It was this understanding that led Tim McDonald to establish NT Phone Repairs in 2011 with his co-founder Nat Brice. Rebranded as SmartLab NT, the business is the first and last stop for all mobile phone hardware and software faults. Now with two locations in Darwin and plans to expand further afield in the Territory, Tim is relishing the demands that come with small business. “I’ve always had an interest in entrepreneurship. Being a growth industry, and being a start up company, mobile device repair has provided the challenges and rewards associated with being a small business owner,” he says. Originally from Adelaide, Tim has degrees in both music and marketing and business. It is this combination of creativity and business acumen that enables the musician to be constantly thinking forward. According to Tim, the biggest challenge facing business owners is to anticipate shifts in customer demand with enough time to research, develop and

DARWINLIFE MAGAZINE 7

implement new products, services, systems or procedures that will be ready to serve to the market at the exact time the shift in consumer behaviour is fully realized amongst the population. “If a thousand people are asking you for something that you can’t offer yet, it’s already too late, as by the time you implement the changes required to meet this shift in demand, there is a high chance they have moved onto other things,” he says. Inspired professionally by neuroscientist and author Sam Harris, and personally by his partner Hollie, Tim attributes his success to a combination of drive, adaptability, and surrounding himself with great people. When it comes to success however, the dictionary definition of the word does not motivate Tim. Rather it’s his personal interpretation of what success looks like. “For me, it’s the happiness that comes from the freedom to choose to do whatever I want to do at any given moment,” he says.

Karl Secondis

Rhiannon Oakhill

For the team at One Real Estate, this ethos is woven into the cultural fabric of the business. Led by Karl Secondis, One Real Estate is a boutique agency with focus on delivering exemplary service and unsurpassed industry knowledge. “It’s a formula. You need an agent that’s got experience, a product that presents well, and a marketing plan that ties in with the property and market conditions, and then pull all that together to extract a buyer out of the market,” says Karl. With a reputation for selling unique, high-end properties, Karl has achieved very successful results in the million plus market. With over twenty years experience in the Darwin Real Estate market, he is also a licensed auctioneer, and is a frequent competitor in the Australasian Auctioneer of the Year Award. He is also a four-time recipient of the REINT Auctioneer of the Year Award. Renowned for his acute attention to detail, Karl is passionate about selling real estate. “We love what we do. We are proactive agents. We love good marketing and give great guidance to our clients,” he says. Joining Karl in the sales arena is Rhiannon Oakhill. With a thirst for variety, new challenges and more engagement with people, Rhiannon made the move from property management administration to the sales space in mid 2014. Her background in the music and

Amanda Porter onerealestate.com.au

arts sphere enables her to bring a fresh creative perspective to the marketing arm of the business. “It’s been amazing, and I’ve really found my place in meeting new vendors and buyers, showing properties and the excitement of negotiating sales,” she says. Heading up the property management division is Amanda Porter. Growing up working in her grandfather’s real estate empire in New South Wales, Amanda developed a thirst for property management, and now she and her team of eight oversee a portfolio of over 300 properties. Passionate about developing her team, Amanda’s focus has been on streamlining processes so the division runs smoothly. “Our efficient back end means property managers are freed up to focus on their properties and deliver on the level of service our owners expect,” she says. Offering a unique point of difference, One Real Estate charges clients one fully inclusive fee to manage their rental properties. According to Karl, this simplistic business model ensures property owners are always aware of their fees, and don’t get hit with any hidden extra costs. With their ongoing commitment to personalized service, and dedication to making their clients’ experience as stress free and memorable as possible, the team at One Real Estate plan to continue leading the way in property sales and management.

FOREVER EVOLVING AND INNOVATING IS PAR AM OUN T TO S UCC E S S. “It’s that old adage ‘If you’re doing in five years time what you were doing five years ago you’re probably out of business’,” he says. As a Chartered Accountant, Clint spent many years working nationally and internationally in the field of Insolvency, Forensic Accounting, and Audit, during which time he saw many factors that contribute to business decline. This spurred the entrepreneur to turn his focus to helping small and medium businesses survive and thrive, and he established Ambrose Business Solutions with the aim of helping find practical solutions to complex problems. “It’s about really trying to look at what the problem is and unpack it and build a solution. It’s very much an engineering approach,” says Clint. Acknowledging that the technical and academic jargon used by accountants can get lost on clients, especially those from culturally diverse backgrounds, Clint has specialized, and utilizes digital methods including animation to develop a series of learning platforms that simplify the way he advises businesses with story telling and imagery. “I spent a lot of time in the business psych area studying personality indicators such as Myers Briggs and Neuro Linguistic Programming

(NLP), and I really focused on developing accelerated learning tools,” he says. Clint feels that his early years growing up in Arnhem Land fuelled his passion to bring micro enterprise to Aboriginal communities, and he is motivated by his desire to help people achieve. His Commbank sponsored Walkabout™ program and related Pop Up Village™ concepts have gained national and international recognition. The latest innovation out of the Ambrose stable is DriveAbout ™, a learning licence app prototype. Working on projects with the Northern Territory government, Clint developed a prototype app to replace the current paper based test, delivering competency based content through animations with assessment that could be in any language from Yolgnu Matha to Spanish. “It’s a real breakthrough. Using animation and mobile platforms to explain fundamental concepts simply has meant that our work is applicable to ‘all people’ in Australia and internationally,” says Clint. With the Queensland Government now expressing interest in the technology, Clint feels the market is now validating Ambose’s disruptive innovative methods, approach and overall vision. “It about keeping the eye on the prize while still taking it game by game,” he says.

19 2016 ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF DARWIN

Mark the anniversary of the day World War II came to Australia, and honour those who lost their lives and those who fought to defend the border. The Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin is commemorated each year on 19 February at the Cenotaph, Bicentennial Park, Darwin to tribute, honour and remember those who defend Darwin and attracts many veterans' who served in Darwin around that time. On 19 February 1942, World War II was brought to the shores of Australia when the Japanese dropped bombs over Darwin. On this day over 243 people, both armed forces personnel and civilians, lost their lives. Eight ships were sunk and 11 damaged. A section of the wharf was destroyed, killing 22 waterside workers. Over the next 21 months, Darwin, Adelaide River, Katherine and Milingimbi in Arnhem Land were bombed 64 times. The service begins at 9.30am with the sounding of the WWII air raid siren at 9.58am the same time it sounded years ago as waves of Japanese bombers flew over the city.

FEB 14:

EAT YOUR HEART OUT. As someone who has a major relationship with food, I see Valentines Day as yet another day to indulge my appetite. But still, not at the expense of feeling like a bloated python for the following week. You may scoff, but healthy can still be sexy. Firstly, (if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times) avoid wheat. That right sweet lips, no bread, pasta, cake or biscuits. A bloated belly, tummy ache and fuzzy head does not a sexy vixen make. So steer clear and instead choose low carb delicious whole foods that will actually help get you in the mood for love.

My most favourite loved up foods include: • Oysters - especially good at giving you that loving feeling thanks to their high amounts of zinc. • Strawberries – packed with vitamin C that helps stimulate libido in women. Strawberries also help relax blood vessels and promote blood flow. • Dark chocolate - contains phenylethylamine (PEA) and serotonin. The same chemical produced in our brains when we fall in love. • Asparagus – promotes the production of histamine a chemical that helps both men and women reach those highest of highs. • Figs – full of trace elements like vitamin

E and magnesium that are essential for sexual health. • Watermelon – high in a compound that helps our bodies produce Nitric Oxide, a chemical that dilates our blood vessels. Very similar in action to that little blue pill starting with a V. • Chilies – helps raise the heart rate and release endorphins, giving us a happy natural high. • Red Wine – again with the nitric oxide production, but you can’t really get enough of this good thing when it comes to love. • Salmon – high in omega 3 that helps raise dopamine levels and trigger arousal. Personally, I’m planning my Valentines Day menu to look a little something like this, but shhh!!! Don’t tell Mr CH, it’s a surprise. A Very Cosmo Valentines Menu ENTRÉE Raw oysters with a chili, lime and fresh coriander dressing. MA IN Crispy skinned salmon with cauliflower puree and grilled asparagus. D ES S ER T Fruit Platter with dark chocolate dip – watermelon, strawberries, figs and assorted nuts. D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 16

Here’s how to decipher which of these colours will actually work for you and how to use them in an everyday outfit. If your skin is naturally cool toned (that is has pink, red or bluish undertones) you will look best in the cool colours such as serenity, limpet shell, snorkel blue and lilac grey. If your skin is naturally warm (with yellow, peachy, or golden undertones) you will be more suited to the warm colours peach echo, fiesta, iced coffee. Use this only as a rough guide though and don’t be scared to mix it up a bit if you like colours that are outside of this. • Softer pastel tones are best for day wear- suitable for the office or for a lunch date. • Bright and bold colours can be worn both day and night. Try using 2 or more of these colours together, for e.g. Rose quartz with lilac grey or serenity with iced coffee. While working with the Arts Council to tour performance groups around the Territory, Alan James met a young Mr Yunupingu, who subsequently became the lead singer of the band Yothu Yindi. “That started a 25 year journey that ended up with us working in 32 countries around the world,” says Alan. Yothu Yindi were top ten worldwide in 1991 with their song Treaty, co-written with Paul Kelly and named in one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. Managing the band until Mr Yunupingu passed away in 2013, Alan received an Order of Australia Medal in 2005 for his services to the Arts. During his time with the Yothu Yindi, Alan and the band members were committed to breaking down racism in Australia. He headed up the Yothu Yindi foundation for twenty years, and established the Garma Festival. While no longer actively engaged in that sphere, it is still very much a part of Alan’s life. “I have a reasonably well developed sense of philanthropy, and social justice issues, equity and equality are of importance to me,” he says. Inspired professionally by Mr Yunupingu, describing him as a man of vision, Alan is also influenced by the wisdom of Nelson Mandela. “I spent quite a bit of time in the NGO sector developing an understanding and ethos of giving and how important that is,” he says. Now the General Manager of the Darwin Entertainment Centre, Alan is tasked with mapping the future of the thirty-year-old venue, programming world class acts for Darwin audiences. “I’m really on a mission now at the thirty year anniversary to turn the place around and hopefully get it into the shape where it can go for another thirty years. I think it’s a really special facility that we’ve got and it’s very rewarding that Darwin audiences are responding to our program,” he says. Alan feels that he has been fortunate to work in his chosen field for the duration of his career, and attributes his success to a combination of luck, hard work and tenacity. “When you feel strongly about something, have the confidence to not let that go. Let it be the driving force,” he says.

The Essington School Darwin launched its focus on STEM three years ago, the first school in Australia to adopt a school-wide Year 1 to 12 focus on STEM. This year the School has appointed the first Director of STEM Programs to drive it programs across the primary, middle school and senior college years. Rob Slider, previously Science curriculum leader at a leading international school in Singapore, has taken up the first Director of STEM Programs position in an Australian school. Rob is originally from the United States and has taught and lead Science programs in international schools in Asia in the International Baccalaureate and the international Cambridge University program, the IGCSE. Rob has been working with international education and Science consultant, Dr. Gregory Clarke, on STEM Programs for Essington School for this year. Some of

these plans include a Middle School STEM Centre, STEM Study Tours to Singapore and Tokyo, and the acquisition of new technologies to use in teaching programs. Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Siobhan Nox, is from the UK and familiar with the STEM program. She said: “These STEM subjects are increasingly needed in the workplace; in fact the day is coming when the lack of them will make life at work a real struggle”. Principal David Cannon said: “Our visiting teachers to the UK STEM Centre in 2014 came back with a passion for this area of education and have been busy integrating STEM curriculum across the Junior and Middle Schools. The appointment of our first Director of STEM Programs will drive these programs across the school this year ”. The enthusiasm for STEM experiences has been catching. Two Essington Senior College student have attended national Science and Engineering programs during the January holidays. Kristin Smith was selected to participate in the National Youth Science Forum at the Australian National

University in Canberra. Coco O’Halloran has just returned from a residential Science Engineering Vacation at Sydney University, the only NT student selected for this program. The enthusiasm for Science is shared with their Essington Senior College teacher, Sharra Martin, who was one of three Australian Science teachers selected to attend a study program in Japan in late 2015. Sharra visited a Japanese Super Science School, and toured Sony, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the Miraikan Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. FOR NE V IL L E PA NTA Z IS,

STRONG FAMILY VALUES UND ERPIN THE CO RE OF HIS S UCC E S S. “My family is the pillar that allows me to do what I do. That’s a key part of the success of this business,” says Neville. As Store Manager of Parap Fine Foods, Neville’s vision and market knowledge have enabled him to grow and develop the family business established by his parents Paul and Rene in 1968. Crediting his parents for providing his “street training” in the retail world, Neville believes the lessons they taught have enabled him to overcome many of the obstacles facing businesses today. “History has a sense of repeating itself, and all that’s changed is the language that we use,” he says. Although he worked in the family business growing up, Neville left to pursue a career in the arts world. After obtaining a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Tasmania, he returned to Darwin as an Art Lecturer, before ultimately joining his sister Paula at the helm of the store. According to Neville, the move from the art world back into food and retail was an easy transition. Influenced by the great food halls

of David Jones, Harrods in London, and Dean and DeLuca’s in New York, Neville used his creativity and artistic flair to propel the visual impact of the business. “With the big food halls overseas it’s almost like walking into a gallery. So I treat food the same way as art, constantly doing window displays, utilizing the European way of selling food from your front window,” he says. Inspired by travel, Neville believes that journeys overseas provide the best education. These trips also ignite Neville’s passion to ensure that Darwin does not miss out on what is offered to southern counterparts. “There is no reason why we can’t be as good as someone in Sydney or Melbourne. We can compete with the southern markets. Even though we have the tyranny of distance we’ve still got the client base that can equal the gourmet stores around Australia,” he says. Neville cites positive cash flow as a key indicator of success, and feels assured as to the longevity of Parap Fine Foods, as the third generation of the Pantazis family now comes through the ranks.

HOME TRENDS 2016

METALLIC: This year metallic will continue to dominate for home accessories and lighting. Think rose gold, copper and bronze as well as traditional gold and silvers. ACID WASH: Acid wash everything. From vases and bowls, to rugs, bedding and fashion acid wash is back in a big way. INDOOR GREENERY: With more and more of us choosing smaller urban living over the somewhat outdated ‘big house in the suburbs’ there is an emphasis on being connected to nature so we will see more indoor plant life including veggie gardens, flowers and simple potted greenery. TIMBER: This year will see more timber bench tops, vanity units and timber feature walls. I predict there will be a slow move away from the coldness of stone or marble benches, which have dominated for the past few years. MOODY COLOURS: Home colours will move towards a tranquil cosy feel again and away from the starkness of all white and grey. SMART HOMES: Technology is advancing into every aspect of our home from smart light switches, Power and data being recessed into bench tops or furniture pieces and there will be a rise in smart home security and surveillance items available to the general market.

GIMBELLS LANDSCAPING B Y M I C H E L L E S TA C P O O L E

Whether they be community leaders, business people, sports people or just the next door neighbour, the unassuming businessman celebrates the humble champions from all walks of life. Director of Gimbells Landscaping, David runs the company alongside his brother Phillip and business partner Jodie Rousell. Established by their father Rusty in 1962 as a landscaping business, Gimbells is now a premier Territory landscape and construction contractor. Originally from Sydney, David is a carpenter by trade, and spent his early days in Darwin alongside Phillip rebuilding the city after Cyclone Tracy. When landscaping became more prevalent in project works from the late 1980’s on, they made the natural progression across from construction, and helped to shape Gimbells into the success story that it is today. With it’s company mission – “To know the need, to meet the need, to provide a sustainable solution” – Gimbells Landscaping is committed to enhancing the aesthetic view of the Territory with innovative design, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation. Motivated by his desire to achieve, and positive feedback from clients, David

feels that success is fluid and something to be continually striving toward with perseverance and commitment. “I’m not sure I’m there yet. Having a business that performs well with only half my current input would be a good measure to start with. Motivated, capable staff with plenty of profitable work ahead of them is the goal,” he says. For potential young landscapers coming through the ranks, David feels that being proactive and providing solutions rather than being part of the problem is paramount. “This encapsulates what all employers are constantly seeking – someone who is interested in the outcome of the job, not when the next lunch break is,” he says. According to David, job satisfaction comes from a number of factors, from sharing successes with clients and staff, to the nature of the work itself. “The stand out is winning that desirable prize tender, but that’s soon followed by the challenge to perform, so it’s always yin and yang,” he says. As David looks to the years ahead, he hopes to continue building on the legacy Rusty, turning 98 this year, has created. “He still inspires most who meet him,” he says.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT TO BE S UCC E S S F UL.

According to Karl Secondis, if you want to get face to face with success, it’s worth taking the time to broaden your horizons. “You can be successful very quickly in this industry as there is so much information and training available. I would always encourage anybody to invest in themselves and travel further afield to get close to successful people who have been doing this for quite some time,” he says. The founder of One Real Estate cites industry leader John McGrath as his inspiration, along with Sir Richard Branson. Aspiring to emulate the culture that the famous entrepreneur has created, Karl believes it’s important to take the time to get to know his team on a personal level. “I think the saying ‘people don’t care how

much you know until they know how much you care’ has always been quite clear in my mind,” he says. Motivating his team by acknowledging achievements and providing incentives together with an appealing work environment, Karl keeps himself focused with a positive attitude and enjoys what he does. “It’s about having the desire to be the best I can be. If you’re not enjoying doing what you’re doing, then pack your bags and go and do something else,” he says. It was this philosophy that saw Karl transition from his initial career as a hairdresser to one of Darwin’s most successful real estate agents. Wanting to work in an environment where he

was rewarded in direct proportion to his success, Karl seized the opportunity, and his dedication and tenacity quickly paid off. “In my younger years it was all about the financial upside, but as I’ve grown one of the things that is really important to me is achieving that balance between work and my personal life,” he says. Routine by nature, the real estate mogul is meticulous about leading a healthy lifestyle. Rising at 4.30am most days enables Karl to exercise each morning before the demands of family life intervene. “I just do the best I can do. I generally don’t leave much behind and I give it my all,” he says.

Some people think it’s a waste of time fertilising in the wet season. That can be true if you use an ordinary fertiliser. In the case of ordinary fertilisers 90% of Nitrogen is lost after just 25mm of rainfall. Organics are not much better, they have very low nutrient levels to begin with and the nutrients are still subject to leaching. Contrary to claims on many organic fertiliser labels, they are not slow release. They just work slowly, as they have low levels of nutrients. So what’s the answer? The answer is Troforte and it’s a brand new approach to plant nutrition. Troforte is the work of micro biologists from WA universities. It’s based on natural minerals and contains 26-30 species of beneficial microbes. The microbes grab the minerals, break them down and attach them directly to plant roots. The plants give the microbes sugars

and the microbes give the plants nutrients in return. So then what happens? It’s just amazing what happens. The first thing is that the microbes want the plant to do well, so they will make the roots up to 100 times better…. So your plants become more drought tolerant!!! Flowering and fruiting are most dramatically improved. Troforte can be used on all your plants- pot plants, veges, herbs, flowers, shrubs, trees, even natives. The nutrients will not be leached out in heavy rains and a single application will feed your garden for up to 5 months. We recommend re feeding every 4 months to keep things going. All fertilisers need good soil moisture levels to work. So the wet season is a great time to fertilise… as long as it’s slow release and if it’s Troforte, it’s not going to kill earthworms or acidify your soil either.

Feed your gardens with Troforte microbial based fertiliser now and enjoy the benefits this dry season!

PLANTS GIVE BACK... D I D Y O U K N O W T H AT P L A N T S A R E U N I V E R S A L S Y M B O L S F O R L O V E , F R I E N D S H I P, A P P R E C I AT I O N , HONOUR AND HOPE. They improve indoor air quality by helping remove chemicals including carbon monoxide. The mere presents of house/office plants can reduce eye irritation, fatigue, headaches and dry skin. Workers in plant friendly environments miss fewer days and experience less job stress. Plants can increase memory retention up to 20%. Computer reaction times are 12% quicker when plants are placed near your work station. Some of the many plants I would recommend are:

DIEFFENBACHIA They are a popular houseplant because of their tolerance of shade. Dieffenbachia are an attractive plant with large leaves green and or variegated..It is fairly easy to keep and grow. I always suggest you have half of your indoor plants out in the shade on your veranda and the other half inside. Then around every 6-8 weeks swop them over So they all get some lovely fresh air. This way they keep healthy at the same time...

C A L AT H E A They like light shade or dappled light indoors. Do not expose to direct sunlight as it will fade the leaf colours. It prefers warm and humid conditions and needs to be fertilized regularly. Calathea also thrive in bottle gardens and terrariums due to their high humidity. Needs regular maintenance.

DRACENA As you can see below they can be used as an amazing advanced indoor plant. They come in many colours and are very hardy and easy to maintain. They love to bush up with a regular cut back and fertilize. Regular watering and they can be trained to create an architectural sculptured look.

LU C K Y B AM B O O Great indoor plant for beginners. You can buy them in a single stem and grow in a lovely vase of water. Or pot them up in soil as you see here in the pretty decorative pot. Tough little plant. Even though named a Lucky bamboo, it’s not from the bamboo family,it is actually a dracaena.

P H I LO D E N D R O N S Philodendrons are among the most popular, tolerant, and durable of all house plants. There are many different species of Philodendrons ,each possessing its own characteristics as to leaf size, shape or colouring. Some species climb while others remain in more of a shrub shape. What philodendrons all have in common is their ability to survive neglect and adverse conditions. They will tolerate low light ,keep the soil evenly moist, but allow it to dry out between watering.. Over watering will cause the leaves to turn yellow...Under watering will cause the leaves to turn brown and fall off. It is a good idea to wash the leaves on your indoor plants regularly to prevent the pores from becoming plugged with dust.. Good luck with your indoor plants. Until next time, happy decorating.....

DEPARTMENT OF

INFRASTRUCTURE

YOUNG ENGINEERS THRIVING JOSEFA TCHONG AND CIELO A LVA RA N

The opportunity to work in a dynamic environment on challenging but rewarding projects attracted young engineers Josefa Tchong and Cielo Alvaran to the Northern Territory Department of Infrastructure to begin what they envisage will be long careers in the construction industry. Both young women acknowledge that engineering is not yet as popular a career path for women as it is for men, but strongly believe a career in construction is something more women should consider. Josefa and Cielo have thrived in their work on civil projects in the Department, where they have both been part of the graduate program. During this program, they have rotated through different sections, enjoying the opportunity to work on multi-faceted projects and gain solid experience.

“As a Graduate Engineer for the Civil Services Section and the Department for the last year and as a student and undergraduate engineer for the four years before that, I believe that not only have I learnt so much and gained experience in the last five years, I have also contributed to the projects I have been involved in, the sections I have worked during my placements in DoI and to the construction industry in the NT in general,” Cielo said. Cielo, 24, was the first female in her family to enter the engineering field, partly inspired by her father, an engineer for the oil and gas industry. “I grew up being interested in and analysing how things around us work, and how they are designed and constructed,” she said. Josefa, also 24, was drawn to study engineering because she wanted to be part of growth and development projects that help build communities. In her placements in Major Projects and Bitumen sections of the Department, Josefa has worked on regional subdivision developments and road resealing and asphalt projects. “I love to see things develop into something that is beneficial to the community, for example, a greenfield site transformed into a fire station or recreational park. I am passionate about the construction industry and excited to be part of the development of the Northern Territory.”

Both Cielo and Josefa have become role models among their peers and in their community for what they have already achieved in their engineering careers, and each aim to inspire other women to make their careers in engineering or construction. “I have provided advice and information to women to move in the construction industry and identified opportunities for them, bearing in mind that there is a large demand in this industry,” Cielo said. “I envisage that in the future this industry will consist of a more gender balanced workforce such that women who are interested will not be intimidated.” “In achieving my Engineering Degree and now working in construction, I have become a role model to my female family and friends,” Josefa said. “I believe that it is an honour and a great achievement mostly because in my culture, it is not common for women to work in the construction industry, let alone working as leaders or managers.” Josefa sees a long future with DoI and aspires to be a Project Manager. She would also love to work overseas in the future. “My long term dream is to one day become a part of an engineering team to construct roads and subdivisions in my parent’s hometown in Timor Leste,” she said. “I want to increase awareness around the importance of gender diversity.”

This project is currently the biggest road investment project in the Northern Territory and is due for completion in June this year. Once complete, the project will reduce travel time from Palmerston to Darwin and will reduce traffic congestion during peak times. The project will deliver the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive all the way from Palmerston to the Darwin, including major intersection upgrades and the installation of a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. It is anticipated that during peak construction there will be 300 people employed on the project. Currently, the Indigenous employment rate is at 20 per cent. Construction started in December 2014. Work so far has included construction of new inbound lanes, a new bridge to Hidden Valley and new on and off ramps, and upgrades to the Charles Darwin National Park and Bowen Street intersection, and the Stoddart Drive intersection with Tiger Brennan Drive. Major changes to traffic conditions will take place during February as road users are diverted onto the new sections of Tiger Brennan Drive. During February asphalt work on the existing road corridor will commence between Bowen Street and Amy Johnson Avenue. Landscaping around Hidden Valley and the Stoddart Drive intersection will occur. Intersection upgrades will continue and work on the existing Tiger Brennan Drive lanes will commence during February. From March, final asphalt work, street light and traffic light installation and final landscaping will be undertaken.
