You thought Summer Session was big last year? You’d be right; it was the biggest, dance music festival Darwin has ever seen with nearly 6000 people rocking the sunset vibes at Mindil beach. Things have heated up even more for Summer Session 2015, with an additional stage (yes, that makes three!) And a line up that would make any dance music fan shake with excitement. This year we have truly opened up throttle. So where does the excitement start? The line-up. An electrifying mix of over 40 international, national and local DJ’s with their compass pointing north to Darwin this June. Flying in from Italy, electro powerhouse CROOKERS heads the line up. ‘Day n Nite’ with Kid Cudi made this DJ/Producer a household name but with new album Sixteen Chapel and hot track ‘I Just Can’t’ currently sitting on #4 on the ARIA Dance Charts (and climbing) we know this Italian stallion will have the crowd in his hands. Summer Session favourite Uberjak’d is back for another year this time with his good mate ‘The Freaks’ and ‘Swing’ singer SAVAGE who will be belting it out on the mic alongside the Aussie DJ/Producer.

Uk born, Australian owned, now LA based HELENA is hitting the Summer Session decks for the first time after just finishing her sell out U.S. and Asian tours. Big things to come from this lady and she is now signed to Tiesto’s record label. (Boo- yeah). When thinking of the dons of dance, its hard to go passed WARP BROTHERS who will be flying to Darwin from Germany to hit Mindil Beach. Tonite Only are sure to be a favourite this year purely because they know ‘Where the Party’s At’ (see what I did there?) M4SONIC brings his launchpad to Darwin after playing some of the biggest festivals in the world with over 27 million views on youtube for his ‘Weapon’ video - we can expect a show from this guy for all of our hardcore electro fans. Add a few more talented Aussie DJ’s and producers to the mix with GENERIK, ODD MOB, KILTER & FEAR OF DAWN and we have ourselves a session to be reckoned with.

With record numbers last year, Summer Session has become the largest dance music festival in the Territory. Add three stages, a VIP Marquee, market stalls, roving performers and Darwin can finally boast an event to rival the music festivals so many of us fly down south to attend. That’s the best part? You no longer have to travel interstate to see some of the best acts touring the plane, we are bringing the talent to you.

SO GET READY TO PARTY DARWIN... SUMMER IS COMING! Summer Session 2015 Midday to Midnight June 6 at Mindil Beach. General Admission & VIP tickets on sale now exclusively from www. summersession.com.au

Persuasion Marketing Persuasion Marketing was proud to present a unique event in Darwin recently. Enjoy Your Baby was held at the Museum and Art Gallery NT in April and provided local parents with an opportunity to hear from Debbie MacRae, Tresillian Nurse, author and nationally sought-after ‘baby listener’.

ebbie is a mother of four, the first being twins and has worked with babies and children for the last 30 years. Debbie completed her training with the Royal Society for the Welfare of Mothers and Babies, commonly known as Tresillian Family Care Centres. They are Australia’s largest child and family health organisation providing expert parenting advice to families during the early years. Debbie is also trained in early childhood education. Apart from her work providing inhome assistance to parents struggling with the issues of sleeping and feeding, she also works part time with young mums under the Youth House and Re-integration Service, a branch of the Red Cross. Debbie has recently released her book, Enjoy Your Baby, a practical guide to helping parents enjoy their journey through early parenthood. The book seeks to provide parents and families with a common sense, down to earth approach to nurturing and enjoying their babies. Debbie’s book can be purchased from her website www.enjoyyourbaby.com.au. Persuasion Marketing saw an opportunity to provide the parents of Darwin with access to Debbie’s wisdom and services after Persuasion Director, Mia Fileman, received invaluable assistance with young son James.

From waking several times a night to now sleeping up to 12 hours, Mia’s sanity has been restored by Debbie’s gentle and safe approach to settling babies. Persuasion was delighted to receive sponsorship and support from local businesses including Vibe Hotel Darwin Waterfront, Relocate Organising, Little Rompers, Milly Molly Mandy, Darwin Life magazine, and Captured Moments Photography. The Museum Art Gallery NT venue provided an ideal location for guests to enjoy a social evening, with sparkling and delicious canapés provided by Cornucopia Museum Café, and was well attended by both parents and babies! Attendees were thrilled to be given the opportunity to ask questions and have them answered in a very personal way by Debbie. Signed copies of Debbie’s book were snapped up at the event and have no doubt been well read already. Persuasion Marketing is a strategic marketing business owned and run by Mia Fileman who relocated to Darwin in 2013 with husband David, a Defence Force pilot. Mia loves the Darwin lifestyle and would like to see more events and keynote speakers in the Top End. With perfect event venues such as MAGNT available, Mia sees the potential to offer more services like Enjoy Your Baby to Top End residents.

Event organisation and management is just one string in the Persuasion Marketing bow. Specialising in strategy, digital marketing, lead generation and local activation, Persuasion becomes an essential component of their client’s business, effectively forming an outsourced marketing department. Mia and her team have clients in Darwin, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, as well as several clients in the regional city of Toowoomba in Queensland where Persuasion Marketing was born. The team boasts a wide range of skills and experience, and takes pride in immersing themselves in the industries and communities of their clients. From start-ups to national companies, Persuasion will take a business from strength to strength, with the focus on strategy development and implementation. Organising and running an event like Enjoy Your Baby has provided Persuasion Marketing with the opportunity to introduce its services to the region. Mia and her team believe that there is huge potential for Darwin businesses to grow with the right marketing advice, and they look forward to a bright future in the Top End.

BY C AT H Y HUGGETT

On a recent trip interstate, after days of running madly from one place to the next, hailing taxis, attending to commitments and trying to squeeze three days worth of errands into each day, I finally scored a day to myself. A day with no one to meet with, nothing to buy, no paperwork to fill in and no demands on my time. With a happy little smirk of freedom I took myself off to the local art gallery for a day of my favorite kind of R and R. Within minutes of walking through the door I felt calm, rejuvenated and inspired and it got me thinking about what a wonderful environment art galleries are for children. To share the gallery experience with a child really demonstrates what an all encompassing, holistic learning experience viewing art is for children. Their curiosity is inspired and they begin to really develop a sense of the way the world has evolved and changed in a variety of social, historical and cultural contexts. So many students I’ve taught over the years have either never been to an art gallery or certainly don’t go regularly. For those students to try and create artworks of their own with no first hand experience of what is possible, makes it difficult for them to unearth and develop their own ideas. I would urge all parents 36

DarwinLife Magazine

to take their children to art galleries on a regular basis. You will be amazed at the conversations that open up between you and your child during and after the experience. The benefits for your child are numerous; they will become more observant, more analytical and reflective and may even come away inspired to try their hand at some creative pursuits. Through a child’s eyes, an art gallery is a place that they can come away from thinking, ‘I want to do that!’ It really is time to broaden our thinking about what helps children to become successful learners. Art is at the very heart of who we are as makers, thinkers and innovators. And it has been that way since the beginning of time. Until next time - see, make, do!

Happy children behave better, because they are less stressed and this leads to happier families.

. They need parents that they can rely on to be calm, confident and who are in charge because that keeps them feeling safe. . They need consistency of routines with healthy sleep patterns. They also need healthy eating which is not feeding them the same thing every day because it is easy and “that is all that they like.” Nutritionally sound diets that offer a range of tastes and textures support growing bodies and are essential. Drinking water regularly is also necessary. These are all essential for a child’s growing body, so when this is missing the body will become stressed. Stressed children make more mistakes and lose control quicker to minor triggers.

3

6 7

. Children need to get outside and play, yes even in the tropics. Get them out of the air-conditioner and into the fresh air, hats and sunscreen where necessary. Their play needs to be balanced, with high energy activities balanced with times of quiet relaxation. . They need to be taught how to express and have their emotions acknowledged. We are allowed to be angry but it is how we deal with it that matters. You need to express your emotions too, as long as you model “I feel” not “you make me” statements. . Children need to understand that their body reactions are a warning sign that they can learn to be in control of. This leads to managing our own emotions.

. When they are out of control of their emotions they need to be taught strategies that gradually lead to self- control . They need to be listened to. Parents consistently complain to me that their children don’t listen. Children consistently tell me that their parents don’t listen. . Children must be encouraged to make choices, appropriate to their age, and developmental level. . They need to have fun with their parents, laugh, learn and live together so then . THEY KNOW THAT THEY ARE LOVED AND BELONG TO A SUPPORTIVE FAMILY

Why I love to train The real reason I love my training so much is not that you get fit or learn how to defend yourself. It’s all the other factors that you developed that are not always seen or tangible. It’s the confidence, courage that you build within, that is really where the value is. It’s the sense of purpose or contribution you make to other that inspires one. Most people come and train to get fit, lose weight, or learn to defend themselves. These are all good things to learn and be competent with. You could train all your life and still have moves you need to master, however after many years of training you really see these as a means or path and your training has a deeper meaning.

Your training becomes a direct reflection of yourself, your attitude and how you approach your life. If you train hard and are direct most likely you have the same approach in all areas of your life such as work. If you cut corners or are lazy in training the same may be apparent in other areas of your life too. Often the hardest thing is to be direct and throw that strike without hesitation. Often I see people when sparring not always hitting the mark or not committing. This is evident a lot with new students. The same can be said about making a commitment in life, often people hesitate due to fear and don’t proceed. Hence opportunities are missed in both insistences.

Do you dread the upcoming ‘Dry’ season for fear of succumbing to colds/flu??? Does it seem to happen at the change of weather, or after visiting friends or family ‘down south’??? A person with a good immune system should be able to withstand other people sneezing or coughing around them, & not get sick. There are many factors which contribute to a weakened immune system – these include increased stress; lack of sleep/ rest or relaxation time; lack of exercise; & poor food choices. Colds & flu’s are often caused by a virus, commonly the rhinovirus. Antibiotics only target bacteria – so they are useless against colds & flu’s. Fortunately we have herbs & nutrients which can manage these viruses & support the immune system. Zinc & vitamin C are key nutrients in keeping the immune system strong. There’s lots of scientific evidence to support how they boost the immune system & the healing process. 46

DarwinLife Magazine

Common foods that are high in both zinc & vitamin C include walnuts, coconut, buckwheat, oysters, tomatoes, parsley, peas & artichokes. Simple lifestyle choices to BOOST your immune system this ‘Dry’ season: • Eat a wide variety of fresh, whole foods daily i.e. fruit & veggies, lean meats, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs & fish. • Avoid foods low in nutrients such as refined & processed foods, sugars, white flour products & alcohol. • Drink at least 2L water daily. • Exercise regularly (ie 3-4 times week) • Get a good night’s sleep, & make sure you have some ‘chillout’ time during your week.

TIPS: • Diffuse eucalyptus, peppermint, thyme or lavender essential oils in a burner, or even a few drops on a tissue to sniff throughout the day. (Warning- do NOT take orally). • Keep a jar of honey (preferably Manuka) with couple roughly chopped garlic cloves handy. Soothe your throat with a teaspoon of honey as required. • Sip thyme leaf tea with Manuka/garlic honey…very antimicrobial & soothing. • Regularly include garlic in your diet – antimicrobial, antioxidant, lowers cholesterol & blood pressure. Prevention is always better than cure…..so follow these simple dietary & lifestyle tips to support a healthy immune system. If

you do find yourself catching one too many colds – make an appointment TODAY to get your immune system back on track quickly, with the extra support you need from a qualified naturopath!!

What are the benefits of using Vitamin A on our skin? Our skin is made up of cells and free radicals cause inflammation and damage within those cells. Cells that are damaged stop functioning properly and this causes many skin problems such as pigmentation, acne, Rosacea, wrinkles and dehydration. Vitamin A is an antioxidant that works at a cellular level to fight free radical production, repair DNA damage and increase cellular turnover.

Having an exfoliating, lightening and brightening action, Vitamin A will improve the appearance of pigmentation. Vitamin A also calms the sebaceous gland and regulates oil production thereby reducing acne. Best of all, it is anti-ageing as it stimulates collagen and elastin reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Plus our Vitamin A cosmeceuticals have been expertly formulated using the latest cutting edge science so you can enjoy the antiageing benefits without any of the irritation!

“TEXT NECK”.

New evidence on how tech is ruining our posture

Smartphone users spend an average of 700 to 1400 hours each year looking down at their device, this forward posture places up to 27 kg of force on their neck, according to new research from the USA. The research by Spinal Surgeon Dr Kenneth Hansraj, demonstrated the impact of bending your head down to peer at a mobile device – an increasingly common health problem becoming known as ‘text neck’. Mobile devices are a part of our lives, a point that isn’t going to change, however the way we use them needs to change. The forces required to maintain good posture are complex, but imagine balancing a bowling ball on the top of a cricket stump and you get some idea of the forces involved. Technology has become a constant for people of all ages and ‘text neck’ and the ‘iPad hunch’ are an increasingly common side-effect. The research measured the forces placed on the neck when the head is leaned forward. In a normal standing position, an average adult head exerts about 5kg, but when the head tilts forwards at 60 degrees, the force exerted on the neck is more than 27 kg. Chiropractors are seeing an increasing number of patients with technology induced spinal pain, fortunately these kind of studies help us explain to the community the health dangers of bad posture while texting or using iPads for some time. This is especially the case with younger people who frequently get so absorbed in a game or a text conversation that they hunch over the device, this places a great strain upon the neck. Many young people are spending hours hunched over their device, and most importantly, at a time when their spines are still developing. As a result of this a surprising number are experiencing really unpleasant pain after too many hours bent over a screen. On a good note, people can reduce the risk of text neck by taking regular breaks from their devices, changing the way they used devices so they didn’t hunch over to look at them.

MICRO T R A I N I N G

The problem

Working long hours in tough conditions leaves very little time for strength training and building serious muscle. Hour long workouts with your mates are impossible and having luxuries like foam rolling sessions are a thing of the past. Does working in these conditions make fitness goals unachievable?

The solution

Shorter sessions completed more frequently maybe the answer you are looking for. The "micro workout" is a method that has been adopted in recent years in a variety of different time frames, this version will consisting of 20 minute sessions focusing on one movement pattern per workout with six workouts per week. Although sessions are described as minimal, they must be performed with maximal effort. It's important to note that "micro" workouts are not for beginner lifters, but rather for the more experienced athlete who has already built a solid foundation of correct movement, mobility and strength.

Do it once, do it right. The movement patterns that you will be using for each "micro" are as follows; • Squat • Carry • Push • Pull • Event (strongman) • Conditioning (patternless)

The exercises used for each of the movement pattern is up to the individual, bearing in mind the hardest movement should be completed as early as possible in the week when you are most fresh. Some options would be; • Front Squat • Farmers Walk • Bench Press • Pull-up • Stone lift • Sprints

With so many exercise options to choose from make an educated choice to perform movements that suit your body mechanics when training for strength. When looking for maximal strength gains yourself a lever advantage is a great way to stay ahead of the game. For example if you've been using a conventional deadlift for some time try switching over to a sumo deadlift. By adopting a wider stance with your centre of mass closer to the bar you will actually be covering less distance than before, thus creating the advantage.

HOW TO GROW

healthy, delicious herbs I N YO U R G A R D E N A N D I N D O O R S.

H

erbs have long been grown for both their medicinal and culinary value. They may cure colds, help you sleep and add flavour and zest to dinner. Fortunately for home gardeners, growing herbs is relatively easy. They thrive in just about any type of soil, do not require much fertilizer, and are not often bothered by insect or disease pests. Defined as a plant without a woody stem that dies back at the end of each growing season, herbs were once considered a gift of the gods. Elaborate ceremonies and rituals celebrated their growth, harvest and use. Today, herbs are popular in many home gardens, where their leaves are utilized for flavouring and an entire plant may be used for medicinal purposes. Our dry season is the best time to grow herbs. Every garden should have basil, rosemary, chives, oregano, parsley, mint, French tarragon, stevia and sage just to name a few.

Stevia Stevia is a sweetener and a sugar substitute extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. Stevia has up to 150 times the sweetness of sugar...it also has a negligible effect on blood glucose which makes stevia attractive to people on carbohydrate controlled diets. Stevia’s taste has a slower onset and longer duration than that of sugar, and some of its extracts may have a bitter or liquorice -like aftertaste at high concentrations. Great to drop a leaf or two in your tea if you like to drink it sweet.

Basil Basil is one of

the most valuable plants in your garden, and is a perfect flavouring with tomatoes. They are easy to look after and they contribute much to many different types of dishes in the kitchen. The edible basil that is most familiar to most people would be Sweet or Italian Basil . The plant has large, soft, fragrant, lush foliage that is frost tender, so it grows well through the dry and throughout most of the year. Sweet Basil is the basis of many Italian dishes including popular pesto sauce, which is a combination of garlic, olive oil, pine nuts, basil and shavings of parmesan cheese. Basil plants can be grown in containers or in the ground. They are sun-loving plants so a warm location is desirable. The size of the leaves can be a guide to where they can be located in the garden. The larger the leaf the more shade they will tolerate, so small leaved plants need to capture the most sun.

Rosemary Rosemary grows as a small evergreen shrub and believe it or not it is related to mint. Its leaves look like flat pine-tree needles, deep green in colour on top while silver-white on their underside. Its memorable flavour and unique health benefits makes it an indispensable herb for every kitchen. Looking like a small sprig from an evergreen tree the wonderful smell and assertively pine-like fragrance and pungent flavour of rosemary goes a long way to flavour to chicken, lamb, pork, salmon and tuna dishes as well as many soups and sauces. Rosemary is evergreen but unfortunately struggles to grow through our wet season due to the rain and humidity. Herbs used properly are very often as effective as medical drugs or more so without the side effects, cost and potential for dependency. Herbs help people become enabled, instead of disabled. They leave us stronger, not weaker.

Until next time, happy herb growing.....
