December 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

SATURDAY 14th DECEMBER

Cover Story | DarwinLife

Santa’s Found Horse Power Get your Christmas celebrations off and racing this year at the Darwin Turf Club’s inaugural Biggest Family Christmas Party. The event will be jam-packed with activities and fun for the whole family, including pony rides, Santa photos, a wet slip’n’slide and Christmas craft starting from 1.30pm. It’s your chance to smile at a crocodile, Crocosaurus Cove will be there with baby crocodiles and a variety of reptiles for children to get up close and personal with. They will also be running a Christmas colouring in competition with plenty of prizes up for grabs, including a 2014 family pass. The celebration is being held at the Darwin Turf Club on Saturday 14 December, coinciding with a local five-race program. “Darwin’s Biggest Family Christmas Party is the perfect way to start the Christmas school holidays,” said Darwin Turf Club Marketing Manager Carly Archer. “It provides an affordable opportunity for families to get their festive celebrations off to a flying start, and we hope it will become a Northern

Territory Christmas tradition.” “Once inside the gate you don’t have to pay a cent to take part in our fabulous festivities, including the pony rides, the slip‘n’slide, and photos with Santa,” Carly said. “Santa has definitely got a taste for the Territory, he’s over the snow and has ditched his reindeer for a vintage FJ Holden Ute. It’s the perfect setting for a unique, NT-inspired family Christmas photo,” she said. Entry on the day is just $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, kids under 12 years of age are FREE and the cost of the gate includes all activities. Gates open from 10am for the interstate racing, local races will be held from 3.30pm while the children’s festivities will run from 1.30pm till 5pm. Families are also welcome to bring along their picnic rugs or chairs, and the track’s full range of bars and kiosks will be available. So head on down to the Darwin Turf Club for Darwin’s Biggest Family Christmas Party, and enjoy a funfilled, affordable family day out!

A big thank you goes to the Brown Stables for allowing us to turn their thoroughbred, Tornado Jack, into Santa’s reindeer for our cover photo shoot. He makes a great reindeer but wait till you see him fly on the track. Watch out Rudolph!!!

S.A.R CONTRACTING Since starting their business in 2005, husband and wife team Steven and Debra Robinson seem to have worked out the secrets to success, and are being suitably rewarded as a result.

Providing high quality kitchens, bathrooms, home renovations and extensions, in a professional and economic manner, their refusal to compromise on service and standards has helped them build and maintain a reputation of excellence. With one accolade after another as each year passes, their latest nod is as a finalist in this year’s Telstra Australian Business Awards (due to a mysterious but gratefully acknowledged nomination). This year, achievements across the HIA Australian Housing Awards, and the Master Builders Association NT, Excellence in Building and Construction Awards, in over half a dozen categories, have been an endorsement that whatever they are doing – they are doing right! The last few years have been a testament to this as S.A.R Contracting has added winner or finalist to their list of accolades in almost two dozen categories across the 20

December 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

HIA (NT) and MBA (NT) awards in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The awards won are also across many and varied fields, from ‘Best Kitchen Design under $20,000’ (MBA NT 2013) and ‘Bathroom of the Year’ (HIA NT 2012), to Business Partner of the Year for Debra (HIA NT 2012) and ‘Excellence in Building And Construction Award for Home Project/Renovation Under $150,000’ (MBA NT 2011). “We work closely with our clients to ensure we understand what they want so we can meet their needs in a professional and reliable manner,” says Debra. Clear and open communication is the key and the company’s mission is to take the stress of renovating away from clients wherever possible. S.A.R Contracting provide experienced and knowledgeable assistance with design, colour selection, obtaining of plans from the Building Board, draughstman’s drawings, engineer approval, building

permits and certification. Steven and Debra would like to thank everyone that has contributed to their success over the years. “We would not have a business, let alone win any of these awards without our suppliers, staff, sub contractors, professional trades and services, such as the engineers, and certifiers and most of all our clients.” S.A.R Contracting’s team of professionals are available to guide you and answer any questions you may have. They are happy to discuss your renovation needs with you and provide their expert advice and opinion. For more information check out their website at www.sarcontracting.com.au.

40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

2013 HIA AWARD WINNER FOR TROPICAL HOME OF THE YEAR

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TEAM AT IRONWOOD PROJECTS ON THEIR SUCCESS!

Established in 2010, Ironwood Projects provide expert building services and bring 40 years of experience in building and construction to their work. Partners Justin and Fabian are proudly Territorian and are committed to providing high quality, resilient, and customised homes in a timely and economical manner. Ironwood Projects have finished this year off with a bang by winning the 2013 HIA Award for Tropical Home of the Year and the team are deservedly proud of their achievement. Their award winning construction is a classic design reflecting Territory style. A two-storey home with

5 bedrooms and an open plan layout, the property captures the best of tropical living amidst the trees in Fannie Bay. The home manages to be contemporary and elegant, yet functional and practical as well. The ground floor has an industrial feel and focuses on the kids and the visitors, with a large rumpus room and a fully selfcontained guest suite, while upstairs living spaces are open and breezy with three bedrooms, a huge parents retreat with ensuite and a massive entertaining deck. This property is really the ultimate family home that provides a sense of openness and freedom that a growing family needs.

Christmas IN D A R W IN E

veryone enjoys doing a little shopping during the festive season but not everyone can afford to buy new items. Many people find just what they are looking for in one of the many opportunity shops in the city. The Darwin Memorial Uniting Church runs a very busy shop which is located next to the church in Smith Street. Ros Maklin, the manager, informed me that the shop, a not for profit organisation, has been operating in its present location for 13 years and the shop is always full of people looking for a bargain, particularly at this time of the year. “We get people of all ages and backgrounds coming into the shop - people wanting to find a book or magazine to read, parents wanting to buy toys for their children, students hoping to find kitchen items or bed linen for their new apartment, young people looking for a particular outfit for a special occasion, backpackers who want some tropical clothing and quite a number of office workers. Darwin people are very

generous and we receive many items that are brand new or in excellent condition. We have 26 volunteers who work in rosters throughout the week and two parttime paid employees and we are all kept very busy. Two of our volunteers, known affectionately as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dany DeVito, are responsible for emptying the bins where people leave their donations and then sorting the items which can be very time-consuming. They also empty the bins at a number of other opportunity shops and you would shudder to hear about the horrible stuff that they occasionally find in the bins! We often have surplus stock and regularly send items to other charities and local communities. In the last couple of weeks we sent supplies to East Timor and to the people in the Philippines who lost so much during cyclone Haiyan.” Doreen Adams, one of the volunteers, explained how the shop also supports the church. “There are two special Christmas events that will be taking place

shortly. The first is our Advent Workshop on Saturday 7 December where children aged 5 to 12 years are invited to come along for the day to make Christmas cards, decorations and presents for their families and join in the music and drama activities. Please register if you are interested as space is limited. The second is our Blue Christmas Service on Sunday 15 December at 6.00 in the evening and we look forward to welcoming anyone who is feeling lonely, lost or has recently lost a loved one. Everyone is welcome to come to the church at any time but the shop will be closed from 20 December to 8 January.”

Zoe Marcham Mereani Tikoinavuli, Ros Maklin, Annette Kerrison and Doreen Adams wishing readers a very merry Christmas. Dany DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Paul Kelly

to End a Massive Year at the Entertainment Centre Jessica Mauboy, Sesame Street and comedy duo the Wayans Brothers, 2013 has been an action packed year for the Darwin Entertainment Centre and it’s not over yet! Australian singing legend Paul Kelly is set to bring the house down when he performs to a sell out crowd this month. The eagerly awaited Spring and Fall Album Tour hits the Playhouse Theatre on December 13. It’s been five years since Paul last made a record and the Album Tour showcases his new music and a selection of his much loved older music. The show has received rave reviews interstate

and is expected to wow Darwin. A number of exciting end of year school and community events will also take place at the Centre this month before a short break over Christmas. Next year is set to be massive with the Centre continuing to re-engage local artists, dancers and musicians into the program. Some big names have already been secured for 2014 with Comedian Alan Davies performing in March. The highly anticipated Little Victories sees Davies virtuosic story telling and whip-smart funny bones combine to make this a show not to be missed. Inspirational

by Melinda Barlow Women have been attracted to healing professions for centuries, and it is not just because we generally excel at nurturing and caregiving. Looking after people’s health is a foundation profession and women by their very nature are attracted to doing stuff that matters. Sweeping generalisation? Or maybe I am speaking for myself and my experiences with the fabulous women I know.

Life can be significantly affected by poor health and even the smallest illness or injury can derail the best laid plans. Our primitive yearning for our mums when we get sick is surely not a coincidence after all! Sure there are plenty of men in health too, also doing inspiring things. But don’t get me started on man flu. This month we have the pleasure of sharing with you the stories behind the jobs of some of Darwin’s finest ladies. They look after our backs, and our bones, our skin and hair, our insides and outs. They bend us and stretch us, rub and scrub us, and in the end we come out taller, stronger, shinier and in tip top shape to go another fifty rounds, as only women are required to do – and that’s just on a Tuesday. As they share their stories with us, we learn lots about them – from why they chose their current career, to what they love best about it. We get some insight into the women behind the businesses and learn that inspiration comes in many forms and takes shape in many small unique moments. Whether in chiropractic or dentistry, laser hair removal or fitness, beauty or nutrition, life coaching or one of the many and varied roles in the medical field, these women have one thing in common and that is their ability to just get on with the job. Little do they know not only are they healing the sick, but also managing to inspire others along the way. You may need one of these ladies sooner than you think, and finding a good practitioner can be impossible when you are sick or in pain. Let us do the hard yards for you and please enjoy our December feature on ‘Inspirational Women in Health’.

Catie Kirke ART Your Life with Catie KirkE

Catie Kirke is passionate about helping women across the world learn to love themselves and their bodies. And in the two short years since creating the ART Your Life brand, she has done exactly that, empowering hundreds of women through coaching, programs and workshops.

The ART acronym stands for “Activate, Reshape, and Transform.” And it is an approach backed up by years of research that helps women create powerful, and more importantly, permanent, change in their lives. “As women, we don’t tend to put ourselves first, and we are more often than not also tend to be our own worse critics,” explains Catie. “We have a very bad habit of shaping ourselves on what we think other people think of us, instead of loving ourselves for the beautiful people we are. “When it comes to women loving themselves their loves and their bodies, I’m passionate, and I believe this change needs to come from within.” It was the realisation that she wasn’t living the life she wanted that led to Catie creating ART Your Life. A personal trainer and fitness instructor, she had had her own share of ups and downs. “My daughter was in her final year of high school and I was telling her she could go out there and make a difference and that the world was her oyster, be anything she wanted to be. And it hit me that I wasn’t following my own advice, walking my talk,” explains Catie. “I thought, how could I expect my daughter to love herself and go out there

and reach for her goals, when I wasn’t doing it myself.” Catie undertook training to become a mindset and transformation coach, qualifying as a Master Neuro Linguistic Programmer (NLP) practitioner, Behaviour Strategist and gaining her Diploma in Coaching. ART Your Life now runs several different programs with the foundational program and courses, ranging from weekend workshops to 7-week intensive courses. These revolutionary programs have been designed specifically for women and incorporate coaching, mindset, fitness, and nutrition strategies, practical tools and loads of support and accountability. Catie also runs online programs, corporate workshops, and is available for one-on-one coaching. Program participants come from across Australia and overseas, and include women from all walks of life from highflying business women to women seeking to work out what they do want to do in life. And those benefitting from ART Your Life aren’t just women looking to find their purpose and passion. Catie and her team – including Master ART Coach Jo Osborne and ART Coach Kelly-Anne Cummings – work with clients across a broad range of areas, whether it’s low self-esteem, relationship problems, eating disorders, binge and comfort eating, abuse, alcohol,

or breaking habits such as procrastination negative thinking and stressing. “In the program we teach women about their minds – literally the mechanics of the brain so they once and for all understand themselves. Why they do what they do, why they don’t do what they don’t do, what motivates them and what doesn’t. We also help them connect with their heart and what they really want and desire and how to feel fabulous inside and out . We focus on habits, and what motivates them to do what they do,” says Catie. “I love what I do. It’s a beautiful thing and I feel very privileged and humbled to be a part of these women’s journeys as they rediscover themselves and their appetite for life – and take a great big bite out of it!”

Dr Nicola Hughes Dentist - Darwin City Medical Centre The founding doctors at the Darwin City Medical Centre have been operating a general practice with a full range of medical services since 2008.

Having always wanted to expand the practice to include dentistry, they opened their doors to incorporate City Dentists (NT) in 2010. Dr Nicola Hughes joined the team as resident dentist in July 2011. Here, she talks about the passion she has for her field: Tell us a little bit about yourself: “I was born and grew up in Belfast, where I did my training and qualified as a dentist at Queens University. I came traveling to Australia as a student, and absolutely loved it. I always thought I would come back here, and three years ago I decided to give living in Australia a go, and I’m still here!” What made you decide on dentistry as a career? “I always had a passion to want to help people and improve their lives. Dentistry appealed to me because not only do you provide a service to the public, but it’s also a hands-on career. It’s a very good career for a woman to have, as the hours are more sociable than the medical profession, and you can be a lot more flexible, especially if you have a family.” What are some of the challenges you face in your role? 50

December 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

“I treat a lot of patients who have anxiety, or a fear of coming to the dentist, so it can be a challenge communicating with them. I pride myself on creating a very calming environment so patients can relax and feel more at ease. The job is also more physically demanding than people think, and you can spend a lot of time in uncomfortable positions while carrying out procedures that require a high level of precision and dexterity.” What are the highlights of your job? “When a patient comes in with pain and you are able to relieve it, it’s very rewarding. It’s also an amazing feeling being able to work with patients to educate them on the importance of oral health. I also love working as part of a team, and an advantage of this practice is working alongside the medical doctors and nurses. Patients can come here and get their medical and dental check-ups done under the one roof.” What attributes do you bring to the role? “I’m genuinely passionate about dentistry and I enjoy continually educating myself and learning about new techniques and technology. I also have a great deal of patience

for people, and take the time to make sure patients are comfortable and feel at ease.” How do you enjoy spending your time outside of work? “I enjoy travelling, and taking advantage of how close to South East Asia we are. During the dry season I make the most of what is happening around town, and also enjoy weekend or day trips to places like Kakadu, Litchfield or Berry Springs. Darwin is different to anywhere I have ever lived before, so to have all this on my doorstep has changed my life in a way I never thought possible.”

Sandra McHenry Owner – Hair Free Darwin

A background in nursing led Sandra McHenry to a career as a permanent hair removal and reduction specialist.

As owner of Hair Free Darwin, Sandra helps people seeking permanent hair removal and reduction and skin rejuvenation on a daily basis. “Being able to help people with excess hair growth in a professional capacity is very rewarding,” says Sandra. “Often having excess hair, especially on the face, can really affect some women, and they may struggle with self-esteem issues because of it. “Providing these clients with a solution to this problem is definitely the most rewarding aspect of my job.” Sandra has successfully owned and operated Hair Free Darwin since 2007. Prior to this she owned a Hair Free franchise in NSW. And over the years she has seen the advances in hair removal technology lead to more cost-effective, and less painful procedures today. Hair Free uses Square Intense Pulsed Light (SIPL) therapy, which screens out the UV that is present in laser treatments. “People often think waxing or shaving is a cheaper and less painful option,” explains Sandra. “In reality, waxing can cost you thousands of dollars a year. “SIPL hair removal can usually resolve the problem in up to eight sessions. “And we keep up-to-date with the latest technology, so our treatments are actually pain free and can take only minutes to do.” Hair Free Darwin uses the latest technology in pain-free hair

removal treatment. Their new GT Motion machine emits a painless near-infrared pulsed light that also covers a much larger treatment area than traditional laser therapy. And it is technology like this that Sandra believes will eventually render waxing a “thing of the past”. “Waxing is always going be painful, and it is harsh on the skin and can lead to conditions such as ingrown hairs,” she says. Hair Free also offers a tattoo and semi-permanent makeup removal service using the latest tattoo removal technology. These procedures are performed by highly trained and accredited practitioners, and all sizes, colours, and styles of tattoos can be effectively removed. “In the past, tattoos could only be removed by laser, making it difficult to fully remove some types of ink,” explains Sandra. “By using a system that attracts the ink to the top layer of the skin, we can successfully treat any colour tattoo, including those with unique pigment blends.”

Dr. Leandra Walker Chiropractor and Business Owner - The Chiropractic Place

Dr Leandra Walker is a one-woman health revolution. Along with her husband, Dr Jacob Brady, Leandra opened The Chiropractic Place in February 2011, with a focus on integrating traditional chiropractic elements with functional neurology, health and lifestyle advice. This approach has so far paid off - with The Chiropractic Place winning the NT Start-up Business Award in the 2012 Telstra Business Awards. The advice Leandra gives her clients is based on years of research and study. Along with three university degrees in Health Sciences and Chiropractic Studies, Leandra has written award winning research papers, including one that has been used by NASA in the development of its training programs. “I believe in living a healthy life, without giving up the things you love.” explains Leandra. “It’s time for a health revolution and we women especially need to start putting ourselves first. Exercise because it is good for you, and eat well because you are worth it.” Leandra believes in working to find the right solution for each client, no matter what their symptoms. “Every person is unique and leads a different life, therefore solutions need to be specific to each individual,” she explains. In addition to traditional chiropractic solutions, clients are given specific diet and supplement advice for their condition, as well as an exercise and stretching program. The Chiropractic Place also offers healthy cooking classes and free patient information sessions. One of Leandra’s main areas of interest is brain health and the link between the body’s nervous system, gut and

brain. “About eight years ago I worked out I was wheat intolerant,” she says. “While figuring out how to live a life without wheat, I realised all my ailments such as joint pain and headaches disappeared. So now I teach my clients about the connection between diet and overall health” As well as operating a successful business, Leandra is mum to her one-year-old daughter Asha. She is also author of the book The Cosmopolitan Hippy, and runs online training courses covering healthy living topics such as living a wheat free lifestyle. “I’m a woman who wants it all,” Leandra says. “It’s a balancing act, one that I’m constantly working on, but I love teaching what I have learnt to my clients.”

Shop bought cookies and cakes are laden with sugar and wheat and other such nasties and if you’re like me (or just did my wheat free in 30 days e-course) you want to avoid anything that makes you feel bloated, sluggish and just plain yuk. My Orange Cinnamon cookies are the solution. Whip up a batch just in case friends or relatives pop by for a holiday cuppa (or cocktail) or pack them up in cute little boxes to give away as holiday gifts. Everyone is sure to love them, even the fussiest of eaters. That’s it for the year! So I wish you a happy and healthy festive season and I will see you in 2014 with more fabulous tips to keep you healthy without losing the life you love. 52

Tamara Scott Owner – Beautique Salon

Tamara Scott hasn’t looked back since opening her own beauty salon in May 2012. The qualified beauty therapist is well known in the Darwin industry, having worked for a number of high-end day spas and salons for the past 9 years. Tamara’s salon, Beautique, offers a wide range of quality salon treatments including waxing, tinting, manicures & pedicures, Shellac and Gel nails, Vani-t spray tanning, make-up, lash extensions, massages and facials. A popular service she provides is the Bel Viso Body Bar & Cellu-melt heat wraps, which help to reshape your whole body and motivates a healthier lifestyle. “The body bar uses EMS – electrical muscle stimulation and it’s a great way to tighten sagging muscles and sculpt your whole body,” Tamara explains. “It was originally designed for physiotherapy to stimulate exercise without being physically active and experts believe a 30 to 45 minute session is equal to a six to eight hour gym workout. “It can help with postnatal toning, reduces pressure on joints and targets lymphatic drainage. EMS is also a useful tool for body builders and athletes as a positive influence on muscle strength relieving spasms and fluid retention.” Tamara says running her own salon after years of working for others is a dream come true. “I love running my own salon, and it doesn’t feel like work,” she says. “I am only a small salon, so it’s more personable. I have built up a good rapport with my clients, and they don’t feel like they are just another number. “My clients inspire me, and knowing I’ve helped them is a great feeling.

“I think it’s extremely important for people to come in and take time out for themselves. Often a treatment is all it takes to unwind, relax, and distress. “Clients can also bring their kids in with them, without the worry of being disruptive. Being a mother myself I understand that mums need time out too,” she says. Tamara studied fashion, glamour and bridal makeup artistry at the Napoleon Perdis Makeup academy in Brisbane. She loves expressing her creative flair and enjoys the reaction clients get when they look in the mirror. “It’s so nice to be a part of someone’s special day and I also enjoy being involved with the Look Good ….Feel Better program.” Beautique specialises in Pelactiv - a 100 percent Australian made and owned product, non-allergenic, no artificial colour or fragrance and not tested on animals. Pelactiv was created by leading biochemists, using the purest Australian native plant extracts. Being located in Winnellie it is convenient and central for busy working men and women. With The Trader café next door, Tamara offers a free coffee with every deluxe pedicure. And in the lead-up to Christmas Beautique has many gift ideas available, including Pelactiv packs tailored to individual skin types. Gift vouchers are also available. Tamara would like to thank all her clients for their continued support this year and wishes everyone a Merry Christmas with their loved ones.

Darwin Medical Imaging Providing state-of-the-art and cost effectIVE medical imaging service with fast turnaround is all in a day’s work for the team at Darwin Medical Imaging. Darwin Medical Imaging opened its doors at the Jape Homemaker Village in February and it wasn’t long until staff members Kerry Charlton and Jen Maurier saw this as an opportunity to provide a locally staffed and owned imaging service. Kerry and Jen officially became Directors in July 2013 and have focused on providing fast imaging, excellent customer service and quality results. Having worked in radiology her whole working life, Kerry is the office manager who strives for perfection. Jen completed her ultrasound training in Darwin. With a long history working in Radiology, Jen is focused on providing excellent image quality to the community. With such a motivated force behind Darwin Medical Imaging, they are able to offer fantastic services including x-ray, CT, mammogram, ultrasound and interventional ultrasound. “We really strive to give every client the best customer service possible” says Director Kerry Charlton. “We do this by minimising wait times and ensuring reports are sent out within 24 hours, so clients don’t have to wait for their results.” “We also bulk-bill, making our services more accessible for those who need them.” 56

December 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

Darwin Medical Imaging considers their staff family and therefore employs long term Territorians or people who call Darwin home. “We are unique in that we don’t rely on locum technicians, we want our customers to recognize our staff and have continuity of care, the quality of our work is incredibly important to us,” says Jen. From January onwards, Darwin Medical Imaging will be able to extend their services with the commencement of their MRI. “We have not just invested in an MRI but arguably the best MRI in its class. It will be the first fully digital MRI in the NT,” explains Kerry. One of the unique features of the Philips Ingenia 1.5T MRI is the 70cm bore, the largest in the NT. The 70cm bore will enable larger patients to receive magnetic resonance imaging, where they previously have had to travel down south. “Unfortunately we have not been able to secure a Medicare licence for our MRI,” explains Kerry. “This means that in the interim we will have to charge patients for MRI services until the federal government releases further Medicare licences.” Offering a comprehensive imaging service

for all stages of pregnancy, Darwin Medical Imaging also offers optional 3D/4D scanning as a fun scan between 26-30 weeks of pregnancy. This is an opportunity for parents to have a sneak peak at their babies in 3D/4D. “3D/4D pregnancy ultrasound is a fun service we offer to the mums to be” Jen states with enthusiasm. “The demand for 3D/4D imaging has been huge, and we are delighted to be able to offer it to the community” says Jen. With two determined and driven women leading the way, Darwin Medical Imaging will continue to service the community for many years to come. “We really give our clients peace of mind by ensuring they receive the best service possible, and with our state-of-the-art equipment we can provide quality results fast.” Kerry explains.

Darwin Medical Imaging is located at the Jape Homemaker Village, Shop 21, 356 Bagot Road, Millner. Ph: 8948 1122 for an appointment.

But this year, in addition to celebrating and recognising volunteerism in all its facets –we pay special tribute to the contribution of youth volunteers in helping us move toward global peace and sustainable human development. Volunteering is sometimes thought of as the domain of the retired, or people with time on their hands. But that would be to overlook the leading edge work being powered by a steadily growing cohort of young people around the world who are acting as agents of change in their communities. Certainly, volunteering is one of the best ways to turn the energy and creativity of youth towards development and peace. It helps empower them to lead, while providing valuable job and life skills. And because it can better prepare them for the workforce, it increases their employability. Through volunteerism, many young people have become a force for positive social development and environmental change. There are extensive opportunities for youth volunteers in Darwin and the entire Northern Territory.. For instance, volunteer organisations like Canteen and Camp Quality, where young people are assisted

by youth volunteers; wildlife and land care volunteer organisations like Conservation Volunteers and Territory Wildlife Park create excellent pathways to make a contribution around environmental sustainability. There are also volunteering roles for events and concerts ranging from stage assistance at ‘Bass in the Grass’ to supporting the Darwin Symphony Orchestra in the desert. All offer great pathways and benefits for young and old volunteers alike – and for the organisations they assist. Get out there and get connected! Talk to us – you could be amazed where it leads. When Ho, Ho leads to

Uh oh! Under the all-seeing eyes of the law a social function organised or sponsored by the employer is a work function. As a consequence employers are vicariously liable for the actions of their staff so if the cute guy from the copier room that you have cornered for a kiss under the mistletoe isn’t quite as keen you, you may be left with a blemish on your employee file not mention a bruise on your ego. So here are a couple of helpful dos and don’ts to ensure you don’t slide onto Santa’s naughty list: Don’ts • Use the office party as an excuse to blow off steam, share all your work gripes or compare the boss to Santa because he only works one day per year! • Buy your Kris Kringle gift from

62

December 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

Christmas is almost upon us and with it the annual chance to make a fool of yourself at the office party. Unfortunately living with the shame of being that person, you know the one I mean, the person that takes celebration to a drunken, embarrassing level that gives them a reputation that sticks for the entire time they’re at the company, isn’t the only thing to be worried about. Adults Only – okay yes it probably is hilarious but some things are best left for Hen’s nights. • Spend all evening talking business. You’ll end up with a reputation as the office bore. • Make a move on a colleague – unless you are Hugh Grant playing the British PM in the movie Love Actually, this is not likely to end well. Do’s • Thank your boss for a great party – it may seem old fashioned but good manners still go a long way. • Set yourself a drink limit. Getting drunk is a big no-no and the one most people have trouble abiding by. • Make the effort to mingle with people who aren’t in your immediate work team. A small amount of effort can help you in the long term in terms of

raising your profile, which is important in career building. • But most of all enjoy the party. Aim to be remembered for the right reasons and not for your lustful antics or dancing on the bar in nothing more than your tinsel g-string.

BOGARTS BAR & GRILL

OLD FAVOURITE • NEW FLAIR Bogarts, a well-established bar and grill in Parap has over the past year under its new general manager Mark McLaughlin and head chef Alan Callaghan have created an exciting and innovative menu of exceptional quality. For example, our entrees, Tempura Oysters (1/2 doz $16) were fresh, moist oysters, encased on a light, crisp tempura batter, complimented by pickled ginger and a smooth, zingy wasabi mayonnaise. A must try! Scallops ($15) served warm in their shell, topped with delicious salsa verde and accompanied by a waldorf salad with slices of crisp pear and pieces of walnut. Mains: twice cooked sticky Pork Scotch ($34) was a winner. A beautifully presented pork fillet, topped with a crisp apple filled wonton with caramelized fried onion, served with sautéed bok choy, brocolini, chat potatoes and a sticky reduction jus. The pork alone was tender and moist; however when

combined with the other textures and flavours: the dish was sensational! From the grill, we sampled the 250g Pepper Crusted South East Queensland (Grain Fed) Eye Fillet ($40). A ‘melt in your mouth’ piece of steak cooked to perfection, bedded on a blue cheese dauphinoise; the subtle flavours of the blue cheese complimented the wilted spinach and onion soubise, rounded off with Bogarts béarnaise sauce. Another sensational dish! Lastly, dessert. Cognac and chocolate tart ($15) A decadent, rich dark chocolate filling with a subtle after tone of cognac, in a light buttery casing: served with a silky smooth crèam anglaise accompanied by fresh strawberries and blue berries. A glass of Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syrah ($9) was the perfect accompaniment for this delicious dessert as it was smooth, aromatic and sweet. Congratulations to both Mark and Alan for creating such an exciting, creative menu at one of Darwin’s iconic venues.

DarwinLife | Get Amongst It

THE DARWIN LIFE TEAM COULDN’T HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER GET AMONGST IT THIS MONTH. NESTLED AMONGST THE TROPICAL PALMS OF EAST POINT NATURE RESERVE WITH OCEAN VIEWS, PEE WEES AT THE POINT HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN AS THE TOP END’S PREMIER DINING VENUE. SO WE WERE EXTREMELY EXCITED TO BE INVITED ALONG TO TASTE SOME OF THE TANTALISING DISHES FROM THEIR NEW MENU.

Get Amongst It | DarwinLife

Having recently won the AHA NT Gold Plate award for Best Stand Alone Restaurant two years in a row, we knew Pee Wees was going to be something special. And as soon as we walked in the door we felt right at home. With the sun setting over the Arafura Sea and a wet season storm rolling in as we arrived, we were welcomed by the friendly staff and soon seated with a drink in our hands – although the extensive cocktail, wine and beer list made it hard to choose just one! We started with entrees, which were simply to die for. The Tasting Plate encompassed the chef ’s best dishes, incorporating the many unique flavours of the Territory. Pee Wee’s Head Chef Paul Joyes and his team work hard to produce a menu based on local Territory flavours, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. We also had to try the newest edition to the Pee Wee’s entrée menu – the Chilled Prawn and Bug Tail Salad. A combination of local prawns and bug tails with a green mango, midnight pea and rockmelon salad and chilli jam. The only word I can use to describe this combination of flavours is “unbelievable”. Do yourself a favour and hop down to try it for yourself ! For the mains, it really is hard to go past Pee Wees’ signature dish: the Double Roasted Duckling. With crispy skin done to perfection the half duckling, complimented with the flavor of the Kakadu plum and tamarind jus, bursts in your mouth. We also ordered some of the newer dishes on the menu. The Whole Baby Chicken Ballotine stuffed with spinach, mushroom and sage, and served with parsnip cream, glazed carrot, and a tarragon jus was perfectly cooked; as was the Painted Crayfish Tail in a

garlic and chilli coconut cream sauce. However, it was the Seared Venison Backstrap that was my personal favourite. It’s hard to find a piece of venison that has been done well. Cooked rare in a master stock reduction and served with beetroot puree and a baby vegetable medley, Pee Wee’s pulled it off perfectly. When it comes to dessert, the Pee Wee’s Chocolate Slut always steals my heart. A long-time favourite for Darwin locals, this rich, velvety Belgium chocolate ganache pudding with its praline ice cream and mixed berry compote is a chocolate lover’s paradise. The Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee was a close second in the desert stakes, served with exotic cardamom-infused Rambutans and a mouthwatering wattle seed biscotti. There is no doubt that Pee Wee’s At The Point well and truly deserved this year’s Gold Plate Award. It remains our number 1 choice for special occasions. Go Get Amongst It for a truly memorable dinner to remember! Viva la Vida We have an office tradition where birthdays or special occasions are celebrated by going out to lunch and having the bosses pay for it, so we very muchly obliged and headed to Viva La Vida in Smith Street Mall.

There’s a great value plated lunch menu where most of the items are $15 give or a take a few bucks (tostadas, salads, quesadillas, paella, chilli con carne and a Spanish casserole). Vegetarians will be delighted as well with more than a few options to choose from instead of the usual token salad tacked. Orders are taken at our table, and while we’re waiting for our meals to arrive we get to soak in the wonderful lunchtime vibe of the mall under the shade of the giant Raintrees. Our meals arrive not too long after and all are looking like art on a plate. The dozen of us are all amateur food critics, so it’s a good sign when it suddenly goes silent as we all chow down with intermittent “mmm hmms” from the ladies and “oh yeahs” from the lads. You can go the tapas route if you want instead of the plated options. There’s a huge variety to choose from so you can mix and match to your hearts content. I should probably mention the beverage menu – if a good drop of wine is your thing then look no further. With what must possibly be the biggest wine offering in Darwin, the 10 page long list should have you covered. Overall a great spot for an quick and easy lunch if you stick to the lunch specials. Would visit again, which is what the office team have done several times since. For more foodies reviews, check out www.darwinfoodies.com

Local all the way! Since 2006, shops selling seafood have not only told you what amazing product you are buying but importantly what country it is from. Information is there to help you make your choice. If you want you can choose to buy cheap catfish, farmed under someone’s house, fed their waste, in the Mekong Delta one of the world’s most polluted waterways. Or instead you can choose, for a couple more dollars, to enjoy some magnificent local seafood. Without stating the obvious, how much better do you think local seafood will taste? No pollution, no antibiotics in fact our seafood has to be the most natural food you will ever eat!! The taste alone should guide your choice but when you start to consider sustainability, food health, human rights and pollution the choice is clear, buy local. Fish species commonly caught in territory waters around this time of year are Red

SEAFOOD is now considered by many to be the food of choice for a great Australian Christmas, and I can tell you that no one in our house would have it any other way. My youngest even asked for oysters on his 5th birthday! Let us face the truth; you don’t see people queuing down the street anymore to buy a turkey.

Snappers, Saddletail Snapper, Goldband Snapper, Black Jewfish, and Spanish Mackerel. If you want a real bargain check out the mixed bins of fish at your fish market. These lesser known species are caught in the Territory and are outstanding seafood choices, try some and taste the difference for yourself. Now what to do with your fish? Well first either bone the fillets yourself or ask the fishmonger to do it for you. Next mix up your favourite batter, cover your fillets and place them in the deep fryer or a large saucepan with oil. You just made the most popular seafood meal possible!!! A fresh thick local fillet in fresh beer batter made at home, it cannot get any better. And yes your kids will be back for seconds! Now what is the secret to the best batter, well let us find out. Post up your batter recipes on our Support NT Caught Facebook page and

the most popular post will win a $200 worth of seafood to ensure your Christmas is one to remember!!

Bestof

In my January column this year I wrote about Australian skin care and makeup products, and I made a new years resolution to incorporate more Aussie made products into my cosmetic case. So throughout the year I have discovered some fabulous Australian products that I wanted to share with you. Ultraceuticals Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30+ ($65) Sun damage is the biggest case of premature skin ageing in Australia. It’s so important to use products that contain SPF, but like many other people with oily/combination skin I hate the way these products make your skin look and feel greasy. Many products with SPF also have an unpleasant smell from the chemicals used to provide SPF. So I was thrilled when I started using the Ultraceuticals Protective Daily Moisturiser this year. With an SPF 30+ it provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection without the greasy finish or chemical smell. It also contains Vitamin E and Green Tea extract which provide moisture and anti-oxidants to the skin. ModelCo Fibre Lash (from $21.45) If like me you weren’t blessed with naturally long, thick eyelashes and need some help faking them then look no further than ModelCo Fibre Lash. These brush on false lashes are a great option if you don’t have the time to apply false lashes the old fashioned way with glue, or don’t want to try lash extensions. They are quick and easy to apply,

and increase lash length by between 3-5mm! Best of all they come off easily with an eye make-up remover, unlike the lashes you glue on. You apply a coat of the extension mascara to clean lashes, then a coat of the lash fibres, then another coat of the mascara. You can keep repeating those steps until you get the thickness and length you desire. So quick and easy and the results look great! Cate Ruby Nail Polishes In 2009 the founder of Cate Ruby, Tracey Smith, set about creating her own nail polish brand that was packaged as beautifully as the colours inside the bottle. Now there’s over 50 colours and 40 stockists selling first class nail colour adorned with a gorgeous, wearable diamonte ring. I absolutely love the colour collections and they last longer than most other brands. Cate Ruby nail polishes are available online at the Adorne store in Casuarina Square Shopping Centre.

Vanity HAIR

This months lovely winner Yomei was a hard woman to get in the chair. She is exceptionally busy in both her work and personal life. The natural curls had some nice colour in them but we wanted to add some warmth and rich tones. We chose a rich copper red as an all over tone and used the existing foils and natural light tones to create this beautiful multi toned colour. Straight away we noticed a change in Yomei’s complexion and everything came alive. Inspirations were red earth, Uluru and some of these beautiful wet season storms at sunset.

EXTENSIONS Have you heard of Prescription Nails? These are the new kid on the block of Nail Enhancements.

Helen Wilkinson Manager/Owner – Lash & Beauty & Simply Elegant 27 years in the Beauty Industry. www.helenssimplyelegant.com

Well they are not actually that new, they’ve been around for quite a few years now. The best thing about these nails is that when applied and removed properly by a qualified Nail Technician they won’t cause damage to your nail beds. These nails are soaked off every few weeks and a new set is re-applied all in around 45 minutes, and there’s no harsh filing or drilling done to your nails. I’ve been a Nail Technician for 28 years now with Acrylic and Gel being the main contender over that time. If Acrylics and Gels are removed properly there will most likely be temporary damage to your nail that should grow out in around 12 weeks, this is due to use of files, drills and primers. The problem these days is a lot of salons will clip and rip off your nails instead of soaking them off; this causes layers of nail to go with the extension and will cause possible permanent damage. Happy Grooming.

CoolSculpting FOR BO DY SC U LPTIN G & FAT R E MOVAL The Cool Solution is the More Natural Solution. Procedures that use laser, sonic waves and even surgery to remove fat can actually destroy other tissue in the process by burning, shattering or extracting non-fat cells.

This requires downtime for your body to heal. Totally uncool. Fortunately, CoolSculpting doesn’t burn, shatter or extract any cells. Developed by Harvard scientists, the unique, FDA-cleared, patented procedure uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen. Your healthy skin cells remain, well, healthy. No knives. No suction hoses. No needles. No scars. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body. In a few months, boom: say hello to a new you. Minimal Downtime and Lasting Results. Unlike a lot of other procedures, CoolSculpting takes very little time and is pretty simple to fit into your daily life. After your CoolSculpting treatment you can typically get right back to your busy day. Each treatment lasts one hour – the same time you might spend at the gym. So you can easily fit your appointment into a lunch break. After one visit, you’ll typically see a noticeable reduction of fat. It takes a few

E X O T I C

months to fully realize the effects, mainly because it takes that long for your body to naturally dispose of the fat cells. And yes, you can lose even more with additional appointments if you and your doctor deem it necessary. So after a few months, your clothes will fit better and you will look better. What’s more, there are no pills or supplements. And as long as you maintain your normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable. CoolSculpting is exclusively available by Katy Sullivan & Dr Ash Sankarayya at Advanced Body Image www.coolsculpting.com www.advancedbodyimage.com.au 89856088

WET

Our Tips During the summer months in the Top End the build-up and wet season weather make it hard to keep looking fresh and bright.

So what can you do to help your look? The easy answer is to keep up with common and simple cosmetic treatments and take extra special care of you and your skin. Keeping up with your regular Botox® treatments or indeed starting some upper face wrinkle reduction can help relax and freshen your look. Team this up with some skin treatments and get a nice dewy look that will defy the season’s heat. Remember also that Botox® is also very effective at reducing excessive sweating and a single treatment should last all summer. There are a number of good ways to get the skin looking lively; a light chemical peel will remove that lacklustre, dull outer skin layer and produce a healthy glow whilst also allowing your cosmeceutical products to infuse and get to where they need to be. This could be followed up with some good quality facials such as the HydraFacial® system which cleanses,

exfoliates, extracts and hydrates all at once and is available in Darwin at Advanced Body Image in Nightcliff. There is also the so-called Vampire facial much loved by the beautiful people of Hollywood. Hydration, sunprotection and a careful diet low in sugar and fat will help keep you healthy and looking good. Enjoy the festive season. This month’s contribution has been provided in conjunction with Kristina Kyriacou who is a Health and Beauty columnist with her own popular blog. www.kkristinak.blogspot.com.au

VERTEBRAL

ARTery This month I’m discussing a topic that creates a lot of controversy between our profession and other health industries. That is the perceived dangers of manipulation (adjustment) to the neck and the corresponding dangers to our neck arteries and blood supply to our brain.

To this day even with Chiropractic’s good safety record there is still a concern regarding the risks of neck adjustments. Like everything, if manipulation of the neck is performed by an inadequately trained individual then of course it’s very dangerous. However in the hands of a trained professional like a Chiropractor it’s very safe. Before I adjust a new patient’s neck I explain to them what they should expect to feel. For years now I have said “During the neck adjustment I am going to perform a short quick turn of your neck to the side, the rotation is less than what you can do yourself ”. I then show the patient what I mean, by getting them to turn their head as far as they can to the side, we commonly perform this kind of rotation every day, especially when looking over our shoulder. This usually gives the patient a comparison of how far we can naturally turn our head to the side as opposed to during an adjustment. Recently I discovered a journal article from the University of Calgary written by a Professor of Biomechanics. This study measured the amount of strain placed on the neck arteries during normal motion versus the strain on the same arteries during a neck adjustment performed by a Chiropractor. This study found the average strains of the neck arteries were significantly smaller during the adjustment than the strains obtained through normal daily neck movements.

This study concluded that Chiropractic adjustments to the Cervical spine do not place undue strain on the neck arteries and is therefore not a predisposing factor in neck artery injuries. So don’t be worried about neck adjustments, Chiropractic has a great safety record and with our training and experience in dealing with spinal related disorders, you’re in good hands. Herzog, W. et al. Vertebral artery strains during high speed, low amplitude cervical spinal manipulation. J Electromyog Kinesiol. 2012 Oct. 22 (5) 740-6.

This means that for her and the staff at Hair n Play, there is never a dull moment! Hair n Play already offers the unique service of a family friendly hair and beauty facility with a dedicated play area for kids, but Jo has now value added to her business by offering her customised children’s parties. Providing a much needed service to Darwin families, Hair n Play is a salon where busy parents can access hair and beauty services by experienced stylists and therapists, and keep the kids entertained at the same time. “I could see the value of this in Darwin. There are a lot of fly in fly out staff, defence and single parent families here

and popping out for a hair cut or facial can be almost impossible when you are solo parenting.” After a request from a parent recently who was looking for a suitable space for a party for her twin daughters, Jo realised this was another service she could offer and agreed to host Lily and Hannah’s 7th birthday. The girls had a great time and their mum had a much less stressful experience by not having the party at home! Parents can tailor the party to the child’s desires, and Jo is happy to discuss ideas for themes. It’s every girls dream to get pampered like Mummy – with hair, nails

She has also teamed up with House of Cupcake owner Jane Fryars, who will keep the kids fully entertained. On arrival, the party-goers are provided with fun flavoured cupcakes to decorate themselves, which form part of the birthday cake fun and in keeping with the party theme. All parties are package deals and interested families should contact Jo to talk about their ideas and get a personalised quote. Fitness Works also gets real results, fast. Read below for an account of how joining Fitness Works was the best thing Darwin Life writer Kasey Brunt ever done, and how owner-operators Churyl and Seann Scheppard and their team of professional, dedicated staff, continue to empower her along her fitness journey: “Walking into a gym for the first time can be an intimidating experience. Not so at Fitness Works, which really does live up to its name as the friendliest gym in Darwin. Returning to Darwin after some years spent in Melbourne, I realised I needed to do something about my weight and overall level of fitness. Over the past few years, I had gone from living a fit and active lifestyle to one where I did no exercise at all. The result was more than 40 kilos in weight gain,

and some pretty unhealthy eating habits. From the outset, owners Churyl and Seann Scheppard and their team at Fitness Works were lovely, and really made me feel at ease. They recommended a group exercise class to try on my first day, which was a great way to ease back into a healthy lifestyle. After a week of sticking to the beginner fitness classes and basic cardio, I knew I would need to step things up if I wanted to achieve my goals. I had previously been an avid gym-goer, but I had no idea how to get back into shape. Put simply, it was only beginning to hit me just how unfit I had let myself become. I approached Seann about undertaking some personal training. Explaining my situation to him, he knew exactly what to do to get results. From the very first session, Seann had me

training in a way I hadn’t done in years. To get results, you really need to challenge yourself, and this is something I couldn’t have done alone. The past four months of working with Seann has been an empowering experience. He hasn’t just provided me with a structured training program that actually works, but has gone above and beyond with nutritional, educational and motivational advice. He’s also taught me more about my capabilities than I ever thought possible. At the point where I would usually give up, he somehow manages to get a lot more out of me. He’s also taught me to deal with setbacks and overcome emotional and physical roadblocks, and has challenged me to do things I wouldn’t have thought possible. I have so far lost more than 10 kilos, developed an incredible amount of muscle definition, and increased my fitness capabilities ten-fold. Exercise

and healthy eating is now a big part of life. Without the team at Fitness Works, these results would have never been possible.”

DEFENCE & NTPFES

As well as personal training, Fitness Works offers a wide range of group exercise classes with some of Darwin’s best instructors. Game of (iron) Thrones The modern breed of female fitness enthusiasts have battled their way through cliche and criticism to be firmly in front of the race, to claim the Game of (iron) Thrones. It’s no secret in the past such a Game was generally considered male dominate, forcing women to open gender specific gyms to avoid being intimidated or harassed by their knuckle dragging male counterparts. Before too long came the notion of female specific exercises and methods, which in turn gave birth to a whole new vocabulary of buzz words such as toning, high rep, and my favourite core. It would seem the Game was all but lost if it weren’t for a small group of committed women who have realised that weight training isn’t gender specific, with no real limitations being placed on any one person except for the ones they place there themselves. Fast forward to today’s current gym

climate where we see women pulling big numbers off the floor, dominating squat racks and crushing pull-up bars, all in the name of getting fit and strong the right way. The right way involves learning compound lifts, such as deadlifts and squats, and starting to master bodyweight exercises such as pull-ups, handstand push-ups, rows and dips. All of which will leave you far stronger, leaner and fitter than anything you’ve previously been doing. The fact is that anybody who devotes their time to workouts that revolve around light weights and high reps are doing exactly that. Going around in circles, doing nothing more than exposing themselves to overuse injury,

plateaus and boredom. Stop doing what’s fashionable and start doing what actually works. Stay Strong, Wes

Further stages include a 7 story office block and an expansion and additional level to the shopping centre to accommodate future growth. For a different perspective, see all 13 gorges by air in a helicopter! Pop into the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre - friendly staff will give you the best advice on walking, camping and other activities within Nitmiluk National Park. Between Mataranka’s thermal pools and Bitter Springs, you’ll be spoilt for choice in which to while away the day floating in palm and paperbark-fringed pools. Mataranka’s thermal pools bubble away at a constant temperature of 34° Celsius, perfect for soothing aches and pains after a day on the road. Listen to the chatter of the little red flying foxes - the area around the pool is a natural breeding ground between November and May. The Bowali Visitor Centre in Jabiru is the best place to start your Kakadu National Park experience. Been there, done that? You’ll be surprised at the little known, hidden spots off the map, that are available to visitors and accessible year round – all you need to do is ask. Seek some cool relief with a Kakadu documentary in the air-conditioned theatre, flick through one of many books in the library, or treat yourself to an ice-cream in the Anmak An-me café. Or, get sky high! Some of the best views of Kakadu are from the air, with scenic flights taking you over the rushing cascades of Twin and Jim Jim Falls, the wetlands and Arnhem Land escarpment. Challenge your ability to swim against the current of Florence Falls in Litchfield National Park – your own natural jet pool! Local favourite Florence Falls is open to swimming all year round, with only a very rare, occasional closure when the road leading in to the falls is flooded. The spectacular falls cascade into a plunge pool, set in a pocket of monsoon forest. It’s a wonderful spot to take a refreshing dip with family and friends. Take the time to explore beautiful Batchelor on the heritage walk around the quaint town – grab your map at the Batchelor Visitor Centre. Rainy day in Darwin? Check out the latest exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT and say hello to Sweetheart, the Territory’s most infamous croc; explore those World War II Storage tunnels that you have always been curious about and learn our significant WWII history at the Defence of Darwin Experience. Don’t mind getting a bit wet? Get amongst the hundreds of fish that come in on the tide at Aquascene for feeding; body surf the waves at the Darwin Waterfront’s Wave Lagoon; marvel at the impressive storm fronts rolling in at any of the beautiful locations along our shoreline.

With Malaysia Airlines now flying to and from Darwin four times a week direct to Kuala Lumpur, there is no better time to experience the wonders this country has to offer as a unique, family-friendly travel destination. Darwin Life writer Kasey Brunt was on the inaugural Malaysia Airlines flight from Darwin to Kuala Lumpur. Travelling on to the Malaysian island state of Sabah, she recounts her experiences of this amazing country below. Having travelled on many airlines, I was looking forward to experiencing what the award-winning Malaysia Airlines had to offer. And they certainly lived up to their name as one of the world’s friendliest airlines: the service - from ground checkin through to inflight and beyond – was beyond exemplary. The flight from Darwin to Kuala Lumpur takes a little over four hours. From here, we travelled on to Sabah. Just a two-anda-half hour flight from Kuala Lumpur, Sabah is situated on the beautiful island of Borneo. And it is truly paradise, suiting every type of holiday-goer with its breathtaking beaches, towering jungle, and diverse cultures and cuisines. Whether 98

you are looking for a family vacation spot, a place to unwind or relax, an adventure holiday, or your honeymoon destination, Sabah is guaranteed to have the accommodation option and activities you are looking for. What to do in Sabah: Home to South-East Asia’s largest peak, Mt Kinabalu, as well as some of the world’s best dive spots, picturesque golf courses, and amazing shopping, the list of things to do in Sabah is endless. Some tried-and-tested activities to do include: Orangutans: Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort is home to an orangutan rehabilitation conservatory, where you have the chance to see these amazing creatures up-close in their natural environment. Taking in baby orphaned or injured orangutans, the 64-acre nature reserve at this five-star resort is also home to many other species of flora and fauna. Mari-Mari Cultural Village: Situated

within lush jungle forest in Kionsom, 25 minutes from Kota Kinabalu, this ethnic village introduces you to the traditional tribes of Sabah, including the iconic head-hunters. Take a trip back in time and take part in tribal ceremonies, learn how to start your own fire or make your own rice wine. Kundasang War Memorial: Established in 1962, this humbling memorial situated 90km from Kota Kinabulu commemorates the brave Australian and British prisoners of war who died at Sandakan and during the horrific death marches to Ranau during World War II. It also remembers the brave people of Borneo who risked their lives to help the POWs. In recent years the Memorial has been restored by business man Sevee Charuruks, and its beautiful gardens, remembrance pool and wall of honour, makes it a must-see destination. bygone era of British North Borneo on one of only two operating steam engine trains left in the world. Leaving from Kota Kinabalu, you will be transported back in time to the early 1900s, passing through villages, rainforests, and plantations of rubber and coffee. Getting there: Malaysia Airlines flies direct from Darwin to Kuala Lumpur four times per week. Connecting flights on Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu are then available. www.malaysiaairlines.com Where to stay: Sabah offers a wide range of accommodation, from inner-city 5-star hotels, luscious resorts, and island villas. here are few destinations in the world that cater better to the stereotypical man, than the Top End. I mean we have everything a man could possibly want right? Cold beer, for example, and fishing, and boating. Four wheel driving and quad bike riding. Looking for crocs or avoiding crocs. Or just heading out of town into the bush. Did I mention cold beer and fishing? Sure, I may be generalizing, but you get the idea. Darwin offers plenty of opportunities to bring out the inner bloke in even the most metro of males. But the domain where they really get to come into their own is on the water. We have a club here for every kind of marine vessel it seems, and everyone is welcome at all of them – whether you are loyal to the sail or the trailer. At any given time of day or night, somewhere in Darwin, you will find a man dangling a line into water. It might be on a bridge, it may be off a jetty. It could be from atop of some rocks at East Point or precariously balanced creek side with one eye searching for secret lurking crocodiles. Wherever there is water, you can be sure that at some point, someone has fished it. But it’s not all about the fish right? There is the general pleasure of just being out on the water. An esky full of cold beers and snacks, a spin around the coast, taking in Darwin’s glorious harbour and the fabulous views from the sea. There is only one thing better than watching the sunset in Darwin, and that is being a part of it – out on a boat on the water with all the brilliant colours soaking the sky around you. The crocs and the stingers may scare us off a lot of water activities, but there are still some die-hard fans you will find out on a jet ski, or practicing their windsurfing, in the less risky months of the dry season. There are plenty of sunset cruises on offer and it’s Darwin so someone always know someone who has a mate who’s got a boat. Get out on the water and enjoy your gorgeous city from a very different perspective.

DROP A

LINE

There are few destinations in Australia more coveted for their fishing than the Top End. Many a bucket list has ‘catch a giant barra in the NT’ on it and we live right in the heart of the land that makes that dream real, with a plethora of fishing adventures at our feet.

Here in the Territory we can fish hundreds of varieties of fresh and saltwater creatures from our abundant clean waterways. Saltwater fish are plentiful like jewfish, coral trout, and golden snapper, and estuaries and tidal creeks are teeming with barramundi, mangrove jack and threadfin salmon. From local creeks to remote wide span rivers, secluded billabongs to ocean reefs, there are no shortage of stunning locations offering any kind of fishing that suits your preference. Need to get the kids out of the house on the weekend? Why not take them to throw a line in at Rapid Creek bridge, or Nightcliff Jetty? Something a little

less populated? Head out to the Elizabeth River bridge for some peace and quiet and a magical sunset over the harbour. Further afield of course is where the real action begins. Whether you have your own gear, or are a first timer, or maybe you have interstate visitors in town, who want to get out on the water and catch a big one? There are numerous self drive options, as well as half day, full day, or week long charters. There’s fishing from the riverbank, the jetty, a dingy or something bigger and more reassuring – like a helicopter. Darwin is THE destination for fishing and offers you plenty of options to get out there and throw a line in. Watch out for crocs!

The

Rugby Shop As another year draws to a close we reflect on the transition of The Rugby Shop from a Stall with a rollerdoor in the old Mitchell Street Transit Centre to a modern shop in the bustling Mitchell Centre of Darwin’s CBD.

Before

Some 21 years ago The Rugby Shop began operating from this stall and three years later a demountable at this facility was purchased and was later re-located across Mitchell Street to where Crocosaurus Cove is now situated. The 12m x 6m demountable had a verandah, iconic goal-posts were added and a Village Green was established beside this shed. In addition to the growing retail side of the business, The Rugby Shop became a meeting place for like-minded people and as well as tourists from all over the world dropping in for a chat or a “bopeep” at the memorabilia; the Stray Cats Rugby Club would often gather for a meeting, barbecue and cold coffee, or a game of Bocce on the Village Green. Following the 2003 Rugby World Cup another move was made to our current location in the Mitchell Centre. Canterbury International has played a big part in the development of this business in that they have been with us since Day 1. As well as stocking the Canterbury sports and leisure apparel we have developed our own range (Brutal Sports) of “exclusive” Northern Territory themed product. This product includes Dingo Rugby, Croc ‘n Roll Rugby, Mad Cows, Stray Cats, NT Rugby and Heineken & Coca-Cola Super 7s Rugby. As a Canterbury agent The Rugby Shop has been able to produce a wide range of high quality team sporting apparel to local sporting clubs, schools and corporations. Wallabies merchandise is also very popular with the tourist market and we have continually added to our retail lines in the sports and leisure fields. Crocs Shoes, Jacaru hats, a wide range of bamboo products and lifestyle-wear adorn the racks and shelves of the shop as we continue to evolve and expand the product range we are mindful of the need to develop product that is compatible with our tropical lifestyle. Be sure to drop in and check out our merchandise. The staff at The Rugby Shop extend Christmas greetings to all our valued customers.

CAR OF THE MONTH

WHAT IS YOUR NAME? Dave Eakins VEHICLE COLOUR, BRAND AND YEAR? Lotus 7 replica (circa 1957) built by Matthew, (my son) and myself as a father and son project.. The color of the vehicle is a real stand out called Marks and Spencer green. People always comment on how much they like the color. I think it sets off the car really well. When we built the car we wanted a retro look, a mix of old and new, hence the brooklands windscreens (circa 1930s) and the big 8 inch chrome headlamps, but a very modern look to the car, via the color, and the latest technology drivetrain. WHAT WAS THE CONDITION WHEN YOU FIRST PURCHASED IT? We purchased the chassis from Puma Cars, a chassis manufacturer in Adelaide, and we did the rest ourselves. The aluminum

bodywork was hard to get right, and as with all these type of projects we learnt a lot as we went along. Those front side panels with the vents in them are a work of art, and required a great deal of work to get right. WHAT MODIFICATIONS HAVE YOU DONE? The engine is a Nissan SR20DET turbo out of a Nissan Silvia. It has a bigger turbo, exhaust and different ignition, giving it 300hp in a car that weighs approximately 600kg. It has a Nissan gearbox and a VL Commodore differential. Wheels hubs and brakes are all VR Commodore. The revheads out there will appreciate the power to weight ratio. The cars 0 to 100kph acceleration times are the same as a Lamborghini Gallardo V12 supercar. ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE CAR? I think the thing that blows people away, is the fact that the car has such awesome

performance and appeal, and we built it in my carport at home. MVR consider the car a 2013 model, as we registered it in August this year as a brand new car HAS IT WON ANY AWARDS? My wife Juvy has given me a clever husband of the year award. She loves driving into Darwin in the evenings for a coffee WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR STAND OUT MEMORY IN THIS CAR? Having just registered it and discovering just how well the car drives, accelerates and handles. It is by far the best performance vehicle I have ever driven. It can be an absolute rocket ship or it can be driven around town like driving Miss Daisy. A truly wonderful driver’s car.

Living

Water S M A R T in the

D A RW I N REGION We all know how great our lifestyle is in the Top End, with beautiful gardens, backyard BBQs, and cooling off in the pool.

Home | DarwinLife

Most people might think we need to use a lot of water to maintain our gardens and our great tropical lifestyle. This is not the case. Being water efficient is not about going without or sacrificing our lifestyle. It is about the community working together to reduce the amount of water wasted, about respecting this natural resource and about acknowledging that even with our annual wet season rainfall, Darwin River Dam is not bottomless. Water is a finite resource. With rapidly growing population, long dry months, high evaporation and high water use, the Darwin region faces some tough decisions about how we value water, how efficiently we use it, what we are prepared to pay for it and where we will find future supplies. Residents in the Darwin region are among the highest water users anywhere in Australia. While many other large cities in Australia have reduced their water over the last decade, the Darwin region has increased its water use. An average Darwin household uses 535 000 litres of water each year. That is around 1 500 litres of water per household each day, which is almost three times as much as other Australians. Most

water, 70 per cent, is leaked or used outdoors for irrigation, pools and ponds, boat and/or car washing with a high percentage of gardens being over-watered. Much of our water use can be reduced, by doing things like fixing leaks or having better irrigation scheduling, all while still maintaining our great lifestyle. By being more water efficient we will defer the need for expensive new infrastructure and save businesses and households money on their utility bills. Living Water Smart is a five year project that will help the Darwin region reduce water use by 10GL per year, equivalent to almost three months average water supply for the Darwin region. The project comprises eight key initiatives including homes and businesses, parks and ovals, accommodation, schools, hospitals and defence, recycling reticulation and smart metering. The Living Water Smart water efficiency team is now working with businesses to identify opportunities to reduce water use and save money. Working with your BUILDER Any kind of building work in the home, whether it is an extension, putting in a new bathroom, or repairs to the roof after a storm, is going to be stressful. Dust and dirt get everywhere, the work rarely goes to schedule, it always runs over the agreed costs and of course it is always the builder’s fault – or is it? In fact there are a variety of reasons why jobs do not always go to plan – bad weather, difficulties with suppliers and quite often clients changing their mind about materials or being slow with decisions. If there is a delay, the builder may have to move his sub-contractors elsewhere in order to keep them busy. Most builders have more than one job on the go at the same time; to do otherwise would involve paying people for doing nothing. Builders appreciate the area where they are working being kept clear of things like the breakfast plates or children’s toys. Also the skip they park outside for their debris does not mean you can go ahead and clear out the attic. Decisions on things like the colour of walls, or tap fittings should be made early; some custom-made items take weeks to deliver. If changes have to be made, they should be

made early, so that sub-contractors can be rescheduled without significant delays. Have a clear idea exactly what you want the builder to do while he is with you. If, for instance, you want a power socket moved in the lounge room, while the extension is being added at the back, let him know at the start, so that he can schedule it in on the days the electrician is on site. Don’t be greedy and expect something for nothing. Some builders will absorb additional costs as a matter of goodwill, but they have to earn a living the same as anyone else. Finally, always communicate: if you think something is going wrong say so.

T erritory We do things differently in the Territory so our Christmas celebrations should reflect our unique lifestyle. Glistening white Christmas trees and snowflakes don’t quite suit our climate, we lack the chimneys and mantel pieces required to hang wreaths and stockings from, and leaving candy canes hanging from the Christmas tree just results in a sticky ant covered mess! Embrace the vibrance of the tropics and work some tropical elements into decorating your home or table setting using things that make the Territory special. Colour and fragrance are the best starting points: Home grown blooms from the garden or markets lend

themselves to being arranged whimsically in salvaged or vintage objects and then set on the table. Try using old christmas tins with a jar set inside to hold water, different shape and size vases, ice buckets or trophies. For table centerpieces bring the lushness of the garden in and use banana leaves or palm fronds cut to size then layer these with frangipani flowers scattered across to give scent. Do away with the traditional red, white and green napkins and tableware and instead try bright florals, leaf designs, beach style multicoloured stripes or bold

polka dots and don’t be afraid to mix and match give a modern Tropicana feel - this time of the year as long as its cheerful, anything goes!

Get

agents

working

First National Real Estate Chief Executive, Mr Ray Ellis says home owners and buyers often fail to tap into the in-depth local knowledge, technology resources and experience that real estate agents have readily available at their finger tips. “The internet allows people to think they can do everything themselves and so they do not ask enough of their agents when looking to buy, sell or rent real estate, either as a home, office or industrial property,” Mr Ellis said. “Our network spends a lot of time, energy and effort developing systems, technology and training and our agents use these tools to their advantage. The combination of agents’ skills and technology means we can help a buyer, seller, tenant or landlord to access information on suitable properties, or find the perfect match quickly and easily, yet so few vendors or purchasers ask agents if they use such systems before hiring their agent. “When they do, the results speak for themselves. “One of our offices recently sold a home just 16 minutes after it was listed using our buyer matching system. Another recorded 3197 buyer views across 6 websites, generating 16

direct enquiries and 9 inspections in a recent social media campaign, resulting in multiple offers being received for the one property.” First National Real Estate is renowned for its technology-based systems that make the process of finding, buying, selling and renting properties to be simple, convenient and stress-free. “As one of the largest, if not the largest investment in your life, buying and selling property can be fraught with many pitfalls, but using the right agent can make it quite enjoyable, and even possibly exciting,” Mr Ellis said. “Our systems mean people are notified immediately when a property, or buyer, suitable to their needs becomes available. “But the onus is on the members of the public, whether they are a buyer, seller, tenant or landlord. They need to contact the relevant agent in their area, be fully armed with a well informed wish list, outline what it is they are looking for, be realistic in their expectations and they will ultimately benefit from the relationship.” Mr Ellis said property investors should also consider agents for renting and leasing properties, whether they are commercial,

Climbers AND

CREEPERS Climbers and creepers can also provide great privacy but they do need a bit of attention and care. Regular watering, pruning and fertilizing to make sure your climbers and creepers grow to their full potential and provide your garden with the screen or burst of colour you need. We are fortunate in the top end to have numerous creepers to choose from bougainvillea, pyrostegia, mandavilla, allamanda,to name a few. During the dry season the Bleeding heart vine in not that conspicuous as many of its leaves die and there are no flowers .But now with the rainy season about it starts to develop new branches and leaves and starts flowering again. It can climb up a trellised fence, but has regularly been helped by twining its branches in order to keep it in shape….. 122 December 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

industrial or residential. “Our agents are well versed in property across all sectors, and they have a range of systems and processes that support their property management portfolios,” Mr Ellis said. “But whatever your property needs are, search for an agent who combines systems and technology with traditional people skills and choose one that goes to great lengths to communicate frequently and unobtrusively with their clients. “We disseminate regular updates by text or email, keep clients informed of the latest listings and vacancies and ensure control is placed in their hands at all times. “Our systems provide our customers with a genuine advantage and have improved the efficiency with which we promote, sell and rent property.”

is a group of plants or vines which need support of some kind in your garden. Because climbers and creepers grow vertically in the garden they are great space savers and can be used to provide masses of foliage so are useful to cover walls, trees or a fence. They are so easy to plant into a big tub/pot and train them around archways or entrance areas to brighten up your garden. Ugly fence, ugly neighbours” well these are the plants for you…. So don’t be afraid, give it a go. Happy growing. Wishing readers a safe and fantastic festive season. ‘Til next time.
