Hailing from the UK, now a proud citizen of the Territory for 22 years, Carolyn is a molecular biophysicist and genetic engineer. She has served as a cadet pilot with the Royal Air Force, worked as an inspector of schools, has a Masters of Education and Business, and is a fellow of the Institute of Biology. She owns Lake Bennett Resort and The Rock Centre in Doctors Gully, as well as Health Education Learning Programs (HELP) Australia, and HELP NT. She is a mother of two gorgeous girls – Katie and Gemma – and turns 50 in April. On top of all that, she’s campaigning to win a seat in Parliament. Carolyn’s three greatest passions are the environment, helping to educate children – particularly those who are disadvantaged, and supporting the advancement of indigenous Australians. Further, she’s big on promoting business enterprise within Australia, and encouraging people to “give it a go”. In a nutshell, Carolyn is incredibly passionate about people. She has a number of visions for the Territory, and sees her role as the Candidate for Goyder as a way to make important decisions that will benefit all individuals. Carolyn supports the sustainable and well-considered development of bush and rural areas. One of her primary visions is to support rural lifestyle, and to give Territorians greater access to our superb NT parks and reserves for recreational use.

Another passion of Carolyn’s is to help repair some of the “hurts and harms of Aboriginal people, that prevent them from living life to their fullest potential”. “I want to eradicate disharmony,” she says, and will do so by “supporting my indigenous colleagues in Government and helping to establish more indigenous businesses”. Her 15-year involvement with the Bagot Community Church is evidence of Carolyn’s support of disadvantaged people, as is her involvement with Foodbank since its conception six years ago. Evidently, Carolyn has been working for the community for a long, long while – the only difference now is, she’s doing so in the public eye.

The school has been recognized nationally and internationally for its outstanding educational outcomes, and its innovative programs The Essington School Darwin will be the first school in Australia to fully embrace the STEM philosophy, and to use this program to extend its Science and Mathematics curriculum. Principal David Cannon said: “The UK Government has long identified STEM education as a major priority at both school and university levels and sees STEM subjects as integral to the UK’s success. In 2014 we sent three teachers to the national UK STEM Centre at the University of York to research their programs and bring back ideas and programs. In 2015 we will now begin to include STEM programs across the curriculum and year levels”. STEM Programs have spread to the United States and other leading western countries in recent years. It is increasingly being seen as an educational program designed to prepare primary and secondary students for university study in the four STEM areas. Siobhan Nox, Assistant Principal Curriculum, who visited the UK STEM Centre said: “Our School’s Working Party is involved in planning STEM programs at both the primary and secondary levels. The exciting bit, however, is working on designs for STEM Centre buildings for the Junior School and Middle School”.

For further information about the School and its programs, please phone the School on Phone: 8985 0100. Enrolments are limited and early enrolment is encouraged.

Nestled on the water’s edge, Crab Claw Island Resort is a relaxing escape from the everyday. The complex has elevated cabins connected by walkways through the trees and palm gardens, refreshing swimming pools, an elevated open restaurant with views across the harbour, boat ramp, wildlife and natural beauty galore. Crab Claw Island’s ‘Breezes’ restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a wide selection of tasty, al a carte meals. the pool. We stayed here for 6 nights, but could have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly, nothing is a bother. Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway… the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories, the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday fare, high-chairs and knives and forks just the right size for little hands. We have two accommodation options to suit families who need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear of the main walkway, approximately 15m from the beach. They are twice the size

of our standard cabins and fitted with a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively ‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage. It has two bedrooms, each with a double and two single beds; a large balcony with a gate, dining table and chairs and BBQ.

Sanderson Middle School provides students with the opportunity to be part of their Leading Learner Program. The Program supports, extends and challenges academically gifted students to develop the practices and skills for successful life choices and careers. After attending Japanese and Science Enrichments Classes at Sanderson Middle School as a Year 6 student last year, Alyssa Perkins decided Sanderson Middle School was the school for her. “The Enrichment Classes were fun and challenging with friendly teachers and students. These classes helped me to decide I could get a good education at Sanderson”. Alyssa is now leading the way as part of the school’s Leading Learner Program and as a member of the school’s Student Representative Council.

A LY S S A P E R K I N S

As an Indigenous student proud of her culture, Alyssa is also supported by the Stars Foundation, an engagement program for Indigenous girls. Similarly, the Sanderson Middle School Clontarf Academy provides support for Indigenous boys. Sanderson Middle School offers two language choices in Japanese language and Indigenous dialects. Alyssa said “I am very excited about the opportunity to learn a different Indigenous language to the one my family speaks at home”. In addition to the Leading Learning Program Sanderson Middle School offers an extensive music program with two bands, a rock band and a choir for students to be a part of; and also has the NT School of Music on campus. Sanderson Middle School thrives for Excellence in Learning.

It’s the Australia real estate industries night of nights, the ‘Oscars’ of the real estate industry, where winners receive the highest honour in Australian real estate. The 11th annual Real Estate Institute of Australia’s (REIA) National Awards for Excellence recently took place in Melbourne, where a Territorian scooped a win for the first time in the awards history. Sales Executive from Palmerston’s Call2View Real Estate, Dianne Brereton, took out the Achievement Award; one of the sixteen categories recognising hard work, community service and consumer focus. “I’m the first person to bring an award back to the Northern Territory from the REIA National Awards for Excellence,” Ms Brereton said. “I was nominated for the award after winning the Achievement Award at the 2015 Real Estate Institute of Northern Territory (REINT) Awards for Professional Excellence. “To be recognised at this level forms contributions to the real estate profession three years into starting in the industry is an honour, and I’m very proud to represent the real estate industry of the Northern Territory.

“It’s all about building that relationship with your clients, striving to go above and beyond for them and exceeding their expectations – that’s what gives me a point of difference.” Ms Brereton said the real estate industry is such a rewarding industry to work in. “I love being able to help people on both sides - that is helping people that are selling and buying,” Ms Brereton said. "I believe that if real estate agents did that little bit extra to step outside their comfort zones, the industry’s image could be lifted significantly. “At Call2View Real Estate we are all about pushing the limits and striving to be at the forefront of the real estate market in the Northern Territory.” CEO of the Real Estate Institute of Northern Territory, Quentin Kilian, said this is a very prestigious award and to be the first recipient to bring an award as such back to Darwin is a commendable effort. Due to the inherent complexity of dealing with multiple parties, often without a clear understanding of their obligations and restrictions, ones progression through the compensable system can be stressful and lead to undue anxiety. Often the disempowerment associated with the “do this”, “go over there”, “see this person” approach can create a perception of total loss of control over ones destiny, impacting on pain levels, behavior and motivation. recognizing potential return to work barriers, navigating through their respective legislative requirements, and identifying clear management strategies. Bridging the gap between employee and employer expectations following a workplace injury can often be the first, most important step. The benefits of early workplace re-engagement have been clearly demonstrated, with many quality research studies indicating that the longer an injured worker is away from their usual workplace the less likely they are to return to work at all, irrespective of the severity of their condition or diagnosis. Having a well-trained, experienced health professional help you through the process in its early stages can mean the difference between a positive or a poor long-term outcome.

THE ESSENTIAL FIRST STEP FOR

SAFE EXC AVATION DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG IS THE NATIONAL REFERRAL SERVICE FOR INFORMATION ON UNDERGROUND INFRASTRUCTURE. IT PUTS THOSE WHO INTEND TO EXCAVATE IN TOUCH WITH UNDERGROUND ASSET OWNERS WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THE DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG SERVICE. IF YOU ARE PLANNING ANY KIND OF HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECT THAT INVOLVES DIGGING, YOU SHOULD CONTACT DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG BEFORE YOU COMMENCE. How does the service work? Free Dial Before You Dig enquiries can be lodged online at www.1100.com.au (mobile device compatible), by downloading our iPhone app or by ringing our national call centre on 1100 during business hours. After lodging your enquiry, Dial Before You Dig send you a confirmation sheet which provides details of the asset owners affected and enables you to ensure the recorded dig site is correct. The asset owners will then send you information (generally plans) detailing the location of their underground infrastructure within the vicinity of your dig site. Why should I use the service before I begin digging? We all need to do our best to ensure we do not damage Australia’s underground

infrastructure. Underground pipes and cables carry vital services such as water, electricity, communications and gas. Damaging these can potentially cause widespread service disruption, personal injury and the risk of incurring significant financial penalties. Dial Before You Dig is a quick and free service so it makes sense to lodge an enquiry each time you are planning any kind of work that involves digging. What type of information is provided? Underground location plans are sent by asset owners and they provide information on the presence of underground assets. However, they do not always pinpoint the exact location of the cables and pipes. Utilities provide contact details and other information to assist with working safely around their

Take the guess work out of digging. Locate underground pipes and cables first. Lodge your free Dial Before You Dig enquiry - BEFORE you commence work on your property. It’s the essential first step of safe excavation.

infrastructure. On site locators can also be organised if necessary. What else do I need to do to prevent damage? Once you have lodged your enquiry with Dial Before You Dig and have received the plans, you should also ensure that you work safely once on site. This should include looking for clues that underground infrastructure is present, such as marker posts, water meters, pits, inspection points and warning signs. Dial Before You Dig is the essential first step. Lodge your enquiry, receive the plans, but also follow safe work procedures on site. For more information on excavating safely please visit www.1100.com.au.

CLEAR RECEPTION TECHNO LO GY IS M EAN T TO MAKE OUR L I VES EA S I ER, BUT W HEN I T ISN’ T W O RKING PR OPERLY, I T ONLY MAKES L I F E HA RDER. The team at Clear Reception are here to help. They specialise in solving all sorts of technical problems at the home or office. Rod Teece is a self-starter with a bundle of enthusiasm and plenty of drive. He started up Clear Reception whilst working other jobs, but now commits 100% of his time to the business, which involves managing a small team. They offer a range of services; from running data and security cables, setting up and fixing TV reception problems, helping people increase their mobile phone coverage and setting up CCTV; all to help make life easier for their valued clients. Clear Reception can solve a combination of technical issues in one hit, much like they did at Hayes Creek. “We put up a nine metre

pole, which provided them with internet and mobile coverage. “We did the network data cabling, setup mobile internet for the computers, connected them all together and also installed CCTV as a complete solution, allowing their office to function more efficiently than it was before,” Rod says. Rod and his team also set up a complete wireless CCTV security system for the Howard Springs Caravan Park. “They needed CCTV around the caravan park, and it had to be wireless, so we put in multiple wireless devices to run these cameras to link back to their office and now they can view their cameras from wherever they are.”Clear Reception can resolve TV reception issues, provide additional outlets for TV or phones, set up and solve internet connectivity issues

at the home or office including all wireless networking functions. Another service they offer involves the National Broadband Network (NBN). “A lot of houses had the NBN installed in an undesirable location. We can run a new data cable from the internal NBN box out to somewhere that the customer can place their new modem. We also help setup media players so customers can use the NBN to watch movies and make the most of the NBN.” It doesn’t matter how big or how small the job, Rod and his team are committed to solving your pesky technical problems - fast. “I want to leave the job knowing I’ve helped my client out. That’s definitely the most rewarding part of this job – solving people’s problems.”
