NORTHERN TERRITORY

C O M P A N I E S

TAKE IT TO THE WORLD STAGE

Three companies based in the Northern Territory have returned from one of the world’s most prestigious oil and gas events with stories to tell. Fingers Specialised Metal Fabrication, Hydraulink NT with associated KM Engineering (HKME) and Combined Communication Solutions took part in the 2013 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, USA, which attracted more than 100,000 attendees and 2,700 exhibitors. The three companies were identified by INPEX in consultation with the Northern Territory Industry Capability Network (ICN) for the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AMCHAM) trade mission to OTC. INPEX, the operator of the Ichthys LNG Project, was a major sponsor of the trade mission and part-funded the participation by Northern Territory industry. Fingers Specialised Metal Fabrication Managing Director Mark Taylor said the networking opportunities were invaluable. “The trip was a great way to meet the big players in the global oil and gas industry, but also for building

relationships with some of the companies we’re already working with on the Ichthys LNG Project,” he said. “There were 34 other Australian resource companies forming the AMCHAM delegation alone.” “Even the plane flights proved great for talking shop.” Stuart Kenny, General Manager Northern Australia of Austal Service which recently acquired HKME, said the conference was extraordinary. “It provided a fantastic linkage to established, international supply chains,” he said. “And it gave us great insight into the skills and capacity required as our business grows to meet demand from the oil and gas sector.” ICN helps Australian businesses access opportunities in industry, government and major projects. The Ichthys LNG Project has contracted the Northern Territory ICN to assist local companies develop and identify business opportunities related to the Project.

Mark Taylor and wife Marian outside their family owned business in Darwin.

INPEX General Manager External Affairs and Joint Venture Bill Townsend said the company was committed to supporting local businesses. “We are not only committed to identifying prospects for Territory businesses to compete for work on the Ichthys LNG Project, but also to assisting local industry to access the global oil and gas market,” he said. “The trade mission was a way for these local companies to gain exposure to international industry opportunities – something they may never have experienced otherwise.” July 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

THANK YOU FOR VISITING OUR STAND AT THE EXPO

The lucky winner of our Red Balloon experience in Darwin competition was Amy and Doug Street!

We also would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our FREE must see oil and gas investment seminar. See below for details!

THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE FREE INVESTMENT SEMINAR IN DARWIN

Darwin is such an exciting place to live and work right now. Oil & Gas is the big glamour Business in town right now, but let’s not forget the other things that are forging ahead as well; Œ The Darwin Airport Expansion Œ The Marine Supply Base Œ The New Goal Œ The New Port Expansion Also add a multitude of onshore Oil, Gas & Mining ventures and exploration companies looking for new Mining opportunities in the N.T. Over 300 million was spent last year on exploration alone searching for onshore Oil & Gas, all of which will add to the NT economy for decades to come. Some interesting facts on Inpex Blaydon Point is the largest parcel of land being developed in Australia today with Inpex in Darwin being the largest overseas investment by Japan ever. Inpex is the second largest Insurance policy ever written in Australia to date. - I don’t know about you but this makes me really excited about the future of Darwin. Gwelo Developments is one of Darwin’s largest property developers and has been operating in Darwin for over 35 years

now and have built some of Darwin’s landmark buildings over this time. Gwelo Developments have stood the test of time and have created many happy owners and investors over the past few decades. Look at some of Gwelo Developments early buildings in Palmerston, Parap, Stuart park and Cullen bay. The purchase price paid decades ago when those buildings were new, compared with the value of these homes and units today, you would have doubled your money every 9 years. Mid Darwin Cup Carnival It’s just after five on the first Monday in August, the barriers are set, all bets have been placed, and the anticipation is palpable. It is, of course, the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup and in excess of 21,000 people have converged at the Darwin Turf Club. They have travelled from near and far just for the chance to witness the ultimate in Northern Territory Racing. For the winning horse, jockey and connections of the 2013 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup it will mean more than taking home the lion’s share of the $200 000 purse but also earning their place in the history books to be forever recognised as the victors in the 57th running of the now legendary race. Cup Day is the pinnacle of the annual, month-long racing feast of non-stop action on and off the track. It strings together eight days of racing across the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival boasting high-quality fields and attracting some of the biggest names in horseracing from across the country including the likes of Gai Waterhouse,

Peter Moody and David Hayes just to name a few. The spine tingling action on the track is only rivalled by the functions and fabulous fashion off it. Northern Territory Milliners, Designers and Retailers are called upon to adorn thousands of ladies in frocks, fascinators and accessories to rival any trackside fashion down south. The blokes even do their bit dusting off their suits and ties for the racing season. It’s truly the height of elegance, excitement and entertainment in the Northern Territory. So, if you only go to one event this year make sure it’s during the 2013 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup.

REINVENTING RACING

for ladies

WITH ‘ALERT THE JEWELLER’ & WOMEN IN THOROUGHBRED RACING NT

There’s a change in the air at horse racing tracks across the Northern Territory and it smells like perfume, champagne and victory. The Women in Thoroughbred Racing NT Association was founded in 2009 by a small group of female racing enthusiasts who formed a syndicate which now boasts over 125 passionate members. WTRNT provides a social network for its members while raising money to support and promote female apprentices, jockeys and trainers in the Northern Territory.

In 2011 a group of 36 female owners along with Northern Territory trainer Elisha Brown each purchased fifty per cent shares in the now fouryear-old gelding ‘ALERT THE JEWELLER’ affectionately known as ‘AJ’. But the promising horse had a rocky start in the Top End - after relocating from Melbourne, AJ suffered badly in the Darwin humidity. However, he recovered with a vengeance, running second in his first outing at the Darwin Turf Club in June last year before claiming a victory on Day One of the 2012 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival. But as history would have it, the true sensation of ‘Alert the Jeweller’ would be borne on Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Day when he steamed home to victory in the Envirobank Invitational Stakes, sending 36 female owners into raptures and up onto the winners’ dais. This marked the true arrival of WTRNT as a force to be reckoned with inside racing circles. “AJ is truly a jewel,” WTRNT Chairperson Michelle Graham said. “He has arrived back in Darwin after a recent, successful stint racing in Melbourne and we expect some more spine tingling moments from him during this year’s Carlton Mid Carlton Cup Carnival,” she said. So keep an eye or more than likely an ear out for the ladies in WTRNT and Alert the Jeweller during the Carnival as their wave of excitement is sure to soar through the crowd.

The Horse H AW KS BAY

If there’s one story that simply must be told ahead of the running of the 57th Carlton Mid Darwin Cup it is that of notoriously gallant galloper Hawks Bay.

Already adorned with labels of courageous, tough and gallant if he’s able to pull off the remarkable feat of claiming a third straight Carlton Mid Darwin Cup victory Hawks Bay will have earned the title of Legend. The seven-year old veteran gelding sent the 21 000 strong crowd into raptures in 2012, when he found something extra within to hold out the favourite Bolton by a nose, claiming his second straight Carlton Mid Darwin Cup triumph. Trainer Neil Dyer put the victory down to the horse’s undeniable fighting spirit, winning against the odds and carrying a record 64.5 kilograms. “He just tries so hard, he’s a big, honest trier. Even though he’s so big anyway, he grows an extra hand in the mounting yard when the jockey gets on, Dyer said. “All the night before the Cup we had his legs in ice because we thought he had a problem arising. “We just knew if we could get him right he’d give it a big shake and he did. Even if he had come second, and they did call him second on the line, we still had lumps in our throats and we had tears in our eyes, we were just so happy with his effort, Dyer said.

But if Hawks Bay is to win this August it’ll again be through adversity after undergoing stem cell surgery for a suspensory ligament injury he only raced again for the first time in May. In a controversial move Dyer has opted to leave Hawks Bay to race down south until around three weeks before the Cup and he won’t race at all in Darwin until the big race. Dyer admits it is a tactical ploy. “He’s had a couple of excellent runs at Flemington and his injury isn’t bothering him whatsoever. We do monitor it every day, we treat him for it to keep it cool and make sure everything is

alright but it is not an issue at the moment,” said Dyer. “If he comes up here and wins one lead-up race his rating will go up four points and he’s likely to get another kilo or kilo and a half in the Cup which we can’t carry, I wouldn’t run him,” he said. “He’s so relaxed and comfortable up here and that’s why I reckon he’s the type of horse that I can bring up here just for one run.” 2013 will be Hawks Bay’s fifth straight start in the Northern Territory’s most prestigious race. He finished second in 2009 and 2010 before claiming victory in 2011 and 2012.

Ambassador

INTRODUCING THE 2013 CARLTON MID DARWIN CUP CARNIVAL

KAHLIA-MAY GEPP Northern Territory Racing Season is here again and for some the Fashion supersedes the racing with Fashionistas often facing off just as fiercely as the thoroughbreds. For those needing some raceday fashion guidance who better to ask than the stunning 2013 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival Ambassador Kahlia-May Gepp. The former model, now online fashion boutique owner and budding designer has three key tips for those heading to the track this racing season. 1. DON’T BE AFRAID OF COLOUR While I am personally a huge fan of the classic look, I feel like there is no better time than the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival to experiment with prints and colour. Be sure to keep your accessories simple when wearing busy or colourful prints. If you find prints a bit daunting try a glamorous dress in navy, forest green or a beautiful jewel tone. 2. KEEP IT CLASSY A race day is not the time to pull out your tightest or shortest dress, save it for the nightclub ladies! It’s time for elegance,

dresses should be just above the knee and strapless can work but make sure it’s well fitted you don’t want to spend all day pulling at your dress. 3. CHOOSE APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR There’s nothing worse than a beautiful woman dressed to the nines for the races only for her to be seen with bare, blistered feet carrying her shoes at the end of the day. Best tips to avoid this unfortunately common fashion faux pas are to wear your shoes in first and to chose a shoe with a thicker heal or perhaps even opt for a wedge. Kahlia-May is sure to be leading the trackside fashion stakes thanks to our Ambassador sponsors MIIO Boutique, Just Looking, Simply Elegant Millinery, Stomp Shoes, Pearl Galleria and Impact Hair Studio.

THE

FAM ILY

Business Husband and wife team Essie (Sheila) and Keith Arnold are stalwarts of the industry in the Northern Territory and have been coming to the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival since 1973. Each came originally from families with racing backgrounds and in 1970 when they married in Alice Springs it seemed inevitable racing would also play a huge part in their future together. After dedicating decades to the industry, the pair did attempt a life away from the racing scene, borrowing a caravan to travel around the country only to find they were certainly not grey nomads, instead returning to the hard work, early mornings and late

For the Arnold family the horseracing business is more than a way to earn a living - it’s a passion, it’s in their blood, it’s a way of life.

nights required to train their family of thoroughbreds. “We only lasted a couple of days it was just so boring, so caravanning wasn’t an option,” said Essie. “Now we do travel but we do it with our four-legged children, the horses, which is much more exciting,” she said. The pair raised three boys together and it is little surprise they too took up the family business, all becoming accomplished jockeys in their own right. Tragically the couple lost Tom eight years ago, Doug is currently living in Hong Kong as a track work rider while Steven is now based in Victoria earning rides in some of Australia’s

most decorated races. Steven has ridden three winners of the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup including one dead heat on Kingston Reserve in 1995 as well as back-to-back triumphs on reigning champion Hawks Bay and he’ll saddle up again this August in a bid for three straight Cup wins. “The achievements Steven has had have just been amazing. When I go down and see him in the cox plate or one of the big races I just pinch myself, I just think it’s wonderful,” said proud Mum Essie. Let’s hope we see the Arnolds collecting many trophies up on the dais during this year’s Carnival.

HOOKED UP B O A T

SOLAR SUNWERX Gurbe moved to Darwin 30 years ago and fell in love with the town and continued to spend many years here.

C L U B

Back in 2006, Peter & Viv Green started their business with one 4.8 metre boat, 8 years later they now have a fleet of 9 boats. Hooked Up Boat Club offers their members the opportunity to use a boat to the same high standards of quality fit out that they would normally own themselves; but without the purchase or maintenance responsibilities! Of course the main reason to use a boat in the Top End is to go fishing, Hooked Up Boat Club also has available for members premium fishing equipment and exclusive deals, and if your plan is for longer than just a day on the harbour, there’s camping and outdoor equipment on hand too. Everybody has different reasons for getting into small business. For Peter & Viv it was a case of circumstance. “We wanted to take my Mum fishing,” says Peter “but

the boat we had wasn’t big enough for the 3 of us and the only boats we could hire 8 years ago were no bigger.” The thing they get the most satisfaction out of in their job is the people they meet. “We love that we can offer them the chance at a ‘once in a lifetime’ story.” A standard package includes an ice box with fresh ice, gaff, nett and colour GPS/Sounder. You can tow the boats yourself or we offer walk on walk off service into Darwin harbor.

He moved away for a couple of years but the attraction of Darwin was too great to keep him away and he again, moved back to the NT just over a year ago. “I got involved with Solar Sunwerx as the company is owned and operated by my brother and his family in Melbourne,” Gurbe explains. “We thought it would be a great idea to introduce the business to the Territory.” Gurbe’s family has had Solar Sunwerx in the pipeline for the last 12 months. They didn’t want to open their doors to the NT until they had perfected their Solar Hot Water Systems. “This integrated evacuated tube system is the most efficient and cost effective Solar Hot Water System and it offers far better performance and value than the older, more traditional flat plate collectors, Gurbe explains. One advantage is, if one or two of the tubes break, the system still operates.” Solar Sunwerx NT has recently opened on the Stuart Hwy at Winnellie in May and they have already had a

steady flow of enquiries and sales. “Solar power is the way of the future; Saving power, energy and our planet.” Solar Power will guarantee that you will avoid the constant rising power costs. The current buy back scheme in the NT is the best in Australia, but will not last long, so now is the best time to invest in Solar. Gurbe continues, - “And I say “invest” because where else can you invest approximately $12,600 and get a return of approximately $2,000 per year?” This investment is not only for residential, but is an even better investment for all commercial buildings as you get the added benefits of Tax Rebates and Depreciation. So what are you waiting for? Give the friendly family owned and operated team at Solar Sunwerx a call to get your free quote and get started on your new investment plan today.

LASER COSMETIC Although running your own business is a lot of hard work, and it can take awhile to get it established, for many it is the rewards that make this worthwhile. This is definitely the case for Georgina Lee Martin – a clinical professor who now works as a Clinical Aesthetician. She has the benefit of enjoying one of the top advantages of small business – flexible working hours. With a great passion for travel, Lee says that one of the best things about her business is that she has the opportunity to take time off when she needs to and subsequently manages to be in Asia or Europe on a regular basis.

Working for herself and by herself is definitely her preference and the advantages are not just for her – the clients benefit from it too. Lee offers free assessments, allowing people to come in for an appointment to discuss their needs, and get to talk directly to her about what they want and what services she can offer. “A lot of people like the confidence of being able to talk to the person who owns the business and I’m more invested in the service I offer because of this. When you don’t have a boss standing behind you limiting what you do, you can make decisions and be flexible to accommodate for people’s individual needs in a more focused way.” Darwin Laser Cosmetic offers a wide range of services, but has a special focus on laser concepts in skin care and collagen replacement therapy. FURRY Godmother With two children underfoot at the time and a new baby just arrived, the business could not be more of a perfect fit for the Davies family. “If you’d told me two or three years ago that I’d be owning a kennel I’d have laughed at you,” says Jason, “but The Furry Godmother had such a good reputation it was too good an opportunity to pass up. It’s such a great environment for us as a young family. The kids are always around the pets, playing with the dogs and cats, and being with us.” Dog and cat boarding is The Furry Godmother’s main business and it is the most centrally located kennel in Darwin, conveniently located at the airport. It is also the only kennel in the NT that has accreditation by the Pet Industry Association of Australia, and is

It is not just the only fully air-conditioned kennel in Darwin, but also welcomes new arrivals with a spa bath, and provides gourmet meals to all of its guests. Very much a luxury kennel, the animals are provided with comfortable chairs and beds, flat screen TVs and DVDs, as well as complimentary baths throughout their stay. Alpha Homes NT When George and Nick Tsikouris decided to build and sell some houses for themselves more than a decade ago, they had little idea about what was about to happen.

Originally in the roofing business, the two brothers built their first home 12 years ago and not only did they enjoy the process, they discovered they were also pretty good at it too. “At the start, we had no intention to build for other people,” says Nick. “We were building for ourselves, and a few people approached us and asked why we didn’t start building for others. The four of us sat down together, talked about it and decided we should give it a go.” George’s wife Nat is clearly proud of what the four of them have achieved together. “The boys were never just handed this business. They’ve worked really hard since leaving school, right up to today. We’re all only in our 30’s and we have really worked at establishing a good reputation, by producing quality homes. We’re all really close as a family and have 28

the same goals and values.” Started just 6 months ago by the closeknit family team, they are now making their mark on the Darwin property scene by building some of the highest quality homes on the market. Alpha Homes have a range of floor plans to choose from, and pride themselves on customizing, and offering things that are normally considered ‘extras’, as standard inclusions. Nick explains. “When we first meet with clients, it’s important to understand what it is they’re looking for in a home. Sometimes they come with a set of their own drawings, and we can then work with our draftsman to give them what they want. Often clients just want to make small changes to existing floor plans but whatever the change they want, we do our best to make it happen.” The Tsikouris team are thrilled to offer

a brand new display home for their prospective clients this July. A stunning two storey waterfront property at 64 O’Ferrals Road Bayview, the home is a shining example of the type of high quality work the team produces. A future display home will also be available later in 2013 in Zuccoli. HAIR FREE

Sandra McHenry probably had no clue when she was nursing in Brisbane that one day she would be running the only Hairfree, Tattfree centre in the Northern Territory. Six years on and her business continues to grow and prosper. The Hairfree centre Darwin now has 4 staff, servicing a local client base, conveniently located just off Cavenagh Street. Sandra grew up in Darwin, but while living and nursing in Brisbane came across an opportunity to own a Hairfree centre in NSW. This gave her the chance to learn the ropes of the franchise business. In 2007 she decided to bring the concept to Darwin as there was a place in the market for a designated hair removal business offering affordable treatments. Hairfree has 90 centres Australia wide offering SPL hair removal treatments. The machinery is medical grade and is TGA approved. Until recently hair removal has been the focus of the business, however the organisation recently branched out, launching Tattfree tattoo removal. This technology uses a new and innovative method of removal that will address all ink colors and the procedure will give those with multi colored ink an option for removal that until now has not been a possibility. Sandra’s nursing background made the move to this specialty business a complimentary move. All the staff at the Hairfree Centre are trained and laser safety certified, and the team have just completed infection control certification for the Tattoo

removal procedures. Sandra can’t imagine not running her own business now. “It’s something I had wanted to do for a long time. I had management and supervisory roles in other employment, but it is so rewarding to run your own business. I am no longer a slave to a roster and shift work which if you ask a lot of those in the nursing profession, is one of the least desirable aspects of the profession. It is constant commitment having your own business but with a great team working with you, the outcomes we deliver for clients give the greatest rewards.” You can find out more about Hairfree and Tattfree services on their websites www.hairfreeservices.com and www.tattfree.com.au

PET SPA

After a career in the Royal Australian Navy, pet grooming could not have been a more different career choice, but for Michelle it was a natural progression. “I saw a huge gap in the market in Darwin. Many people were just shaving their dogs to keep them cool for summer, but I found in my own research that there was a whole lot more that could be offered.” In addition to this realization, Michelle also wanted a lifestyle that allowed her more time with 3 children, 2 of which have special needs. Combining work with getting them to specialist appointments, and caring for them was becoming a real challenge and self employment seemed like a good solution, giving her some part time work plus extra income. Little did she know the business would take on a life of its own and after 6 years of trading, now employs three staff and is putting some much need glamour

What started out as helping a relative with their dog grooming business turned into an unexpected passion, and before she knew it, Michelle Auld had a totally new career.

into the lives of Darwin’s furry friends. Michelle has been awarded ‘Best Canine Groomer of the Year’ for the past 2 years at the Master Dog Breeders Association Awards. Darwin Pet Spa offers a range of professional grooming services for dogs and cats, including luxury aromatic spa treatments, paw massage, Japanese charcoal treatments, coat styling, specialised coat colouring options, nail art, and even temporary dye spray tattoos – the most recent of which was a fish tattoo on a cat. Breed specific styling is available to make your schnauzer look like a schnauzer and your west highland white terrier look like a terrier! Cat grooming has become more popular recently, specifically in the form of lion trims for cats. The cat is trimmed down to just have a lion’s mane left, a lions’ tip of their tail and 4 little booties. This is

very popular with longhaired breeds in the heat, and also helps cat lovers with allergies to continue to love their cats! Best of all, Darwin Pet Spa offer nonsedating grooming for cats so there is no need for a trip to the vet to untangle that knotty mess.

photography When Paul and Julie Arnold started exploring outback Australia more than two decades ago, they had no idea this was the beginning of a shared career that would become a defining feature of their lives. The Arnolds are passionate about Australia’s landscape – the flora and fauna, the remarkable country, the ever changing colour and light. As travellers do, Paul started to photograph their journeys, purely for his own enjoyment. However as they met people on the road, they were surprised at the number of requests they got to buy copies of his images. They responded to this demand, and the seed of an idea grew. Before they knew it they were in Darwin, selling prints of Paul’s images at the markets. Three years passed, their Mitchell street store was opened and Julie’s nursing career was a thing of the past. That was 8 years ago and the business today has taken on a life of its own. Paul Arnold Bush Photography is best known for its prints of stunning Australian scenery, adorning the walls of local homes as well as heading over the oceans on postcards, calendars and books in many a tourist’s suitcase. photographic developments progressing at light speed in recent years, the need to innovate and find a point of difference has never been more important. Julie Arnold explains. “Everyone has a camera now and much better skills than before. People can take their own images, digitally edit them and get them printed at reasonable cost. The challenge for us is to find a way to produce a product that the average person cannot”. After considerable research and investigation, Paul Arnold Bush Photography is now venturing into the arts with fine art prints for exhibitions and collectors. Images taken on the highest quality equipment, and reproduced to museum grade quality framed prints offer a truly unique object that will increase in value over time. In line with their new direction, the company has rebranded with a fresh, clean, new look and a new direction as their fine art works have attracted interest from galleries around

the country for exhibition. “What we’re looking to achieve is a new dimension of quality in photography,’ says Julie. “Images shot on $100,000 worth of equipment, and produced on the finest quality archival materials become more than just a picture for your wall, they are a one of a kind investment and will bring immense pleasure to the discerning collector”.

They don’t come more local than Holly Copping. She was born and raised in the Territory and is now a proud local business owner. Being a Territorian gives her a great understanding of the impact the Top End can have on your skin. But it was during time away from Darwin that she learnt of the range of treatments available, that generally Territorians had to travel south to receive.

After completing a Diploma of Beauty Therapy in Queensland, Holly returned to Darwin to work. As her career progressed she became frustrated with the limitations of traditional beauty therapy and decided to expand her knowledge by completing an Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science in Perth. Following this she spent 2 years working at a cosmetic clinic in Canberra but home soon called and after 7 years of study and work in the beauty industry, she was back in the Territory, motivated to start her own clinic. “It was through being away from Darwin that I found the laser I wanted to work with and the cosmeceutical skin care range. The concept of the business is to provide Territorians with a place to go where they can access cutting edge treatments and all staff members are fully qualified in their specialty area.” Territory Laser Clinic offers a range of services, each delivered by trained

professionals who are experts in their field. Dermal Therapist and IPL/Laser Safety Officer Holly, provides Dermal Therapies such as laser hair reduction, laser skin rejuvenation, chemical peels, and guidance and recommendations for the Aspect range of Cosmeceuticals. There is a trained medical professional – Cosmetic Physician Dr Ehsan Jadoon – performing the very latest in cosmetic medical and surgical procedures such as thread lifts, upper eyelid trim, scarless mole removal, liposculpture and injectables such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and PRP. Lyn O’Connor is a Permanent Makeup and Paramedical Tattoo Artist. Services available are lips, brows and eyeliner tattooing, scar camouflage, nipple areola repigmentation, tattoo correction and tattoo removal via a non-laser technique. There are many things Holly loves about her business, but the most important

benefit to her is the ability to control the level of expertise that is provided to her clients. “Clients like personalised service and I will always go the extra mile for people to make sure they are getting a highly professional treatment. THE HOUSE factory Alex had come from a background in engineering and over a decade’s worth of experience designing and drafting custom homes in the South West, and Kent had come from an extensive history in management and innovation delivery in the trucking, beef, wine and agricultural industries. Recognising there was an absence of simply designed ‘ecofficient’ housing that withstood the variable Australian climate, the duo came up with the ‘house in a box’ concept – an affordable, energy efficient house, delivered flat packed, that can be quickly erected, that challenged traditional building methods. Deciding to focus their activities in the North of Australia where housing is most needed, the pair backed themselves and their idea, loaded up “Betty” a 2004 ford falcon ute, and headed to Kununurra to build their first “ecofficient” home. Their drive and determination meant that success soon followed and fast forward 4 years, the House Factory now a leader in supplying innovative, contemporary, energy efficient housing solutions at an affordable price to customers across the 34

After 20 years in the industry, Jo Mufale has finally found her niche. Not only does it inspire a greater passion in her career personally but also she is providing a much needed service to Darwin families, and loving it. “We had been travelling around Australia with our 3 children and I really wanted to treat myself to a good haircut and a relaxing trip to a salon. It couldn’t have been more stressful! I’d never had to take my kids to the hairdresser before and for the first time I got a real sense of what my clients had been feeling”. Jo knew that taking time away to get to a salon was a rare event for many parents and the idea of a salon that catered for families started to form in her mind. Jo and her family relocated to Darwin from Melbourne and after researching her idea further, it started to make more and more sense. “I could see this was something I could do for families. There are a lot of defence families, fly in fly out staff and single parent families in Darwin so there was a market for this kind of a

service. These types of clients – that don’t always have the choice of two parents to share the load at all times - were my target market and as it turns out, they now make up the bulk of my clients.” Hair ‘n’ Play offers a comprehensive range of hair and beauty services in a relaxed and professional environment, with a complimentary, fully supervised indoor children’s play area, as well as all the equipment and facilities parents need while on the go. The salon is staffed by fully qualified stylists, colourists and beauty therapists and caters to mums dads AND their blessed offspring. The supervised play area is upstairs and can accommodate any age from newborns to teens, and of course is fully air conditioned. So while the kids are upstairs being entertained, mum or dad can get some well earned pampering or even just a much needed cut or treatment, and enjoy a good coffee, some delicious cake and actual adult conversation! DUNLOP

SUPER DEALER After starting out in sales with the Dunlop group in 1976, Kris worked his way up in the company and at 20 he became the youngest ever store manager. In 1990 he was approached by the Bob Jane Corporation to set up an Adelaide franchise, but 5 years later, the hard work and time away from his family took its toll so Kris and his wife Kerry-Ann packed up their two daughters Ann-Marie and Rebekah and headed North for a three year working holiday. Two decades later they are still here. After selling the Bob Jane franchise in South Australia, Kris then joined business ventures with Bridgestone Darwin and Tyrepower Darwin. Once it was clear they were in Darwin to stay, he decided to branch out on his own and opened Dunlop Super Dealer and Independant Battery Distributor (NT) selling of course – tyres, batteries and accessories. Dunlop Super Dealer was very proud to recently receive two important industry awards at the 2013 Dunlop Super Dealer conference in Singapore last month. Kris is quick to point out that these awards were definitely a team effort! The key to his 36

Career longevity seems to be a thing of the past these days, but Kris Leonardos has proven that dedication and hard work can pay off, and after almost 4 decades he is still as passionate as ever about his job.

team’s success is simple. “It’s getting ‘back to basics’. It’s all about the quality sales and service that keep the customer coming back and ensure our continued success.” He readily admits it would be impossible to achieve the results they have without it being a team effort. “It is a huge achievement for my staff.” The Dunlop Super Dealer Regional Award, S/A & NT, 2012 was presented to Kris and Kerry-Ann by Mr Doug Trenwith Southern & Eastern Divisional Sales Manager. The 2nd award was Dunlop Super Dealer, National Award Dealer, 2012 and this one was presented to Kris and Kerry–Ann by Mr Lou Mandanici, Sales Director, Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres. A great win out of a tough competition of 146 Dunlop Super Dealers across Australia. There are many benefits to being an owner operator, but one of the highlights for Kris is being able to give back to his community. He supports and contributes to many local community groups and organisations and has been working closely with Indigenous and government organisations to provide

training and jobs. His advice to young people just starting out in their career is simple. “I tell them to embrace every opportunity, and to find a good work/life balance. We took a gamble to open a business and have learnt that good old-fashioned service pays off. We try to always exceed our customer’s expectations and be one step ahead of the rest”.

What’s REALLY important

“Injecting energy into people and business”

Owning your own business is hard work. Even if your business is a dream fulfilled or you are living your passion, there are aspects of work that are not our strength and can draw on our energy, our positivity and even make us question whether it is all worth. Businesses move in cycles and those that are successful in business know how to use the peaks and troughs and particularly the plateaus to their benefit. For those of you who have been in business for over 3 years (some sooner), by now you would have experienced the Plateau. The time where your energy flatlines, where your financial growth has slowed and you have looked back questioning “Is it all worth it?”. I have written before about the 3 fundamental actions that need to be taken at this stage, Reflect (look back), Review (look deeply), Refocus (look forward). Without these 3 actions, the Plateau will continue and the downward cycle will start. For many business owners, the first indication they have hit a Plateau is usually when they

are exhausted or when they take their first breath after the initial start phase. Wouldn’t it be great to know from now on what is really important in business so you don’t have to do EVERYTHING? So with this months focus being on Owner Operators hover your phone with a QR Code reader over the QR Code and see what are the 12 things that really work when running a business on your own (it also applies to those who get to share the fun with others). Here is a high 5 to all of the Owner Operators out there! Keep moving and enjoy the ride.

ADOBE IDEAS My favourite app on my iPad is Adobe Ideas!

Dr Iain Waller is a Management Consultant who runs Nakara Consulting. He seeks out and uses a variety of apps on his iPad2. radicalinnovation.com.au

I use it every day in some way. It is my whiteboard for ideas. It is my mind mapping tool to work with clients and it is my doodle place where I draw models and processes first before I switch to other apps to make them pretty functional or useable in other devices. Adobe Ideas is my go to app for working things out. Why? With my finger I can draw pictures, processes, diagrams, logos and work with someone on unpacking a process or issue. I can email that work to them as a PDF and my iPad keeps a copy until I decide to delete it. So if you are a visual thinker like me or just need a place to

whiteboard ideas then this is the app for you. It's about $10 in the app store but I reckon I have got about 100 times worth that of functionality out of it and saved a lot of trees. To get a real world equivalent for your office starts at about $2000! And I can take mine anywhere with me. I can use pretty much any colour, change the size of my 'pen' strokes and I even have an eraser for when I want to make changes. Ideas is NOT a fully functioning illustrator (mostly because I can't draw) but it is a great way of doing lots of types of drawing thinking and analysing.

GENERAL

MANAGER comes full circle at the Entertainment Centre

Almost 30 years ago, Alan James took a job as a casual technician at the brand new Darwin Performing Arts Centre. It would change his life forever. From that small start in 1986, Alan moved in to supporting local bands and community arts programs, including taking visiting performers to remote communities. He became the manager of ground breaking band Yothu Yindi, touring all around the world. Last year, Alan was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame along with the band. Three decades on and Alan has come full circle back to where it began at the Entertainment Centre, this time as the General Manager. “I’ve always lived in Darwin and I’ve always been passionate about the arts,” he said. “And I’ve always been interested in making the Centre the best it can be.” Alan’s determination to reconnect the community with the Centre is palpable, including giving more local performers an outlet. “Way back in 1987, I was managing ‘Swamp Jockeys’ and we were the first Darwin band to hire the Entertainment Centre for a major gig,” said Alan.

“That was a huge opportunity for us and I want to re-engage with local artists to give them the same chance.” To that end, Alan’s opened up the Centre’s outdoor bar The Verandah every Friday afternoon with live performances from local musicians. He wants the Entertainment Centre to offer Darwin audiences a better crosssection of shows from the performing arts, including contemporary music, dance, theatre and music. “The Time of My Life concert in April again proved Darwin loves a great music act, comedy is always popular, and nights like the Burlesque Festival attract great crowds,” he said. “But I also want to offer Darwin more of the highest quality shows from around Australia, like the up-coming Australian Ballet performance in August.” As the General Manager, Alan’s passion for the arts doesn’t stop at the Box Office. “I want to build a strong schools program and more opportunities for younger children to experience the arts,” said Alan. “I want to make the Centre the hub of entertainment in our community.”

NAVIGATING SOCIAL

networks

Bronwyn Clee

info@bronwynclee.com Bronwyn Clee is a nerdy Nona who is nuts about navigating social networks and creative conflict resolution, empowering women and caring for community. Volunteering at Nightcliff UC Op Shop keeps her feet planted firmly on the ground even when the spirit of writing knocks her over and gives her wings to fly. Go to www. bronwynclee.com to find out more.

I was a bit brutal in my last column and make no apologies. I’ve been told often enough, that one of my signature strengths is shooting from the hip and speaking from the heart and my clients tell me they love it. Infact they expect me to keep it real and demonstrate honesty, integrity, persistence and commitment overlaid with strong leadership skills and the capacity to think outside the box. Regardless to whether I’m navigating social networks, designing new and economically empowering models of community development or helping people resolve conflict and tension, I just need to stick to my purpose built plan and keep it real. Napoleon Hill refers to having a “Definite Chief Aim” and says “…a good business owner impresses the customer with the fact that this is a personal service, and can be trusted.” All this does not ‘just happen’. There is a definite plan and also a definite purpose in doing it, and that purpose is to bring clients back and back.”

Navigating social networks is not rocket science – and yet like Napoleon Hills implies, there is a science to it. A couple of issues back I referred to my simple process: A.I.I.R. (Assess, Identify, Implement and Review) and encourage you to use this model when navigating your social networks. Understanding relationship management matters in the online world more so then ever. No matter how many ‘likers’, followers, circles or connections you have created online, without paying attention to the ‘how to’ of managing relationships very little will fundamentally change.

Your dream job is within reach; you need only decide what it is. What are your strengths? What do you find yourself doing most often at work AND enjoying? Are you the person everyone comes to in the office for the same thing – because you seem to have your head around it more than everyone else? It doesn’t take much to identify your skill set, you just need to step back and look from a different perspective. Sometimes a meeting with a recruitment specialist can help. They are the experts in identifying skills and personalities, and can often help you to discover things

about yourself you hadn’t previously recognised. But not all of us are looking for a complete career change. To find employment or change a career path will not only help you meet your financial and career goals, but will also reward your psyche, by stimulating your creativity and giving you that feeling of accomplishment that sometimes only the workplace and of course in the end, a pay check can provide. Financial independence is important to all of us so why not move from only dreaming to making it a reality – go on you are important so make a change today! A new look at finding the right staff As we enter another phase of significant growth, Northern Territory business people are wondering where they will get the staff they need to run their businesses —and the solution may be closer than they think.

It makes good business sense to engage local Indigenous people to meet emerging workforce demands, says Wendy Moulds, of ie.project. “Planning for a workforce while you’re flat out running your business is a real challenge! Employers are competing for staff in a very shallow candidate pool – but accessing and engaging local people creates longer term sustainability.” Let’s look at some of the statistics: • Indigenous people in the Northern Territory make up approximately 34% of the population. • The median age of the Territory’s Indigenous population is 23 years. • 43% of the Indigenous population of the Territory is aged under 19. • Currently 48% of Year 10 students are Indigenous and this is predicted to increase to 55% within 5 years. Employing Indigenous Territorians creates a workforce that is more reflective of the wider community it serves and is better able to understand and meet the needs of Territory clients. Many employers recognise the benefits of developing a local Indigenous workforce, including: • a longer term stable workforce as demand for workers increases • reduced costs in recruitment and training • accessing a new network of potential staff by being an ‘employer of choice’ • Meeting specific requirements to engage local Indigenous people on the major projects.

“This is where ie.project comes in,” says Jason Elsegood, one of the Directors. “Many employers tell us that they will employ anyone with the skills to do the job. Many also tell us that they would love to have more Indigenous staff but are simply not getting the applications. At ie.project we can help with both these scenarios. “Our current drive is on for our ‘60 Jobs’ program. We have well in excess of 100 candidates registered with us looking for a career opportunity. “We are interested in speaking to employers with Business Administration and Trade Apprenticeship opportunities for our upcoming programs. We are ‘pooling’ these job opportunities and then providing the training and upskilling to our pool of candidates to meet these requirements. We will work closely with you to develop strategies to meet the employment demands of your business.” If you are keen to see how you can access a local Indigenous labour pool, talk to local experts, Jason and Wendy at ie.project.

HOMECOMING FOR WESTPAC’S

NEW REGIONAL

General Manager Mungo O’Brien started his career as a part-time teller in the Darwin mall, dreaming of one day becoming a bank manager. Today he’s working in the same mall, but as the head of Westpac’s Retail operations in the Northern Territory. “After 12 years interstate, this is a real homecoming. I’m even living around the corner from where I grew up,” Mr O’Brien says. “Today Darwin is a real boom town with enormous opportunities for local businesses and residents and it’s great to play a role in helping drive that growth both here and elsewhere in the Territory.” Westpac’s new Regional General Manager of the Northern Territory was a bank manager in Tennant Creek before taking on larger branches in Victoria and most recently heading up Westpac’s largest regional bank in Queensland at Morayfield on the Sunshine Coast. He has moved to Darwin with his wife and three young children and is determined to ensure Westpac is number one in the Territory. “No other bank has the network of branches here that we do. We have remote branches such as Nhulunbuy, Jabiru and Tennant Creek, Katherine, Alice Springs and metro sites in Darwin,” he said. 52

July 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

“And we’re not just a transactional bank. We have brought back the bank manager, allowing people to build strong relationships with their bank.” Mr O’Brien said Westpac was a fundamental part of the local community giving to local groups, working with charities and other organisations. “The Northern Territory is going through an amazing period of change and I look forward to working with businesses, locals and community groups to strengthen our economy even more,” he said. Founded in 1817, Westpac is Australia's first bank and first company. The Westpac Group employs 36,000 people, serves 12 million customers and has a branch network stretching across Australia, including 50 branches in South Australia. As well as being one of the most efficient banks in the world, Westpac is a leader in global sustainability.

Rumi n at e

ON R EMUN E R AT I O N What to pay staff ? What to include in their package? These are big questions which too often employers don’t think about enough. Budgets are set in advance, new positions might be included however, a budget can’t foresee key personnel’s departures (for whatever reason). So whether a newly created role or when filling an existing position it’s important for employers to truly think about: • What salary rate/package will attract the best candidate for the position • Will I offer a salary range and be prepared to review the initial salary (& or benefits after a successful probation period or a set review period) There is a difference between wages and salaries. Wages are hourly rates whether for casual, part-time or fulltime employees; can be found very easily at the Fair Work website – www.fairwork.gov.au Salaries are for a set amount for work specified or position duties; full time or part-time. There is disparity in salaries in the market place across the board. With some well established organisations paying below market level for employees with little or no rewards, bonuses or incentives and other organisations (both large & small) paying premium salaries to retain staff with a view to maintaining the knowledge base of their organisation. Other companies are offering base salaries and premium bonuses – rewarding productivity and exceptional performance. It’s beneficial to establish prior to hiring: • What can the business afford? • How will this rate compare with existing staff packages? • What kind of range can I offer? • What will a potential employee see as a benefit or am I just offering tools of trade? • If I offer incentives: what will they be and how will I measure performance | results to determine if incentives are to be paid? You will have a rough idea of what the business can offer from a dollar perspective. It’s a good idea to also have a clear understanding of what the business can offer by way of benefits. Applicants are increasingly seeking jobs and organisations that offer: flexibility in working hours; 5-6 weeks leave; study &

training benefits; telephone/communication allowances; parking; and increasingly health benefits (eg gym memberships or private health care cover). The standard laptop and mobile phone are no longer seen as benefits, they are seen as tools of trade. So what you mightn’t be able to offer in dollars, you may be able to offer in other ways. It’s important to ensure that what you offer is in line with existing employees, but don’t forget that some employees may wish to have other benefits too! Candidates are increasingly focussing on ‘WIFM’, (what’s in it for me), when viewing their current and future employment options. ‘Lack of management support’ and ‘broken promises’ (vis a vis career pathing or reward programmes) are prime reasons given for employees seeking alternative employment. The lure of more money can be secondary reason. Candidates coming in to the NT from interstate have expectations that wages and salaries here should be higher. The expectation is that you are living further from any big city and without the conveniences of a big city therefore there should be some compensation, especially when food, services and accommodation can be far higher than they are used to. It is a vicious circle - businesses must keep wages down in order to survive to pay for ever increasing taxes, insurances etc. in order to employ people. Tax breaks and incentives would assist in this area, but until that day other ways of ‘win/win’ packaging must be considered.

Getting it Right employing staff If you have not followed due process with your staff you could be facing legal action from Fair Work Australia, many employers fear unfair dismissal however there is more than that, there is adverse action, harassment/bullying, pre meditated termination to name a few.

Many small to medium sized businesses evolve from a single operator and the biggest step they take is employing their first staff member, exciting and scary at the same time. So what should a small business with one or more staff members have in place to meet their legal obligations. Policies and Procedures to protect themselves and the employee ensure the job description is not a task list rather a document that outlines operation parameters and role responsibilities. Paying staff does not mean that you have the right to move them into different divisions if it suits you and not them, having them perform personal tasks that you should do yourself (such as picking up dry cleaning and doing dishes). Employing staff does not mean that you can eye ball them and tell them how much their behaviour is costing you on a daily basis, this can be interpreted as harassment/bullying. Yes it’s your money that you are paying out and your expectation is that you get value for money since you are paying them, much like buying a new car (which comes with a warranty and an employee comes with a probation period). Your legal obligations as an employee are not to be ignored and it is up to you to find

out what those obligations are. In today’s 21st Century workforce you, the employer must be careful of how you respond. As an example an employer who had a discussion with the employee that they would be leaving in three months, the employer then engaged a replacement for the position, who in fact wanted to start sooner than the discussed three months as verbally agreed with the other employee. When the employer told the existing employee they could leave earlier as they had a replacement, the employee said no they had not agreed to leave in three months that in fact they had decided to stay…the next question… “Are you terminating my employment?” Problem one is now also problem two as the employment contract for the new employee has been signed. Check out Darwin Life August Edition for the continued story and outcome.

Get Amonst It | DarwinLife

Charcoal Oven is an Asian inspired restaurant situated in a quiet corner across from the Cullen Bay wharf. Shaaron, Cassie, Stephen and I enjoyed casual and attentive service as we were seated next to the water on the wooden deck. Charcoal Oven’s friendly owner, Cathy treated us to an array of delicious fusion style tapas. You can pick a definite Chinese influence with some punchy Western flavours to tantalise the palate. The decking offers spectacular waterfront views and laidback elegance. Stephen enjoyed snapping away creating stylish food photography on his Nikon, and we had the privilege to nibble on an assortment of plates. Dumplings, fresh vegetables and delicate slices of pork were some of the favourites! Charcoal Oven is definitely the perfect place to unwind after work and enjoy cocktails. The flickering table lanterns set the mood and you instantly feel like you’re dining in an exotic destination. You’ll be quick to discover Cathy has compiled an extensive cocktail list, from the golden oldies to quirky tropical creations. We spent the evening sipping on a variety of delicious tipples selected by Cathy. After indulging in East-Meets-West food and enjoying the chilled out vibe, we wander inside for a whole different atmosphere. Calling all karaoke lovers! If you’re a fan of belting out renditions of ABBA and Whitney Houston, Charcoal Oven is championed as Darwin’s signature karaoke venue! Get a group together for dinner and relax on the plush lounges inside with a martini in hand while you serenade your friends. We all loved the flashing lights, which are sure to excite karaoke aficionados! It certainly created a fun atmosphere while we worked through the restaurant’s expansive cocktail list. Cathy and her staff ’s warm hospitality makes Charcoal Oven a versatile venue. The Darwin Life team loved this Get Amongst It experience! The Asian share plates, to the fun drinks list and the karaoke have you leaving this place on a fantastic high! (Dedicated, to the end, Cathy will even drive you to the City, if you can't find a cab!).

SUNDAY BREAKFAST AT

COVE I think I’ve unwittingly committed myself to reviewing every Eggs Benedict on offer in Darwin. This time I’m at Cove Restaurant at SkyCity Casino on a quiet early Sunday morning. Being a part of the new resort, everything is beautifully slick, modern and overlooking the gigantic lagoon pool making it the perfect place to chill on a cool morning. We order Eggs Benedict and the Cove Signature Breakfast which is just a fancy way of saying “lots of fried stuff ”. But first we start off with a double chocolate peanut butter muffin which is indeed as awesome as it sounds. Fresh from the oven, it’s still warm-ish and fluffy and oh so rich, but not too rich in that mud-cake kinda way. This thing should be classified as an illegal drug as one could seriously get hooked on it. The eggs benno are fantastic and the wife agrees. The freshly made hollandaise sauce is lemony, buttery and oh so smooth with the muffin – ham – egg – sauce ratio is spot on. This goes in my “top 3 of all Darwin time” basket. The Signature Breakfast is just fried stuff really so I can’t really provide too much deep philosophical ponderings about it. The scrambled eggs were good but perhaps could be injected with some more butter and the bacon could be grilled for longer to get that nice crispy caramelisation on the surface. There are weekend specials for breakfast that aren’t your typical fare; they come with names so fancy the waiter has to read the list from a bit of paper. Rest assured they’re as epic as they sound. So there you have it, a very pleasant breakfast experience at Cove SkyCity. Fancy location delivers fancy breakfast. #Winning.

ANTIQUITY IN NAME ONLY BY JACK STEPHANE

Poppy Ginis, chef and owner of Antiquity was inspired by her first cookbook at the age of 9. Antiquity is the culmination of several years of passion to create the perfect fusion of traditional Greek cuisine with the fresh produce of the Northern Territory. And what a superb combination of flavours and textures Poppy has created. The Mezze Plates ($12.50$19.50) include whitebait, octopus, char grilled quail, lamb ribs and local prawns. We chose Tyri Saganaki ($17.50) a generous portion of Kefelograviera cheese pan fried and served with fig and caramelised onions. A wonderful combination; salty, creamy Greek cheese, complimented perfectly by the sweetness of the fig and caramelised onions. A perfect entrée to share. We also sampled another favourite, Kalmari ($16.50) light, crispy, fried, tender morsels of baby calamari, served with a creamy lemon aioli. Delicious. The mains include local pawns, char grilled duck breast, Atlantic salmon, Riverina Angus eye fillet. Arni Kieftiko ($32.50) was our choice. Tender lamb pieces cooked with leeks, raisins, cumin

with layers of spinach and feta, wrapped in a filo parcel and cooked in the oven; served with crispy lemonades patates. An exciting dish bursting with textures and subtle, aromatic flavours, not to mention the superb lemonades patates. The Braised Lamb Open Moussaka ($29.50) is one of Poppy’s fantastic creations. It looks like a work of art and tastes just as good. All the layers of the traditional Moussaka are there; but stacked individually; so that you taste the subtle texture of each ingredient as you slice through this amazing dish, with a creamy homemade béchamel sauce as its base. You can’t help but smile as you eat this Moussaka. A winner! These mains were accompanied by a traditional Greek salad with an excellent creamy feta cheese. ($14.50) Desserts: Chios mastic pannacotta ($15.00) is another ‘must try’ when dining at Antiquity. A light, smooth pannacotta served with mastic infused rosewater syrup and poached fig in mavrodaphne. Silky smooth; sweet, an elixir of delight. A perfect ending to an amazing meal. Congratulations Poppy.

A lot of people come to me asking for Shellac, what they don’t realise is that Shellac is a brand of Gel Polish, and there are many labels out there. CND is the brains behind this amazing product that’s been on the market 3 to 4 years. But when someone makes a brilliant new discovery, others will follow so OPI, Artistic Colour Gloss and many other labels have come out with products that are just as great as Shellac. So why not give some of the other brands a try as they all have their own unique colours. I’ve been in the Beauty Industry for 27 years and I think this is the best thing that has happened to this industry. An appointment consists of a tidy up of your nails, including a shape and file. You can put your hands straight into your bag to retrieve your keys because your polish is completely dry, and chip proof, how great is that? No more sitting around waiting for polish to dry. Most manufacturers recommend that a wet manicure is not done before application of Gel as the moisturisers and oil will interfere with the Gel setting and may cause the product to lift. Gel polish should last 2 to 3 weeks depending on the product. If your nails have no free edge, they might not last as long. The best way to remove Gel polish is to go back to your Therapist. Here are a few top tips to make sure your eyes reflect the beautiful soul within. Eye Care • If you’re eyes look puffy, heavy or tired then don’t apply eyeliner in a thick line as this will emphasise it even more. • Avoid salty foods which can cause fluid retention and eye puffiness • Placing a cold black tea bag on each eye for approx 10 minutes can help reduce eye puffiness • A slice of raw potato can be placed under your eyes to help reduce dark circles • Cool cucumber slices can help reduce both eye puffiness and dark circles • To reduce eye swelling use a metal spoon, hold it under cold running water for a couple of minutes, then gently press it onto the skin around the eye. • Wash your face with cold water each morning to get rid of puffiness around your eyes Shades • If you have dark hair then choose darker eyeshadow colours such as

Common Myths & Misconceptions in Cosmetic Practice

There are many myths and misconceptions about cosmetic treatments which are quite misleading. One of the common things heard from prospective clients is ‘I want Botox injections to plump my lips.’ You see many people (particularly those who have never had a treatment before) confuse botulinum toxin (or Botox) with lip filler. Botox works by temporarily and reversibly paralysing the muscle thus smoothing out the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. So if Botox is injected into the lips all it would succeed in doing is paralysing the lips and impairing eating, drinking and other important lip functions. This having been said, experienced practitioners do sometimes use tiny amounts around the mouth as part of their lip rejuvenation procedure. The correct product to use for lip augmentation would be a dermal filler of the appropriate type. Similarly, another common misconception people have is that Botox is harmful because it is a toxin. While this is correct in theory, it has no relevance to cosmetic practice. This is because the amount of product required for cosmetic treatments is minute and thus perfectly safe to use both short and long term. In fact much larger doses are routinely used to treat medical disorders including toddlers with walking difficulties caused by muscle spasm. Additionally, another misapprehension is that cosmetic enhancements are always noticeable, when in fact the complete opposite is true. The key to good 66

July 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

cosmetic work is that no one should be able to tell that you’ve had anything done and why you look so good! The trout pout; frozen forehead and startled eyes are all so last century and examples of what not to do. To ensure the most natural looking results make sure you go to a highly experienced Doctor who uses only quality products and practices. You don’t notice the people who have had good cosmetic treatments. And for those of you thinking that cosmetic enhancements are just for celebrities and cashed up housewives then think again. Your best friend, your sister and even your husband are booking cosmetic treatments. There is no one ‘demographic’ for cosmetic procedures because everyone is unique and has different needs. Make no mistake clients are of all ages and backgrounds so there is no ‘stereotype client’. Naturopathy Keeping Up With the Changing World of Business Keeping in mind this month’s business theme, it seems like a good time to talk about how service related business and not just retail outlets can be adversely affected by our technology obsessed world. In an age of Dr Google, self diagnosis and buying products via the internet, naturopaths can be added to the list of businesses that find it hard to compete. So how can a business make changes? Finding a niche market and sometimes upgrading or changing your current skills is often the answer. In my case this involved studying to become a Formulating Chemist in the Personal Care Industry and using this skill to produce a niche in “skin health”. As the former licensee of Darwin’s Psoriasis & Skin Clinic I treated skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and fungal skin conditions. I learnt that individuality is the key and that one skin cream or supplement does not suit everybody. Some people will need a strong product, others a more gentle formulation to calm and clear their skin. A face to face service allows the practitioner to make an assessment of the internal triggers and this is something that can’t be achieved over the internet. This vitally important part of treatment often involves specific testing for things such as gut toxicity, food intolerances, abnormal

stress hormones, vitamins and mineral levels. Remember that small businesses have one advantage over big business; the ability to respond quickly to market changes. In the skin care industry for example, large businesses can take years to produce a new product. A small business can respond quickly to the latest research, formulate, test and bring a product to the market within 3 months. In my own business this means that I can have multiple products with different strengths of active ingredients that can be tailored especially to meet the needs of the client.

CHIROPRACTIC

chest pain

Marc Cova B.Sc. M.Chiro CAA (NT) President 5/5 Keith Lane Fannie Bay 08 89414033 About the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (National) Limited (CAA) is the peak body representing chiropractors. An underlying principle of chiropractic is “healthy spine, healthier life”. By offering expert, drugfree spinal health care and lifestyle advice, chiropractors help Australians lead and maintain healthy lives. With more than 2,700 members, the CAA is the largest chiropractic health body in Australia, and coordinates its efforts with its eight autonomous CAA state and territory organisations.

Chest pain and epigastric (just below the sternum) pain is a very common symptom that presents to Chiropractic clinics every day. Sometimes it may not be the patient’s main complaint but it may show up as their second or third complaint. Chest pain of noncardiac origin is commonly a referral from the thoracic spine (the mid back) or can be pain originating from the rib and sternal joints around the breast bone. As well as mimicking cardiac pain, this kind of pain can also mimic indigestion and reflux. Chest pain is common in people who spend a lot of time sitting, like office workers and drivers, in this instance chest pain comes on when the thoracic spine stiffens due to inactivity. Once stiff it is very easy to sprain and strain the thoracic spine or chest and from a patient’s history it’s normally reasonably easy to differentiate whether this pain is from a musculoskeletal or organic origin. A recent study in Denmark published in a well

In this months column I’d like to focus on a lesser acknowledged reason for why a patient would see a Chiropractor, that is chest pain.

know scientific journal compared the treatment of 115 people who presented to Chiropractic clinics and the local hospital emergency department with sudden chest pain1. The study compared Chiropractic care versus patient self care and found that after 4 weeks and 12 weeks, the patients that received Chiropractic care had a significant decrease in their pain and an increased level of functional ability. This study demonstrated that Chiropractic care can have a positive impact on chest pain over a short period of time. So if you been suffering from any chest pain that’s been proven to be non organic, see your local CAA NT Chiropractor, an adjustment to your spine may help to relieve your pain within a few weeks and help to get back to better function. 1. ALWAYS GO FOR THE This is a wise old saying that rings a lot of truth in group self-defense situations.

This month I want to talk about the psychology of this principle and why it is true in self-defense. In most group attacks there are generally some attackers that are more confident and others which are followers. Always going for the leader ensures that the direct and biggest threat in a self-defense situation is dealt with as a priority. If we take a moment to look at the nature of animals we can see some similarities between them and humans. Some animals are always in packs, and work towards a common goal of survival or hunting. In order for the pack to be successful there needs to be a clear leader. The leader of the pack makes the decisions and the pack is submissive to the leader, following them as a sign of their trust and respect. Ironically we can see similar traits in group attacks. Generally the pack waits for a leader to initiate the attack. If the leader attacks everyone will then follow their lead to remain loyal to their pack. A leaders attempt to attack

can be diffused by the following means: • Using humor • Leaving the situation before it escalates • Negotiating • Preemptive strikes • Confidence or aggression If the attacker is diffused appropriately the leader will become submissive and the pack will follow that lead. It’s always best in any self-defense situation to use prevention. Leave before things get out of control, or have the awareness and confidence to deal with the matter or the leader in this case before things get ugly. I always recommend enrolling in a self-defense program to learn to deal with these types of situations. Krav Maga is a modern day reality-based selfdefense system. GOT GLUTES?

In terms of athletic performance, it's hard to overlook the glutes as the main driving force to increase speed, enhance explosive movements and develop raw power.

Whilst the glutes are in fact the largest muscle in the body, they are more often than not left out in favour of Quad and Hamstring dominant exercises. Try the following lift to regain your glutes, and get rid of that junk in your trunk for good. The Hip Thrust Firstly you'll need to set up a bench, making sure it won't move once you begin. Place the barbell over your hips, using your hands to keep it in place. Have your feet firmly on the ground, push through your heels and raise the hips by squeezing your glutes, HARD. The Hip Thrust has been slowly gaining momentum and respect in recent times, largely thanks to it inventor, Brett Contreras. It's relatively easy to learn, and more risk free than its brother in arms, the Deadlift.

desired number of reps. If it's a better backside and a burn that'll have you off to RDH you're after, then the Hip Thrust is for you. Start with body weight, hitting 20 reps of multiple sets before you attempt using the barbell. Remember, slow and steady always wins the race. Stay Strong, Wes For more information on Hip Thrusts and other Glute exercises, Wes can be reached via email at northernkettlebells@live.com

At the top of the movement, your hips should be aligned with your shoulders, and your knees bent to 90 degrees. Focus on tucking your tail bone under, and keep your ribs down, just like your doing a plank. Sink your hips back down in a controlled manner, and repeat for the

INFLATABLE RESCUE BOAT (IRB)

Championships

500 competitors from 30 surf life saving clubs around Australia will go head to head at Mindil Beach on July 18 – 21 for the 2013 Australian Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Championships. The event will make surf life saving history as the first national surf life saving championship to be held in the NT. For local lifesavers the Interstate Championships on Thursday July 18 will be the first challenge. Then, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the NT crews will represent their own clubs – Darwin, Mindil Beach and Gove Peninsula, against the best from around the nation. The IRB Championship events are designed to improve the skills of lifesavers crewing IRBs on Australian beaches where hundreds of rescues are performed every year. Powered by 25hp outboard motors fitted with propeller guards the 3.8m IRBs are raced by a driver and crewperson. The objective of the race is to rescue a ‘patient’ or ‘patients’ from the water in the quickest possible time. It’s a fast,

action-packed event. Surf Life Saving NT’s President, Bob Creek, said local IRB racing teams had been training hard for over 18 months thanks to a Sports Development Pathway funded by the NT Government and Surf Life Saving Australia. He said it will be the first time female drivers will join their male counterparts representing the Territory at a national IRB championship.” “Many of our visiting club members have never been to Darwin but I’m confident our local lifesavers, all our friends and supporters, and the wonderful experience of the tropical dry season at world famous Mindil Beach, will make the 2013 Australian IRB Championships an event to remember.”

CAR OF THE MONTH

WHAT IS YOUR NAME? Chris Carlson VEHICLE COLOUR, BRAND AND YEAR? Red, Farmall F-12, 1937 and Green, John Deere Model B, 1942 WHAT WAS THE CONDITION OF THESE WHEN YOU FIRST PURCHASED THEM? The Farmall was a “barn find” and then used as a garden ornament at a property in Horsham, Victoria. It was in very poor condition when I purchased it and there wasn’t even a scrap of red paint left on the tractor! The John Deere had been imported

to Australia from the United States by an interstate collector. It was also in need of restoration. I came across both tractors on eBay. WHAT MODIFICATIONS HAVE YOU DONE? I haven’t modified either of the tractors. I fully rebuilt both tractors, restoring them to their original condition. ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THESE TRACTORS? The Farmall F-12 was the start of my vintage tractor/machinery/ engine collection. In the past 8 years I have collected numerous tractors, stationary engines and other farming

or earthmoving machinery all from years prior to 1950. My family and I have had a lot of laughs travelling around adding to my collection. And the neighbors must have a good laugh when they see me driving them around the yard occasionally. HAVE THEY WON ANY AWARDS? The Farmall won Tazzies Choice Award at the 2012 Shannons Motoring Extravaganza in Darwin WHAT DOES THE WIFE SAY ABOUT YOUR OTHER LOVE? My wife wishes she had an old Holden collection to match my tractor collection.

region

THE DOUGLAS DALY Located midway between Darwin and Katherine, just off the Stuart Highway, and an easy scenic drive from both destinations, the region is famous for its fishing, and also boasts hot springs, gorges, bushwalking and an abundance of wildlife. Known as the Douglas Daly after its two major river systems, the region has become a favourite spot for locals and travellers to spend time camping, fishing, bushwalking, and swimming. The Daly River is famous for its large barramundi and is one of the most popular waterways in the Top End for recreational fishing and boating. Cruising on a boat along the river lined with large trees - many of which have fallen into the river and now provide perfect snag habitats for barramundi - you will also see prolific wildlife, including a healthy population of both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. There are plenty of swimming holes in the Douglas Daly region. The rock pools at Butterfly Gorge provide a chance for a refreshing swim and are shaded by paperbarks up to 50 metres tall. Cool crevices in the rock face of this beautiful gorge provide shelter for thousands of common crow butterflies. The sheer rock faces, edged by dense vegetation and rocky spinifex country, offer shaded riverine walks and beautiful scenery. Early in the morning, or later in the evening when the sun cools, test out the hot spring waters at Douglas Hot Springs. Some springs can reach 60C, but head downstream for cooler pools. Visitors to the area should always be mindful that saltwater crocodiles inhabit the region. Look out for and observe crocodile warning signs. Other local sites of interest include Fenton Airfield which was used by the Australian and US troops during World War II. You will find interpretive signs, which will help you explore the ruins and the aircraft graveyard. The Jesuit Ruins more than 100 years old and situated near the Daly River Mango 76

Farm is also worth a visit. These ruins give an insight into the influence of the Jesuit missionaries in the region between 1886 and 1899. Nearby Merrepen Arts Centre in the community of Nauiyu is a modern, attractive centre that displays and sells Aboriginal art and crafts made by the local community. The Art Centre opened in 1986 and the artists are famous for their etchings, printmaking and the use of a multitude of materials and techniques in their creative expression. Using zinc or lino plates, coloured ink and a press machine they produce etchings and prints while batik techniques using wax and silk painting are used to produce t-shirts, scarves and sarongs. Bowls and animal figures are made from paper-mâché and the weaving of Merrepen and Pandanus leaves produces dilly bags, fishnets, baskets and sun mats. The Centre is open daily between 10.00am – 5.00pm, but it is always best to call first and let them know you are coming. A selection of accommodation is scattered close to the river. Choose from camping and caravan sites, budget accommodation and cabinstyle accommodation that is fully equipped and includes air-conditioning throughout. Most accommodation properties have swimming pool facilities. The region is a great place to spend some time relaxing and due to its close proximity to both Darwin and Katherine it is an ideal spot to base your Top End travel and visit the many unique Top End events throughout the dry season. To find out more about visiting the Douglas Daly Region or for information about events across the Top End, drop into the Visitor Information Centre at 6 Bennett St, Darwin City or call our friendly Consultants on 1300 138 886.

Every seachanger’s dream, the striking small community, founded by the Yunupingu family in the 1980s, has been in the process of establishing sustainable businesses and work opportunities. The annual East Arnhem Land Garma Festival is approaching, and timber processed by the Gumatj owned timber mill at the cleared site takes on a new life in the hands of skilled local residents in Gunyangarra (often known as Ski Beach), 10 km west of Nhulunbuy. Five years in the making, the workshop sits alongside a new plant nursery – that seeks to entice customers with the best coffee in the region- and opposite a brand new primary school. Seven wood workers, along with learning on-site Charles Darwin University staff, produce beds, tables, picnic benches, certificate

frames and chairs. Superviser, Rob Steendam, is happy to talk through commissioned pieces and an easily accessible display shop showcases well turned pieces of Cypress and other local timber. Visitors won’t just be stopping for the coffee next door. Cicada Lodge, the Top End’s newest luxury lodge is being touted as the most significant tourism development in the Northern Territory of recent times. Not only has it brought a whole new level of accommodation to the Katherine region, opening it to a wider share of the tourism market, but is stands as a shining success for regional and Indigenous tourism. The Lodge is uniquely located inside Nitmiluk National Park, home to the famous Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. This diverse and spectacular landscape is also a cultural landscape, where the Jawoyn people continue to live and work while sharing their culture with visitors to their country. It is this authenticity in the local cultural environment mixed with the natural wonders of the Gorge that keeps pulling domestic and international guests from around the world. Cicada Lodge is now uniquely positioned to add luxury in that mix. All 18 rooms of the Lodge beautifully appointed; are air conditioned and feature full length louvered doors to the private balconies, allowing guest the choice of opening their room to the sounds and sights of the native bush or closing them for the cool privacy of their room sanctuary. Each room features Indigenous artwork from local artists – the rich colours blending with and complimenting the more modern design and fittings. The ancient stories within the paintings weave

the modern with the traditional to create a unique blend that is Cicada Lodge. The Lodge also features works from another local Katherine artist. Local potter Danny Murphy been commissioned to develop a range of pieces that are used through the property. His magnificent large terra cotta pots and urns are created with incredible variation in colours, patterns and textures using local clay in the colouring process. Danny’s work is held in numerous private and corporate collections through Australia and overseas and is now a major feature throughout Cicada Lodge. “The Lodge has been open for 2 months now, and without doubt I can say that it has exceeded all our expectations and has brought a new level of accommodation, service and experience to the Top End. To date we have had a number of industry and media representatives through the property and without exception, the feedback has been fantastic which bodes well for the coming season ”, said property Marketing Director Mr Clive Pollack.

OLD MOBILES

Australians who moved house over the last five years moved an estimated 5.7 million old mobiles1 with them according to O’Donoghues First National Real Estate.

A new report2 commissioned by MobileMuster on moving home habits, has found Australians keep taking their old mobiles, batteries and chargers with them each time they move, rather than recycling them. “The number of old mobiles Australians are moving with them each year is astounding. Six out of ten people say they took the old mobiles, chargers, and batteries lying around their homes with them the last time they moved” O’Donoghues First National Real Estate Principal, Jeremy O’Donoghue said. “Across Australia this includes at least 65 tonnes of plastics and 48 tonnes of copper3 in mobile phones that could be reused, not to mention the steel, precious metals and other elements found in mobiles and chargers that are fully recyclable ” Jeremy said. Recently released, the report into Australians’ attitudes to moving house, also found that: • Old mobiles, chargers and batteries were one of the top three items (35%) not being used or needed anymore that Australians moved with them; 80

July 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

• The other top three items were old files, bills and paperwork (59%) and clothing (49%); • Nearly a third of (29%) Aussies said their biggest concerns about moving were: • Cleaning and packing-up • Moving with items that are not needed or used anymore • Getting rid of unwanted items. As to why people are moving items they no longer use, nearly a quarter (21%) said they thought it was easier to move with these items than get rid of them. Alarmingly one out of ten (13%) Aussies that said they would throw away their old electronic items and over a third (36%) of these respondents said they would throw these items into their bin. “Australians love their technology, but they seem very reluctant, or don’t know how easy it is, to recycle their unused mobiles safely and securely by dropping them at our office, rather than moving them from house to house cluttering up their lives.” O’Donoghues First National Real Estate is calling on all those people

who have just moved, or are planning to move, to help keep old mobiles out of landfill by dropping their old mobiles and accessories into our office at 141 Mitchell St Larrakeyah for recycling with MobileMuster, rather than moving with them, or worse still throwing them in the bin.

RE N OVAT I N G Part 1.

What are some of your tips when it comes to renovating on a budget?

With home renovations, the secret of success lies in careful planning based on a solid understanding of what you want to achieve. This includes having a clear focus on what must be included in your project as well as any other features you would like to include if your budget allows. Take the time you need to explore the possibilities for your home and develop a firm plan. Begin with the fundamentals –how do you want your ‘new’ home to look, feel and work for you and your family. Set a realistic budget – and stick to it -probably the other most important thing. Decide how much money you want to spend, which allows you (and your builder if you are using one) to focus on the work that is achievable within that budget. If you need finance, sit down with your lender and discuss the amount you can reasonably afford and the most suitable financing options. Remember that your budget should aim to cover everything that may arise from the renovation, including such items as new curtains, blinds, furniture and appliances. And don’t forget to add a contingency in for unforseen costs or changes to the plan – 10% of the total cost is a good number to start with. Always plan for the long term; thinking ahead avoids short-term renovations that may need to be redone in the future. Finally, don’t jeopardise the quality of your renovation by compromising on the quality of products or materials. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well, and that means using products that offer the right combination of performance, durability and aesthetics. Next month, we will look at some of the most economical and simplest DIY ways to renovate your home, so look out for part 2.

Prints are as on trend as ever around the world so while the rest of Australia is chilly and grey here we have clear skies and the sun shining – The ideal weather to be showcasing the latest in bright coloured prints for the home. My pick of the 3 hottest print styles this dry are MOROCCAN, IKAT & INDIGENOUS. Here with 3 ways to introduce some pattern to your home. Furniture - Seating covers, ottomans, cushions, bedspreads or bed heads. Walls – Prints framed behind glass, fabric stretched over canvas or rugs simply hung on the wall Dining table decor - Tablecloths, placemats, dinnerware, glasses or napery If using a combination of patterns, it is important to limit your colour scheme to just 2 or 3 colours or a maximum 5 shades of the same colour. A continuity of colour will ensure the outcome looks resolved and polished rather than mismatched or dishevelled. A more subtle alternative to bright “in your face” conspicuous patterns that tend to dominate a room is to add small patterned elements to spice up the larger plain pieces, This is a safe option if you trying bold patterns for the first time and is an easy way to blend patterns together if grouped in the same colours.

Natural

Ventilation

to Help Keep Your Cool

Bifold doors/windows are gaining in popularity which can greatly suit Darwin’s outdoor entertaining lifestyle, while ensuring plenty of free natural ventilation. However, depending upon where the bifolds are situated, once dusk falls, the flies, midges, moths, and mosquitoes can have an unwelcome free reign into your living space. Retractable insect screens can remedy this. A small bank of screened louvres within any rooms containing bifolds ensures a good exchange of fresh air when the bifolds are closed due to weather or at night. Otherwise, bifolds which actually have louvres incorporated into them could be the ultimate win-win with design and practicality in some situations. Louvre windows can allow natural ventilation through twice as much of a window area capturing fresh air as effectively as possible. This passive cooling approach reduces the reliance on artificial air-conditioning systems, which thereby lowers energy costs and minimizes the release of emissions into the environment. Usually louvres are cyclone rated to provide a tight seal to withstand bad weather. Options can include toned glass, aluminum, and timber blades to help control solar heat gain. Also clear glass with a low e coating can help improve the insulating properties of the window. The Green Building Council of Australia has specific guidelines for effective natural ventilation which contribute towards a building’s Green Star accreditation. These recommendations can be helpful when designing or looking to lease or buy a property, particularly in a higher density building. A continuous breeze path between two ventilation openings either within the

room or from one room to another. All internal doors that form part of the breeze path are provided with door catches to prevent the doors from being blown shut. Doors that are required to be closed to maintain fire separation or that provide entry to a dwelling from a public space are fitted with a security screen door that maintains security to the dwelling while the door to the common area is left open. Where fire doors are held open, the catch holding the door automatically releases the door and also automatically closes if the fire alarm system is activated. FINE FOOD

friends FOR OUR FEATHERED

Good nutrition is the single most important factor in determining the health, vitality and longevity of pet birds. Having been taken from their natural environment and unable to choose their own foods, it is imperative we provide them with a nutritionally complete diet.. No matter what we do for our pet bird, the inside of the bird cage can never even come close to a pet bird’s natural environment. Their manufactured food can also often be a far cry from resembling anything our birds are accustomed to eating in the wild. There isn’t a commercial food product or nutritional supplement available that can provide our birds with the outstanding goodness that is to be found in Mother Nature’s garden. Eating foods, which are naturally produced, can offer our birds the ultimate opportunity to achieve vibrant and long – lasting health. Pet Grass has many advantages along with being a healthy and tasty treat for your pet, like salad to humans and contains many elements that keep your bird healthy and happy. The deep green juice is abundant with Vitamins and Minerals and also contains, essential amino acids, and other fundamental nutrients which can help anaemia, improve blood circulation, and help regenerate the liver, as well as keep your birds feathers healthy and lustrous. It benefits the entire body by improving the supply of oxygen to the circulatory 86

July 2013 | DarwinLife Magazine

system. Besides chlorophyll, Pet Grass also contains essential enzymes that aid in the digestion of food, and are essential in the chemical processes that turn food into energy. Enzymes are only available from live foods. Pet Grass is also high in choline, magnesium, and potassium, which work together to repair damage caused by diets high in fat. It also offers extra fibre to your birds diet which may be helpful if its digestion is upset. While humans must use a special press to extract the juice from their food, birds have a built in juice extractor, their beaks. They squeeze the delicious, nutritious juice from each blade then discard the indigestible portion. If Pet Grass in new to your bird, I recommend introducing a small amount at first, to allow the bird to acclimate to the change in diet. Pet Grass is high in iron so you also don’t want to overload your birds diet with it. Three to four times a week is sufficient, and just a small amount is enough each time. Be sure to remove the label before placing Pet Grass in your birds cage. They love to chew on the tag, and some will even chew on the container. You

may want to remove the grass from the container if this is a problem, or clip a small amount of grass to the side of the cage. Pet grass can also be chopped up and added to their food. When you try pet grass you should notice

an immediate improvement in your birds happiness and health. The best idea is to have 2 pet grass plants, one to recuperate while the other is in the cage……. Spoil your pets, Until next time……………
