Tighten your belt this new year

Do you have hard to lose fat? Are you physically active and within 5-15 kilos of your ideal weight? Do you have lumps, bumps and bulges of fat around your stomach, hips or back that you just can’t seem to lose no matter how much you exercise or diet? Most men and women face this frustration every day. Love handles, post pregnancy tummy, back fat or “muffin-tops”. Not much, but just enough.

Your Cool Solution The latest technology in body contouring and fat reduction, CoolSculpting, is new to the Northern Territory and only available with Darwin’s leading experts Katy Sullivan Director of Advanced Body Image, in consultation with Dr Ash Sankarayya. This state-of-the-art technology reduces the fat in selected areas by and average of 22% with only one treatment, with no down time and the best results possible without surgery. Initial consultations can be arranged by phoning 89856088 with Katy Sullivan.

What is CoolSculpting? CoolSculpting targets localised fat bulges that have not responded to diet and exercise in areas such as the stomach, love-handles and back. If you are one of many people who are around 5-15 kilos over your ideal weight then CoolSculpting is an effective, non-invasive solution to reshape these areas.

Exclusive to ABI This is the only Coolsculpting machine in Darwin and the NT be aware of imitations.

new year by Melinda Barlow

Yes it’s that time of year again. We are pulling on the jogging shoes, throwing away the cigarettes and buying new stationery to make long inspirational lists upon, in the hope of a new approach for a new year. Many of us go through this farce year after year, with nothing but a screwed up piece of paper on the floor to show for our big plans. But maybe that’s because we wrote boring resolutions. There’s no fun in starting the year with get fit, save money, give up smoking, if those hard things aren’t backed up with some joy. But this year, let’s agree things will be different! Let’s COMMIT PEOPLE! We can do this!!!! 2014 is the year for living life to its fullest and remembering what’s important. Get married! Travel! Have some babies! Buy a house, a car, a boat! Whatever your passion is, now’s the time to live it. There are many hardworking individuals who pour blood sweat and tears into their jobs, and forget the personal value of small rewards. I don’t mean buying yourself an ice cream on the way home from work either. I mean something big. Something from the bucket list. Like a holiday, or learning a new skill. What about a fishing adventure - catching that barra you always dreamed you’d catch! Come on – you’ve lived in the Territory too long now to have not ever caught a barra! Call yourself a Territorian. Hah – I’ll believe it when I see it! Health is always on the resolutions list, and often we live with situations, thinking in time they will ‘sort themselves out’. But sometimes they just don’t and enlisting the help of a specialist can really help get results, faster than you may think. You deserve to sleep well, get in shape and have a baby. If these things have been beyond your reach until now, maybe it’s time to outsource the problem? The beginning of one year of course comes after the end of another, which usually calls for some reflection especially on our careers. Thinking about the months that have just passed, and what you achieved or didn’t achieve, can all be turned into constructive thoughts by putting some strategies in place to ‘do better next year’. If something’s not working, the New Year is a great time to acknowledge that and move on to the next step – getting professional assistance. Sometimes all you need is an outside opinion to see things with fresh eyes and take a different approach.

Whatever your plans are for 2014, check out the expert professionals on offer in our New Year’s Resolution feature this issue and make some dreams come true this year!

“I want to catch a Barra” The excitement and exhilaration of catching a Barra is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Angler’s Choice guides share their techniques to catch Barramundi. Owner Emma Cartwright has been in the business for 12 years and said it’s a great feeling when you land a fish. “I was raised catching fish in Kakadu National Park, and it’s fantastic to do what I love,” she said. “We fish exclusively in the Dundee Beach region, which is 160km from Darwin, and we are the local Dundee Beach fishing charter company. The best fishing in Darwin ISNT in Darwin. We have our finger on the mark! “We have a fantastic team of friendly and experienced guides that will go the extra mile to ensure you have the best fishing charter experience. “They will also provide tips on using overhead reels if needed and talk you through landing your big Barramundi.” Emma said Barramundi can survive in both salt and fresh water. “When fishing at Dundee, we will target chrome coloured saltwater Barramundi. Saltwater Barramundi fight hard and make you really work for your catch. They also taste great! Love mud crabs? We can catch them too!” Emma said the Territory is renowned for its Barramundi but there is much more to offer in the waterways. “We are central to the best fishing in the Darwin region and many of the reefs that we fish are not accessible from Darwin harbour,” she said. “We also target a wide variety of species. There is nothing better than getting a trifecta – that’s when you land a Barra, a Jewfish and a Sailfish. “Well maybe catching a Red Emperor is better as they are a trophy fish. Some would say they fight dirty, are simply stunning to look at and highly rated as a table fish. “Golden Snapper and Coral Trout both look and taste magnificent and the reefs around Dundee Beach are packed full of them!” Emma said Anglers Choice have a stunning beach house at Dundee which is the perfect holiday spot if you would like to bring the family down for a weekend escape. It’s fully equipped for your holiday away from home. Hotel pick-ups and transfers to Dundee Beach are available on request.

“I want to get engaged” Are you thinking of popping the big question? Need some advice and help to choose that perfect ring? Many happy customers would not hesitate to share their secret. Creative Jewellers the family-owned boutique located at Darwin Smith Street Mall is the place to go. For the past 24 years, Creative Jewellers has been selling jewellery to Territorians and built its reputation for beautiful quality custom made pieces and excellent customer service. Simon said it is a family business. “Dad is involved in manufacturing and design and works in the sale room with myself and mum, and my brother is on the bench making jewellery,” he said. “We pride ourselves on being an independent local store that specialises in diamonds and south sea pearls. With many of our diamond and pearl jewellery handmade in the store.” Simon said these days it’s a mixed bag when it comes to who picks the engagement ring. “We get the traditional where the guy comes in secretly so it’s a surprise, then we have the couples who come in together, and then we have the women who come in by themselves to pick it for their partner to buy,” he said. “For those who don’t know what they want, we are here to help and take them step-by-step through the easy process.” “We also offer professional advice on the best diamond to suit your budget and taste.” “We recommend they give themselves time. You don’t want to rush the process, we want to make it perfect.” “Many come in with pictures or ideas. The classic single stone one carat diamond is still the most popular.” “Simplicity and classic designs are still favoured by most. If you let us know the shape of the stone and the colour of the gold, we will help you design and make a ring that you will treasure.” Simon said the advantage of picking your ring with Creative Jewellers is that it’s more personal and you are given excellent choice and services. “Our rings are not mass produced. They are unique, custom made and designed especially for you or your loved one. We work to each individual’s budget and take the hassle out of what is a special moment.” A: Shop 1/32 Star Village, Smith Street Mall, Darwin City Ph: (08) 8941 1233 E: sales@creativejewellers.com W: www.creativejewellers.com

“I want a good night’s sleep” Sleep disorders are more common than you think. Lifestyle and dietary habits can greatly impact on you having a good night of shut eye. If you have trouble sleeping, don’t worry there is help on hand. Darwin Respiratory and Sleep Health is a modern clinic based at the Darwin Private Hospital. It was set up just over two years ago in September 2011 and is led by a specialist Respiratory & Sleep Physician based in Darwin. Clinic Manager Finau Vucago said the clinic treats a range of Territorians affected with sleep disorders such as Narcolepsy, Insomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. “Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is the most common organic sleep disorder and is grossly under diagnosed in the general population,” she said. “Loud snoring, severe daytime sleepiness, lack of energy or concentration and waking up gasping or choking are some of the signs to look out for. “If you want to get checked out by the clinic you will need a referral from your GP. The first step in diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is usually with an overnight sleep study.” Finau said their sleep technicians monitor the patient during an overnight stay in hospital. “Sometimes the study may be conducted during the day for those with suspected Narcolepsy – where you can’t control when you fall asleep. We are also able to conduct studies at home in some circumstances,” she said. “Once diagnosed our team will advise the best way to treat the condition, usually via conservative and non-invasive methods first; such as adjusting lifestyle, dietary habits or through the use of a device called CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). “Surgery is usually the last resort, but will be explored if necessary in certain circumstances.” So what advice can Finau give to those of us who just want to have a restful night sleep - a night full of z’s rather than one counting sheep? “Avoiding caffeine, nicotine and excessive alcohol before going to sleep is a big one,” she said. “Avoid stimulation. For example don’t watch television or play computer games at bedtime. And a common one today is playing with your smartphone, put it down.” Finau also said to avoid long daytime naps and to go to bed when you feel sleepy. This clinic also treats other respiratory issues such as Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and Abestosis. Darwin Respiratory and Sleep Health offers a comprehensive service to aid with the management of sleep and respiratory disorders. Many of the services are covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

“I want to grow my business.” Starting a business can be daunting, and remaining competitive once you have been operating for awhile can at times be difficult. Kaz Lowery is well aware of the challenges businesses face and has set up her own consultancy to help guide and support Territory businesses. She says her ambition is to give back to the Territory and help local businesses be competitive and succeed. “The Territory is unique in that there are many long term family businesses. They really maintain the Territory feel and sense of community and culture. “My consultancy aims to help those individuals with their startup businesses and provide them the advice they need and the confidence and support to grow their business. “On the other hand with established businesses and larger ones I can provide the advice and support needed to refocus and refine their vision to remain competitive and successful.” Kaz has almost 20 years experience in business development and owning businesses. One of her clients is a company that she has helped grow hundredfold in four years. “It started with one truck and now it’s turning over a six figure profit.” So what are Kaz’s top three tips for those wanting to grow their business? Know what you do Some great advice I learned early on is don’t try to be everything to everybody. Focus on what you are good at. If you focus on all things it’s possible that you miss your mark for the sake of a few extra dollars and undue stress. Be clear on your audience and serve them well. Something that is lacking in business today is great customer service, which is so important. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising. Remember that people work for people There is so much focus on culture and leadership that other important things like connection are lost or forgotten. Employees are more loyal and productive when they feel a connection to their environment and feel that they are actually cared about. Passion is contagious When you love what you do it shows and rubs off on surrounding people. Showing genuine excitement and enthusiasm cannot be underscored enough. It can motivate your team to work efficiently, be more focused, feel more content and be successful at their job. This in turn supports you in achieving your business goals.

Civilizations throughout the history have celebrated the start of a new year. In those countries with a Gregorian calendar, celebrations start on the evening of 31 December and usually continue until the early hours of 1 January. Some other cultures celebrate at different times of the year - the Chinese in late January or early February and those cultures that follow the Julian lunar calendar celebrate in mid-January. In every culture, it is a time for social gatherings – a time to be with loved ones and to eat, drink and be merry. Australians love to celebrate the event, whether they live in a city or in the bush. Families and friends get together at home for a special meal, in the local park for a barbecue or at a restaurant to celebrate the start of another year. Increasingly fireworks mark the event. Darwin, like many other towns around the country, has its own very special firework display, but the fireworks in Sydney are considered by many to be the best in the world. It is estimated that 1.6 million people will gather on the harbour foreshore with blankets and picnics to watch the two pyrotechnic displays, one at 9.00pm and one at midnight. Approximately 2.3 million Australians will watch the televised event at home and one billion people will tune in around the world to watch Australia celebrate the arrival of another year. Some countries have their own traditional ways of celebrating a new year. In Scotland, Hogmanay is an event of much merriment. The 24

DarwinLife Magazine

weather is usually cold so people gather in their local pubs where whisky is a popular drink. At the stroke of midnight, people form a circle and cross hands and enthusiastically sing Auld Lang Syne to welcome the new year. The French traditionally celebrate St Sylvestre with a special meal which often includes foie gras and seafood, and a glass of sparkling wine or champagne. However, the younger generation usually prefer to meet their friends and go dancing. Some Spaniards eat a grape with each of the chimes leading up to midnight. It is thought that the practice started when some farmers realised they had a surplus of grapes and cleverly started the tradition to get more customers. Germans have a tradition of eating jam-filled doughnuts as well as a tiny marzipan pig as a token of good luck. On 31 December, the Japanese like to forget about all the problems and worries that they may have encountered in the old year and

instead concentrate on the future. Homes are scrubbed cleaned and are decorated with ornaments made of bamboo and pine. At midnight, Buddhist temples strike their gongs 108 times welcome Toshigami, the New Year’s God and to expel 108 types of human weakness. It is also that time of year when people reflect on their lives over the past year and resolve to change their behaviour. Despite the very best of intentions, very few people maintain their resolutions for many weeks into the new year. Ah well, there is always another year!

Valentines Day | DarwinLife

The Feast of Saint Valentine is a Christian celebration (well used to be anyway) celebrated on February 14th for one or more saints called Valentine. However a less vague version of the story is that a man called Valentine was performing weddings in secret for people who for one reason or another had been forbidden to marry. He was imprisoned for it and thought to have sent love letters from his cell signed ’From Your Valentine’. Because his name was Valentine. Of course. However Valentines Day became a romantic event in the 18th century when courtship was still a thing and people lovingly exchanged confectionery and handwritten love notes. Handwritten! What has happened to us?! Ah those were the days. Now we are bombarded with giant red hearts all over the shops, sometimes even before Australia Day and men all over the country shudder beneath the cold shoulder due to bad gifts that just did not express enough love. Or love in the right way. Or love to the right person. (PS this last one is bad). Anyway the important thing is that if it matters to the one you love then it matters. Got it? Traditional never fails so red roses will definitely do the trick for the ladies. But fellas – try to avoid the cello wrapped single rose from the service station. Chocolates also work wonders, as does champagne, or a romantic dinner. But all of these things are transient and let’s face it – a little clichéd. Personally I think you can’t go wrong with the home made approach. A surprise dinner at home, sunset champagne on the beach. Or when you can only say it in song, drag your beloved to karaoke and serenade them with the cheesiest power ballad you can find. If that doesn’t express enough of the love in your heart, there’s always a flash mob, or balloons tied to every pole between their work and home. Or the big one – a sparkly chunk of bling and a proposal. Because you know people – if you like it, then you really should put a ring on it. Before someone else does.

a New Year’s Resolution worth exploring? We all make resolutions on New Year’s Eve that we often don’t keep. Here’s one worth keeping! Many of us say: “I would love to volunteer but I’m too busy”, or: “I don’t know how to go about it”. Did you know that over 6.2 million Australians volunteer every year, and that flexible opportunities exist across the Territory in interesting , exciting and rewarding roles? It’s a great chance to meet new people and share unique experiences. You may only have a few hours a month, or want to do a few events a year - this can all be arranged. Have you ever considered landcare in a remote location, gardening in an urban community or botanical setting? What about driving, assisting the elderly and disabled, or just giving an hour to visit someone less fortunate than yourself ? Why not volunteer at a major event like the Darwin Festival, the Italian Festival or go remote and help out at the Barunga Festival? You can even volunteer with your

voice through community choirs such as Vox Crox or the Darwin Chorale. How about utilizing your personal skills to mentor a young person or just be a friend to a new Australian who is finding their new social environment a little bewildering? A lot of volunteering roles give you new skills and great training opportunities too. Come and explore volunteering in a safe well organized setting that respects you and your contribution. Make 2014 the year you DO volunteer.

Simplexity: THE 21ST CENTURY

SUPERHERO

We are a complicate bunch us women. I can understand why men find us so confusing. We want progress but we want time out. We want space, but we want connection. We want career, and we want family. We want health, but we won’t make time. We want wealth, but we want to spend. We want friendship, but we won’t call. We want life to be simple, but we make it so complex. We are an interesting group.

What if we could have it all? What would you be prepared to change? What you be prepared to do? Life is pretty simple, we need food, water, shelter, and air to breathe. If that is all we need to survive then why does life seem so complicated? Because we make it so. But the good news is it doesn’t need to be. On the other side of franticness and complexity is focus and simplicity. If you want to stop just managing and start designing the life you want, it is simple. 1. Stop and take a breath- that’s all you need to start. 2. Step back and review where you are at- be honest and specific. 3. Get over yourself- choose your attitude and lighten up.

4. Plan what’s next- prioritise what is important. 5. Step up- put into action your priorities. 6. Stick to your guns- focus on getting results that matter. Have fun!

…we needed to get rid of some negative emotions and limiting beliefs…

Are you needing a little business magic?… or Maybe you are wanting to change your life direction and achieve goals that you thought were not possible! You know it is good to wonder. We needed a little magic in our business and we decided two years ago that we would refocus our business direction. Both exhausted and feeling a little frustrated that things were so challenging with funding cut backs and over regulation we decided to commence the change. To do so we had to come to terms with what was holding us back in order to do what we really passionately wanted to do, as well we needed to get rid of some negative emotions and limiting beliefs. The 2011-13 years have been challenging, as we commenced our new direction we also had to deal with significant non business issues of personal illness and loss of family so the goal we had set in stone remained however the plans were like moving sand. As educationalists we have spent many years in the heart industry of serving people to support them to get jobs that

are meaningful to work in a career where they are passionate and get satisfaction in their lives. We have been coaching people since the commencement of our business. Many of our clients have taken some sensational leaps and have really changed their lives, they are real life examples of excellence. It made sense that we concentrate our new direction to include the passion that we felt about helping others after all we live our work and what better way to do that than by taking the formal steps of becoming qualified Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Master Coaches and Trainers. Introducing our new Business Wizardry three streams, three options for you to change your business and change your life. Have you experienced nagging self-doubts, are you carrying emotional baggage, limiting beliefs, do you know how to set compelling goals, do you have clarity in your direction? Join us on 14 January and find out all the Buzz of how 2014 can be your year of changing direction.

R esta u rant s u rcharges As we enter a new year we look forward to the numerous public holidays that the Territory has in the first 6 months of the year. For me, the long weekends allow more opportunities to enjoy the many wonderful restaurants Darwin has to offer with friends. Unfortunately, more often than not, those opportunities come with the additional Public Holiday surcharge. As an ex-publican/ restaurateur I am asked regularly about surcharges in restaurants and whether or not they are ‘legal’ or just a rip off. The confusion around surcharges is understandable due to the fact that when the Australian Consumer Law was introduced, there was a requirement that restaurants menus display a single pricing for their menu items preventing them from adding a surcharge to their food and beverage items on Weekends and Public Holidays. The single unit requirement has since been abolished and restaurants are free to add a surcharge to their prices provided they meet the following conditions: • The imposition of the surcharge must be displayed at least as prominently as the most prominent display on the menu of the price of the menu items or any other fee or surcharge relating to the

menu items; • The wording must include the words “a surcharge of [percentage] applies on [the specified day or days] “ • The surcharge must be transparent i.e. the reason stated for the surcharge must be genuine. There is no maximum percentage a venue can charge but a ruling by the Reserve Bank has stipulated it must be reasonable. The most common reason stated for the imposition of the surcharge is the increased costs of wages on those days due to penalty rates. Penalty rates range from time and a half to double time and a half so a surcharge of 10 – 15% doesn’t seem unreasonable in those circumstances.

Just as a final thought for those who believe the surcharge just makes it too expensive to dine out on those days, an alternative would be for the venue to do away with the surcharge and simply increase their prices across the board every day of the year!

N ew Y ear R esolu tion - or

This time of year can tend to be a bit stressful and expensive. There’s Secret Santa gifts to buy, end of year reports and reviews, holiday planning etcetera. For me it also seems to be the time of year when my licence expires, rego is due and all my household appliances suddenly cease working and require immediate replacement. Don’t get me wrong, I do love a good festive season, but sometimes before I know it I find myself watching fireworks ringing in the New Year and the turkey lunch where everyone was adorned in ridiculous paper hats feels like it was only moments ago. And New Year’s Eve means New Year’s Resolutions. I’m not a fan. I’ve never been good at sticking to them, and if I’m to be honest, I’ve actually never really understood them. According to google, The 10 Most Common New Year’s resolutions include, to eat healthy and exercise more, drink less, quit smoking, create a better work/life balance, volunteer, save money and read more. While all these resolutions are to be applauded, I think they should really be categorised as ‘good life advice we all should have paid attention to years ago’. In general, I think they stem from that moment of introspection as the fireworks explode and you think about all the things you didn’t do, or in some instances, all the things you did too much of. There’s an element of guilt involved and an inclination to focus more on the past than on the future. Not really conducive to the mood of celebration and joy. This year, I have pre-resolved to make a resolution that is achievable, one that I can celebrate and be proud of at the end of next year. Of course, I resolve to eat healthier, perhaps I’ll even take up jogging, I will participate in FebFast and I will save money, but I’m also going to complete something I wouldn’t normally do, something beneficial, productive and practical, something future focused which is after all what recognising the coming of a new year is surely about.

Now comes the hard part, choosing what to do. I’ve always wanted to learn another language, and I have always wanted to play the cello, but when I think realistically neither of these are resolutions that will be achieved in a year. I could start my French lessons and even fit in some time to screech away at the cello, but we all know I’m not going to be a fluent French speaking cellist come December 31st 2014. My boss has suggested that I complete the Diploma of Accounting. This scares me a little because spreadsheets and numbers seem to induce a sort of generalised anxiety in me. I’m working on this, and my boss, who seems to have a strange infinity with a spreadsheet full of figures, assures me that knowledge is power. Furthermore she believes if I were to complete the Diploma the anxiety would disappear. This is a very tempting idea particularly because I’m not really a fan of anxiety, generalised or otherwise. While I have been putting off the decision, my boss has kindly prepared a summary of the costs of study and the contribution she will be able to make in regards to money and time off work to study (yes, this was emailed to me in an excel spreadsheet attachment). Should I resolve to take up her suggestion I will defer my student loans to Fee Help so I can afford the Secret Santa presents and car rego and still have some money for my cello and French lessons should they eventuate. Hopefully this time next year I’ll be healthy and fit and be able to play Pachelbel’s cannon on the cello. And I’m going to call it early, come New Year’s I’ll definitely be able to complete my own tax return without anxiety and I will have a Diploma. Now I better get started on my other Christmas related tasks, the New Year is sorted.

There’s a stereotype in place in the NT that is understandable but undeserved. The Territory man is almost always depicted in the wild, with a gun, or a knife and a freshly caught animal. With a croc skin hat, and a boat or a quad bike. But we know better. Those of us who have lived here long enough to see them in all their glory know the Territory man is an undefinable entity. Today’s Territory man embraces his adventurous spirit and skillfully applies it to modern day Top End life. Nowhere is this more evident than in business. Like wrestling a croc with his bare hands, the Territory man makes negotiating the toughest deal look like a walk in the park. Their casual relaxed attitude comes in handy when the stakes are high and helps them keep their cool when times are tough. Through prosperity they are humble and through adversity become stronger, knowing when to roll up their sleeves and get dirty and when to stand quietly and wait for things to unfold. Being a city so isolated from Australia’s other major cities, Darwin has wide scope for diversity, and there is a freedom in corporate expression that suits our local businessmen. Territory men are well equipped to identify needs and service the local market, by tailoring their products and services to Territory clients and customers. Our men in business have to adapt to a broadly defined customer base, from no nonsense people of the land to modern day high flyers to our diverse multicultural population. This they manage with style and flexibility. The foundations of business in the Territory lie in a ‘yeah let’s give it a go’ attitude. An entrepreneurial spirit in a distant outpost is why we are here today and our businessmen continue to adopt the legacy of those who went before them, by throwing their hat in the ring with an idea, listening to their market and adapting to suit. Mick Carey MickS ALLY FAB

Mick’s a man made of steel Micks Ally Fab has fast become one of the most respected names in Darwin’s metal fabrication industry.

Working from the back of his ute just four years ago, Mick Carey never imagined his business would grow so fast. It took only six months before he hired a contractor and leased an 80 square metre shed. Six months later, he moved into a bigger premises, this time 200 square metres. And 18 months after that, in January 2013, he moved into his current Hickman Street workshop at Winnellie, with a 600 square metre shed, three tradesmen and one apprentice. Twelve months on, he has six tradesmen, three apprentices and an office manager, and there’s no sign of slowing. Mick says his staff, and the community are to thank for his fast-tracked success. “They say your business is only as good as the people you employ, and I have a great crew of very professional, reliable guys and I owe a lot of it to them,” he says. “Also our local clients. There’s always work with big companies that come and go, but our main priority has always been the locals, they’re the ones that will always be here and keep us in business.” Mick and his team are skilled in aluminium, stainless steel and mild steel fabrication, specialising in marine work 42

and yacht and boat modifications. Mick’s Ally Fab can also manufacture, maintain and repair a diverse range of other products, from custom hand rails and spa covers to vehicle modifications. Mick says he was always destined for a career in metal fabrication. He completed his schooling at an agricultural boarding college in Queensland in 2001, started his four-year apprenticeship in 2003, and worked for several years before buying a caravan with his wife and travelling Australia for 12 months. “I’m from Queensland originally but I’ve been in Darwin since I was eight,” he says. “I’ve always liked the lifestyle and the people here, but when we travelled Australia we couldn’t find anything like it, and then we knew for sure it’s where we wanted to be, so I set up shop. “Once you start a business you’re committed to the area, the locals you serve and the people you employ. They have families to feed and you have a responsibility to keep the work up.” Since employing a larger team, Mick has taken on more of a management role, meeting with clients, ordering materials and quoting on work.

But after a lifetime on the tools, he sometimes struggles to stay in the office. “It’s an easy option to jump on the tools and fabricate something and at the end of the day you can sit back and look at it and know you’ve accomplished something,” he says. “Being in the office I sometimes feel like I haven’t achieved anything. So it’s a very different role, but it’s important to keep the work flowing.” Mick and his wife now have a daughter, who is two, and are expecting a second child. Mick says becoming a dad was the highlight of his life, and he’s looking forward to spending more time with his family as the children get older. “Being in business, life does get pretty hectic, but I must enjoy it or I wouldn’t be doing it.”

De Silva Hebron /

A lifetime in law David De Silva was travelling around Australia when he discovered his passion for law. It was 1982 and he found himself in Darwin at the time of the Lindy Chamberlain trial. The case had already captured the attention of the nation, and David felt compelled to watch the proceedings, attending almost every day of the trial as a member of the public gallery. “By the end of the trial I was hooked, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer,” David recalls. More than 30 years on, David De Silva is one of the most recognised names in law in the Northern Territory. He established De Silva Hebron in partnership with James Hebron in 1994, and together they built a reputation as a respected local legal firm, with a focus on the business sector. With a team of solicitors and graduate clerks, who work in litigation, civil and commercial matters, De Silva Hebron is a breeding ground for leading law professionals - some of whom have gone on to practise overseas and throughout Australia. David says providing young lawyers with the opportunity to develop their skills was one of the greatest highlights of his own career, along with becoming his own boss after years of study. “After the Chamberlain trial I returned to study to complete my year-12 equivalent as a mature age student, and completed a law degree at Adelaide University while driving taxis at night,” he says. “Once my degree was complete, I was fortunate to secure a position as a Judge’s

Associate in the Supreme Court of South Australia with Justice Millhouse. I came to Darwin to undertake my articles of clerkship with Poveys and was admitted to practise in 1989. “I always wanted to be my own boss. An opportunity arose in 1993 to head up a Queensland based firm’s Darwin office. I accepted that opportunity and the following year decided to partner with James Hebron to set up our own firm.” David has lived in Darwin for 25 years, along with his partner Wendy and their three children. During this time David has had extensive involvement with sporting clubs and community organisations across the Northern Territory, including Australian Rules Football, tennis, hockey, gymnastics, soccer, horse racing and basketball. David has many other interests outside of being a lawyer, including chairing the Darwin Entertainment Centre board and being a board member of the Power and Water Corporation, Tennis NT and Crimestoppers NT. He is vice president of the Carbine Club, member of the RAAF Darwin Golf Club and Admirality Club, life member of St Mary’s Football Club, has volunteered at Darwin Community Legal Service since its inception and is a former director of AFLNT and GTNT. And if that wasn’t enough, David has recently finished a unit in Racing Law and Regulation conducted by the Masters Division of Melbourne University.

Friends Tim McDonald and Nat Brice defined who their clientele were, based on common needs, demographics, and location, and created systems to deliver a service that would satisfy those needs. After outlining a strategy on how to bring that service to the Northern Territory, and trusting in their natural instincts for technology, the duo created NT Phone Repairs - a mobile phone and tablet repair store that focuses on quality, and speedy repairs at an extremely competitive price. Located inside the post office complex in Cavenagh Street, this became the start of a burgeoning local industry. “When we first opened there was little if no competition for specialist iPhone and smartphone repairers in Darwin,” says Tim. “Over the past 2 and a half years, the industry has grown, bringing other repairers, and a more tech and repair savvy consumer to the market place. These could be viewed as limitations, however we view these changes as opportunities. It says that the industry that we operate in is growing, providing us with an opportunity to also grow with it.” Tim and Nat believe that transparency is incredibly important. When maintaining a successful business knowing your limitations

and being upfront about them, gathering client’s expectations and then managing them is paramount. “Taking a ‘cards on the table’ approach has proven to work for us,” explains Nat. “We are upfront about the product that we deliver, the price point and the time frame within which the service can be completed. As well as delivering within those expectations, we aim to go above and beyond every time. We manage expectations and then exceed them. We maintain complete openness throughout. There’s no smoke and mirrors when creating a successful business model. It works or it doesn’t and the consumer deserves and expects honesty.” NT Phone Repairs pride themselves on doing the majority of repairs as a same day service, so drop in and say hello during your next tech emergency.

AUTOSMART NT /

Chace Karpenko AutoSmart NT

A smart move for Chace Chace Karpenko is a name synonymous with Darwin’s motorsports scene. Starting his speedway career at the age of 10, Chace went on to win six state titles across five racing divisions. In 2009 he established his own team, Karpenko Racing but since 2011 has taken a step back from the action to focus on his business, which of course, still involves cars. Two years ago Chace purchased the Northern Territory franchise of AutoSmart – Australia’s largest trade supplier of vehicle cleaning products. Chace and his team have worked day and night to build and expand the business to service a growing number of clients not only in Darwin but across the Territory. “We only have three staff which I think is perfect for now, for a small team we all know what needs to be achieved daily to get the job done,” he said. Chace and the team have converted a 12-tonne truck into a mobile showroom, carrying an extensive range of automotive products including interior and exterior cleaning solutions, spray paint, sanitisers, wax and polish, paint and fabric protectors and aluminium brighteners. The business also stocks accessories

and workshop maintenance products, such as brake and electrical cleaners, penetrants and pressurised lubes, hand cleaner, buff pads, brushes, cloths, sponges, sprayers and pumps, safety equipment and clothing. AutoSmart’s client base is just as diverse, ranging from car yards and detailers to diesel fitters, earthmovers and mining companies. They also distribute to a number of panel shops and spray painters, but can service any business with a fleet of equipment or vehicles. AutoSmart NT has a large warehouse and stock can be despatched promptly to any location in the Northern Territory or north-west WA. The company is also committed to minimising its carbon footprint, being ISO 9001 and 14001 accredited. And while stocking heavy duty cleaners, AutoSmart focuses heavily on reducing the impact to the environment combining biodegradable products and recycling packaging. “We can call on any business and show them through the truck and give them a demonstration on the spot,” Chace said. “For example we often have calls on how to remove overspray or calcium stains,

I’m able to call past in the truck and show them how to remove it in seconds. “And no job is too big or too small. We can supply just one litre through to one thousand litres.” Chace says opening his own business in the automotive industry felt like a natural progression after a lifetime in motor racing. And like his racing career, his journey into small business was largely influenced by his late father, Ivan, who passed away in 2006. “My folks were always running their own small businesses so I guess that rubbed off on me as well,” he said. They always taught me anything is achievable, you just need to make it happen, and that’s my philosophy in running the business and providing the best service.”

Also on the Darwin team is Equipment Hire Manager Derek Caverzasio, who has been with the business for five years, and Business Development Co-ordinator Andrew Olsen who joined KI Group late last year. Andy said they were all drawn to the industry, and Darwin, for the same reasons. “We love working with so many different people and you have the freedom to get out of the office, meet with your clients and make a real difference,” he said. “It’s pretty rewarding to help someone find long-term employment, you can be helping secure a family’s future. Whether it’s people who’ve moved to the area or locals looking to find work, it’s just a great feeling knowing you’ve made a difference.” Andy says Darwin is a ‘land of opportunities’ and believes it is that opportunity that is luring new people to the region every day. “When I first came to Darwin I couldn’t

believe how busy it was,” he said. There’s a lot of growth, change, and housing construction. It’s one of the busiest places I’ve seen in Australia. “The climate is great and there’s just so much going on it attracts a lot of people. There’s plenty of work whether you’re in construction, mining or industrial. So whether you’re looking for work or for workers in Darwin, come and see KI Group.”

Tim’s Surf and Turf /

Tim Hayward Tim’s Surf and Turf

Make life memorable is the secret to Tim’s success Living life, creating memorable moments and having adventures keeps Tim Hayward energized and focused. It is one of the keys to keeping him grounded and being on the ball with his business. “I work seven days a week, 24-7 and I need to take short adventures. But they can’t be anything ordinary, I want it to be something memorable or a tick off my bucket list,” he said. “My last memorable one was sending my son to helicopter school, we then bought a R44 clipper 11 and flew from Darwin to Papua New Guinea.” Tim is the driving force behind Tim’s Surf and Turf, a Darwin institution that has offered great food at affordable prices and a friendly smile for 20 years. It is one of the few restaurants that has lasted and Tim thinks the reason is a mixture of things. “One of the tricks is to do whatever it takes to hang on to your good staff as they are the pillars of your business, and also treat both your regular customers and staff like family. Be consistent, firm and fair!”

And Tim sure does treat his staff well. In the past he has taken his team to Papua New Guinea, Bali, Jakarta, Hong Kong and Las Vegas. He often thanks key staff with personal gifts and amazing experiences. Tim has given loyal staff holidays, cars and many spur of the moment adventures. “We recently had a professional driver that does drifting (sideways) take us for a few laps around Hidden Valley.” “I foster loyalty and repay with memorable moments. I treat them as if they are family.” Tim said he has survived due to factoring in and budgeting for market fluctuations, being hands on, and good value for money. He has owned or set up 16 food outlets with his first one in Darwin being such a hit that he sold it at a profit within the first six months. “But clichés aside, I treat the customer

as a person not a dollar value. I have many regulars who have been coming weekly for many, many years,” he said. “The best form of advertising is happy customers and word of mouth. If they liked the experience they will come back and recommend you to others.” Tim added that another attraction to his popular restaurant is its resident croc. “Mr Bubbles – tourists love him!” “If your business is quiet, then something is wrong and may mean that no one is talking about your business positively. You’ll need to get motivated and put the spark back into your dream.” To find out more call Tim’s Surf and Turf on (08) 8981 1024 E: tims.darwin@westnet.com.au W: www.timssurfandturf.com.au Tim’s will reopen 29 January 2014. I N S P I R ATI ONAL WO MEN

BANKING & FINANCE As part of our continuing series focusing on the amazing women contributing to the Territory’s success, we put the spotlight this month on money. Yes people, it does mean more to women than just stuff that’s handy to shop with. Women have earned their place in Darwin’s financial services industry and the boys are having to graciously step aside in what has traditionally been a male dominated industry. The female approach has its advantages and a woman’s ability to multi task is a crucial one. That and a deep understanding of the economics of life in 2014 – as a single, or a family, whether you are unemployed or raking in the big bucks – these women have well and truly got it covered. Everyone has their own unique story where financial needs are concerned. Money and financial security are a part of life that we all manage with varying degrees of skill. Discussions about these subjects can also be highly emotional, and sometimes a feminine sensitivity can make all the difference to someone in the midst of a personal financial crisis. This month we meet a group of women who are helping Territorians to change their lives and shape their futures. Opportunity for financial exploration and discovery is never more available than right now in Darwin. If you believe the media, the streets are paved with gold and rivers of cash will soon be flowing through the CBD. It’s all very exciting but having a trusted and experience professional to help you navigate through it all is essential. There is also something of a community theme to this month’s selection. Local businesses, staffed by locals, with a commitment to the development of the community, means you get great customer service, and are treated as much more than just a number. These women understand that helping you helps the community and encourages you to continue to engage. This personalised approach means better deals for everyone and the security of knowing your service provider and their team are fully invested in your success. Oh and they also remember your name. So enjoy reading about what these women are up to at work these days, and here’s to a happy and prosperous 2014 with the help of Darwin’s women in banking and finance.

VISON money /

BANKING & FINANCE

Bridget’s vision for success By age 21, Bridget Headland held a senior management position with a multinational finance company. It was a high-flying role with a company car, regular trips to the big smoke and impressive commissions. Six years later, she is the founder and director of her own financial brokerage now operating in Darwin and Brisbane. Vision Money specialises in negotiating the best finance options for people looking to buy their first home, renovate, refinance or invest. Opening her own business was the culmination of seven years in the finance industry, and a personal aspiration to expand her own portfolio as a property investor. “I feel very fortunate that I get to do what I love every day,” she said. “I know it sounds cliché but it’s true.” Bridget’s career began in 2007 with GE. She experienced a quick career progression to become the general manager a year later. She then moved into a broker’s role with Wizard Home Loans, which later became Aussie Home Loans, and realised her love of the job. “As it works out it was one of the best decisions I have made in my career as I found my true passion – I love what I do and this shows when I discuss finance with my clients.” It also shows in her wall of accolades, including being the two-time winner of Aussie Home Loans’ top retail loan writer of the year. “It was a huge achievement for me considering I was up against over 250 retail brokers and also a great way to thank Aussie Darwin for the support over the last few years,” she said. Bridget also holds a number of awards for MPA Top 100 Brokers of Australia, Advisor Magazine’s Young Broker of the Year 2012 and multiple state awards. Vision Money specialises in providing its customers with more choice in brokers, lenders, commercial products and also agribusiness finance. “I noticed that while you could get your home loan from the bank or broker,

borrowers were at a loss about where to seek assistance to finance machinery, purchase a commercial property or complete a self-managed super fund purchase,” Bridget said. “While working as a broker I have helped guide hundreds of property investors to secure the right type of investment and helped them build a property portfolio based on a simple tried, tested and proven methods that many organisations charge thousands of dollars for. “The best part about my job is I don’t charge the clients. I get paid from the lender, so what would normally take my clients days in searching for the best product can be done in minutes in the comfort of my office at Tipperary Waters.” Bridget’s Finance Tips • Seek professional advice from people in the industry. • Discuss rates. There has never been a better time for your broker to negotiate your variable or fixed loans. While fees and rates are important remember the long term flexibility in a product can sometimes outweigh cheap honeymoon periods. • Set a plan and work towards it. With the right advice your first home or next investment property may just be around the corner.

Sophia Avramidis

Naomi Horton

Winnellie Branch Manager

Senior Relationship Manager

Sophia Avramidis always wanted to become a real estate agent – until discovering the world of finance in 2010. She joined ANZ as a personal banker and with the guidance of colleagues like ANZ Service Quality Manager Lisa Spencer and ANZ District Manager Steven Straub, progressed into management. “Coaching and developing staff to move forward in their careers and watching them become leaders is very rewarding, and one of the best things about being in a management role,” she said. Sophia spends her weekends camping, fishing and hunting.

Vicki Cosford Business Banking Manager

Alison Clark

Lisa Spencer

Alison Clark provides specialised banking products and services to those who live and work on the land. And as a former jillaroo – she knows what she’s talking about. Alison joined the ANZ team in 2007 and though she’s worked in a varierty of roles, she says the highlight of her career was taking on the agribusiness manager role. “The impact of the recent live export ban and the drought had a real impact on some of our client’s business and their personal life,” she said. “An important part of my role is listening to my clients’ experiences and providing them with advice that helps them with their banking needs.”

VickiCosford had a head start on most in the finance industry, joining ANZ straight after completing highschool. Almost 11 years on, Vicki is in a senior management position and loves the dynamic and challenging work environment. “The biggest challenge is keeping up to date with industry changes but this goes hand in hand with teaching me to be adaptable and flexible in the way I think and operate,” she said.

Service Quality Manager

They say you can do anything if you put your mind to it. And Lisa Spencer is living proof. She left school at age 15 to take on a hairdressing apprenticeship, moving from northern New South Wales to Sydney, then Perth, where she joined ANZ as a bank teller in 1988. She set her sights on management, which she achieved, and it took her toGeraldton, Karratha and finally Darwin 15 years ago. Today her role focuses on coaching and developing staff and has seen her work across Queensland, Fiji and Papua New Guinea in the past 12 months alone. “To see some of my recommendations in the Pacific implemented was fantastic, not only for myself but for the staff and customers.” 50

Naomi Horton was considering a career in accounting when she came across a banking job with ANZ in Adelaide. She worked there for five years before relocating to Brisbane, and rejoined the bank four years later when she moved to Darwin. Naomi has degrees in marketing and commerce and experience working in sales, which she said complemented her work perfectly. “My job is extremely diverse, and I like that I have learned a lot about many different industries,” she said. “My customers are local business owners who come from wide ranging walks of life and I am often inspired by what they have achieved.”

Lucia English Branch Manager | Bendigo Bank

A gift that keeps on giving Bendigo Bank has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to sporting clubs, schools and community groups across Palmerston and surrounding districts. The contributions have been shared from the profits of the Coolalinga and District Community Bank since the branch opened in 2006. Branch manager Lucia English says the benefits of having a local Bendigo Bank were recognised more than 10 years ago, and a community push spanning three years successfully secured the Coolalinga branch. “The local steering group did an amazing job in working to bring Bendigo Bank to Darwin,” she said. “It was a great example of what a community can do when they work together.” The branch employs six local staff and offers a full suite of personal and business banking solutions.

Among the staff is a new trainee, starting on her own pathway to a career in finance. The branch is set to continue growing, located just opposite the expanding Coolalinga shopping precinct and residential estate. That means more support for local people and financial benefits for the wider community. This year alone the branch has contributed $170,000 to the Bendigo Bank Foundation, which community groups can apply to for funding. It has also donated to several local projects, including a $20,000 grant to the Dundee Progress Association to fit out a first aid post. Lucia joined the branch in 2010 and

is excited by the growing number of possibilities the future holds for the bank. “I have seen the business grow from strength to strength and we are now in a position to support organisations on a larger scale,” she said. “To be a part of this and see groups benefit from this support makes my job very rewarding.”

Michelle makes finance easy Michelle Goody is in the business of making dreams come true. As the lending manager of Easy Loans’ Humpty Doo office, her days are spent finding the right deals in finance for local people. Whether you’re looking to buy your first home, or add to your investment portfolio, Michelle and the team at Easy Loans can help. After 15 years in the finance industry, Michelle says she couldn’t think of a better job. “It’s nice because I also live in Humpty Doo, I’m a familiar face, someone people see at school pick up, or the shops, someone they can get to know and trust and that’s what makes it so enjoyable,” she said. “You get to know people on quite a personal level because there’s so much emotion involved with buying a home”. “There’s always a feeling of excitement, that little ‘yipee’ moment when you know you’ve helped someone make their dream come true. It really is a feel-good job, it doesn’t really feel like work.” That passion has seen Michelle’s results skyrocket, this year soaring to be the number one home loan writer for the Commonwealth Bank in the Northern Territory, topping all other brokers. She is also in the top 15 transaction 52

masters of the PLAN Australia aggregator, while Easy Loans was named Plan Australia’s Business of the Year across South Australia and Northern Territory. Michelle is also listed in the top 50 brokers throughout Australia. Michelle’s success follows 15 years in the industry, starting with an accounting degree. After graduating from Central Queensland University in 1993, she joined NAB as a graduate banker in 1994. She transferred with NAB in 1998 to Darwin, along with her husband, and worked for another six years before taking a break to start a family. Michelle joined the Easy Loans team in 2006 and since then has helped grow the business to become one of Darwin’s largest mortgage brokers, while making Darwin her home. “I think for us it’s the casual outdoor lifestyle, we love fishing and camping and all of those things,” she said. “I think too because we’re orphans here, we don’t have family nearby, our friends have become our family and it’s meant we’ve developed very strong friendships which really makes Darwin feel like home.”

Michelle is joined in the Humpty Doo office by recently qualified broker Kaylene Mason, and supported by several women in the Easy Loans team including Michelle, Dallas, Rhonda and Leonie. Kaylene joined Easy Loans in January 2013, after 13 years working in a number of roles with ANZ, most recently as asset finance manager for Northern Territory and small business manager in the Winnellie Business Centre. Like many before her, Kaylene arrived in the Territory while travelling, and never left. “I love the Northern Territory and I love my job,” she said. “I get a buzz helping people fulfil their dreams, there’s nothing better than saying ‘Congratulations, you’ve just bought your first home’.” To find out how Easy Loans can help you visit www.easyloans.com.au

Three decades building a passion for people This year marks the 30th anniversary of Kerry McKenzie’s career in finance.

It was 1984 when she started her career in a junior role with National Australia Bank in South Australia. Quickly realising her passion for the industry, Kerry’s performance saw her promoted – all the way to Darwin – in 1994. She worked as a lending officer and personal banker before taking a year off to complete a real estate course in 2007. But when she was offered the opportunity to join AFA as a mortgage consultant, she realised her passion was in finance. “I think of myself as a listener, a researcher, a negotiator, an organiser and a communicator,” she said. “I am personally passionate about helping clients find the best possible loan solution, all for no charge. “I work with clients to determine their borrowing needs and abilities, select a loan suited to their circumstances and manage the process through to settlement. “Once settlement has occurred my service to the client does not stop. They are free to call or email me at any time with any new lending enquiries or questions about their existing lending.” Taking pride in building trusting relationships with her clients, Kerry has earned herself a number of accolades throughout her career, and is now a partner in AFA Mortgage Solutions.” And she says she is just as passionate about her work today as ever. “Helping clients with their home lending, whether it be their first home or their third investment property is still very exciting,” she said. “Sometimes you’re assisting with retirement planning by building on investment portfolios or you’re at the start of someone’s journey with their first purchase. “It is great to be working in a financial planning office. Having a trusted business partner allows you to continue to focus on what you’re good at while giving the customer the ultimate experience with someone you know and trust in a different field of expertise.” AFA Mortgage Solutions is a branch of AFA, specialising in brokering competitive home loan solutions. The company also works in partnership with Raine and Horne to assist clients looking to buy a home.

Donna Downs is the newest addition to the TIO team. She joined TIO in August 2013, bringing with her 12 years’ experience in the finance industry and extensive qualifications in finance and financial planning. She began her career as a bank teller in South Australia and soon moved up the ranks, buoyed by high level customer service skills. Donna has always had an interest in First Home Buyer and Construction loans. “It’s very satisfying helping a client through the purchase of their first home or construction loan because I love seeing the project come together,” she says. “I’ve built a house myself so I understand the anxiety and excitement that comes with it.” Donna says being a woman in finance has allowed her to get to know her clients on a much deeper level than other industries. “If you are driven, empathetic, up for a challenge, want an industry where you never stop learning and are highly motivated by customer satisfaction then finance is definitely an industry for you to consider.” Even after 25 years in the finance industry nothing makes Julie Timms happier than telling a client their loan has settled. And she is still setting the bar higher for herself every day. “I love to exceed my client’s expectations,” she says. “I sometimes set the bar so high I have to give that little bit extra every time.” Julie studied Biological and Physical Chemical Science at Bunbury College before changing her field of interest and going into credit control collection on bad debt. She says her greatest career achievement was becoming branch manager at TIO and now she can’t imagine doing anything else. “Women are usually the accountants in the family and are great at handling and juggling budgets,” she says. “Lending is very similar, where all the bills have to be paid and enough money left over to live on.”

Annette started her career in finance with TIO four years ago. In that time she has helped countless first home buyers navigate what can be a daunting journey, and says each day as a Home Loan Specialist brings great rewards and a sense of pride. “No application or client is ever the same and it requires a logistical and investigative mind to process each application,” she says. “You get to be a part of another person’s journey. Building relationships with people and helping them throughout their lives, from buying their first home to financing renovations, buying investment properties, paying for holidays and right through to retirement stability.” She is qualified with a Diploma in Finance and Mortgage Broking Management.

Growing up, Rita Nguyen wanted to be a plastic surgeon. So in 2007 when she took a part-time job in finance, to support herself through university it was never long term. But she soon realised she enjoyed her work and wanted to make it a career. Rita joined the TIO Home Lending team in July this year and is proud to say she has reached a point in her career where she truly enjoys going to work each day. “To not only love what you do but also be able to do it with the support and guidance of a fantastic team is a great achievement,” she says. “The most rewarding part of my role is being there every step of the way to prepare and support first home owners into their home. The excitement of settlement day is one of the best feelings.”

Natalie Wood knew she had a love for sales. But she wanted to work in a challenging environment – and home lending provided the perfect combination. Natalie holds a Certificate IV in Finance Mortgage Brokering through NSW TAFE and now has six years’ experience working in the industry. She joined TIO in October, 2011 and says it presents a fun and challenging environment to work in each and every day. “Being a responsible lender and telling someone their loan has been declined is always hard, but every time I get to tell someone their loan is approved, it’s a great achievement,” she says. “That and telling a client the last progress payment on a construction loan has been made are the best parts of my job.” DarwinLife Magazine

HINGSTON AWA R D W I N N I N G C H I N E S E R E STA URA NT I N A NULA SBS Feast Food Awards 2013, awarded Hingston Chinese Restaurant Winner of the “Chinese Salt & Pepper Squid,” and it’s clear to see why. - A little more later! Hingston and his wife Huai opened this small (seating 38) Cantonese style restaurant 10 years ago. Since then, it has become a favourite with lovers of excellence in Chinese cuisine in Darwin. Hingston is passionate about using local, fresh produce and makes his own dim sims and spring rolls. This man is a perfectionist and focuses on entrees and mains so there is no time for desserts. Entrées: You must try Hingston’s Homemade Pork Dim Sims (3) ($7.00.) I especially like the steamed variety. These dim sims are large, succulent and packed with texture and flavour. - A perfect start to a great meal. The award winning Salt and Pepper Squid ($22.00) will not disappoint. This generous serving of tender, crisp, crunchy and spicy squid was so light and luscious; we just wanted to go back for more. Yum! Yes. It was definitely a winner!

Mains: Crispy Roast Duck ($22.00.) Hingston’s duck has a delightful hint of aromatic flavour to the delicious crispy skin; just a hint, but it sets it apart. The meat is cooked to perfection; moist, tender and bursting with the aroma of fresh duck. Hingston only cooks a certain number of ducks each day so if you want duck, when making your reservation, order your duck then! Lastly, Prawn Ho Fan. Thick, Ho Fan noodle is a wonderful dish wet or dry. We chose Prawn Ho Fan ($22.00) wet with egg. I particularly like the wet noodles with egg as the egg is blended into the cooked dish just before serving so adds another dimension to this delicious, yet subtle sauce. Hingston’s is far from pretentious. It seats only 38 and has no tablecloths, but it is spotless. You have to book as patrons come from all over NT and interstate just to sample his great food.

The

Vic Hotel The Vic Hotel in the Smith Street Mall is doing $12 lunches and at that price I’m super keen! I visited the week before last and ordered a steak burger with chips. This thing was huge and ticked all the right boxes – big patty, fresh greens, melted cheese and a dollop of sauce. Very filling, so much so that I couldn’t finish it! Then this week I went back for the super slow cooked beef ribs with Jack Daniels glaze. Whilst the huge pile of brown and black stuff on the plate isn’t particularly pretty, it certainly makes up for it with super tender meat and a sticky flavour bomb glaze. Every meat lover’s dream and vegetarian’s worst nightmare come true on a plate. As much as I tried to polish it off, again I couldn’t finish it - not often that I get defeated twice in a row admittedly. The $12 lunches here are pretty hard to beat – cheap and excellent value for money. I’ll definitely be back for the DIY tacos and the other rotating specials on the board. There’s also a big projector where you can watch the Aussies smash the Poms at cricket with cold beer in hand. Win win.

Tasty and with

benefits

W E N

Imagine we had our very own local hero in a species of fish high in omega 3 fatty acids with proven health benefits and tasting fantastic to boot. Well we have and it’s Mackerel! There is no doubt that such a great tasting fish with proven health benefits should be in far higher demand. This is even truer when you consider this fish is ideal for the BBQ boofhead like myself. Mackerel cannot be mistaken at the fish retailers; their streamlined shapes are smooth and bullet like with their distinctive silvery skin and firm flesh. Best of all is its great taste - it could easily be the taste of the top end!! Mackerel lend themselves perfectly to simple preparation and also relatively inexpensive. Nothing easier than getting your fish monger to cut you a couple of 2 cm cutlets, a dash of olive oil and choice of seasoning (actually steak salt is great!!) and bang them each side on the BBQ until just cooked - perfect! Congratulations! You know what it is like to enjoy fresh, delicious, responsibly sourced seafood with a clear conscious. It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it? For those looking for some more finesse try giving the cutlets a light season with salt and pepper, heat a little oil in the pan or barbecue and cook for about 5 minutes each side then remove. In a pan add some garlic cloves, parsley, little

more salt & pepper, paprika and red wine vinegar heat for about 30 seconds then poor over your cutlets. How quick and easy is that. Still to this day it surprises me that some families only treat themselves to seafood on special occasions; what is it about seafood that spooks home cooks? I’d have to say it would have to be one of the easiest ingredient to cook.

Like everything, seafood tastes that much better when it’s harvested close to home. With fresh seafood unloaded right here in Darwin every week why choose anything less. www.facebook.com/supportntcaught.

BAKEHOUSE & CAFE

For more information call: (08) 8981 2647 or drop and see Terry, Bron and their team at Shop 3A Fannie Bay Place, Fannie Bay.

Brian Jones and Deirdre Black formed a business partnership three years ago and bought Ben’s Bakehouse. Since then the pair have worked hard at expanding and improving the range of food on offer. Deidre said the store offers a huge range of sweets every day. “Since everything is made in store we are continuously developing and changing our range,” she said. “As an independent bakery we are not limited in what we are able to make. This means we have old favourites like jam filled doughnuts and chocolate éclair’s through to some of our more recent creations like a Turkish delight cheese cake. “And just because you can’t see something in the cabinet doesn’t mean we can’t make it to order.” Deidre said it was well known that Bens Bakehouse now offers special occasion cakes made to order. “We custom make everything from wedding cakes to birthday cakes. I love doing kids’ cakes and I’ve become quite adept at recreating favourite cartoon characters for the young or the young at heart,” she said.

B Skin

DarwinLife | Fashion, Beauty, Health & Fitness

is for

B-complex vitamins enhance beauty by working together to counteract damage caused by free radicals - molecules that breakdown healthy cells and contribute to aging and disease. Deficiencies of any of these B Vitamins can lead to dry, grey skin, dermatitis, wrinkles, acne, rashes, hair loss and weak, splitting nails. For healthy skin, Vitamin B must be incorporated daily through application of topical skincare products and dietary Vitamin B. Vitamin B is easily destroyed by food processing, stress, medications so daily supplementation may be required. Types of Vitamin B The B-group vitamins are a collection of eight vitamins essential for various metabolic processes within the human body. So the more we consume Vitamin B – the more our skin feels happy. Vitamin B-1 is an antioxidant that helps to increase blood circulation. It also protects us from the effects of ageing, smoking and alcohol consumption. Vitamin B-2 helps to keep skin healthy and prevents acne breakout. Vitamin B-3 is becoming a very popular

Everyone’s usually heard of Vitamins A and E when it comes to skincare, but Vitamin B is also essential to skin health and plays an important role in maintaining beautiful skin, hair and nails.

ingredient in cosmetics due to the fact that it acts as a moisturiser by reinforcing the natural barrier function of the skin. Vitamin B-3 and B-5 are both very helpful in the process of skin regeneration and slow the signs of ageing skin. Vitamin B-5 has shown the capability to reduce oil formation and thus, reduces acne formation. It has also become very popular in skin care industry because of its ability to assist in retaining moisture. It helps hydrate and hydrated skin appears plumper, healthier and shows signs of ageing much slower. Vitamin B-5 is also needed for healthy growth and production to fight eczema. Vitamin B-7 is required to make skin, hair and nails healthy. It also helps to treat specific skin diseases like seborrhoea dermatitis, acne and eczema. Vitamin B-12 helps to regulate your skin’s pigment production and location, preventing hyperpigmentation - the darkening of skin in certain parts of your body. Diet The highest content of Vitamin B is found in fish. Salmon, trout, tuna and cod are few

varieties that contain a high amount of Vitamin B. Lamb, beef, poultry, eggs and dairy food also contain a high amount of Vitamin B. Avocado, pomegranate, dates, watermelons, and some berries are high in B complex vitamins. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, potatoes, and squashes and legumes like soy beans, kidney beans and lentils also contain Vitamin B in significant amounts. Topical Skin Products The use of Vitamin B as the key ingredient in skincare products is relatively new and therefore you won’t see many on the shelves. Ultraceuticals has a B2 Hydrating Serum ($79) or the Victorian Cosmetic Institute sells the Synergie Priority-B Serum ($110), Aspect Extreme B17 or the Aspect Multi B Serum ($118.80 each) via their website www. thevictoriancosmeticinstitute.com.au

Medicine of the f uture . Dry eye treatment for today.

Dry eye is a frequently occurring condition that can adversely affect quality of life and be potentially sight threatening. Optimel is an ophthalmic product for dry eye and ocular surface disease. It is a sterile, preservative –free, high efficacy, antibacterial honey product. It is prepared from a mixture of honeys from Australia and New Zealand Leptospermum species, more commonly known as Manuka, Tea tree or Jelly bush. These honeys have anti-bacterial and healing properties and have proved to be assistive in the treatment of dry eye, meibominan glands disorders and corneal conditions. Honey has been a documented in history as an effective treatment for a range of

ailments, including skin conditions, sore throats, gastrointestinal disorders and sore eyes. The use of honey is documented from as early as Aristotle (350 B.C.) to current trends of traditional management in Africa, Middle East, Pakistan, India and ophthalmic management in Russian, Egyptian and Lebanese ophthalmology. With continuing research the use of honey is predicted to expand. The Optimel honey product is now being recommended and their use monitored by optometrists who manage dry eye and corneal conditions.

TO THE

Despite our best efforts we generally start each new year in less good shape than we would like. Hardly surprising with the loss of routine over the holiday season and good habits giving way to joyful excess. Never fear it isn’t hard to regain control and take shape but what is the best way? Reflect on your diet and set some trends for the year. Mostly just limiting your intake of fat, sugar and carbohydrate will work quite well in combination with exercise but there are many diets being offered up at any given time as the best new weight loss solution. Examples are the ever popular Atkins diet, the Paleo diet, the HCG diet and the fasting diet. The Atkins diet targets carbohydrate which in excess produces a raised blood sugar leading to fat deposition and it isn’t without merit as the modern diet is full of carbohydrate rich foods. Reduction of carbohydrate causes ketosis and the use of fat as the energy source so breaking down fat deposits. The diet is necessarily high fat and could have long term damaging effects. The Paleo diet aims to replicate the diet of our Stone age ancestors teaming up meat, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and eschews refined compounds. The 70

DarwinLife Magazine

premise is that this is what our species is genetically adapted to. The HCG diet uses injections or oral drops of tiny amounts of HCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) a hormone produced in early pregnancy combined with a very low calorie diet (VLCD). The HCG raises the rate of metabolism using stored fat and can result in quite considerable weight loss over a few weeks. Interestingly a benefit of the HCG is to reduce hunger during the period of dieting. The fasting diet or 5:2 diet or fast diet involves reducing your calorie intake to about a quarter of normal (500kcal) for two days of the week. It may well have additional health benefits such as better blood pressure, cholesterol and also benefits on insulin sensitivity. Confusing?? Not really as a lot of these diets are really just an extrapolation of what we know makes sense. To some extent you should choose a diet that you can understand and reasonably adhere

to teamed up with keeping active. For those left over stubborn fat deposits there are good devices out there to refine your shape such as CoolSculpting and MedContour though these are not weight loss strategies. This month’s contribution has been provided in conjunction with Kristina Kyriacou who is a Health and Beauty columnist with her own popular blog. http://kkristinak.blogspot.com.au/

How to apply

Beauty

B

L

O

G

Don’t know how to apply your eye shadow properly? It’s in the brushes. Girls stop using that funny little applicator that comes with your makeup. Go out and invest in a set of proper makeup brushes, Napoleon Perdis or even Priceline have the perfect brushes. Your brushes need to be cleaned after each use, just make up a spray bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol and a couple drops of lavender, spray you brushes after each use to clean them, they will dry almost immediately, then once a month wash them in Shampoo and Conditioner, treat them like this and they will last a life time. To start your kit, you need a Flat Shaper, Full Coverage and a Contour brush you could also add Precision Angle Brush if you want, four brushes is plenty to get you started. Go onto the Napoleon Perdis website to get an idea of what I’m talking about. To apply a natural eye, start with a light beige using your Flat Shaper apply this to your eye socket, then apply a darker shade with your Contour brush to the outer corner and across the crease line, add a highlight of a very light shadow, under

the eyebrow, blend the three with your Full Coverage brush then apply eyeliner with Precision Angle Brush add some mascara or better still false lashes, and voila, beautiful natural eyes. Don’t forget your eyebrows, please have them shaped by a Beauty Therapist, all you need to do is brush them with an eyebrow brush apply some eyebrow pencil to define them and if you have any wayward hairs, spray a tiny bit of hairspray onto your finger then wipe it across your brows to keep them in shape. Have fun practising and don’t be afraid to try bright colours once you know what your doing. Au revoir.

Before you decide that you’re thighs are too fat or you’re hair is too shinny or you don’t like the way your clothes fit, first make sure that you’re not surrounding yourself with jerks. Jerks like celebrity mags, big advertising companies, “frien-emies” and even the voices in our own heads will tell us that we are not good enough. Well you know what? I’m here to tell you that you ARE good enough. You are more fabulous than you have ever let yourself believe. And that, my lovelies, is why you should want to make a change for the new year. Not because you are not already good enough, but because you are so good, that you deserve the best. You deserve to eat the best, cleanest, most delicious food ever, not because it will “make you lose the J-Lo butt” but because it will nourish you. You deserve to take the time to exercise, not “to get rid of tuck shop lady arms” but because it will make you strong and give you energy. You deserve to pamper yourself, not because “those glossy magazines say so” but because it will make you feel good in your own skin. Make 2014 the year that you make a real change, a change to value yourself enough to put YOU first. The better you treat yourself, the better you can look after others and the better example you set for those around you. Need some help to start loving yourself ? In addition the time it takes for the pain to improve also varies, some episodes of pain will improve within a couple of days whereas some take weeks. If you’ve ever wondered what causes that I’ll explain below. The answer is how much irritation or compression occurs on the nerve surrounding the injury. When a nerve is irritated or compressed this affects the blood flow to the nerve, this disturbance starves the nerve of vital nutrients and as a result the ability for the nerve to conduct electrical impulses reduces. Depending on the amount of pressure applied to the nerve determines how much the impulse reduces and hence the severity of the patients symptoms. • Pressures up to 50mm Hg cause changes in blood flow to the nerve without a significant reduction in impulses. This causes mild pain without many other symptoms, this improves within 2-3 weeks. (Most common). • Pressures between 50-100mm Hg cause swelling around the nerve and causes sensations like tingling and numbness in

addition to making people appear twisted in their stance. This episode can take up to 6 weeks to heal. (Quite common). • Pressures beyond 100mm Hg cause far more severe symptoms like paralysis and bladder dysfunction. These kinds of presentations usually require many months of care or in some instances immediate surgery. (Less common) So that’s why different people have different types of back pain and that’s also why we all heal at different rates it all comes down to how much pressure the surrounding nerves can handle before it starts to affect their function. *Takahashi, K. OFF YOUR BUTT There are a million and one diets, exercise machines, and plans that tell you how to lose weight, how to stay fit, how to get rock hard abs. The stress of navigating that minefield alone is enough to make you hit the junk food aisle. But what really works is the obvious - eat a varied and balanced diet and most importantly – exercise. I know, you hate exercise. But you just need to DECIDE. Follow these steps. Decide you can do it, then get off your butt and start exercising.

1. Get some exercise gear. For walking, get tight fitting black leggings, lightweight fitted tops and a zip up sleeveless vest, good runners, a hat you love and sunglasses. These clothes make you feel skinny because they hug your shape, but the vest keeps you warm on cold mornings AND hides your wobbly bits. 2. Drive to find scenic walks. Drive to the beach and walk along the cliffs. Drive to the botanical gardens and walk around them. Or just step outside and walk around your own block. Map out a few routes in your mind and measure them with the car’s odometer. Having a choice of 2km, 5km and bigger walks means you can spread your effort out a bit across the week.

3. Keep yourself entertained. Get an ipod or some kind of MP3 player. They can be the difference between a walk or a sleep in on the cold dreary days. Get into podcasts. Some go for 15 minutes – listen to one till it ends, then turn around and walk back listening to the next one. This keeps your mind occupied and helps you to time your walks. Or load all your favourite music in, hit shuffle and go. 4. Moving is better than not moving. The key thing is that you’ve got out and done it. If you have a late night and feel too bleary eyed, give yourself a break – walk around the block, or walk to buy yourself a coffee. You don’t have to walk on strict guidelines. Twenty minutes light exercise every day is a start. 5. Walk first thing. If you hate exercise then walks in the morning are much easier to manage, and easier to stick to. Set your alarm before bed, lay out your gear. You need 5 minutes to get up, clothes on and out the door, then 20 – 30 for your exercise, before you’re home again, in the shower, kettle on and ready to start the day.

1. Loading Loading drills can encompass anything from placing a barbell onto a rack to an atlas stone on a barrel. The basic function of loading drills is to pick up something heavy from the “dead” position and put it onto something sturdy around waist or chest height. Yes, it’s really that simple and will make a great substitution for Deadlifts (lightbulb moment...) Kick off your workout with Loading Drills first, putting the majority of effort into the set. 2. Pull-ups If you can’t do more than 5 decent pullups (that means all the way up and all the way down kids) then your pull-ups suck. The only people who hate doing pull-ups are the ones that can’t do them, and therefore never do them. So swallow

Awesome Exercises that yo u ’ re not doing . . .

It’s fair to say we are all guilty of doing the same old exercises time and time again, flogging the proverbial dead horse. Although we all have our favourite exercise, our body needs new stimulus to create a new training effect, so flogging that horse time and time again just won’t cut it. your pride, cut out the “ oh I’m heavier than you so it’s harder for me” nonsense and start practicing. Like right now. When you follow Loading Drills with pull-ups, they’ll seem harder than usual. Just persist and commit and before too long you’ll be smashing them out. 3. Car Pushing Flat tyres are a nightmare, but pushing cars without flat tyres is awesome. There is literally no learning curve when it come to pushing a car, making it a very safe and brutally effective exercise. Grab your keys, grab a mate and head to the nearest empty car park. Crank out a few set of 60 seconds of pushing, and allow yourself a full recovery. Don’t forget to bring the bucket. Variation is one of the fundamental principles of strength and hypertrophy

training, that being said, variety for the sake of variety is detrimental to long term gains. Try sticking to each new idea for 4-6 weeks before you get all excited and change to something else. Stay Strong, Wes

Healthy Habits The Healthy Palmerston program, an initiative funded by the Australia Government in partnership with the City of Palmerston, is now making it easier than ever for residents to get moving, regardless of their current fitness level. For less than a dollar per week, members can choose to attend over 20 different activity sessions run locally in Palmerston, until 30 June 2014. To sign up for the low-cost program, members must live in Palmerston and hold a current concession or student card. A great way to ease into exercise is with the Healthy Palmerston Boab Yoga classes specifically designed for beginners, run by local certified yoga practioner Alissa Rogers. Held on Wednesday mornings at Gray Community Hall, the classes allow students to bend the body and still the mind through a series of easy postures designed to help students enjoy everyday living. The gentle, low impact form of exercise has a number of benefits including improving flexibility, maintaining muscle condition and creating more energy. Incorporating relaxation, postures and conscious breathing, the one hour classes are open to all ages and abilities. Come along and leave your worries at the door – enjoy a gentle stretch and some quiet time. For those Palmerston residents who prefer to work out at their own pace, try out the new ‘exer-site’ equipment recently installed at Confalonieri Park, Gray and President Park, Driver. These free to use facilities have been designed to be within easy walking distance of each other, creating a fitness trail for residents. Best of all, they’re available for anyone to use so everyone can get a great workout, at their own pace, at any time. For those residents interested in trying out the new exer-sites, visit Council’s website for suggested activities, as compiled by personal trainers Leah and Garrith at Famfit NT. Don’t forget to always warm up, and start slowly to gradually build up the intensity of the exercise, suitable to your fitness level. For more information on the Healthy Palmerston program visit Council’s website www.palmerston.nt.gov.au or call 8935 9922. Registration forms can be filled out at Council’s customer service desk, level 1 Civic Plaza, 2 Chung Wah Terrace Palmerston. DarwinLife Magazine

Sattler Christian College Sattler Christian College offers quality education for children from 3 - 5 year olds in the Early Learning Centre through to students from Transition to Year 9. Dedicated Christian teachers work hard to offer challenging, broad based Christian education that provides opportunities for each child to reach their potential through rich, purposeful and dynamic educational experiences. A key principle for Sattler is that this endeavour is undertaken in partnership with parents, assisting them in their Godgiven mandate and responsibility for the nurture and education of their children. Principal Allan Long says “Helping students to turn knowledge into wisdom, is a key priority at Sattler Christian College in Bees Creek. The school motto is “Growing in Wisdom, Learning to Love”, which emphasises that education involves the growth of the whole child, with a “hands-on” curriculum approach that helps students better understand themselves, each other and the world they live in.” Nestled in a lovely bush setting, in the rural area of Darwin, Sattler Christian College offers quality education that nurtures and develops the whole child. Sattler Christian College provides a small

school setting where children will not get lost, but be loved for who they are and spurred on and equipped to reach their potential. Sattler’s dynamic camping program caters for the change in student’s capabilities, development and needs. As students progress through the years so does the ability for them to thrive with increasingly extended lengths of time and challenges offered through different camping experiences. As well as the camping program, excursions and incursions are an important aspect of the educational programs offered at Sattler Christian College. They provide opportunities for students to build their understanding of classroom learning by experiencing the ideas and concepts in practice beyond the classroom. Sattler Christian College is a partnering community, learning together to live life as God intended, offering hope for the world. If you are considering enrolling your child at Sattler please contact Sattler’s Enrolment Officer, Kathleen Higgins. She will be able to guide you through the next step and answer any questions you may have about the school.

Holiday at home

Take a stay-cation. The Territory has recently been named by National Geographic Traveler as one of the top 20 trips for 2014, so now’s the time to show your visiting friends and relatives exactly what is so special about our Top End!

Get up close and personal with a croc. In just three different locations, all within an hour’s drive of Darwin, you can dive with crocs, fish for crocs, hold a croc and learn everything there is to know about these incredible reptiles in a crocodile museum, or board a jumping crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River, where you will be awed by their sheer mass as they propel themselves out of the water for a bite of lunch. Experience Darwin’s WWII history by bike. Start at the East Point Military Reserve visiting the Darwin Military Museum and Defence of Darwin Experience, exploring the bunkers that still remain. Take the bike path along the foreshore right into the city and on to the Esplanade where you will find the USS Peary Memorial of a gun salvaged from the sunken USS Peary vessel, and the Cenotaph which overlooks Darwin Harbour. Down at the Waterfront Precinct you will find the WWII Oil Storage Tunnels, and if your legs aren’t exhausted by now, finish your tour at Charles Darwin National Park which was part of the network of military sites established during the development of Darwin as Australia’ northern defence line. With a harbour more than twice the size of Sydney’s why wouldn’t you want to take a cruise at sunset? Choose from a number of vessels operating across the holiday season – it’s a sensational way to enjoy time off and simply indulge. Indulge in a free back massage. There’s nothing like poising yourself under a spectacular waterfall cascade as some of the world’s purest waters rumble ecstatically over you. The water hits that perfect spot and from head to toe every muscle is pulsing to natures soothing rhythm. We recommend Buley Rockhole and Florence Falls at Litchfield National Park, Leliyn (Edith Falls) outside of Katherine, and Robin Falls near Adelaide River. Sometimes you just need to see things a different way. Take to the sky and see the Top End, including Kakadu and Katherine for an experience like no other. From the moment of lift off to touch down, you will be captivated by the breathtaking sights of the Top End. An airtour, whether by light aircraft or helicopter, is an adventure that will exceed your expectations by giving you superior access to unique locations in an exclusive journey of discovery that may not be possible year-round by road. For more ideas visit tourismtopend.com.au or call our friendly and knowledgeable consultants on 1300 138 886. The Visitor Information Centre is located at 6 Bennett St in Darwin City. 84

NASCAR TOURS After travelling to the US to NASCAR events with friends, David realised that NASCAR tours would be a fantastic holiday for motorsport fans. David started his own tours because he saw a gap in the Australian Market. David has modeled the tours on his own experiences and favourite things to see and do in the US and given them the personal touches that a motorsport fan would appreciate. The difference between Aussie NASCAR Tours and other tour providers comes down to the personal touch and experience provided by tour guide David Ling described by many as a down to earth, funny bloke. David has been involved in motor racing for most of his life. He is currently racing a HQ Holden and a Commodore Cup Car, organising race meetings in the Northern Territory, as FRIDAY 28 FEBRUARY SATURDAY 1 MARCH

well as playing an important role in managing the National HQ category. He spends most of his free time involved in motorsport and is passionate about all types of racing. David runs three NASCAR tours a year with out the itinerary below to get you thinking. If you are interested in this trip get in touch with David as soon as possible. W hat ’ s t h e C a r ?

It’s a Mygale Formula Ford 2008 – RED – the only colour for racing! Built only for the racetrack. “We purchased the car a year ago, and haven’t had to make any modifications to it – it’s perfect for the job! It was in great condition when we bought it, and it already has a history of winning many championship races around the country. It has a Ford Duratec Motor, and it’s one of a kind in the Northern Territory, so we are pretty proud owners.”

Thomas, who is 15, is following in Dad’s footsteps! Danny used to race at Hidden Valley, and with Thomas’s ambition to be a V8 Super Car Driver one day – you can see the passion for motorsport is in the family. Thomas has spent three years racing Go-Karts around Australia, and is stepping up a notch now, doing plenty of practice on the track with his Mygale Formula Ford. “It’s amazing to drive, and has helped develop my skill and ability,” says Thomas, and you can see that he means business. No doubt we will be hearing a lot more of this young man, and his Formula Ford car!

“NO ONE KNOWS Y O U R PA S S I O N L I K E S H A N N O N S.” The passion, the pride of ownership, the sheer emotional attachment – no one understands it better than Shannons. So when it comes to insurance for your special car, daily drive, bike or even your home, there’s only one person you should talk to – a fellow enthusiast at Shannons. OF THE MONTH

DISCIPLINE Children and the Importance of

Self-Discipline “Because of their size, parents may be difficult to discipline properly.” P.J. O’Rourke

How long have you lived in Darwin? A year and a half. What keeps you here? I love it here! I love the weather, the people and the lifestyle. It’s a beautiful place to live. How do you keep in shape? I love my body balance class! I like to exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. What’s your favourite indulgence? Gummy bears. I was recently bought giant gummy bears as a gift because I love them so much. As far as modeling goes what has been your greatest achievement? I was in the state finals for Miss Galaxy 2013 and I am in the state finals again this year. Hopefully I will take home a title or even the crown this year. What three words describe your personality? Outgoing, funny and motivated What is your version of the perfect day? I love lounging by the water with a beautiful view. My perfect day would be spent at Litchfield with some delicious fruit smoothies and the waterfall to look at. Looking back at 2013 what was the highlight? I adopted both my dogs from the RSPCA in 2013 and they bring me so much happiness. They are the biggest highlight for me. How will you celebrate New Year? With my loved ones. I want to start the year the way I intend to finish it, with those I love close to me. What is your New Year Resolution? To stop shopping so much! Maybe I’ll be able to save money to go overseas and then I can go shopping there!

Discipline is a word we frequently hear used. It represents something most of us rarely direct toward ourselves. Adults generally feel the neighbour’s kids don’t get enough of it. However, any person who enjoys any degree of success will be quick to tell you that discipline is to success, what carbon is to steel. The mark of superior performers are people who can give themselves a command and then follow it. If we want to be successful in whatever we are doing, there will be a number of activities we will have to engage in that we may not be fond of doing. This is where discipline enters the picture - self-discipline. What I teach children about discipline is that discipline is the ability to act accordingly or on time. Discipline in martial arts is having the mind power to control situations and to be able to push yourself to consistently improve performance. Selfdiscipline is required when it comes to doing those things that you don’t want to do examples I give to kids are things like making their bed in the morning or doing their homework. Having the discipline to follow through on all of the little things add up to make the big things much easier. The bigger things fall into place if you

have the discipline to do all the little things right. In our classes I encourage the kids to have discipline - if they forget their uniform they get twenty push-ups. This is to reinforce to them the importance of discipline to consistently bring their correct uniform and to encourage them to take responsibility for their actions. You need discipline when you train - to make sure your uniform is correct, to train hard, ensuring you’re on time. You do those extra push ups. All of those little things add up to discipline.

“To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.” Buddha

PART TWO

by Melinda Barlow

D E L I G H T Following on from last month’s renovation feature, this month we bring you more bright ideas and brilliant inspirations from some of Darwin’s best home and lifestyle providers. Darwin has a great selection of businesses, products and services that help you to get the job done. If you have some time off this holiday season, why not put it to good use with some home repair and rejuvenation? Nothing occupies kids and tires them out like working outside around the house. Sure you’ll probably have to bribe them but it will be well worth it. A few small jobs that tidy things up set the wheels in motion for bigger and better improvements, like many of those offered by the stars of this month’s feature. The relaxed approach in the Top End and our abundance of space means often we accumulate things around the house. Materials we collected for projects we thought we might get to, old broken bits

of furniture we thought we might fix, and piles of timber we planned to build stuff with. It only takes a phone call or an email to have someone at your door to help clear that stuff away and guide you to bigger and better options. Clear some land, put in a pool, or maybe turn the one you have the colour it’s supposed to be – you know, so people can swim in it! Do some pest control, get some lights fixed, or start ecostyling your abode. There are all manner of things that can be done to make life just that little bit better. Regardless of your budget, change can happen, all you need to do is decide to take the first step. Now is a great time too as many businesses have extra time on their hands. The wet season is not a hindrance to many businesses outputs so give them a call, you may be surprised to find they can come faster than it might take you to change your mind.

New Year

RenovatingTips & Tricks 1. Sit in each room of your home and think about what you love, what you like and what you loathe about the room. Be objective about the things you loathe – what can you change within your budget? 2. Organise to have your home cleaned from top to bottom – you’ll be amazed what a difference that makes. Part of keeping your home clean is keeping pests at bay. Every New Year organise to book your pest inspection – no more pesky ginger ants! 3. De-clutter your home – toss those unloved nick-nacks (aka dust collectors). 4. Look in cupboards for items that you love and have meaning – display them. Groupings of three or odd numbers work well. Tie in a common colour. Assorted shapes and sizes also work well together. 5. What is your furniture like? Does it match the mood of the room? Add some new pieces – we live in a tropical environment so look for pieces that work that look. 6. Is your pool clear and clean, are the pavers around it in good condition? Check the condition of your outdoor furniture – adding bright cushions and new beach

towels can brighten up an outdoor area. 7. Bring the outdoors in with plants – succulents are mini sculptures, group different textures and sizes together for interesting displays. Fill an awkward corner with a larger, leafy plant – be sure to pop it on a plant stand with small wheels so you can move it around. Add an orchid to your bathroom – it will love the humidity. Lastly group three or more pots of colour on a shelf for an instant room change. 8. Light is known to brighten your mood…it also lifts the feel of a room. There are ways to add light to your home other than with costly electricity. Look at the available choices of Solatubes on offer. 9. Does your backyard work for your family? If not investigate what you can do to change it…with the help of a civil contractor it can be moulded and landscaped to suit your needs. Maybe add a shed for storage. 10. Lastly, do one room at a time, take your time and renovate to suit your lifestyle, involve your family and enjoy the process. Happy New Year!!

Keep your pool crystal clear with Crystal Pool Maintenance & Supplies Every pool is different, so let us tailor a maintenance program to suit your lifestyle. We can help you maintain your own pool or take advantage of our on site pool maintenance service. Don’t forget this is the wet season so: t Always run your cell at 100% output, with all lights running. t Empty the skimming basket daily t Run the filter for 3-4 hours in the morning, 1/2 to 1 hour at lunch and 3-4 hours in the evening The best piece of advice we can give you is to have your water tested regularly.

NEW YEAR

WITH THE NEW YEAR COMES NEW TRENDS IN HOME FURNISHINGS, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN. SOME THINGS WILL CARRY OVER FROM 2013, OTHERS WILL MORPH INTO VARIATIONS OF CURRENT STYLES AND THEN THERE WILL BE SOME COMPLETELY NEW CONCEPTS. MY PICK OF THE EXCITING PARTS OF WHAT IS TO COME:

Bold colour: Pantone the world-renowned authority on color for nearly 50 years have released there 2014 colour range and all of the range is pretty spectacular, My personal favourite of the new collection is Hemlock- a soft seafoam blue green that I think suits our hot climate. Bold blues and greens will dominate, Infact green will become as important as blue has been recently and will prove to be for the future season. Strong blues will continue to inspire with shades that balance between the natural and the artificial. There will be a move away from neon colours, and more focus on mature and nature-inspired bright lime and yellow tones. Purple is also here to stay though bright expected shades of purple won’t be as relevant and the new purples shades are inspired by deeper more sensual tones of the colour. Pantones ‘Radiant orchid’ is lovely and one to watch. Modern will move to Modest: The wildly popular industrial modern style of 2013 will morph into a more classic and modest look this year, While concrete, stone, metal, and wood will still be popular we can expect a more classical relaxed feel with the use of earth shades and raw metal finishes. Minimal home styles, seen particularly in kitchen and bathroom designs were typical but this will change with the use of rustic and more organic furnishings coming to market.

Self-Expression will grow: Ornamentation, Splashes of bold colour and colours mixed together, people shouldn’t be afraid to express their personality and show off personal items in eclectic displays. Layered textiles and the use of different finishes can be methods of self-expression as much as furniture choice has been. Eco-friendly items: Taking inspiration from Mother Nature. Earth-friendly building materials as well as building practices will be popular and kitchens and cabinets with no added formaldehyde and non-toxic glues, binders, and finishes will rise in demand. Urban Downsizing: Downsizing continues to be a long-term trend. This year will see people interested in living in smaller spaces that are closer to major amenities rather than larger houses in the suburbs or rural locations.

ustralia goes on holiday in January – but don’t bank on burglars doing the same. Empty houses and quiet streets are a great incentive for enterprising rogues, so make sure when you shut the front door and head off for your fortnight of relaxation you leave behind a home that is reasonably secure. Valuable information on home security is available from the various state police websites. The Queensland Police Service, for instance, has a checklist you can run through in a couple of minutes – any ‘no’ answers could be weaknesses which an intruder can exploit. Sophisticated alarm systems are worth thinking about if you have an expensive property which will attract thieves because of the potential for rich pickings. A British businessman spent $50,000 on a security system which included 16 CCTV cameras to protect his $6 million home. The system alerted his mobile phone while he was on holiday in Spain that his burglar alarm had gone off. Through his laptop he was able to get vision of intruders smashing through a door, so he phoned his local police and then watched as they arrived and arrested the offenders. That makes for a good story, but for most of us a security system of that complexity is well beyond our means. A simple and inexpensive solution such as deadlocks on

doors and locked windows are estimated to cut the likelihood of burglaries by 90 per cent. Criminologists maintain that if a professional thief is absolutely determined to break into a property, nothing will stop them, but the vast majority of break-ins are performed by casual individuals looking for some easy money, often to feed a drug habit. If the house appears as if you are serious about security, they will more than likely pass you over. Finally, enlist the help of any neighbours who may be around while you are away. They can draw curtains at night, remove and store any mail or circulars poking out of the letterbox and generally check there is nothing around the premises that suggests they are empty. You can return the favour when they take a vacation. For additional tips on home security visit homesite.com.au Australia’s premier home and garden website. Further information: Call 1902 973 555

Gibson C ivil Contracting

As a child, Wayne Gibson loved playing in the dirt. As an adult, not a whole lot has changed. Only now, he does it for a living. After more than 20 years working in the civil earthmoving industry, Wayne started his own business, Gibson Civil Contracting, in 2008. It started as a one-man operation with one bobcat. Today he has a team of five men, four bobcats, a 12G grader, loader, side tippers, five-tonne excavator, water trucks and a small dozer. The business growth has allowed Gibson Civil Contracting to take on far bigger jobs, working for major construction companies and other large projects including the Bellamack Gardens, Northern Transportables site duplication and Leanyer Sub Station. “I think some people still think we’re still the bobcat guy,” Wayne said. “It’s a bit bigger than that these days.” Gibson Civil Contracting specialises in shed pads, industrial compounds, driveways, stormwater and culvert drainage, machinery hire and landscaping. The business is now also a CAL accredited contractor. “We do everything from house pads to 20,000 square metre industrial yards,” Wayne said. “And we have a no job is too big or too small attitude, but we never take on more than we can handle. “Some people can fall into the trap of saying yes when really the answer is no and then the customer gets let down. But we never double book or say yes to a job we can’t do. “So you know if we say were going to be there, we’ll be there.” Wayne arrived in Darwin as a four year old, at the same time as Cyclone Tracy. He spent 17 years in Katherine, but has always lived in the Territory. He has a wife and two children, and it sounds like they’re following in dads footsteps. “They’re both into their tip-truck toys, so I think so,” he said.

SELL

IN A BALANCED PROPERTY MARKET As property markets across the country become more balanced, both buyers and sellers are set to be winners if they follow some simple rules of engagement.

The latest industry figures show the number of homes for sale is now more aligned with buyer demand, creating a balanced market in most states of Australia. And while this heralds good news for sellers, as competition increases somewhat amongst home buyers, it also means there is less room to negotiate on price. And in this situation, information becomes king where home buyers need to arm themselves with as much research and information as they can, so they are fully informed of local trends and similar property sales in the areas where they want to buy. It’s also advantageous for them to get advice from their local real estate agent, especially one they feel comfortable with and trust. Home buyers should set themselves a clear budget, secure conditional

pre-approval financing and monitor wider market intelligence to keep ahead of competing buyers. For sellers, the key is meeting market expectations by setting realistic prices and to secure the services of a reputable, trustworthy real estate agent who will guide them through the process, including what price to set and how best to prepare their property for sale. For tips on buying and selling property in a balanced market, visit www.firstnational.com.au or call our office on 8942 8942

WONDERFUL

waterlilies

Waterlilies grow in still or slowly moving water, so in a pond make sure that you keep them away from fountains because that can damage the leaves. The pads are able to float because they are full of lightweight packing tissue and this gives them buoyancy. The surface is waxy and water-repellent and this is where the air-breathing pores are kept. The stems underneath act like ventilation shafts and they will take the oxygen to all parts of the plant beneath the water. Waterlilies add grace to any pond and many varieties are available to suit our climate or size of pond, with some even small enough to grow in a bowl on a patio. The tropical varieties have the most beautiful blooms and are delicately fragranced. Some of the most luscious plants that you can grow in water include the Elephant’s Ears or Cunjevoi Alocasio macrorrhiza. It is an Australian plant that thrives in tropical conditions and only needs to grow in moist soil. If you already have a naturally moist spot in the garden, this plant could be considered to help save water. Taro Colocasia esculenta loves wet feet and they can be grown with trickle irrigation. There are some very attractive varieties, and some that can be grown as a crop at home, but they need very wet soil and must be grown in tropical conditions. Taro is very easy to propagate. Simply divide the plant; remove the leaves so that the plant doesn’t dehydrate. Being adapted to water, it is 104 DarwinLife Magazine

the water pressure that keeps the leaves erect and sometimes the excess water can be seen as beads on the leaves. Just plant the divisions back into the pot. Don’t waste the leaves as they can be used as a vegetable like spinach. Papyrus plants are ancient Egyptian sources of paper, and add an incredibly unique tropical look to the pond. Like other Tropical Bog Plants, Papyrus will vary in size depending upon variety; however they all have long green stalks with green foliage plooms on the tops. This is the giant papyrus plant.. Dwarf papyrus is derived from the giant papyrus. As its name indicates, it’s a smaller version, but its stems are still strong. These plants can be invasive, keep control of them in your pond by keeping them in pots and cleaning them up every few months. The genus Cyperus comprises a group of handsome, water-loving sedges, many of which are wonderful additions to aquatic garden features. The dwarf papyrus produces green, mop like heads on sturdy stalks that reach 1-2 feet above the water. Aquatic plants are adapted to using very few nutrients, so when you are growing them don’t use an ordinary potting mix and don’t use garden soil as they have far too many nutrients in them. Unused nutrients will only grow slime that makes life very difficult for fish. So when you do grow them get a specially formulated potting mix just for aquatic plants.

Water gardening is increasingly popular, and the range of plants that you can grow in water and moist soils has increased dramatically in recent years. In choosing plants be aware of their individual needs. There are three basic water zones when considering plant selection: bog or marginal water’s edge - plants grown in these areas do not like drying out; shallow water; deep water. This knowledge will help you to grow them well and maybe even save some time and water. Short of space in your backyard? Easy, create your very own unique water garden in a pot... So until next time, enjoy your time in the water garden. Cheers for now...
