We had plenty of stalls showcasing the best of everything related to Territory’s lifestyle and homes, lots of activities and entertainment … and gee, wasn’t Peppa Pig and Kyal & Kara a hit. The kids loved Peppa Pig, she was swamped by her adoring fans. Kyal & Kara certainly entertained the crowds with demonstrations of their handiwork. We hope you had a great Easter and May Day. We want to thank all our exhibitors and sponsors for supporting this annual event. We look forward to seeing you next year! Blair Martin

THE WRIGHT WAY WI T H MA TT WRIGH T’S ULTIM ATE OUTBA CK TOUR

Matt Wright has spent his life in the great outdoors drawn to creatures most of us would run from. Fascinated by the Saltwater Crocodile, Matt resides in the Northern Territory where he continues to collect crocodile eggs and relocate problem ‘Salties’. Matt’s unique skills as a helicopter pilot, animal conservationist and wild animal relocation expert can be seen in his television series on Nat Geo Wild, ‘Outback Wrangler’. As a chopper pilot, Matt has been able to access areas that would otherwise be impossible to reach. He now unlocks some of these once hidden treasures for all to see with his Adventure Tourism Company, Outback Floatplane Adventures. Suitable for everyone, ‘The Ultimate Tour’ is an exciting half day adventure. It offers a spectacular floatplane landing on Sweets Lagoon (the famed lagoon where ‘Sweetheart’ the Monster Crocodile was caught in the 70’s), an exhilarating airboat ride through rainforest channels and wetlands, a helicopter flight over the floodplains of Litchfield National Park, an off-road buggy transfer beneath the rainforest canopy, a cooked breakfast/lunch billabong cruise and even a swim in a ‘croc-safe’ pool!

The Dry Season is upon us, which usually means weddings, weddings and more weddings in the Territory. And anything goes in the Territory, and getting married is no different. Nola Sweetman has been a celebrant for 24 years in the Territory and has united couples in a range of venues.

O

ne of the most unique ones was when an Alice Springs couple got married on the bank of the Victoria River way downstream from Timber Creek. On the boat to the ceremony the guests stopped to take photos of a five metre croc sunning himself. “The bride and attendants came racing along in a speedboat, stopping short of the landing to fix the bride’s hair behind some trees down,” Nola said. “We were all on high alert, and had a guest on ‘croc watch’.” “It was so uniquely Territorian, very beautiful, very unusual,” she said. “They had a gourmet breakfast and drinks chilling in eskis.” Nola related another wedding. “I’ve done so many weddings over the years from the very intimate to ones over 450 guests,” she said. “I always feel so

privileged and honoured to be part of their special day.” “Another wedding I was part of at the top of the Katherine Gorge,” Nola said. “We went up in two helicopters – it was just the two witnesses, bride and the groom, the pilots, and myself.” “One of my most recent wedding was held at Mataranka Homestead,” she said. “All the men were in thongs and had ‘growth’ on their faces. The bride arrived in a helicopter. It was in the spirit of the movie ‘We of the Never Never’.” Nola said she also married three sisters at one ceremony in Pine Creek. “Not to brothers! But yes they all got married at the same ceremony, so I guess it was a triple hit! Or trifecta.” When asked if she saw a trend in the Territory weddings over the years, Nola said not really. “All the weddings have simply been special,” she said.

“I’ve held weddings all over the Territory from harbor side restaurants to the middle of nowhere. They are all so special. Everybody wants their dream wedding, and the bride wants it to be perfect.” Planning a wedding has the reputation of being stressful but there are people in the Territory on hand to help. We’ve spoken to the experts within their field who can help you take the stress out of planning your special day. Most experts advise to book things at least six months ahead particularly if it’s during the Dry Season, when it’s most popular to get married thanks to the balmy weather. So whether you want a magnificent gown, a unique cake, the finest lingerie and shoes to a splendid venue, flick through the next few pages and find out who you should use for your upcoming nuptials. With over 20 years in the business The Big Day’s owner Sarina Cowcher has helped many blushing brides shine on their special day. From the 80s big puffy sleeves, high collars, heavily beaded dresses to the more refined and modern styles Sarina has seen the gaudy to the stunning over the years.

“Vintage is back,” she said. “Everyone loves vintage. We are getting many women wanting their dress to be related to an era or similar to their nans. Vamping up an old dress, we call them ‘heritage gowns’, has also become quite popular.” But if you simply want a new, stylish and stunning gown you need go no further than The Big Day, which opened it’s black embossed doors in Wulagi over eight years ago. Inside, the lights are dimmed, a big gilded mirror takes centerpiece, and then there’s hundreds of beautiful dresses to suit any bride-to-be. It’s a little girl’s paradise! “We only stock the best – our leading brands are Pronovias (Barcelona), Stella York, which is a very popular Australian design, UK label Ronald Joyce and USA label Mori Lee,” she said. “They are beautiful design and cut, the fit is immaculate.” “It’s quite common for brides to come in with pictures of what they want or a preconceived design, which is good for us as it gives us an idea of the woman’s style. But mostly, what they come in for is quite different to what they wear on the day.” “It is really true – the bride doesn’t pick the dress, the dress picks the bride! It’s that x-factor, you just stop and go wow! And funnily enough, it is often the first dress they try on that they go back to.” So you’ve just said ‘yes’, excitedly told your family and friends … now it’s onto the planning for the big day. Sarina advises coming in at least nine to 12 months prior. “They can make a personal appointment, we usually allow an hour and a half, to try on the different dresses. But we advise to start early as it can take up to six months for orders to come in and you usually need to allow about six weeks for fittings,” she said. “We want to get it just right. From our perspective it’s a big responsibility as it has to be perfect, it’s their day, but I love it as it is a thrilling feeling seeing a happy and glowing bride.”

Floristry runs in Danielle Simshauser’s blood, she’s been doing it since she was nine years old. So if you want to know about flowers for your wedding, then having a chat to Danielle should definitely be on your ‘to do’ list. Whether it’s bouquets, posies and corsages for bridal parties or intricate decorations for the reception, Coolalinga Florist is the place to go. “When I was a kid all I wanted to do was be outside with dad under the car, but mum was a florist and kept on getting us to help her,” Danielle said. “Mum is still a florist, she works for me, and my sister is one too. So it is in my blood, I can’t get away from it. I love the business and seeing happy customers.” Danielle has owned the popular boutique-style Coolalinga Florist on Stuart Highway for the past six years. “Without a doubt, other than Valentine’s Day, the Dry Season is the busiest time of year for us,” she said. “There are some weddings during the Wet, but we are usually booked solid for the Dry.” So what are the most popular flowers for our Darwin brides-to-be? “Not so much Roses this year,” she said. “Birds of Paradise and Peonies

are really popular this year. Also, Carnations and Chrysthaneums are making a comeback, they aren’t considered too old-fashioned anymore.” Danielle advises the customer to talk to them at least six months prior to the Big Day. “It just makes it less stressful for everyone, and gives us time if we need to change things or to order stock from overseas if necessary,” she said. “We never turn anyone away, but with more time we can make sure its perfect.” The floristry usually doesn’t do trials, but will if the customer wants or if it’s an intricate order. “We have one customer coming up that wants large entwined ball of red roses to be perched on top of crystal vases at the reception,” she said. “Our customer is a friend and very particular so we are definitely going to do a trial run, I’m quite looking

forward to that one.” Danielle said her main aim is to work for people’s budget and be rewarded with a smile. “I love seeing my customers happy. We want to make it as stress free as possible. Seeing them smile is often what keeps me coming back, it’s very rewarding and I love that.”

ake CAKES NT

“If I say I can do it, I can do it,” says Gayle McQuinn, owner of Cakes NT. And she’s not wrong having been the mastermind of some of the most jaw-dropping wedding cakes in Darwin. Gayle described one cake that turned heads at a wedding last year. “It was a four tiered wedding cake with an aquarium with a live Siamese fighting fish between each tier of cake,” she said. “Perched on top of the cake was the groom dangling a fishing rod hooked with a ring down to the bride standing below.” “It was a complex cake to make as I needed to ensure the base was solid enough to support the three aquariums and the cake, and also so the fish could breathe,” she said. “That cake still gets talked about to this day, and everyone stopped and did a double take when they saw the fish were alive!” By far Gayle is the best in the business in Darwin, and can decorate cakes from the simple to the ornate and unique. She was the decorator behind an elaborate cake that was about six foot high at a Darwin society wedding a few years back. “The bride wanted it to have ‘bling’ – it had cylinders 24

DarwinLife Magazine

with flashing fairy lights and Swarovski diamantes and crystals,” she said. “It was crazy and we needed a ladder to reach the top. I don’t think I slept for two days making sure that cake was perfect for the bride.” Gayle started making and decorating cakes from when she was very young. “I used to help my nana on the weekends,” she said. “And, when I was a teenager mum gave me a cake decorating book. I then joined a cake decorating association and my love for decorating began and the rest is history. There was one particular lady at the association, Norma Mund, who lived nearby and she taught me how to do it. She became a very good friend and gave me my first real order – a round cake with blue icing with a spray of flowers and some piping.” Despite the elaborate cakes Gayle has made, she said most couples still prefer a very traditional cake. “The most common

is the three tiered, white icing wedding cake with minimal piping and decorations,” she said. “I’ve noticed that my special chocolate cake is quite popular and there are more and more requests for cupcake weddings.” So no matter what style of cake you want for your wedding, Gayle is the one to go to because as she said ‘I like a challenge and no challenge is too great’.

C reative J ewellers A wedding band is a symbol of commitment and the start to a new exciting chapter in one’s life. So picking the right wedding band is important, for the groom and the bride.

Creative Jewellers are there to help. Historically, many young couples could not afford a wedding ring so they had to borrow or even rent one for the ceremony. This is not the case now, with Creative Jewellers offering, traditional, modern, diamond set and custom-made rings to suit every budget and taste. Creative Jewellers is an old-fashioned fullservice jewellery store, and for over 25 years has built a reputation for beautiful quality jewellery and custom-made pieces along with excellent customer service. Simon said ladies were generally easier to please when it comes to the wedding band. “We create a ring to complement her engagement ring, taking into consideration the profile, width and stone types to give a perfect marriage between both rings.” Men, on the other hand, are a little harder.

“They take a little more time before deciding whether it should be simple and traditional or something more modern in design and pattern. Some grooms even like it set with a diamond or other precious gems. Most men though are very traditional and like to keep it simple.” Simon said it is a special feeling to be part of someone’s special day. “The wedding band is a sign of commitment and taking that next step from the engagement to starting a new life and family,” he said. “We feel honoured to be part of their journey. Many couples have allowed us to be a part of it from the first gift when dating, the engagement ring symbolising their overwhelming love, the wedding band committing them, the eternity ring celebrating the birth of their first child, and anniversary gifts to commemorating each

year.” Simon said the advantage of picking the ring with Creative Jewellers is it’s more personal and with their years of knowledge and experience the customer is given excellent choice and service. “Creative Jewellers stock Australia’s leading wedding ring brands such as DORA, Worth & Douglas and Peter W Beck among others,” he said. “We have one of the largest sample ranges in the Territory for customers to have a physical selection. We can then manufacture to finger sizes in the metal they prefer from titanium to platinum. Along with our onsite workshop we can accommodate each individual’s taste and budget making each ring unique and special.” So from engagement to commitment and eternity remember Creative Jewellers.

Many women overlook the importance that their bridal lingerie can have on their figure and overall appearance on the day. It’s often left to the last minute, but it shouldn’t, as it is an important part of the bride’s outfit. “Beautiful and well-fitted lingerie not only makes you feel fabulous, it gives you a wonderful silhouette and shows off your wedding dress,” Sarah Lyn Lingerie & Fashion Boutique owner Vivienne Lee said. “At Sarah Lyn, brides-to-be have a wide range of lingerie and accessories to select from and are treated like princesses,” she said. “We stock the finest brands such as Simone Perele and our highly trained staff have an abundance of experience in helping women look fabulous.”

Vivienne advises the bridesto-be to leave themselves time and to think about the practical aspects of the lingerie required. “Remember you want your lingerie to help sculpt your figure as well as bring comfort, support and confidence for your special day.”

Darwin in building a world-class business park for the Northern Territory’s Corporate Park is where many are capital. General Manager Charles Burkitt said previously Darwin was not considered large heading thanks to its world enough for this kind of development. “However, that has changed dramatically over the class facilities and years. Darwin is fast becoming an economic leader and business destination with industries prime location. such as oil and gas, mining, tourism, Defence and agriculture booming,” he said. “Many businesses and organisations are now wanting to set up offices in Darwin due to its proximity to the Asian economic powerhouses. Once completed this will be the perfect facility for businesses ranging from small local ones to the larger multinational organisations and Government organisations.” ith the national focus on developing Australia’s north

“It’s only seven kilometres to the East Arm Port and the Darwin Marine Supply Base, 4.5 kilometres to the Darwin and International airports, and nine kilometres to the city centre,” Charles said. “Berrimah, where it’s located, is now the heart of greater Darwin. If you are based at the Darwin Corporate Park, you are in close proximity to many of your client or customer base and it’s easy for them to come to you.” Leasing rates for the Darwin Corporate Park are also very competitive. “You are getting a brand new A-grade commercial office space for a very reasonable price,” Charles continued. Rates are $350 per square metre plus outgoings per annum. Tenancies range from 100 to 3500 square metres, and the development will be of exceptional quality and finish. Also, secure basement parking is not an additional cost, it is part of your lease.” Work is underway on the first stage of the $85 million development, with its completion on target for late 2014. It will be a campus style layout landscaped throughout with shaded trees and covered walkways interconnecting the park. The two and half hectare block will boast eight three level buildings, flexible and

state of the art floor space, ample parking, landscaped grounds and a range of quality facilities and amenities such as storage, a gymnasium, end of trip facilities and a fully catered café/restaurant. Charles said they envisage the park will have a business-to-business, community atmosphere and that it will become a thriving hub. “Due to its size and the quality of the development, Darwin Corporate Park will eventually become a landmark in its own right and will be the place to do business,” he said. “This is a unique development for Darwin and there has been nothing like this before, but now with the city being the star of northern Australia – it is definitely the right time.”

Arts & Entertainment | DarwinLife

, in its 26th year, the the Glenti is a fun and vibrant festival where the Darwin Greek community share their culture, food, wine, dance and music with locals and visitors. This will be the 25th year that it has been held at the Bicentennial Park. Even in the beginning it was a great success. It was first held at the Greek School in Nightcliff with approximately 5000 attending. Now thousands and thousands attend and it has become an iconic event for Darwin. It’s a testament of how much the event has grown, from 100 kilograms of octopus at the first event, to more than three tonne of octopus over the weekend. The Glenti festival - which in Greek means ‘party’ - is run annually by Greek community groups and is famous for its winning souvlakis, yiros, octopus, lamb, Greek sweets and, of course, endless ouzo and wine. The event aims

to share what the Greek culture and lifestyle is all about with the wider population, while creating a family friendly weekend for all. There will be children’s entertainment, Greek bands and the comediennes Zorba Brothers will be on hand for a few laughs. There will also be cooking demonstrations from a well-known Greek chef from Adelaide. Each year the organisers of the Glenti raise funds for a nominated charity. Last year they raised approximately $100,000 for Give Me 5 For Kids in pledges over the two days. Give Me 5 For Kids is a fundraising initiative dedicated to raising much-needed funds for local community hospitals. This year the charity they have nominated is the Blind Dog Association, in support of children with eyesight and hearing impairment. All donations received will stay local and go directly to the charity. The Glenti is a non-profit ethnic event. It is organised by the Greek Community of NA, it invites all Greek associated clubs to participate and raise much-needed funds for their clubs.

S ecret W omens B usiness In 2010 Ellashaye D’More realised that the vintage art of burlesque needed to be brought to Darwin, one way or the other! To compete in the national competition, Miss Burlesque Australia, she had to travel to Queensland as there was and still isn’t any state competition in the Northern Territory (she successfully won the state title that year). So the seed was planted that this seductive form of entertainment from the golden era of Hollywood needed a home in Darwin and she was just the lady to do it. With stage experience in Darwin, Queensland, Sydney and Melbourne the chance to bring her beloved burlesque to the Darwin arts community finally arrived after the birth of her first son Maximus. Ellashaye began to teach the ‘Art of the Tease’ to handful of students at the community centre and teach budding performers in private classes. She created ‘Ellashaye’s Secret Women’s Business’ providing classes and intensive courses to both performers and non- performers alike, “You don’t need to be on the stage to enjoy this form of movement and self expression.” Says Ellashaye, “it’s about finding confidence in yourself and how you move”, and this ideal seems to resonate with

the ladies of Darwin as casual classes have grown. Casual classes cost $20. Ellashaye also teaches Dream Physique private lessons for women competing in bikini fitness and figure body building competitions. Ellashaye says they are quite popular, “We show them how to pose and walk in high heels with grace and poise.” Ellashaye is quite excited that the Australian Burlesque Festival is holding master classes at Ellashaye’s Secret Women’s Business on the 15 and 16 June. “There will be international and national performers giving lessons which is really exciting.” “I’m proud to say that I also own the rights to Dr Sketchy’s from the UK and USA - life drawing of burlesque performers which will be held once a month and Valancy Jayne teaches the amazing ‘The Great Gatsby’ style of solo charlston at the centre,” Ellashaye said. “We also have vintage make up and hairstyling course with Miss Chrissy (Founder of the internationally renowned Lindy Charm School) that is returning in August and we have our courses starting on the 28 and 29 April.” Ellashaye is happy that her dream of sharing ‘the art of tease’ and bringing a splash of vintage glamour to Darwin is bearing fruit.

Our casual classes are all $20 We have: • Burlesque bunnies: 6.30 Thursday nights | 4.00 Sunday afternoon • Smoulder and burn lap dancing: Thursday 7.30 • Charleston solo casual class: Sunday 5.00 • Charleston and Burlesque courses starting as of the 28th & 29th April $300 • 12 week performance course: Burlesque begginers, intermediate and advanced • Charlston solo course beginners and intermediate. • Dream physiques private lessons for women competing in bikin- fitness and figure body-building competitions - Learn how to pose and walk in high heels with grace, poise and in routines. • Hens nights, birthday parties, ladies days and baby showers where you can choose; Charlston, lap dancing or burlesque. • Australian burlesque festival will be holding their master classes at Ellashayes secret womens business 15th and 16th of June with interstate and international performers. • August - Miss Chrissy (Founder of the internationally known Lindy Charm School) will be returning to hold another weekend of vintage hairstyling, vintage make up and etiquette.

In this edition let’s see how we can help you to choose a laptop. Here are few things you may wish to consider. While Laptops are being around for over 15 years, there are cases where people still find it hard to select the right laptop. Inspite of all the features of choices mentioned below there is nothing if you can’t use that well, while it is not mentioned in the list, to us we feel that the ability to use it fully will be worth what we paid for, for which a well understanding of computer will be helpful, for less knowledgeable kids/friends/colleagues help, or computer clubs or even an handy IT experts where you can talk and get the best advice 1. The key factor to me in looking for a laptop is the operating system.

will help in faster processing. Similarly, if you have to work with graphics and games, then graphic card specification is also important. 4. Then comes the thickness of the Laptop

Do I want a MAC or Windows or now recent Android or alternate OS? It depends on the previous usage and comfort and the applications you wish to use. If you are not sure, go for Windows based as you would get more support. Recent Macs can be configured for dual boot. Android solution t will get more popular in the future. 2. The second critical thing is the screen size.

It is common sense to think that the more features it has more size it would have. But better to double check the specifications. Some time it is thin and has a very long battery life by using a cut down version of processor and low memory, but it could be slower as well. 5. Then storage size and speed

There are computers coming from 11.6’ to anywhere close to 18’ plus tablets and AIOS. It is ideal to go to a store and have a feel as smaller size screens can cause more fatigue. 3. Then comes the brain, processing power and graphics The current generation of Intel processors are i3, i5, i7 and there are alter natives from AMD and atom processor. The speed and the buffer of the processor

Solid state drives (SSDs) are significantly faster, smaller, quieter and use less energy than HDDs, with no moving parts, and so are more likely to survive a drop. But SSD is available only with the capacity of about 256 and is about four times more expensive than the traditional hard drives. 6. Other parts like Memory, DVD, Wireless :These parts are more or less standard .Such as 4GB Memory, DVD Drive and Wireless are common. More is better is the simplest guideline here.

7. Hard to port!

Make sure that you have enough ports on your laptop —look for minimum two USB ports- more is better. Also USB3.0 is faster than USB.2.0. Connecting a monitor/ projector/TV will, these days, involve an HDMI or mini Display Port output. There’s also Thunderbolt to consider. You may have to check legacy ports as well, depending equipment you have, it can be from FireWire (IEEE 1394), serial, VGA, DVI, Parallel . 8. Battery Capacity:- Two specs to look for in laptop batteries include capacity (measured in milliamp hours, or mAh) and the number of cells. Some laptops don’t have easily-swappable batteries. So you may need to take your laptop in for a service. 9. Other features and Warranty If the laptop is dustproof and keyboard is waterproof, it can save chances of it getting wet and voiding the warranty. Keep an eye open for longer than usual warranties, and check if the manufacturer offers an international warranty rather than local. 10. Accessorises and compatibilities When pricing a laptop, set aside some cash for important extras such as a laptop bag, an extra battery, a mouse, keyboard, software for office work, internet security and an external hard drive for backup. Also a docking station/port replicator if you use it as a desktop. Hallmark Computer is a re-seller of many popular brands like

C-Vue Property Group is quickly gaining a reputation locally as the go to company for executive and corporate rentals. They are a small boutique agency with big aspirations to provide a service level previously unseen in Darwin. C-Vue is affiliated with one of the most successful relocation agencies in Darwin, who work with companies on the Ichthys Gas Project. This means landlords who sign with C-Vue have direct access to corporate tenants who are arriving to Darwin in droves in from all over Australia and internationally. The owners, Honor and Alistair Borg, have an extensive history in the real estate and oil and gas industries. Honor was formally a Director and Licensee for Perth based Caporn Young’s property management division. She built the company’s portfolio to over 600 properties and was awarded Property Manager of the Year by REIWA. From this experience she recognises the pitfalls of maintaining such a large portfolio. “Our philosophy at C-Vue is based around premium properties and quality tenants. This enables us to keep our portfolio small, which in turn means we can focus on providing exceptional service to our landlords” Alistair’s background in Oil and Gas and Real Estate combined gives him a unique perspective in Darwin’s booming property sector. “Darwin is not a one trick pony like some of the other towns around Australia that have been transformed by Oil and Gas and then fallen flat after the initial impact. There is a depth here and it is exciting to be amongst it.” “The challenges are there but they are ones we thrive on overcoming. One of our biggest hurdles is finding enough quality properties that meet the standards of our corporate clients. So if you are thinking about leasing your property and like the sound of a corporate tenant, we want to hear from you.” C-Vue has previously leased houses and apartments ranging from $700pw to$2500pw, from Cullen Bay to Howard Springs. They say that the interest is there across the board, it’s just a matter of getting the right properties in front of the right people at the right time.

Volunteers acknowledged, recognized and celebrated

National Volunteers Week 11-18 May This year Australia celebrates the 25th Anniversary of National Volunteer Week (NVW). The week, which runs from 11 – 18 May, is an opportunity for us to celebrate, acknowledge and reward the enormous contribution that volunteers make in Australia and the Northern Territory. Volunteers have a real power in today’s society – and a drive that allows them to make a true difference in the world – can you imagine what it would be like without them? At the time of the last Census (2011) 6.2 million Australians stated that they volunteered. Based on a conservative estimate of volunteer time at $27.00 per hour - this adds up to a staggering value of $211 billion. It exceeds the annual value of retailing, mining or agriculture in Australia! This huge contribution demonstrates that volunteering is more than just a ‘component’ of our society. It is an integral part of the ‘fabric’ that weaves our communities together. The NT leads the way nationally in volunteering. Darwin has the highest level of volunteering of any capital city in Australia - by a huge 9%. The Territory also has the equal highest level of community volunteering of any state or territory in Australia, which demonstrates clearly how our wide range of cultures, interests and

Take responsibility, Take action,

Create Change …stuck in “They did it to me!” thinking… Are you challenged by the demands of your life, business or the workplace? Is it getting harder to stay on top of issues? What about understanding those you love, live and work with? We all are facing challenging times more than ever. To be effective in all aspects of life we need to better understand ourselves and those around us. What are we talking about? It’s simple, the ability to listen, communicate effectively, understand and respect others Model of the World and to have a focussed direction in what we want to achieve in life. Your ability to focus on what you want in life can be challenging in itself. How often have you had dreams, ambitions and amazing ideas but you ended up sabotaging yourself. You had thoughts of “…I don’t have enough time…”, “…I’m too old to learn…”, “…I’m not pretty enough…” or you are stuck in “They did it to me!” thinking that justifies what you can’t or did not do. Focussing on what you want and not thinking of reasons why you may fail is your path to success. Too often we are held back by our own internal fears, doubts and anxieties that we have been cultivating since we were born. Some of us are very good at being victims of our own life. We are talking about the victims of bad relationships, work situations, the economy, even their own families. Such people are living in Effect of their environment. Understanding and acknowledging such past events allows us to move into Cause and make progress in a positive direction.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of how the mind takes in information around us. How we Generalise, Distort and Delete information based on our past experiences and thereby create our Model of the World. NLP also allows you to understand language patterns which are important to create rapport with others to improve communication, sales, service and relationships. Do you want to make changes to how you see the world; to improve all your relationships, your business, your life? Do you want to feel peaceful, comfortable in your own skin as you go ahead and with confidence to make changes to the relationships in your life? NLP is your opportunity to re-program your life, create strategies for success and make a difference in your life and those you love, live and work with. Come and talk with us about what you want to achieve.

yourself

with the

right people The importance of the people you surround yourself with cannot be underestimated. It isn’t about the amount of ‘likes’ or the number of Linkedin connections or Twitter followers. It is about who the people you hang out with, who will lift, inspire and push you to keep you moving forward. Peers have always been an important part of a person’s social and emotional development. At around three years of age peers start to become important. Watch a five year old in their first year of school and they quickly work out who are the ‘naughty’ kids, the ‘good’ kids, and the ones with good lunches. They quickly establish who will serve a purpose for them, even if it is who is willing to swap an apple for chocolate. Most successful people attribute their success

to having a good team around them, or having people ‘smarter’ than them as their co-worker. Think of the two Steves. Apple’s Steve Jobs was the visionary and the driver behind the success of Apple. But it was the other Steve, Steve Wozniak who was the genius behind the technology that created and drove Apple forward. In order to build the team that is right for you the following four questions need to be answered. 1. What do I need from others? 2. Why do I need that? 3. Who can help? 4. How can I connect with them?

Be clear about what you need and connect with the right people for you. They are there!

Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you too can become great” Mark Twain

D arwin has been good to

Richard & Patricia Woodside Richard and Patricia flew into Darwin from Bail on a DC3 in1974. Richard from the States, and Patricia from France, had met in a café in the Latin Quarter in Paris and decided to go travelling together. They initially set off on a cargo ship sailing from Las Palmas to Durban; Richard working as a deckhand and Patricia, finding the cook deceased in his bed at sea, taking over the role of ship’s cook. After many exciting adventures in Africa and Asia, they arrived in Darwin. Richard recalls those early days. “We made our way immediately to a house in Westralia Street where we knew we could stay for $1 per night. There were 25 people there that night. During our first afternoon, a ute arrived asking if any of the men wanted to work the next day. I put my hand up and I spent the next six months working on the roads for Halkitis Bros. The hardest part for me was trying to drink five schooners in the pub at lunchtime – every man on the crew had to have his shout. Later that evening another car pulled up looking for people to work as cleaners in the local pub and Patricia immediately volunteered. After so many months on the road, we were both eager to work. Darwin was an interesting town, unlike anything we had ever experienced. Hundreds of people were living on Lameroo Beach due to an acute accommodation shortage. We had no transport but it was easy to get around by hitchhiking. It was almost a certainty that whoever picked you up would have an open can of beer between their legs. The people were so friendly and accepting. After six months, we had saved enough money to set off again, this time backpacking slowly across Asia and Europe back to France. But we missed Darwin and in 1976, we returned with our only possessions in two small backpacks. This time we had no intention of leaving. Hitchhiking out of the airport, I asked the man who had picked us up if he needed someone to use the tools in the back of his ute. He hired me before I got out of the car, and I worked as a builder’s labourer for him for nine months. One day, I read an advertisement saying that people with a university degree could do a Graduate Diploma in Education and be guaranteed a teaching position. I had studied anthropology in California so I thought ‘why not’. I continued to work on the early morning garbage run and work as a labourer on the Casuarina hospital site in the afternoon but I was free to do my studies at night. I started teaching at Stuart Part Primary School in 1981. I spent 18 years working with indigenous students from remote communities and then completed my Masters in Education. As it happens, I am now the Assistant Principal back at the same school where I started. Darwin was a small country town when we arrived. We feel so lucky to have been able to grow and develop with the city. Patricia continues to work at the Parap Family Centre where she has endeared herself to two generations of Darwin families who have had the benefits of her excellent French culinary skills. Our son Ben, and daughter Heloise, have had idyllic childhoods growing up here is Darwin, close to nature with the most friendly, unpretentious people in the world.”

Sonja and Sam longed for a dream holiday home in their ideal location, Lake Bennett, a beautiful setting that is perfect for weekend getaways.

Working hard throughout the week Sonja and her family longed to cool off in the fresh water, kayak around the lake and watch the striking sunsets surrounded by native birds and wildlife. As existing home owners they naturally approached their bank looking for a second home loan and were saddened by the banks response. “It was really disappointing to find out the policies of our bank meant our dream may be out of reach.” Their bank viewed the rural location of the Lake Bennett property to be a risky investment as they had doubts it would maintain the current value. They therefore would not accept the property as security against the loan, even though Sonja and Sam had an existing relationship with the bank. Still wanting to achieve their dream, Sonja and Sam received advice from a fellow Lake Bennett property owner and approached TIO. As a local company TIO know the area and are able to apply local knowledge to their customer’s situations, for this, they will be forever grateful, “we love our holiday home and have spent every weekend there from the day we got the keys. I have a deep appreciation to TIO for helping to make our dreams come true.” If you would like to talk to TIO about your home loan options, contact Donna Downs, TIO’s mobile home lending specialist, on 0427 425 050 or ddowns@tiofi.com.au. Donna can visit you wherever you are, at a time that suits you.

Whispers on Cavenagh

“Limited affordable property in Darwin…”

Whispers on Cavenagh

For Sale

87a Cavenagh Street | Darwin Now Selling Priced from $490,00

Darwin has seen rapid growth over the past few decades. It has also had the unique challenge of having to quickly provide housing for an expanding population, particularly after Cyclone Tracy in 1974 which destroyed more than 80 % of the existing houses in Darwin. As such, limited supply of suitable housing has been an issue in Darwin, in particular in recent times due to a shortage of greenfield land. Vacant land prices in Darwin have rapidly escalated in price over the last 5 years, with an average block of land priced around $300,000. In addition, due to its isolation, building costs in Darwin are also expensive with a modest building quote generally starting at $300,000. This means that a buyer can now expect to pay at least $600,000 for a new house, a figure which is generally out reach for the majority of young buyers. As a result, the lack of affordable housing has seen a strong pick up in apartment

and townhouse development. There is a now a good array of apartments on the market and currently under development which offer the ideal stepping stone for young buyers. To encourage first time buyers to enter the market, NT Government is currently offering a First Home Buyers grant of $25,000 for newly constructed property that is priced under $600,000. The grant will assist in reducing the costs associated with property and for young buyers it will ideally help cover their stamp duty liability. At present, development in Darwin is at one of the highest levels on record. To ensure healthy competition, builders are continuing to provide innovative and affordable design to please a sophisticated buyer market. Combined with the First Home Buyers grant, these current conditions present an ideal opportunity for buyers to enter the market and begin to enjoy stable capital growth.

Dianne Stephens A ssociate P rofessor

You may have recently read a story about organ donation in the newspaper or heard about it on the radio. It may surprise you to learn that organ donation takes place right here in the Top End of Australia. DonateLife NT is the organ donation agency situated at Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) where a team of specialised staff are responsible for facilitating the donation process across the NT. This team is overseen by one remarkable woman, Associate Professor Dianne Stephens. A/Prof Dianne Stephens is the State Medical Director of DonateLife NT and the Director of the Intensive Care Unit at RDH. Dianne graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1988 and after completing her training in Melbourne, moved to Darwin in 1998 as the first Intensive Care Specialist in the NT. In addition to her work in intensive care, in 2001, A/Prof Stephens established the first organ donation agency in the NT. From its small beginnings with only 1 staff member in 2001 until its expansion, thanks to the national reform agenda in 2009, the donation agency has come a long way. DonateLife NT undertakes a variety of activities including coordinating donations, supporting donor families and educating health professionals and the community about organ and tissue donation. In 2013, the NT achieved the highest rate of organ donation in Australia with 29.2 donors per million population - well above the national average of 16.9 donors per million population. This highlights both the generosity of Territorians as well as the excellent work of DonateLife NT. A/Prof Stephens says “in 2013, seven generous donors and their families saved or changed the lives of 23 transplant recipients in Australia. I encourage all Territorians to have the chat about organ and tissue donation with their loved ones - your decision may save a life one day.

DREAM T E A M S It is a no-brainer that if you want your staff to be productive in the workplace, they must work as a team. Employees working as part of a team feel valued and it strengthens the bond between staff members. Activities that require team building helps builds self-esteem, respect, successful communication strategies and allows employees to feel their contribution matters. Employees who work as a team also have a lasting impression to business clients, resulting in good word of mouth and higher credibility. Teamwork means a sense of unity, of enthusiasm for common interests and responsibilities, as developed among a group of persons closely associated in a task, cause, enterprise. It can be likened to two compounds, almost essential to modern life. It’s the glue, which keeps a team together, a bond that promotes strength, unity, reliability and support. Teamwork is also the oil that makes the team work. It can enable smoother movement towards targets, can prolong forward momentum, and can help teams to overcome obstacles. Teamwork has the potential to underpin so much of what is valuable in work. In fact, the benefits to be gained from teamwork synergies are essential for the effective management of resources. Behind every successful business is the team of workers. Having a great team is important. Whether it’s a duo or a large group, the dynamics of a successful team lies in their matching work ethic. In this issue we turn the spotlight on a number of teams. We have bookkeepers, chefs, waiters, automative electrical accessory installers, roofers, gym instructors, recruitment agents and conveyancers. Their bosses all say that their team is the secret to their success.

PRODIGY CONSTRUCTIONS AND ROOFING

Hardworking,

loyalty and responsibility are important If you go by Prodigy Constructions & Roofing owner Agi Agapitos’ word, the roofing business is going ‘through the roof’! “Seriously, we have so much work we can’t keep up,” he said. “Just for one of our building contracts we have 95 houses to do before Christmas, with another 140 possibly coming up before then. On top of that, we have another 100 houses to do for other companies. The key to our success is my team, they are great, and they will work seven days a week to make sure the jobs get done.” Agi started his business 10 years ago with Michael Lymberis, Steve Lymberis and Manual Lias, and his company has since grown to a team of 25. “We can build a house, school or shed, but right now we’re focusing solely on roofing. It is so busy that we needed to concentrate on one thing rather than multiple things. Quality is important,” he said. “We are doing four roofs a week, my team are pumping out a lot of work.” Besides efficiency, Agi said his team are quality roofers who don’t slack off. “They are all hard working boys, that appreciate the job they do and the finishes they provide – they take real pride in their work,” he said. “They are not afraid of hard work. They all have their own tasks to do, so if one slacks off it lets the whole team down.” Agi said his team is a mix of apprentices and ‘master tradesmen’. “I have two in their 60s 64

DarwinLife Magazine

and one who’s 70, they’re still getting up there and working on the roofs,” he said. “They are really good at advising and training the younger ones.” “Roofing is a dying trade,” Agi continued. “So we really need to get some young blood in and train them up – and train them well. I like to try and keep on our apprentices because they have been trained by the best! I’ve had plenty of guys who say they’ve worked as a roofer down south. But being a Darwin-trained roofer is different. You’re better skilled as you have to roof houses for cyclonic conditions and extreme weathers.” Agi’s crew work hard and he is generous in rewarding them. “I buy some of the older guys an annual return airfare back to Greece so they can visit their family and friends,” he said. “I’ve also sent some guys on trips to Thailand, and I often buy tickets to football

games and other events. Hardworking, loyalty and responsibility are important to me – if my staff show me that I will go out of my way to reward them. At the end of the day, my business relies upon them.”

our crew is the key to our success

“We are very picky about who we choose to be part of our team,” Pavonia Place owner Renee Flis said. “It’s not about just putting a plate on the table, it’s about making our customers feel welcome and them wanting to come back. It’s about giving them a memorable experience. We rely upon our staff to sell our product, they represent us.”

Renee said her and co-owner Isaac Klugt feel very lucky to have their ‘dream team’. “We couldn’t do this without them,” she said. “We have a great team from the back of house to the front, each and every one of them are important to our success.” “We treasure and value our crew, and we have very high expectations of them. Most of them do this as a second job,” she said. “They are here because they want to be here, we are like one big family.” “In fact, all of our staff members often say they don’t just do it for money, they do it for the love of it! They are passionate and knowledgeable which really shines through, and the customer’s appreciation of our high standard of service often is their major

motivator.” So how do Renee & Isaac show their appreciation? “We regularly socialize with each other, we have fun incentive games during service, and we have a quarterly staff party. In the past we have been as a team to beer and wine tasting events, and one staff party highlight was a day out on a catamaran around Darwin’s beautiful Harbour.” Renee said it’s important to show appreciation to the team and encourage a culture of positivity. “We want them to be happy, if they aren’t happy and don’t enjoy working here it reflects in their service to our valued customers, it is essential for them to be passionate and to love what they do.” Renee continued by saying that her and Isaac appreciate feedback from not

only customers but their staff as well. “When our new head chef drafted our new menu we had a tasting night for all the crew. We wanted to involve them and their feedback resulted in some positive changes to the menu.” “Isaac and I are very lucky, we are so thankful to have such a good crew.”

Extreme Auto Installations

Extreme Auto

I nstallations Extreme Auto Installations are the best in a very niche business. There aren’t many who can call themselves Automotive Electrical Accessory Installers, but Carlos Aberasturi and his team are whizzes when it comes to adding value to your car. More than an auto electrician, they install aftermarket electrical accessories to vehicles and boats making the driving experience safer and much more enjoyable. For the past 10 years Extreme Auto Installations have made sure that all the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services vehicles are the best in the business. “There is no room for error when you are working on the Police, Fire and Emergency Service vehicles. You can’t have them break down in an emergency or out in a remote area. We have won the contract three consecutive times, that’s testament to our work,” he said. “But my dream is that everyone has access to the high quality service we provide, we want to get the message out there to people that we are here and can really enhance your car to being the ‘dream car’.” Whilst Carlos and his team are trained in the automotive electrical trade, they choose to focus on the specialised field of installing accessories rather than solely repairing existing systems as auto electricians do. Carlos said. “Our 66

DarwinLife Magazine

field is more specialized,” he said. “We install accessories such as cruise controls, pedestrian and collision safety systems, in-car entertainment systems, lighting systems, solar panels and much more.” One of the installations he highly recommends to mums and dads is a reverse safety system to the family car. “My mate recently had one installed after he accidentally drove over his three year old son’s bike on the driveway,” he said. “It gave him a real fright. And being a father of four girls I can’t recommend it highly enough.” Carlos said installing the system wasn’t as expensive as people thought. “We can install a simple but effective one for less than $500, which is very little for the piece of mind it will bring.” Carlos said he really valued his staff and what they brought to his company. “They are all great, and really good at what they do,” he said. “We are all

perfectionists, I think they caught it off me! We prefer to take a bit more time to make sure that the job is of the utmost quality. We want to do not just a good job, but rather a great one. Now, that’s not to say we take ages, it’s just we pay attention to the little things.” “That’s the thing my team and I are passionate about our job. We simply love cars. And we get a thrill from improving them for our customers. Each job is different and it’s a fantastic feeling making a vehicle even more special.”

BCA NATIONAL TRAINING GROUP

personality counts at

BC A

Personality and cultural fit are important to being part of BCA National Training Group’s team. “Our team in Darwin is small so it’s really important we work together and personality plays a big part in that,” NT/WA Training Manager Olivia Philips said. “We employ on personality and cultural fit as well as placing an emphasis on qualifications. Qualifications enable staff to identify with studying students as well as provide expert advice to our large client pool in their industry of choice.,” she said. “During the interview process, I really try to gauge their personality and what motivates them. You can always teach someone what they don’t know, but you can’t change a person’s ethics or personality. Qualifications are also a sign of dedication and seeing things through to the end, as studying isn’t always easy! Everyone has a big part to play in our small team. We have a lot of courses and work coming up so it is critical that we all get along and do our bit.” The Darwin branch of BCA National Training Group started with just Olivia when she moved here from Sydney two years ago. Slowly but surely the team has grown to five to include Laura, Kirsty, Shauni and Zoe. BCA is an award winning training organisation

that offers nationally recognised courses and professional development workshops in Business and Finance, Community Services, Education and Training, Governance, and Remote and Rural. Their head office is in Sydney, but they have offices opening up across the nation and train people in remote and rural communities. “When I set up the office here in Darwin I wanted to capture the culture of the Sydney office,” Olivia said. “We really care about each other and we celebrate each other’s milestones. We never miss a birthday, we regularly go out for lunches and socialise on Fridays after work. Zoe, our trainee, is also working on a team-building event – it looks like it might be ten pin bowling or maybe outdoor bowls, so that will be fun.” Olivia said that although they are based in Darwin, the team is still very much connected to the Sydney office. “We go to Sydney each year for the annual strategic planning meeting and also for the head office Christmas party,”

she said. “We also have regular video conferences with the Sydney team.” Olivia said she’s proud of her team. “They really take initiative – I will think of something, and it has already been done. They are fantastic. It’s a young team but they are very passionate about what they do and have a lot of energy, ideas and experience. We have only been a complete group since late last year, and we are now starting to find our pace and gelling together. We definitely complement each other, it just works, and as a result our clients benefit from us having such good people.”

KHB

KHB

DREAM T E A M S

Run your business, K H B will look after your books

In a mere four months KHB Bookkeeping has grown from a ‘one woman band’ to a team of five, and owner Katherine Haines could not be happier. “The amount of growth is overwhelming, and I’m so thankful,” Katherine said. “We have gone from a handful of clients to managing the books of 30 businesses. We’ve had so much support and my team are fantastic.”

Katherine had been juggling several freelance jobs, a full time position at a bank as well as helping husband Andrew set up his business A & K Maintenance & Mechanical. “It got too chaotic so I decided to leave my job and concentrate on growing my business and helping Andrew,” she said. And, she hasn’t looked back since. “It has been great and I’m assembling a quality team from highly qualified administrative to degree qualified accountants,” she said. “They are all very unique and bring a different thing to the table. Everyone’s two cents here counts for two dollars in my eyes.” And KHB Bookkeeping’s clients couldn’t agree more. Georgia Lofts from Full Boar Enterprises said the team’s expert accounting knowledge was a huge asset. “It has helped drive the company forward – all our company accounting goals that were outlined to KHB at the beginning have been achieved and they have exceeded our expectations,” she said. While Pete Brenton from Top End Tools said, “KHB Bookkeeping have been doing my books since October 2013 and I’m over the moon that my BAS and monthly paperwork is completed in a timely manner with little hassle”. Certified Practicing Accountant Tom Jelly also highly recommends them, saying, “I recommend KHB to any business wanting to have a bookkeeper who can capably manage their Accounting Records.” Katherine said she was so pleased with the level of support that Territory small businesses have shown as well as established accountants with their referrals. “My team benefits the client because really they have not one, but a

team of five, working for them,” she said. “We collaborate and work together well and this only is a positive thing for our clients.” Katherine said they are focusing on helping small businesses and tradespeople. “They are often so overwhelmed trying to run their business, do their work, secure new jobs – and don’t have the time or ‘know how’ to do their book work. That’s where we come in,” she said. “As I say, spend your day running your business, we’ll look after your books.” KHB Bookkeeping’s team of registered BAS agents and experienced bookkeepers has the knowledge and energy to keep company’s books up-to-date, handle payroll and perform lodgments professionally. “We get small business owners out of their books and back into their business by reducing the burden of book work,” Katherine said. “My team will save you time, money, and unnecessary headaches. When you work with us, you’ll rest easy knowing that everything from payroll to lodgements are being handled the right way.”

Dianne Jarrett and Sue Lawrie make a great team. You just have to meet them to see they bounce off each other well, making you instantly comfortable and welcome in their Parap office. The duo own Jarrett Lawrie Conveyancing and have been partners for over 12 years. “We work well together and complement each other in our styles,” Dianne said. “I tend to stress more, and Sue tends to be more relaxed, but what we share is a commitment to our clients and a passion for our work. We both believe in getting on with the job and doing it well.” Sue said they have known each other for about 30 years. “We were both starting out as conveyancing clerks in law firms,” she said. “In 2002, we decided to join forces and haven’t looked back since - we’ve been together longer than some marriages!” “But seriously, this gives us a strength because it makes our customers confident that we have been around for awhile, we know our stuff and there is a sense of stability,” Sue said. “Put simply, we’re not just business partners, we’re friends.” 70

Sharing a practice has given the pair a great work-life balance, and they work together across all their client files. “When one is away, the client is still attended to by the other,” Dianne said. “A client can always reach one of us and we will know the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of their file. It’s like getting two highly experienced conveyancers for the price of one.” Dianne added they also have a parttime personal assistant Anne-Marie as part of their team. “We can’t forget Anne-Marie – she’s brilliant, very good at what she does and with our clients. She enhances our team.” Sue said Jarrett Lawrie Conveyancing focuses on residential as well as some commercial work. “I’m quite proud that we get a lot of referrals and repeat customers,” she said. “A lot of our clients recommend us to their family and friends. Some of our clients are those we worked with

when we started out at the beginning of our careers, and we’re now seeing their children and grandchildren coming to us. So we must be doing something right!” Dianne said other than their solid relationship and teamwork; customer service was their other strength. “It’s important to Sue and I that we don’t treat our customers like a number or another dollar, it’s important we do a good job and foster a strong relationship.”

“We really work well together – we’re only a new team but it’s like we’ve been working together for years,” HR Links General Manager Joe Martin-Jard said. “Most of the team started late last year or early this year and I’m very happy how the dynamic is working.” HR Links is a recruitment and labour hire company that specializes in providing workers for civil construction and mining companies as well as the Darwin Port. Rob and Shannon Rusca acquired 100% of HR Links in 2013 and recruited Joe MartinJard as the General Manager. HR Links specializes in placing Indigenous workers across a number of industries. Joe said he has been impressed and proud of his team of eight. “We’ve had a steep learning curve, particularly with the Ichthys Greenfields Agreement as it is quite complex, so the team have had to get their heads around that in a very short space of time,” he said. “Recently we have been very busy – we’ve gone from regular business hours to sometimes working seven days a week. Noone has complained and they just get on with the job.” “They have risen to the extra challenge of our labour workforce numbers doubling this year in a variety of sectors with a range of differing awards and employment conditions,” he said. “They have been hitting their targets and regularly exceeding expectations, it’s fantastic and I feel very thankful that I’ve got such a great team.” Joe felt that the team really went out of their way to help and support each other. “Most have family commitments outside of work, and they often help each other out to achieve a work/ life balance,” he said. “But they are also very supportive of our workers – they regularly provide a lot of support and advice on their resumes, arranging medical

appointments and other activities to get them into the workforce. They are very caring and keep a focus on our clients’ interests, our workers’ wellbeing and our business bottom line. It’s a challenging tightrope to walk at times.” HR Links is very supportive of its employees. “Senior people in the team like John ‘KJ’ Taylor bring over 30 years of HR experience that he shares with our younger team members. (KJ was on a wellearned break when the photo was taken). We try to make sure that the work environment is positive and supportive, we have the latest technology, remuneration that’s above award, flexible work arrangements and regular social get togethers,” he said. “It’s really good that we also have strong company directors who have a very clear vision for the team to follow, and they will reward those who work hard for them.” Joe said he is confident that his team will only get stronger and stronger the more they work with each other. “It has been less than a year, yet the team just works, we’ve got it right and that will only benefit our customers.”

CrossFit

CrossFit vs Imitations

STYLE

I have been coaching CrossFit for almost a decade now, and word is getting out about how effective CrossFit can be. As a result, we always hear rumblings that a couple of local gyms are now planning to incorporate “CrossFit style” workouts. While we think everyone can benefit from CrossFit, I am leery about imitators. True CrossFit incorporates Olympic lifts, endurance WODs, gymnastics, heavy lifts, multi-joint movements, balance, accuracy etc. Why, because it works. Simply doing circuits everyday is NOT CrossFit. You must train across broad times and modal domains to get the results. Furthermore, CrossFit coaches are taught how to train these movements in a HIGH INTENSITY environment. We’ve yet to find a traditional personal trainer who knows how to lift, swing and move properly, or the ins and outs of how to properly prepare for a workout of the day (WOD), and the progression scales of the exercise. They exist but why go to a tap dancer for ballet? If you are looking for CrossFit, do CrossFit. If a program – whether it be boot camp, P90x, or zumba – gets people moving, we think that’s great! All we’re saying is, if it’s not certified CrossFit, it’s NOT CrossFit.

Accept no IMITATIONS!

Don’t be fooled; all CrossFit gyms are not created equal either!

Experience - CrossFit Territory coaching staff has been affiliated since 2008. Our coaching staff brings with them over a decade of experience in coaching and helping people reach their goals. The certifications we hold are important, but they pale in comparison to the real world experience that can only come from devoting your life to hands-on coaching. If you are looking for world class coaching, then CrossFit Territory is the place for you on the island. Passion - Time and time again members visit other affiliates while traveling, and it’s always great to hear their feedback. We love hearing that there is something “special” about the atmosphere. We strive to make our gym a friendly, fun place to be. Dedication - I get asked this a lot, “So, what else do you do besides CrossFit?” The answer is simple, NOTHING. CrossFit is not just a hobby to us; I took the leap and we dedicate ourselves fully to helping you reach your goals. You can always be sure you’ll receive top-notch coaching from people who are fully committed to coaching you. Knowledge - When it comes to talking nutrition, be careful who you are speaking to. Reading the Paleo Solution and a couple of articles does not make an expert. Through thousands of hours of research, we have developed our own blend of the Paleo-ish diet that will optimize not only your performance in the gym and your sexiness at the beach, but also increase overall health and longevity.

It’s time to have Spending time with your children is important. It’s the little thing that they will remember. It is not fair to kids to be giving them just half of your attention. If you are able to have fun with your kids no matter what then you will be a more balanced parent and your family will enjoy more balanced relationships. The best part about it is that it is so easy to have fun with your kids because it is absolutely natural. It can be as simple as taking your dog for a walk, to throwing a Frisbee in the park. Children just want to spend quality time with you. Parents may rediscover their inner child and sense of ‘joie de vivre’. GET AMONGST IT AT CROCOSAURUS COVE

Get Amongst It | DarwinLife

I’m a Territory girl through and through. I grew up camping and fishing at ‘croc’ infested waters, spent my childhood in a tiny dinghy at Daly River and Shady Camp with crocs sunning themselves nearby. I’m NOT scared of crocodiles. Or so I thought … that is, until I came face to face with an 18ft saltie called ‘Chopper’ at Crocosaurus Cove, then I had to eat my words. I was terrified!

Now, let’s put this in perspective. I’m being lowered into the crystal clear waters of Chopper’s tank in the cylindricalperspex ‘cage of death’ with my English workmate, Steph, and it’s all fine. We are high-fiving each other, full of bravado, thinking this is not scary, another tick on our bucket list – until the water starts inching up further and further, and we go deeper and deeper. Steph is fine but I’m getting a tad nervous. Not sure if it’s because I have this prehistoric ‘monster’ less than half a metre away with only few inches of perspex between us or what, but my heart is thudding so loud that it’s making my head hurt and ears pound! Expletives that would make my family blush are pouring out of my mouth. “I wasn’t scared,” Steph says, “But I have to say I was pleased there were those few inches of perspex between us!” I’m writing this story looking at her doubtfully. It’s all well and good to say that now we are safe and sound, but I was there and saw her in the first part of our experience. She was just as scared! Or was she? “Well, ok, when they started to feed Chopper and he was thrashing around, his jaws thudding against the cage adding to the existing scratches, I had a moment,” she said. “But once I realised we were completely safe and he was well fed, I was fascinated being up close and personal with this creature that has outlived the dinosaurs. It was truly an amazing experience!” Chopper, our 790 kilogram 80 year old battle-scarred reptilian friend, swam nearby us and except for having his chicken dinner, left us alone. He’s the crowd favourite and star attraction at Crocosauras Cove. Named after the infamous criminal, Chopper Reid, the

croc had a pretty tough life before being the Cove’s top croc. He’s missing his two front feet from fights with younger crocs when he lived downstream west of Darwin. Dundee, Wendell, Burt, Denzel and Houdini and Bess (William and Kate) join Chopper as the aweinspiring, gut-dropping line-up at the centre located on Mitchell Street in Darwin. Next up, after we were wrenched from Chopper’s tank, the DarwinLife team visited the ‘Fishing for Crocs’ attraction. With our adrenaline still pumping, we stood on a platform surrounded by about 100 hungry juvenile salties. Now, they may only be two to three years old, but they are hungry little buggers launching themselves out of the water for their snack dangling from our fishing lines. They may not be as big and ferocious as their fellow attractions, but they still have a lot of power and a very loud snap! To round off our visit, we stopped by to hold Fluffy, the baby croc. The first thing that struck me about Fluffy was how soft his skin was, second was that he was thrashing round a lot, and thirdly (and thankfully) that his snout was firmly secured. -Lucky, as he may have been small but I’m sure he would’ve enjoyed snacking on one of our fingers! Despite this, it is hard to imagine this little cutie will grow up to be as mean looking as his mates like Chopper. All in all, it doesn’t matter if you’re a local or a tourist; Crocosaurus Cove is well worth a visit. It’s a uniquely Territory experience and one you can recount for many years to come. The one where you stared death in the eyes and survived! But don’t take my word for it, experience it for yourself !

creative I believe that making art with children is as much about developing creative thinking and confidence as it is about fun and experimentation. However, while much of the value of children’s art lies in the creative process and isn’t necessarily outcome driven; it goes without saying that when a child creates something beautiful, meaningful and successful, they are inspired to keep creating. I love printmaking as a way of engaging children who feel unsure about their drawing skills as it allows every child the opportunity to make something really stunning and to quite simply, feel good about themselves as an artist. There are a number of printmaking methods that are simple, fun and very easy to do at home and here are just a few. • Leaf printing. Go into the garden and gather a handful of nice, big, meaty leaves. They should ideally have lots of ridges, lines and texture. Paint the top side of the leaf and gently lay your paper on top. Smooth over

the clean side of the paper gently with a clean cloth and then carefully lift the paper away from the leaf. Try layering the pattern with different leaves and different coloured paints. This method also works well for repetitive patterns. • Depending on the age of your kids, all kinds of regular household objects can make fantastic printing instruments. I’m sure everyone remembers making potato prints when they were young. You can also try apples and oranges cut in half (with the excess juice blotted off with paper towel), construction blocks, kitchen scourers and sponges cut into shapes. • You can buy printers foam from art supply shops that allow you to draw a simple design in pen or a pointed instrument like a skewer. You simply use a roller to apply paint or

printers ink to the design on the foam sheet and then place your paper over the top. Again, smooth over gently with a clean cloth and peel away the paper. Don’t forget to have fun and experiment! Until next time SEE, MAKE, DO!

COMMON Being a teen isn’t easy; being the parent of a teen is sometimes even harder. Here are a few pointers on understanding what your teenager is going through and how best you can be there for him.

4

The

Firstly, self-esteem. During puberty, teenagers have major problems with self-esteem; there are major spurts in physical growth; hair springing up in unlikely places; cracks in his voice and pimples popping up, causing major embarrassment. Ensure that your teen feels as comfortable and informed as possible about these changes and visit your GP should acne be a problem, for medication or further referral; don’t just let it go on! Your teen should already be responsible for doing certain chores around the house; but may now become a little resentful about them. Have a chat about renegotiating chores and agreeing on pocket money on completion of the weekly chores. This develops responsibility in your teen. Your teen’s room. It can become a battleground if you push the boundaries. It’s her room; it’s

by DR Jack

her responsibility; she can keep it as she wishes and suffer the consequences (no clean clothes) as long as the door is closed – and the music doesn’t bother the rest of the family. It’s all about ‘give’ and ‘take’ and remembering how you felt when you were a teenager. Really try to keep communication positive and open. You will be challenged; it’s part of being a parent. Remember that you don’t have to win, especially if you are a dad having a discussion with your son! It will get better; it does get better; be firm, honest; set boundaries and don’t forget to still let your teen know that she is loved and gets hugs. ‘Til next time. Be kind to yourself and each other. Best wishes, Dr Jack

s of C parent connection

The language of parenting has four main words for maintaining a strong and positive connection with your children. Connecting requires calm, consistency, caring and confidence. Calm is how parents need to be when they are dealing with their children. This helps to develop the pathways in a child’s brain to think through problems and make good choices. When the brain is calm we can find solutions using both logic and emotion. Angry, agitated, frustrated parents do not role model strength and emotional self-control. This leads to children who tantrum to get their needs met and feel fear in their relationship with their parents. Caring means that we can show empathy when a child’s emotions are out of control. It means listening instead of talking and lecturing. It means waiting to allow a silence that gives the child’s brain the time to process information. Parents often complain to me that their child does not listen, but I see that they are not listening to their child. Parents regularly

use instructional language, so we tune out to communication that feels carping and critical like ‘No, come here’, ‘don’t do that’, ‘tidy your room’, ‘clean your teeth’, ‘you must eat those vegetables’. Consistency is so important for young children. It is through consistency that children learn to develop trust within their family relationships. Consistency means rights are valued, but so are responsibilities. Routines are maintained and importance is attached to regular sleep patterns, nutrition is high on the list of family priorities, rules are maintained and encouraged for all family members and education is supported and valued. When consistency is applied to children’s lives they are less stressed, their behaviour is more co-operative and considerate and their general wellbeing is protected.

by SUE HYDE Confidence develops in the children of confident parents. Confidence comes from a belief in oneself and that is important for parents. What you role model to your children may impact on their lives for ever. Your parenting skills are developed primarily from your own parents. If you want to do better than that, don’t leave your parenting to guess work. Read, talk, observe and listen to others and see if you are doing the very best for your children to live productive and positive lives. The old ways of teaching through obedience and punishment are no longer relevant. Children need problem solving skills, the confidence to make good choices and to be resilient to the challenges in life. Important: remember to stay connected to your children because they are going to look after you in your old age! DarwinLife Magazine

Authentic Indonesian Cuisine in the heart of Darwin

BY JACK STEPHANE

Centrally located in the Smith Street Mall, recently opened Bellakay Restaurant is a great spot for lovers of delicious, fresh Indonesian food at very reasonable prices. Faizal, the owner/manager and his mother Mamma Sania, have given locals a great place for eat in or take away lunches 6 days a week. There are a variety of main courses to choose from, all $12.50; including Beef Randang, a truly aromatic dish with tender pieces of succulent beef, served with saffron rice. Deep, rich flavours. Fish Balado. Generous pieces of Emperor Fish in a balado sauce; a spicy traditional Indonesian condiment, made from a combination of chillies, shallots, garlic and fresh tomato. Again, spicy; yet not over powering. Just right. The Gado gado, one of my favourite Indonesian dishes was a winner. Mamma Sania makes her peanut sauce from scratch, using only local vegetables and produce in all of her cooking. Generous

servings of lightly steamed vegies topped with chopped hard boiled eggs and drizzled with peanut sauce and served with krupuks. Yum. The menu includes a selection of satays $3.50 each; vegetarian meals $12.50 and soups; including several Laksa $11.00. Combination plates are very popular with the lunchtime patrons: Rice with 2 choices $11.00 Rice with 3 choices $13.00 Bellakay is not a fancy upmarket restaurant but the atmosphere and menu reflects Faizal’s passion for good quality Indonesian cooking. Judging by the amount of Indonesian customers and other local patrons queuing out the door, Faizal’s lunchtime specials demonstrate their appreciation for this hidden gem.

Don’t put in on your plate unless

it’s labelled or ‘ask if it’s local’ The Northern Territory is the first to introduce seafood-labelling laws; visitors to the Territory and most importantly Territorians can now make informed choices when buying their local seafood, as all imported seafood is to be labelled as such. Labelling seafood in the Territory is required along the entire supply chain, all the way though to those outlets that sells your families fish and chips. Sometimes it is an innocent error, but often the switch is deliberate, driven by profit. Much of the substitution occurs with imported fish, and you the consumer are blissfully unaware you are eating an imposture and it is as simple as asking if it’s local. The public is frustrated and so they should be. How can we trust the seafood we eat when we can’t even trust basic information on the label or a menu? You, as the consumer, have the right to know exactly where your seafood is being caught. Australian’s imports 70% of the seafood they consumed. Why! Australian seafood lovers deserve the best. stocks are healthy and well managed. In 2012 it was great to see the release of the sustainable status report on Australian wild caught seafood. A simple tool that is available for everybody, with this we can be more confident to ask if it’s local, be more confident that you are purchasing seafood from sustainable waters and be more confident that you are supporting Australian businesses. The report can be found on www.fish.gov.au For seafood consumers in the Territory informed choices can be easily made. I can assure you that purchasing seafood that displays “Support NT Caught” has been caught from Territory waters. Everything old is new again. Well, at least it should be!

It’s never too early to start being eco and fabulous. Every morning Asha and I enjoy our green smoothies from uber cool Rainy Sunday jars, available from Humidity Gifts.

Every year Australians create 43.8 million tonnes of garbage. That is 2,100kg per person, per year. That’s a lot of garbage clogging up our streets, airways and beautiful open spaces. That’s a lot of garbage breaking down and contributing to hotter and longer wet seasons. That’s a lot of garbage that doesn’t need to be produced. I know that recycling isn’t a very glamorous subject, wheelie bins and rubber gloves seldom are, but there is a fashionable side to being eco-friendly. The most staring-us-in-the-face-celebrityendorsed one is the mason jar. The mason jar was patented in 1858 in the USA and was traditionally used for preserving food. Nowadays you will see them gracing the pages of Pinterest holding green smoothies, chia puddings, layered salads or overnight oats all topped with brightly coloured enameled lids. The best thing is, you use it, you wash it and you use it again. What a novel idea. Buying things that you keep instead of throwing away after one use. Oh wait…that’s what we used to do. That is, until we changed into consuming machines. So I think it’s time to change our thinking again and stop the waste. Here’s how: • Buy investment clothes and shun disposable fashion. • Take your own (glamorous) containers

to be filled with takeaway food and drinks or bulk items from the grocers and health food shops. • When shopping, choose items that have little to no packaging. • Re-think your household garbage, start a worm farm and sort your rubbish for recycling. It’s not difficult to be eco, remember that our planet needs your love too.

octopus salad Greeks eat a lot of octopus, and a cold octopus salad is a common meze (appetizer) served with raki or ouzo, the local anise-flavored liqueurs. This is my take on the classic, which uses olive oil infused with fresh oregano as well as green olives steeped in bitter Seville orange juice. Prep Time: 3 hours, 15 minutes Total Time: 3 hours, 15 minutes Ingredients: • 1 large octopus or 4 small ones (not the baby ones) • The tops from a fennel bulb • 1 sprig of fresh rosemary • 4-5 bay leaves • 1 large bunch of fresh oregano • 1/2 cup olive oil • Juice of a lemon • 1 T. tiny capers • salt Preparation: Cook the octopus. Thaw and blanch in boiling water for 1 minute. Cut off the head, then put the legs in a brazier or a shallow

ovenproof pot or pan that has a lid. Add all but a few sprigs of the fennel tops, bay leaves and rosemary, then nestle the legs on top of them. Cover the pot and bake in a 200-degree oven for up to 3 hours; you will only need 2 hours if you are using small octopi. Meanwhile, make the oregano oil. Finely chop all but a few sprigs of the oregano and place in the bowl of a food processor. Add the oil and process at high speed until it is smooth, at least 3 minutes. Scrape the sides from time to time. Drain the oil through a cheesecloth into a bottle or some other container. It will keep for a week or two. Finely chop the remaining fennel tops and the remaining oregano. When the octopus is done, let it cool, then toss it with enough of the oregano oil to coat nicely -- be pretty liberal with it -- then mix in the lemon juice, herbs, salt and the capers. Serve with green olives and ouzo. DarwinLife Magazine

As a designer, I try not to get caught up in ‘fad’ styles that come and go quickly. They are generally adored and hugely popular amongst some people whilst hated by others. So I tend to research them to see what they are all about to be prepared for the odd client who requests it in a project, but I treat them with a kind of indifference, knowing that they wont be around next season. One style though that keeps appearing on my design radar lately that has me intrigued is ‘street/ghetto style’ as it seems to be sweeping the world and popping up in the most ritzy of neighbourhoods around the world. Rough finishes, mismatched furnishings and the use of multiple bold colours. A mix of primary colours and often neons all thrown together in a style that I would describe as resembling something like a garage sale crossed with a preschool, typify this style. Here is my selection of the highlights of this rough and ready style. Love it or hate it? You be the judge.

Belly

Fat what type do you have??

There are different types of body fat and belly fat has gotten a welldeserved reputation as an unhealthy fat. Subcutaneous fat is type of fat found directly under the skin. It’s the fat that’s measured using skin-fold calipers to estimate your total body fat. Visceral or “deep” fat wraps around the inner organs and spells trouble for your health. The way to know if you have visceral fat is that you will have a large waist or belly. Visceral fat drives up your risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and even dementia. To gain either type of these fats a person consumes more usable calories than they expend, waste‚ or discards through elimination. A permanent routine of exercise, eating

healthier‚ and consuming the same number or fewer calories than used will prevent and help fight visceral fat. A single kilo of fat is believed to yield approximately 7000 calories of energy, and weight loss is achieved by reducing energy intake. For more information on CoolSculpting for shaping and removing areas of stubborn fat when a healthy weight is obtained visit www.coolsculpting.com or book a free consultation with myself.

It’s that time of the year again girls, time to start thinking about your grooming needs and getting those outfits ready for the racing season. So it’s the age old question, which comes first the dress or the headpiece? Either is actually fine, but if you buy the dress first then it’s a lot easier to have a Milliner make you an amazing piece to go with it. Darwin is the home for about 10 local Milliners, most of whom have a huge amount of training and workshops under their belts. Darwin Millinery Guild is a group that is made up of eight of our local Milliners including myself, if one of us can’t help you then we’re more than happy to send you to someone that can. Simply Elegant at the Darwin GPO is a hat shop and beauty salon, a one stop shop for race goers, a place that you can have your beauty needs met including spray tan, shellac nails, nail extensions, eyelash extensions and waxing, it’s also host to four local Milliners including Helen Rose Millinery, Gina Marie Millinery, Kea Lodge Millinery and Peacock Millinery with plenty of ready made pieces to choose from.

This year we’re very excited to have pieces from Melbourne’s Master Milliner Phillip Rhodes who has had a hand at making pieces for Kylie Minogue, Joanna Lumley and Joan Collins to name a few, he’s work is sold at Myer and David Jones so it’s very exciting for Darwin to have these incredible little masterpieces for sale. Phillip is one of the last Australian Milliners to have received traditional workshop training, developing his craft whilst working in Australia and in London. So girls, it’s time to start speaking with your Milliner of choice now to avoid disappointment, they all book out very quickly.

National Spinal Health W eek

The idea is for us to Feel Better, Play Better and Live Better. Think back to the 1980s when Olivia Newton-John was encouraging us to ‘Get Physical’. Children born in this decade had a life expectancy of 71 for males and 78 for females. Fast forward to 2014 and our lifespans have extended dramatically. Some might be surprised to learn that a male child born today can expect to live to 79.9 and a female 84.3. Unfortunately though, as our lifespans have increased, the getting physical message failed, 63% of Australians are obese and that figure is on the rise. As the Federal Health Minister, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, said in March, “Fully a third of Australia’s burden of disease

is due to lifestyle health risks such as poor diet, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol misuse”. This is the paradox, we are living longer, but we are not living better. For many of us, a longer life is not enough. We want to be active, healthy and capable of enjoying those extra years. Improving our postural fitness and looking after our spine is an important part of designing a longer, healthier lifespan. Chiropractic offers a drug free, surgery free way to effectively manage back pain. Contact one of our CAA member Chiropractors today for an examination and to discuss ways to improve your postural health and fitness.

From 19 to 25 May is National Spinal Health WeekTM, an initiative from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA). This year’s theme for Spinal Health Week is ‘Live Better – We’ve got your back’.

Health Retreat “I will take from you what was not real in the first place (your ego) and give back to you (your gifts) that were always yours”. Osho, a teacher of Rago Dahlsen

MY HANDS SEE The Man Who Fascinated Me For three decades Rago Dahlsen has allowed her hands to see. Shiatsu, Deep Tissue and Swedish massage are how she communicates with our bodies. “In reality I do what my blind grandfather did”, shares Rago, who studied extensively across the world including at India’s Oneness University and Healing Arts University, the School of Mysticism, Green Gulch Zen Centre and Tassajara Zen Mountain Monastery in the US and The Netherlands’ School for De-Hypnosis. “My grandfather could see with his hands and passed this gift to me. Whenever I massage or give an energy reading my eyes are closed and clients don’t need to tell me what’s going on in their bodies; my hands know and my inner eye can see their energy”. The Man Who Started My Search Rago’s father was a driven, enigmatic man and prominent figure of the community. He died aged 36 “I was 15”, remembers Rago. “I was so frustrated and disillusioned about why this brilliant, respected man died so young. At 21 I attended a meditation session that completely woke me and made me realise I wanted I more of this. I had found the essential me and my search had begun. My father’s death had become my inspiration and meditation is the death of the ego”, says Rago, the owner of the Byron Bay Health Retreat for 22 years.

So much energy gets wasted in what you see through your eyes. They’re constantly registering, checking, analysing and judging”.

The People I’m of Service To Rago now offers her services further north and is transforming lives across the Territory at The Byron Bay Retreat in Darwin from worried parents, businesses that need direction, overworked staff, people with pain, terminal illness or handicap to those entombed by grief, seniors who want to embrace life and people who simply want to find inner relaxation by getting in touch with their inner being. “In our lives we have issues asking to be understood, given a new direction or healing. I reconnect you with your intuition and go with you on an inner journey of what wants to be seen and understood in order for you to feel at peace. It’s not hocus-pocus. Everyone can benefit by a guided massage or an energy reading, even the sceptics. If you have an issue that needs clarifying, I’m here to help”.

BYRON BAY RETREAT – DARWIN TREATMENTS Emerging from Rago’s Massage Bright, beautiful and beckoning, a place to be heard and healed; this is Rago’s massage and reading room where white, cotton linen cradles every corner, candles innocently flicker and you can free your mind and body. I did. Rago closed her eyes, let her hands see, opened her consciousness to a higher realm, tapped into my tension and its ‘story’ and questioned what it was that needed to feel whole again. Her grandfather’s gift was unveiled. After 90 minutes I emerged from what felt like a bath of marshmallows with a supple body that oozed a delicious lightness. Must book again, but this time for Rago’s Divine Organic Reiki Facial Treatment. Guided Energy Reading In a Guided Energy Reading, or metaphysical counselling, our mind, personality and issues are read. Rago looks at our daily life, future and potential and allows us to fall into the space of ‘being’; to help us realise that our virtues are still in tact but just covered up and forgotten due to the layers of beliefs (roles, duties and expectations) we’ve inherited or collated since childhood. “Your mind is a collection of all of this, but your mind is not you”, insists Rago, who’s determined to help us find contentment again within the rat race and our common focus on work in Darwin. Retreats With Rago These six-day Meditation, Guided Energy Reading and Massage Retreats allow us to retreat back into our selves, to discover who we are again. “I take you into an inner realm of your essential qualities, to help you remember and reacknowledge the true you. We learn to help dismantle the layers of issues of our clients and also learn to give massage guided by your inner senses, to reach out to the higher intelligence of the universe and invite healing from a deeper place”. Rago’s gift does make you wonder what the world would be like if we all couldn’t see. She gives us inner eyes to find out.

You had several insights about Tracy and I, as individuals and a couple, that were spot on and things just went from strength to strength

for us. We moved in then married. Many

thanks Rago again for playing an important role in our life”. (Craig Hawke, Director Integrated Development Australia)

It’s the only one in the heart of Darwin with the best of both worlds; medical and dental. Darwin City Medical Centre functions like a well-oiled machine with experts from both fields who have an innate compassion for and rapport with patients. Dr Albert Tonga, Dr Ajay Naidu, Dr Anna Huang and Dr Nancy Saunders-Clay, together with their nursing and administrative staff, are all a much-sought after breed in the health industry. Dr Tonga and Dr Naidu established the Darwin City Medical Centre in 2008 as a General Practice and since opening City Dentists (NT) in 2010 both practices have been humming with a regular and diverse clientele. They offer a wide range of services from travel medicine, skin checks, pre-employment medicals and women’s health (with a full-time practice nurse) to whitening, fillings, crowns, veneers and root canals. “Patients happily re-book with us which just reinforces the calibre of professionals we have working

here”, assures Rere Tonga, the Centre’s Practice Manager. Dr Tonga is currently working towards his next fellowship with London’s Royal Society of Medicine and is the Centre’s ‘teddy bear’; a magnet for young patients who need a hearty smile. He’s a man of strong family values and enormous Territory pride that encompasses 30 years of practice and patients from Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Darwin are still making the journey in to see him. The very affable Dr Naidu is also a family man, who’s “here for the long term” and forever enthused by Darwin’s opportunities personally and professionally, and loves his cricket. So be sure to ask this accomplished, adept doctor whom he supports. Dr Huang comes from a diverse background having lived in Taiwan, Canada, the United States and now has her Australian citizenship. It’s desperately needed time out for some, a saving grace for others, while most simply can’t wait to get there. We’re talking about Hair ‘n’ Play, the antidote for every mum who says, “I’ve got no time,” “I’ve got kids” or, “It doesn’t matter.” Well, it does matter. You matter. And, here’s why. “It’s important to still feel beautiful after having children,” insists owner/manager of Hair ‘n’ Play, Jo Mufale. “I know, having three kids, how time is spread so thinly but was smacked with the realization that little things like making yourself feel good again are absolutely essential and healthy. Besides, if we waited for our husbands to tell us, we could be waiting years!” bursts Jo, a successful, down to earth hairdresser who’s been in the game two decades and delivers damn good service. For a start, Jo’s one-stop-shop covers hair and beauty, so you can get your nails done, wax the mono-brow or unwind with a massage. You have time. “We get everything done at once while you’re colour is processing and you’re going through your list of chores that can wait. “When I had kids I could never get my hair done but everything I got caught out with as a mum I’ve cured here at Hair ‘n’ Play,” assures Jo, who’s hardwired to give clients affordable services and spoil them rotten. However, not only can you waltz out of Jo’s Coconut Grove salon feeling human again, you can bring your kids without apologising if they cry, miss the potty or unleash a tantrum that reaches new octaves. Hair ‘n’ Play is family-friendly with a fully supervised play area. Hallelujah! Jo’s play room is completely decked out with everything newborns to 10 year olds need from a cubby house, doll’s house, face painting,

Eat less, do more. And there it is.

The crux of every diet book on the market explained in simple terms that everyone can understand. If I have to suffer through one more speech about crazy diet fads, I’ll take the vow of silence and move to the nearest temple.

It seems that today most people would rather search for the elusive ‘golden ticket’ to weight loss rather than actually doing something about it. Eat less, do more. The thing with diet plans is every single version, whether it be Paleo, Fasting, Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig have one principle in common, restriction of the calories you consume on a daily basis and

exercising more will lead to weight loss- cue the light bulb. Bing!

either because just like dieting, it must be something that is sustainable.

It’s up to the individual to chose which method suits their lifestyle and which method they think they can follow sustainably. Forget the propaganda some advocates of these methods may use and think logically asking yourself “Can I do this for a long time?”. Changing old eating habits is hard, and despite what popular television may report, it doesn’t happen overnight.

Far too often logic and common sense seems to be forgotten when it comes to getting fit and healthy and staying that way. Make the next diet and exercise change you make the last one, by choosing a method that is practical and sensible. Stay strong.

Eat less, do more. Doing more can be as simple as going for a walk every morning to joining your local gym. The take home point here is to do more. That means more than you are currently doing right now! It doesn’t mean flogging yourself day in and day out in the gym

Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park

Canoeing in Katherine Gorge

Darwin to Litchfield National Park and Katherine Depart Darwin early, heading towards the township of Batchelor, before entering magnificent Litchfield National Park. Make a stop at the magnetic termite mounds before cooling off with a swim at Buley Rockhole and Florence Falls. After a short drive, a 400 metre walk to the Tolmer Falls viewing platform will reward you with magnificent views of the falls and surrounding landscape. Finally, make your way to Wangi Falls where you can enjoy a picnic lunch or famous mango cheesecake from the café, then take a swim in the beautiful plunge pool before continuing on towards Katherine. Katherine and surrounds After breakfast, head to Pine Creek - steeped in gold mining history followed by a cool dip at the stunning Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park (the turn-off is only 3kms south of Pine Creek). Then make your way to Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge and join a two or four hour cruise soaking up the beauty of the sheer cliffs and rock art, which make this place such a popular attraction. Meander through the Visitor Centre after the cruise, where you will find cultural displays, souvenirs and a restaurant. On your way back in to Katherine, enjoy an indigenous cultural experience or explore the town’s various galleries before taking a refreshing swim in the town’s thermal pools. A short way out of town is the Cutta Cutta Caves National Park where you will marvel at the karst limestone formations. Finish the day by indulging in a stockman’s camp tucker night for a real outback experience. Katherine to Kakadu National Park Head north towards Kakadu National Park making a stop at Leliyn (Edith Falls) for a photo opportunity or a swim, weather permitting. Make a stop at Pine Creek for refreshments and a visit to the historic Railway Station. Next stop is Cooinda, where you can visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre, shaped like a pig nosed turtle, and take a leisurely cruise on world-famous Yellow Water Billabong guided by the night stars. Kakadu National Park A sunrise Yellow Water Billabong cruise is a great start to the day with the waterway a hive of activity with wildlife. After enjoying a hearty breakfast, head to Nourlangie to explore walks around this picturesque area with centuries old rock art - there is evidence of occupation in this area stretching back tens of thousands of years. Continue on to the Bowali Visitor Centre for detailed information on the park, then catch a stunning Top End sunset at Ubirr before overnighting in Jabiru or the South Alligator region. Kakadu to Darwin Departing Kakadu, detour to the Mamukala Wetlands bird observatory to witness abundant birdlife. Take a refreshing break at the iconic Bark Hut Inn before enjoying a cruise on the Mary River wetlands. Finally, Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve is a remnant of early attempts to produce rice on the Adelaide River flood plains. Today it provides an important refuge for wildlife and is a worthwhile stop off on your way back to Darwin.

CRUISING THROUGH EUROPE IN

ALL-INCLUSIVE Luxury river cruises are becoming increasingly popular with 1000s of Australians embarking on river cruises across Europe each year. Soaking up the wonderful cultural and historical ambience, making lifetime friends and memories, witnessing breathtaking natural wonders, extraordinary architecture in the comfort of a luxurious floating hotel is all part of the experience of a lifetime.

Many want to enjoy their golden years or hard earned holidays visiting far flung places in style. Dining in castles, lunching with locals, and cruising the grand waterways of Europe through natural wonders and man-made masterpieces. Scenic Tours offer a range of river cruises through Europe, and for those wanting to experience it in class, they are the first port of call. Darwin couple Rosemary and Eugene Scaturchio are excited about their cruise through France next year. Joining others in the lap of luxury, Rosemary and Eugene will experience the country’s rich history and culture whilst sailing along the Seine in northern France and the Saône and Rhône rivers further south. They will also enjoy the waterways of Bordeaux that’s famous for its vineyards and châteaux, Gothic churches, and 18th century merchant mansions. “We are very excited,” Rosemary said. “We are doing three consecutive river cruises of France next May. We are really looking forward to seeing the Somme battlefields and visiting the Australian National Memorial near VillersBretonneux, a memorial commemorating Australian soldiers killed during the First World War. It’s going to be amazing and I know from firsthand experience that we will be very well looked after.” Rosemary said that next year’s cruise would be the fourth trip they have been on with Scenic Tours. “We’ve already enjoyed Canada/ Alaska, South America and The Rhine River Cruise, Amsterdam – Budapest and onto The Black Sea. Then overland to Gallipoli and onto Instanbul. We tend to go every other year so we can really enjoy the experience; we take our time and truly savour it. We’ve seen so many amazing things thanks to Scenic Tours.” The couple said they have made many firm friendships from their times abroad. “We have an annual reunion with some of the people we met from our trip to Canada, and we keep in touch with quite a few from our journey to South America. It really is the case that we’ve gained some lasting life time friendships, some have even visited us here in Darwin.” So you would recommend Scenic Tours? “Absolutely!” she said. “They give you an 108 DarwinLife Magazine

amazing experience, really look after you – the food, itinerary, everything is fantastic. Once you’re there you don’t have a care in the world, they take care of everything for you. They can appear to be a bit pricey, but it is very good value for money. There are no hidden costs and you tour in luxury, have the most knowledgeable guides, most idyllic places and you get to experience things you just wouldn’t with competitors or if you were on your own.” Rosemary said, “I’m secretly hoping that we get the same Cruise Director that Eugene and I had on our Rhine cruise. He was so much fun, energy plus, had great knowledge and nothing was too much trouble – he was a highlight of that particular river cruise.” Fiona Garner-Hicks from TravelManagers, who Rosemary books all her tours and travel through, said she has definitely noticed an increase in those wanting to cruise the waterways of Europe. “I’ve had a number of enquiries for river cruising within Europe, this is a growing market for travellers wanting to spend a little more time and enjoy Europe in a leisurely manner. Scenic Tours would always be my first choice for Europe river cruising as I know my clients will enjoy the luxury allinclusive experience they offer. The feedback I’ve received from returned clientele is no detail is ever missed with Scenic Tours and I would highly recommend Scenic Tours if you are considering a Europe river cruise in the future.” Scenic Tours’ Robert Kalemba said the company has launched an even better itinerary for their river cruises in response to its growing popularity. “We are just amazed at the feedback we are getting,” he said. “Our all-inclusive luxury Europe river cruising program for next year features brand new and exciting itineraries in Europe, France and Russia.” “As an added bonus if you book a European river cruise and pay your deposit before this October, you can fly free return to Europe! This offer is strictly limited and may sell out, so we strongly advise to get in early to avoid disappointment,” he said. “The ultimate experience of all-inclusive luxury on board their magnificent fleet of Scenic

‘Space-Ships’ has been crafted for you. All activities, entertainment, dining and beverages, unforgettable shore excursions and even airport transfers, tips and gratuities are included.” Robert said Scenic Tours are holding free information sessions on their 2015 luxury Europe, France and Russia River Cruising program. “This is a must for anybody wanting to learn more about our all-inclusive luxury cruises and tours along Europe’s majestic waterways,” he said. “If you can’t make the information session you can learn all about it from the comfort of your own home by joining in our webinar sessions. There will also be additional special offers for event or webinar attendees. ” Webinar sessions Europe River Cruising: Wednesday 14 May at 11.30am France River Cruising: Friday 16 May at 11.30am Free Information Session at Vibe Hotel Monday 16 June 12pm and 7pm - Europe River Cruising 1.30pm and 5.30pm - France & Russia River Cruising Robert said that if you want to travel in allinclusive luxury, then Scenic Tours is for you. “We have over 28 years experience in delivering incredible holidays and it is underpinned by the strength of our people, product, knowledge and service. CAR OF THE MONTH

Ford F100 WHAT IS YOUR NAME? Tim and Allana Bryan VEHICLE COLOUR, BRAND AND YEAR? Matt black, Ford F100, 1953.

WHAT MODIFICATIONS HAVE YOU DONE? It has been restored to its original specification other than being lowered and paintwork changed.

WHAT WAS THE CONDITION WHEN YOU FIRST PURCHASED IT? A farmer originally owned it until I purchased it from him in 1990. Having been parked in a barn for 10 years it was not running and in poor condition.

ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE CAR? This was the first 53 F100 in Australia, it was brought over on Ford’s 50th Anniversary. Ford kept this car as a “parts car“ for a number of years.

HAS IT WON ANY AWARDS? Yes - Shannon’s Extravaganza. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR STAND OUT MEMORY IN THIS CAR? Restoring and rebuilding the Flat Head V8. I had to sell the car in the late 90s. 12 years later, a friend saw it and though of me. “A friend of mine has a car for sale that I think you might like…” he said. When I saw the photo I said “That’s my car!!” So I am happy it is home again. I just love driving it, it sounds so good and everyone loves it!

A DV E N T U R E S C O N T I N U E S Craig Hand lives for his next adventure, but his heart was stolen by a tribe of natives in Papua New Guinea after his first solo voyage crossing Torres Strait in a small fishing boat in 2008. Also known as Crackers, Craig has been around the world three times, twice around Australia and up and down it 20 times. But with all his adventures, his heart lies with a remote tribe of Sibidiri in the western province of Papua New Guinea. He set up the charity Friends of PNG after his first visit and has been back a couple of time pitching in to help the community and taking donated items and goods he has purchased himself. “The tribe had no electricity, no phone, no roads, no tinned food, no shops, no doctors, no dentists, no government, no court records, no money,” he said. “They have not seen a car, they had no comforts of home.” Craig struck up a friendship with the King and the elders who asked him to help their remote village. He offered the tribe everything he did not need for his return voyage, including water and fuel containers, food, fishing equipment, a 114 DarwinLife Magazine

solar light, rope and even gave the King’s son the shirt off his own back. “A story about a young sick child being paddled out by dugout canoe and eventually transferred to Cairns and then Brisbane in Australia days later for medical help inspired the creation of the Friends of PNG,” he said. Upon leaving, Craig vowed to return with much needed medical supplies and the tools and equipment to connect the tribe with the rest of the world. “On my three day trip through rough seas and a squall with 32 knot winds with gusts crossing back over Torres Strait, I realised that no one would help them, they were too remote,” he said. “As I enjoyed my time there, I decided to go back for more adventures and also try to help them.” Since the first time, Craig has been back twice with the most recent being in 2012. He has organised successful fundraisers, taken medical supplies and goods and set up emergency radio contact with Thursday Island Port Authority in Cairns. “It was quite an adventure. As well as catching huge fish and being stalked by

crocodiles, I have been told I hold the Australian mud flat sitting record as I got stranded one day when the tide went out in the Gulf of Carpentaria and didn’t come back for 8 days!” he said. Craig said the people in Sibidiri knew he was coming the last time. “A Chief Head Hunting Welcoming Ceremony was organised for me by the tribe,” he said. “I was not game to blink all day in case I missed something, it was an amazing spectacle of celebrations and traditional round dancing with kundu drums and bamboo flutes.” Craig said that he towed his boat up to Darwin from Lismore on his return. “I continued collecting donated goods from various towns and cities along the way, filling up my car and the little red boat in the process with hand tools, clothing, medical supplies and educational books,” he said. “The goods were put into a container in Cairns and sent to Papua New Guinea by SeaSwift and the donated goods were distributed by a web of islanders and tribes people. buyer’s GUIDE Owning your own home is the great Australian dream. But it is also can be daunting the first time you buy your own home. The thought of entering into a new realm of finance, solicitors, reports and negotiations is a little overwhelming, to say the least. Before you start looking for a property or land, you need to make sure you know your financial options in side out. It’s common for first homebuyers to start looking at homes, fall in love with one and then find out that they can’t afford it. So save yourself the disappointment and do your research first. Do you have a thorough understanding of expenses such as insurances, rates, and body corporate fees? Ask yourself how much can you realistically afford and still maintain a semblance of a normal life? It’s important to shop around, ask lots of questions and think about what you are prepared, and can afford, to commit to. Then check into the First Home Owner Grant. It is $25,000 for first homebuyers purchasing newly constructed home, or $12,000 for purchases of established properties. With removal of the stamp duty payment, the application process has become much simpler. Once you’ve secured you’re funding - then it’s the roller coaster ride of finding your dream home! It’s important to find an agent you can trust. Don’t be afraid to speak to a number of agents. A good agent will be able to recommend skilled building surveyors and pest inspections and assist you with the process of buying your home. In order to assist potential buyers with this process we have gone to the experts for advice. Over the next few pages we interviewed a bank, conveyancer, real estate agent, property developer and more. Their advice may help you before you decide to take the plunge.

Real Estate Central

nothin’ wrong with retiring rich

Stick With Me

She calls herself, “a crazy chick from the desert.” She grew up on a sheep ’n’ wheat farm, worked in an opal mine and has also given tourism a spin in Alice. Belinda Tonkin (BT) might be a little wild and woolly but she’s darn well switched on when it comes to property. In fact, BT has a solid portfolio, stretching from Adelaide to Alice, and a handful of mates “who’ll be wealthy if they stick with me,” she beams. BT’s buying and selling prowess not only impressed friends, but also Alice agent Caela Zenith from The Professionals who asked why she wasn’t in the property business; BT pondered, “I had more properties than her and knew a bucket load about real estate… Why wasn’t I in the business?”

The Lot

BT is now as property adviser with Real Estate Central (REC) and works with specialists in residential properties, auctions, property management, finance and a team fitted out for REC projects. “We’ve got the lot here mate”, assures BT. “Why would you go anywhere else?” Real Estate Central is also branching into investment advising. “Myself and Leigh Arnold are flat out, the response is fantastic and we welcome more and will make time for everyone.”

What’s The Market Doing In Darwin?

“The market has really picked up in the last two months right across the board,” says BT. There are also many buyers keen to invest. “People out there are earning good money, there’s new people coming to town who are also getting off the rental roundabout. Plus, it’s cheaper to pay off a mortgage than rent. Low interest rates and good bank deals have been a strong influence and increased consumer confidence. With the RBA looking at keeping rates down, that confidence could sit tight until Christmas,” reinforces BT, who’s hoping for substantial movement in Darwin’s property market over the next 18 months.

And, The Most Common First Home Buyer Mistake…

“Not being thorough with your research,” says BT. So call her, her colleague Daniel Harris or the Real Estate Central team, because they all want to make you rich. “It’s not much fun doing it on your own,” says the woman who has an “itch to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.” BT’s pretty convinced Darwin is it.

First Home Buyer Tips

• Sort out your finances • Buy new rather than old ($25 000 first home buyer incentive for new verses $12500 for old.) • Work out your 5 to 10 year plan with your first home. • Talk to a financial advisor, accountant or investment advisor about your goals; like turning your home into an investment, structuring your loan differently and how long you’ll be in Darwin.

Stamp duty When purchasing your home or unit, you need to enlist the expert assistance of a licensed conveyancer. A conveyancer protects your interests in the legal transfer of real estate from the seller to you.

As your conveyancer, All Conveyancing, will go through the title to the property and the contract with you, provide you with plain English interpretation of the contract, prepare all other necessary documents for you to sign, order any inspection reports on the property, and liaise with the seller’s conveyancer and the agent on your behalf. Inspection reports on an existing property that you may choose to have (depending on the age and type of property) include termite, building, electrical, plumbing and pool function reports. All Conveyancing will also check the settlement figures, book in your bank for settlement and check the payments with you. We attend the settlement on your behalf and phone you once the property is in your name. All Conveyancing has been a leader in the field of conveyancing for over 17 years, and the owner, Kristin Bannerman, has been in the industry for over 30 years

If this is your first home then, on 4 December 2012, the First Home Owner Grant scheme was amended to provide eligible first homeowners with a grant in relation to the purchase or construction of a home with an eligibility threshold capped at $600,000, i.e. the total purchase price of the property. The commencement date of an eligible transaction is for a contract to purchase or construct a home, the date when the contract is made or an owner builder, the date the laying of the foundations commenced. If the commencement date of the eligible transaction is on or after 4 December 2012, the amount of the grant is $12 000 if the home is an established home in the urban area, or otherwise its $25 000. An established home is one that has been previously sold or occupied, and is lawfully fit for occupation. A home is a building, permanently affixed to the land that may lawfully be used as

a principal place of residence, such as a newly constructed or established home, townhouse, villa, unit etc. An urban area means all land located wholly within the boundaries of Darwin, Palmerston or Litchfield municipalities, Wagait Shire, Darwin Waterfront Precinct, ‘prescribed area’ for the Darwin Rates Act, and any other area prescribed by regulation. You must commence occupation of the home within 12 months of completion of the eligible transaction, or a longer period if approved by the Commissioner, and reside there for a continuous period of not less than six months.

your first home Becoming a homeowner is the dream of many Australians, but we all know that getting into the property market for the first time isn’t easy. That’s why a plan, good saving habits and realistic expectations are important.

It’s not just a home loan. It’s bigger than that. It’s about a place to raise your family… the community you’re going to be part of. It’s about setting yourself up. Yes, banking is about money. But it’s about something bigger too. It’s about the good that money can bring. We know full well the difference a bank can make. We know that successful customers make for a successful community. And that’s why we set out to make both. So yes, we could just care about money. We could just see our customers as numbers. And we could think that a loan is nothing but an interest rate. Your first home may not be the house you have dreamt of, and it may not be located in your favourite suburb. But that’s okay - they don’t call it your first home for nothing. The most important thing is to start saving for a deposit. Because the bigger your deposit, the less you need to borrow, the lower your mortgage repayments will be and the more choice you have to find the home you really want. Set a budget No matter which way you look at it, to save for a home deposit you’ll need to set a budget. Review the amount of money coming in (your income) and list all your regular expenses. Remember to leave a little extra aside for unexpected costs and the occasional treat. Any money left over at the end of the month could be put aside for your deposit. Eliminate debt The less money you owe elsewhere, the better position you’ll be in for a home loan. Be aware of extra debt such as credit cards, store cards, car loans and personal loans – the interest you’re paying can add up fast. Little things add up Simple changes to your spending patterns can mean big savings with minimal impact on your lifestyle. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars every year just by packing your lunch, turning off the lights, avoiding takeaway and shopping around for the best price on various products and services. Be realistic Even though some lenders will let you borrow up to 100% of a property’s value, it’s wise to save as much as you can. Whilst you might get a loan without saving much of a deposit – this can put you under pressure when it comes time to make your repayments. Know what you’re entitled to As a first home buyer, you may be entitled to a government grant to increase your borrowing capacity. To find out if you are eligible, please visit your relevant State Revenue Office website. Talk to your lender Even if you’ve just started saving, it pays to research the different mortgages available as well as the cost of homes in the area you want to live. Before you start actively looking for your new home, your Bendigo Bank lender can tell you how much you can afford to borrow. You’ll need to provide proof of your income and savings history (eg pay slips and bank statements). Check your Calculations Bendigo Bank also provides informative online calculators that can help you calculate your loan repayments, future savings when making additional repayments, the estimated stamp duty, plus the benefit of a budget planner and savings estimator for interest bearing accounts. To utilise these calculators please visit www.bendigobank.com.au Budget for the unexpected Before you decide to leap into the property market, make sure you’re aware of all the unexpected costs. Don’t forget to include home loan application fees, legal fees, mortgage insurance, stamp duty and home and contents insurance when doing your final calculations. For further advise, drop into your local Bendigo Bank branch and speak to one of your friendly local staff. DUE

DILI GENCE

is your friend, not homework

Purchasing a residential property is one of the most strategic steps towards wealth creation a person can take in their lifetime, according to O’Donoghues First National Real Estate Principal, Jeremy O’Donoghue.

“This means you should take every precaution possible to ensure the property you are buying is in good condition before you sign the contract of sale,” Jeremy said. “Many buyers feel overwhelmed by the time, effort and research that needs to be put into performing due diligence. However, due diligence should be your best friend, not your homework, as it allows you to gain an in-depth view of the property you’re buying.” Attending an open inspection is the first vital step in determining whether a home is the right fit. While many would consider this obvious, a great many purchases are made without an inspection taking place, particularly by Australians buying investment properties overseas. “Before signing the contract of sale, you need to purchase a professional building and pest inspection report to make sure the property is structurally

and internally sound. If you’re purchasing overseas, try to arrange for somebody you trust to inspect the home and location to confirm its suitability.” said Jeremy. “Imagine if you spent thousands of dollars on a home only to find it will require thousands more to fix termite damaged floors. A professional inspection can help you to identify any problems a home might have before you buy it and save you from this situation occurring”. It’s important to also establish that the property you’re buying is appropriately priced. In some cases, it’s prudent to obtain a professional valuation, especially if circumstances make it difficult to establish a reasonable expectation. An independent valuation can inform you of the potential resale value of the property, as well as rental return, should you choose to turn the property into rental accommodation

in the future. According to Jeremy, another essential part of due diligence is to ensure you have the necessary funds to complete the purchase. “Will you be able to pay the deposit for the home at the time you sign the contract of sale? Can you pay the balance of the property price by the time settlement date rolls around?” “It’s a good idea to get your finance pre-approved, in writing, before you begin searching for a home. Not only can this help to make the home buying process a lot less stressful, it can also give you greater confidence during negotiations” said Jeremy.

W hat you need to consider when building

y o u r

first home The stars have aligned, and there is no better time for would-be first homebuyers to seriously consider homeownership. We say that because housing affordability in the Northern Territory is unlikely to improve in the near future and as a direct result of Reserve Bank of Australia’s cash rate, and therefore interest rates, being at their lowest level in 50 years.

There are a few issues that a first homebuyer must consider prior to realising the great Australian dream of home ownership. The first issue is whether to build your own home or buy an existing home. Both the Federal Government and the NT Government provide financial incentives to persons who are building their first home. Various conditions apply depending where you build and the price of the house and land. Full details of the grants available are on the NT Government Treasury website. These incentives make building a new home an even more affordable and attractive proposition. Building a new home also means you are starting with a blank canvas so you can design a home specifically to suit your needs. Many builders have a myriad of standard designs, which are generally readily adaptable to suit your needs, your block of land and your environment. A new home must also achieve at least a Star Energy Rating and will provide cheaper electricity and gas bills than older homes. Given the size of the investment in building a new home, there are laws that provide protection to a homeowner. These protections include warranties that are implied into building contracts that require the builder to warrant that they will build in a proper manner, use suitable materials and build a home that is fit for human habitation. The law also requires building indemnity insurance be taken out in the client’s name which protects homeowners in the unlikely event that the builder dies, disappears or goes insolvent. Having decided to build your new home you then need to speak to a builder. Having a new home built by a professional builder is generally a happy and fulfilling experience, particularly

if you are conscious of the primary rules of building. • Be aware if a builder has a particular area of expertise. Project builders have many ‘standard’ plans to choose from, many of which can be inspected at a display village. Given the economies of scale, project builders are generally price competitive. Alternatively, if money is less of an issue, you can use a builder to build a one-off home specifically designed to suit your lifestyle and needs. • Inspect past work of builders and if possible speak to previous clients. This will give you a good guide as to what you can expect. • Discuss your plans in detail with your builder to ensure they understand your requirements. • Check your builder has a licence that permits the type of work you are asking them to do. The Office of the Building Practitioners Board, the government department responsible for administering building licences, can assist you. • Make sure your financial arrangements are sufficient to meet your expectations. It is absolutely imperative you make sure you can access the required level of finance. Your bank manager will be able to provide you with your lending power and it is important that you keep them informed of your intentions.

You’ve purchased your first home? You’re all moved in. You have a backyard now, and the dry season is here. It’s time to start landscaping, right? Have a dig around in a few different places of your garden so you know what you’re up against. Plants need good soil to grow healthy. You need to buy good topsoil, and while you’re at it mix it with some organic compost. The ideal landscape provides your family with recreation, privacy, and pleasure - even as those needs change over time. What’s more, the landscape should - and will - add to your home’s value and its curb appeal in all seasons, especially fortunate at selling time. Think of designing a landscape for the bare lot surrounding your new home as an adventure in creativity. Perhaps your property needs only a few small, easily do-able projects to make it more attractive. Either way, it’s important to consider how each change will relate to the big picture. Stand back from time to time to see the entire landscape and how each part fits into it.

A pleasing mix of trees, shrubs, flowers, paving, and outdoor furniture creates an intimate landscape that invites relaxation. At any step in your decision-making, don’t hesitate to ask for expert advice from our friendly professional team at Allora Gardens Nursery. When you reach the final design and are ready to begin the actual work, continue

to ask for help when you need it. Or better still let the team at Allora Gardens complete the project for you. After all, landscaping is a practical yet personal process, and you want the outcome to be wonderful. Trends such as butterfly gardening, herb and vegetables, palms and cycads, trees and ornamental grasses can be the icing on the cake in keeping the whole process fresh, appealing, and exciting. Dial Before

You Dig

There are hundreds of thousands of kilometres of hidden underground pipes and cables that carry our essential services to households and businesses around the country each and every day of the year.

T he E ssential F irst Step You do not want to damage vital underground infrastructure during your next home improvement project. Dial Before You Dig is a unique partnership between Australia’s communications, electricity, gas and water providers, plus many other owners of underground pipes and cables. Dial Before You Dig essentially plays a middleman role in safe excavation. You provide them with the location of your planned excavation and they then send those details to the affected asset owners. The asset owners then send you information on the location of pipes and cables often within a few hours.

Lodging a standard enquiry is free and using the simple online service enables you to access the service 24/7. Damaging underground infrastructure can result in large financial penalties, injury and in the worst-case scenario, even death so it is vital that you use the service for every project. Remember, everyone has a duty of care around underground pipes and cables when digging or excavating. In observing your duty of care, remember: • Underground network information should be sought in advance to construction activities. • Proceed with caution and excavate

by hand when assets are located or when working close to underground networks. • If damage to an underground asset occurs, you must advise the asset owner immediately

Whatever your next home renovation project, if it involves digging, you need to use Dial Before You Dig. If it is a new front fence, a new driveway or if you are putting in a pool visit www.1100. com.au or call the national call centre on 1100 during business hours.
