That’s why Casuarina Senior College is employing a fresh approach to education, positioning students to be more creative, reflective, critical thinkers. The college achieved the highest number of students in the top 20 in the Territory last year; high ATAR results and an NTCET completion rate of 96 per cent, above the Territory average. CSC is building on this success, with a strong culture of supportive learning environments and rich, diverse education and training opportunities. In addition to the core curriculum, Casuarina Senior College offers specialised programs like the Centre for Excellence in Medicine and Health Sciences, an Elite Sports Program, High Achievers Program and the new VET Maritime Program coming in 2016. The College has provided quality education for generations of students over the past 42 years, but the past 12 months have seen some particularly exciting developments. Principal Paul Mathews joined the College in November last year 12

with a fresh new approach to the management and direction of the College. Casuarina has since become an Independent Public School, one of only 12 in the Territory, opening new pathways and an innovative approach to education. The achievement of becoming an IPS provides greater autonomy, including more control over staffing selection, increased creativity in delivering the curriculum and more opportunities for students and their families, teachers and the wider College community. “I am really excited about the possibilities at Casuarina Senior College,” says Paul. “The College has a really rich history providing outstanding graduates who have gone onto very successful careers. We are continuing this tradition of academic achievement while engaging the community and moving with the times to refresh our approach.” As well as encouraging academic performance, Casuarina Senior

College seeks to provide whole of student care, embedding a student wellbeing program to guide social and emotional development too. “We have a full time youth worker and College counsellor delivering health programs to help students look after themselves and each other. “Our core values are really reflected here; respect, high expectations, trust, responsibility and honesty. The new vision reinforces this with students and the College community.” Paul says this period of change and growth will continue, as the College plans to keep renewing in order to meet ever-changing needs. “We have a very broad range of faculty areas to ensure every student can pursue something that interests them,” says Paul. “As well as the specialised programs we have performing arts, digital multimedia and spacious and modern facilities to support their learning.” Critical to the future growth of the College is seeking feedback from the wider community on their wants and needs for the College. That’s why the Northern Suburbs Destination Strategy is a key focus of the vision for 2020 which will see stronger connections between the College’s feeder middle schools and primary schools to establish connected pathways for student progression. “We have an outstanding level of support from the parents and families of this College, and their level of support for the IPS process was an endorsement of their faith in the leadership.” Providing a link between parents and management is the College Council, chaired by Adam Walding. He says it’s an exciting time in the College’s history and the new initiatives are paving the way for quality educational outcomes. “It is an exciting College creating high performing achievers. The kids love coming here because it’s such a friendly, welcoming and safe school that encourages them to learn.” College Year 10 Captain Chloe agrees. “All the people here, the staff and students are equally friendly. It is a brilliant school with clear goals in mind and everyone does everything they can to achieve them. The subjects they offer are broad and diverse, which I know will help when I am ready to start my career.
