Darwin, the Northern Territory’s capital, is a multicultural and cosmopolitan port city that sits on a harbour twice the size of Sydney’s.

Eight thousand years of annual monsoon cycles dictate the Top End’s swing between wet and dry seasons.
R
eferred to as the ‘wet’ season, the months inclusive of November to April are characterised by increased humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The Indigenous inhabitants of this region characterise the wet season by the changes in seasonal fruit and flowers, lush greenery and flowing water, with the weather greatly influencing their campsites and traditional food sourcing. The ‘dry’ season, between May and
October, provided opportunity for the nomadic Indigenous communities to move freely and partake in ceremonial activities. The biting cold of the Central regions during this season sees the mercury drop below zero degrees through the evening. The changing of the seasons in October sees an increase of wildlife within the region with animals breeding, the emergence of hibernating reptiles and an increase of native fauna looking for the fresh fruit and seeds provided by the incoming wet season.

Darwin has plenty to offer travellers, whether it’s an adventure-filled escape or a relaxing break with all the creature comforts.
No matter your holiday preference, there are ‘musts’ for every visitor to Darwin that should not be missed. The famous outdoor markets at Mindil beach (April-October only) or the Parap markets offering fresh, local cuisine and dishes from nearby South East Asia and beyond, combined with street performers, live entertainment and market stalls offering artisan items are compulsory! The Museum and Art Gallery NT is a great starting point for a cultural and historic journey through the region. The Aboriginal art collection is a highlight, as is the entire room dedicated to Cyclone Tracy. Resourcefulness and ingenuity are on display at the annual Beer Can Regatta. Primarily made from aluminium cans with the addition of plastic soft drink bottles and cartons, participants race their boats, measuring from 1 to 12 metres long through ‘The Battle of Mindil’. Competitors fit their dinghys, kayaks, cruise liners and yachts with makeshift weaponry ranging from fire hoses to flour bombs to ensure their victory. The winner is the team that locates an underwater item hidden somewhere through the course. Thrills, spills, hilarity and hijinks ensue as teams battle it out for the glory of ‘Beer Can Boat Builder’ champion.
Now a 42 year old tradition, the Lions Beer Can Regatta draws thousands of spectators to Mindil Beach every July.
Conceived in 1974 as a means to combat litter in the area, the Lions’ committee has grown this event into an annual spectacular. From humble beginnings as a singular race, the event now hosts four different categories, market stalls and on-land activities. Families can band together for tug-of- war competitions and beach races as well as the ever-popular thong-throwing competition. Sporty types can display their golfing prowess with a hole-in-one challenge, attempting to land a golf ball into a bucket-toting dinghy 70 metres off shore. As far as spectator sports go, this is one event not to miss when you are in Darwin!

Australia is home to spectacular viewpoints for soaking in the final rays of the day. With expansive seascapes and landscape horizons, the Northern Territory offers a variety of sensational hues as the sun sets on another day in the Top End.

Recommended vantage points include the beautiful lawn-fringed beach at Cullen Bay, East Point Reserve, the Nightcliff Foreshore or the famous Mindil Beach. For those from the east coast of Australia, seeing the sunset over the ocean is something quite unique and completely unforgettable.

The Nightcliff foreshore was the site of Royal Australian Air Force camps with spotlights and large guns used to defend Darwin from bombing during the Second World War.
D
uring 1941, a naval outpost including a large concrete artillery outpost bunker was established on the headland. Various other defence facilities were constructed inland as large numbers of military personnel moved into the area. Nightcliff is close to Rapid Creek - well known for the weekend markets for fresh produce, and the adjacent northern suburbs of Millner and Coconut Grove. Nightcliff has arguably become one of Darwin’s most popular suburbs, as it is mostly situated directly on the coastal fringe. Along the foreshore there is Nightcliff Jetty, Nightcliff Beach, Nightcliff Swimming Pool and sevenoutdoor exercise stations, as well as two free public tennis courts. The foreshore itself incorporates access to mangrove coastline and the beach, and features many historical WWII sites with information boards installed along the length of the path. Nearby, the Nightcliff Markets run from 6am-2pm every Sunday in Pavonia Way. The stalls at the markets are mainly food and drinks, but you will also find arts and crafts, massage, tarot, and much more.

The Deckchair Cinema is one of Australia’s most iconic outdoor cinemas. Thanks to a committed group of volunteers and members of the Darwin Film Society this independent cinema has been proudly screening a diverse and unique mix of films for over 20 years.
The Deckchair Cinema’s stunning harbour-side location, tropical gardens and spectacular sunsets create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere perfect for pre-film dinner and drinks. The Aviation Historical Society of the Northern Territory was established in 1976 by a small group of enthusiasts who sought to preserve aviation relics salvaged after the destruction of Cyclone Tracy.
HERITAGE CENTRE
The original museum, first opened to the public in 1988 on a pre WWII Navy victualing yard building leased from the NT Government and is now used by the Society as a storage and restoration facility. Negotiations were carried out for some time between the Society, the United States Air Force & the Northern Territory Government to obtain a Boeing B-52 bomber and to build a museum to house and display it. This was achieved in June 1990 when the new Darwin Aviation Museum was officially opened with

a fully refurbished B-52G bomber on permanent loan from the USAF. This is only 1 of 2 B-52 bombers to be available on display anywhere in the world outside of the USA. The name was changed in September 1994 to the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, which placed more emphasis on the pioneering men and women who since 1919 have helped in the development of the Northern Territory through aviation. There are 19 aircraft on display, as well as 38 major displays, relics of crashed aircraft, and 21 engines.

The exhibitions are being continually updated by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers of the Aviation Heritage Society of the Northern Territory, a nonprofit association. Aircraft include a B-25 Mitchell Bomber – one of the few surviving in the world with a proven track record. There are Mirage and Sabre jet fighters, and a Royal Australian Navy Wessex helicopter that assisted in the clean-up of Darwin after Cyclone Tracy struck on Christmas Day 1974. The latest acquisition is an F-111C which arrived by road from Amberley on 16 June 2013.

After direct attacks from more than 64 Japanese air raids in 1942, Darwin has a devastating history as the first mainland site in Australia involved in World War Two (WWII).

The military heritage of the Top End is well preserved within the Northern Territory. While devastation and casualties rolled through the region, the strategic defence that Darwin played during the attacks prevented further attacks on Australian soil. The Darwin Military Museum, open daily at East Point, displays many of the restored pieces used throughout the war period. Extensive displays of military firearms, artillery pieces and detailed historical records showcase the extent of Darwin’s involvement and the positive repercussions of the Armed Forces actions. Many of the original military pieces and landmarks can be found scattered throughout the city, including oil storage tunnels, gun turrets, bunkers and lookout posts. Locals and visitors are drawn to the city on the 19th of February each year to attend ‘Bombing of Darwin’ day commemorative services, acknowledging the sacrifice made by those who lost their lives and maintaining the memory of this dark chapter in Australia’s history.

alking through the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, it is difficult to imagine that a mere 40 years ago, what now stands as hectares on hectares of visual imagery, was then almost entirely destroyed in the wake of Cyclone Tracy. Just 2km from the Darwin CBD and within walking distance from the Skycity Casino, the Gardens are a lasting impression of the vision George Brown planted when he led the restoration following Tracy. Now operated by Friends of the Darwin Botanic Gardens, the site was initially established to introduce and test plants of economic importance for suitability in the harsh tropical climate of the new city. Today the Botanic Gardens hosts a spectacular display of specimens. Set aside a full day to explore Australian and exotic cycads, 450 palm species and admire all eight species of Adansonia (the Baobab tree). Delve through the magical Rainforest Gully before a sojourn at the Plant Display House which homes tropical plants such as orchids, begonias, episcias, and bromeliads. The lush, 48 N T LIFE

Heading South along the Stuart Highway, travellers can stop at the small townships of Batchelor and Adelaide River.
A
t Adelaide River, you will find the Adelaide River War Cemetery. This is Australia’s largest and most somber reminder of the Northern Territory’s role in WWII. While you’re there, board a croc-jumping cruise on the Adelaide River and see massive crocs leap from the water only inches away as they are fed bait from your boat. After the feeding frenzy, enjoy a slow cruise down the river, stopping along the way to appreciate some of the beautiful Wildlife we have here in the Territory. Next stop, Litchfield National Park. This is only an hour and a half drive from Darwin and features a myriad of diverse environments including rugged sandstone escarpments, perennial spring-fed streams, monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls, rockpools and historic ruins. You can spend as little as one day in the park, taking a quick dip in each of the plunge pools and rockholes on the drive through, but to really experience the true beauty of Litchfield, it’s best to camp overnight under the stars.

Melville and Bathurst Islands, known collectively as the Tiwi Islands, lie 80 kilometres north of Darwin, an easy day trip from Darwin via boat or light aircraft. The Tiwi people are world famous for their art, extending from the traditional forms of paintings on bark and canvas to wood carvings, distinctive silk screened cloth, woven accessories and pottery. There are several art galleries on both Melville and Bathurst Island and you are more than welcome to purchase directly from the artists. The Tiwi Islands are also famous for their love of sports, in particular Australian Rules Football. The Tiwi Football Grand Final held in March is a must see if you are in the area at the time.

Cascading and refreshing waterfalls, peaceful swimming holes and rainforest walking tracks blend perfectly in to a relaxing, oasis-style region only an hour’s drive from Darwin.

he Litchfield National Park also boasts exciting four-wheel driving tracks and plunging rock holes for the more adventurous travellers. With natural attractions such as the giant termite mounds, wildlife and stunning landscapes, as well as tourist favourites like the iconic Litchfield Pub, the region holds appeal for a wide range of interest groups. Florence Falls, with plentiful shade and refreshing rock pools or Buley Rockhole, with its cascading falls and deep pools reward bushwalkers with uncrowded access and scenery. For the more adventurous, the Lost City’s impressive freestanding sandstone blocks, or the abandoned Blythe homestead are a favourite for 4WD visitors.

eneath waters dotted with lotus flowers, saltwater crocodiles lurk. Jagged peaks of towering escarpments hide pockets of monsoon rainforests. Waterfalls cascade into pools fringed with paperbarks, pandanus and cycads. You can view the spectacular Jim Jim Falls, browse through a natural gallery of ancient Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr or Nourlangie Rock, or explore the scenic Yellow Water, a billabong teeming with wildlife. Around 1,000 different plant species, a quarter of all Australian freshwater fish species, and over one-third of Australian bird species can be found in the Park. Kakadu is shaped by water, being the catchment area for the South Alligator, East Alligator, Katherine, Roper and Daly rivers. From November to May, waterfalls are at their most spectacular and the lowlands are flooded, attracting millions of migratory birds. The unique and diverse avian life in Kakadu includes jacanas, azure kingfishers, cuckoos, rufous owls, magpie geese, jabirus and more. Kakadu National Park is a place of rugged escarpments, lush wetlands and cascading waterfalls covering over 19,000 square kilometres. The Nature’s Way tourism drive is a great way to explore the park, which runs along the Arnhem Highway to Jabiru, then the Kakadu Highway to Pine Creek. A number of Aboriginal clans still reside within the park. Kakadu is home to one of the largest concentrations of Aboriginal rock art in the world 120 N T LIFE
with galleries at sites like Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock. Other spectacular landmarks include Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls, Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), Jarrangbarnmiu (Koolpin Gorge) and Gunlom (Waterfall Creek). There are many established walking tracks within the Park, with a selection still accessible during the wet season. At the centre of the park is the small mining township of Jabiru, which offers a range of services and accommodation. Another settlement, Cooinda, also offers accommodation, and is located on the banks of Yellow Water, a billabong teeming with migratory birds, saltwater crocodiles and other wildlife. Cruises on Yellow Water depart daily. A visit to Kakadu is best started at the Bowali Visitors Centre near Jabiru or the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre near Cooinda. There is a wide range of accommodation in Kakadu. Along with hotels and resorts are some new properties, including Hawk Dreaming, a safari camp where operators have the exclusive permission from traditional owners to bring visitors onto their land and share an authentic cultural experience. Another of Kakadu’s features is the Gagudju Hotel – a crocodile-shaped complex that is quite amazing when viewed from the air. Resort-style accommodation is also available at Cooinda, a village on the famous Yellow Water Billabong. Family friendly resorts are located in Jabiru as well as at the entrance to Kakadu on the South Alligator River.

NITMILUK (KATHERINE) GORGE has been carved out of the sandstone cliffs that line the katherine river, creating 13 distinct gorges, each featuring its own stunning natural landmarks, and steeped in the culture of the traditional land owners - the jawoyn.

REGION Covering over 480,000 square kilometres of terrain and waterways, the Katherine region is a vast landscape with much to offer. From natural attractions to community events and artistic showcases, there is something on offer every day of the year.
In addition to the popular and well-known landscape destinations such as the Katherine (Nitmiluk) Gorge, the Cutta Cutta caves and the various hot springs, local tourism groups heavily support the cultural and heritage events within the region. Between February and December, the Katherine Community Markets are run on the outskirts of the Katherine township, offering local produce, handmade crafts and various local items. The Katherine Country Music Muster, held annually in June, supports and promotes the development of local talent. The committee also hosts regular community events, promoting the Katherine region as the Northern Territory’s ‘home of country music’. A visit to the Katherine Information Centre will provide you with a vast array of tourist opportunities, from guided tours, local museums, art galleries and local festivals, to the location of hidden gems within the area.

The Katherine Region is not only known for it’s adventure, but also their events. Katherine has an abundance of events which happen throughout the Dry season, from cultural experiences like The Walking with spirits Festival (July) or Barunga Festival (June,) to the prestigious Katherine Show (July,) Katherine Festival (August,) and Katherine Country Music muster (May), plus many regional fishing competitions throughout the year. During the Wet Season, things start to slow down in the Rerritory, but that doesn’t mean you have to. The Katherine Museum is a must, they have a wonderful display of photo’s dating back from the early settlers as well as aboriginal artifacts. If you haven’t had enough history yet, try the Cutta Cutta Caves. They are located only 27km south of Katherine. The cave is a series of limestone caverns dating back 500 million years featuring sparkling columns, pillars and flowstones of calcite crystal. Tours are run each day for one hour. Between October and March tours in the afternoon can be very warm so make sure you pack light.

Maintaining their traditional life, cultural identity and ties to their land, the three thousand Aboriginal inhabitants of the 100,000 square kilometre Arnhem land maintain the region of pristine wilderness.

howcasing the Top End’s pure azure waters, abundance of flora and fauna and strong cultural history, Arnhem Land offers visitors the opportunity to step back to the origins and spiritual culture of our first inhabitants. Accessible only with a permit obtained from the Northern Land Council, visitors can enter Arnhem Land through the main access point situated in Gove (Nhulunbuy), a 90 minute flight east of Darwin. The Gove Peninsula and the Cobourg Peninsula within the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park offer a mosaic of sandy beaches, azure waters, coral reefs and rich marine life. Offering exceptional reef and tropical sports fishing at the northern beaches, and mangrove-lined billabong fishing for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack and other sports fish make this region highly appealing to the keen angler. For the more historical and culturally-inclined visitors, visits to the Victoria Settlement (accessible only by boat and with a permit) present the eerie ruins of a failed British settlement in 1838. Aboriginal art history items can be viewed at one of many Indigenous arts
centres in communities including Maningrida, Nambara and Yirrkala. Alternatively, a visit to the Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) community gives you the opportunity to see artists at work, buy woven items directly from the creator, or join a tour led by an Indigenous guide to Injalak Hill, offering ancient rock art, spectacular scenery and Dreamtime stories. The adventurous visitor can take advantage of the challenging and enjoyable 4x4 access to the region, only possible during peak season (May to October). Visitors should be mindful that registered sacred sites still exist in Arnhem Land and should be treated with utmost respect. Accommodation in the region is bountiful and many are influenced by the ecologically friendly and sustainable attitudes of the surrounding inhabitants. The BanuBanu eco-lodge on the private Bremer Island, an hour’s boat trip north of Nhulunbuy, is a wilderness retreat perfect for those looking for comfort and peace, while the Seven Spirit Bay Wilderness Lodge, located on the remote northern tip of the region, is the ultimate escape for both relaxation and adventure.

S U R R O U N D S The panoramic landscapes of the West MacDonnell Ranges are easily accessed from Alice Springs. Each of the West MacDonnell Ranges’ chasms and gorges has its own defining character and scenery. Simpsons Gap sports a permanent pool and rock wallabies live in the gap’s rocky ridges. Standley Chasm lights up in fiery colours reflected by the overhead sun at midday. Picturesque swimming holes such as Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge and Redbank Gorge offer refreshing relief on a scorching day. It is also possible to visit the Ochre Pits that desert Aboriginal people once used as a quarry for ochre pigments. The world-renowned Larapinta Trail follows the backbone of the MacDonnell Ranges for 223 kilometres and there are a number of specialist walks so travellers of all fitness levels can experience it.

Renowned for its abundance of natural wonders, the Territory is home to over six must-visit national parks. Kakadu National Park is a protected area just 171km southeast of Darwin and covers almost 20,000 square kilometres – that’s half the size of Switzerland! This World Heritage listed park is rich in beauty and cultural values and is home to the world’s oldest Indigenous rock art. If exploring the region’s more recent cultural history appeals to you, the Heritage Walk including the Hartley Street School, the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame and The Residency are not to be missed. A trip to the Alice Springs Reptile Centre is sure to keep ever-inquisitive children on their toes. The daily shows are not to be missed and involve a fun and informative talk about lizards and pythons, followed by a supervised handling session. Guided tour options are available through AAT Kings and Tailormade Tours, allowing you to travel further afield and experience the Top End in a group environment. The typically dry Todd River winds through Alice Springs and is home to the quirky annual Henley-On-Todd ‘Boat Race’. The famous Royal Flying Doctor Service is based in Alice Springs and provides an aerial medical service to outback residents. Similarly, the Alice Springs School of the Air broadcasts lessons over the radio to students living in remote areas of the NT, covering an area bigger than several European countries. 136 N T LIFE

If you can’t make it to Wimbledon, come on up to Alice Springs for the annual Schweppes Red Centre Open and watch a tennis champion in the making. The Open, held from the 28th September until 1st October, is the richest tennis tournament in the Northern Territory and attracts players from all over Australia. Many of the players compete all around the world and have ATP and WTA rankings. We assure you that this tournament will keep you on the edge of your seat!
The Finke Desert Race is Australia’s premier off-road racing event that attracts bike, car and buggy entries from around Australia and overseas. It is a multi-terrain, two-day race through desert country from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) Community and is reputed to be one of the most difficult off-road races in one of the most remote places in the world. The Finke, as the event is commonly known, is run along sections of the Old Ghan Railway service track, adjacent to the railway line, along a winding corrugated track, which snakes through typical outback terrain of red dirt, sand, spinifex, mulga and desert oaks.
The Henley-On-Todd Regatta is a day that should be marked in your calendar. Held on the 15th August, the regatta is a fun and laughter-filled experience, as spectators watch teams and individuals race ‘boats’ up the dry, sandy bed of the Todd River. The event originated when Alice Springs local, Reg Smith and his work colleagues proposed holding a regatta based on the famous Henley-On-Thames. The idea was taken up by the Rotary Clubs of Alice Springs, and the fact that the town was 1,500 km from the nearest large body of water was never seen as a problem. In fact it just provided an opportunity for ingenuity, and so the ASSA ABLOY HenleyOn-Todd was born.
While camels may have a reputation as dedicated ‘ships of the desert’, these magnificent beasts are certainly not short on personality. Racing them can prove a nightmare for riders and handlers but fantastic viewing for spectators. Entertainment is assured, with nine unique races scheduled around the dusty outback track throughout the day. There will be lots of action between races, too. Belly dancers, rickshaw races, ‘Kids Kamel Dapers’ hobby camel races, rides, Mr and Miss Camel Cup challenges, food stalls and bars all add to the carnival atmosphere.

Central Northern Territory has close ties to our original landowners. With rich histories and strong ties to their land, the first custodians of this area still maintain and invest in their teachings, beliefs and spiritual history.
The Arrernte Aboriginal people hold strong beliefs about the mysteries of Australia. From the creation of Mparntwe (pronounced mbarn-twa), commonly known as Alice Springs, to the dreamtime stories passed down through generations, their rich heritage and unique relationship with the land has ensured that they stay spiritually connected to their past. Creation and Dreamtime stories enhance this connection, expanding their historical links as far afield as Urlatherrke (Mt Zeil) to Port Augusta in South Australia. Their historical presence can be witnessed throughout the Northern Territory through the identification of sacred grounds and art forms including rock paintings, sculptures and carvings. The Arrernte people continue to live in Mparntwe, observing their traditional laws and customs, maintaining their land and educating future generations in the importance of their culture and history.

LAND Archaeological work suggests that Aboriginal people have lived in the area for at least 22,000 years.

he Anangu people are Uluru’s traditional custodians but until recently, the monolith was known as Ayers Rock (named after former premier Sir Henry Ayers by European explorer William Gosse, who first sighted the rock in 1873). Uluru was returned to the care and ownership of the Anangu in 1985 and they now jointly manage the national park with Parks Australia. Watarrka National Park, 300 kilometres to the north-east of Uluru, is best known for Kings Canyon - a mighty chasm that cleaves the earth to a depth of 270 metres. The sheer red rock face of the Canyon soars over 100 metres above cycad gardens. The park is an important conservation area, where rock holes and gorges provide refuge for over 600 species of plants and
many native animals. The park encompasses the western end of the George Gill Range and is home to a variety of unique native flora and fauna, including more than 600 different plant species. The area has also been home to Luritja Aboriginal people for the last 20,000 years. The word Watarrka refers to the umbrella bush that proliferates in this unique landscape. Travellers can experience the umbrella bush on a hike to the Canyon rim. Trekkers will first encounter a steep climb to the Canyon rim, but the spectacular views of the sheer red rock faced Canyon will make the trekkers forget the trouble. All along the rim walk are the weathered, buttressed domes of the Lost City and the sheltered valley, Garden of Eden, which is bursting with permanent waterholes 141 N T LIFE

The shady and more sedate Kings Creek Walk ambles 1 kilometre along the valley floor to an incredible lookout point and is suitable for families. This region does have its share of restaurants and cafés, mainly in Uluru/Ayers Rock’s tourist village and at Kings Canyon accommodation, but the most spectacular after dark entertainment out here is the sky. When night falls, the stars shine so much brighter, and many travellers just sit and stare for hours. Another special night time activity is the Sounds of Silence dinner – a feast in the open air with Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the distance and a lone didjeridu and astrologer for accompaniment. Other sunset options in this area are camel rides and outback barbecues.

For both its Aboriginal custodians and the travellers that flock here, UluruKata Tjuta National Park, 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, represents the physical and spiritual heart of Australia. The region encompasses Uluru and Kata-Tjuta, positioned alongside the township of Yulara, Kings Canyon, and the intermittent outback cattle stations.

ising from the broad desert plain in the deep centre of Australia, Uluru is Australia’s most recognisable natural icon. It stands 348 metres high, and, like an iceberg, has most of its bulk below the surface. It is located 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. To the west by 40 kilometres of Uluru/Ayers Rock is Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas. This massive pile of rock domes dates back 500 million years. Both Uluru/Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta/The Olgas have great cultural significance for the Anangu traditional landowners, who lead walking tours that inform about the local flora and fauna, bush foods and the Aboriginal Dreamtime stories of the area.
