Wagaman Primary School celebrates its 40th birthday this year and as far as history goes, it has quite a story to tell. The school was opened in February 1973, with hundreds of students in attendance, as the upper primary wing was used to house the students from the new school being built nearby – Casuarina High. At the end of term one, 267 high school students left Wagaman and by August 1973, Wagaman had over 300 primary school students enrolled.

The Tribes process has been critical to the success of the school. It focuses on building a culture of inclusion, belonging, and cooperation. It encourages values of Mutual Respect, Participation, Appreciation and Personal Best. Over a quarter of the students are Indigenous and the school celebrates Asian and Greek cultures, to name a few, in its community. Its multicultural heart is one of the most celebrated aspects of the school. KidsMatter is a mental health initiative designed to strengthen wellbeing and resilience in primary school students across the nation. C A S UA R I NA SENIOR COLLEGE 2013 is a big year for Casuarina Senior College as they celebrate 40 years of providing continuous high quality education. program with the focus being in the Medicine and Health Science areas. Today Casuarina Senior College supports a whole range of students, encouraging them to achieve their very best in whichever future direction they choose. The school caters not just to academic career choices but also supports vocational, sporting and creative career paths, truly reflecting the changing face of this generation of school leavers. Not only will the school celebrate its 40th birthday this year, but it also launches its exciting new brand. As the school has evolved over the past 4 decades, different logos were developed to reflect its direction. The new logo features a stylized image of the Casuarina tree, the branches symbolizing pathways and growth. The uniforms will change in line with this and to ensure a fresh approach, the college is giving the students the opportunity to redesign their college shirt and give it a new more contemporary look. Their 40th birthday milestone will be celebrated in June this year at the CSC Community day. Principal Lyn Elphinstone says the highlight of the day will be revealing the contents of the time capsule. “It’s been buried for almost 3 decades, and encased in concrete in the garden near the original flagpole. It will be opened prior to the event and the contents cleaned up, ready for display. Another time capsule will be buried to replace it. We welcome all past, present and future members of our school to come and celebrate with us.”

There is also of course plenty of entertainment in store for all the family. Winner of MasterChef Australia 2012 Andy Allen will be cooking up a storm with some great demonstrations for the crowd. Local stylists will be showcasing their skills at the Wella Hair Show, and a special guest judge will be jetting in to judge the competition. Watch this space! The screams will be heard in Kakadu as Elmo and Cookie Monster work the crowd and Humphrey B. Bear, Batman and Catwoman will be there for those grown ups who are still kids at heart. The team from Territory Wildlife Park will have some live critters on hand and the RSCPA will be finding new homes for cats and dogs. Plus live Irish dancers, pole dancing and a fashion parade, your biggest decision will be what to do first! There are still some exhibitor spaces left but they are selling fast so get in quick and reserve your space for the chance to buy, sell or launch whatever your passion is to the Darwin public this June at the DarwinLife Mega Expo. 9am to 5pm Saturday 1st June and 9am to 4pm Sunday 2nd June.

BEING Although many of us wait until we are doubled over in pain to make a pilgrimage to the chiropractor, Tony and Nikki Rudd have a much bigger vision for clients attending their brand new clinic ‘Free Being’. The philosophy of the practice is simple and in fact gave birth to its name. Tony and Nikki’s approach to life is based in a belief that everybody has the right and the potential to freedom – that by removing blockages and interferences, we can achieve both physical and intellectual freedom: we can all be ‘Free Beings’.
This belief has never been more evident for

Wella PROFESSIONALS DARWINLIFE MEGA EXPO HAIR SHOW
Wella Professionals and DarwinLife Mega Expo are proud to host the 2013 Hair Show at this year’s expo at Darwin Convention Centre. We spoke to the NT Representative for Wella Professionals - Tania Hlad - to get the inside scoop on what the crowd can expect from this year’s show. What will the judges be looking for from this year’s hair show entrants? Well-executed hair styling, fashion forward styles and polished presentation from head to toe. What advice can you give to the entrants? The complete look is just as important as the hair so entrants should consider all elements: hair, model, makeup and clothes styling. What approach do you want entrants take this year? Last year the focus was really on the hair, but we want it to be more of an event this year. Hair styling should be flawless but we also want to see how hair is complemented by, or finishes off a person’s overall style. We encourage the stylist to really create and total look and the judging will really be about the complete head to toe presentation. Last year’s event was a great success, can people expect the same level of entertainment this year? We expect there to be a flow on into the
hair show from Fashion Week in May. A lot of stylists from Fashion Week will be assisting the hair show entrants so it’s going to a totally different experience. Last year’s event was so popular with standing room only, but this year we want it to be even bigger and better with more entrants and a much more dynamic approach. This is the third year and it has really grown. This year will blow everyone’s mind. I have seen some of the entrants already and they are a really artistic and creative group. Are there any new and exciting products from Wella can we look forward to seeing? Entrants will all be using Wella products in the competition, and this is a great opportunity to see the new Illumina products in action. Using microlight technology, the Illumina range are high quality colour products that add a new dimension to colour, with a clarity that is unmatched as they reflect light, giving greater shine and intense volume of colour. The Government House Foundation is a group that was founded in 1998 to preserve and promote the heritage of the Oldest European building in the Northern Territory, Government House. The House was originally developed in 1870 by Captain William Bloomfield Douglas who was the second Government resident in the Northern Territory. The House was first occupied in 1971 and since that time it has been the home of successive Government Residents and Administrators. The style of the House reflected European design for the Tropics being a standard pattern for a Bungalow with ten rooms and a veranda all around. The House has endured destructive infestations of termites, rowdy demonstrations, major cyclones and earthquakes, bombing raids and remains today as one of the most attractive buildings in Darwin. The Government House Foundation was formed to conserve and enhance Government House and to encourage public interest in this House. The Government House Foundation has
done this successfully via the purchase of furniture, carpets, artwork and development of work in the House grounds, such as the recently completed water feature along Hughes Avenue. Sponsorship of open days to the House, promotion of public education and the role of the Administrator. Additional to the above sponsorship of the Senior Territorian Art Competition are other projects carried out by the Foundation to name only a few. One of the main events the Foundation supports each year is a Gala Ball in the grounds of Government House under the Territory sky which is attended by approximately 300 people. The Ball this year is to be held on the 24th of May and will host the newly appointed Administrator Her Honour Sally Thomas and newly elected Government House Foundation Chairperson Keith Savage. The night we believe is one of the first major events on the NT Calender to herald in the Dry Season and promises to be a spectacular evening of music and dancing while enjoying the ambience of Government House and its settings.

Entertainment Espresso History Vespa Gioia Benvenuti Tombola Vino Community Family Gelati Art
This month the Italian community comes together to celebrate the ‘sweet life’ here in Darwin with a festival of food, drinks, art, culture and sparkling entertainment. The festival brings together Italian families, community groups, schools, businesses and entertainers to showcase the passion and colour of Italy. Italians have been part of our cultural landscape since the 1800’s when Catholic priest Father Angelo Bernardo Confalonieri landed here in 1846 and was the first missionary in the NT. By 1921 there were 11 Italians living in the Northern Territory many of whom lived in the Alice. In 1947 only 4 Italians were living in Darwin. How times have changed. Today the Darwin Italian community is a vibrant one with a strong group of families who have been here since mid last century. Now it seems more and more Italians are deciding to make Darwin their home. The word must be out - where else in Australia would you want to live? Now it’s time to celebrate. The Italian Festival Association was formed with the express purpose of creating an exciting event to showcase Italian culture here in Darwin and the Italian Festival was born. As a multicultural city, we love to embrace our diversity and the Italian Festival will do just that. The Association chairman Ross Finocchiaro says that the festival hopes to be one of the most celebrated multicultural community events in Darwin. “The festival is all about bringing together the wider community to celebrate family, friends, the Italian culture and its renowned traditions”, he said. Italian culture is all about food, family and sitting down to a table full of delicious fare and Darwin will not be disappointed. Local restaurants and the Italian community have come together to create a tantalising array of dishes. From perfect pasta, pizza and salads to meatballs, seafood, Italian Sausages and more, Darwin will have it’s fill. Of course what’s an Italian meal without traditional sweets, perfect coffee and sweet gelati? Don’t worry it’s all at the festival. Of course, the Italian beverages will be flowing. What a great festival needs is big personalities and fabulous
entertainment. The official MC for the event is global Italian sensation Joe Avati. Avati is the world’s best selling bilingual comedian and has a massive cult following around the globe. The headline act for the festival is the Rat Pack style 5 piece ‘Dean Martini Show’. Lead singer David Cotter is a seasoned professional, as suave and debonair as the original Deano. Local performers and personalities have also jumped onboard: Amanda Pernechele Southern Cross Television’s marketing manager is the Festival’s official ambassador while Lisa and Natalie Pellegrino bring their infectious blend of song and sass to the stage. It helps that all these ‘bellas’ are Italian! The Neo, known for their crazy mix of soul, funk, rock and cabaret are going all Italiano for the night and this, we’ve got to see! Vox Crocs, Italian Idol, Tarantella dancers, schools and an Italian inspired fashion parade are just some of the highlights on stage. A singing ensemble made up of Italian ladies led by Nora Lewis will delight us with songs of Italy. Rehearsals are a joy so the performance will definitely be a memorable one. Roving performers, food demonstrations, art exhibitions, Italian cars and motorbikes and a photographic history of Darwin’s Italian community will be on display. Combine this with children’s games and activities and you have a festival to remember. But wait theres more... My Kitchen Rules will be there holding auditions for the next series. You never know, you could be the first Territorian couple to grace the screen, so get down to the festival. Here’s a hint - if you check out the food demonstrations first you may just get some italian inspiration to wow the judges with. We all know Darwin loves a good party and this one’s going to be big. Welcome to the La Dolce Vita - the Sweet Life - Darwin style!

Capital and country is the National Gallery of Australia’s first major exhibition to focus on the parallel stories of Federation landscape painting, alongside the art produced by expatriate Australians living in Europe artistic centres, seeking education and exposure in the ‘old world’ during the Edwardian era in England and the last heady days of the Belle Epoque in France. Well-known and loved works in the national collection by major Australian painters such as Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Frederick McCubbin, George W. Lambert and Hans Heysen, are brought to light in new ways alongside lesserknown images by Florence Fuller, Godfrey
Rivers, Elioth Gruner and Richard Hayley-Lever. Ranging from sunlit groves of gum trees that convey the Australian nation’s enthusiastic embrace of their own landscape, to sophisticated portraits and figure paintings painted in the bohemian enclaves of Paris and London, the works in Capital and country promise to surprise and delight. Capital and country is on display at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory from 4 May until 29 September 2013.

There’s an amazing range of shows on stage this May – topped by a one-night only performance by four legends of Aussie rock. Daryl Braithwaite, Joe Camilleri, James Reyne and Ross Wilson will deliver an unforgettable night when they bring their national Apia ‘Time of My Life Tour’ to Darwin on Tuesday 21 May. They’ve racked up millions of album sales, Top 20 hits and membership in the Aria Hall of Fame. Song such as The Horses, One Summer, Chained to the Wheel, The Boys Light Up, and Hammerhead have defined Aussie music for four decades In ‘Time of My Life’, they’ll each perform their most memorable singles before joining together for a huge finale. On Saturday 18 May, the internationally acclaimed Sydney Dance Company will deliver their pulsing and powerful performance “2 One Another”. The dancers perform against the backdrop of a specially created LED screen of pixelated lights and an electronic-baroque soundtrack. They explore the gestures, actions and relationships that define the way we interact with each other.
This is modern dance at its peak. Go behind the closed doors of suburbia with leading Australian stage actress Amanda Muggleton in her one-woman show, “The Book Club”. Amanda plays Deborah, who is swept up in her imagination of long romantic lunches and hotel rendezvous. Then a famous author joins Deborah’s book club for a study session, and her life is transformed into the stuff of erotic fiction. The Book Club is showing on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May. Meet Amanda Muggleton at the post-show event. Get your comedy fix at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow. Hilarious comedians including Colin Lane of Lano and Woodley are road-tripping around Australia – they’ll be on stage in Darwin on Sunday 26 May. But even more promising is CommSec’s prediction earlier this year that the Territory has the ‘potential to overtake Western Australia at the top of the leader-board’**. With this in mind, we speak to Brian O’Gallagher, the Executive Director of the Territory Government’s Asian Engagement, Trade and Investment Division, about the opportunities ahead.
What is underpinning the Territory’s record growth? The basic makeup of the Territory economy hasn’t changed, but some sectors, such as oil, gas and LNG, are making a much bigger contribution than they have in recent years. Then there are the flow-on effects. Big projects, such as the Ichthys LNG project, create hundreds of additional jobs. And due to our relatively small population, much of that additional labour comes from outside the NT. Some of our local developers have anticipated the arrival of that labour and have already invested building new properties which has injected even more money into the local construction industry. And then when the workers arrive, whether they are blue collar or white collar they will spend a good percentage of their disposable income here in the NT – and that will be a positive influence on the retail, hospitality, services and the tourism industry. Apart from the multi-billion Ichthys gas project, what other developments are happening across the Territory? If we start in Central Australia, the exploration industry is quite active looking for minerals, oil and gas, and we are optimistic that this will lead to additional operating mines in the area in the medium term. In the Barkly region the potential growth in the mining industry is very similar to Central Australia, albeit with different mineral deposits at stake. People may not fully realise how important Tennant Creek is geographically to the Territory, which is why the new Territory Government is re-visiting the potential rail and now gas pipeline links to Mt Isa. The Katherine and Douglas-Daly region have a mix of future investment opportunities. Building on the 56
May 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine
existing gold mining operations, plus the new iron ore precinct in the Roper District and the potential to expand horticulture and forestry, the future for Katherine is bright. And then, up in Darwin, well let’s just say there is plenty of activity happening around the Port focused on oil, gas and minerals, serious commitments to expanding retail at Casuarina and Palmerston, as well as additional apartments and home construction in the CBD and throughout greater Darwin. Industrial and commercial building is going from strength to strength too. What is the Territory Government doing to support this growth and encourage investment? Government is focused on three things. First, Government is making it easier for Territorians to re-invest and grow their existing businesses. Government pays attention to the challenges faced by existing businesses and where we can we act to improve things – reduce red tape, streamline approval processes, encourage industry to fill gaps in industry capabilities, that sort of thing. Second, Government is making sure we convey the compelling economic and investment story about the NT to the right people both nationally and internationally. These are people who want to invest early, don’t mind taking some risks, and who are attracted to a potential role developing some of the remaining frontier areas of Australia. Sometimes they approach us; sometimes we approach them. Thirdly, Government is making sure, through direct meetings with the leading banks and others, that the finance industry also understands and appreciates the investment opportunity in the Territory. It’s one thing for a company to be convinced about an investment
right here in the NT, but that can quickly be brought to a halt if that enthusiasm is not shared by other investors or the banks. How is this investment and growth benefiting everyday Territorians? Many visitors to the NT are reporting a real buzz about the place, especially business travellers that have been coming up periodically over the last few years. At a minimum, many people recognise that there are existing opportunities arising for them and their families. If you are a property owner your investment has probably made you a little wealthier than you were 12 months ago courtesy of the rise in house prices. The combination of increased confidence and increased wealth has already showed up in increased spending by some households – just talk to the car dealers and electronics retailers if you want some examples. The Territory Government is also being proactive in helping businesses and employees plan for workforce development, and is doing what it can to expand the range of economic choices available to Territorians. On that note, I recently had the pleasure of attending a graduation ceremony at the Larrakia Trade Training Centre where more than 30 local people ranging from about the age of 17 to 50 qualified to participate in the construction and steel fixing industry – with many of these now destined to be employed on the Ichthys LNG project. This is a great outcome for the individuals concerned, their families and the Territory as a whole.

As a result of our small population base and our even smaller workforce, recruitment is an ongoing requirement of any business in the Territory. AIM Excellence Awards Nominations Now Open
Continuing to Recognise
Excellence Nominations are now open for the 2013 Australian Institute of Management (AIM) Excellence Awards, Australia's only awards program recognising the contributions and capabilities of individual managers. The awards program has a proud history in Queensland and the Northern Territory, and has undergone some exciting changes in 2013.
PAYING TRIBUTE
volunteers TO OUR
National Volunteer Week: 13 - 19 May - is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia. This year’s theme is “Thanks A Million” and the week provides an opportunity to highlight the exceptional role volunteers play in our communities, and to say thank you to the more than 6 million Australians who volunteer.
Do you know someone who excels in a management role, and is resourceful, innovative and inspirational? If so, nominate them in one of five categories: Professional Manager – Private Sector, Professional Manager – Public Sector, Young Manager, Owner Manager and Not-for-Profit Manager. The robust awards process connects a wide range of business leaders and professionals as finalists, judges, sponsors and supporters, representing a fantastic opportunity to expand your network. And to top it all off, the AIM Excellence Awards are completely free of charge to all participants. Be a part of the awards in 2013 - nominate online at www.aimawards.com.au or call 1300 882 895.
The week also provides a national focus for organisations wanting to recruit volunteers, so I commend the Chief Minister and the NT Government in recognising and promoting volunteering in the Territory through the 2013 Northern Territory Volunteer Awards. Winners of the Awards will be announced by the Chief Minister in partnership with Volunteering SA&NT coinciding with National Volunteer Week. Volunteers are essential to society, and many charities would struggle to survive without their support. Whether volunteering in environmental management; assisting to make our world a more peaceful and just place by helping refugees; educating communities about poverty; or hearing children read and teaching or sharing lifelong skills … volunteers are vital in every part of our society.
In a time-poor world, volunteers bring support and encouragement to someone else’s day, making it a little more bearable because they have taken the time to care and help others in need. Volunteers can also gain personal satisfaction through a contribution to society, make new friends and networks, use and develop skills and become more active. Whatever the reason for volunteering, the spirit of volunteering can lead to a much richer and fulfilling life. Most volunteers do not ask for accolades as they give their time generously, without any expectation of reward. However, during National Volunteer Week we should reflect on the way volunteers are changing the world for others and for our future generations, as their contribution is truly priceless. For more information on how you can volunteer, go to www.volunteeringsa-nt. org.au

FINZ
Finz Restaurant – the jewel in the crown at Darwin Mantra on the Esplanade; winner of Deluxe Accommodation for the Brolga Awards in Darwin 20l2.
Ernie Brown, Manager of Finz and former executive chef has created a menu to suit all tastes. It contains traditional and contemporary fare, with fresh, Asian and Pilipino twists, giving diners a truly memorable dining experience at exceptionally reasonable prices. Our entrée of Twice Cooked Pork Belly ($18.00) was such a dish. Sweet succulent scallops, served on moist, tender cubes of pork with a crispy crackle; together with a pea puree and chilli caramel sauce. Heaven! Just as exciting; but a lighter option was the Peri Peri Chicken Salad ($18.00) A tangy delicate Asian herb salad, with peri peri marinated tender chicken pieces, served with a capsicum coulis and lime yoghurt. Local Moreton Bay Bugs ($34.00) served with delicious garlic, chilli and ginger butter and jasmine rice were cooked to perfection: fresh, sweet, tender morsels of bug tails in a wonderful sauce.
Lamb shanks are always a winner. This was no exception. Lemon Grass & Kaffir Lime Infused Lamb Shank ($24.00). Ernie has brought his Pilipino heritage to this traditional dish. It has those deep rich flavours expected of an excellent lamb shank; but with a twist – the tangy and zesty flavours of lemon grass and kaffir lime. Served with mashed potatoes and broccoli. This course is worth a visit to Finz in itself. A stunner. Desserts. ($13.00) Ernie’s Crème Caramel again has a Pilipino influence and it is delicious. It is served with a lychee and strawberry salad and peanut praline. Yum! The Cassata is another dish out of the box. A rich and creamy triple layer ice cream of ube ( purple yam), mango and pandan leaf extract. Refreshing, yet rich and creamy. Ernie, as executive chef introduced some exciting new flavours and dishes to Finz and now as the Manger he has taken it to a new level of excellence. 5 Stars.

PAVONIA PLACE fine dining in Nightcliff There’s a new restaurant that I’ve been hearing lots about and that would be Pavonia Place in Nightcliff with their modern Australian menu. Our entrees of homemade dips and calamari were both fantastic - entrees have never tasted any better. For my m ain I select the locally sourced 400 gram eye fillet steak with mushroom sauce. Big, fat and chunky, I couldn’t wait to see how it looked on the inside. The first cut went through amazingly easy – I swear a spoon would have done as good a job as a steak knife and the taste absolutely divine. My wife had the chicken breast polenta crusted schnitzel topped with Napoli sauce and mozzarella. The polenta crust provides a beautiful crunch and adds tiny bite I managed to sneak was all I was had as the rest was polished off very quickly. The faster she eats, the better the score – she broke the lap record on this occasion. The desert looked interesting but we had no room left to fit it, I guess the lemongrass panna cotta and the stunning meringue will have to wait until next time to party in my mouth. Overall I was quite impressed with Pavonia Place. The prices are on the higher end of town but I think it’s certainly justified given the level of food, service and presentation. It’s definitely a place to take your partner for a romantic date or if you just want a wonderful meal in general. For more food reviews, check out our website at www.darwinfoodies.com

NOTHING FISHY ABOUT THE
BARRAMUNDI
Late last month you may have seen or heard stories from your mates or media circulating about elevated mercery levels in fish catch from the Daly River catchment, the source being generated from the train derailment into Edith falls and the uncontrolled discharge from the Mount Todd Mine in 2011. I can assure you that the levels are well below The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (FSANZ). Seafood that is sold commercially is required to be within a limit of 1mg of mercury per kilogram; these very conservative limits are set based on the best available information by FSANZ.. The average concentration found in a common species caught in that area; including the iconic barramundi was approximately 0.15mg/kg. Samples were independently tested and can confirm that the fish caught is safe to eat. Overall the results represent is a good outcome for the Daly River Barramundi Fishery. There is no reason for locals or visitors to be concerned about the health of the fishery or the fish in it. We probably all need to eat more fish to meet the recommended 3 meals of seafood a week for healthy diets so it's great to see again we can be confident in locally caught seafood. So let us get back to some of the more important stuff, how to eat that iconic barramundi. I'm often not that adventurous with my seafood as I like nothing more than a simple skin on fillet cooked well, BBQ or shallow fried. However; just last week I was invited for a meal of seafood paella. The meal was beautifully presented with local prawns, bugs, clams and mussels. The standout in the meal however was the fish - NT barra. Get yourself a recipe and try it for yourself, I would suggest you don't have friends over else you will be cooking every week! There is a lot to learn about the Northern Territory seafood industry and the people that bring your seafood to your plate; read their stories by visiting www.supportntcaught. And most important of all seafood consumers in the Territory informed choices can be easily made, as all imported seafood is to be labelled. If you are looking for locally caught seafood, just look out for “Support NT Caught. Find us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/supportntcaught.

The
Stakes are High: Your Guide to Northern Territory
Fashion Week
The Style stakes have been taken up a notch this Dry Season as the fashionable and the fashion conscious prepare for Northern Territory Fashion Week. Fashion Week is the first major style event of Darwin’s Dry season calendar and will be held from the 22nd25th May. The week includes 2 glamorous runway shows, at the Schweppes Pavilion, Darwin Turf Club, a high end milliner’s lunch at Viva La Vida and a series of networking events just for the Fashion industry. “There is an incredibly strong field of talent among the designers featuring both new and more established labels, said Director Mehali Tsangaris. “ These designers are testament to the incredible richness and wonder that is Territory born and bred fashion and will light up the runway on the 24th May”, continued Mr Tsangaris. Also gracing the runway in the retailers’ showcase on the 25th May will be a feast of Territory retailers, featuring an incredible range of looks from daywear to evening wear, resortwear to streetwear. “ Whatever the occasion, Territory Retailers have got it all” said Gaynor Beck from the Darwin retailers’ association. “This year’s retailers showcase will show Territory fashionistas that they don’t need to look outside the Territory for beautiful ready to wear garments and highly sought after brands from leading national and international design houses. Thanks to the invaluable support of funding from the Northern Territory Government, the Darwin Retailer’s Association is proud to partner with Northern Territory Fashion Week. This event will drive real economic benefit to our hard working retailers,” said Ms Beck. And our incredibly talented milliners will not be forgotten either, with a high end milliner’s showcase held at Viva La Vida, featuring an exclusive and intimate showing of the Territory’s best, just in time for race season. “Northern Territory Fashion Week has truly embraced the Territory Fashion industry. We’re representing designers, retailers, models and even milliners, and through partnering with both the Northern Territory Government and local Territory businesses, we’re driving real economic benefit and building capacity of the Industry. It’s an exciting time for Territory Fashion,” said Director Mehali Tsangaris.

on Knuckey
You may have noticed some changes over the last two years in Splash on Knuckey (formerly Hot Swimwear). It’s been just over two years since the business changed hands and what a whirlwind it's been, in that time there have been many changes. We have given the store a re-vamp, changed the name and introduced some new swimwear labels that weren’t currently available in Darwin such as Isola by Megan Gale and Tigerlily. We are also now the exclusive stockists of Funkita and Funky Trunks.
After listening to the women in Darwin and realising how many larger busts there are out there it was only a matter of time before we progressed into lingerie as they seem to go hand in hand, evident by the fact that some suppliers also produce lingerie along side of swimwear. In the Fashion industry it is important to keep re-inventing ourselves, giving ourselves a point of difference and staying competitive in a market where traditional retail outlets are losing customers to the on-line world of shopping. While it is easy to sit in the comfort of your home and shop by mouse and credit card, nothing can replace the experience of feeling beautiful fabrics
and trying on the garments before purchasing. Visitors to Darwin are always amazed when they come into the store at how many well known brands they find and come back to shop every time they are in Darwin. Joy, Juliette and staff are very excited to be part of NT Fashion Week and welcome the opportunity to show our labels to the Darwin fashionistas!

Introducing... Tattfree vs Laser
What is the process?
> L aser only addresses a small amount of pigment colours.
> T he tattooed areas are lightly abraded with a special handpiece similar to the one used in your original tattoo session.
Before
> T he process is virtually painless and if you have a low pain tolerance a topical anaesthetic can be applied to minimise discomfort.
Immediately after 1st treatment
> T attfree tattoo removal avoids these potential risks and addresses all pigment colours, generally in fewer treatments and at a substantially lower cost.
How does it work? > W e use the exclusive Tattfree tattoo removal system. > T his process will take a series of treatments depending on the size of the tattoo. > F or the average size tattoo you will need approximately 4 treatments. > T he treatments are designed to remove the pigmented areas of your tattoo.
> T reatment times are approximately 30 minutes, during which small circles are created over the surface of your tattoo.
one week after 1st treatment
> W e leave small spaces in between the circles which will be treated in subsequent sessions. The spacing strategy helps with the healing process and minimises the chances of scarring.
one week after 2nd treatment
> T ime between sessions is usually eight to ten weeks.
> T attfree uses a proprietary fluid to bring the tattoo pigment to the surface in the form of a scab. > O nce the scab falls off there is no more pigment and the underlying skin is clear.

Working in this industry since 1996 and having performed hundreds of treatments, her expertise lies in the subtle approach of using colour to enrich a client’s appearance rather than creating a strong made-up look (although she can do this). She believes the key to cosmetic tattooing is working with the face’s natural morphology and using techniques which enhance it. Artificial sweeteners... sweetening without the calories Huiru Teoh, Nutrition NT
Following the negative publicity that sugar has endured over the years, many have made the transition to sugar substitutes to enjoy some sweetness without having to worry about the calories. Artificial sweeteners are widely used by consumers and the food industry alike. Apart from being used as table-top sweeteners and in cooking, some of these sweeteners are also commonly used in commercial food products, such as in diet soft drinks, yoghurts, jellies, chewing gums and diet cordials.
Artificial sweeteners have had their share of bad publicity, with some reports challenging their safety. Despite the controversy, they have been approved by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). FSANZ regulates and reviews food products to determine their safety and suitability for human consumption. Although some studies have demonstrated a relationship between artificial sweeteners and cancers in rodents, research has not found this relevant to the pattern of consumption in humans. Artificial sweeteners can help to reduce your total energy (kilojoule or calorie) intake to help you lose weight. However, it may have little effect if you indulge in other energy-dense foods. Many foods today are sweetened with artificial sweeteners but that does not necessarily make them a healthier choice. Consumers should also look at the total energy, fat and saturated fat content of foods. Likewise, whilst Diet Coke and Coke Zero, have no energy
(kilojoules or calories), they are not necessarily a healthy option on a regular basis as the acid in them can lead to dental erosion. Whilst artificial sweeteners can help lower energy intake, they may not help with sweet cravings. With a high intensity of sweetness (take for example aspartame, which is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar), frequent consumption can condition your taste buds to like a high level of sweetness, reinforcing a like of sweet foods. Ultimately, the best tactic is to reduce the amount of sugar you are taking. As our taste buds can be trained to adapt to tastes and flavours, gradual reduction in the amount of sugar added to foods and choosing less sugary foods can train your palate enjoy less sweet foods. In summary, sugar or artificial sweeteners are not bad for your health, however anything in excess may be undesirable. If you include a lot of sugar, swapping to sweeteners may be a useful option for you. As always, moderation is the key. May 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

brushes
BATTLE OF THE While you probably don’t need every brush ever invented in your makeup kit it is definitely worthwhile investing in some good quality brushes. They can make all the difference between well applied makeup and patchy uneven makeup. Natural The best quality natural bristles come from goats, sables and blue squirrels (don’t worry animals are not made to suffer) and natural bristles are great for applying powder based products and for blending shades.
Synthetic
Brushes made with synthetic fibres don’t absorb as much product and apply liquid and creamy textures best. They are used for foundation, concealer, cream blush and lip products.
Duo Fibre
These brushes are a relatively new concept and a brilliant one. The white synthetic fibres apply the foundation while the black natural bristles polish it into the skin. You don’t need to keep loading it with product and it gives a beautiful even finish.
Kabuki
Kabuki brushes have a short flat head and the brushes are usually rounded or flat with a curved edge. They are a great all-rounder that can be used for powdering all over the face, blending cream blush and bronzers, contouring, highlighting and defining cleavage.
Fan
A fan brush is used for applying highlighter to cheekbones, centre of forehead and collarbone. They are also used for removing eyeshadow fallout, which is especially important when wearing a smoky eye as you don’t want to look like a panda!
The Brush Test
To test the quality of your brushes stand it on its tip on the back of your hand – if the bristles collapse it’s time to replace them. Another test of quality is how many bristles shed, while its normal to lose a few if the loss is excessive the brush is poor quality.
Cleaning Your Brushes
It’s important to take care of your brushes and clean them regularly. Clean brushes are not only more hygienic as they won’t spread bacteria but they mean you use less product while giving you the coverage you need. There are a lot of great brush cleaners in the market but the best one is to gently wash them regularly with baby shampoo.

KEEP MOIST
in the dry Ensuring that we keep hydrated during the drier months is essential in order to have healthy looking skin. When our skin is dry it is more susceptible to ageing and infection, therefore keeping our skin well hydrated will keep it looking supple and young.
There are two ways to hydrate our skin; internally and externally. We hydrate our skin internally by drinking water, eating healthy essential oils and taking certain supplements. Then we hydrate our skin externally by using moisturizers, serums and creams. Every organ in our body requires water to function; however it plays a particularly important role when it comes to our skin. Our skin cells need water in order to keep bacteria, fungi and other pathogens from infecting the body. When the skin is dry and cracked we are more vulnerable to infection, which is also why colds and viruses tend to spread more easily during the colder months. We also need to ensure that we are consuming enough essential oils and fatty acids in our diet, nutrients that are

commonly found in fresh fish, avocado and olive oil. If you don’t consume adequate amounts of these foods, an oil supplement may be a better option for you. When it comes to external hydration, there are several key ingredients to look out for in your products. Make sure you are using skincare that contains Vitamin A, C and E as these ingredients aid in healing and skin repair. A common misconception is that if you have oily skin moisturising isn’t necessary, however hydrating your skin can actually restore the PH balance, causing your skin to produce less oil. If you have
The Heart Foundation is urging all Australians to learn the warning signs of heart attack during Heart Week and is issuing a reminder that women are equally at risk. “An Australian woman dies of a heart attack every two hours, which is why we’re urging women to learn the warning signs at www.heartattackfacts.org.au,” said Dorothy Morrison, CEO of the Heart Foundation. “Heart attack warning signs aren’t always what you think - symptoms are not necessarily sudden or severe and some people, especially women, don’t experience chest pain at all. “Learning the warning signs could save your life, or the life of a loved one - download or order your free action plan today at www.heartattackfacts.org.au or call our Health Information Service on 1300 36 27 87,” she said. Heart attacks kill almost exactly the same number of women as men in Australia. In 2010, there were 5,056 male deaths and 4,882 female deaths. “If you think you could be having a heart attack, call Triple Zero (000) immediately,
problem skin then you may want to try a light, oil-free formula instead. Finally, make sure you are thoroughly protecting yourself against sun damage by applying an SPF to your skin every morning. By following these steps you will protect yourself against illness, premature ageing and dehydration. because the longer you wait, the more your heart muscle dies,” Ms Morrison said. “People who are treated within an hour of their first heart attack symptom have the greatest chance of not only surviving their heart attack, but continuing to enjoy a good quality of life. “It’s always OK to call Triple Zero if you think you have heart attack warning signs and if it turns out to be a false alarm then that’s the best thing that could happen.” Heart attack warning signs may include pain, pressure, heaviness or tightness in one or more parts of the upper body (chest, neck, jaw, arm(s), shoulder(s) or back) in combination with other symptoms of nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness or a cold sweat. Diabetes EFFECTS
on skin Diabetes is a disease that has to do with the level of glucose in your blood, you might be wondering how that can affect your skin. Your skin's health is actually related in two ways to the amount of glucose you have in your blood.
First, when you have high levels of blood sugar -- or too much glucose in your bloodstream -- your body tries to remove the excess by excreting it in your urine. It takes water to make urine, which leads to a loss of moisture in your body. With this loss of fluid comes a loss of hydration in your skin, leaving it dry and easily prone to cracking. As our skin is a primary barrier against infection its especially important to take additional measures nourish

and moisturize to avoid skin cracks and tears where possible. In addition to water loss, high blood sugar also causes a reduced blood supply to the skin, which can result in a number of different disorders. For example, diabetic neuropathy, or nerve damage, is a common condition associated with diabetes, and it can contribute to skin problems by making it difficult to feel pain and notice infections, especially in places such as your feet. Nerve damage can also cause you to sweat less, meaning more dry skin. Diabetes can be problematic for the skin on your feet, especially because you may not notice an infection there. To prevent serious problems, make sure you check your feet every day for sores, cuts or blisters, and monitor any issues if you do find them. Wash your feet daily and dry them well. Having a whole skin care routine to worry about might seem overwhelming when you're already dealing with a disease such as diabetes, but taking good care of your skin will pay off in the long run. Increase the amount of water you drink to a minimum of 2 liters daily, moisturize and take essential fatty acid supplements with omega 3,6 & 9 to support your skin.

Aching for a tropical getaway? We all know a Bali holiday is a stone’s throw away for Darwin residents. The W Retreat & Spa nestled in the high-end Seminyak, Get ready to be whisked away to the perfect beach haven. Vicki Nungala, Camille Damaso and I arrive at the entrance of the W Retreat & Spa with high-expectations. No wonder this Retreat won #1 Trendiest Hotels In Indonesia & Top 25 Luxury Hotels In Indonesia, Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice 2012.
design and modern Balinese décor. The W Lounge sits in the foyer and a mixologist adorns the signature W2-Tini with Persian fairy floss. Guests can throw ‘Wishing stones’ into the Away Spa water, and refreshing coconut spray is placed on the counter for an edgy touch. It’s afternoon-tea time and it looks like the Mad Hatter has paid a visit. Decadent cakes take centre-stage. Fat macarons, glistening toffee-apples and other goodies are just waiting to be nibbled on. We’re all upstairs on the top floor. The industrial design carries through the dark corridor. I open the door to a lush smelling ‘Wonderful Garden View Retreat’. Two bright olive green basins sit in front of the billabong-sized bathtub above a nifty skylight. A posh powder area, fluffy white robes and the exclusive W hotels Bliss toiletries are the perfect touches for a girls getaway. Splashes of green liven the neutral coloured bedroom up for ultimate chic as electronic renditions of MGMT’s ‘We Are The People’ fills the air. I pluck a jelly baby from the trio of treats sitting on the coffee table and gaze out the window. Skinny palm trees, lush greenery and the robust mountain in the background paint a brilliant view. All the perfect ingredients for a tropical island retreat! The W Retreat & Spa hits the high notes with poolside glamour. There are endless spots for sun worshipping over the property. Chunky colourful beanbags perch on stone in the middle of the top tiered horizon pool. Yellow disc-shaped lounges and aubergine umbrellas await guests. The large W sign sits on the edge of the property amongst all-white cabanas perfect for intimate moments. Thankfully it’s a quiet time, and only a handful of kaftan-clad and aviator-donned couples bask in the sun this morning. The gentle crash of the waves on Petitinget Beach helps me immerse into instant holiday-mode. The Petitinget area in Seminyak is so far removed from the chaos and humbug of Kuta and offers ultimate luxury. A ‘Beach Ambassador’ unrolls a fluffy yellow towel ready for me to embrace my inner-zen. The waiter returns with a fluro transparent menu. He holds an array of coconut or cucumber cooling spray and offers a complimentary ten-minute massage. I could certainly get used to this! At dusk, Vicki, Camille and I meander down to WOOBAR situated on the beach for two-for-one cocktails. The in-house DJ spins laidback tunes on the desk as I stroll in. The chilled out vibe encapsulates a hint of an LA pool party. We laze about on a circular lounge next to striking Bob Marley graffiti. Vicki and Camille order wine, while I opt for a Papaya Martini. This baby arrives in a double-walled glass along with salty broad beans, and it tastes sensational. Everything about this haven is right on point. The Retreat oozes glitz but is careful not to outbalance the modern Balinese essence. There must be something in the glistening water of

As members of Cruiseco – the Cruise Specialists, we provide: Australians are no stranger to Thailand. For many of us Darwinians, after you've escaped a few muggy build-ups by venturing to nearby Bali for a week or two, you start to feel adventurous and those cheap flights to Phuket begin to look very appealing. Such was the case for my partner Brett & I; after two months in Sri Lanka, we couldn't resist booking one-way flights to Thailand for $50. It was time for a new adventure. This was our second visit to Thailand, so instead of heading to Phuket again we decided to spend some time on the islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao soaking up the sun by our hotel pool, treating ourselves to daily massages and sipping frozen cocktails on the beach. I must admit the amazing local Thai food is always a big drawcard for me when visiting this country, so every chance we had we spent hours following our noses through the aromatic and chaotic local markets, trying new foods and falling back in love with old favourites. My Thai food tips: You can't beat a spicy yet sweet Papaya salad with sticky rice, stir-fried wide "pad see ew" noodles, and finish it off with fresh mango with coconut cream and sticky rice for dessert. Delicious. Koh Tao is one of the cheapest and most popular dives sites in the world, so of course we had to put
those new PADI open water diving certificates to use and get back under the sea. The diving at Sail Rock was particularly enjoyable, swimming against the current looking for sharks and sinking down a big underwater vertical shaft - it felt like exploring a new world. Some of my Darwin friends made the trip over to Thailand to spend my birthday with me, so for the first time in nine months we enjoyed quality time with some familiar faces, sharing our amazing travel experiences and catching up on lost time. We even splurged and rented a private villa in Koh Tao and spent the weekend reveling in the great company, amazing food, and postcard-perfect sunsets. Not a bad way to turn another year older, that's for sure. Brett and I have decided we are in love with Thailand and want to put our feet down here for a while, so we plan to head to northern Thailand and see what the laid back city of Chiang-Mai has to offer. The locals say that's where "The real Thailand" is, so I can't wait to check it out. Chiang-Mai, here we come!

Experience the Best of
KAKADU’S SEASONS It’s not just about ‘the wet’ or ‘the dry’, it’s not even just about our ‘tropical summer’ – Kakadu is unique in that it has not two, not four, but SIX seasons! The traditional owners of this land, the Aboriginal people known as Bininj or Mungguy, recognise six seasons by observing nature and the land they live off. The food they source from the land - the ‘products’ available in the ‘bush supermarket’ - change with the seasons.
Right now, we’re in ‘knock ‘em down’ season. Banggerreng is the season when the rain clouds have dispersed and clear skies prevail. The vast expanses of floodwater recede and streams start to run clear. Most plants are fruiting and animals are caring for their young. Violent, windy storms early in this season flatten the speargrass, hence the term 'knock 'em down storms’. Now is a great time to enjoy a magical night cruise on Yellow Water Billabong, guided only by the light of the night sky. Local guides speak the stories of aboriginal night mythology passed from generation to generation by local Kakadu clans. Hear, sense and smell the wonder of this ancient land. Banggerreng is followed by Yegge when the air becomes cool with the low humidity we are starting to experience now. The early morning mists that hang low over the plains and waterholes are a sight not to be missed. Drying winds and flowering Darwin woolly butt tell Bininj/Mungguy that it is time to start burning the woodlands in patches to 'clean the country' and encourage new growth for grazing animals. Wurrgeng is the 'cold weather' time, Gurrung is hot and dry, Gunumeleng is the pre-monsoon season when thunderstorms build in the afternoons, and Gudjewg is the 'true' wet season. Each season offers a different experience and the activities you undertake will depend on the time of year. Take a magical dawn or dusk cruise on the 92

wetlands of Guluyambi and be awed by the lotus lilies, blue-winged kookaburras, jabirus and hundreds of other bird species. Jim Jim and Twin Falls are among the most spectacular sights in Kakadu and can only be reached by four-wheel drive in the dry season. However, the wet season is when the thunderous 150-metre high falls are in full flow. They’re best seen from overhead on a scenic flight during Banggerreng and Gudjewg. Around 15,000 rock art and sites of cultural, archaeological and historic significance give testimony to the longest continuous surviving human culture, dating back at least 50,000 years. Ubirr, the most famous of Kakadu’s 5,000 recorded art sites is not to be missed at sunset. It includes the famous paintings of Namarrgon, the Lightning Man and the spirit Namondjok. Drop in at Gunlom and other waterholes for a cool dip, visit the turtle-shaped Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Cooinda to learn about the language, laws and creation myths of the Gagudju people, and experience the wonder of Kakadu across all its six seasons. Tourism Top End will help you build an itinerary to ensure you get the most out of your seasonal experience in Kakadu. OASIS
Whether your goal is to relax, entertain, dine, or simply escape this dry season here’s how to maximise your outdoor living space.
I treat the design and styling of an outdoor space the same way I approach an indoor space so start with a focal point in your oasis and then build from that to make an inviting area that family and friends feel they can linger in for hours. Often the biggest problem is how to best divide up your space and furnish it accordingly, for large areas a cost-effective and eco-friendly way is to use plants as a visual screen to define the different areas into garden ‘rooms’ that you can then place furniture in. Using varied heights of seating is a good way to alter the atmosphere of each area, Tip to try: Stools and a bar table teamed with a lounge/ daybed or a coffee table and low ottoman seats rather than the standard dining setting and twin lounges. For small spaces look at building in seating around garden beds or along balconies that can also doubles as storage rather than having bulky furniture that will overpower your mini oasis. Vertical green garden walls are a great way to get plants into a space without taking up valuable floor space, as well as being an ideal way to grow your herbs. Lastly add decorative accents to create a sense of style for your outside space - I recommend you go a bit bolder than you would inside your home and select accent pieces in wild colours to really liven up the space, then reflect some of these colours into your garden using flowers or coloured pots- The rest is easy just fill it with the people you love.

If you’ve been wondering what Trevor and Judy Ward have been up to in recent years, then wait no longer. After more than 4 decades in the signage industry and many years honing his craft, Trevor is about to launch ‘Zabu’ into the Darwin market. After establishing Piña furniture in Winnellie, a decade ago, Trevor has since been designing and supplying high end contemporary furniture to the very modern and very chic Zabu stores in Cairns and the Sunshine Coast. He and Judy now bring the same unique range of hand crafted custom designed furniture to the Top End with Zabu Darwin. “We design furniture that not only suits the tropical lifestyle but can be designed to seamlessly blend in with the current look and feel of your home. If you see something you like in our showroom that has 6 drawers and you want 8, we can custom build that for you. People start with one piece from our collection and before too long their home is filled with our designs.” One of Trevor’s most popular pieces - the Samrong - is a fixture in many Darwin’s homes. Originally designed by Trevor, this beautiful piece of teak is the perfect modern day sideboard that is still Trevor’s most requested piece. Zabu has an extensive range of products available, most of which can be seen on their website at www.zabu.com.au. Whether you are looking for living, bedroom or dining furniture or something new for the outdoors, Zabu can help you find the perfect piece to transform your home. Zabu also offer customized commercial furniture options for the corporate client. “I have supplied hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and private homes all over Australia and I believe what I offer Darwin homes and venues is totally unique. We have fitted out whole venues simply from
architect’s drawings.” Trevor and Judy are currently working day and night finalising every little detail of their brand new showroom on Stuart Highway in Winnellie. They will be displaying freshly made products at DarwinLife’s mega expo in June and are both thrilled to have the opportunity to deliver such a unique offering to Darwin’s locals. “The expo is a great opportunity for us to launch our store and meet our customers. We are really looking forward to it and have some great new designs planned specially for display at our stand.” The stylish new Zabu showroom will be opening very soon, with a stunning selection of furniture and homewares. “The most important feature in all of our products is the quality. We design and make furniture of the highest quality, but at a very affordable price.” Be sure to also tell your friends in Queensland about their second store - Zabu Showroom, Shop 12 and 13 Cnr Nicklin Way and Kensington Road, Minyama, Sunshine Coast. In the meantime, make sure you get down and say hi to them at stand number 39 at the DarwinLife Mega Expo, June 1st and 2nd at Darwin Convention Centre.

Consider the WOODEN CARPET! Previous discussions on timber flooring have brought comments from readers who like the idea but are worried the cost may be too high.
Others have asked about other ‘bare floor’ possibilities in the home and one, while liking the idea of doing away with carpets, worries that bare surfaces would present a danger to the elderly. Engineered or laminated floating timber floors can be a cheaper alternative to polished boards. They come in a wide range of hardwoods and their wearing qualities have improved considerably over recent years. They can be installed over existing flooring and are usually ready to walk on as soon as they are laid. All the finishing has been done in the factory so fumes from sealers and finishes are kept to a minimum and there is no need to sand and seal. While many products in this line will advertise themselves as suitable for DIY enthusiasts, engaging a professional HIA flooring installer ensures the job is done properly and to standards that validate the product warranty. These floors can be laid over existing timber floors, concrete or even linoleum. Think of them as large wooden carpets. They are not normally fastened to their base (that’s why the term ‘floating’ is applied) which allows the entire floor to expand and contract as one. This eliminates some of the problems encountered with traditional wooden floors such as cracks between the boards and squeaking. Another advantage of these floors is that you can match them to the décor of the rest of the room, rather than the other way round. The range of colours is considerable, beginning with reds and browns (best for more traditional, intimate areas) and merging into much lighter shades for a contemporary, vibrant look.

HOW TO HAVE SUCCESS WITH
Vegetable and Herb seedlings… The best way to put fresh and tasty vegetables and herbs on your table is to plant some wholesome varieties and nurture them with lots of T.L.C. Nothing beats the flavour and freshness of vegetables picked from your own garden.
At a Glance Position; Most vegetables and herbs need full sun, and perhaps shelter from the wind. Height; dependent on variety. Width; dependent on variety. The label should indicate size and planting distances. Selection Vegetable and herb seedlings come in varying forms. Most are available in punnets or singly in small pots which are more practical for varieties which yield higher crops. Choose those varieties which are in season. Your Garden Centre staff member can assist you here, but do give consideration to the types that all the family like. Now is a good time to get them planted at the beginning of our dry season. Where to plant An open sunny site is a must (at least four or five hour’s direct sunlight each day). A level site is best. Hot dry winds evaporate enormous amounts of moisture from soil and plants, so try to position your bed accordingly. Keep clear of shade from nearby trees, and of competing root systems. Soil Preparation To make a vegetable bed, turn over the soil, breaking clods or lumps as you go. Add some compost, well-rotted manure or All-purpose plant food and turn the soil again to mix it through. Drainage of the vegetable beds is very important, so it is a good idea to heap up the soil to create a raised bed. It’s easy to do this while turning the bed over with your spade. You can even build a timber frame to hold your soil in place. Raising the bed will help ensure the roots don’t get waterlogged. For container growing, use a good Premium potting mix as it will provide the right drainage and water retention. Garden soil in pots is generally unsuitable for vegetables. Having raised the growing bed or filled your containers
simply smooth the top surface with a rake. Use the rake handle to make straight rows if you want them…. Planting Water the seedlings thoroughly a few hours before planting (the garden bed should also be watered) and mark out the position for each seedling. Remove seedlings carefully from punnet,(separate just prior to planting) keeping as much soil and roots per plant as possible. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball, set the seedling in place at the same level or slightly deeper than at which it was growing, and carefully firm soil around roots. Planting distances vary depending on the vegetable (see the label). Water in well after planting. In hot weather it is preferable to transplant seedlings in the cool of the evening. If the weather remains hot it may be necessary to shade the newly planted seedlings for 2 or 3 days to reduce plant stress. As tender young seedlings are most attractive to snails and slugs you should sprinkle a small amount of snail bait sparingly around them to ensure they don’t disappear… Feeding Foot crops need little additional fertiliser after the initial feeding, whereas fruit and seed vegetables benefit from a side dressing of mixed fertiliser. Leaf vegetables need liquid feeding as well while they are growing. Watering After planting, seedlings should be watered frequently until established and new growth has started. Once vegetables are established, a good soaking will encourage deep roots. This helps them to withstand dry conditions for longer periods. Mulching Garden compost or well-rotted animal manure help an even temperature and discourage unwanted weeds. When preparing for the next crop it can be dug into the soil.
Pest and Diseases The best way to prevent pests is to grow healthy plants that will maintain a healthy tolerance to problems. To prevent the spread of diseases (or insect pests) which may attack vegetables belonging to the same group, crops of the same family group should be rotated. Initially, slugs and snails are the main pest – use snail bait or the “safer “Eucalyptus spray. If you are unsure what control is needed just ask your garden centre staff member for their advice.. Other Uses If you have no room for a vegetable plot, grow some tomatoes, radishes, chillies, capsicum or lettuce in pots in a sunny position on the patio or balcony, where they will look good as well as being useful. Try some lettuce in a window box or grow cherry tomatoes in a hanging basket. Happy growing is a happy harvest. Until next time………..

Use the Sun to relieve your Electric Shock With recent news reports of “Electric Shock” for Territorians as electricity prices go ‘through the roof ’, it’s no wonder NT residents and businesses are seeking ways to reduce their electricity consumption and power bills.

The sun is a limitless, abundant power source and Darwin gets more daily average sunshine than any other City in Australia, so it makes sense to harness this free natural energy. You can use the sun to power your lifestyle with a number of affordable solar solutions from Chromagen; Solar Power, Solar Water Heaters and Heat Pump Water Heaters. Solar Power is a very popular way to reduce power consumption. Simply put, solar power systems convert sunlight into electricity. The more panels you fit on your roof, the more electricity your system can generate, and the greater your savings. Did you know that water heating accounts for nearly 25% of the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the average Australian home? However, by choosing an efficient water heater you can keep your power costs down to a minimum. With Solar Water Heaters you can literally soak in the sunshine and save. You use less purchased energy because these water heaters utilise roof mounted solar thermal collectors to absorb the sun’s heat energy, which is then transferred to water flowing through them.

The solar pre-heated water is then stored in a tank for later use. Heat Pumps are also energy efficient water heaters that can make “savings appear out of thin air’. Heat pumps are like split system air conditioners working in reverse. They utilise an ingenious technology to efficiently transfer the thermal energy from the surrounding air, into the water, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels to provide the total energy source. Chromagen can also provide efficient commercial hot water solutions for applications in apartments, sporting facilities, mining and industrial processes with heat pumps, gas water heaters and solar pre-heated systems.

Living Ideas

The dry season is here, so shake off the shackles and head outdoors. Here are some simple ideas to bring your outdoor living space to life.
Use Lighting to Set the Mood
Nature Is Colourful --
Soften Up
Décor Should Be Too! Flowers, trees, and grasses are all bursting with colour; and yet, outdoor decorating is often done in a more neutral colour palette with rustic and natural materials. While decorating with neutrals is rustic and charming, why not spice up those neutrals with color! A wooden chair has a completely contemporary look in a red finish, and it brings a lively energy to your backyard.
A great way to add color is to introduce rugs, seat cushions, and accent pillows to your outdoor space.Rugs add softness underfoot and create a defined living space on your deck or patio, while accent pillows make outdoor seating more comfortable and inviting.
Lighting is an often overlooked element of outdoor décor, but it's one that will provide beautiful ambiance, and it's also essential for safety when the sun goes down. Light up your walls with wall-mounted sconces and fixtures; illuminate your garden with solarpowered LED landscape light kits, brighten your driveway with a pair of tall post lights, and don't forget candles and lanterns for the tabletop.
Growing Our Tropical City Now that Darwin is on the verge of yet another expansive boom, it is vital to get it right when designing an even higher density city. Many, many aspects are involved in evading environmental, health & social complications that can come with unsuitable manners of growth.

Currently academic and political researchers in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia are striving to undo the environmental, health and social problems that have arisen due to heedless development. Since Darwin is still really in it’s youth we have the great opportunity to learn from the mistakes of other tropical cities and implement the right policies and solutions to growing this highly specialized climatic region. This is already an outstanding and beautiful city, (of course with a few flaws - like all of us) but during this exciting brink in time of growth it might be astute to take great care in how exactly we are building our higher density neighbourhoods. One simple yet essential aspect in growing great tropical cities is by incorporating green spaces and trees. Darwin currently has an abundance, yet sometimes development can mistakenly oversee the many economic and social benefits of greenery. Many studies since 1997 have shown that individuals living in inner-city apartment buildings with well designed urban green spaces have stronger ties to neighbours and feel a greater sense of safety. Some psychological research suggests that citizens especially children prefer green and natural environments from artificial ones and the existence of trees and
maintenance of grass regions promote feelings of security and space. Additionally, levels of children’s play double in green regions which can have positive effects on many levels, including reducing childhood obesity. Local landscape architects and experienced landscape gardeners have a wealth of knowledge of appropriate tree-planting schedules that consider local climate and soil type. With regards to monetary investments it has been shown that properties on tree-lined streets have a higher value than those without. Urban areas also benefit from trees by providing a canopy of shade (resulting in lower energy costs), reducing water runoff, buffering noise, filtering pollution, providing privacy screening, increasing native wildlife, and enhancing the visual aesthetics of a city. WHAT DOES AN AGENT HAVE THAT I DON’T? O’Donoghues First National Real Estate answers one of the most commonly asked questions in the property market – “Why should I use a real estate agent to buy, sell or manage my property?” The simple answer, according to O’Donoghues First National Real Estate Principal Jeremy O’Donoghue, is because it makes financial, legal and common sense to do so. “Property, whether a home or investment, is a financial investment so it makes sense to use the services of a professional and in this case that is a real estate agent,” Jeremy said. “It may seem tempting for many homeowners to keep commission dollars in their pockets, but in the long run there is greater chance of maximising success and minimising stress if an agent is involved, just as there is if you use a lawyer when going to court.” The key things an agent will bring to the table include: • Realistic indications of a property’s value or rental return potential • Expert advice on how best to market and promote a property as well as the best method of sale - private treaty (for sale) or auction • Vetting potential buyers and tenants to reduce time wasted on unsuitable or untenable prospects • Access to more potential buyers, sellers and renters via their own databases and networks • Handling sale and tenancy negotiations and communications for maximum outcomes • Understanding the difference between emphasising the selling points a buyer is interested in and those that a vendor considers
important • Preparation of documentation related to sale and marketing or tenancy A good agent will also make sure that a process that can be a stressful and time consuming experience is a lot less pressured and more enjoyable. “The relationship between an agent and client needs to be one of mutual respect, based on loyalty and trust, because real estate transactions can be complicated and success relies largely on the skills of key players such as the agents and the client’s willingness to cooperate with their strategy for marketing and during negotiations. Having the right agent on your side can result in thousands of extra dollars in your pocket, so it is worth taking the time and effort to find the one that suits your needs best. Good agents will have excellent negotiation skills and be honest about what you are likely to achieve. They will set realistic prices and provide advice based on market conditions, and local supply and demand. The best agents will have open, regular and transparent lines of communication with their clients. Open, honest, two-way communications will ensure a satisfactory experience throughout the buying, selling or renting process. Clients need to be able to express their needs, wants and concerns without restriction. Budget, location, size and style are just a few of the hundreds of factors that are considered for a
property transaction. Whether buying selling or renting a property, feedback and direction should be integral to the process. Licensed real estate agents devote a lot of time and effort to gaining experience, qualifications and active buyer contacts. At O’Donoghues First National Real Estate, a great deal of energy and resources is spent on honing and developing agent skills, so they can become specialists in their industry and local real estate markets. Additional systems that actively match buyers and tenants to properties also help assure no opportunities are missed.
