These commitments were developed in consultation with the Darwin and Palmerston communities during my first three years as Member for Solomon, when the Coalition was in opposition. Between 2010 and 2013 I conducted countless community meetings, held electoral listening posts and door-knocked constantly to understand the key issues and then seek the support of my Coalition colleagues for funding. Number one was improved health services – and I was able to secure from the Coalition the $110 million the Northern Territory Government needed to build the new Palmerston Regional Hospital. The hospital will be a fantastic facility. The site proposed by the previous Labor Government allowed little room for growth so it was relocated to a greenfield site near the Stuart Highway and Temple Terrace. The number of beds was expanded from 60 under Labor to 116. Roads were another key concern, with access into and out of Darwin, Palmerston and the Rural Area at peak hour a source of frustration. The previous Labor Government had shelved its commitment to complete the Tiger Brennan Drive duplication between the CBD and Berrimah Road – but I breathed new life into the project with a $70 million funding pledge. Anybody who has driven past the project will see what a significant effort has gone into the project and I look
forward to it opening in July. Aged care is emerging as an increasing concern in Solomon and recently the Commonwealth announced more than $10 million would be spent increasing bed places in Darwin and Palmerston. Over the past three years I officially opened the Jingili BMX track roof, secured Commonwealth funding to upgrade Parap pool, supported new amenities for Warren Park and backed numerous community-based projects from shade cloth to showers. As we move towards the 2016 election, the key message I am hearing is jobs. The Northern Territory, like the rest of the country, is transitioning out of the resources boom and the Turnbull Government will ensure there is a smooth landing. As well, the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility commits $5 billion in major project funding – which also means more jobs. Only the Coalition can be trusted to deliver on the recommendations contained in the Government’s Defence White Paper which commits $20 billion in defence spending in the Northern Territory over the next 20 years. I will make it my priority to work with the Turnbull Government to ensure Darwin and Palmerston remain strong, prosperous communities and great places to live and raise a family.

BRENDAN SOUTHWICK
CROSSFIT TERRITORY
CrossFit is renowned for pushing the mind and body to the limits. As the director and head coach of CrossFit Territory, 32 year old Brendan Southwick sees this every day. It’s watching his clients achieve what they never thought was possible that drives his passion for health and fitness, and helping others reach their goals. “We use body weight exercises, weighted exercises, conditioning exercises and our program is constantly varied, containing functional movements at high intensity,” says Brendan. Brendan has competed in CrossFit and weightlifting competitions nationally, and says the training is the perfect preparation when strength, correct form and mental clarity are needed. Serving in the Army for 10 years, being functionally fit was a high priority for Brendan and his colleagues. He was introduced to the CrossFit world by friends in training for the Special Forces, and soon became hooked. “I’ve been doing it for seven years now, and I love it,” says Brendan. “It helps you live a more functional life, gets you functionally fit, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or advanced, if everyone made some little changes like this we would have a healthier population. Adopting a safety first approach, Brendan and his coaches always ensure their clients have good mechanics and are consistent in their form before adding intensity. “Whether you’re helping someone jump, throw or pick up something correctly, it’s all extremely rewarding,” says Brendan.

Brendan has been the Northern Territory's leading competitor for Crossfit and Olympic Weightlifting for the past eight years and at 32 years of age shows no signs of slowing down. With a lifetime best total of 145kg snatch and 170kg at 85kg bodyweight he is the NT's most physically powerful athlete. Coach B is also a national competitor in the sport of Crossfit having placed previously as 4th fittest in the Pacific and is currently poised to do better in the 2016 season.

AMY DARGAN
WITHNALLS
More than twelve months after completing her studies at CDU, 23 year-old Amy Dargan’s dream to become a lawyer is now a reality. “For as long as I can remember I’ve had an interest in the law,” she says. “Law is integral in all aspects of our lives. An understanding of law provides an insight into people and common concerns in society.” Amy always “enjoyed English and legal studies”, completing them at school before working at NT Legal Aid whilst studying law. Soon after, Amy secured employment at Withnalls Lawyers. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity Withnalls Lawyers has provided to me. Vanessa Farmer is exceptionally knowledgeable and I am constantly learning from her” she says. For Amy, it’s a particularly wonderful thing to practice law in the Territory. She’s a territory girl who “understands the lifestyle of Territorians”. The smaller Territory jurisdiction is the perfect one for Amy as she can pursue a fulfilling professional career in the town she grew up in. “I love everything the Territory has to offer,” she says. “Particularly the camping and fishing, it’s a really enjoyable place to live.”
Amy Dargan is living her dream, and in her own backyard. “It can be done!”
JESS & SAMANTHA
COSMETIC INJECTABLES
Around the world, minimally invasive anti-aging technologies are fast becoming an effective method in enhancing and maintaining one’s natural beauty. Registered Nurses and twin sisters Samantha and Jessica, Territorian’s at heart having grown up in Katherine, moved to Brisbane 10 years ago. It was where they both worked in leading cosmetic clinics gaining valuable knowledge and experience, further completing their graduate certificate in Cosmetic Nursing through AACDS. With a background of over eight years in Emergency Nursing, Jessica and Samantha believe emergency medicine has taught them the importance of life’s simplest pleasures. All aspects of our bodies require nurturing to promote optimal health, and the skin is no different. Jessica says, “It is through education and awareness that we base our foundation of practice”. Throughout our nursing careers we have had first hand experience in the aging process and it is evident now more then ever that “prevention is the key to aging gracefully”. The sisters say despite the distance, the Northern Territory should have affordable access to the same healthcare advances as the rest of Australia. At Cosmetic Injectables Darwin they believe looking and being your best at any age is achievable. They are passionate about providing you with word class anti-aging treatments proven to achieve results. www.cosmeticinjectablesdarwin.com.au

CRAIG PAULSEN
SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPIST
After completing a 3-month stint in Katherine as part of his Physiotherapy degree, Craig Paulsen and his wife Jess decided to escape the rat race of Sydney and move to Darwin. He began working at Territory Sportsmedicine in 2009 and enjoys the team environment. “It’s great for the patients, as they can get their treatment from whoever is the best in that particular area,” Craig says. Craig enjoys the problem solving part of the job and trying to come up with an individual plan for each person. He is a confident Physiotherapist, who cares about his clients needs. “It’s actually not about me. The first thing I do is find out what my patient wants; whether it’s a diagnosis, rehab or whether they want to compete next week and work from there.” Craig enjoys being active and has been doing Crossfit for three years, and also loves the challenge that comes with competing in marathons. “I’m training for my fifth marathon this year, so I’m personally working on my own goals and training to improve myself. “So I can relate to my patient’s desires to get back on track with their fitness goals, while respecting their injury and treating it appropriately.” Craig is the current Physiotherapist for NT Thunder in the NEAFL. He has also worked with NT Storm Netball in the Australian National League and has worked with the NT Mosquitos in Rugby Union.
HEADACHE AND MANIPULATION RECENTLY I FOUND A RESEARCH PAPER CONDUCTED BY A GROUP OF PHYSIOTHERAPISTS IN AMERICA WHICH COMPARED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MANIPULATION VERSUS MOBILISATION AND EXERCISE FOR TREATMENT OF HEADACHE AMONGST A GROUP OF 110 PEOPLE. Dunning J.R. et al. Upper cervical and upper thoracic manipulation versus mobilization and exercise in patients with cervicogenic headache. BMC Musculoskelet Disorders. Feb 6. 17(1):64. 2016
The primary outcome measured in this study was the patient’s headache intensity. Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire to indicate the average intensity of their headache pain on a scale of 1-10 at the beginning of the study in addition to their intensity at 1-week, 1-month, and 3-months following the initial treatment session. Secondary outcome measures included a disability questionnaire, headache frequency, headache duration, and medication intake. On the initial visit patients completed all outcome measures then received the first treatment session. Patients completed 6–8 treatment sessions of either manipulation of the upper neck and upper back, or mobilization of the same areas combined with exercises over a 4 week period. The exact areas of the spine to be treated were left to the discretion of the treating therapist and it was based on the combination of patient reports and examination. The exercises given to the second group was neck flexion exercises during treatment, and 10 minutes take home resistance exercises using a resistance band within their own tolerance. This study is the first clinical trial to directly compare the effectiveness of both neck and upper back manipulation versus mobilisation and exercise in patients with headache. The results suggest 6–8 sessions of manipulation over 4 weeks, directed mainly to both the upper neck and upper back, resulted in greater improvements in all aspects of the patients headache than the mobilisation/ exercise group. This included headache intensity, disability, headache frequency, headache duration, and medication intake. Most importantly the effects of manipulation were maintained at 3 months followup. Additionally there were no adverse reactions to either group aside from mild discomfort either at the point of manipulation/mobilisation or post exercise, which is completely normal in clinical practice. The underlying mechanisms as to why manipulation may have resulted in greater improvements than Contact your local CAA NT member Chiropractor today for an assessment. Marc Cova. Insight Chiropractic
D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 16
mobilisation plus exercise is still under investigation. In addition our current thinking about how manipulation affects patients positively in clinical practice delves into neurology far more deeply than what is possible in this column. More than likely it has something to do with joint receptors being stimulated which leads to pain reduction, greater range of motion and less muscle spasm. Fortunately in clinical practice patients will vote with their feet. Meaning that if a patient feels like they have improved they will continue to seek Chiropractic care when needed. Consequently they will continue to refer other patients to Chiropractors, telling their family and friends about the benefits they have received from care. Of course we’d all like to fully understand the precise mechanisms behind why what we do works, however it is up to researchers to investigate that process further. In clinical practice it’s up to us Chiropractors to keep providing the best service and treatment possible thereby improving clinical knowledge that drives further research and evidence. Clinical practice will always be a driver for research, not vice versa. This is a very important study and it again builds on the body of knowledge demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of spinal manipulation as a treatment for a variety of spinal related complaints, in this instance headache. It is becoming clearer that if there are any individuals, be they either members of the public or other health professionals that still doubt the validity of spinal manipulation as a treatment for spinal related disorders then I would suggest they are demonstrating that they no experience or knowledge of the topic at hand and should be ignored. Do you or someone you know have a history of headache, if so Chiropractic care may be able to help. Chiropractors have a great deal of experience in dealing with different forms of headache and as indicated by the research, spinal manipulation, which Chiropractors specialise in, can be a very effective form of therapy for headache pain. For years it was thought obesity was a direct cause for chronic diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. However, recent studies are finding that obesity may-in-fact just be a marker of disease, just like having high blood pressure. The true cause being a form of long-term, lowgrade inflammation known as “metaflammation”. Whilst being overweight or obese does increase your risk factor for disease significantly, your immune system may very well be the real driver behind it. So this long-term inflammation is the cause. Inflammation is actually one of the body’s key defense mechanisms, and is most noticeable when we are sunburnt, have sore muscles, or injured. But inflammation requires a delicate balance. If the body’s inflammatory response does not switch off or gets too intense, it can harm otherwise healthy tissues. Then it becomes metaflammation (longterm inflammation), and a health problem. So if we reduce our body’s internal inflammation, we can better manage blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight loss and more. And the most effective method to reduce inflammation is through dietary improvements, particularly increasing our intake of natural anti-inflammatories. Foods such as salmon, turmeric, walnuts, good bacteria, and berries have excellent anti-inflammatory properties and are some of the most effective ways to reduce inflammation. But there are many more anti-inflammatory foods available, as well as pro-inflammatoryfoods we should be avoiding. Have you been eating them? At Darwin Dietitians we can help you explore these foods and their role in inflammation, so you can take the first steps to better health.

ALINTA MCGUIRE
WESTPAC INDIGENOUS BUSINESS MANAGER NT
Alinta Mcguire moved to the Northern Territory with her family when she was 16 years old. Eight years on, she is the Indigenous Business Manager at Westpac, a job that combines her “two passions in one”: financial education, and helping Indigenous Australians. “If you’re going to do something everyday for 30 to 40 years, I’d like it to contribute to something I really care about,” she says. “Financial education is a passion of mine and financial literacy needs to be shared, and sharing knowledge is important in Australia’s indigenous culture. Originally from NSW, Alinta is a Yuin woman and is always sure to identify herself in this way. She loves living in the Territory, especially as an Aboriginal person. “Being able to identify what your language is and even speak a few words is rare at home. Here, it’s vibrant and alive and that’s really inspiring,” she says. Alinta’s role at Westpac is to execute the bank’s reconciliation action plan on the ground in the NT. Westpac have made a number of wonderful commitments to the indigenous people of Australia, and her job is to make sure these promises are upheld. BUY ME NT
Fifteen months ago, twenty-five year old Allan Sommerville saw a fantastic opportunity to take over Territory business Buy Me NT. Since his takeover, the number of Buy Me NT customer email subscriptions has nearly doubled to 10 thousand, and he was named on the Australian Institute of Management’s 30 under 30 list. Young achiever is evidently an understatement. Buy Me NT aims to bring local consumers and local suppliers within the NT together, offering products and services for local businesses with substantial discounts. Allan’s business offers 1 to 3 deals per week, ranging from outback accommodation and houseboat deals, to deals for restaurants, cafes and in the health and fitness industry. In four years, Buy Me NT has supplied more than 500 deals to customers, and more than 20 thousand deal vouchers. That equates to an excess of nearly half a million dollars in savings for people in the NT. For a small city like Darwin, those numbers are extraordinary. Allan’s goal is to continue to deliver great products to customers, and to increase Buy Me NT’s capacity to connect local businesses and consumers. If these statistics are anything to go buy, Allan is bound to reach his goal – and go beyond it. D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 18
LISA DAVIES

Lisa Davies is a rarity amongst hairdressers in Darwin. Having worked at London Fashion Week and with years of experience working in one of Europe’s capital cities under her belt, Lisa is a world-class specialist in cutting and styling. After working as a hairdresser at Toni&Guy for 12 years in her hometown Bristol, Lisa decided she was ready for a change of scenery. She packed her bags, set off to travel Australia, and settled in Cairns. Three years on, she’s made a life for herself in Darwin as a hairdresser at Helmet Hair Studio. It’s clear the 30-year-old loves what she does, and where she does it. “Watching clients when they walk out happy is enough to fulfil your day,” she says. It’s a creative job that allows her to constantly develop new skills, and push herself to the edge. “After 14 years of hairdressing, I’m still learning new things,” she says. And Helmet Hair Studio provides the perfect, fun environment for Lisa’s professional and self-development.Lisa hopes to own her own salon one day, and to have “that lovely feeling of having people work for you that share your passion”. And she’d happily do so in Darwin. “You make friends so quickly and easily here,” she says. “I feel like I’ve got my own little family.”

DRINK UP! A S T H E P R O V E R B G O E S , P U R E W AT E R I S T H E WORLD’S FIRST AND FOREMOST MEDICINE.
As the weather cools down, it can become increasingly difficult to get enough water into you from day to day. Did you know that you need you need one litre for every 24 kg you weigh, therefore for an average 60 kg person 60/24 = 2.5 litres per day Although this seems like a mammoth task, I have a few handy tips to help you up your water intake. Aim a little higher than what you need. So for the above example I would advise aiming for two and half litres. You may not reach it but you’re more likely to get to it if you aim higher. Drink one full litre before you leave the house. Preferably, do this when you get up in the morning, as this will help kick-start your digestive system and metabolism. Plus it will make up for the eight or so hours during which you drank no water. Keep a bottle on your desk at work. It’s easy to keep drinking if the water is there in front of you. Take a bottle of water with you. While running around all day it can be easy to forget to drink, especially if you water is not with you. Pick a stainless steel or glass bottle so that you are no ingesting harmful plastic chemicals. Drink most of your water before 5pm. That’s kidney time (according to Chinese medicine). You want to have as much water in as you can, to enable your kidneys to do the best possible job. Squeeze a little lemon or lime into your water. This helps with alkalising your body as well as making it a little more interesting to drink. You could also use one of those fancy glass bottles that have an insert where you can place fresh fruit to infuse your water. Try citrus or more interesting combinations like strawberry and basil. Tea and coffee DO NOT count! Well, herbal teas DO count, but black tea and coffee don’t. In fact
black tea and coffee dehydrate you and you need one extra glass for each cup of tea or coffee you drink. Set a timer. That way if you get caught up doing a task, you will still remember to drink when the timer goes off. Love this? GIOVANNA WEBB IN A TIME WHEN PEOPLE IN GENERAL ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY CYNICAL ABOUT POLITICS, IT IS REALLY EXCITING TO SEE SOMEBODY AS ACCOMPLISHED AS GIOVANNA WEBB NOMINATE FOR POLITICAL OFFICE.
In an environment dominated by aspirants whose whole life revolves around political parties, it is rare to find a candidate who has excelled in academia as well as business and public life before deciding to give something back to the community herself, to make a difference. Colombian-born Giovanna Webb is a remarkable achiever. She was the 2013 Australian Rural Woman of the Year, and a NT Australian of the Year finalist in 2014. She’s a mother, businesswoman, migrant and zoologist. Now, she’s a politician too. As the Country Liberal’s representative for the Casuarina electorate, it’s fair to expect many more remarkable achievements from Giovanna in 2016. Giovanna and husband Dr Grahame Webb run one of Darwin’s most popular tourist attractions, Crocodylus Park, which is home to 10 thousand crocodiles. They breed crocodiles and harvest eggs from wetlands around Darwin. Giovanna’s crocodile skins, died gorgeous shades of pink, red, blue and every other colour, are sold to high-end European fashion houses including Louis Vuitton and Hermès. What’s more, “Gio”, as she is affectionately known, has developed a pilot program to encourage Indigenous women artists to incorporate crocodile by-products in innovative new art works. Giovanna spent the first 30 years of her life in her native country of Colombia, where she had a distinguished academic career whilst pursuing her lifelong D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 30
E: giovanna.webb@couyntryliberals.org.au • Ph: +61 449 22 45 01 passion for animal welfare and conservation. She was at the forefront of the now universally recognised concept of the sustainable use of threatened species which by placing a commercial value on the animal ensures their conservation. “We need to be bold and strategic in the way we lead Darwin forward, and the Country Liberals Government fully embraces this,” she says. “Recognising and talking about Darwin’s proximity to Asia is one thing - but actively exploiting it, to fuel our economy and tourism industries, is what we need.” Giovanna stresses the need to increase air capacity during the dry season, when visitors want to visit. As prices skyrocket, tourists cannot afford to come, and residents cannot
afford to leave. Airline seats to fly ‘down south’ in emergencies, in the peak tourist season, do not exist or are way too expensive. ”I’m passionate about community life,” she says. “I am involved in community and family issues continually, and believe they are the very foundation of a strong and secure society.” “I have been working with the Government on a whole raft of issues relevant to the Casuarina electorate,” she says. Crime, anti-social behaviour, traffic, the hospital – which needs to be more welcoming to everyone – and its problematic car park, are being discussed with Government. To help with this she has opened an office in the Casuarina Village (Shop 5) and is ready to be the electorate’s voice to Government. D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 31
Though Giovanna wears many hats – businesswoman, scientist, and community leader – she is first and foremost, a loving mother. With husband Grahame, her 16-year-old son, Freddy, is the most important part of her life. Giovanna says her decision to go into politics was “a family decision”, with Freddy and Grahame her strongest supporters. In short Giovanna does not need the job – she wants it, because having achieved so much in her personal life, she is ready to make a difference for both the Casuarina Electorate and the wider community.

When Tony Burns came on as CEO of HPA in 2014, he had a vision to take the enterprise to a new level of empowerment, independence and inspiration for Territorians with disabilities and special needs. In one and a half years, this powerful vision has been successfully achieved, and continues to strengthen through support of the community. As a Territory business that employs Territorians, for the benefit of all of the Territory, HPA truly is unique. HPA – Helping People Achieve – is the only not-for-profit Australian Disability Enterprise in the Northern Territory. Their passion goes beyond employing people with disabilities. It’s about servicing the community, relieving Government pressures, and creating new and exciting opportunities that mightn’t otherwise exist. Everyone deserves the right to feel the value of self-worth that having a job and contributing to the community brings.
“I AM VERY HUMBLED TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD SUCH AN AMAZING TEAM OF OVER ONE HUNDRED EMPLOYEES,” SAYS CEO TONY BURNS. “THE HPA TEAM ARE THE ONLY MOTIVATION I REQUIRE TO CONTINUE OUR JOURNEY AND REMAIN FOCUSSED ON OUR COMMITMENT TO BE AN INNOVATIVE EMPLOYER.”
Across its three arms of business: Kokoda Industries, Ausdesigns and Darwin Accommodation Services (DAS), HPA provides wonderful opportunities for work, supervision and support. It is a rewarding place to work, and there is a strong sense of family within the HPA team. For HPA employees, it’s so much more than a job. Through the construction of furniture, creation of beautiful fabric products, shredding of confidential documents and the distribution of trailers, HPA invites the community to get involved. Whether by visiting the Kokoda workshop, purchasing some of HPA’s unique products or utilising its services, anyone can be a part of bettering our wonderful community we live in, and supporting local too. No job is too big or too small at HPA, but all jobs are certainly made easier when our community rallies together and shares an influential vision.

ITS HERB AND VEGGIE GROWING TIME The beauty of growing your favourite herbs, you can grow them close to the kitchen in a pot... They like to grow in the full sun, fertilized regularly and a little drink every day.
PREPARATION FOR PLANTING YOUR EDIBLE GARDEN... RAISED GARDEN BEDS: This can be in the form of tanks, concrete/paved edging, timber logs or even bales of hay. Layer with topsoil and mix of cow manure 3cm, mushroom compost 3cm, mixed through... Layer mulch hay on top to keep moist and retain water... When planting sprinkle with general slow release osmocote. Light water every day and position in the full sun semi shade.
GOOD COMPANION PLANTING Companion planting is one of the oldest gardening techniques practised and has been in use long before the introduction of the chemical control of unwanted pests. Many early gardeners did not have the luxury of purchasing ready-made pest controls and had to rely heavily on what Mother Nature provided. The success of these techniques means that many of today’s gardeners are turning back to these methods. With care and attention, companion planting will most certainly reward you with a bountiful harvest of flowers and produce, as well as a bug and disease free garden!
