Brilliance From globetrotter to Interior Design maven, Jan-Marie Burnham brings the best of the world’s designs to Darwin.

real estate staging, home styling and sourcing artworks, antiques, furniture and accessories, Burnham’s talents are diverse. What do you see as 2015’s strongest interior’s trends? Natural Elements represent a contemporary feeling in design and form, with natural materials used to create furniture and permanent fixtures and fittings. It’s an exciting mix of wood, Metal, stone and leather, blended to instil warmth and depth. Think: Lighter woods for open, airy ambience and darker woods for glamour and masculinity. Integrating these looks with natural materials such as stone and marble, leather and glass is key. Metallics, from burnished coppers to brushed pewters, are pivotal against furniture and accessories crafted from raw natural
nce you’ve lived in Hong Kong, New York, London and then the Middle East, you never quite look at things the same way. For local girl, JanMarie Burnham, a 25-year stint overseas means that she is able to bring the best of the world’s design to Darwin. “My goal is to produce exceptional environments, while meeting the specific and unique needs of each of my clients,” she reveals. "After all, the truly important thing about design is how it relates to people." Burnham’s international training affords her a wealth of perspectives and insights, including the ability to work across a diverse range of clients and cultures. With expertise covering residential and commercial developments, interior decoration, space planning,
materials. Fashion or function … what matters most? To me most it is the value the design brings to the people that use it: aesthetic, cultural, economical, functional and material issues all play a role. We live in a design savvy era where fashion and function should play together in the most effective way. What looks never go out of style? White kitchens, vintage finds, built-in shelving, navy blue, a bold front door, stripes, dramatic lighting and of course, marble! Panton’s 2015 Colour of the Year is Marsala – a robust, earthy winered. How can we incorporate this into our décor, without an overhaul of the house? Its earthiness is a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room in dinnerware, small appliances
and linen, and particularly strong in the bedroom, with bedding and soft furnishings. Pair it with neutrals like warmer taupes and greys, or amber and golden yellows. For a vibrant, modern effect, juxtapose Marsala against turquoise, teal or blue. Darwin is a tropical city and the sun can be strong all year round. If Marsala is not a colour that appeals in 2015, Pantone’s top 10 picks include aquamarine, scuba blue, Lucite green and classic blue. These brighter more lively colours may be better suited to our climate to truly bring an interior to life. How would you describe your signature style? Classic with a Modern Edge. I continually strive to bring an element of uniqueness and surprise to every project.

Port of Darwin WINS
Port of the Year
Darwin is gaining increased recognition for leading the way with the recent announcement that the Darwin Port Corporation won Port of the Year at the 2014 Australian Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards. The prestigious award recognises excellence in port development projects, technical innovation, overall management skills and commercial successes, following a year of major milestones and achievements.
The Darwin Port Corporation’s ability to capitalise on opportunities and strategic advantages has resulted in financial benefits reflected in the increasing before-tax profits recorded over the last four years from $0.758M in 2010/11 to $17M in 2013/14. Darwin Port Corporation CEO, Terry O’Connor says the Port’s integrated leading-edge technologies are crucial to maximising operational efficiency and productivity, managing increased vessel movements and Port pilotage capabilities to support major projects.
The Northern Territory is also attracting interest from international investors following its elevation to first place in the latest CommSec State of the States quarterly economic report, overtaking Western Australia and scoring top in five out of eight economic indicators. The Port of Darwin plays a vital role in supporting the growth of numerous industry sectors, through the strategic development of Port infrastructure and services to build capacity for northern Australia’s economic expansion. Located within one of Australia’s largest natural deep water harbours, the Port of Darwin is strategically positioned in close proximity to important Asian markets and the region’s offshore oil & gas fields. It is the terminus of the AustralAsia Railway which connects Adelaide to Darwin and the only Port between Townsville and Fremantle with full access to multi-modal transport services. The Port’s main commercial wharf at East Arm provides 775 metres of flexible multi-user berths capable of handling containers, bulk liquids, live exports, general and heavy lift project cargoes. The wharf features a specialised bulk materials handling facility including a ship loader and rail dump to service the resources industry. Darwin is Australia’s premier live cattle export port with a record 406,055 head of cattle exported from the Port of Darwin for markets in Asia during 2013/14. This is a 47% increase on the previous year, with Indonesia its largest market, followed by China. East Arm Wharf is currently operating at around 43% capacity and can expand to cater for growing volumes to meet the needs of new and existing Port users. Overall vessel traffic has grown by 107% over the last two years and in 2013/14, general and container cargo increased by a record 53% on the previous year. This was primarily driven by the construction of the $34B INPEX facility and the recently opened $110M ASCO operated Darwin Marine Supply Base. The INPEX Ichthys facility under construction at Bladin Point is Australia’s second largest infrastructure project and Darwin Harbour’s second LNG processing plant, following the construction of the Conoco Phillips plant at Wickham Point in 2006. Located on 8.55 hectares adjacent to East Arm Wharf, the Darwin Marine Supply Base is Northern Australia’s first support facility dedicated to servicing the growing offshore oil & gas industry and provides a major extension to the Port’s capacity and capability.
“The Corporation’s new Vessel Traffic System (VTS) uses the latest technology and provides significant improvements in the management of vessel traffic and coverage of Darwin harbour. The full integration of the HITT V3000 VTS and KleinPort MIS systems is a world first and places the Port of Darwin at the forefront of the maritime industry to meet projected growth. Also completed in 2014 was the Corporation’s $3.8M dredging project which effectively mobilised dredging equipment already in the harbour to enhance access to almost 100%, 24/7 through the main channel by increasing depth from 10.1 to 14.0 metres. Wider transit tidal windows improve overall flexibility for Port operations and reduce berth demands. In turn, this delivers increased cargo loading capacity for the Port and improved revenue per shipment for the exporter,” said Terry O’Connor. With the completion of extensive upgrades at East Arm Wharf, including improved fuel and water services, the Corporation is also moving ahead with ongoing reclamation of a number of water retention ponds to provide additional hardstand, cargo storage and stock pile areas. Pond F, which is strategically located on East Arm Wharf, will add another 2.5 hectares of prime hardstand area which will include reefer points for cold storage containers and facilities for chilled beef exporters, when fully operational later this year. A further seven hectares will soon be added with the reclamation of Ponds K and C,” Terry O’Connor said. The Port of Darwin is well positioned to capitalise on and support the development of northern Australia and the region’s trade needs and is very proud to be Lloyds List 2014 Port of the Year.

Services Darwin-based company JGA Concreting delivers quality all aspects of concrete work – preparation, placement and finishing – on a variety of projects, from government and industrial to residential including high rise apartments and commercial, large and small, we have a large work force that can cater to your requirements. JGA Concreting has been in the concreting business for well over 30 years and the company prides itself on delivering to a very high standard, with a 100 per cent strike rate in terms of customer satisfaction. The concrete works we can do are: • Driveways • Pool areas • Paths • Stairs • Commercials slabs • House Slabs • Suspending Slabs • High Rise Building You name it if it requires concrete work we can do it! If you are interested in something more dramatic than your plain
grey concrete then maybe consider adding colour or stones to your concrete to give it a timeless natural look to suit any modern or traditional home, offices or worksite. These works can be done in the following styles: Colour Concrete Exposed Aggregated Polished Concrete Colour Concrete: Uses colour that is infused into pre-mixed concrete prior to delivery and is not a topping or spray on finish. This ensures any damages such as chips and scratches to your new surface will not change your desired coloured affect, as colour remains the same throughout the slab. The colour is resistant to UV rays and fading and generally does not require sealing or ongoing maintenance. This can turn grey concrete into something special! Choose from a wide range of colours to add life to new or existing concrete. Exposed aggregated: Is concrete that has aggregates (stones,

pebbles etc) mixed into the pre-mix concrete that is exposed through the top of concrete using special techniques so that you can see it. Essentially, it is that type of concrete that looks like it has pebbles or stones set through it. Exposed aggregate concrete is perfect for driveways, entertaining areas, and pathways but can be used anywhere outdoors. The aggregates are available in many different colours, and you also have the option of colouring your concrete a contrasting or complementary colour in order to create a huge range of different looks. The aggregates are also available in different sizes. To finish the concrete, any loose or slurred concrete is removed using an acid wash, and then the whole thing is sealed using a special concrete sealer. Polished Concrete: The surface is polished using progressively finer grinding pads. Existing and new concrete floors
can be polished; on new concrete floors we can add various coloured aggregates and stain to achieve the desired effect. exposed aggregated are achieved by grinding the surface of the concrete slab to remove the cement paste in order to expose the aggregate or stones within the concrete topping mix. Polished floor require an application of a surface sealer or wax to protect and add a luster finish. Your floor will remain durable and resilient for years with minimal maintenance. Plain Grey: New concrete laid that can be covered finished or flat finished. Plain grey can also be broom finished ready for tiling.

Darwin Preschool at La Crèche By Michelle Dryburgh

oth a beautiful and emotional experience, parents wave goodbye to their little ones, often for the first time, and children begin discovering a whole new world. This special transition is taking place in the safe and nurturing environment of La Crèche on the Avenue, a childcare and early learning centre which offers a structured preschool program in the heart of Darwin. Children are encouraged to learn, play and explore, achieving important milestones like learning to write their own names, recognise numbers and words, extend mathematical and scientific concepts, and develop language, social, fine and gross motor skills. Following the Early Years Learning Framework national curriculum, children are offered 15 hours of preschool each week, from 9am to noon Monday to Friday. “There is more structure in the preschool program than in our long day care, and it’s equivalent to the preschool program in schools,” says La Crèche Director Louise de BomfordScott.
19
“We also have weekly assemblies which parents, friends and extended family are welcome to attend to see their child at work and play in the preschool environment.” La Creche is fast approaching a major milestone of its own – celebrating its first year of operation in April. In that time, enrolments in the preschool and childcare programs have quickly grown and staff numbers have risen to 33 educators and several support staff. “La Crèche has grown in leaps and bounds which we are absolutely thrilled about,” says Louise. “We are growing from strength to strength with increasing enrolments and staff numbers. We have a fantastic dedicated team.” Located in Darwin’s prestigious The Avenue precinct, La Crèche boasts modern, state-of-theart facilities, small group sizes and customised play areas for individual age groups. Facilities include large shaded outdoor play areas for developmental activities like bike riding, climbing, building and gardening, as well
as reading, drawing, games and puzzles. Children’s health and safety is the number one priority at La Crèche, which has a strict egg and nut free policy. All meals are lovingly prepared using fresh produce and cooked on site by experienced kitchen staff. This winning combination is a dream come true for Louise, whose dedication and commitment has ensured the centre’s success. A respected name in childcare and early childhood education in Northern Territory for more than 20 years, Louise always longed to run her own centre. Now a mother of four and grandmother of three, Louise had a successful career in nursing prior to her move to childcare. But the need to spend more time with her young family prompted a change. “I loved my work, but I would go 24 hours or more without seeing them, I would miss birthdays and Christmas and special events,” she recalls. “Childcare gave me much more flexibility and I enjoyed it. I’m still so passionate about it and that’s why we’re here today.”

As a young business woman in Darwin, I am incredibly lucky. I have met some of the most amazing people who have started off as clients but quickly become good friends. Outside of work commitments, I take incredible pride in raising awareness for a number of charities. One that really stands out is Beyond Blue. Last year my husband and a group of his friends grew their beards for 12 months, no mean feat in the heat of Darwin, to raise money and more importantly awareness for this incredible cause. Being raised in Darwin, the horse racing industry has always been a big part of my life, especially with my family having strong ties within the racing industry. Last year these two passions crossed paths when one of our horse syndicates generously donated 10 per cent of our winnings to Beyond Blue. Being involved in various racing syndicates has allowed me to meet many different and interesting people. One syndicate in particular is made up of many strong, independent, business women who have mentored me in many aspects of my life. When it boils down to it, our lives are enriched by the people we meet along the way.
As Managing Director of O’Donoghues First National for seven years, Jeremy has volunteered auctioneering services for various events and promotions. He and his team have supported The Ronald McDonald House Charities, Starlight Foundation and lesser known charity organisations such as The Balunu Foundation, which Jeremy arranged to receive $55,000 in charity donations which was raised during the Small Business Association of Australia conference in late 2014. “In the last two years our company has raised close to $70,000 for the local Children’s Ward, and prior to that more than $150,000 for the Red Cross through O’Donoghues Golf Days.” In 2015 Jeremy has already committed himself to being a sponsor to the Palmerston Magpies Football Club. First National is committed to ongoing fundraising efforts, demonstrating its longterm commitment to the Darwin community.

With three children at school there are many activities outside of work to keep me busy. Last year I coached the Port Darwin under-six soccer team which my son played in. It was a rewarding experience watching the kids grow in confidence as their skill level increased. My daughters play netball, and also participate in cheerleading and several other activities throughout the week and on weekends, so working the hours of a real estate professional means time management is very important. The Darwin community offers so many choices for kids in the way of sporting facilities, so helping out where possible, whether through time given or financial support, is very important.
Born and bred in the Territory, Michael studied at CDU then relocated to QLD to complete his degree at USQ where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Marketing. Continually adding to his skill base, Michael has also completed a Diploma in Property Services (Agency Management) recognising him as a fully Licensed Real Estate Agent. But Michael’s involvement in the community stretches beyond his real estate endeavours. “I enjoy my Sunday cricket down at Gardens Ovals with the Waratah Cricket Club, as well as helping to coach children at Milo Cricket clinics throughout the dry season. I have a keen interest in the Thoroughbred industry, and as a member of the Darwin Turf Club I’m actively involved in the events from year to year.” After several years in real estate, Michael’s strategy and vision have resulted in positive outcomes and proven results in sales within the Darwin and Palmerston areas. Michael is an extremely wellgrounded individual and it's his positive and considerate nature that make him a pleasure to deal and conduct business with.

Since opening our doors in 2008, O’Donoghues has become known as one of Darwin’s most trusted and reputable real estate agencies. Jan has been a top achieving real estate sales person first in Queensland and for the last seven years, back home in Darwin. She returned to Darwin in 2007 having previously been a long time resident. She and her husband Neil saw the regrowth of Darwin after Cyclone Tracy, raising three sons in the suburb of Nightcliff and were actively involved in schools and many clubs including Sailing, Athletics, Squash and Dancing. “I joined O`Donoghues First National in 2011 keen to work with this energetic team and build my business further. I’m committed to supporting my personal charity The Cancer Foundation with the Hash House Harriers as well as charitable works for Red Cross and recently the Children`s Ward at Royal Darwin Hospital.” Jan previously ran successful businesses in Darwin including Janz hair Design in Fannie Bay and was nominated for NT Business Woman of the Year. Her excellence in customer service and people skills have transferred into her real estate career.
With a young family I like the freedom that real estate affords me. It takes a bit of juggling at times, but being able to attend my children’s school events and sport is something I’m very fortunate to be able to do. I always find the time to volunteer at my children’s primary school fundraising events and barbeques and regularly donate an Easter hamper for the children’s school raffle. I think it’s important to support local schools and sporting organisations in any way you can, as every little bit makes a difference. Whilst my time is limited when it comes to volunteering in the broader community, I always donate or buy raffle tickets in everything that puts money into our local community. There are many organisations around Darwin that require support from volunteers. Whether it is sorting clothes for Vinnie’s, being a delivery driver for Foodbank NT, or just volunteering at your local school’s next barbeque. It makes a difference to the community.

Like the majority of people with young families, my volunteering and community involvement is centred on my children’s interests and school activities. As a member of the Durack Primary School Council, I get to discover new and exciting ways to contribute to the education of students. Nothing beats the rewarding feeling of seeing projects from their initiation to completion and the impact it has on children. As my children grow and engage in different sports, I find myself involved in more sporting organisations. This allows me to not only meet new people in the community but also assist in any way I can, whether it is fundraising or cooking the BBQ.

From humble beginnings in 1990, as a backyard blind cleaning and maintenance service, Straitline Blinds has grown to become a leader in the manufacture and installation of blinds and awnings – and a trusted name in the Northern Territory. Managing director Adrian Moscheni reveals the winning formula as Territory Life takes a look back at the history of this successful local company….

It was 1994. Local football identity Adrian Moscheni had just returned home to Darwin after a 10 year absence playing football in Adelaide. He was nearing 30, and decided it was time to turn his hand to a new career. With a background as a carpenter and joiner he felt at home in the building industry, and identified significant growth potential in burgeoning local business, Straitline Blinds. Buying into the business, Adrian soon grew frustrated by the long waits for customers between ordering and delivery. “Having to tell people they would have to wait six to eight weeks for a single blind; it pushed me to look heavily into manufacturing.” Adrian initiated the next chapter – beginning smallscale manufacturing and relocating to a commercial premises. Within five years he was the sole owner of Straitline Blinds opening a window of opportunity to pursue his greater vision for the company. “It has really grown incredibly since that time,” he says. “I guess I had no one to answer to, if I wanted to go down a certain path, I did. You learn from your mistakes, but I was lucky enough to make a lot of decisions in those days that allowed the business to grow and improve, and our ability to manufacture today is quite a large part of that.” Crucial for Straitline Blinds to move forward was substantial investment in machinery and plant. What felt like a major risk at the time, paid off in the ability to manufacture high quality window furnishings on par with the best in the world. “There was a lot of hard work involved,” says Adrian. “You can have the best product in the world but you need the service to go with it. Our service is of a very high quality and our people are central to what we do.” As with all trends,
25
popular styles of blinds come and go. But one that looks set to forge ahead is the market for motorised blinds. Adrian recognised the potential to locally manufacture ‘the next big thing’ in blinds about 10 years ago. “The expertise the motor companies are putting into these systems, and the competitiveness of the motorisation industry as a whole, is seeing motorised blinds become more affordable for a wider range of customers,” Adrian says. “The blinds are just one of the components of a house that can be built into a comprehensive building management system. “Lighting, cooling and heating are also becoming commonly motorised to centralise the operation of electronics and improve the efficiency of buildings. “We’ve seen massive growth in this area in multiple storey complexes, government buildings and commercial properties. And it’s an area that’s going to continue growing into the domestic market in the future.” Straitline Blinds currently manufactures 75 per cent of its total sales, supplying blinds for residential and commercial properties across Darwin through to the most rural and remote outskirts of the Territory and as far as Broome, Kununurra and Halls Creek. With protection from biting insects and extreme weather a must, Straitline Blinds has also moved into manufacturing a revolutionary awning system - the Zipscreen™. The product is designed with outdoor entertaining areas, verandas and patios in mind – providing shelter from the elements without
compromising views. This combination of local Australian-made products and quality customer service has seen Straitline become a provider of choice for many major projects, including the Australian Defence Force. Proving no job is too big or too small, Straitline Blinds has supplied up to 4000 blinds for a single project, through to just one blind in a residential bathroom. Looking to the years ahead, Adrian says he is keen to maintain that same flexibility and high level of service as the business continues to grow. “Buying an Australianmade product means a lot to people these days, especially when it comes to furnishing the home,” he says. “We’re not only Australian, but a locally-owned company employing local people, and that means our service goes beyond the point of sale.” Adrian admits his high-profile sporting background has also assisted his businesses journey. He encourages young sportspeople to think ahead to the days beyond the game, and consider how they can use their profile to their advantage. “It doesn’t matter what sport, but if people perceive you to be a talented and dedicated sports person, it does give you a leg up later in life,” he says. “My sporting career has opened a lot of doors for me, quite literally. It gives people something to talk about when I knock on their door.” Above all, Adrian thanks his staff, especially his wife and fellow director Sharron, who joined the business in 2010,” for their commitment and dedication to Straitline Blinds – and the customers, for keeping the business running a quarter of a century on.

ervicing the Territory for more than 20 years, Colliers International Darwin is one of the region’s most diverse real estate agencies. The team is anticipating an interesting year ahead in the local commercial property market, with office vacancies expected to rise, while the industrial and retail markets remain strong. “Our industrial market remains strong for sales and leasing and our retail market continues to improve, however our office market will continue to be challenging in 2015,” says Commercial Agency director Nigel Sharp. It’s an exciting time for Colliers’ commercial department, which enters the year with two major awards from the 2014 REINT Awards of Excellence. Commercial agency associate Craig Inkster was named Commercial Property Manager of the Year, while Nigel received the award for Commercial Salesperson of the Year for the third year running. Nigel says the award wins were the result of hard work, dedication and integrity. “We design truly customised services to transform real estate—often one of the largest expenses for a business—into a competitive advantage. Ultimately, our goal is to accelerate our clients’ success.”
26
The team’s most recent achievements have included corporate accommodation leasing for JKC, new management of the Gulf Centre, property sales on Knuckey Street, McCourt Road, Winnellie Road and McCarthy Close, and leases for Rexal, CBA and Zambrero. Colliers has also sold the most expensive industrial property in the Northern Territory - 5 Wishart Road sold for $10,300,000. Nigel says the key to its success is the internationally recognised brand, and ability to provide a wide array of services. “We are the only agency in Darwin that can provide residential sales, project marketing, residential property management, commercial property sales and leasing, commercial property management, valuation and consultancy, research and in-house marketing,” says Nigel. “We have the best employees in each of these fields and can provide a comprehensive service for our clients. Our national database and resources also provide Colliers with a huge competitive advantage.” “We empower our people to partner with clients, listen to their unique business needs and design an integrated service offering to help them achieve their property goals,” says Nigel.

The success of big industry often relies on an army of smaller forces. This is especially true in the Northern Territory, where small businesses are called upon to support major national and international companies. Their knowledge and expertise is often crucial in the delivery and operation of large-scale projects at a local level. Among them is Fuel Calibration Services, providing calibration, testing and certification services to the defence force, petroleum, mining, aviation and transport industries. Based in Darwin, Fuel Calibration Services’ scope extends to some of the most remote parts of Australia, as well as projects offshore and across the Asia Pacific. That’s no small feat for a team of four, and a business in just its fourth year of operation. Together, they share
more than 30 years experience providing local knowledge and expert service in the Top End. “We offer an extensive knowledge of equipment and extreme attention to detail, combined with the highest standards of accreditation,” says company director Jim Ritchie. “Our clients know they are able to trust us to go the extra mile. We strive to achieve the best possible outcome, every time on every job.” Fuel Calibration Services offers bulk flow meter calibration, fuel depot and terminal maintenance and hydrostat testing as well as Australian and Industrial Standards certification of dial indicators, vernier callipers, micrometers, dumpy levels, scales and balances, thermometers, pressure relief valves,
tensiometers and force meters. Services also include NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) certification of industrial and test gauges, oxygen gauges, pressure transducers, chart recorders, torque wrenches, torque screwdrivers, flow meters and hydrostatic testing. Incorporating a fully equipped workshop and temperaturecontrolled NATA-accredited laboratory, Fuel Calibration Services maintains full ISO 17025 accredited compliance and is recognised for the accuracy and quality of its testing. (ISO 17025 accreditation is an internationally recognised standard that defines requirements for the competence of calibration and testing laboratories.)
“Our technicians are highly proficient in all technical procedures and Australian standards in relation to our scope.” Aiming to provide priority service for equipment requiring urgent calibration, Fuel Calibration Services is usually able to guarantee a 24-hour turnaround time.

All certificates are issued immediately on completion of work, both onsite and off. The diversity of clients and demand for their specialised services sees the Fuel Calibration Services team travel far and wide. Jim says covering such a large geographical
catchment is one of the team’s biggest challenges – but also the greatest highlight. “The people we meet and some of the locations we get to travel to are second to none,” he says. “Each new job or project brings a new challenge and we love it.”

Comments by the Australian Prime Minister, Federal Minister for Industry, and some southern universities have spotlighted the UK based STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) initiatives. A local school, The Essington School Darwin, is also developing a STEM approach to Science and Mathematics education to enhance its programs. The school has been recognized nationally and internationally for its outstanding educational outcomes, and its innovative programs The Essington School Darwin will be the first school in Australia to fully embrace the STEM philosophy, and to use this program to extend its Science and Mathematics curriculum. Principal David Cannon said: “The UK Government has long identified STEM education as a major priority at both school and university levels and sees STEM subjects as integral to the UK’s success. In 2014 we sent three teachers to the national UK STEM Centre at the University of York to research their programs and bring back ideas and programs. In 2015 we

will now begin to include STEM programs across the curriculum and year levels”. STEM Programs have spread to the United States and other leading western countries in recent years. It is increasingly being seen as an educational program designed to prepare primary and secondary students for university study in the four STEM areas. Siobhan Nox, Assistant Principal Curriculum, who visited the UK STEM Centre said: “Our School’s Working Party is involved in planning STEM programs at both the primary and secondary levels. The exciting bit, however, is working on designs for STEM Centre buildings for the Junior School and Middle School”.

Accrete has successfully combined a training facility that services both corporate and blue collar industries.
According to Michael Apathy, Director of Safety and Business Development, Accrete has maintained its position as a leading Registered Training Organisation because of the ability to recognise and respond to client needs across a wide range of industry sectors.
‘ERT was initially focussed on supporting oil and gas growth across the Top End and the Asia Pacific region. It was through this that we recognised an increasing need for training services in a broader range of industries such as construction, civil, mining and defence.’
Once identified, Accrete put in place the required systems, procedures and strategies to meet this need. After achieving approvals and certifications not previously available in Northern Australia, Accrete has become the only Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation

This occurs in a multitude of different ways ranging from generational change from parents to their children, staff member buyouts, targeted acquisitions by competitors, general sale on the open market or where there are no buyers, the closure of the business and its liquidation. The sale of a business is generally an incredibly complex process, far more complicated than most simple real estate transactions and involves a multitude of different factors that all need to be taken into consideration to determine an appropriate price. Some of these factors and their consideration are as follows.
44
A
professional business broker possesses the skills to analyse these multiple factors and present them in a logical and understandable fashion. In doing so, they enable a maximum price to be achieved which is generally significantly higher than that achievable by a person not in possession of these skills. Knowledge of the business and familiarity with its operations is a very different skillset to assessing it from a market perspective and communicating that to a potential buyer, even if the buyer is already known. A comparison can be made with other professions such as accountants: eg most business owners are familiar with their accounts and profit and loss statements and could submit their own tax return. However, a quality accountant will generally get both a higher tax return as well as provide advice that increases business profitability by more than they cost. Similarly, a business broker should generally be expected to achieve an increase in sale price significantly in excess of their cost of involvement resulting in more dollars in the owner’s pocket. Terracorp Industries
Just three years after opening the doors, the Yarrawonga tank manufacturer is increasing its production capabilities and expanding its range to include a greater variety of tank sizes. It’s an exciting time for the locally-owned business which started at the tail of the Global Financial Crisis. Since opening in 2011, Terracorp Industries has doubled its workforce without compromising on quality or customer service while still maintaining its family-owned feel. “We take great pride in our products and service to our customers and we try to go the extra mile to ensure we manufacture and supply products that are of the highest standards possible,” says director Daryn Kerr.
46
“We consistently use a range of quality assurance checks to measure the quality of our products. Our motto is ‘Best Product, Best Service’ and we strive to achieve this with every client.” Those clients include everyone from rural and residential domestic buyers to pastoral companies, government, industry and local businesses. “As a business man he gives the same attention to every customer whether they be big business or the mum and dad domestic tank buyer,” reveals office manager Yvonne.
“He believes every product that leaves our yard, regardless of who purchases it, should be of the highest standard and quality Terracorp can produce.” Daryn says much of the business growth has been fuelled by the rapid expansion of projects in the area like the Inpex Ichthys LNG project and AA Co abattoirs at Livingstone as well as mining projects like the Ranger uranium mine and McArthur River zinc, lead and silver mine.
“
We don’t like to brag about our achievements, we let our business speak for its self,” says Daryn.
“We don’t like to brag about our achievements, we let our business speak for its self,” says Daryn. “I get great satisfaction when people compliment us on either the quality of our products or the service they have received. When we get repeat customers or new clients who have been referred by an existing customer that indicates to me that we are doing our job right,” says Daryn. All Terracorp Industries products are designed and manufactured on
site at Yarrawonga, including a range of rotationally moulded polyethylene tanks from 550 to 30,000 litres. Suitable for use in many different applications, tanks can be selected from the existing product range or custom designed with a range of colours to choose from. The company also manufactures waste storage tanks, septic tanks, cartage tanks, spillage bunds, gear covers, tubs and tro ughs. Daryn and his wife Melissa were providing fencing and watering solutions for pastoral companies for their
business Terracorp NT when the opportunity arose to buy the tankmanufacturing plant. “I had no previous experience in manufacturing or tank sales. As a matter of fact, I had never been involved in sales at all,” admits Daryn. “I had an idea that I could utilise the tankmaking business to complement our Terracorp NT business. My idea has been proven right and our sales have exceeded our projected expectations.
“When I go home exhausted at the end of a busy day of sales, meetings, office work, and time spent in the work shed, I know it was the right decision to start up Terracorp Industries.”

The new face of a global leader in recruitment B y M ichelle D rybu r gh
An international recruitment company operating on a grassroots level in the Northern Territory is welcoming 2015 with a new name and a new look…
A
corn Global Recruitment has officially launched its new name, Synaco– a hybrid of the company’s UK origins and global partnership with Synergie. The multi-award winning group delivers local and international recruitment from over 600 branches across the globe. It is instrumental in placing more than 6500 people into temporary assignments for up to 1000 companies across the world every week. Also delivering training to more than 1000 individuals each month, Acorn posted a record turnover of-$200 million last financial year. As founder and managing director Matt Southall explains, it hasn’t always been this way. The business started out relatively small in the UK in 1992, but quickly expanded with the addition of new branches, acquisitions and award wins. “I started in the recruitment industry in 1985 when it was very much a young emerging market in the UK, fast moving, ever changing and enjoying high margins,” Matt recalls. “The opportunity to earn big bonuses and help
48
people find work was both exciting and satisfying. I also enjoyed the chance to build relationships with clients while servicing their ongoing needs, something totally different to my previous job selling capital equipment.” Partnering with global recruiter Synergie in 2007, Acorn was launched into the international market. The boost came at a time when it was needed most. The Global Financial Crisis and subsequent UK recession had left employment reeling, but new opportunities were opening abroad in the growing sectors of mining, oil, gas, infrastructure, IT and healthcare. Acorn’s arrival in Australia followed conversations with an existing Australian client which resulted in 20 skilled tradesmen being transferred to Western Australia from the UK. The first candidates arrived in September 2011 and the initial success prompted Matt and Director of Operations Scott Liddle to visit Australia for further talks. “The sales activity was predominantly targeted at the blue collar requirements within the mining sector,” Matt recalls.
“The interest generated was incredible with multiple orders received from a variety of clients, for significant volumes of skilled trades required urgently.” The Australian division of the group, Acorn Global Recruitment was incorporated in 2012, and a head office opened in Adelaide along with the appointment of Director Mike Otty. A Perth office opened shortly after, followed by the Darwin office in January 2013. Under its new title, Synaco Global Recruitment will look to expand its acquisitions and provide even greater assistance to industry across Australia. “The company will continue to evolve its service offerings, ensuring we support our clients’ needs in a proactive fashion to underpin their success and growth,” Matt says. “We also aim to continuously develop a company culture that makes us an employer of choice for our internal staff and contractors, and uphold our commitment to continuously promote their success, support their weaknesses and provide a career path for one and all.”
S y n a c o . W o r k i n g f o r t h e T e r r it o r y The newly branded Synaco has been hard at work in the Territory for the past two years. Arriving in Darwin in 2013, Acorn has established itself as a reliable and effective recruitment agency, servicing more than 20 local organisations, including local government. Australian director Mike Otty explains Synaco also provides consulting services to proactively map clients’ future resource requirements while delivering currently required skills. The result is a pool of work-ready candidates who are qualified, referenced, and readily available at short notice. “We provide labour hire and permanent recruitment services across all blue
collar and white collar disciplines, continuously refreshing our candidate searches nationwide. This assists in catering to the often transient nature and seasonality of the Northern Territory labour force,” Mike says. Synaco’s Territory clients consist largely of referrals from other existing clients, proving the power of word of mouth and referral by proven reputation. Mike says the company’s commitment to the Territory goes beyond recruitment, and Synaco intends to invest in community development programs including assisting the disadvantaged to reach their full potential. “We are all too aware
