Palmerston Regional Hospital The Palmerston Regional Hospital is the first public hospital to be built in the Northern Territory in almost 40 years.
The health facility has been designed with the growing needs of the Palmerston and rural community in mind and is the result of $110 million funding from the Australian Government and $40 million funding from the Territory Government. Steven Hay, Lendlease’s Contractor’s Representative on Palmerston Regional Hospital said Lendlease was excited about starting work on Palmerston Regional Hospital and increasing its presence in Darwin. “We understand the importance of our upcoming projects to the Territory, and are working with Carey Training, Group Training NT and other Aboriginal businesses to provide training and personal development opportunities,” Mr Hay said. “Local companies looking for work on the project should go to palmerstonregionalhosptial.icn.org.au to see what’s coming up and express their interest. “Lendlease might be big, but we also know how to be local. We‘ve got an excellent track record in delivery of health
facilities across Australia and pride ourselves on supporting the development of local communities. “Lendlease has a real commitment to Indigenous jobs and training. “Since 2011, we’ve been investing in our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and RAP Partnerships to acknowledge and celebrate the proud heritage of Australia’s first people, and promote opportunities for career development, sustainable business growth, and economic participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.” NT Department of Health has led more than 100 separate hospital design workshops and consultations with nearly 1300 clinicians and staff participating so far, each contributing to the clinical design and layout of the new Palmerston Regional Hospital. They have worked with clinical staff to determine how the emergency department, maternity, medical and surgical services will be delivered and link with Royal Darwin Hospital services.

On some workshop sessions different room layouts were taped out on the floor for staff to have a real feel of how the work spaces would translate into real life. These simple exercises saw staff really challenge room layouts and provide great feedback on practical areas for different types of patient rooms and treatment areas. Further sessions are planned with more feedback from clinicians and operational staff, from doctors and nurses, to those who look after patient meals, patient admission, and clean hospital rooms. The next phase in the hospital design will focus on finalising design of some areas and to start looking at a number of issues from a facility wide perspective. These areas require a consistent approach across the entire hospital and include safety, interior and exterior design, access, infection control, security and equipment. Northern Territory Minister for Health John Elferink said that onsite civil works had now commenced on the hospital site. “We are very happy to be delivering on a key commitment to the people of Palmerston and the rural area. “The work being completed is part of the larger package of works which will continue to roll out over the coming years.”
“Works remain on track to meet the project’s most important milestone date as agreed with the Australian Government – open for operation in 2018.” Minister John Elferink
PALMERSTON CITY CENTRE MASTER PLAN
The City of Palmerston has developed a conceptual Master Plan for its City Centre to provide a vision and framework to achieve better planning and urban design outcomes as well as facilitate the ongoing development of the centre whilst creating an identity for Palmerston. The vision is predominantly for the next 10-15 years, however it also provides long term direction for the next 30 years.

Coolalinga Village Gwelo’s latest commercial project has commenced on the eastern side of the Stuart Highway and will cater for the rapidly expanding rural area and southern suburbs of Palmerston. The anchor tenants for the shopping village are signed up. They are Coles, Kmart, Liquorland and Kmart Tyre and Auto Service. McDonald and Coles Express are already trading. Further food outlets will be constructed on additional outside pad sites by completion of the shopping village. Of the 60 specialty shopping areas available in stage 1, over 30 have been taken up by interested retailers. MCDONALD’S PALMERSTON IS UNDERGOING A SIGNIFICANT RENOVATION THAT WILL BOOST LOCAL EMPLOYMENT AND CREATE A NEW DINING EXPERIENCE FOR THE PALMERSTON COMMUNITY.
The two-stage restaurant refurbishment will see Palmerston’s Drive Thru upgraded to dual lane and the relocation of McCafe will increase indoor seating by 20 seats. McDonald’s Palmerston Licensee Vicki-Leigh Lettice expects the refurbishment will create up to 50 part time and casual jobs. “This restaurant refurbishment is an opportunity for us to give back to our customers and show our commitment to improving their restaurant experience. “I’m also very proud to be in a position where I can help boost employment opportunities for the local community,” said Vicki-Leigh. Vicki-Leigh said the upgrades will provide a fresh dining experience and will include spacious seating and a new McCafe to provide a more efficient service for customers. “The renovations will also include a new play area for children and the inclusion of ‘Create Your Taste’ digital kiosks that allow customers to build their own gourmet burgers from scratch,” she said. The ‘Create Your Taste’ concept treats customers to table service as they can enjoy a drink while they wait for their creation to be made fresh off the grill and brought to their table. McDonald’s Palmerston will remain open during refurbishments which are currently underway with the dual lane Drive Thru scheduled for completion by late November and the rest of the works expected to be completed in April 2016.

Depending on your location, you may need to rely on your own resources to get through until the emergency or disaster has passed or help arrives. The most important thing to remember is to ensure that your kit is able tosustain yourself and every family member for up to 72 hours or more.

NT Women Motorcycle Riders was founded in April of 2013 by local professional business woman Lisa Hewlett in the search of something new to inspire local ladies to take the bars, gain confidence, make friends and have a space to ask questions within a group without feeling intimidated. Of course taking the man out of it… it is one large step for mankind and one we don’t consider lightly. We all want to look powerful and sexy, I mean who doesn’t want something big throbbing thing between our legs? But this machine does not take batteries ladies, it is big, often heavy and takes some getting used to, but “wow wee”, once you do there is no stopping us. A fair few of us never consider riding a motorbike, Lisa certainly didn’t and probably not unlike others found their partner got them into it, some may call it a “mid-life crises” Lisa calls it a “mid-life awakening”! Lisa commenced the group adding her neighbour who she knew rode and then met her backbone of the group Connie Hoy, along with others. Connie has been a solid member of the group providing the group with many years-experience both on and off road which is invaluable. group places great value on up-skilling new riders, respecting the safety of all road users whilst on a ride with the group, and adhering to our riding guidelines. We highly recommend our ladies do all the METAL courses (Motorcycle Education Training and Licencing) which are fantastic. Today Lisa is proud to say she has over 80 members from ages 16-50’s from all walks and professions and are continuing to grow. We hold regular rides to local business for breakfast and lunch thereby supporting the local community and get involved in Charity rides when we can, this month we are holding a garage party where the ladies can learn about basic bike maintenance, test new motorcycles and try on new gear, there is certainly never a dull moment with this bunch. It’s all about good times shared by all on a ride over a cup of hot coffee or a plate of food.
Preparing furniture for the wet The wet season is coming, and it is bringing it’s inseparable friends rain and mould along for the ride. If you have leather in your home now is the time to prepare it to last another season and save a desperate call to the leather doctor when your sofa turns a nice shade of greenish grey and sprouts new growths.

• Start by dusting it with a feather duster or soft bristled brush to loosen anything on the surface. If your furniture is really mistreated or hasn’t been cleaned in a long time vacuum it first to get any particles out of crevices or under cushions. • To remove any stains or marks you can use dove soap or a mix of lemon juice and baking soda- always test the mix on a inconspicuous area first to make sure it doesn’t affect the colour of the leather. • Mix a cleaning solution of equal parts of water and white vinegar, use this to wipe over the entire sofa / chair , starting from the top and working your way down rinsing the cloth in the cleaning solution as necessary. • Dry furniture off with a towel then mix a conditioner treatment using one part white vinegar and two parts flaxseed oil. Rub this treatment on using circular motions and leave to soak overnight (without using the furniture) and then buff the piece with a soft lint free rag to remove the product restore shine. • Your furniture will repay you by seeing out the rainy season and being ready to snuggling up on again in the dry.

Fun stuff The centrepiece of the park is a six-lane racer water slide that Top End locals and visitors will be able to enjoy. Local company Gratis Pty Ltd was awarded the tender in April 2011. The super slide stands at 14 metres high and enables people to race each other to the bottom. The racer slide features a ‘ready, set, go’ system at the top and records your race place when you exit. A spectator stand with solid shade is located at the end of the slide, providing shade for slide users as they queue to ride and provides excellent viewing for people to watch the racers in action. There are also two wet play areas. The family and toddlers‘ wet play area features sprays, water curtains and a shallow wading pool. The teenagers’ wet play area features more active water cannons, buckets and high intensity interactive play.
