A leading helicopter and tourism operator in Queensland for the past 23 years, Nautilus Aviation this year spread its ‘rotary wings’ to the Top End. Here, in less than three months, Nautilus Aviation commenced its scenic flight program, sponsored two iconic events, introduced event transfers by luxury helicopter, purchased local company Helifish and, opened Darwin’s first helicopter flight training school. With its obvious commitment to local growth, the Company is earning the right to call Darwin home. In March this year, Nautilus Aviation was identified by the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission as the preferred park-based operator to conduct scenic flights from Charles Darwin National Park. Adding Darwin to its team of bases alongside Cairns, Townsville, Horn Island, Mt Isa and Weipa was an exciting win for the Territory – for both locals and the visitor economy.

The Company’s support for local development continued with the purchase of popular helicopter fishing company ‘Helifish’ from long-time resident Mark Rolle. Aaron Finn said, “The acquisition of a respected company like Helifish complements our new operations in Darwin perfectly. It also enables the Company to engage with more of the top end community and signifies our commitment to Darwin and the promotion of the NT Region”. Company resources will ensure a strong future for Helifish and will continue to operate with the same great local staff members that have helped make the business the success it is today.

With access to one of the largest, most versatile and modern fleets in northern Australia, the Company’s arrival brings more choice to Territorians, ensures competitive prices and promotes the Northern Territory to its already established markets in China, India, New Zealand and the United States. If you have not yet been for a flight over In particular, the promotion in China Darwin, call the team at Nautilus Aviation and will be most advantageous as it is book a scenic flight from $110 in their identified as the fastest growing travel market in the world. beautiful Airbus H120 or Airbus H130. Management was personally excited The sky is no to commence operations in Darwin with three of its staff members having strong ties to the Territory. Chief Executive Officer Aaron Finn disclosed, “Our National Business Development Manager Elli Vukasovic is a proud Territorian and passionate about the region’s promotion; and Pilot, Bronwyn Loud who relocated from Cairns is a previous resident, thrilled to have returned to its airways”. Mr Finn also revealed he was very fond of the Top End, “It’s my second home. I’ve been visiting family here for years”. A firm believer of local partnerships and support, Nautilus Aviation was quick to confirm its sponsorship of both the Darwin Turf Club ‘Carlton Mid Cup Carnival’ and the Noonamah Tavern Rodeo. The Company also introduced a luxury event transfer service at both events – a service readily available to locals as well as our interstate and international friends. Nautilus Aviation looks forward to working with other local operators in Darwin and the NT to combine products and services.

Not just about scenic flights and commercial charters, after only three months Nautilus Aviation launched a helicopter flight training school with classrooms in Darwin, Cairns and Townsville. In a win for new and experienced Pilots of Darwin, they can now longer your limit! move forward in their aviation careers without flying interstate. Training with Nautilus Aviation is an unmatched experience with classrooms located in stunning World Heritage-listed sites such as the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest and the Top End’s Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. A space to watch is the Company’s development of an onsite Cultural Precinct at Charles Darwin National Park. Tailored to the Park and presented by Indigenous experts, visitors and locals will have the opportunity to learn about Indigenous culture and history, participate in traditional workshops and performances, taste fresh (seasonal) bush tucker and learn the significance of key plant life from an authentic cultural perspective. Combined with a scenic flight, each guest will learn the complete story belonging to Darwin and why it is historically significant and so special to its residents.

Let Ray White manage your greatest asset What is important to landlords? Simple, responsive customer service, communication as well as appreciation for their most valuable asset. In this challenging and competitive market, when a landlord has a vacant property they need to feel reassured that their property management is doing everything they can to get the property leased for the best market price. How long will it take to find a tenant for my property? Whilst we can’t promise an exact period of time, we can tell you that properties which are better presented, more professionally marketed, priced according to the current rental market conditions and represented by a professional agent will rent more efficiently and will guarantee better quality tenants. How often do you carry out property inspections? When a new tenant is put in place, we carry out the first inspection after 8 weeks and then every 12 weeks (3 months) going forward. We will complete a fully detailed report with photos, advising of any maintenance issues. These will either be emailed or posted, depending on the landlord’s preference. We can then arrange for any quotes and or repairs that were advised in the report. 80% of property investors are missing out! We have partnered with BMT Tax Depreciation, our preferred depreciation provider. Make sure you aren’t missing out on thousands in depreciation deductions. Receive a reduced fee of $715 inc. GST (normally $770) for a residential depreciation schedule by contacting our BDM on 0400 263 933.

ROYAL KATHERINE SHOW

Last Thursday in April until the last Thursday in October.

Show week (the third week in July) will bring more than 17,000 people to town, and creates the largest business week of the year. The excitement the Show brings is infectious and not only showcases the best of Katherine, but also the district.

As the sun dips into the Arafura Sea every Thursday and Sunday evening, most of Darwin descends on Mindil Beach; tables, chairs, rugs and eskies in tow. Food is the main attraction − Thai, Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese and Malaysian to Brazilian, Greek, Portuguese and more. Colourful arts and crafts vendors peddle their wares - handmade jewellery, natural remedies, artistic creations and unique fashion statements. Shop till you drop, catch a fire show, stop for a massage or be entertained by buskers, bands and talented performers as you wind your way through the palm lined boulevards of Mindil Beach Sunset Markets.

Enjoy a year-round program of events

Early in the week, Tuesday to Thursday, the Katherine Show begins with Equestrian events in the main arena, as well as Cattle events & Campdraft, all of which is open to the public, free of charge. MUSIC TO YOUR EARS There are some big names and diverse musical journeys to be had at this year’s Festival. The Lighthouse is the place to see killer Melbourne indie group City Calm Down, hard rock sister band Stonefield and Broome singer-songwriter Stephen Pigram, plus don’t miss To The Mountains, an inspiring collaboration between Territory favourites B2M and Timorese troubadour, Ego Lemos. The Festival Lounge returns to Darwin Railway Club with an adventurous program of eclectic sounds and spontaneous jam sessions, while partygoers have a new home this year with the introduction of Club Awi at Happy Yess.

THOUGHT PROVOKING Diverse experiences are certainly at the heart of this year’s program and there is much to challenge, provoke and inspire. Gobyerno invites you to take an illuminating look at our society, the way we govern it and how you might change it, while compelling and confronting Irish theatre work Lippy will be quite simply “like nothing else you’ll see” (Irish Times). Medium kicks off its global tour with world-renowned dancer Rianto, who will have you enthralled with his spectacular physical feats and contemporary style. Distinctly Territorian work Broken, by local playwright Mary Anne Butler, makes a return to Brown’s Mart Theatre after its stellar sold out season last year, and just across the way at Happy Yess you can catch spoken word artist Polarbear in Second City Stories.

FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY Festival time is the perfect chance to squeeze in some quality family time. Check out part play, part picture book, You and Me and the Space Between, a magical story of a young girl and her adventures, or discover the craft of storytelling with master ‘maker-upper’ Polarbear in Mouth Open, Story Jump Out; witness life-sized Ants doing their thing in Festival Park and, as kids love to party, there’s also a special free mini festival for mini people called emBARK!. Finally, it’s time to get Ted dressed and ready to party with the People’s Choice Teddy Bear’s Picnic – a family Festival favourite.

GIGGLES AND CABARET

A stellar line up of comedians promises plenty of Festival funniness with Peter Helliar, Anne Edmonds, Steve Hughes, Aamer Rahman and Amy Hetherington, and if you’ve ever dreamt of being on a gameshow, Miss Behave’s Gameshow is a must-see – just make sure you bring-briiiing your smart phone for some hilarious interactive fun. Festival favourites Finucane & Smith will transform The Lighthouse into an extravagantly feathered world with their new show The Birds, guaranteed to ruffle a few feathers, while Festival darling and cabaret queen Yana Alana returns with all-female band The Paranas in Covered – this time she’s baring her soul and not her derrière! In Calypso Nights we welcome the lovable and outlandish Juan Vesuvius to Darwin for the first time; his maraca-wielding absurdity will have you delving into the word of Caribbean music and dancing in the aisles. So much fun to be had!

THAT’S A WRAP Like all good things the 2016 Darwin Festival must come to an end. But don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened - and party! In a Festival first, #dfest16 ends with the mother of all parties in The WRAP – The Wicked Random Arts Party. Enter a world of wonder and embark on a journey of entertainment from early evening til late into the night at Festival Park. This special event includes an impressive line-up of performances from Client Liaison, Slum Sociable, Alimango, Véronique Serret, Aviva Endean, Polyglot Theatre and much more. See out the Festival with a bang and WRAP it up in true Festival style. So get festivus with the rest of us and enjoy the adventure that is the 2016 Darwin Festival!

2016 MISS MUDDY

GARMA FESTIVAL

Saturday 23 July, 2016

Friday 29 July - Monday 1 August, 2016

Miss Muddy is coming to a city near you and is a great day out for females of all fitness levels.

The Yothu Yindi Foundation is pleased to announce that registrations are now open for guests wishing to attend Garma 2016 in northeast Arnhem Land.

With around 5km of colour, foam, inflatables and MUD, Miss Muddy gives you a fun mix of everything you could possibly want in an outdoor event and more.

YYF CEO Denise Bowden said the 18th annual Garma would be a special event, marking the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (1976).

Outside having a great day with friends, just by participating you are also helping a great cause as all profits from Miss Muddy events go to the McGrath Foundation. With 15,600 ladies diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia in 2015 the need to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across the country continues to grow. This year you can also help support the McGrath Foundation beyond buying a ticket and inviting your friends. For every $50 of funds raised through your personal Miss Muddy Go Fundraise page in 2016 you will go in the draw to win a brand new Suzuki Vitara. It costs $380,000 to place a McGrath Breast Care Nurse in an area of need for three years, and with six events scheduled in 2016, we aim to raise enough to place six McGrath Breast Care Nurses in 2016. So, we thank you in advance for helping us support those in need and wish you the best of luck in the draw for the Suzuki Vitara, it is a fantastic car which you will no doubt love to bits.

Tickets are available through the garma.com. au website.

65TH ROYAL DARWIN SHOW

“But it’s been a long journey along the way, and we’d like to see more Indigenous communities not just surviving, but thriving through economic development measures linked to land ownership.” Garma 2016 will take place from 29 July - 1 August 2016, at the Gulkula ceremonial grounds in the heart of Yolngu country. “Garma is an adventure of a lifetime, a chance to explore a side of Australia that few people see, or really understand properly.” “We continue to push the boundaries with our hard-hitting Key Forum conference, but the real magic of Garma is in the celebration of Yolngu cultural traditions, which have sustained the clans of northeast Arnhem Land for tens of thousands of years, and remain strong to this very day.” With capacity limited at the Gulkula site, tickets for Garma sell out months in advance.

A FINE MIX OF

ART&FOOD

FOR NEVILLE PANTAZIS, STRONG FAMILY VALUES UNDERPIN THE CORE OF HIS SUCCESS. “My family is the pillar that allows me to do what I do. That’s a key part of the success of this business,” says Neville.

and retail was an easy transition. Influenced by the great food halls of David Jones, Harrods in London, and Dean and DeLuca’s in New York, Neville used his creativity and artistic flair to propel the visual impact of the business.

As Store Manager of Parap Fine Foods, Neville’s vision and market knowledge have enabled him to grow and develop the family business established by his parents Paul and Rene in 1968.

“With the big food halls overseas it’s almost like walking into a gallery. So I treat food the same way as art, constantly doing window displays, utilizing the European way of selling food from your front window,” he says.

Crediting his parents for providing his “street training” in the retail world, Neville believes the lessons they taught have enabled him to overcome many of the obstacles facing businesses today.

Inspired by travel, Neville believes that journeys overseas provide the best education. These trips also ignite Neville’s passion to ensure that Darwin does not miss out on what is offered to southern counterparts.

“History has a sense of repeating itself, and all that’s changed is the language that we use,” he says. Although he worked in the family business growing up, Neville left to pursue a career in the arts world. After obtaining a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Tasmania, he returned to Darwin as an Art Lecturer, before ultimately joining his sister Paula at the helm of the store.

“There is no reason why we can’t be as good as someone in Sydney or Melbourne. We can compete with the southern markets. Even though we have the tyranny of distance we’ve still got the client base that can equal the gourmet stores around Australia,” he says.

According to Neville, the move from the art world back into food

Neville cites positive cash flow as a key indicator of success, and feels assured as to the longevity of Parap Fine Foods, as the third generation of the Pantazis family now comes through the ranks.

THERE IS NO REASON WHY WE CAN’T BE AS GOOD AS SOMEONE IN SYDNEY OR MELBOURNE. WE CAN COMPETE WITH THE SOUTHERN MARKETS.” NEVILLE PANTAZIS

Evan and Anna have been in the business of making delicious Greek food and providing world class, homely hospitality at their stunning Cullen Bay restaurant, Yots Greek Taverna, for ten years. In today’s difficult economic climate, that is a truly inspirational feat. But it’s no surprise considering the husband and wife duo’s unique recipe for success: it all comes down to heart.

team of eight full-timers and ten casuals, who put heart into all they do. What’s more, they put locals first and will never overlook Territorians for a quick tourist buck. “We surround ourselves with great people and make sure we nurture those bonds and friendships,” says Evan. Not the sort of advice you’d expect from a restaurant owner – and that’s just what sets Yots Greek Taverna apart.

Both Anna and Evan come from private enterprise backgrounds, and Evan’s family has a 100-year history of business in the Northern Territory. It’s this extraordinary family history, and their understanding of modern day business, that defines Yots.

Behind every Greek man is a strong Greek woman, says Evan; “Anna is the engine room, she makes sure it’s always well oiled and heading in the right direction”. She is a dedicated mother and businesswoman, and Evan credits her for a big chunk of their business’ success. And if that hasn’t convinced you, her homemade baklava certainly will!

When you walk into Yots, you may as well be walking into Anna and Evan’s lounge room. “It’s one and the same,” says Evan on distinguishing his personal and work life. “Our staff are our children and our customers our guests.” They have a wonderful, passionate

Hanuman Restaurant

Doubletree Esplanade 93 Mitchell Street, Darwin • (08) 8941 3500

HANUMAN Coming from a long career as a renowned chef, restaurateur and the drive behind the wildly successful Hanuman restaurants, Jimmy Shu has three secrets to success; perseverance, patience and self-belief.

‘SOMETIMES THINGS GET HARD BUT TO NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF YOUR GOALS IS THE TOUGHEST CHALLENGE. THE VERY FACT WE ARE STILL IN EXISTENCE IS A MILESTONE EVERY SINGLE YEAR. THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE BLESSING. BEING GENUINE, INNOVATIVE AND TO LOVE WHAT YOU DELIVER EVERY SINGLE DAY IS SUCCESS. ’

With a strong enthusiasm for food and flavours, Jimmy has built a following of fans world-wide. Finding inspiration and influences from all around the world, Jimmy’s dishes are a mixture of authentic Thai, Nonya and Tamil flavours. Through striving to create traditional meals full of fresh and perfectly blended spices and ingredients, Jimmy’s approach is to his food and his business is a testament to the power of purpose. ‘I search long and hard to find chefs that live for beautiful food. Our style of cooking isn’t something you can read off a recipe, it is a passion for flavour which comes through until the very last mouthful. My final interview for a chef is to ask them to prepare me a meal. I take them to a

local market, allow them to purchase all the ingredients and see how they bring it all together. I want the real thing and that only comes from a chef who has a true love for what they create.’ Operating within a tough industry, Jimmy’s aim was to make an environment that matched his passion for food and gave his customers a lasting experience with exceptional service. Choosing Darwin as the base for his grand plan, Jimmy’s success didn’t happen overnight but what it did give him was the opportunity to create a place true to his passion. ‘Twenty three years ago we opened Hanuman in Darwin. It was something totally different and it took a while for people to really embrace our style.

It was a huge learning curve and a slow rise to success,’ explains Jimmy. ‘We knew that the supply was there we just had to create the demand, form our own identity in the market. I believed in what we were building and kept persevering, one fine day – it all came together.’ For Jimmy and his team, the sparks of success have been flying ever since. Now with three sites in Darwin, Alice Springs and Adelaide, the passion for authenticity, customer experience and a commitment to growth has resulted in twentyeight awards collected across all three restaurants. With a life-time of industry knowledge, Jimmy hasn’t lost sight of why he started and attributes his journey to learning, sharing and enjoying his experiences.

NEVER STOP LEARNING T HI S I S PARAMOUNT TO SUCCESS.

“Never settle and think you’ve done enough. Always look to progress,” she says. Purchasing their first Oyster Bar in Holdfast Shores, South Australia from her father-in-law in 2010, Kirsty and her husband Jarrad quickly expanded their empire to encompass Oyster Bar Mandurah in Western Australia and, more recently, Oyster Bar Darwin. Selling South Australian Oysters – predominantly Coffin Bay – and promoting the idea of share food, all Oyster Bar venues around the country are situated in waterside locations where customers can relax and enjoy local wine and craft beer while partaking in the views. It was while studying a Bachelor of Arts and Education that Kirsty was first introduced to the concept of the Oyster Bar, when Jarrad began working alongside his father at their Holdfast Shores location. “My husband called on one of their first weekends and wanted me to come in and help because it was so busy. I was petrified. I’d never poured a beer in my life,” recalls Kirsty. It didn’t take long however for Kirsty to find her niche, and discover her love of working with people and enhancing the customer experience. “I’m passionate about making people happy. It sounds cliché, but you can get so much satisfaction in your own life and be such a better person if you

can make others happy,” says Kirsty. Describing herself as driven, generous and applied, Kirsty says her sense of humour and ability

to laugh through tough times is her best quality. Inspired by her hard working family, Kirsty believes the key in motivating people around you is understanding that everybody learns things differently, and highlighting and building upon their individual strengths will encourage staff to provide customers with the level of service that you yourself would provide. “Be realistic, and never force someone to do something that is not right for them. You can teach them the skill and the knowledge, but they must have the desire,” says Kirsty. “You have to love what you do and that will motivate you personally. If you are not motivated and excited by what you are doing you will be limited to the level of success you will strive to achieve,” she adds.

DRIVING FUTURE THE

MOBILE EDUCATION IS WHERE IT’S AT.” CLINTON HOFFMANN

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, OR EDTECH, IS A BOOMING INDUSTRY. Territory-based company Ambrose Solutions, headed by innovative entrepreneur Clinton Hoffmann, has achieved success in the EdTech space with DriveAbout ™, a learning licence app. The prototype, initially financed and developed by Hoffmann, will be fully developed and available in up to twenty Aboriginal languages. It removes a massive barrier, as it enables indigenous people with poor literacy and numeracy skills to get their learners licence. Clinton is confident that the app will provide not only economic outcomes, as a licence is fundamental for employment, but also social outcomes in remote communities by

64

reducing incarceration rates due to offences such as driving unlicenced and under the influence without a licence. With the project standing ready to receive backing from the federal government and support from corporate Australia, it will enable Clinton to leverage further innovations under the Ambrose umbrella. “I had all of these products at development stage and I realized that I needed to concentrate on one to really prove that it works, and that was DriveAbout ™. Now that it’s been backed after three years of hard work and development it has lead us into our next two,” he says. Walkabout Your Business ™ is a business literacy program that was developed by Ambrose and was sponsored by Commbank, and uses story-telling and imagery to explain business concepts, while Think About

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

Your Decision ™ is a governance based training program that highlights the ten most common reasons boards fail, and how to avoid them. “The space we’re in, we’re creating highly engaging educational digital content with an assessment back end on a mobile platform,” says Clinton. According to Clinton, while the products have been developed by a local business for Aboriginal people living in the bush, they have a worldwide application, enabling all people to understand the fundamentals put to them simply and in easily digestible forms. “I’ve got a real interest now to focus on broader markets such as South East Asia and the United States with these products,” he says.

TERRITORY GOVERNMENT INVESTS IN COMMUNITIES AND PROSPERITY

FOR THE TERRITORY.

THE NORTHERN TERRITORY GOVERNMENT IS FOCUSING ON BOTH THE JOB SECURITY AND INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUSTAIN ECONOMIC GROWTH. 66

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

Chief Minister Adam Giles said his government was focused on protecting the Territory’s unique lifestyle. “We’re delivering strong and balanced environmental regulations while ensuring we create the economic opportunities the Territory needs to prosper,” Mr Giles said. “The Northern Territory Government understands the challenges faced by some in our small business sector. We have responded, driving job security and growth, and ensuring that community and a prosperous economy are at the heart of everything we do.”

OUR PLAN

B U D G E T 2 0 1 6 R E - I N V E S T S PA R T OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THE LEASE OF THE PORT OF DARWIN INTO A RANGE OF PROJEC TS D E S I G N E D T O S T I M U L AT E INVESTMENT AND DIVERSIFY T H E T E R R I T O R Y E C O N O M Y.

The Government is investing in the Territory for today, tomorrow and twenty years from now. $400,000 has been allocated to support the establishment of indigenous crocodile hatchery enterprises in Arnhem Land. Budget 2016 also invests $5.25 million for bakeries in remote communities, $7.2 million to continue the Community Champions Program, and $10 million for the Regional Economic Infrastructure fund. JOB SECURITY AND ECONOMY Driving economic growth by delivering infrastructure across the Northern Territory is a huge priority for the Giles Government. The Territory Government is investing $300 million from the proceeds of the TIO sale and the long term lease of Darwin Port in the Northern Territory Infrastructure Development Fund. The Territory’s contribution will be the cornerstone in attracting a further $1.2 billion from external investors, creating a $1.5 billion investment pool, which is expected to generate up to $4.5 billion in infrastructure investment. “We’re funding infrastructure expenditure to support jobs, families and the future through a transport infrastructure program worth $590 million,” Mr Giles said. “We are spending $164 million on education infrastructure and $350 million over three years to construct new housing and upgrade existing housing in remote Indigenous communities.” A $20 million grant program is encouraging Territory home owner-occupiers to hire small Territory businesses to undertake minor improvements and repairs and maintenance on their homes. A voucher of up to $2 000 per home owner-occupier on a 50:50 co-contribution basis, will be available from 1 July 2016 to assist with the cost of work undertaken. “The scheme has already been a great success with

large numbers of tradies and homeowners participating in the scheme,” Mr Giles said. The Government also wants to increase the number of first home buyers in the real estate market with more assistance. The introduction of a first home owner stamp duty discount of up to 50 per cent, with a maximum saving of $10 000, for first home buyers purchasing established homes in the Territory from 24 May 2016 to 30 June 2017. The First Home Owner Discount is expected to provide $5.5 million in extra assistance to Territory home buyers and will complement the successful $26 000 First Home Owner grant provided for new dwellings. POLICE To ensure a confident culture and strong society, the safety of every Territorian is paramount. The Government has provided $400 million for the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services, with an additional $1.53 million to deploy an additional six police officers in Wadeye, increasing the total police number in this community to 14. More than $4 million over three years in joint funding will go to providing an increased police presence on Groote Eylandt, and $2 million for a new body worn video system for frontline police officers across the Northern Territory. Additionally, the Government is investing $12.6 million over three years to upgrade ultrahigh frequency radio equipment and infrastructure. $625,000 will also go towards the Emergency Management Training Unit, and $1.83 million has been allocated in Budget 2016 to fund the final year of the Central Northern Territory Fire Alarm System Transmissions. In further support of the essential work that our firefighters undertake, $1.9 million has been allocated in Budget 2016 to replace the existing 37 metre high-rise Bronto Aerial Fire Appliance. EDUCATION Mr Giles said Budget 2016 invests heavily in vital infrastructure like schools, hospitals and housing to ensure the Territory remains a great place to live and work. $143 million has been allocated to education infrastructure and $21 million in capital grants. As part of the Government’s Indigenous Education Strategy, Budget 2016 invests $43.7 million in improving Indigenous student outcomes. That includes $4.9 million to support remote Indigenous students to determine their secondary school pathways. “Remote students will continue to be supported through $5.4 million to operate the new Northern Territory Open Education Centre to provide a worldclass, contemporary distance education service,” Mr Giles said. “The Northern Territory Government is proud to be investing in our children today, to ensure the Territory has a bright future tomorrow.” TRANSPORT We’re connecting Territorians through a total infrastructure spend of $1.7 billion in Budget 2016, including $554 million to upgrade existing roads and build new roads. Budget 2016 invests $ 27 million to seal the road to Port Melville, $5.45 million to seal and upgrade sections of Tanami road, $2 million for the Wadeye barge landing upgrade, $7.9 million to continue upgrades to Roper Highway; and $6 million to upgrade access to Pinelands Industrial Precinct. HOUSING A new approach to remote housing is being adopted, to improve and address the provision of housing services in communities. Budget 2016 provides $1 million to establish a Remote Housing Development Authority, to improve the provision of housing services in remote communities. The Northern Territory Government’s investment in remote housing continues in Budget 2016 with $350 million over 3 years to build 350 new houses and upgrade a further 1000 existing homes in remote Indigenous communities, $2 million to construct new dwellings in Elliott and Kalkarindji; and $5.35 million to continue the Homelands Extra Allowance program. The needs of the Bush has always been a focus for the Giles Government and $5 million will continue the expansion of telecommunication services in the remote communities. A further $470 000 will be invested for free public internet access in remote Indigenous communities. LIFESTYLE The Government’s sport voucher program will continue to provide $200 for every school-aged child each year towards sport, recreation and cultural activities. Alice Springs will benefit from $6.25 million to redevelop netball facilities, and the success of the inaugural Red CentreNATS event in Alice Springs in 2015 will be repeated, with $3.66 million over five years allocated to secure the event until 2020. Additional grant funding of $2 million in Budget 2016 will be provided to Motor Sports Northern Territory to upgrade various motor sport facilities across the Territory. The Budget invests $1.33 million to develop and maintain mountain bike tracks. TOURISM To develop additional tourism attractions, $20 million will be spent to build skywalk experiences in Territory parks. An additional $8 million for domestic and international marketing activity and cooperative activity with airlines, travel trade and other partners, taking the Government’s total investment in tourism marketing in 2016 to $48.5 million. Mr Giles said the successful multi-million dollar ‘Do the NT’ campaign continues to evolve and achieve positive results, and our highly successful Million Dollar Fish campaign will return with $500,000 allocated to attract more tourists to the Territory.

“The Million Dollar Fish campaign is an example of the ingenuity here in the Territory. It’s a great contemporary way to use one of our tourism icons to reach a massive market segment in an engaging way. It created a massive boost for out Tourism industry and next year’s competition will be bigger and better,” Mr Giles said. Budget 2016 continues to deliver for Territory events, with an additional $4 million for NT Major Events Company, $1 million to continue the agreement to hold a National Rugby League premiership game in Darwin and preseason game in Alice Springs; and $1.6 million to support FestivalsNT. Territory tourism operators have benefited from the $4.75 million tourism infrastructure grants program funded in Budget 2015, and the additional $5 million allocated through the Boosting our Economy package in 2016. $4 million will be spent on the development of the Alcoota Fossil Beds Field Station, and also funds infrastructure to enhance the unique outdoor lifestyle Territorians enjoy, with initiatives including $9 million for upgrades at the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex; $2.3 million for upgrades to TIO Stadium; $2 million grant to Motor Sports NT for the upgrading of various motor sport facilities across the Territory; and $1.5 million for a sealed cycle path from Howard Springs to Coolalinga. THE FUTURE, THE NEW ECONOMY Budget 2016 invests in the future prosperity of Territorians by realigning current training support programs as part of a Knowledge Territory package that will be expanded through future onshore gas royalties. In 2016, the Knowledge Territory initiatives will incorporate $1 million to establish the Office of the Chief Scientist to provide high-level independent advice on matters relating to science and innovation; $1 million for the Knowledge Territory Study Voucher program that will assist eligible apprentices and trainees with the cost of work wear and other necessities in their first year; $600 000 for Knowledge Territory Higher Education Scholarships; and $420 000 for the Knowledge Territory Cadetship program to support paid work experience with private sector employers for students during vacation breaks. We are partnering with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to deliver a $55 million project to roll out solar systems to more than 30 remote communities in the NT. Budget 2016 implements the vision and aspirations we all have, centred around Community, Prosperity and our Territory. It delivers for our Community. It delivers on jobs and job security. It delivers Prosperity. And most importantly, it delivers for the Territory.

Adam Giles

ADAM

GILES Chief Minister of the Norther n Ter ritor y

72

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

AT 5AM, THERE’S LESS THAN HALF A DOZEN PEOPLE WORKING OUT IN A DARWIN GYM. YOU’LL RECOGNISE THE GUY IN THE TERRITORY EELS TRAINING GEAR ON THE ROWING MACHINE. HE IS ADAM GILES, CHIEF MINISTER OF THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. Adam usually starts his day this way before going home to have breakfast with his young family. It gives him energy and time to plan for a long working day ahead. Adam says his parents instilled in him a belief that it is only through hard work that individuals can achieve their dreams. He started working in a bakery when he was just 12, earning the princely sum of $2.50 an hour. Later while still at school he would work there for up to 12 hours a day over the weekend.

I AM JUST ASKING TERRITORIANS TO THINK OF WHAT FUTURE THEY WANT FOR THEIR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN AS THEY DECIDE WHO THEY WILL ENTRUST GOVERNMENT WITH FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS,” THE CHIEF MINISTER CONCLUDES

Adam is a man on a mission and a man in a hurry. He was just 15 when his father, was tragically killed in a worksite accident. Adam the teenager learnt that there is no time to waste in life. He studied accounting, went on work in real estate and later moved into Indigenous Affairs. It was his frustration with government’s policy and his passion for the future of the Northern Territory that led him into politics. Adam refuses to talk about making history by becoming the first Indigenous Australian to lead a Government in this country. He is however passionate about what he calls the economic empowerment of Indigenous Territorians. “Economic rights are a precondition to a strong society and a confident culture,” he says. In his first speech to parliament, he said that he is here to make a real difference. Even his most strident detractors will admit he has been successful. Since Territorians chose the Country Liberals’ plan for government in 2012, wages and jobs have risen, while crime and cost of living pressures are down. The Government’s Economic Development Strategy is attracting major overseas investment which in turn is diversifying the Northern Territory economy and reducing its reliance on funding from Canberra. There are more and more jobs in gas, mining, agriculture, tourism and international education. So why are pundits writing off the Government’s chances of re-election? It is partly because the Government has looked messy at times, Giles concedes. “Look, I’m the first to admit we have been better at implementing good policy than we have been at selling it. If you want the best spin, you should vote Labor, but if you want real positive action then choose us,” he advises. But the real reason the Government is not soaring in the polls, according to the Chief Minister, comes down to one word: change. “Doing nothing is easy. Change is hard.” “But doing nothing is the same as going backwards. That is exactly what happened to the Territory under Labor between 2001 and 2012.” That was never going to be good enough for a Giles-led Government. He has been even more motivated to implement positive reform for the future of the Northern Territory since the birth of his first son last October. “It is for Robert and all the other children in the Territory that we make the tough decisions.” Tough decisions like leasing the Port of Darwin?

“Exactly! We knew it wasn’t going to be popular, but was necessary, as former Labor Chief Minister Paul Henderson agreed, and it is already proving successful.” “NT exports are worth about $5 billion a year. Without private investment the port would increasingly be a bottleneck stifling our growing economic relationship with our trading partners to the North.” New Port operators Landbridge already have $25 million of upgrade works under way. Other developments around the Port, including a multi-user ship lift facility and marine industry park are set to deliver 4500 new jobs for Territorians and a lot of work for local small business. A further 6000 jobs are on the way if Giles can implement his plan for an onshore gas industry. “With onshore gas – which is safe shale gas in the NT, not the coal seam gas they have in Queensland – we are proceeding carefully and listening to the community,” Giles says. “We are developing world’s best practice safety regulations and, unlike the previous Government, we have ruled out drilling anywhere near residential areas or in other areas of high environmental, farming, cultural or tourism value.” “Given that we are talking about 6000 jobs and up to $23 billion increase in gross state product, the only rational explanation for Labor’s opposition to this huge opportunity is politics.” “My opponent is worried about losing the Greens preferences he needs to seize power. By contrast, my team puts Territorians first.” It is ironic, because clean NT gas could replace energy from coal-fired power stations and cut Australia’s greenhouse emissions by far more than the LaborGreens carbon tax ever would. One thing Giles and the Labor Party leader agree on is that Territorians will have a choice between two very different futures on 27 August 2016. “We can take the easy low road back to Labor’s debt and deficits; to welfare dependency; to leniency for criminals; to union corruption and end up with an economy like Venezuela,” Giles warns “Or we can make the more long-sighted decision and continue on the high road to prosperity; to cutting cost of living pressures; to economic and jobs growth; to building enabling infrastructure; to northern development; to profitable industries; to individual responsibility; to a knowledge Territory; and to a flourishing diversified economy unbridled by debt.”

EXCITING NEW FACES IN COUNTRY LIBER ALS LINE UP

74

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

To discover more about the new Country Liberals team, visit countryliberals.org.au or find them on Facebook.

A FRESH NEW GROUP OF LOCAL CANDIDATES HAVE JOINED THE COUNTRY LIBERALS IN THE LEAD UP TO THE AUGUST 27TH TERRITORY ELECTION.

The diverse group includes people from conservation, small business, the law, policing, fire fighting, construction, teaching, sports and the arts. Former Australian Rural Woman of the Year, Giovanna Webb, who is contesting Labor-held Casuarina says it is exciting to be joining such a dynamic group. “Traditionally the Country Liberals choose local champions with plenty of real life experience and it is a real privilege to be part of this talented team,” Giovanna says. She certainly has plenty to contribute herself. The Columbian born zoologist runs the hugely successful Crocodylus Park with husband Professor Graham Webb, and has a keen passion for small business and conservation. Small business operator and former professional fireman Jarred Ilett is hoping to represent the northern suburbs seat of Karama which also includes Malak. The ex-NT Thunder Captain and CEO knows something about teamwork. “If you look at the great sporting teams, they always include a mix of seasoned champions and bright young talent – it is no different in politics,” Jarred told this reporter. Well known in small business and arts circles, Fannie Bay local Karen Brown perhaps has the toughest challenge, as she seeks to unseat the Opposition Leader. But the former school teacher is a natural optimist who says she is in it to win it. The Country Liberals are proud of their results in education, including the highest NTCE Pass Rates, highest NAPLAN rates and the highest indigenous participation rates. “I am looking forward to being part of a team that will continue to deliver economic growth to support health and education outcomes.” Born and bred Territorian Steven Klose is fighting for the electorate of Johnston - the Jingili-Rapid Creek area he grew up in. The former Master Builders Apprentice of the Year is respected for his ability to listen and engage with the community.

“IT’S NOT ABOUT TELLING PEOPLE WHAT WE WILL DO IT IS ABOUT ASKING THEM WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO, AND ACTING UPON THAT,” STEVEN SAYS.

“Adam Giles and the Country Liberals have a plan to grow our economy and improve our lifestyles”. The Country Liberals have strengthened their connection with young people by pre-selecting Rohan Kelly for the electorate of Port Darwin, which includes the Central Business District and Larrakeyah. Darwin has Australia’s youngest population. Young people make an outstanding contribution to the social and economic foundation of the Territory. The Country Liberals are committed to improving job and education opportunities for young people. “We want to connect young people to the economic and cultural opportunities of northern Australia.” Ted Dunstan Nightcliff is a recent chairman of Neighbourhood Watch NT. A strong disabilities advocate, and a committed Christian. He is dedicated the safety and security of Nightcliff residents. Ted is developing policies to address anti-social violence. Ted is also working with the Country Liberals Government to redevelop the John Stokes Square public housing complex to unite the two main shopping precincts. Experienced, capable and proactive, Ted will contribute to our strong economy,

community development, a balanced environment and good governance. Tim Dixon is seeking to take over from a veteran politician contesting the neighbouring electorate of Fong Lim, currently held by the NT Treasurer. Tim is passionate about the Territory lifestyle, having ceded the prospect of a lucrative big city legal career to settle in Darwin which he describes as the perfect place to raise a young family. “The new candidates all bring something new and different to the table. What we all have in common is a burning desire to give something back to the Northern Territory,” Tim says. You’ll find no one more passionate about Palmerston than café and gym owner Ben Hosking who is hoping to stand up in Parliament for the residents of the electorate of Drysdale. The decorated ex Tactical Response Group police officer is running a strong law and order campaign. “The people of Palmerston appreciate the Government’s tough on crime initiatives, however more needs to be done to tackle hooning, drunkenness and other antisocial behaviour,” Ben says. Candidate for the rural seat of Goyder, Carolyn Reynolds has the most varied background. The molecular biophysicist, genetic engineer, teacher and businesswoman, worked as a school teacher and has a Masters of Education and Business. Carolyn says she is passionate about helping people. The Country Liberals team is a diverse group of professionals that is committed to the betterment of the Territory. It is quite a contrast with the rather drab line up of union officials in the Labor Party. It looks like the election will be a choice between a close team genuinely representative of everyday locals on the one hand, and a cohort of career politicians with limited or no private sector work histories on the other. IN SHORT, WE MAKE WATER WORK FOR PEOPLE,”

Adam Stockwell says.

While three quarters of Darwin residents believe that they have an unlimited water supply, usage does come at a cost – to the hip pocket. What if there was a way to not only reduce your water consumption, thus lowering your water bill, but also be given money to improve water saving on your property? According to Adam Stockwell, Managing Director of Think Water Darwin, there is. “We are a shared partner in the Living Water Smart program, which gives rebates for private customers in the retail and commercial market to fix up irrigation systems,” he says. The initiative offers a variety of measures and support to help with water saving in the home or business, including free property water audits by Think Water Darwin to eligible customers to determine water wastage and reduce usage. “At the end of the day it’s about making water work domestically, industrially and commercially,” says Adam.

With stores in Winnellie and Virginia, Think Water Darwin offer water solutions to a diverse customer base from domestic DIY clients through to large agricultural properties, the construction industry, remote communities and government. With an extensive list of successful projects, the team at Think Water Darwin is experienced in solving water problems and offering design advice in the irrigation space for those wanting to undertake their own irrigation installation. “If you want to do it yourself, but you don’t have the irrigation knowledge, Think Water can help with the design of a new system or the repair of an existing system or components,” says Adam. Backed by the national Think Water Franchise with supply arrangements, marketing support and industry training, Adam says Think Water Darwin are committed to providing a personalised customer service to meet needs and exceed expectations.

COMMUNITY

Giovanna Webb

WEBB

MEANS BUSINESS: mother, businesswoman and politician too

IN A TIME WHEN PEOPLE IN GENERAL ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY CYNICAL ABOUT POLITICS, IT IS REALLY EXCITING TO SEE SOMEBODY AS ACCOMPLISHED AS GIOVANNA WEBB NOMINATE FOR POLITICAL OFFICE.

In an environment dominated by aspirants whose whole life revolves around political parties, it is rare to find a candidate who has excelled in academia as well as business and public life before deciding to give something back to the community herself, to make a difference. Colombian-born Giovanna Webb is a remarkable achiever. She was the 2013 Australian Rural Woman of the Year, and a NT Australian of the Year finalist in 2014. She’s a mother, businesswoman, migrant and zoologist. Now, she’s a politician too. As the Country Liberals representative for the Casuarina electorate, it’s fair to expect many more remarkable achievements from Giovanna in 2016. Giovanna and husband Dr Grahame Webb run one of Darwin’s most popular tourist attractions, Crocodylus Park, which is home to 10 thousand crocodiles. They breed crocodiles and harvest eggs from wetlands around Darwin. Giovanna’s crocodile skins, died gorgeous shades of pink, red, blue and every other colour, are sold to high-end European fashion houses including Louis Vuitton and Hermès. What’s more, “Gio”, as she is affectionately known, has developed a pilot program to encourage Indigenous women artists to incorporate crocodile by-products in innovative new art works. Giovanna spent the first 30 years of her life in her native country of Colombia, where she had a distinguished academic career whilst pursuing her lifelong passion for animal welfare and conservation. She was at the forefront of the now universally recognised concept of the sustainable use of threatened species which by placing a commercial value on the animal ensures their conservation. “We need to be bold and strategic in the way we lead Darwin forward, and the Country

Liberals Government fully embraces this,” she says. “Recognising and talking about Darwin’s proximity to Asia is one thing - but actively engaging it, to fuel our economy and tourism industries, is what we need.” Giovanna stresses the need to increase air capacity during the dry season, when visitors want to visit. As prices skyrocket, tourists cannot afford to come, and residents cannot afford to leave. Airline seats to fly ‘down south’ in emergencies, in the peak tourist season, do not exist or are way too expensive. ”I’m passionate about community life,” she says. “I am involved in community and family issues continually, and believe they are the very foundation of a strong and secure society.” “I have been working with the Government on a whole raft of issues relevant to the Casuarina electorate,” she says. Crime, anti-social behaviour, traffic, the hospital – which needs to be more welcoming to everyone – and its problematic car park, are being discussed with Government. To help with this she has opened an office in the Casuarina Village (Shop 5) and is ready to be the electorate’s voice to Government. Though Giovanna wears many hats –businesswoman, scientist, and community leader – she is first and foremost, a loving mother. With husband Grahame, her 16-year-old son, Freddy, is the most important part of her life. Giovanna says her decision to go into politics was “a family decision”, with Freddy and Grahame her strongest supporters. In short Giovanna does not need the job – she wants it, because having achieved so much in her personal life, she is ready to make a difference for both the Casuarina Electorate and the wider community. Currently, the NT imports 630 million litres of diesel per annum, which equates to 10,856 barrels per day.

The refining of natural gas to diesel could benefit the NT gas industry by allowing producers to use a facility with a production rate of 5000 barrels per day of clean (ultra-low sulphur) synthetic diesel.

With the Northern Territory Government engineering the new Aboriginal Coastal Fishing Licence, which allows people to catch and sell up to five tonne of fish per year, the program enables participants to contribute to the economy by managing a micro business in their traditional industry of fishing. “This is a real collaboration - a corporate, private, and government partnership to enable someone to catch a fish and sell a fish. There’s an old quote, “Do you give a man a fish, or do you teach him to fish?”,” says Clinton.

Focus on enhancing what is already in place so that you can plan around any elements that are hard to alter. Look for undertones in existing surfaces and surrounding elements that you can’t change – Like the footpath, your neighbours roof, or feature stonework or driveways, which are already in place. You will need to determine if these undertones are warm (khaki, faun or orange tones) or cool (blues, greys greens) and build your scheme around which you prefer. Consider paint colours and finishes that will tie these fixed elements together rather than clash with them so that your home looks in harmony with its surroundings.

HALEY RODDY

104

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

Consider the illusion you want to convey to visitors first arriving at your home. Do you want your home to feel cool and calm or cozy and moody? Dark colours and timber or stonework with red or orange tones create a feeling of warmth, while

whitewashed stones or timber and neutrals invoke a cool, breezy feel. Try to stick to a maximum of 3 colours: A main render or paint colour, an accent colour and a trim colour. A maximum of 2 textures is my recommendation if you aim is understated sophistication. Darker colours with a light trim always works well, or alternatively light colours with dark trims but don’t be afraid to try several tones of the one colour once you have tested the colour in differing lights. Always view your selected colours in the early morning, bright daylight as well as at dusk to make sure you are happy with them before you confirm your selections. Getting your exterior colours scheme right, with the perfect colour selection and landscaping will not only be stylish for years to come, but will also add value to your home and cheer you up every time you arrive home.

NEW FORTY WINKS IS NOW OPEN

‘WE DON’T SELL A SLEEP SURFACE, WE SELL A SLEEP SOLUTION,’ EXPLAINS DEBBIE.

On average Australian’s spend around a third of their lives in a bed, but as statistics show as a collective we allocate very little time and money to facilitate quality rest. With over 90 stores Australia wide, Forty Winks have built a reputation based on integrity and industry knowledge. Operating with a clear understanding that every individual is different and every brand is different, their goal is to help their customers make the right choice to meet their needs. Bringing together over 20 years of experience helping Territorians find their perfect bed, store manager Debbie Vaughan and her team attribute their success to a complete focus on specialisation; meaning beds are their business and bedding technology is their passion. ‘Bedding technologies are always advancing and the materials we use today are hugely innovative in many ways. Particularly for the NT, we now have gel infused foam that provides a cooler sleeping surface. To be so successful, we need to be actively out there looking for the newest products on the market to make sure we are at the forefront of the Australian bedding industry.’ Intensive training ensures that the Forty Winks team are consistently up-to-date with trends, new

innovations and right product knowledge. Trained three to four times a year by a representative from each individual brand they sell, the team put in some serious work to maintain their reputation. As Debbie explains, being well informed is their biggest advantage. ‘We live in this community and our reputation is everything. This is why we set aside a lot of time to ensure that our team know their stuff, especially with a lot of incorrect information going around. This is what our reputation is built on; the right information and quality products. Our team’s job is to ensure customers have the right information to choose the right products for their need, We are bedding specialists, not stock movers. We believe in our products and aim to achieve the right results for every customer. ’ After two decades of operation in Darwin, it is this integrity that keeps their customers coming back. From allergies to back problems, couples with two distinctly different comfort needs and everything in between, the Forty Winks team can help their customers select the right mattress and bedding products to not only alleviate discomfort, but most importantly provide the best sleeping solution available on the market.

FIRST HOME BUYER DISCOUNT W H AT I S I T, H O W D O E S I T W O R K A N D H O W W I L L I T I M PAC T M E ?

MOST AUSTRALIANS WHO HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT BUYING THEIR FIRST HOME HAVE HEARD OF THE FIRST HOME OWNER’S GRANT OR FHOG AS IT IS KNOWN IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY. INTRODUCED ON THE 1ST JULY 2000 IT WAS ACTUALLY A MEASURE TO OFFSET THE IMPACT OF THE THEN NEWLY INTRODUCED GST AND MAKE UP FOR THE RESULTING REDUCTION IN THEIR SAVINGS CAPACITY. Since that time I am of the firm belief that local governments across Australia have somewhat lost there way with regards to the grant. Various schemes have sprung up and as residents of the Northern Territory will know, one such scheme is currently in full effect here in the NT where purchase of new housing has been incentivised by increasing the grant in that sector and removing the grant for purchase of existing real estate. All good in theory however pushing first time buyers into this segment of the market comes with some unique risk factors and first time buyers represent that segment of buyers usually least equipped to deal with the risks. Contracts for new housing are often “Off the plan” meaning the settlement date is not known when the buyer signs and may be many months away. Asset values may reduce or financial circumstances may change during this waiting period making the settlement of the property impossible. Heavy financial penalties may be imposed on the buyer and in the majority of circumstances first time buyers are

108

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

just not equipped to deal with these. Construction projects may also carry unique risk with land contracts often being signed on blocks that will not be ready to settle for an unknown period of time not to mention the potential for the builder to go broke during construction leaving the buyer marooned financially with a partially finished construction project and a partially drawn construction loan costing them interest whilst they are still paying rent. These are risks I do not believe first time buyers should be incentivised into taking, in fact, it may be prudent to actively discourage them from going down these paths and the recently announced First Home Buyer Discount does that by offering up to $10,000 in stamp duty concessions to first time buyers who purchase existing real estate. Darwin conveyance industry professional Gaby Vita of Aquarius Conveyancing Fannie Bay says “This decision is a positive step – not only for first home buyers, but for the entire property market. Providing an incentive for first homebuyers to

0402 942 414 • anthony@forwardfinance.com.au GPO Box 4647, Darwin, NT, 0801• www.forwardfinance.com.au

purchase established homes will stimulate the largest section of the property market – that of established homes. Presently, first homebuyers are often left with no other option than to enter into “off the plan contracts” to purchase brand new units or land to build upon. Off the plan contracts place a buyer at risk if their financial position changes for the worse whilst waiting for titles to issue. Allowing first home buyers to purchase existing homes by offering a discount on stamp duty means that they can now enter into lower risk contracts when purchasing.” Shifting the incentives to new housing also had a detrimental impact on the existing property market here in Darwin and across the Northern Territory. Darwin real estate professional Michael Keith of O’Donoghues First National Darwin says “First Home Buyers have comprised a decent proportion of purchasers in the low to middle established real estate price point historically. These properties catered to their budgets and were great properties for first time buyers to cut their teeth in the market. Removal of the grant for established properties removed all incentive for First Home Buyers to even consider these properties with the

much more generous $26,000 grant available for new housing. As a result, numbers at open inspections dried up considerably, sales volume dropped over 50%, and the value of these properties decreased dramatically due to the lack of demand. We’ve seen values in properties drop as much as 20% over the last year since the grant has been taken away.” Yesterday the Northern Territory government thankfully saw the light and took the first step towards action that has been lobbied for by the conveyancers, mortgage brokers and real estate agents of Darwin and the NT. They asked for the grant to be brought back to existing housing and the NT government has listened to some extent. As of the 24th May 2016 first home buyers of the NT may now claim a discount of up to $10,000 for the stamp duty payable on purchase of existing real estate. This is a step in the right direction for first home buyers and with existing real estate now back on the cards first home buyers may once again opt for lower purchase prices, lower risk and lower mortgage stress. Further to this the NT Government opposition are yet to announce their budget reply but it is expected that the opposition will take this one

step further with increased benefits offered to purchase of established properties and perhaps even a separate grant of up to $10,000 for renovations! Keep an eye on the Forward Finance facebook and twitter for more on this. Recently introduced changes to first homebuyer incentives certainly look great on the face of it but there is absolutely no substitute for concise, personalsed advice from a mortgage professional. I have guided many first time buyers through planning their first steps into what can be a very daunting time. My advice is to get the full story well before you make any decisions. Entry costs and potential grants are really only the tip of the iceberg. Understanding how to maximize the benefits of property ownership will lead to good decisions and in turn good results.

SHARE THE PATH

SHARE THE ROAD

As a cyclist on the road we realise that we have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicles. This means that we obey all road rules, use signals, keep to the left and ride predictably. By the same token, we expect that other road users will treat us the same as they would a car or a truck – give way where appropriate, allow plenty of room when overtaking, and generally just be friendly!! Same thing when cycling on a path. Make sure you are aware of your surrounds, whether you are walking or cycling and move off the path if you need to stop. After all, we are all just going about our business getting from one place to another. It makes it faster, easier and safer for everyone if we share the roads responsibly.

• All road and path users need to be alert, predictable and courteous • Motorists need to look out for cyclists and give them plenty of room • Cyclists are allowed to ride on the road and have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists • Share the path safely and look out for each other • Cyclists give way to pedestrians and expect the unexpected • Dogs must be walked on a leash when on shared paths

Located in the heart of Parap Shopping Village, lies a hidden gem that is Country Classics. Established in 1993, this territory owned and operated boutique is one of the longest running in Darwin and embraces originality, offering an alternative to high street fashion. When Joy & Bill Passmore purchased the business in 2004 it was a complete career change for Joy coming from the public service sector. ‘I moved to Darwin in 1974 with my husband Bill to escape the southern winters and just before Cyclone Tracey.’ She couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. An impulse buy, it wasn’t long after getting the keys that Joy recalls thinking ‘wow, what have I gotten myself into,’ laughs Joy. She is extremely proud of her last decade in the business ‘Since 2004, we have grown so much in terms of business operations, profile and customer service’.

COUNTRY CLASSICS ONE DAY I WOULD LOVE TO PASS ON THIS TERRITORY ICON TO THE NEXT OWNER WHO I HOPE ENJOYS THE BUSINESS AS MUCH AS I DO.”

Country Classics has embraced change over the last decade, stocking exquisite and original ladies wear and menswear including must-have classic items such as desk-to-dinner dresses, race day apparel and endless colour and style combinations ranging from size 8 to 18. With an extensive range of Australian and International designers, at affordable prices, each piece is carefully handpicked to ensure everything they stock is suitable for the NT climate. ‘Having stepped into an already established business, there were many factors we had to consider, including what we envisioned the future to be like for Country Classics. Our success has really been about gradual change, understanding why our customers love Country Classics and nurturing that. I think many people take on successful existing businesses with a grand plan to develop and grow. But they change so much so quickly that they find that they don’t relate to their core market anymore.’ Priding themselves on a high level of customer service, unique and quality products, success for Country Classics has really been about well cared for customers. As an advocate for anything community focused, she supports an array of local charity events. Joy has been a past President and member of The Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise for almost 10 years. ‘I love seeing a customer walk out of our store happy. I love the feedback from our diverse customer base ranging from locals to returning interstate visitors.’ So what’s next? She does envision one day retiring to spend more time with her children and grandchildren but for now Joy is as enthusiastic as ever about continuing to grow her business and doing what she loves.

BALANCE...

NATURALLY!

WHAT DOES BALANCE MEAN TO YOU??? DO YOU FIND YOURSELF ALWAYS JUGGLING WORK, KIDS, PARTNER, AFTER SCHOOL/WORK ACTIVITIES, AND HOUSE DUTIES??? IS THIS JUGGLING ACT WHAT YOU CALL BALANCE???

KRISTY HOLLIS Naturopath, Herbalist, Flower Essence Therapist HiCAPS available Board member CMA, member NHAA

While you may be like being Wonder Woman or Superman for a moment or two....this quickly wears thin when it’s your daily reality. Keeping up this pace will sooner or later lead to physical ailments too. Bring balance back into this equation by including some lifestyle rituals. This will naturally slow down the pace and give you ‘breathing space’ ....literally. Health isn’t just about the body....it’s also about your mind and soul too. Taking time out just for you each day is really important. Try waking up in the morning, and really enjoying a cuppa. Put the kettle on and brew a pot of tea or coffee - organic herbal tea would be great! Whilst it’s brewing.....pause

and be mindful of how you’re feeling this morning, be thankful for all that you have in your life. Then really taste your cuppa.... Another great way I try to get clients to take some time-out is to take an Epsom Salt bath as a weekly ritual. Add in some Himalayan Pink Salt and a few drops of your favourite essential oil such as lavender/geranium/jasmine, light some candles and enjoy. This will not only be great to s-l-o-w down....but also supports your adrenal glands with the salts and essential oils, whilst relaxing your muscles and nervous system. And if you don’t have a bath....have a foot bath....then pay some attention to those tootsies! Taking pauses throughout your day will bring balance back into your life, naturally....where’s your pause button?!

SKIN NEEDLING Collagen induction therapy, commonly known as dermal rolling or skin needling produce results that are clinically proven to reshape and reconstruct your natural collagen fibres.

ANTIWRINKLE

CHEMICAL PEELS

Antiwrinkle treatments involve the placement of a purified protein into the muscle that interacts with the chemical reaction that causes our muscles to contract.

Chemical peels are widely used to treat various skin concerns, and aim to freshen and rejuvenate the skin through stimulating new skin growth, improving surface texture and appearance.

DERMAL FILLER

MICRODERMABRASION

Through the latest technologies available, non-permanent dermal fillers are cross-linked, enabling clients to enjoy longevity of results from 6 months to 24 months.

Microdermabrasion aids the skin’s natural process of cellular turnover, through exfoliating the old skin cells from your skin’s surface. New cells regenerate creating vibrant looking skin.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA

DO I HAVE TO BE

FIT TO START?

Since 2009, the Coaches at Crossfit Territory have been the leaders in teaching functional movements. As the first and most experienced Crossfit in the NT, we have developed methods of scaling moments to ensure your safety and development through Crossfits prescription of constantly varied functional movements done at high intensity. We take pride in ensuring that all our members have mechanics and consistency with these mechanics before spicing things up with

intensity. Through this method we offer progressions of functional movements for the beginner, intermediate and advanced. This means you don’t have to be fit to start! There is no need for a ‘beginners class’. As the Head Coach and the Territory’s top Strength and Conditioning Coach, I can safely say 80% of our members scale movements and workouts to suit their fitness level. This ensures a safe and progress solution to getting the fittest you could ever be.

TERRITORY LASER CLINIC Territory Laser Clinic is a specialised skin, laser and cosmetic clinic owned and operated by Holly Copping, the NT’s first fully qualified Dermal Therapist. Joining Holly are two additional Dermal Therapists, Amy Murphy and Stephanie Mac, as well as Sydney based cosmetic injectable specialist Dr Herbert Hooi and Melbourne based cosmetic tattoo artist Lyn O’Connor. Territory Laser Clinic houses stateof-the art laser equipment providing Territorians with access to treatments on par with southern states. In addition, we offer real solutions to skin concerns and provide long-term management plans. “Not all patients have skin issues, explains Holly. Some are looking for ways to slow the ageing process whilst others have cystic acne and are suffering terribly like I did from the age of 12. It was this struggle that made me realise I wanted to help others and give back to the community.

At the age of 29, I enrolled in college and have since completed two degrees. In addition, I’m a IPL/Laser Safety Officer and a Syneron Candela Laser Certified Practitioner because in an unregulated laser industry your safety is our greatest priority.” NT born and bred, Holly understands the impact our hot climate has on your skin. She sees first-hand the issues that arise with living in the Territory and is passionate about creating change and improving other people’s lives. At Territory Laser Clinic we offer a wide range of solutions including difficult to remove Melasma, Rosacea, acne and acne scarring, facial vessels and pigmentation, unwanted hair and tattoos, plus revolutionary anti-ageing skin care products. “We are often the last stop in town, Holly advises. Most patients come to us frustrated, and it’s my absolute mission in life to provide them with the results they are after. I just love making others happy!”

THE COOLSCULPTING PROCEDURE Freeze stubborn fat away, say NO to surgery The CoolSculpting fat freezing and body sculpting procedure is FDA-cleared and contours the body by safely and effectively freezing away unwanted fat for good without surgery or downtime. Sit back, relax, and say goodbye to stubborn fat After you and your physician select the area(s) to be treated, the device is positioned on your body and controlled cooling is applied. During your body sculpting procedure, feel free to read, check email, or even take a nap. Reshape your body You can reduce fat on multiple areas of your body with the CoolSculpting procedure, and additional sessions may further enhance your results. Your therapist will help you create an individualised body sculpting treatment plan tailored just for you. After your Coolsculpting session The CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure is completely non-surgical, so you can typically return to normal activities immediately. Get used to liking what you see In the weeks and months to follow, your body naturally processes and eliminates the treated fat cells. Once the fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good.

During her 25 years in the industry, Dr Kushelew has seen huge changes in the ways fillers are used. She is one of the first cosmetic physicians in Australia to have been trained by Brazilian plastic surgeon Dr Mauricio de Maio, who developed a system known as the MeDical Codes for analysing the face. Dr Kushelew is now using these MD Codes in her clinical cosmetic practice. The Codes, listed below, divide the face into distinct anatomical units, and treat these units with certain injection sites to get optimum results:

FOR THE UPPER AND MID-FACE:

Her clients vary in age, from younger women who are interested in prevention and “beautification”, to middle-aged and older women who want to look the best for their age. “It’s not about necessarily looking younger, but the best you can as you get older,” Dr Kushelew says. “The most important thing is the initial facial assessment using MD Codes, and continuing to reassess as the patient ages.”

Dr Kushelew has a national reputation for her attention to detail.

• 8 point lift • 5 point cheek reshape • 3 point tear troughs reshape • 2 point temple reshape • 3 point lateral orbital reshape around the eyes •

FOR THE LOWER FACE:

• 3 point nasolabial reshape • 8 point lip reshape • 3 point marionette • 6 point chin reshape • 5 point jawline reshape

WHAT ARE THE MEDICAL CODES™? The face can be split into distinct anatomical units

The MD Codes™ are a series of predefined injection sites (subunits) within each anatomical unit

MEAL PREPPING HAS BECOME VERY POPULAR IN THE LAST FEW YEARS IN AUSTRALIA, AND FORMALLY A TOOL USED BY ATHLETES AND BODYBUILDERS TO GAIN PERFORMANCE AND DROP WEIGHT AND BODY FAT. NOW, IT HAS BECOME AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE TO GAIN THE EDGE IN THE FIGHT FOR A BEAUTIFUL BODY OR TO SIMPLY SHED A FEW KILOS.

WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY? Meal prep can be broken into two categories;

1 2

weighed and measured, by counting macros of protein, carbohydrates and fats and meals designed to be healthy and nutritious that are not measured.

WEIGHED AND MEASURED MEALS

Although this seems a straight forward concept, it can be misleading to many. All foods such as steak, fish, broccoli, green beans, almonds and macadamia have different macro amounts thus some brands out there can be very misleading. For example: If I had 100g in weight of carbohydrate in brown rice and 100g in weight of carbohydrate in sweet potato, the grams of macro per carb amount varies. Some brands will specify the meals in

A SANDPIT WHAT YOU NEED: Lumber sleepers Bags of sand Nails or spikes Pegs (wooden) Stones, rocks or course gravel

162

Placing a sandpit in your yard is a fantastic idea to entertain the kids, plus it’s affordable and easy to build. With the right tools, materials, some basic carpentry skills and of course sand, you can give your kids the perfect spot where they can enjoy playing outside. In fact, you can even ask your kids to help you out while you build your family’s very own sandpit. Another fun thing to do with the sand is to colour it with chalk, all it takes is a hard surface, some chalk and some sand, rub away at it and voila! Store in a glass jar for a layered effect. Lots of fun with the kiddies :) 1. CHOOSE YOUR SITE Choosing where exactly you are going to build your sandpit is determined by, first and foremost, just how much space you have in your yard. Think of where the kids will have the most fun. Also, place it where it is going to be easy to keep an eye on them even if you’re inside. Spots that can be seen with a quick peek through a window is a good spot. You should also think about planting near trees, which will be able to provide protection from the sun. If you don’t have a tree that can provide your kids with shade, don’t worry because you can always install a shade sail. Once you’ve decided on just where and how large your sandpit is going to be, you can call one of your local sand suppliers and order your sand. Most good sand suppliers should be able to tell you just

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

how much sand you’re going to need if you give them the dimensions of your planned sandpit. 2. PREPARING YOUR SITE While you are waiting for your sand supplier to deliver your sand, you can prepare your site by excavating your desired area. You can dig to about 200mm below the ground level. Remember not to throw your precious top soil just anywhere, scatter over other places in your garden or throw it into the compost heap. Once you are done excavating, you should prepare a flat bed where the sand suppliers (or you yourself ) can lay down your sand. You may encounter some drainage problems if your subsoil is clay or hard pan. If this is the case, what you should do is to dig a deep hole in the middle where water can go. Then place

some rocks and crushed rocks inside the hole. 3. PLACE YOUR SLEEPERS Next you can lay out your timber sleepers (of course, by this time, you’ve had your sleepers cut to your chosen sizes). Place them level on the ground and secure them together with nails or spikes. You might need some pegs to secure the sleepers in place, depending on whether the sleepers are raised well above the ground level or not. 4. FILL THE PIT When you are done laying out your sleepers, you can start filling in your sand. Instead of asking the sand suppliers to fill the pit with sand, get your kids to help out and make it a family project. Finally, when you’ve put all the sand in, your kids can start having some real fun.

Top End Medical Centre

THE 28TH OF APRIL 2016 MARKED THE OPENING OF TOP END MEDICAL CENTRE’S THIRD LOCATION IN ROSEBERY, PALMERSTON IN UNDER FIVE YEARS.

Call us today to book your appointment on: 1300 4 DOCTORS or (08) 8930 4900 Stuart Park • (08) 8995 7900 Casuarina • (08) 8997 6500 Rosebery • www.topendmedicalcentre.com.au

TOP END MEDICAL CENTRE To determine this exponential growth, we must go back to where it all began, and how we identified what patients were lacking in the health sector. December 2011 saw the flagship clinic in Casuarina open its doors to the community of the Northern Suburbs in Darwin, and the response to our Bulk Billing services were such that our original clinic quickly expanded to two clinics at one site on 2/11 Vanderlin Drive. It was immediately apparent that what patients needed was a quality, affordable and accessible health service that contradicted any misconceptions about the standard of care a bulk billing practice could provide. Since then, Top End Medical Centre has been servicing the Darwin community with quality, affordable and reliable healthcare in a modern and convenient setting. January 2014 saw the opening of our second location in 1/44 Stuart Highway, Stuart Park. The expansion enabled us to increase our services and offer Specialist appointments from Stuart Park without the lengthy waiting time. The addition of Ophthalmology, Clinical Psychology, Paediatric services and Remedial Massage therapy has transformed our business model into a holistic

experience for our patients. Our third facility in Rosebery was a recognition of the status of Palmerston, being the second largest city in the Northern Territory. Our research has determined the Palmerston area to be the fastest population growth area in Australia. The number of doctors in the Palmerston/Litchfield area is .58 per 1000 people as opposed to the Darwin area of 1.58 and the National average of 2.28. Located at 164 Forrest Parade Rosebery, in a boutique shopping complex with IGA, The Corner Bakery and Your Smile Dental, Top End Medical Centre Rosebery is a purpose built medical centre that will continue the excellent customer service offered to our patients in Stuart Park and Casuarina. In addition, our patients can avail of free basement carpark facilities, for added convenience and accessibility. Our doctors at the Rosebery Clinic are General Practitioners with a special interest in, Skin Cancer Care, Travel Medicine, Family Medicine, Women and Men’s health. The Rosebery clinic is open extended hours, Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 6pm. Top End Medical Centres offer affordable quality health care, bulk billing services, and on site pathology.

Our service extends not only to our patients but also to our Health Providers. Our focus is centred towards the development and education of GP Registrars, Medical Students and Nursing Students who are as committed as we are towards their continued professional development. We are an NTGPE accredited training facility and work closely with Charles Darwin University to create a culture of learning and support.

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM.AU

IF YOU SEARCH FOR INFORMATION ABOUT CHILDREN AS AUTHORS YOU WILL FIND THERE IS NOT A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE – OR MANY CHILDREN WHO ARE AUTHORS. THERE ARE MANY ARTICLES ABOUT WRITING FOR CHILDREN, BUT LITTLE ABOUT CHILDREN AS AUTHORS OR AUTHORS WHO ARE CHILDREN.

For further information about the series or purchasing a copy of a book or the series, please email childrens.books@essington.nt.edu.au, or phone: 08 8985 0100

There is however, a school of thought that says to have high literacy skills children not only need to be regular readers, but best understand literacy when they become writers themselves. In 2016 The Essington School Darwin sought to extend some of their high achieving primary school students. This was achieved by putting them through a creative writing program with a published author with the aim of them writing and publishing their own book. Principal David Cannon said, “Joanne van Os, a published writer and past parent of the School, was invited to become our Writer in Residence at The Essington School Darwin in 2016. This followed several years of her working with Middle School students from the School in our School’s July Vacation School Program. In this program she taught smaller groups about creative writing, and coaching them in their writing”. Children’s Picture Story Book Series The challenge set for Joanne van Os was to work with interested students in Years 4, 5 and 6 to coach them to write a children’s picture story book aimed at children of three to six years of age. Joanne said: “While the task initially may have seemed easy for the selected students, the reality of developing a story narrative in just a few pages with just a few lines on each page proved to be a challenge”. Students had to first research their area of writing and topic, develop a story line that would hold the interest of a three to six year old child, and then complete it – and with a message! With some anxieties, Joanne took on the task of being Editor for this series of ten children’s picture story books. It was decided to base the series around every day animals that children in Darwin and the tropics might come across: green tree frogs, geckos, green ants, frill neck lizards, crocodiles, plovers, magpie geese, rainbow lorikeets, sea turtles, and sugar gliders. It was also decided that the picture story books would present positive values in the story about friends, families, helping others, and working together.

SELECTING AN ILLUSTRATOR Joan Andropov, a past grand-parent of the School, had produced some great paintings of green ants and tree frogs for The Essington School Darwin’s unique Medical Centre, a general practice medical facility at the School. These caught the eye of Principal, David Cannon, and Joan was invited to illustrate the ten books. Joan and husband, Simon, run a very popular and busy bed and breakfast facility within a block of the School so the thought of taking on such a task for the first time, on top of her bed and breakfast business, was initially daunting. After many questions and reflections, Joan agreed to be the illustrator for the series. The step from being a hobby artist to illustrating children’s picture books was about to begin. The daunting task involved creating over eighty different illustrations of ten different animals doing a multitude of things in each story. STEPPING UP TO THE CHALLENGE Initially students came up with stories that would have filled a novel and had many and complex plots. As they faced the challenge of capturing a story in a few pages and with limited words, they slowly focused on the difficult task of becoming a children’s picture book author. The stories were gradually completed and the first text from the stories began to reach Joan Andropov’s art easel. She then, after discussions with Joanne van Os, the editor of the series, discussed the illustrations for each page of the picture book. Gradually the words of the stories written by the children came to life at the end of Joan’s watercolour paint brush, and the developing stories leapt off the pages of each book. Two of the story books in the series are also being translated in to Bahasa Indonesian and Japanese and will be printed for children at the School from Indonesia and Japan, and for distribution by The Essington School Darwin as a gift to its sister schools in these countries. OBTAINING BOOKS IN THE SERIES The unique series of ten children’s picture books on local Darwin and Northern Territory animals are available from the Darwin Book Shop and the Museum Book Shop in Darwin from late August.

WRITING FOR

CHLOE COOPER

(YEAR 5)

“I really enjoyed working with Joanne to write my story because she helped me improve my writing techniques. She gave me tips on how to write stories”. “One of the things I enjoyed was learning to write for a different age group. The hardest part was keeping the story at a level that would be good for children of 3 to 5 years of age, and picking words they knew”. “I loved Joan’s illustrations for my story and think they captured the heart of my story. She interpreted the words really well and they helped tell the story”.

(YEAR 6)

“Writing the story was a dream which I never thought could come true. At times it was hard, but Joanne was so patient, dedicated and helpful and that gave me the strength to keep going”. “The hardest part of the experience was writing simply for young readers. I really had to strip back my writing to basics before I could get the story right”. “At first ideas, all half done, run in to your head like a river in full rush, and then you start to narrow them down. Slowly the story develops and also the characters”. “Coming up with ideas is really just getting letting them come, choosing a few, developing them, selecting your favourite outline, and soon you are the author of a book you love”.

CHILDREN VARY IN THEIR WRITING STYLE BECAUSE OF THE DIVERSE INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCES OF THE CHILDREN WRITING THE STORIES. THEIR STYLE IS OFTEN INFORMAL, CONVERSATIONAL, AND IN PLAIN AND CLEAR LANGUAGE. WHEN IT COMES TOGETHER THIS MAKES THE TEXT EASY AND ENJOYABLE TO READ.”

HARVEY WHITE

(YEAR 6)

“The hardest part was when I was trying to make the story simple and easy to read. This was because I love to write stories that are in depth and complicated”. “It took me a while to find an idea for the story but once I had my first idea of a frog called Sam, I just kept writing until I finished”. “It was amazing writing with a proper author who had written and published their own books”.

RAJ FORDYCE

(YEAR 5)

“The hardest part was thinking of a story that young children would like”. “To come up with a story, I first thought about the characteristics of birds then the characteristics of magpie geese. I then thought I wanted two settings, so came up with these and all the ideas came together”. “Joan’s drawings matched my ideas really well. They looked like everything I had imagined in my words”.

At Brisbane Grammar School we have developed a range of flexible boarding options which reflect the varying needs of our community. These options include: Harlin House is a seven day a week boarding house, with the majority of our boys living in the house as full-time boarders. Most boys will choose to stay in to take full advantage of the excellent academic, pastoral and activities programs. Naturally though, leave arrangements are flexible and boys can enjoy leave for all or part of most weekends. This can be conveniently organised through our online leave application system, with approval from parents, the Director of Boarding, and, where appropriate, the host family. Midweek leave for family dinners or special occasions can also easily be arranged. Our flexible boarding options include short term boarding places for periods ranging

from weeks to an entire term. These short term boarding positions often appeal to boys and parents during times of intense school commitment. No commuting time, provision of transport to and from school venues and a nightly program of academic enrichment make this an appealing option for families wanting to streamline the competing demands of school life. Rowing families have found this particularly helpful in Term 1, although boys across all areas of sport and other extracurricular demands have taken advantage of this flexible boarding option. For further details regarding the fee structure and specific arrangements of the above options, please contact the Director of Enrolments, Mr Jamie Smith, on (07) 3834 5200 or the Director of Boarding, Mr Simon Hill on (07) 3834 5225.

“WE’VE GOT A REALLY GOOD PRODUCT, AND WE WANT PEOPLE IN DARWIN AND PALMERSTON TO KNOW ABOUT IT,” SAYS PRINCIPAL ANDREW MANNING. “WE DO A GREAT JOB AT LOOKING AFTER AND CARING FOR OUR KIDS, AND WE’RE A GREAT PLACE ACADEMICALLY.” ALTHOUGH “GREAT” MIGHT BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT.

In addition to high quality science, music and sport facilities, and strong christian values, Marrara offers a very unique education program. From Pre-school through to Year 10, students participate in traditional style schooling, with high academic standards. For Years 11 and 12, students are also offered the exciting opportunity to become part of The Trade Training Centre, which offers a hands-on experience for students who don’t see traditional school as suiting their future direction. While The Trade Training Centre is built around trade, it ensures students who participate receive their education certifications, too. “We recognise that good education is much broader than getting a good ATAR,” says Principal Andrew Manning. “We are passionate about partnering and co-educating with parents to help them grow kids that are great people, and with a wealth of knowledge”. The curriculum at Marrara and the Trade Training Centre has been built on ensuring students leave college with all the necessary educational requirements, as well as real, practical work experience that will set them up for jobs and a successful long term career path. “Our kids have an advantage,” says Head of FACTTC, Richard Hart and that is a key to their success at Marrara Christian College and its Fabrication & Construction Trade Training Centre. ONSHORE GAS TO POWER KNOWLEDGE TERRITORY THE TERRITORY GOVERNMENT HAS UNVEILED ITS PLAN TO HARNESS THE POWERFUL POTENTIAL OF THE ONSHORE GAS INDUSTRY TO MAKE THE TERRITORY SMARTER AND MORE PROSPEROUS THROUGH INCREASED INVESTMENT IN TRAINING AND HIGHER EDUCATION.

The Government has launched a suite of initiatives aimed to transform the NT into the “Knowledge Territory”. Key Knowledge Territory initiatives include: • A new higher education cadetship program will see the NT Government subsidise student wages for up to 12 weeks per calendar year, paying salary costs to the employer. • A Knowledge Territory Study Voucher will be paid to apprentices and trainees to assist with the cost of buying work wear and other necessities during their first year. • When onshore gas royalty funding flows, the Knowledge Territory study vouchers for 15,000 students will be expanded and increased in value. • Higher education scholarships will be increased from $5000 to $10,000 per year for the duration of a degree, once onshore gas royalties flow. Chief Minister Adam Giles said Knowledge Territory

was designed to ensure that every Territorian has access to quality education and training that provide opportunities for a prosperous future. “Knowledge Territory initiatives will be funded by a combination of reprioritising existing funding and through the Education Future Fund, utilising future royalties earned through onshore gas development,” Mr Giles said. “We will grow our education, training, research and innovation sectors so they provide real career pathways and choices for Territorians. “There is potential for this to grow significantly under the Country Liberals as gas royalties start to flow.” The study vouchers program will be in place from 1 January 2017 and expanded in future years when gas royalties rise. Mr Giles said other initiatives will be unveiled in the upcoming Budget that support science and innovation.

OUR COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION WILL ENSURE TERRITORIANS HAVE ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES TO ENSURE THEY ARE EQUIPPED FOR TOMORROW’S JOBS,” HE SAID.

Oscar has made it to the U14 tennis national quarter finals (eighth best in Australia) and went to South Africa in 2010 as part of the team for Australia’s bid to host the Soccer World Cup. As an NT Institute of Sport junior tennis player, balance and a calm focus is what enables Oscar to stay on the ball when juggling the highest academic subjects, competing at a national level in tennis and spending time with his mates. Who inspires Oscar? Without hesitation Oscar says “Roger Federer, his determination, calm and stylish approach, he looks like he is enjoying what he does with ease.” Arriving at Casuarina Senior College from Dripstone Middle School, Oscar says ‘I want to go to an Australian university

CHOOSING OPPORTUNITY Sports and Performing Arts As a triplet Zoe Jaenke is one outstanding 16 year old. Zoe, a student in the Centre for Excellence Elite Sports Program (ESP) at Casuarina Senior College, comes from a family of BMX riders competing at an Australian level. In 2015, Zoe ranked fifth in her age group. Zoe loves the performing arts, arguing the fact and persuasive writing. Opportunity resonates with Year 11 student Zoe in all areas of her life. Zoe’s weekly workload is impressive, completing Stage 1 (Year 11) and a Certificate III in Fitness, fulfilling Year 11 College Captain duties, NT Music School rehearsals, Gold Dukes, BMX training and competitions, umpiring netball, part time work and writing a short stories in her spare time. programs. I was thinking of being a music or performing arts teacher or physio. When I looked at Casuarina Senior College online there were so many opportunities” says Zoe. As an inaugural Elite Sport Program student athlete, Zoe says “I was so excited at the opportunity to be accepted into the Elite Sport Program. I am on track to successfully complete Cert III in Fitness and go to Cert IV next year to complete my NTCET with an ATAR and as a qualified personal trainer, which is amazing”. Zoe says she balances her diverse workload by eating healthily and getting to bed early. “Nothing’s a problem and I can’t say no to an opportunity, I adjust my hours for each commitment where I can, stay up later to get assignments done but head to bed earlier the next night.” “I feel very fortunate to have so many opportunities created by my parents, the College and my caring teachers” says Zoe.

HENBURY SCHOOL IS A STRONG AND VIBRANT SPECIAL NEEDS MIDDLE/ HIGH SCHOOL. WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON OUR INNOVATIVE AND DIVERSE PROGRAMS.

CAROLINE AT THE OP SHOP

The school’s aim is to provide opportunities for all students with special needs to become active participants and contributors to the community. In 2010 Henbury, in conjunction with the Darwin Convention Centre, we hosted the inaugural “Henbury Corporate Luncheon”. This was a huge success- it is now known as Darwin’s Biggest Corporate Christmas Party! The generosity of previous guests has enabled our school to build on our innovative programs through the purchase of: equipment for our Sensory rooms; specialised musical instruments and resources to further enrich our music therapy programs, iPads for every student, and innovative Tobii Eye Gaze technology (which allows our students to communicate with the power of their eyes). Money raised in 2015 contributed to the expansion of our Enterprise

THE COFFEE CREW

Education Programs which include our Henbury Op Shop, Gardening Crew, Coffee Crew, our textiles and screen printing business “Senseational Designs” and a new hairdressing business. Our goal is to continue to eliminate barriers for all our students. Students with a disability encounter daily obstacles which make it difficult for them to participate fully in school, leisure and community life. Public events and functions should be available to everyone. In 2016 we aim to raise $80 000 to outfit a purpose built bus so our students can experience inclusion in education, recreation and community life. A Special Needs bus that allows four students in wheelchairs, as well as ambulatory students, to travel together will improve personal wellbeing and lead to enhanced “social capital” by engaging more people in the community and better reflecting community diversity.

For a Sponsorship Package or more information on how you can be involved, please contact Henbury School on 8997 7077.

PALMERSTON REGIONAL HOSPITAL

PALMERSTON PETER CHANDLER IS A CHAMPION FOR THE PALMERSTON COMMUNITY. AS THE COUNTRY LIBERALS MEMBER FOR BRENNAN SINCE 2008, HE HAS ALWAYS PUT THE PEOPLE OF THE ELECTORATE FIRST, IN ADDITION TO FULFILLING HIS DUTIES AS A MINISTER OF THE CROWN. Peter’s passion for Northern Territory politics stems directly from his time as the Chair of the Bakewell Primary School Council. In this role Peter found himself increasingly frustrated with the high level bureaucracy involved in making localised decisions in schools and was disappointed with the lack of commitment to improving infrastructure in a growing Palmerston.

TIGER BRENNAN DRIVE

As the Member for Brennan in the Country Liberals Government, Peter is honoured to hold the Ministerial Offices of Education, Transport, Infrastructure, Essential Services and Veterans Support. As a Minister he has shown an unwavering commitment to the Palmerston region and this is evidenced by the quantity of government initiatives occurring in Palmerston at present. Transport Palmerston is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia. The Northern Territory Government recognises this growth and is committed to planning the future of Palmerston in a manner that best caters for the community. As Palmerston residents are aware, the road networks need to keep pace with the rapid development. Palmerston locals can see this development first hand with the advancement of Tiger Brennan Drive. The duplication of the road continues to progress, which will ease traffic congestion for commuters travelling to and from Darwin City. In addition to the Tiger Brennan Drive duplication project, there are six major road projects underway or recently completed, including: •The extension of the Tiger Brennan Drive off-ramp to Roystonea Avenue. This was constructed by local NT company DAC Enterprises Pty Ltd and works were completed in April. •The construction of a third outbound lane on Roystonea Avenue from the Tiger Brennan Drive Overpass to Temple Terrace is underway. This work is to be undertaken concurrently with the Gateway access project. The contract for $12.8 million has been awarded to local NT company BMD Urban Pty Ltd. • Roystonea Avenue and Temple Terrace intersection upgrade and associated works will include duplication of Roystonea Avenue to Terry Drive. This project will increase capacity at the traffic signals at Temple Terrace and duplicate Temple Terrace between Roystonea Avenue and the Stuart Highway. The construction contract valued at $10.3 million was awarded to local NT company

Allan King and Sons Construction. Landscaping works will also be undertaken throughout these work zones to enhance the aesthetics of the road network. Planning works are also underway with a $6 million new addition to the 2016-17 Budget to improve access for heavy vehicles with an intersection upgrade planned for Pinelands. Completed upgrades will result in improved traffic flow for all users. Infrastructure The Government is delivering on strategic developments; including the Palmerston Regional Hospital. To date over 20 packages of works have been awarded to local contractors for this project. On average there are 65 people on site daily with the number expected to peak at approximately 300. Once complete this 116 bed two level hospital will transform the health offering to those residing in Palmerston and the rural area. It is an exciting time to be living in Palmerston, especially with the construction of the Gateway Shopping Centre underway. There are many commercial developments in progress or on the horizon. Education Schools in Palmerston have continued to flourish through the Northern Territory Government’s strategic educational reform. Over the last three and a half years the Department of Education has been implementing an extensive reform agenda, considering the research; listening to principals and the teaching profession; and looking at what the best countries around the world are doing. Independent Public Schools This government has made innovative changes to the way our schools operate by increasing school autonomy. Independent Public Schools remain in the Northern Territory Government school system but benefit from increased flexibility, responsibility and innovation. Palmerston Independent Public Schools: • Bakewell Primary School

• Durack Primary School • Palmerston Secondary College Investment in Special Education This government has made a significant and important investment in special needs education to meet the growing educational demands of students with high support and additional needs in Palmerston. Construction is underway for the new $21.35 million special school in Bellamack. This project is on track to be completed in Semester 2 of 2016. The state of the art school will provide 84 preschool and primary school places for students. A new Primary School for Palmerston This government recognises the growing demand for enrolment places in Palmerston primary schools and has allocated a capital grant of $21.2 million to support the construction of a Catholic primary school in Zuccoli. The new school will be located on a shared site with a future government primary school and will contain common use facilities and spaces for community activities. Boosting our Economy – Education Works package As part of the $100 million Boosting our Economy package, $68.5 million was invested in growing and renewing government and non-government school facilities right across the Territory. Palmerston schools have benefited from this investment with various upgrades to school infrastructure across the region. Some highlights include: • Moulden Park Primary School landscaping and new paths • Rosebery Middle School - installation of a basketball court, shelter and tier seating • Rosebery Primary School - new library learning centre • Bakewell Primary School - expand and refurbish administration and student services building, install large multipurpose playground and a kiss and go for parent drop-off • Gray Primary School, Moulden Park Primary School and Palmerston Senior College - upgrade fire & potable water pipes

Birth has become a hidden life event and stories from women and the media have increased the perception of intense, unmanageable pain and life threatening emergencies. Spare a moment to consider the possibility that this perception stems in part from the commonplace use of drugs to induce labour or speed it up. These drugs bring on very strong, intense contractions that are different to those experienced by a naturally birthing woman. Working through fears and reconnecting with the inherent ability of a woman’s body to birth has become a fundamental part of preparing for a natural (normal) birth in Australia in 2016. In 2016 parents have a myriad of medical interventions to learn about and it is recommended to understand the policies and philosophies of various caregivers and birth environments when making

decisions about where to birth. Choice is a wonderful thing but it does mean putting in some time researching how it is possible to achieve the birth experience you desire. Informed choice means having a clear understanding of risks and benefits. Actively and knowledgeably participating throughout birth can have an empowering effect on parents. Birth is a complex topic and first time parents tend to struggle with what questions to ask their care provider. Reading evidence-based books such as Birth with Confidence by Rhea Dempsey or Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by famous Midwife Ina May Gaskin is an excellent starting place to get a good overview of birth. Darwin and Palmerston families can access the Childbirth Education Association’s Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting Library free of charge at the Nightcliff Community Centre.
