Continuing our series focusing on great women doing amazing things, this month we focus on the women in the Top End’s real estate industry – our ‘Women in Real Estate’. Whether flying solo, teaming up or taking Darwin by storm as a female only force to be reckoned with, there is a freshness to the industry these days because of their contribution. Many have started at entry level and worked their way up to positions of leadership today, and others have ‘fallen into it’ and discovered that this was what they were meant to do all along. The real estate industry can be tough and competition against agents and agencies even more cut throat, but these women are committed to their profession and don’t blink at doing the hard yards while maintaining poise and grace and ensuring the client is the number one priority at all times. You know what they say – if you want something done, give it to a busy person. Men may scoff but we all know women hold it all together, so adding a high powered real estate career to being a wife, having babies, running a household, raising a family, and generally having a life really is just another thing to add to the To Do list for many of them! Their competitive advantage is that Darwin’s women in real estate can apply their own personal life experiences to their practice, so they not only help you buy or sell a house, but they are careful to know in their approach that this was or may become your home, or a significant part of your financial future. Having an understanding of the needs of a single woman, or a family is an important requirement when dealing with property transactions and sometimes the feminine approach is what seals the deal. So read their stories, get inspired and feel proud that Territory women are doing such great things.
WHEN SELLING YOUR HOME IT NEEDS TO STAND OUT FROM THE COMPETITION MY TOP TIPS Planting or adding pots of colorful annuals makes a yard more welcoming. Consider planting on the nature strip but just be sure the plants don’t grow too tall or block vision when reversing. If you`re on a busy street add hedging like Murraya and Lillipilly for privacy and reduce noise. Dressing up the edges of your path or driveway gives it a softer look. Mix ground covers with grasses or Lillies and add Gingers, Hibiscus, Cordylines & Heliconias for colour between the green foliage. Water features can add the relaxing sound of trickling water or simply just add a birdbath. Give paths and driveway a high pressure clean. Curves in the borders give a sense of space. For healthy green lawn add a weed and feed treatment and don’t cut too short. Add fresh double mulch to beds which is economical from the Darwin Tip to make beds look rich and great food for the plants, remember no wood chip as it attracts white ants. Perhaps paint or replace your old fence. Use containers with colour at your front door. Does your front door look
welcoming? if not clean, paint and dress it up or get a new one. Also finally give a facelift to your mail box. Give me a call early when preparing for the market for cost effective free advice as it can add as much as $20,000 to your sale price. Consulting a reputable nursery for advice on suitable plants is also a good idea.

Jan Hallagan and Jennifer Neill believe communication, team work and opportunity is what makes O’Donoghues First National Real Estate stand out from the crowd.
J EN NI FE R NE I L L Property Manager | 0488 289 009 E: jennifer@ofndarwin.com.au
Jan has been a top achieving residential sales agent since 2005, including the past three years at O’Donoghues. Jennifer started her career as a property manager at O’Donoghues, and within 18 months is managing the agency’s property division. And despite working in different areas of real estate, they are still very much a part of one overall team. “Open communication is something we do at O’Donoghues, not just within particular teams but throughout the entire agency,” says Jan. “If I get good feedback about a property manager I pass it on, and same if there is an issue.” “This is why I think we are so successful,” adds Jennifer. “Because we have great teams of people in the office who share information, we can jump on to things straight away.” And the pair believe this approach is one that all clients- sellers, buyers and tenants alike – appreciate. “Our business is really about the people,” says Jan. “When you do the work and you do it the right way, by caring and fostering relationships, then everything really comes together.” Jan, who is often called the “zen agent” due to her love of yoga and Chi Kung,
ran a successful hair dressing business before entering real estate, for which she was nominated for NT Business Woman of the Year. Her business management and excellent customer service skills have carried across into her real estate career. “Real estate is about people and their needs, we help them solve their problems by listening, responding with solutions, building trust, and in time forming relationships for life,” she says. Jennifer came into property management with a personal interest in investment, owning three properties with her husband. After spending ten years in project management administration, her transition into real estate was smooth, thanks to support from O’Donoghues. “O’Donoghues gave me a chance,” she says. “I didn’t have any experience, but they brought me in, I got my licence, and within 18 months I went from being the rookie to managing the division. “I found I had a real love for property management, and I think part of my success stems from understanding where property owners are coming from, as a landlord myself. “A good property manager will really look after the property and
communicate with the owner when something needs doing.” And both believe a major part of their success comes from a high level of customer service “We pride ourselves on knowing our clients’ and what they want and need. They aren’t just another number,” says Jennifer. Jan agrees. “What I enjoy most about sales and this business is the happy endings. You are making changes in people’s lives. “This is a great industry to be in.”

Residential Sales Agent – Elders
Gennie Cox is still going strong after 16 years as one of the Territory’s top residential sales agents.
For the past 15 years she has worked out of the same office in Palmerston and believes a strong commitment to customer service, ongoing training and a caring approach are the keys to her success. Gennie began her working life in cosmetic sales in Darwin pre Cyclone Tracy. She relocated to NSW following Tracy, but returned 16 years ago and immediately entered the real estate field. “I’ve enjoyed it from the outset and I guess I fell on my feet however I don’t say that lightly because real estate isn’t something you can just decide to do and be instantly good at,” she says. Gennie attributes part of her success to a commitment to achieving the best out of each listing for both vendor and purchaser, whether they are local or interstate. This means ensuring the property is well presented and maintained throughout the sales period and up unto settlement day. “I make a 100 percent commitment to every property,” Gennie says. “It’s not just about the sale, it’s about getting the property through to settlement, dealing with different inspections, trades people as well as making sure maintenance is kept up-to-date. “Little things, such as ensuring lawns are mowed, garden beds maintained, picking up dropped palm fronds, and removing any signs of a vacant property before a viewing can make all the difference.” And it is this commitment that means her clients are completely happy with her service. “You are dealing with the biggest transaction most people undertake in their lives and you have to take that
responsibility very strongly,” Gennie says. “You can’t be flippant about it. I work hard to ensure a buyer moves into a home that is clean and tidy and that the seller is walking away rapt with the result you have achieved for them.” Gennie works within a small team of other agents, including daughter Sue Cox and newest team member Mark Seeliger. She believes working as a team achieves better results, with the agents on hand to share information within a supportive environment. “We have a very strong team. I truly believe in the saying ‘together everyone achieves more’. I have a 1800 phone number as well so If I’m on another call the phone is re-directed to another team member, so somebody is always available to clients.” Gennie’s commitment and passion for her work saw her named the 34th best Real Estate Agent in Australia for 2013 by the Real Estate Business Magazine – the only Territory agent to make the rankings. She has also been the recipient of the REINT’s Salesperson of the Year Award three times as well as the NO 1 Agent for the Elders team.

Leanne White almost chose a career in the travel industry. But her love of real estate won out, and 18 years later she is still going strong.

“I did an Associate Diploma of Business to upgrade my skills after having children, and was actually interested in going into travel,” Leanne says. “But I got a job as a receptionist in a real estate agency, and it made me realise I would actually like to be a property manager.” After just three months Leanne moved into residential property management, and hasn’t looked back. She has spent the past 10 years working for Colliers International Darwin, and now oversees the entire property management team. “I’ve definitely seen a lot of changes in the industry,” Leanne says. “When I first started in the real estate industry property management was always seen as the bottom rung of the ladder. “There’s been a change in the way property managers are perceived within the industry. It’s a profession now, and it’s often the biggest part of an agency’s business.’ Colliers has about 400 residential properties on its books, which Leanne oversees with a team of three property managers, an assistant property manager, and an accounts administrator. A typical day involves phone calls with clients and tenants, rental appraisals, property viewing, training, advising and managing staff. “The great thing about Colliers is we work well as a team and have great staff,” says Leanne. “Communication within our team is excellent; everybody is on the same page and aiming for the same result. Management is very supportive especially in relation to introducing new technology to enable us to provide a more professional service.” Leanne believes that a good property manager needs patience, excellent communication skills, and a very high attention to detail, in order to do their job well. “You need to be a people person, and you have to listen to people,” she says. “Often you are the meat in the sandwich between tenant and landlord, and you have to be able to convey things in a way that both parties can understand and accept. “We are managing owner’s assets, so we need to make sure that everything we do is correct and to the best of our ability. You have to get it right every time.” And to this day, Leanne has no regrets about choosing real estate over a career in the travel industry. “I don’t regret it because real estate has actually allowed me to travel,” she says. “I have been to interesting places such as Egypt, Israel, China, and India. “Work has taken up a lot of my time over the past 18 years, so to travel on my holidays gives me the best of both worlds.”

Residential Sales Executive, Colliers
Maria Georges has seen a lot of changes in Darwin’s real estate industry over the years. Starting out as a residential sales agent 12 years ago, property prices were a lot lower and many national real estate agencies were yet to have offices in Darwin. Today, the industry is booming. “It is incredible how much it has grown,” says Maria. “Back then some properties would stay on the market for up to a year. “I remember a block of land at Cullen Bay sitting there for sale at $180,000. We really have seen big changes.” Maria got her start in real estate after moving to Darwin from Sydney, where she spent 15 years in cosmetics sales. She has spent the past nine years working for Colliers International, where she is involved in all types of residential sales. “I love selling beautiful homes,” Maria says. “And Colliers has a great team with great support. The Colliers team is like my second family, and working in such a supportive environment makes all the difference.” Maria believes customer service is the key to being a successful sales agent, “You have to put the clients first, before the dollars,” she says. “Real estate can be a competitive industry, and I’m not a fan of that side of it. I focus on putting the clients first and offering the best service I can.” As well as selling property, Maria enjoys the creative side of real estate, where she believes it is important to be innovative in your approach to marketing. She was one of the first Darwin agents to film a property report for Sky News, and frequently uses social media to engage with her clientele. “Real estate is always changing and evolving, and I like to use innovative ideas in marketing and research to keep things fresh,” she explains. “It’s really important when selling a property to know your market well.” And after 12 years in real estate, Maria has no plans of leaving the industry any time soon. “I really enjoy what I do, I love real estate,” she says. “Every day, I get to see people achieve their dreams of buying their own home and living their dream life.”

But she wouldn’t have it any other way, and finds time to manage her busy work and home life. “I go to the gym each morning at 5am, before going home and organising our three kids for school and day care,” she says. “It can get very hectic at times, and it is a real balancing act, but I really love what I do.” Kristy began her career in real estate as a personal assistant in 2001. Within her first twelve months, she had undertaken study to gain her real estate qualifications. After a couple of years, she moved into residential property management. She spent five years working in residential management before making the move into commercial property management after wanting a change – and she hasn’t looked back. “This is such a great career to get into, there are so many different pathways to explore and find what suits you, such as residential or commercial property management as well as
sales,” she says. “I really enjoy all aspects of my job including managing the office and overseeing the team. It’s a great mix.” Kristy says that to do this job you need to be a people person, and have that rapport with your tenants and clients. And she believes she has found the perfect mix at Halikos. Through the Halikos Group’s continuous support and involvement in the local community and charity groups, Kristy has had the opportunity to become more involved by volunteering with Canteen - one of the three charities which Halikos group are a part of through the Halikos CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) committee. The Halikos CSR committee arranges regular fundraisers within the company to raise funds throughout the year and create community awareness. “Halikos is about more than real-estate, it is a great, familyorientated company,” she says. “It’s just like one big family.”

McGees Property is a 100 percent Territory owned company that prides itself on its commitment to providing its clients with the right outcomes. And it achieves this with a solutions orientated team that is always focused on delivering the best in customer service. Shannan Murphy, Annette Gore, and Siobhan Guilfoyle make up part of this team. Shannan Murphy joined McGees Property Darwin in 2007 as an administration assistant, seeking a career where she could spend time interacting with people. Today she is the head of the Commercial Property Management Department. “One of the best things about managing property is the strong relationships you build,” Shannan says. “When someone puts their trust in you to manage their investment you have a responsibility to take care of it as if it was your own.” Residential Sales Consultant Annette Gore agrees. “Selling real estate is really about people and
their wants and needs,” she says. “Finding solutions to those needs and seeing buyers so happy in finding their home is incredibly rewarding and satisfying.” Annette has always had a long association with McGees Property Darwin – husband Martin was a founding director in 2000. But it was only recently that she retired from her 30-year teaching career to try her hand at real estate sales. “Work-life balance is much easier when you are working with your partner,” she says. “It is a great bonus to be with each other every day.” Organisation is the key to a successful worklife balance, as is working with a great team of people, says Shannan. “Ensuring the workplace has a good feel is very important,” she says. “And we have a great, tight-knit team at McGees, we are friends as well as work colleagues.” Siobhan Guilfoyle moved to Darwin from the UK earlier this year, and started at McGees
Property as a valuer in September. And she has embraced the differences between the UK and Darwin real estate market. “Being from the UK I didn’t often encounter anything other than the occasional cat or dog, so seeing all of Darwin’s wildlife on home visits is something I am adjusting to,” she laughs. On a more serious note, Siobhan says the highlight of her job is client satisfaction. “I thrive on being able to provide a service to clients that they are happy with,” she says. “I enjoy interacting with people and building and maintaining professional relationships.”

Principal and Director Elaine Mills Property Management
Elaine Mills knows how to get things done. Her career in property management arose out of a need to have her own investment properties looked after properly.

November 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine
“We own our own investment properties, and little issues kept cropping up,” Elaine says. “So I decided to do a property management course and look after them myself.” That was in 1999 and Elaine hasn’t looked back since. In fact, after only eight months in the industry she was awarded the REINT Property Manager of the Year Award. In 2006 she decided to open her own doors, forming Elaine Mills Property Management from home. Today the business is family owned and operated by Elaine, husband Robert and Daughter Terri, plus they have employed four staff to assist them. “Operating a home-based business has been very successful,” says Elaine. “In this industry you are on call 24/7, and if you need to work late at night you can do it at home.” Elaine balances her work and home life by spending time with family, and going fishing. She also has a home aviary, where she breeds birds - cockatiels, finches, and parrots. “It’s lovely to be able to take a break from work and sit in the aviary with a cup of tea,” she says. Elaine currently has 275 properties on her books, servicing between Darwin and the rural area. She prides herself on quick, reliable customer service to both tenants and landlords. Robert is also a qualified electrical contractor, so property maintenance can be carried out quickly and effectively. “Robert will often know what the issue is, and he can either fix it or get the correct contractor to do the job,” she says. “This saves the client time and money, and is
a real point of difference for us.” Elaine also strives to keep up-to-date with the latest in technology. She is a Premium member of Leading Property Managers of Australia (LPMA). One of Elaine’s newest system’s put in place offers owners instantaneous reporting services for showings and inspections. “This allows us to utilise iPads remotely, by sending showing reports, inspection reports and images to owners immediately, instead of waiting to get back to the office and write it up,” she explains. Networking and training is also an important aspect to Elaine’s business. “We undertake a lot of networking and training through both the REINT and LPMA,” she says. “It allows us to constantly strive to improve our services by keeping up to date with innovative ways of doing things. “By being a Premium Member of LPMA, it has allowed us to tap into resources from world known guest speakers plus other property management agencies throughout Australia.”

Residential Sales – Ray White Palmerston
When it came to returning to work after having her three children, Stacey Scrutton knew exactly what she wanted to do: real estate.
Direct Ph: (08) 8930 5620 M: 0418 302 215
With a military and public servant background, Stacey was looking for a challenging, yet rewarding role that would give her the flexibility to have a career at the same time as raising her young family. And as a home owner and property investor, she had always had a love of real estate. “I was fortunate enough to be able to take time off work when I started having children,” Stacey says. “When it came to the point where I was ready to go back to work, I knew I wanted to do something I would really enjoy. “My idea of a good time was always cruising around www.realestate.com. au, so residential sales was a natural thing for me. “The more I looked into it, the more I knew it was what I wanted to do. Stacey began her real estate career three years ago with Ray White and hasn’t looked back. “I absolutely love it,” she says. “It is a hard job to crack into initially, but I love the challenges, and the flexibility allows me to mould the job to suit.” Stacey believes real estate has allowed her to achieve a good family-work balance that wouldn’t be possible in a 9-to-5 job, allowing her to spend
more time with children Alarni, 10, Bobby, 9, and Liam, 5. “I can do things like drop the kids off to school, and pick them up,” she says. “During core business hours I’ll do all the things that need to be done, such as face-to-face meetings and phone calls. “But admin tasks such as marketing and research can be done from home. “For me it works really well, and I can balance it all. I couldn’t do it with any other job.” Other highlights of the job include being involved with happy events in people’s lives. “For a lot of clients, selling or buying a house may be a once in a lifetime transaction,” Stacey says. “Clients normally appreciate that I can emphasise that buying or selling is a major decision in their life and the stresses that go with it. “I try very hard to remember that it is more than a numbers game, it is people’s lives and normally a very emotional decision.” “It’s a really nice feeling to be involved in these major events that people will remember for the rest of their lives. “And not only is buying and selling exciting, but you are responsible for your own success. If you don’t put in, you don’t get the rewards.” November 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

Kristine, who is LJ Hooker’s Short Term, Holiday and Executive Letting Manager, began in real estate four years ago. Her passion for the industry grew after building her first house with her partner in 2007. Starting out as a receptionist, she moved into property management, before finding her niche in her current role. “Great communication with clients, plus a dedication to the role, is really important,” she says. “The main challenges are finding the right contractors to service the apartments. It is important they are cleaned to a high standard and a guest can just walk in and feel comfortable straight away.” JanellE Bronca believes quality customer service is an important part of the job. “Darwin is not known for its customer service, so it is a challenge to show clients that we are different and we genuinely want to help,” she says. Maria, who has 15 years’ experience in real estate, began with LJ Hooker two years ago. “Once I started working in real estate I found I really enjoyed it,” she says. All three women lead very busy lives outside of work, and say work-life balance can sometimes be a challenge. Janelle and her property management team have formed their own exercise club, working out socially together twice a week. “Finding that work-life balance is an important part to being successful at your job, especially when at times it seems like our job never stops,” she says.
Maria, who winds down by playing netball socially, agrees. “You need to be flexible in when you can meet with clients, and sometimes it is outside of business hours, so making sure you take that time out is important.” The long hours can be a challenge, adds Kristine, who is on-call 24/7. “But receiving that positive feedback from a client is incredibly rewarding.”

Gabriella Sawyer is a born and bred Territorian with a passion for real estate. Her local Territory knowledge combined with a background in sales and finance help put her at the top of the real estate game. “I love Darwin, I will never leave,” Gabriella says. “I believe in the future of the Territory and its growth. “Great things are happening here, especially in the property market, and it’s exciting to be a part of it.” Gabriella is originally from Katherine, where her family operated a successful earthworks and construction business, building roads and bridges. The Eugene Betti Bridge, which crosses over the Katherine River is named after her father. And husband Brendan’s family has owned and operated Trans Territory Foods for more than 40 years. “I guess you could say I know a lot of people throughout the Top End,” Gabriella says. “I understand the Territory way of doing things.” After time spent in the sales and finance industry, Gabriella made the move into real estate, working as a residential sales agent for Real Estate Central in Darwin. “I’ve found my niche and I love what I do,” she says. She spent eight years working across all sectors of the Spanish industry, including sales, rentals, investments and marketing. And she hasn’t looked back. “At first, taking on the challenge of the commercial department alone was certainly stepping into the unknown,” Melissa says. “But I haven’t looked back at all.” Melissa’s job involves the leasing and management of commercial properties from Darwin to Katherine, including offices, shops, and industrial premises. And with her portfolio covering such a large area, having excellent time-management and organisation skills come in handy. “There is definitely a lot of time management involved,” Melissa says. “The key is to priortise. as overseeing the day-to-day business operations. “It’s pretty hands-on,” she says. “Real Estate is a 24/7 job, you are on call and always available to the team and clients. Jody puts the success of Call2View down to their focus on the customer’s experience. “Client satisfaction is that one thing I am really big on,” she says. “It’s all about our clients. You might have a really good brand, but if you don’t have great customer service than you really have nothing. “Our philosophy is simple. We listen to what the clients want, consider their current position, and implement a strategy that will deliver the best result.” And as a busy mum with two small children, Jody works hard on maintaining a successful work-life balance. “It can be challenging sometimes, but I make sure I get my work and home balance right, even if It means getting up at 5am,” she says.
“I make sure I have really planned out my week, so that when I’m with the kids I’m mum, and when I’m at work I’m 100 percent focused on what needs to be done.” And with a great team behind her at Call2View, success is sure to keep on coming for Jody. “I’m really proud of what we have done and I’m really proud of my team,” she says. “The team has put in such effort over the last couple of years. Jarrett Lawrie Conveyancing
When looking for a reliable conveyancing service, it’s hard to go past Jarrett Lawrie Conveyancing. Business partners Dianne Jarrett and Sue Lawrie have sixty years combined conveyancing experience in Darwin. They met in the 1980s when they were both starting out as conveyancing clerks in law firms. In March 2002 they joined forces and started Jarrett Lawrie Conveyancing – and they haven’t looked back since. “We had known each other for years and worked together very well,” Dianne says. “We decided forming a partnership would be better than running individual practices.” Sharing a practice has given the pair a great work-life balance, and they work together across all client files. “We make a point to know about each and every client,” Dianne says. “This means that a client can always reach one of us, and we will know all the ins and outs of their file. “It’s like getting two conveyancers for the price of one.” Outside of work, the pair enjoy attending social functions, and they are both involved with the Women in Thoroughbred Racing Group. “We definitely have a great friendship as well as a great
working relationship,” says Dianne. Sue and Dianne are also members of the Australian Institute of Conveyancers, and are both Commissioner for Oaths. Dianne says their business focuses a lot on residential conveyancing, as well as some commercial work. And she is extremely proud that the majority of their clients are repeat customers or word-ofmouth referrals. “We mostly do what we like to call ‘cottage conveyancing’ – that is essentially family and residential homes,” Dianne says. “A lot of our clients recommend us to their family and friends, and we are really proud of the fact that we get a lot of repeat business and referrals this way. “Some of our clients are those we worked with when we first started out in the 80s, and we are now seeing the children and grandchildren of those clients come to us. “It tells us we are doing something right.” And Dianne believes customer service is the most important aspect of their business. “We don’t treat clients like a number, it’s important to us to have that good relationship,” she says.

Thinking of Volunteering? Thinking of Volunteering? Thinking of Volunteering?
Pathways and Payoffs of Volunteering The reasons why people volunteer have long fascinated academic researchers and other observers. Given that volunteering activity has no financial reimbursement and sometimes actually imposes a financial cost to the volunteer, often the question is posed “Why are people involved?”. Yet volunteering is everywhere around the world, and this encourages some research into the underlying motivations to volunteer and some of the impact and outcomes from volunteer participation. It is already common knowledge that most people volunteer for a mix of motives. Three classes of motivations often dominate and are often found to coexist; altruistic, utilitarian and social motivation. • Altruistic motives sometimes include religious beliefs, supporting an important cause, helping others, and so on. • Utilitarian motives include enhancing human capital, for example, gaining work experience and job training, developing new skills, exploring career paths, enhancing résumés, or making contacts useful for paid employment. • A third category of motivations also exist—social motives— which include extending one’s social networks, volunteering because friends or colleagues do so, responding to social pressures
to volunteer from peers. Studies have found that young people who volunteer are more likely than non-volunteers to have leadership ability, social selfconfidence, and skills in critical thinking and conflict resolution. Regardless of the individual’s formal studies or qualifications in these fields, the engagement in a volunteer activity often demonstrates experience and competencies to a potential employer. Hence an employer faced with many suitable applicants may use volunteer experiences as an additional measure when choosing the most suitable applicant. The volunteer experience thus enables job applicants to use their volunteering experiences as a positive signal to a potential employer therefore enhancing the individual’s career prospects.

New Blak Territory is a groundbreaking initiative showcasing new Indigenous performance works in the Top End, created and developed by Darwin director, producer and performer, Ben Graetz. This inaugural season of New Blak Territory, showcasing two new Indigenous theatre works, I AM MAN and The Adventures of Namakili, is proudly presented in partnership with Brown’s Mart Productions. I AM MAN is the second installment in a trilogy of physical theatre works by Ben Graetz. Ben’s first installment of his movement work GIFT was created at NIDA. The work was highly praised and had a return season the following year. His latest work is a transcendent and moving story told through the medium of movement and physical theatre. It is a powerful and captivating show about love, loss and transformation, exploring themes of identity, masculinity, sexuality, loneliness, death and love. The all-Indigenous male cast stars Sydney NIDA graduate and physical theatre performer Guy Simon and local Darwin performer Darren Edwards and brings together the talents of creative’s from all over Australia.
Through character, music and dance, Lynette Hubbard’s inspiring story, The Adventures of Namakili, explores the intricacies of life between two cultures. Writer and performer, Lynette Hubbard was born in Tennant Creek in the 1970’s and lived in a place called the Pink Palace, which is now an Aboriginal woman’s arts centre. She loved to dance and thought she was a ‘deadly’ dancer. Lynette met another young Aboriginal dancer who went to a dance school in Sydney and she thought, “If he could do it so can I.” At 17, Lynette was accepted at the Aboriginal Dance Theatre in Redfern, NSW. She toured with the musical ‘Bran Nue Dae’ as a chorus dancer and was accepted into NIDA. After two year’s at NIDA, she fell ill and was diagnosed with Lupus and had to go back home to recover. Back home she found she had a lot to re-learn; her language; her law – the woman’s proper way; proper conduct with family, and responsibility. Lynette’s touching and authentic theatre production is written in English, Creole, Wambaya and Warrumungu, a unique language mix rarely seen on stage. There is pathos, joy and plenty of comedy, as she refuses to take herself and life, too seriously.

Fresh from wowing the crowd at the NRL Grand Final and a performance at the Governor’s Ball after the Emmy Awards, Jessica will be on stage at the Entertainment Centre for two big nights of her ‘To the End of the Earth Tour’. Catch her on 16 and 17 November. Two more legends of Australian music will make their way to Darwin this month. Grammy Award-nominee and guitar maestro Tommy Emmanuel will perform Live and Acoustic on 2 November. The ‘Guitar Wizard of Oz’ has built a huge legion of followers over more than five decades of performing around the world, and he’ll strip it all back in a night made for music fans. Later in the month, Men at Work’s front man Colin Hay will take you
with him on his journey of selfdiscovery, music and renewal. With his distinct voice instantly recognisable from classics such as ‘Who Can it Be Now?’ and ‘Down Under’, Colin Hay combines songs with story-telling for a night to make you laugh, cry and sing along. Darwin audiences love a great night of comedy – and the biggest names in the business are taking notice! Anh Do, Jason Byrne, The Wayans Brothers and Julia Morris are just some of the comedians who’ve already performed at the Entertainment Centre this year. This month, American comedian Arj Barker returns to the Centre with his new show, ‘Go Time’. You can expect a night of sharply funny comedy gold. The Entertainment Centre is partnering with Browns Mart Theatre to support the staging of the local production of the Broadway hit, The God of Carnage. The play runs until 9 November.

IN THE TOP END
Take advantage of the fact that Cicada Lodge (Katherine, Northern Territory), is the only luxury property in the Top End to open all year round, and come and discover the incredible sights, sounds and experiences of the wet season. From just $600 per room per night twin share, discover the Top End’s majestic wet season from the luxury of Cicada Lodge. Most people come to visit the Top End during the “dry” season. But the locals know that from October on, the best the region has to offer is just starting. As the Wet season builds, the Gods play out a nightly drum-roll of thunderstorms that bounce off clouds lying stacked upon the horizon. A deafening chorus of Cicadas competes, adding to the cacophony of percussion. This is to announce the imminent arrival of monsoonal rains. The onset of the Wet resurrects the Gorge’s waterfalls flushing out the waterholes, leaving crystal clear water in its path, and injecting a splash of vibrant lush green into the country side. Cicada Lodge, nestled in bushland on the edge of the Katherine River has the perfect escape for you to take in

NITMILUK Take advantage of the great wet season rates on offer at Nitmiluk Chalets and come and explore the ancient wonder that is Nitmiluk Gorge. Too often we forget the magic that is our playground – now is the time to remind yourself what makes the Top End so unique. Nitmiluk Gorge has been carved out of the sandstone cliffs that line the Katherine River creating 13 distinct gorges – each with its own stunning natural features and landmarks and each steeped in the culture and the local Indigenous people - the Jawoyn. Within the river system, Barramundi and turtles live, and the sandbanks reveal the tracks of freshwater crocodiles. Water buffalo and wild brumbies come down from the plains to the river to drink along with an abundance of birds many of which are unique to this area. Cruising the Gorge system under the soaring sandstone cliffs and past indigenous rock art dating back more than 30,000 years visitors to Katherine learn to appreciate the ancient power and majesty of this land.
Nitmiluk Gorge and the Katherine River are the heart of Katherine but by no means the only reason to visit. As one of the oldest and largest inland settlements in the Northern Territory, Katherine has a rich and lasting history. It was an integral part of the famous Overland Telegraph and is a major stop on the great rail line which now links north to south. Today Katherine has a thriving tourism industry primarily centered around Nitmiluk Gorge but also including the stunning Edith Falls; the old gold mining town ship of Pine Creek; the Adelaide River War Cemetery; Cutta Cutta Caves Mature Park; Springvale Homestead, the oldest station homestead in the Northern Territory and much more.

BUSINESS In 2010 Ellashaye D’more realised that the vintage art of burlesque needed to be brought to Darwin, one way or another! To compete in the national competition, Miss Burlesque Australia, she had to travel to Queensland as there was & still isn’t any state competition in the Northern Territory (she successfully won the state title that year.), so the seed was planted that this seductive form of entertainment from the golden era of Hollywood needed a home in Darwin & she was just the lady to do it. With stage experience in Darwin, Queensland, Sydney & Melbourne the chance to bring her beloved burlesque to the Darwin arts community finally arrived after the birth of her first son Maximus. Ellashaye began to teach the ‘Art of the Tease’ in Malak to a handful of students at the community centre & teaching budding performers in private classes, however earlier this year she teamed up with fellow vintage lover, Miss Beckiejo from Melbourne, and together they have created ‘Ellashaye’s Secret Women’s Business’ providing classes & intensive courses to both performers & non-performers
• Secret women’s business casual burlesque class $15 every Sunday no booking required • Smoulder & Burn casual class $20 every Monday no booking required • Beginner & intermediate Burlesque 10 Wk Performance Course registration now open for 2014 • Saturday 16th Vintage Hair & makeup workshop in pinup styling: book via website spaces limited • Burlesque Fan Course : feather fans & silk fans • Private classes • Group choreography • Hen’s night’s, birthday parties…. • Gift certificates

alike, “you don’t need to be on the stage to enjoy this form of movement & self-expression.” Says Ellashaye, “it’s about finding confidence in yourself & how you move”, this ideal seems to resonate with the ladies of Darwin as casual classes have grown & the first course of 11 performance students is due to graduate 16th November. November 16th also sees their first Vintage hair & make-up workshop in Darwin, where ladies can enjoy learning the techniques of pinup makeup application & hairstyles from the 1940’s to 60’s, the workshop is a lot of fun & gives ladies a sense of style & glamour for their everyday life! Together Ellashaye & Beckiejo will bring ‘the art of the tease’ & a splash of vintage glamour to Darwin with their Secret Women’s Business. Some areas of our lives may be “just like a box of chocolates” but Dr Kery O’Neill has made it a bit of a mission to educate the community about the need to do more than just pick from the open box when it comes to Healthcare.
Dr Kery O’Neill
P: 0449897446 or E: kery@activeaxonseducation.com.au
Dr O’Neill is an educational consultant with a medical background and a passion for everyday science and empowered health choices. “There is just so much we can do to deal with health issues that arise in our life. Modern medicine and complementary approaches together offer us so much in terms of prevention and management. A move towards a truly integrative approach is something that the world needs right now as emphasised by the W.H.O. The evidence is there for the success of this approach and it is so exciting to be a part of this move.” Finishing treatment for cancer herself at the end of 2011, Dr O’Neill surprised her medical team with her recovery rate and outcomes. “I did my research and used both medical and complementary approaches Unfortunately when I discussed this with my surgeon she simply said ‘You are from the Blue Mountains aren’t you? Not much oxygen up there.’ l was staggered!” Dr O’Neill decided to make it her business to empower people to make informed choices about health outcomes and strategies and work towards an evidence based integrated approach. Dr O’Neill is keen to work with people in the Northern Territory. “There is an amazing community up here with a wonderful range of
experience, and this is an amazing opportunity to make a difference! The great news is that anyone can do this. It can help families have more control over their health, and support the work of Heath Practitioners and Exercise Studios to provide that little bit extra.” Science, individual experience, generosity, education and empowerment are all important in her business. Dr O’Neill and others run workshops connecting the basic biology of health to Complementary Approaches to Cancer, Family Health Care, Managing Pain and Inflammation, Stress Management, Managing Infectious disease, Natural Health for “Animals Other than Human” and a range of other themes. Having an understanding of the power of diet, exercise, massage, meditation, aromatherapy and the therapeutic use of herbs and essential oils can help give us back control over our family’s health and support a more natural approach. I am very thankful for our county’s medical system but we can help it work better if we take a bit more responsibility.” She will be visiting Darwin to run free courses and conduct interviews in the coming months and would love to hear from those interested attending or learning more about any aspect of this work.

KERRY BOYD
Most shoppers walking into Battery World will expect to be greeted by a bloke. But more often or not it will be owner Kerry Boyd – and she knows more about batteries than most people. Kerry has been selling batteries for 18 years, since the Cairns Battery World store opened. Along with partner Rob, 16 months ago they bought the Battery World store right here in Darwin. “We had this whole world of knowledge and expertise and the opportunity came up to buy the Darwin store, so we took it,” she says. “It’s been great because demographically Darwin is very similar to Cairns, and the people here are so welcoming and friendly. “I love being here and I am passionate about being involved in the Darwin community.” And Kerry is adamant that Battery World is a store for all members of the family, not just the guys. “People perceive a battery shop as being a man’s domain, but it really isn’t. It’s a bit like a onestop shop for everything,” she says. “More often than not its women who run the household, and sixty percent of our products are for household use, such as batteries
for kids’ toys, phones, cameras, remote controls and everything else. “Everyone can come in here and not be intimidated if they don’t know exactly what sort of battery they need.” As well as batteries for household items, Battery World also stocks batteries for cars, boats, trucks, tools – you name it, they will sell it. They can also test, fit and install your batteries, and they offer a 24-hour breakdown service, 365 days a year. “Nearly everything in our lives revolves around batteries these days,” says Kerry. A passion for customer service means Kerry’s customers are always happy. “I don’t just see my job as selling batteries, I see it as solving people’s problems,” she says. “It’s hard to have an unhappy customer if you really focus on customer service.” The store is conveniently located with ample parking. If you are looking for personalised customer service, batteries and more, allow Kerry and the team to look after you.

Sale items, no returns
NO WAY!! Although there are some circumstances that entitles a retailer to refuse accept an item for return including where you cannot provide proof of purchase or if after getting that ‘just had to have’ Gucci handbag you decide it doesn’t go with anything in your wardrobe, but if the product is faulty the consumer has exactly the same rights as if the item were full price. What are the consumer rights? Under the Australian Consumer law1 retailers are required to accept returns for goods purchased from a business and provide consumers with a repair, replacement or refund if the goods: • are faulty, or become faulty within a reasonable period of time after purchase; • are not fit for any purpose stated i.e. they don’t do what the retailer said
There’s nothing I love more than picking up a bargain and whilst wandering through the shops last week a pair of shoes caught my eye. On seeing they were on sale for less than a third of their original price I just couldn’t resist. As the sales lady handed me my latest bargain buy she cheerfully told me “Of course at that price there are no returns”. they would do; • don’t match the description or sample; • are of unacceptable quality; or • fail to meet other mandatory consumer guarantees Rights to return faulty goods under the Australian Consumer Law extend for a reasonable period of time after purchase, and there is no set time limit within which a buyer can return faulty goods. It is usual for a retailer to require proof of purchase such as a receipt. Repair, replace or refund When the problem with the goods is major, the consumer can choose to reject the goods and: • choose a refund; or • choose a replacement; or • ask for compensation for any drop in

“Injecting energy into people and business”
50
November 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine
Children hold a wealth of skills and perspective that could unlock the secrets to success, the skills that as adults we commit our time, money and energy to learning, developing and seeking. The irony is we have always had the skills, they have just been lost with experience. It is through working with business owners and corporate teams that I realised they are looking for what they already possess but have just forgotten about with time, story, experience and institutionalisation (workplace institutionalisation that is).
Workplaces are looking for staff to be skilled in among others; • Engagement • Accountability • Initiative • Innovation • Passion • Interdependence • Focus
In a world that is moving faster than we can keep up with there is one group who continue to hold the answers, if we took the time to look.
If you have ever been with children you will notice; • They can make friends with anyone and be immediate best friends (engagement). • They will tell you what they have done in detail (accountability). • They love to help and put their hand up (initiative). • They can make a castle or pirate ship out of cardboard boxes (innovation). • Watch boys talking about lego and you will never find more passion (passion). • They look to others for help but want to do it themselves (interdependence). • They can’t leave a tower until it is finished (focus). There is much we can learn from children about life, business and success, we just need to take the time to look and learn.

Taking tho s e
First Steps With two baby free days per week on the horizon– my sister-in-law is pondering ‘what to do now?’ Like most things in life, there are many options, and we discussed them in great length as the little one practised his walking in the park, smiling proudly to himself, entirely unaware of the gravity of it all. Re-entering the workforce after having a child or even after just having some time off can be a daunting prospect. Time off can also prompt the idea for a change in career – but where to start? The workforce changes as quickly as your circumstances and suddenly that gap on your resume is the first thing employers ask you about in an interview. University can be an option, but degrees take a long time and often require full time attendance on campus. The option of vocational education is commonly synonymous with either learning a trade or taking a night off every few weeks to practice basket weaving or flower arranging at your local community college. While vocational education can be helpful for anything from construction to basket weaving, it offers so much more, especially for those who find themselves needing to up skill in order to re-enter the workforce or those simply wishing to expand their options when looking for work. A good place to start can be to find a few of your ideal jobs and start looking at the skills that are listed in the advertisements. Don’t just limit yourself to the ‘must haves’ but include the ones listed under the heading ‘desirable candidates will….’ Then compare them to the skills you have listed in your resume. This type of gap analysis can be invaluable when working out what to do next when it comes to study. One of the best things about vocational qualifications is that they are not just theoretical, you won’t just be sitting in a classroom reading a textbook, you’ll be
My nephew took his first steps on the weekend. This major life event has been well documented on social media sites by various family members, and comes attached to a place, two days a week, at a highly sought after day care centre. The centre is currently only accepting children who have graduated from crawling, so the walking is an especially big deal.
learning skills. That list of skills you write down, may well just match to a qualification that you didn’t even know existed. Furthermore, a qualification like the Diploma of Management or Cert. IV in Training and Assessment can be completed in 8-10 face to face sessions, with flexible online, blended and delivery options allowing for a manageable balance between study and life commitments. These qualifications are nationally recognised and in the example of the Training and Assessment qualification can lead into the type of flexible career that is perfectly suited to someone like my sister-in-law looking to re-enter the workforce on her own terms, 2 days a week while she also spends time with her son. The list of vocational education courses is as diverse as the people who study them – community services, bookkeeping, education support and even construction. With this in mind, should you find yourself considering a career change in the next few months or even with some free time on your hands wanting to upgrade your resume, take a look at the skills you need, speak to someone about the different options on offer and find the qualification that matches the skills you need.

DarwinLife | Gold Plate Awards
It’s awards season again and the highly anticipated 2013 AHA (NT) harbottle on-premise Gold Plate Awards were held on October 14th, with some of Darwin’s finest venues receiving the well deserved accolades. This is Glen Helen’s Restaurants second consecutive year of winning the Gold Plates Awards.

Presented at a gala dinner at the DoubleTree by Hilton Esplanade Darwin, there were many highlights during the night, but none as significant as the naming of the ‘Restaurant of the Year’. Few will be surprised to learn the award went to one of Darwin’s finest and best loved restaurants - Pee Wees at the Point. Acting CEO of the AHA (NT), Ms. Sarah Andrews commented on their achievement. “I would especially like to congratulate the 2013 ‘Restaurant of the Year’, Pee Wees at the Point who also won the Gold Plate for ‘Best Stand Alone Restaurant’. Pee Wees provide a fine dining service, complemented with one of the most spectacular views in Australia.” Newcomer on the scene, Pavonia Place took out the highly contested award for ‘Best New Establishment’, over fellow nominees The Precinct, Antiquity Greek Restaurant, The Cove, 21 on the Wharf and Hot Tamale. The Territory has the unique advantage of having stunning natural beauty as well as glorious weather mostly year round. With access to great and diverse produce, and a strong focus on global food to cater to a multicultural customer base, competition in awards such as these can be tight, with many outstanding venues involved. “There is no doubt that the Territory boasts dining establishments that rival our southern counter- parts and I encourage all Territorians and visitors to the NT to go out and enjoy the wonderful array of dining experiences available to them,” said Ms. Andrews. “It was great to see so many new restaurants open over the course of last year and add to the Territory’s already vibrant and diverse hospitality industry,” said Ms Andrews. A Gold Plate symbolises that a dining establishment has achieved excellence in customer service and food. Gold Plate judges scrutinize every aspect of their dining experience, with food weighed the most heavily. 300 people involved in hospitality industry attended the Awards night including many VIPs and dignitaries. DarwinLife congratulates all of those involved and invites you to tempt your taste buds with more on the winners in our feature. Bon appétit!

You can’t beat the
TASTE OF LOC A L
Driving along Tiger Brennan Drive or turning of onto Frances Bay Drive near Darwin CBD you may not have noticed one of the Territories oldest industries working hard to bring their products to you. No, it is not Perkins and their barges or the numerous gas and oil boats… it is the seafood industry! Week in week out the seafood industry are carefully unloading freshly caught seafood at the Darwin mooring basin. This is usually the only glance the public may get of our amazing seafood industry. The support and demand for local seafood has been fantastic over the last few years. We know that you don’t believe the rhetoric and emotive terms used by those who want our waters to lock out fishing. However we also realise that we need to get better information out to you about our great industry. The Support NT Caught campaign, driven by the Northern Territory Seafood Council, has captured some of the most iconic territory fisher stories, along with those of several Darwin seafood restaurants and retailers. http://www.supportntcaught.com.au/ for local stories and facts, find out about the people that bring you your seafood and the truth about this great NT industry. Local professional fishers deliver the finest seafood that can be easily enjoyed at home. How about a whole roasted fish? Nothing could be easier. It is easy to prepare, adaptable to any tastes and definitely easy enough for us ‘non-chefs’. Drizzle on some oil, season with some herbs and spices, and if you are more “masterchef ” than “BBQ chef ” try stuffing the fish with lemon pieces, onion, tomato, minced garlic and some butter, cover with foil and place on a preheat BBQ or in the oven until. Generally whole fish takes approximately 20 minutes at 180 degrees per kilo. Like everything, seafood tastes that much better when it’s harvested close to home. With fresh seafood unloaded right here in Darwin every week why choose anything less - ask if it’s local, and ‘like’ us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ supportntcaught.

PRICKLES TEX MEX AND
Contemporary Cuisine GOOD ATMOSPHERE • BETTER MEXICAN FLAVOURS • BEST BBQ PORK RIBS! Prickles is a well-established Mexican restaurant in Parap; Jim and Diane, owner/managers presenting a menu to tantalize lovers of Mexican cuisine. Iced Sangria was our choice of cocktails for the evening. ($6.00 glass $23.50 jug) A red wine based cocktail with slices of orange and lemon; together with a fantastic subtle after tone of cinnamon and gloves. A great choice for Mexican food; although you might like to try Prickles selection of Mexican beers. ($7.50 - $9.50) The entrees are just right to start a great dining experience; especially if there is a group sharing: ‘Triple Dips’ ($16.50), Guacamole ($12.50) or any of 8 delicious entrees. ($9.50 $16.50) All fresh, packed with flavour and great presentation. For mains the ‘Prickles BBQ ribs are a winn er. Generous serving of succulent, lean, American cut pork ribs in a tangy chipotle sauce served with mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. ($29.50) Cooked to perfection; the meat falling off the bone. The traditional Mexican fare of
Quesadilla ($25.50), Nachos ($24.50) and Fajita ($27.50) – sizzling strips of spicy marinated rump with flour tortillas, grated cheese, refried beans, salad and sour cream are also specialities of Prickles . Mexican food at its best! Prickles offers ‘Veracruz’ ($29.50), lightly pan fried fillets of local fish, topped with fresh salsa, accompanied with a saffron rice or ash: clean, aromatic flavours; however not overpowering the delicate, moist fillets of fish. A great light option for lovers of seafood. ‘Banana Butterscotch Enchilada’ ($9.50) was our choice of dessert. Sliced banana wrapped in a tortilla and served with a rich, classic butterscotch sauce and Chantilly cream. A wonderful dessert to share and finish our meal. Prickles may be a long standing Darwin venue, where you may have dined some years ago: however do yourself a favour; have an exciting eating experience of authentic ‘Mexican tucker’. You won’t be disappointed!

Fannie Bay “Hearing the sizzle of the perfect cut of meat on the backyard barbecue is just as important as plating up a flawless Masterchef dish.” For more information call: (08) 8981 2647 or drop and see Terry, Bron and their team at Shop 3A Fannie Bay Place, Fannie Bay.
GOURMET MEATS By: Jessica Kent
A chef might require skills to create a Michelin star rated meal but the real magic is in the ingredients. The Darwin Foodies blogged about the importance of quality ingredients and one of their writers went in search of the perfect hunk of meat to learn the secrets of cooking a good steak. ‘I knew my quest came to an end immediately upon walking into Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats… I knew these boys had all the good stuff.’ Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats knows that there is no substitute for quality meat and their products have reflected this for more than 30 years. With over 400 gourmet meats to choose from, Fannie Bay Meats has the widest range of quality meats in Darwin. Whether it’s for a quick meal to rustle up after work or you want to impress guests with your Masterchef talents, you will find the best cuts to suit your fancy. They have your basic barbecue sausages through to duck and blueberry sausages. They stock duck, venison, rabbit, and a wide selection of free-range meats. You can basically name the meat you’re after and they will have it or they will source it for you.

Owners, T e r r y and Bronwyn Wilkins, took over the well-established Fannie Bay Meats in 2009 with a dream to continue on the legacy set by the previous owners. They pride themselves on product excellence and exceptional service and are willing to go that extra mile to satisfy their customers. ‘It’s not often we can’t cater to someone’s request,’ said Terry. Like the free-range chicken, the organic Bultarra Australian Saltbush Lamb continues to grow in popularity here in Darwin. Not stocked in many places, the lamb is sourced from Spear Creek in South Australia where the produce feed on unique saltbush pastures, giving it nature’s own flavouring. With Christmas just around the corner, Fannie Bay Meats has a menu available with a selection of meats to cater to the traditional Christmas table or to those seeking something a little different. You can call in during their opening hours to pick up the 2013 menu. To ensure you get what you want, all orders must be in by Monday 9th December. All over our glorious country you can see an uprising of the feeble man. He’s in our work place, in our homes and in our gyms. Is this you? Are you ordering Chai Mocha Frappe whatever coffees? Have you made the switch to soy? Does your gym shirt match your shoes? Do you spend more time in front of the mirror than your girlfriend does? Do you like to make whimsical remarks on social media? Men of Australia, what is going on? If you find yourself starting to sway to the limp side, read and follow the list below, including the workout template and start to reclaim your manhood. The Man List. 1. Start growing a beard. 2. Throw away anything in your wardrobe that is pink, light blue, orange...wait, just throw it all out and start over. 3. Ditch the soy and drink normal milk, then apologise to the milk for cheating on it. 4. Cancel all social media connections.
That’s right men, it’s time to Man Up! 5. Stop using words like “organic” unless you are referring to food. 6. Never use acronyms like “FYI” or “LOL”. 7. Start lifting weights like you damn well mean it. The Workout Template A) Heavy Compound -Squat or Deadlift is the correct answer. B) Push vs Pulls- 5-7 rounds of mixed pushes and pulls, anything you like goes. Reps should be between 10-15, so choose the weight accordingly. The exercise selection is less important than the intent behind each set. You should have only one or two reps left in the tank at the end of each set. Give it everything you have, but don’t go to fail, only sissys fail. C) Conditioning- Hill sprints, car pushing, battling ropes. It’s up to you to decided, because real men make their own decisions. Just be sure to be covered in sweat by the end. 8. Start cutting your own hair. 9. Do not iron anything ever. But if your job dictates that you must, at least do it yourself. 10. Help out around the house,

In more recent times we have seen the rise of modern fighting arts such as kickboxing in the 1980s and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in the 90s, with MMA still thriving and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Now we see reality based self-defense systems like Krav Maga spreading worldwide. These styles have a large focus on fighting and modern self-defense which is very appealing for a society wanting to learn the art as quick as possible, which can sometimes lead to the traditional values of

patience and discipline not being as present. Having been raised on traditional martial arts, I can appreciate the years of discipline, focus and meditation. I find in a lot of the more modern forms of fighting there is a need to be a great athlete but there can be some lack of that sense of discipline and respect that is focused on in traditional arts. When looking for a style of martial arts or self-defense you need to find a balance. If you are doing a traditional style you need to ask yourself how relevant is this move and its effect in a real-life scenario? If you were under pressure and not with a training partner in the dojo would it work? All arts have their benefits
and it’s up to the individual to really maximize their training and take from it what they need and most importantly have a balance between the old ways and the new. Amazing All-rounder
• RoC® RETINOL CORREXION® range
not only clearer skin but it was also preventing wrinkles and retinoids are the only topical product that gets rid of wrinkles you already have. This is because retinoids bind to corresponding receptors in the skin. This peels off the top layer, which evens skin tone, and thickens the layers below, which smoothes out wrinkles. Retinoids also boost collagen, a protein that keeps the skin firm and springy, by blocking the genes that cause it to break down and increasing other gene activity responsible for its production. Types of retinoids No cosmetic ingredient has been scientifically proven to be more effective for improving the signs of ageing than retinol. Retinol, however, is a polyunsaturated fat which oxidises in the same way butter or margarine goes rancid. Retinol must therefore be stabilised to maintain optimal potency, hence why you’ll often find them in aluminium packaging. The least effective retinoids include retinal, which is naturally occurring, and retinyl esters such as retinyl palmitate. Finally… It’s important to note that skin care products that contain Vitamin A can cause skin irritation in some people and retinoids degrade in light, which is why most dermatologists recommend night time application and the use of a good sunscreen during the day.
• Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serums
Vitamin A is essential for healthy eyes and skin and is well known for helping with acne, stretch marks, wounds, wrinkles, and eczema; preventing premature aging; contributing to proper skin cell growth and repair; and promoting healthy skin. A deficiency of Vitamin A can lead to acne, dry skin, dry coarse hair, dandruff, broken fingernails, dry eyes and weight loss. Insomnia and fatigue may also be indicative of deficiency of Vitamin A. There are two ways you can use Vitamin A to improve your skin condition: Diet Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that occurs in two forms- retinol and beta carotene (provitamin A). Retinol is a true form of Vitamin A which is absorbed when eating animal food sources such as liver, eggs, and milk. Another form of Vitamin A is beta carotene which can be found in vegetables such as carrots, dark green leafy vegetables, spinach, broccoli, and yellow fruits. Topical Skin Products Topical Vitamin A derivatives, called retinoids, helps prevent clogged pores, the main cause of acne, by helping the pores remove dead skin cells. Retinoids also help with wrinkles reduction and skin aging prevention. Several decades ago dermatologists pinpointed retinoids that became effective treatments for various skin ailments such as acne. After a while they noticed the people using these retinoids had
PRODUCTS TO TRY:
Vitamins are an important part of maintaining a healthy body and your skin can benefit greatly from having a diet that includes vitamin rich foods, taking vitamin supplements and using skin care products that contain vitamin derivatives. Over the next couple of months I’ll be taking a look at the different vitamins and how they can be incorporated into your skin care regime.

Territory Laser Clinic At the annual Small Business Development Conference held at the Brighton Le Sands Novotel on the 14th October in conjunction with the Business Enterprise Centre Association, the National NEIS Association (NNA) had two major awards for New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) businesses. The “NEIS Change Award”, where NEIS has changed someone’s life and the “Best New Business” for businesses that have commenced within the previous 2 years of the nominations closing date in September 2013. The Best New Business is the most coveted of the two awards and this year there were 22 nominations. Holly Copping, Director of Territory Laser Clinic was the winner of the National NEIS Association award for Best New Business in 2013. Every year over 6,000 people undertake training in small business management through NEIS. The training is provided nationally by a network of NEIS Providers in every State and Territory. NEIS Businesses have a very high success rate, the percentage of people still operating their business fifteen months post commencement is 87.1% nationally. Mission Australia nominated Territory Laser Clinic because they recognised the enormous benefit that the clinic would have in assisting Territorians and Holly Copping was the right person to nurture and grow the business. Territory Laser Clinic is the first Northern Territory NEIS Business to have won this National award. “The response has been overwhelming” Holly says. “The business has grown immensely in such a short period of time and I am extremely lucky to have the support of Territorians. “I’d like to say a huge thank you to all my wonderful, loyal clients because I couldn’t do it without your support and custom”. Holly saw a gap in the market place in Darwin and decided to return home to establish Territory Laser Clinic in December 2012. Holly is currently the only fully qualified Dermal Therapist in the Territory who specialises in skin and laser treatments. Territory Laser Clinic also offers the services of an experienced Cosmetic Physician and an Advanced Cosmetic and Paramedical Tattoo Artist. The Cocktail Party • It pains me to say it, but avoid the champers. All those bubbles increase the rate of alcohol delivery into your system, making you get drunk faster. • Stick with clear liquids like vodka or gin as the have less chemicals for your liver to deal with. Pair them with water, lime, lemon or low sugar juice like berry juice. • Avoid the stodgy party pies, pastries and breads, they will bloat you. Instead go for lighter options like rice paper rolls, veggie sticks and meat on stick kind of snacks. The Office Lunch • White bread is no one’s friend. Steer clear of the sandwich platter and instead go for salad. At a pinch, you can take one slice of bread off the top and have an “open sandwich”, reducing the amount of stodge.

• For something sweet, try fruit and herbal tea instead of cakes or danishes. They never taste as good as they look anyways. The Family Dinner • Festive season means seafood, roasts and BBQ’s. Avoid sausages (the lollies of the meat world) and instead tuck into more natural whole meats like steaks, prawns, fish and chicken. • Pair your meats with salads and green veggies. Keep the roast spuds to a minimum, 1-2 should curb your craving. • Stick with one type of alcohol. Mixing red wine, white wine, spirits and god knows what else is just inviting trouble. The festive season is a time to celebrate and let down your hair, which you can totally do without waking up feeling like death the morning after.

COSMETICS
vs
Cosmeceuticals Antioxidants: Whilst you can’t reverse the effects of freeradical damage and aging, you can certainly prevent or slow these destructive forces. Antioxidants can also reduce inflammation of the skin, counteract collagen destruction and encourage cell growth to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The best known and most commonly used antioxidant is Vitamin C, which should arguably be part of every skin care regime. Retinoids: When we talk about retinoids we mean Vitamin A. Vitamin A has been used medically most commonly to treat acne but is now very much part of the beauty and anti-aging armamentarium. It has been shown in studies to have positive effects on collagen, increase skin cell turnover and inhibit certain steps involved with pigmentation. Vitamin A should not be used in pregnancy and is generally used under medical supervision.
Essentially the term cosmeceutical refers to the combination of cosmetic products and pharmaceuticals. Cosmeceuticals differ from standard beauty products as they contain active ingredients with medical or dermatological benefits. Whilst some beauty products may claim to have cosmeceutical properties or ingredients the majority of them don’t contain high enough concentrations to penetrate the skin deeply enough. Cosmeceuticals on the other hand reach a deeper level of the skin without the need for a medical prescription. However, with every product promising younger looking skin and anti-aging benefits, it can be difficult to distinguish the real products from the gimmicks so make sure you look out for some of these key ingredients to ensure you are getting the most out of your skincare: Exfoliants: The role of exfoliants is to encourage the surface skin cells to shed and thus help produce a smoother brighter skin. This is because a thick layer of surface cells can build up which makes the skin look dull and can also impede the absorption of your skin care products. A variety of acids are used in differing strengths as chemical exfoliants e.g. Alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) as well as physical exfoliants such as scrubs. Skin lightening ingredients These generally inhibit melanin formation at a cellular level (Kojic acid) or bleach already established pigment (hydroquinone) reducing the appearance of brown discolouration often caused by hyper-pigmentation and sun damage. Peptides: Peptides are a group of substances some of which are commonly found in creams these days. These creams tend to be expensive
but can help with anti-aging by promoting collagen synthesis. Remember that this list is not exhaustive and there are many other ingredients to look out for when it comes to cosmeceuticals. Your skin is invaluable so ensure you invest in some quality skincare to protect yourself against the effects of photo-ageing. This month’s contribution has been provided in conjunction with Kristina Kyriacou who is a Health and Beauty columnist with her own popular blog. kkristinak.blogspot.com.au

“I started my company because plastic surgery options in Australia can be very expensive,” explains Siobhan. “Often the cost of the procedures overseas, plus flights and accommodation, is cheaper than what your outof-pocket costs in Australia would be.” Heavenly Beauty Abroad facilitates plastic, cosmetic and dental surgery trips to Thailand, and has partnerships in place with internationally accredited hospitals and clinics in both Bangkok and Phuket. It has access to some of the most reputable surgeons in the world, many who have up to
30 years’ experience. Procedures offered are numerous, with the most popular including dental work, breast augmentation, tummy tucks and liposuction. And what makes Heavenly Beauty Abroad stand out is the peace of mind it offers its clients. “We take all the worry out of planning your experience,” says Siobhan. “Undertaking cosmetic surgery is a big step, but we provide you with all the information you need and liaise directly with the surgeons on your behalf.” Upon receiving an initial enquiry, the team at Heavenly

Beauty Abroad will gather personal information about the client, such as their medical history, and what procedures they are wanting to undertake. A no obligation estimated quote will be prepared, and once it is determined that the client is a good candidate for surgery, further information – including photographs – will be gathered. This is then sent through to the surgeons and hospitals, who will evaluate the case and send through their recommendations and accurate quotes. If happy with the recommendations, Heavenly Beauty Abroad can then assist clients in
booking their surgery. “We really work with our clients to find them the surgeon that best fits their needs,” says Siobhan. Heavenly Beauty Abroad can also arrange discounted accommodation packages ranging from budget through to five-star through their hotel partnership network, and can provide recommendations on flights. Payment plans are also available through their finance partner Mac Credit. “We ensure all the bases are covered for a peace of mind medical tourism experience that is personalised to suit each client’s needs,” says Siobhan.

& Thickness As a follow-up to my September column, this month I will be discussing a further benefit of Chiropractic care, that is, when patients report increased mobility and less stiffness after treatment.
Marc Cova | B.Sc. M.Chiro CAANT President 5/5 Keith Lane Fannie Bay 08 89414033 About the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (National) Limited (CAA) IS THE PEAK BODY REPRESENTING Chiropractors. An underlying principle of Chiropractic is “healthy spine, healthier life”. By offering expert, drug-free spinal health care and lifestyle advice, Chiropractors help Australians lead and maintain healthy lives. With over 2,900 members, the CAA is the largest Chiropractic health body in Australia, and coordinates its efforts with its 8 autonomous CAA state and territory organizations.
Recently I discovered a study performed at the University of Utah by a Professor of Physiotherapy who measured certain changes in the spine after it was manipulated. The authors of this case recruited fifty-one participants with complaints of low back pain. The authors then measured the patient’s spinal stiffness by lying them on their stomachs and utilised a mechanical instrument to apply a downward pressure on the patients spine. After three indents, an average stiffness level was calculated based on how much the patients spine moved with the downward pressure. Following this, small but very important spinal muscles called Multifidi were measured for their thickness under ultrasound. Following both of these measurements, a Physiotherapist or a Chiropractor performed a low back manipulation and following the manipulation, spinal stiffness and Multifidus thickness were measured. The results of this study showed a significant immediate decrease in the stiffness of the patients low back and an immediate increase in Multifidus thickness following spinal manipulation. This study is important for several reasons, as practitioners who work with the spine we all see people every day who report feeling stronger and less stiff after a Chiropractic adjustment This study provided some preliminary evidence to support the notion that manipulation helps improve stiffness as well as increasing the activity of a group of vitally important low back muscles. It also very important due to the fact that often it is hard to explain to people how what you are doing as a Chiropractor actually works. All of us see hundreds of patients every week who report feelings of wellbeing after care, hopefully more evidence like this will assist in improving our understanding of how our amazing body works. E SSENCE of B EAUTY
25 Y E A R S On 12 October 1988 Nathalie Hernandez opened the doors of the Ella Bache salon Essence of Beauty – Palmerston’s first dedicated beauty salon. Twenty-five successful years later, Essence of Beauty is still going strong, and is in fact the oldest business in the Palmerston area. Nathalie found her passion for beauty following bouts of acne as a teenager. After using countless brands of other products, she happened upon Ella Bache- and has sworn by it ever since. “I stake my salon’s reputation on Ella Bache,” Nathalie says. “I had tried every product under the sun, and it was the only one that actually worked. “That’s why I am so passionate about Ella Bache products, and why I use them in my own salon.” Over the past 25 years, Essence of Beauty has steadily grown. Starting out with just one parttime assistant, Nathalie now employs four fully qualified beauty therapists, and offers the highest quality of treatments and services in skin care and rejuvenation, including facials, body wraps and treatments, waxing, massages, make-up, hand and foot treatments, and tanning. The salon itself has weathered two face lifts, and walking inside leaves you feeling instantly relaxed, as if you have stepped into your own private retreat away from the world. It also has an extremely loyal client base, with the same regulars for years. “We do go above and beyond with customer service,” says Nathalie. “We listen to our clients, to really find out what
their needs are. We work with them to resolve their skin complaints.” Nathalie believes one of the most successful changes the business has seen was her move to front-of-house manager, rather than beauty therapist. “Five years ago I stepped out of doing treatments and I started managing the business overall,” she says. “I found that I got to know all our clients really well, not just the ones I personally treated.” Nathalie believes being able to constantly change and adapt has led to her silver anniversary in business. “You need to be able to continually grow and educate yourself,” she says. “It hasn’t always been easy – there were some moments where I did contemplate selling. But I’m glad I persisted and I am really proud of what I have created.” Nathalie has also undergone significant changes in her own life. As a single mum she raised her son Aiden, now 17, and in Year 11 at Darwin High School. And in October 2010 she became a flight attendant for Air North. “I wanted to be a flight attendant as a teenager but was rejected by Qantas for being too short,” she says. “I love aviation in every way so I just decided to push my boundaries and do it. “It got me out of my comfort zone, and gave me a spark of reinvention.” November 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

men’s shed NOW OPEN
IN PA LMER STON What is a Men’s Shed?...
Men’s Sheds are a community workshop area for men to gather, develop skills, and undertake different activities. Essentially Men’s Sheds are about increasing the wellbeing of men by fostering social connectedness and increasing selfesteem. A number of different projects and social enterprises can operate out of a Men’s Shed. Basically, a Men’s Shed can be anything that the local communities want it to be. Men’s sheds are now established as part of the health infrastructure that supports programs to improve men’s health and well being. The focus of Mensheds Australia is on building the sustainability of men’s sheds. We believe that the sustainable shed will have assured financial resources and that their own commercial activities will be an important element. Men’s sheds are a social enterprise that create value and that value should form the basis of assured revenue from those that benefit from shed activities.

DISCOVER THE HISTORY OF THE
TOP END’S ORIGINAL MINING TOWN
Established in the late 1800s, Pine Creek is located 220 kilometres south of Darwin and 90 kilometres north of Katherine. It is the Top End’s only original mining town remaining from the 1870s gold rush era and is a treasure trove of heritage bush buildings and mine sites. Gold was discovered in 1871 by workers on the Overland telegraph Line. Although small, the township offers a range of accommodation options, including caravan parks and cabins, as well as some fascinating man-made and natural attractions. Many of the original buildings in the area still stand. The National Trust Museum building is the oldest surviving prefabricated structure in the Territory. Originally the home of the Mining Warden in Burrundie, it was later moved to Pine Creek and over the years served as a doctors residence, clinic dispensary, military hospital, post office and exchange. Today it houses the National Trust Museum and town library. Browse through the building and its contents to gain an insight into the gold rush, local Chinese history, buffalo hunters and the Overland Telegraph Line. The Pine Creek Railway Precinct is home to the original terminus of an uncompleted transcontinental railway system. The railway’s contribution to the development of the mining boom in the late 19th Century was profound and enabled the transport of machinery and equipment with greater ease to the mine fields than had been previously possible. Pine Creek maintained its importance after the railway was extended to Katherine and during WWII when it became one of the four dispersal bases on the North Australian Railway. Miners Park has strong architectural and historical associations and remains a key feature in the township’s heritage and streetscape. Discover the area around the town and explore the beauty of Umbrawarra Gorge where a pleasant little creeks runs between steep red cliffs into a series of swimming pools with sandy beaches. The surrounding bushland abounds with wildlife, making the area a naturist’s delight, and the area is an ideal spot for bird watching, claiming the largest number of bird species in the Northern Territory – including the elusive Hooded Parrot. Nearby, the Northern Goldfields Loop heritage trail takes you from Pine Creek to Adelaide River, through Grove Hill which has a heritage museum and where you can stop for a drink and a bite to eat. The route offers an insight into life during the gold rush era and passes abandoned mines that follow the Pine Creek Geosyncline, a giant intrusion of mineral rich ore seams, the erosions of which has resulted in the alluvial gold in this region. WELCOME TO
Emerald Springs Sliding off the Stuart Highway just north of Pine Creek in the Top End of the Northern Territory is Emerald Springs. It used to be just a roadhouse, serving lukewarm coffee and milk arrowroot bickies to passing truckies, before it was closed down and boarded up for nearly four years. But Dallas and Belinda saw its potential, and on the good advice of supportive and cluey locals, completely transformed Emerald Springs into six landscaped acres of tropical gardens with 20 rooms, licensed restaurant and bar, conference and function facilities and an enormous hardwood deck that begs to be relaxed on. And that’s only the beginning. Plans are now in motion to construct 20 cabins, each having their own private courtyard or balcony. Stop in for a meal in their multi award winning bistro, try the homemade ice-cream or just grab a coffee – with the only cappuccino machine between Darwin and Katherine it’s the best coffee around. Emerald Springs really isn’t what you expect. HISTORY OF THE
Prehistory The first caves in the history of humanity were, of course, caves. Looking back around 800,000 years, they were occupied by the now extinct species Homo Nohomobro. Manthropologists believe mates of this species assembled these small enclosures as places to “simply go hit rocks by myself for a bit”. Fossil evidence also shows that males used the spot to celebrate after successful hunts, while the tribe’s females gathered elsewhere in a shelter. Cranial restorations indicate that the eyes of the female were particularly adapted to rolling.

HISTORY OF THE
Ancient G R E E C E While most social dialogues in ancient Greece were held in the public square, many philosophers did their finest thinking in private chambers. These testicletoriums were often highly ornamented and gave citizens a quite sanctuary to ponder the nature of existence, masculinity and boobs. References to these dens have been found in some main Greek writings. In fact, in one interpretation of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”, man leaves his dimly lit shelter not to seek enlightenment but rather because he has run out of beer.

HISTORY OF THE
Colonial A M E R I C A As the young nation struggled on the strive for independence, so too did the architects of democracy, who utilised these spaces for everything from scripting legislation to spanking Puritans. Raucous parties were common: It is rumoured that John Hancock gained great joy out of putting his name “John Hancock” on the forehead of whoever passed out first (and we are not talking about his signature). It is not identified which Founding Father first installed such a room in his home. Our guess is Ben Franklin. That bloke invented pretty much everything, right?

The Future Taking into account all of modern man’s reliance on email, smartphones, social media, tablets and other digital services, it is difficult to envision how the man caves of tomorrow isolate us even more from important human interaction.
Maybe we will find an alien race whose man cave technology far overtakes our own. But until the glorious day comes when we finally turn outer space into personal space, we can only dream of what wonders wait.

THE
MAN CAVE
Recently I was asked and engaged to style an area adjacent to the garage under a home that was to be turned into a man cave.
I was horrified at the thought of mouldy carpet, bean bags and a homemade bar using 44 gallon drums it but the wife of this particular man was adamant that if he was to have this “man cave” that it was to be a well thought out area to be used by said man and his mates to retreat to, hence containing their mess and noise to the one are of the house. Made sense to me so I agreed. Ideally the area should be separate or private from the house - at least with a door to close and with a bathroom close by. The rest is up to the owners interpretation. The actual items for a man cave are quite basic I found as I researched the internet. Infact most men will already have piles of stuff lying around just waiting to be put to good use, this guys blog summed it up well I thought:
The idea of a man cave is to jam as much of your most awesome stuff into one room as possible so you can sit in it and feel pride over everything you have accumulated all at once, and to bring your buddies in so they can see how badass your collection is as well. Don’t worry about polishing it up unless you have the budget to do so. The great thing about not fixing it up is everyone will feel more comfortable drinking and generally having a good time without worrying about ruining anything.” Essential man cave checklist : • Somewhere comfortable to sit – a corner lounge, pair of recliners, or low ottoman to lie on will all work depending on how much room you have. • Wall mounted TV- saves on space and avoids getting damaged • Stereo or sound system • A fridge – for obvious reasons • A bar or bar style seating – Having seating at different heights makes a space more social • Wall mounted storage – shelves or hooks for that collection of stubby coolers, trophies, pig tusks, framed jerseys or any other personal item that is too ugly to allow in the main area of
Haley Roddy Lady Darwin Design www.ladydarwin.com.au 0421 680 221
your house Non essential man cave checklist : • Idea paint- this is a dry erase paint that turns virtually any surface into a whiteboard finish so an erasable canvas • Man toys- a pool table, pinball machine, dart board, video games, poker set- anything for for killing time between commercials and for a little friendly competition. • Sound proofing- Echo panel is a product made that comes in sheets that you can direct stick to walls, ceilings or the back of doors to muffle excess noise and keep your neighbours happy. • An external lock - to keep the men in there!

Rugby Shop The Heineken Super 7s and Coca-Cola Super 7s Rugby Tournaments continue through to Finals on November 16 at Rugby Park, Marrara.
Photos Provided by Leithal Pictures
For several weeks now Junior Rugby players representing Canterbury International, Channel 9, Laing O’Rourke and The Rugby Shop have been battling for supremacy in the Under 18 competition. Their Senior counterparts are participating in the Heineken Men’s Tournament and represent the Bundaberg Rum, Cazalys, Darwin Corporate Park, Hog’s Breath Café, Marsh, Mix 1049, Onesteel and Wildgeese teams. The question now begs, “Who will be the winners in 2013?” The Junior competition has seen Canterbury the dominant team in recent years whilst Hog’s Breath Café has been undefeated in some seven Finals in the Heineken competition. Another favourite for Finals night will be the “Heineken Hustle” – a dash for cash, where the fastest players from each team will contest a 100 metre sprint at 5:45 pm. This dash was last year won by Jared Nicholas of Defence Bank in 11.04 seconds and will take place immediately prior to the Heineken Super 7s Rugby Final.
The winner will pocket $200 in cash and the sprint will have oversight by the NT Athletics Association. Following the conclusion of the Super 7s Rugby tournaments The Rugby Shop will then focus on Christmas preparations. One of the big movers for this Christmas will be the crocs’ shoes which are ideal for Top End conditions as they are a comfortable lightweight shoe and easy to clean. Just perfect for our Tropical conditions! All crocs’ shoes feature croslite material – crocs’ proprietary closed cell resin, which represents a substantial innovation in footwear. The croslite material enables crocs to produce comfortable, lightweight, ergonomic, odour-resistant and recyclable shoes. These unique elements make crocs’ footwear ideal for casual wear, as well as for professional and recreational uses such as boating, hiking, hospitality and gardening. The versatile use of the material has enabled crocs to successfully market its products to a broad range of consumers. Games kick off at 2PM!

UNITED PAINTBALL THERE WAS APPREHENSION BUZZING IN THE AIR WHEN THE DARWIN LIFE TEAM ARRIVED AT THE UNITED PAINTBALL FIELD AT FREDS PASS RESERVE IN BEES CREEK. But this soon gave way to excitement and adrenalin at the thought of running around shooting friends, bosses and colleagues, even if it was just with “paint”. Upon arrival we were welcomed by the team of friendly staff, including owner Percy Masiello, who has operated United Paintball for three years. After a quick and entertaining safety briefing (thanks to Percy’s jokes) we were ready to suit up. Looking fabulous in our baggy camo overalls and masks, we take a few funny photos and get ready to enter the danger zone. The United Paintball team run through a few more safety rules with 104 November 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine
us (safety is always their first priority), show us how to load and reload the gun, and explain the rules of the game. We are split into two teams and over three hours will complete five obstacle courses. The main aim of one of the courses was to get the red flag situated in the middle of the playing field and move it to the enemy’s zone – all without getting shot. Once shot, you are out of the game! Within minutes it’s game on, and hundreds of paintballs are whizzing past your head. Your first thought is “aim and fire”, followed closely by “duck for cover”. In the end, you just shoot
Get Amongst It | DarwinLife
like crazy and hope you hit something. Shooting wildly, you hear someone scream “AGGGGHHHH” and you have a little giggle knowing someone is down. But then it’s straight back to business. Hiding behind a target, you reach into your ammo belt for more paintballs to reload your gun, constantly checking behind you in case the enemy is sneaking up for the kill shot. Towards the end you are battered and bruised (getting hit is half the fun), but can’t stop laughing and comparing war wounds (okay, bruises) with your team mates. I would recommend paintballing to anyone, it is a great day out, is a fantastic team building exercise, and would make a brilliant Christmas party idea. “I would do this again in a heartbeat,” says Darwin Life advertising executive Blair Martin. “It’s the most fun I’ve had in a long time. Everyone always says they want to paintball, but they never actually get around to it. Get off your butts and get involved, it’s so much fun!” “I found an inner GI Jane coming out in me,” says Rima Stafford. “As a woman with teenage children I didn’t think paintballing would be something I enjoy, but how totally wrong I was. What an adrenalin rush. And it didn’t hurt getting shot.” To Percy and the team at United Paintballing: thanks for making this experience our best Sunday Funday in a long time! We at Darwin Life recommend this to anyone.
United Paintball is open 7 days a week for bookings and is located at Freds Pass Reserve, Bees Creek Rd. Costs start at $50 per person which covers all equipment and 200 paintballs. You have to be 18 or older. For more information call 0407 644 575 or visit www.unitedpaintball.com.au

Success GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR
Adrian is one of many people employed through HR Links – a locally owned and operated labour hire company that has staff working in civil construction, mining and related industries throughout the Territory. In just 18 months, HR Links has helped more than 200 people find meaningful employment. HR Links is owned by brothers Robert and Shannon Rusca, who also own successful local company Rusca Bros Mining and bring a vast wealth of industry knowledge and local experience to the table. Through HR Links, Adrian commenced employment in a fly infly out role for Rusca Bros Mining, working on the Western Desert Resources project, building 170km of road from the mine site to the port which is located about 60 kilometers from Borroloola. And despite the two-week shifts and 12-hour days, Adrian couldn’t think of a better job. “You learn so much being out here, and there are a lot of different jobs you can do,” he says. “HR Links can really give you opportunities in all areas, such as construction or mining, if you’re willing to put the work in. “You get to work with a great bunch of people every day.”
Adrian McAdam is proof that hard work leads to success. The 42-year-old former AFL star works 12-hour days in one of the most remote parts of the Territory. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
HR Links has also gone the extra mile for Adrian, finding a position for his 16 year old son, Aidan. “Aidan wasn’t interested in school, and he was interested in getting a job,” explains Adrian. “So I went to HR Links and explained the situation and asked if they would be able to find him some work.” Before long, HR Links had secured a position for Aidan alongside his father. They also assisted Aidan in getting ready for work by helping him fill in paperwork, and secure the correct qualifications and licences during the course of his employment. “They really went out of their way to help, no other place would do that,” says Adrian. “And since being down there on the job site he has really thrived, and he has had opportunities to do different things, such as work with trucks or machines such as rollers.” “HR Links are so supportive and we have been really fortunate to have this support from a great team.” Visit www.hrlinks.com.au or call 1300 475 465 to find out more about employment and recruitment assistance from HR Links

DarwinLife | REINT Awards
On Saturday 21 September 2013 the real estate profession recognised their best and brightest at a glittering event held at the Darwin Convention Centre. Around 450 people attended the 2013 REINT Awards for Professional Excellence, which this year took on a distinctly Parisian feel with ‘A Night at the Moulin Rouge’. We had a record number of attendees this year and a record number of entrants in some of the categories, and the standard was phenomenal. It is so pleasing to see the real estate practitioners so proud of their professionalism and the service to their clients and this came through in their award nominations. While I had an opportunity to speak to a number of attendees, there were many I didn’t get the chance to speak to on the night, but by all accounts it was a spectacular evening enjoyed by one and all. But apart from giving the attendees a great chance to let their hair down, most of all it gave us an opportunity to showcase the amazing talent we have in the real estate
profession in the Northern Territory. In 2014 the REINT will celebrate its 40th anniversary and we’re already planning for next year when we will have a 1974 theme to celebrate our 40th birthday. And that means you have 12 months to get your best 70’s gear together. If you would like to find out more about being part of the REINT Awards for professional Excellence, or becoming a partner in this great event, contact the REINT on 8981 8905 or reception@reint.com.au. KIS Property has been awarded the REINT 2013 Innovation Award. Sales Manager Peter Kafkas says the award recognises his agency’s innovative approach to customer service. “To be innovative you have to change the industry for the better, implement something new, and do things to bring the industry forward,” he says. And Kis Property has certainly done that – by guaranteeing money back into their clients’ pockets if they don’t meet a certain level of customer service. “The number one biggest complaint is that agent’s take too long to respond to clients,” Peter explains. “So if we don’t respond to a seller within two hours, we deposit $100 directly into their account. That’s how committed we are to customer service.” KIS Property also gives its clients’ money back if they don’t sell their property within 90 days. “We refund their advertising money, plus an additional $1000,” he says. “So it is extra money in the client’s pocket.” Peter says his agency was proud to win the award, and will continue to strive to achieve success for their clients. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” he says.

winner is... Excellence in Body Corporate governance has been promoted, recognised and rewarded at the recent ‘invitation only’ Sterling Management Services “Chairperson of the Year” Awards. Often, being on the Committee of a Body Corporate is thought of as an onerous task; with the thought of taking on the role of Chairperson in many people’s minds, as extremely challenging. One of Darwin’s most experienced and esteemed Body Corporate Managers, Sterling Management Service’s Managing Director Phil Doyle is committed to changing these views. For the second consecutive year, Phil has initiated the “Chairperson of the Year” Awards to showcase the important work that Body Corporate Committees – and particularly the Chairperson – does on behalf of and for the benefit of all Unit owners – often, if not mostly, with little or no thanks. This year’s contenders for the “Chairperson of the Year” Award represent the interests of all owners for their respective building and are an impressive line-up of some of Darwin’s largest and most high-profile buildings, including: • Darwin Waterfront - Principal, Residential and Commercial • 130 Esplanade • C2 • Skytower • 13 & 15 Esplanade • 68 Esplanade • Kingston Green / Mitaros Place This year’s recipient of the “Chairperson of the Year” Award was announced by Phil Doyle last week with Peter Hawke, Chairperson
of 27 Woods St, more commonly known as ‘Skytower’ a CBD,24 storey building with 36 units being recognised for his efforts with Phil explaining “ Peter’s enthusiastic, diligent approach has seen this building overcome the usual challenges faced by most buildings, being: a lack of Committee members and associated leadership in relation to protecting the interests and capital asset of all owners leading to numerous symptoms such as regular occurrences of anti-social behaviour, inconsistent building maintenance and high levels of owner and occupant complaints”. Peter went on to encourage all owners to take a proactive approach stating “ If you want to safe-guard and maximise the value of your unit / building, I encourage you to join a Body Corporate Committee or better still, take on the Chairperson’s role”. He went on to say “The vast majority of people do the right thing. Despite being unpopular with the minority, the Chairperson has to be prepared to use the authority provided through the governance structure and supporting legislation to maximise harmonious, safe living amongst residents. This can only reap positive results for owners and occupants alike. We’ve certainly seen this at Skytower which has become one of Darwin’s premium residential addresses. Maintaining this enviable position is paramount in my mind and motivates me to continue in this role”. Phil supported Peter’s view, highlighting the
key characteristics to fulfil the Chairperson’s role as: • Taking an active interest in the building of which they are a co-unit owner • Availability / accessibility to all owners (email contact is fine!) • Communicating regularly with others (especially other Committee members) • Take a collaborative approach - ask good questions, research/inform oneself and listen to others, eliciting varying perspectives to assist in improving decision-making • Make decisions in a transparent and accountable manner supported by appropriate protocols and associated documentation Taking an industry leadership role through his pragmatic customer-focussed approach and ongoing support, Phil and his team of professional staff provide technical and governance advice as well as the ‘day-today’ administrative and financial services required to keep a Body Corporate functional and compliant with all statutory and legal requirements. Contact us for advice on Body Corporate matters. Having built a ‘sterling’ reputation for delivering great outcomes for property owners, we WILL respond to your phone calls, answer your emails, provide solutions to Body Corporate problems and with our onsite caretaking service, we do this 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This room will be a nerve centre, housing a computer bank able to bring everything, inside and out, to life or shut it all down. It will deliver music on demand to every room; television, including satellite channels will be available almost everywhere, doors will open, shut and lock as required. Fridge temperatures will be adjusted, as will be the temperatures in each individual room. Outside, the system will oversee removing the pool cover, adjusting the spa jets and setting the water features in motion. A room is transformed into a home cinema in a matter of seconds as the blinds go down, lights dim and a television screen miraculously appears from the roof. Security will be provided by CCTV cameras that switch on the televisions and display pictures of the front door or gate as soon as the bell is rung. If no one is near a screen, an audio function allows the occupants to speak to the visitor from anywhere in the home. And while guests are being entertained

to pre-dinner drinks in the lounge, the final preparations are being made to the adjoining dining room. Then, at the touch of a button, the wall slides away and the table is revealed. Finally the day is over and while the home owners of the future prepare for bed another buttons is pushed and part of the ceiling slides away revealing the night sky, allowing them to drift off to sleep amid cool night breezes under the stars. Many if not all of these functions are available now, but only through a bewildering collection of remotes, switches and buttons. In future everything will be programmed off a single keypad. Obsolescence will be a thing of the past. New functions can be added and older ones improved through a simple upgrade of the master computer’s software. Will all this add to resale value?
In the near future you would probably not cover costs, but greater recognition of the technology will create the demand and push down prices, so if you’re building now it pays to at least have the wiring in place. Frangipanis Whilst you are driving around our beautiful city take notice of all the lovely flowering frangipani trees...
The colours are absolutely amazing. Frangipanis are relatively small trees growing only to about 5-6m in height, but what they lack in height they make up in width often becoming as wide as they are tall. They have a well-behaved root system which makes them great for the home garden and for growing in pots. Frangipanis are also great survivors coping with drought, heat, neglect and insect and pest attack. They are also deciduous (which means they drop their leaves). With its gnarled branches, long leaves and distinctive flowers, the frangipani is easily one of the most common and identifiable trees. The bark is grey/green and scaly in appearance. The branches have a swollen appearance and the leaves, dark green on the top and a lighter shade of green underneath, cluster at the tips of branches. A cut made on any part of the tree will exude a milky, sticky sap that is poisonous to both humans and animals. Frangipani flowers appear in clusters, also at the end of the branches, and are distinctively scented. The petals are waxy with the centre of the flower a different colour to the rest. For
example the most common frangipani has white flowers with a yellow centre. There are many varieties ranging from deep crimson to orange , yellow and white (and every shade in between). Unlike some flowering trees which bloom for a few days or weeks, frangipanis go on flowering. Flowers appear from December to April in Australia, and even longer in our tropical climate. Nothing evokes that tropical feeling quite like the frangipani. Their sweet scent and sheer beauty make them universally loved and the blooms look sensational on the tree and as a cut flower. Pick up some freshly fallen blooms and float them in a bath or bowl of water and it’s easy to feel you’re relaxing in a fabulous tropical day spa! Relax, unwind and enjoy till next time...

apartments houses VS
WHICH IS BETTER?
With the growing need for medium density housing and the increasing popularity of apartments, O’Donoghues First National Real Estate Principal, Jeremy O’Donoghue does a reality check and takes a look at the pro’s and con’s of both living options. “Experts are saying apartment living is soon set to outpace the Great Australian Dream of the quarter acre block,” Jeremy said. “While affordability and ongoing low supply are the main driving factors behind this trend, there are other considerations that come into play as well. More women in the workforce, longer working hours and a sizeable shift in demographics, are all forces to be reckoned with when considering lifestyle options for today and into the future.” According to Jeremy, the ‘apartment generation’ will age and their family situations and lifestyle preferences will change, but traditional housing will remain a viable choice for Australians for many years to come. “The choice of whether to live in an apartment or a house, complete with a yard, will come down to whether you are looking to live in a property or rent. Then it is about you or your tenants’ lifecycle stages and financial means.” “The baby boomer generation are holding onto their homes longer at the moment, but eventually they will need to 122 November 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine
either downsize or seek other forms of retirement and aged care living, freeing up their homes for future generations.” However, it may be a case that by then the apartment generation will be used to living in apartments and even though they are ready to raise a family, they believe they can do so in the more affordable apartment option. “Not to mention the fact that their weekends will be free of mowing lawns, fixing fences or gardening. On the other hand, they may still see a strong need for having a yard where their children can run around, or a house which offers greater space in general.” Jeremy says investors also need to be considered when looking at apartments vs houses. “People looking to invest need to consider where the greatest returns on their capital will come from. This will take into account short term yields and returns as well as long term capital gains and growth, and both apartments and houses have much to offer here. Plus, much will depend on what local, state and federal governments do in
terms of policy and regulations. Currently, there is a long list of higher density governance issues which need to be resolved, such as assistance programs for emergency and disaster victims, initiatives for environmental programmes, insurance packages and environmentally sustainable design principles, to name a few. But whether you choose a house or an apartment, to live in or as an investment, it is important to get the right advice about the area from locals with knowledge and experience. Houses and apartments are both viable depending on personal preferences and individual circumstances. The final choice needs to deliver the right results and outcomes for the buyer.” For further information contact: Jeremy O’Donoghue, Principal, O’Donoghues First National Real Estate on 8942 8942.
