading to lower back pain, knee problems, unpleasant bunions and in some cases foot and ankle sprains. In this case high heels throw the centre of gravity forward, causing you to lean backwards to keep from falling face first. This overcompensation often leads to low back pain, while instability through the ankle can put additional strain on the knees and hips. Fortunately in Darwin, even though plenty of ladies wear high heels, they generally don’t walk as far in them when compared to our counterparts in bigger cities. Even if you do wear heels to work, and may walk to and from the office, local Darwin citizens tend not to walk as far and tend not to commute on public transport for as long. This reduces the time spent standing or walking in heels and tends to cause less problems. So the problem isn’t just the heels, but the length of time spent in heels. Commonly

local Chiropractors tend to see patients with high heel related problems after a special event. This is common after a big night out, especially dancing, or if you are attending a function like a wedding or a ball. So if you like high heels, just wear them, they do look good, but if you intend to spend many hours at a time in them don’t be surprised if you suffer from discomfort in your legs or back for a couple of days after. Like always, if your pain persists beyond a few days see a local CAA NT Chiropractor.

STEEL!

As some may know, for a very long time I was apart of the " high vis army", more commonly known as a construction worker. My field was Steelfixing, and I filled every joyous day with back breaking manual labour. The guys would joke that it was more of a sport than a job, considering every lift was a contest and every reo mat tied was a race to finish first.

This got me thinking...

S P R AY TA N Before the Spray Tan Exfoliate your body using either a Waffle glove or Exfoliating cream or lotion, especially your elbows, knees and heels. It helps the tan to spread and develop evenly. Any waxing or shaving should be done at lease 12 hours before. To prevent creating a barrier, don’t apply product containing actives, petroleum-based lotions oils or essential oils. Moisturise the day/night before to prepare the skin, but not on the same day. This will hydrate the skin and prepare it to receive an even spray tan. Wear loose, dark coloured clothing.

made to remove tans. It’s not a waffle glove, it’s made of a soft fibre that polishes off the tan. Your glove will last between 3 to 6 months depending on how much you use it of course. Here at Simply Elegant we use Naked Tan, I’ve been Spray tanning clients for over 15 years and Naked Tan for me stands out above the rest. They are an Australian company, the first to create the two hour wash & wear tan and so with their ongoing research their products are always being tested and improved. I find this tan to have perfect coverage and doesn’t have an orange base. Their retail products are also available from my salon.

After the Spray Tan My favourite spray tan can be showered off between 2 - 4 hours after application. It’s best to use a body Cleanse instead of Soap when you have a tan so as not to strip the tan off quicker. Naked Tan has a great product, Organic Body Cleanser, smells great too. Avoid long soaks in the bathtub. Quick showers are best. Apply moisturiser every day. You can apply Goddess Glaze gradual tan from Naked Tan to build and extend the longevity of your tan.

welcome to

FESTIVAL TERRITORY The Top End buzzes with a festive vibe across the Dry Season. Do like explorer John McDouall Stuart and follow his namesake highway from Darwin to Katherine to discover Top End regions alive with activity this month!

Beginning with the Merrepen Arts and Sports Festival from the 31st of May until the 2nd of June in the attractive Daly River community of Nauiyu. In its 26th year, the festival showcases the exquisite indigenous visual arts of the region. Saturday and Sunday is your chance to buy art with the festival offering a unique opportunity to purchase decorative Merrepen artworks at community prices. There’s plenty of accommodation locally, so stay the weekend and stick around for the concert with Wendy Matthews, Tracey Bunn, the Emu Sisters and Traditional Dancers on Saturday night. The Adelaide River Races on Saturday the 1st of June is a real country race meeting held on the Top End’s only grass track! Shady grounds with a seven race program, fashion on the field, TAB and bookie facilities on site make this an event on the racing calendar not to be missed. Buses are available from Darwin or make it a longer trip and explore some of the historic attractions in the region, because the fun doesn’t stop there! The following weekend, the Adelaide River Talent Quest brings talent from all over the Territory and interstate. From bush ballads to country rock, it’s all there and the talent quest concludes as the sun sets with a concert that has the showgrounds rocking! Continue the weekend with the Adelaide River Show and join in the thrill of a rodeo, camp draft and rural show. You’ll be in awe as you watch competitors master cattle, in less than 45 seconds each, in the camp draft.

Further down the Stuart Highway the annual Barunga Festival is held in this remote Aboriginal community, via Katherine, over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend from the 7th to the 10th, and is one of the major and longest-running indigenous community festivals in the Top End. Visitors can camp in the community during the alcohol-free festival and interact with residents who will share their stories and culture. This year is shaping up to be an incredible festival with headliners Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu and John Butler of the John Butler Trio. Katherine’s Fringe Festival from the 21st to the 22nd will feature a newly produced multimedia performance ‘Gorrdondolmi’ - the story of the Rainbow Serpent written, produced and performed by Katherine artists. There will be stacks of free street performances, dance and music as well as a film feature and writers’ festival showcasing some the Territory’s best. Rounding up this jam packed month of activities along the Stuart Highway, the Pine Creek Goldrush Festival from the 27th to the 1st of July will take you back in time. Gold is not the only attraction however, with a damper-making competition, nugget hunt, ‘Golden Oldies’ rugby game and much more. Accommodation in Pine Creek is limited, so be prepared to camp or give us a call and we will assist you in finding a place to lay your head.

Over the years we have seen road rage increase dramatically. It was very evident whilst I was living in Sydney, and I have not noticed it to the same extent in Darwin probably due to the lesser amount of people on the roads however it still does occur. A lovely friend of mine was spat on in the face by a driver at a set of lights for driving too slowly and apparently slowing him down (meanwhile she had a screaming baby in the back seat, and a four year old who kept undoing their seatbelt – needless to say she was a little distracted!). The potential of road rage to escalate into an ugly situation quickly is high, and there is the risk of something simple like starting off at the lights too slowly turning into violence. How can something seemingly so trivial trigger people into violence? Road rage is simply an outlet for societies built up stress. This frustration may come from work, relationships or finances. An incident on the road can often be, as they say, the straw that broke the camel’s back. If you find you are either the victim or perpetrator of road rage, here are some simple tips to overcome road rage incidents: How do you overcome road rage incidents? 1) Be compassionate and manage your emotional state – you can’t control another person’s state of mind, however you have full responsibility of your emotions. For all you know, the person in the other car may be driving inappropriately because they have just experienced the loss of a loved one – who knows what their situation is!

2) Avoid reacting – whether you are in the wrong or right avoid staring, gestures or honking. Ignore the other vehicle. You need to put your ego to the side and not react as this may escalate emotions – as emotion increases, logic decreases. 3) Move on – If you are in or outside of your car leave the incident and move on to your next destination provided all is safe to do so. 4) Stay in your car – if you are already in your car you are safer to stay in the car. If you need to wind your window down to talk only do so an inch or better still move on. If you are outside your car get in promptly. Above all I highly recommend learning some basic self-defence skills and practice implementing them so that you can use them if the need arises. Krav Maga is a modern day realitybased self-defense system. Adam is the founder of Krav Maga Darwin. For more information, visit www.kravmagadarwin.com.au.

Experience matters. Be selective with your choice of agent and the difference it makes to the success of your end result will astound you.”

Wharf One Appointment Sterling Management Services has recently been appointed to manage one of Darwin’s premier residential, commercial and retail precincts – the Wharf 1 Complex at Darwin’s waterfront precinct. Phil Doyle and the team at Sterling Management Services are excited and understandably proud of their appointment.

Body Corporate committees across all tiers of the Wharf 1 Corporation agreed to install Sterling Management Services as their managers, which became effective on the 1st April. Phil Doyle is understandably delighted with this appointment. “Marketplace recognition for providing a first class, fast response service is what convinced the Waterfront Wharf 1 committees that they should move to us”. Over the last few years, Darwin has seen a dramatic increase in the number of high-rise residential properties. The latest research from the Real Estate Institute of Australia has recorded that Darwin city has the fastest growing unit market in percentage terms in all of Australia. There is a unique mix of owners and residents, representing a wide variety of needs and objectives, ranging from owner-occupiers, to investors, to long and short term tenancies. This diverse stakeholder/representative base creates challenges for Body Corporate committees, managers, Chairpersons and building caretakers. Whether you are an investor or an owner-occupier, a well-managed building is a major consideration which may make all the difference to whether your return on investment (ROI) is maximised; or not. New legislation and regulations place obligations

on committees and their managers, which carry large fines and possible jail terms for noncompliance. Today a chairperson of a large residential high rise could find himself responsible for an asset in some cases worth in excess of $100 million. Hence, prudent governance and associated management is essential. As a potential apartment owner, think about what you want to achieve. As an owner occupier you want to be able to live in the environment that suits your lifestyle. Good neighbours and a group of owners who can largely agree on house rules, complimented with astute, suitably skilled management, provide the basis for maximising your quality of life and desired return on investment. As an investor your primary concern is a steady rental income with good potential for capital growth. This can be achieved by ensuring the property is constantly maintained to attract high-calibre tenants who are prepared to pay commensurate rental. Sterling Management Services specialises in providing a first class, responsive service to people living the high life whether it is on the harbour foreshore at the Waterfront, up on the Esplanade at One30 or in nearby Bayview Marina Estate.

It is well and truly the Dry Season now and the perfect time for gardening in Darwin. Community gardening is a worldwide trend that has certainly caught on and is here to stay, thanks to a number of passionate and dedicated people.

www.solarsunwerx.com.au

As our city grows and develops making land even more scarce and valuable, enabling residents in higher density areas access to gardens can be an integral part to the community’s healthy social fabric. With some creative thought developers and body corporates of unit blocks or townhouse complexes can easily integrate a little space for veggies, herbs, & flowers within a sunny common area. Possibly near a pool, car park, along the side of a hot concrete walkway, perhaps even on the rooftop of a development. If in doubt of the health of the soil, tests can determine possible soil contamination. Raised planting beds can also facilitate in providing healthy soil. Academic studies have demonstrated the many health benefits of community gardening including: improved nutrition and better access to fresh wholesome food, increased physical activity, and enhanced metal health. Benefits are seen in people from all parts of the socio-economic spectrum, yet particularly those with lower incomes. When populations rise especially in transient cities, people can lose the ability and inclination to positively relate. Local community gardens can sometimes be a simple avenue to helping people that might otherwise feel isolated...feel connected. Neighbours might begin to communicate when they perhaps previously haven’t simply by commenting that the bananas are ripe or that they recently made a great pesto with some of the fresh basil. Social engagement can naturally occur even between neighbours who may have barriers to communication such as speaking different languages, disabilities, or simply feeling insecure or timid by using gestures and/or sharing food and recipes. For some inspiration check out the Tropical Garden Spectacular at the George Brown Botanical Gardens this June, the fantastic community garden plots in local neighbourhoods and some primary schools, and the also the Open Gardens that run most week-ends at various homes around Darwin.

HOUSE PRICE BUBBLE

nothing but Inflated Talk

Australia continues to grapple with the incessant hyping up of a fictitious housing bubble. Such talk is detrimental to consumer confidence and harmful to the wider economy. The most recent update on consumer confidence showed a sharp decline. There are a myriad of reasons for this situation, not the least of which is global uncertainty and angst about a carbon tax at home. However, the endless bleating about a non-existent housing bubble in Australia certainly isn’t helping.

June 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

Let’s be clear about it, Australia is NOT facing a house price bubble. Furthermore, those who control the flow of money agree there is no bubble. The Reserve Bank of Australia does not subscribe to the bubble view, nor does Treasury. Rather than talking about bubbles, we should be talking about housing shortages and what we can do to fix them. The Northern Territory knows all about this situation - the level of new home building has been running substantially below underlying demographic demand for an extended period of time. As a nation we need to be engaging in discussions about how we can best meet growing demand from population growth? How we can improve affordability – both for renters and those looking to enter the housing market? Where can we get the necessary funding needed to satisfy residential infrastructure requirements? Those claiming that Australia’s housing market could go the same way as the US have no understanding of reality. Australia’s market is vastly different to the US. We have a strong banking system, an unemployment rate almost half of the US, full recourse housing loans, and very low default rates. A home is the largest asset most Australians will ever own and as such the topic of house prices naturally elicits emotive discussion. It is fair and reasonable to inform Australian home owners that the exceptionally strong house price growth of 2009 (and for much of

the last decade for that matter), will not be repeated any time soon and that a period of relatively stable house prices is likely to ensue in the short term although we are seeing signs of much stronger demand in some areas including the territory. This is particularly so in the purchase of new apartements.. It is unfair and unreasonable to scare Australian households with fanciful, headline grabbing stories of a bubble that will become a crash, when such conjecture doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. Talk of a bubble is very unhelpful at a time when we require more investment in housing, especially affordable housing. The faster the fanciful storytellers put their wands back in their castles, the faster the outlook for new home building will improve.

Fruit Trees IN POTS Growing fruit trees in pots allows you to have them in paved areas and unlikely garden spaces. To grow a decent, fruit bearing tree, it is recommended that you use a pot at least 40cm or larger in size, depending on the size the tree is likely to be when it reaches maturity.

Estelle Cornell Managing Director – Allora Gardens President - BNI Top End Chapter Stuart Highway Berrimah NT 0828 Ph: (08) 8984 4006 www.alloragardensnursery.com.au

A pot this size can be difficult to move once it contains potting mix, so it’s best to carefully consider the position of your tree before potting it up. Fruit trees need good levels of sunlight to perform well and bear fruit, so position your tree where it will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight every day. Any plants grown in pots will be more vulnerable to dry-out than plants grown in the ground. They will also be more susceptible to extremes of temperature. Large pots can also have problems with drainage and waterlogging if the wrong type of potting mix is used. Unlike plants grown in the ground which can access water and nutrients from over considerable distances, plants grown in pots will be completely dependent on the potting mix for all their nutritional needs. This means a quality potting mix is vital, and is a wise investment in insuring the success of your tree. High quality potting mixes like premium Amgrow or Searles Pots & Tubs are highly recommended. While established fruit trees in the ground should only need watering four times a week during hot, dry weather, the same trees grown in pots will need to be watered five times a week or more in similar circumstances. While they’re

still establishing, potted fruit trees will need watering at least once a day in hot, dry conditions. Even at cooler times of the year, potted trees will need more watering than those in the ground. This extra watering can cause leaching of nutrients from the potting mix, which means it is also necessary to feed plants more regularly. Apply Kickalong Fruit & Flower - an excellent organic plant food or osmocote. Fertilise citrus trees while fruit is forming to ensure bountiful crops later on. Keep trees well mulched, water them deeply and regularly and apply magnesium and trace elements. Yellowing older leaves can mean magnesium deficiency, in which case a dose of Epson salts could help save your crop. Fruit trees that don’t grow too big or too fast are the best candidates for growing in pots. Some good choices are the dwarf lemon tree, grafted dwarf oranges, Kaffir lime, dwarf pomegranate, blueberries, feijoa, Brazilian cherry and strawberry guava. Pest to watch out for; Scale, mealybug, citrus leaf miner and fruit fly. Potted fruit trees can benefit from an annual pruning to make sure they stay compact….. Until next time, Happy Harvest…….

Celebrating T

years

You k n ha

Firstly, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the support and encouragement of our customers, local partners and the Darwin community as we mark this milestone. Every day we live up to a promise we made in 2008 – to establish Darwin as a world-class business events destination and bring continuing economic benefits to the Territory. It has been a gratifying and successful endeavor as we have grown into a mutli-awarded, international standard venue and operation. Over the past five years we’ve hosted over 1,000 events bringing nearly 67,000 national and international visitors to Darwin and generating an estimated $230 million in economic benefit. We’ve partnered with many local companies, helping them grow their business – from conference organisers to exhibition hire, hotels, restaurants, car hire operators, and entertainment companies. In the process, we’ve changed the way Darwin is viewed as a business event destination in every conceivable way. Please join us in making the next 5 years even more exciting and rewarding with your continued patronage and support.
