EVERY STUDENT MAT TERS Taminmin’s 2015 Year 12 highest ATAR student, Cheya Clarke, commenced at Taminmin in year 7 ensuring a smooth and continuous quality learning experience. Cheya has taken advantage of the many opportunities at Taminmin such as the Leading Learner program, International and Interstate travel, participating in the school musical and following her sporting interests. Principal Miriam McDonald said that Taminmin College is the only Independent Public School that provides a seamless learning environment from years 7 to 12. Like Cheya students can enjoy all of their secondary schooling on the one campus.
The College includes a Vocational Education and Training (VET) section and is the only school in the Northern Territory with an agricultural facility. Miriam is also proud of the 98% NTCET completion rate achieved this year. Students from year 5 can enter the Young Scholars program at Taminmin. This enables students to undertake challenging and innovative experiences at the college as well as assuring them a place in the Leading Learner or Aspire programs from year 7. Taminmin College provides success for all students with a range of pathways to access employment and higher education.

SENIOR SECONDARY COLLEGE
Palmerston Senior College (PSC) is an Independent Public School that offers a holistic approach for your son or daughter through their senior secondary schooling, Year 10 to Year 12 and has a Special Education Centre catering for students Year 7 to Year 12. We work with our students to structure education pathways best suited to their individual strengths, interest and career aspirations. In 2015, 9% of PSC students seeking entry to university achieved an ATAR of 90 or higher. Two students, Briana Kemp and Lukeus Ryan achieved ATAR scores of 95.5 and 95.2 respectively. Both Briana and Lukeus attended Palmerston public primary
schools and Rosebery Middle School, completing their schooling at PSC. During 2015, Briana focused totally on completing Year 12. Now that she has completed, she is exploring university options that are available to her. Briana is interested in studying Psychology at Charles Darwin University. For Lukeus balancing the demands of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Studies and Maths Methods was extremely challenging. His efforts and commitment have been well worth any sacrifices he may have made as he was recognised as DUX of the College. In 2016, Lukeus is aiming to study Engineering at Charles Darwin University.

MILKWOOD STEINER SCHOOL Steiner-inspired playgroups for young children and families have operated in Darwin and Litchfield since 1996 and were instrumental in the opening of Milkwood Steiner School in 2004. What first began with 26 students at the old Nightcliff Scout Hall now sees, eleven years on, 70 students – from Pre-School to Class 6 – attending Milkwood. The schools campus, now with a permanent foundation in Berrimah, is surrounded with beautiful gardens, experiential playground and a large adjoining bush block. Milkwood Steiner School offers an internationally recognised curriculum of creative and inquisitive learning that really works for children. As the only school in Darwin offering an alternative to the Australian Curriculum, the approach is designed around understanding emotional and physical development of children. Milkwood promotes self-development thus allowing children to embrace what they enjoy as individuals through artistic expression. Above all, the aim is to foster a love of learning. Using music, art, language, story telling and movement as primary methods of learning, Milkwood students develop their imaginations and gain building blocks of knowledge and important life skills. Learning happens inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom students draw, knit, sew, dance and carefully create beautiful, colourful books to record their personal learning journeys, deepening their understanding of traditional subjects such as numeracy and literacy whilst furthering their artistic skills. Outside, the children have created organic kitchen gardens and this year collaborated to build a pizza oven from scratch, using termite mounds turned to clay and decorated with individually made tiles inspired by nature. You may even observe local author Diane Lucas teaching nature studies on the bush block, further fostering the children’s connection with the world around them. English and mathematics are taught, along with science, history and geography in a multi-sensory way through a rich experience of stories, practical activities along with visual and performance arts. A mathematics lesson may incorporate drawing PA L M E R S T O N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 5
to better understand geometry, or singing and moving to learn number patterns and times tables, or even more practical projects such as running a mini market for business maths. Handwork projects are created throughout the school, developing fine motor skills and creating useful items for the classroom such as sewn cushions, woven and embroidered bags, knitted recorder cases, woodwork items and felted pictures. All the children learn a musical instrument starting with recorder in class 1 and a string instrument in class 3 upwards with regular performances for the school and Greater Darwin community. Milkwood students’ love of learning is a credit to the passionate teachers who develop a wide range of artistically and academically integrated activities that make learning fun and relevant. Milkwood School and students are well supported by a caring community made up of parents, support staff and dedicated Darwin community members. In 2015 Milkwood Steiner School Class in Year 5 and 6 were honoured with the Darwin City Council’s Young Author’s Award for primary school for the book that they co-wrote and illustrated. Class 1 and 2 were grateful to receive first place in the school category for the Rights on Show 2015 exhibition ‘SOIL, Can you dig it?’. Their exhibit displayed handmade, mischievous ‘seed gnomes’ made from the resources in the ‘bush block’. The ethos of Milkwood states ‘We provide your child with a personal learning and creativity journey to help you raise your child to be a thinking, feeling human being. Your child develops strong core values and a true sense of self so he/she may readily & confidently adapt to new situations in a fast paced modern world.’ Congratulations Milkwood for achieving great success this year.

QUENTIN KILIAN (GAICD, FAIM, CIPS, PHF, GradCertMigLaw, Commissioner for Oaths NT)
Chief Executive Officer Real Estate institute of Northern Territory (REINT) www.reint.com.au
In January 2015 the Northern Territory Government, through Treasurer Minister Tollner, dramatically altered the First Home Buyer support in the NT by removing all stamp duty assistance and all assistance for a person wishing to purchase an existing property, and increasing the post-settlement grant on a new property to $26,000. I would state that this decision, from day one, flew in the face of the advice given by the real estate profession. What it means is that unless you are willing to purchase a new property or off the plan, you get no support at all as a first home buyer. And even if you are buying new, you now have to find an additional saving of around $25,000 for stamp duty, which you pay up front. So essentially, what you may get back in a grant is simply replacing what you already shelled out on stamp duty. So how is this working out for the Government. Earlier this year they were very excited about their projected surplus. In the mid-year review this surplus has not returned to a deficit, in large part because of the reduced income through stamp duty, because a lot fewer people are purchasing properties. Even though the prices have fallen and interest rates are at their lowest level. This First Home Buyers decision has also impacted massively in areas such as Alice Springs where buyers don't have a choice of buying new properties as none are currently being built! But, if there was an incentive there are quite a number of existing properties in the sub $400,000
PA L M E R S T O N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 6
range ready to occupy. But rather than just raise a problem, the real estate profession has been offering a solution to the Government for the past year, which has fallen on deaf ears. In fact in December this year Minister Tollner wrote to a resident, in a letter reposted on Facebook, and essentially told this person that everything was OK; travelling fine; no problem and therefore no need for change. It must be so nice to exist in your own world and see everything through heavily tinted rose coloured glasses. The solution is really quite simple. Remove the stamp duty requirement for First Home Buyers of existing property, up to the first $450,000 of the purchase. This will save these buyers upwards of $20,000 extra that they have to find. The government will not 'lose' money as it's already forgoing that revenue and it will encourage buyers to enter the market. When the first home buyers come back in then the 'aspirational buyers' who want to move up can purchase their next home and the 'empty nesters' who want to down size can sell their properties and the housing cycle is as it should be. It's time to take off the rose coloured glasses as see the world as it really is. There is a problem. A big problem. One that was caused by an ill considered decision, but one that can be fixed simply and quickly. The time to act was 12 months ago, but we will accept action now.
TALENTED ENTERTAINER W H O N E E D E D A “ R E A L J O B ” T O PAY T H E B I L L S … . A N D U LT I M AT E LY BECAME A CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER IN THE NOT FOR PROFIT SEC TOR. “The sporadic income that comes with being a performer doesn’t get the rent paid, so I needed an income while I waited for that ‘big break’’’ she says. That ‘real job’ turned into a successful career in health administration. A senior role in Health in New South Wales became the stepping-stone to a twenty year career in both the public and private health sectors, culminating in her appointment to her current role as the CEO of not for profit, FCD Health. A primary health care service provider, FCD is a joint venture between the Flinders and Charles Darwin Universities. “I am inspired by seeing an idea that is worthy of pursuit and actually making it come to fruition. With its focus on service provision, joining FCD allowed me to balance my career and personal goals,” she says. Robyn sees her role as CEO as being a facilitator, matching the right person to the right job. “My philosophy is when you employ someone it’s because you believe they have the skills to do the job so you have to back off, trust them and let them do it. My job is to be there to provide mentoring and support when needed – not micromanage,” she says. Robyn believes that successful women are comfortable in their own skin, not afraid to shy away from admitting what they don’t know as well as celebrating what they do. “I have a poster on my office wall that cites the four pillars of wisdom – I was wrong; I’m sorry; I don’t know; I need help - the things it’s important to be able to admit, even if only to yourself, if you want to be an effective leader. It’s a mantra that keeps me grounded,” she says. While her career path may have changed from her early days as a singer in a band, Robyn doesn’t regret where the journey has taken her. “While I do still perform from time to time, usually at charity fundraisers, my ‘big break’ didn’t happen in quite the way I thought it would all those years ago, but I wouldn’t change a thing” she says. Our agenda responds to the extraordinary rapid changes across the world, and provides a vision for how Australia can embrace and position ourselves to seize the next wave of economic prosperity. Technology and science are evolving faster than ever, and the internet is disrupting traditional jobs and industries. Australians have no shortage of smart ideas. You only have to look at great discoveries and inventions like wifi, the Cochlear implant and penicillin to name a few. The problem has been that Australians who want to turn their brilliant ideas into great businesses struggled with capital. That’s about to change through the $1.1 billion of measures that will transform Australia from an innovation laggard into an innovation pacesetter. Australia is well-placed to take advantage of the opportunities presented by these exciting times, but to succeed there are areas where we need to improve – this is why we are doing things like aligning our tax system and business laws with the culture of entrepreneurship and innovation we are seeking to create. I am confident that the ideas boom will be fuelled by universities, startups, industry and agriculture, embracing risk and working together like never before. Charles Darwin University is one of the most innovative universities in Australia and is already leading the way. As Prime Minister Turnbull says it is an exciting time to live in Darwin – In my view our innovation agenda makes it all the more exciting. I look forward to the local clever ideas being transformed into great businesses. I know this will happen because here in the Territory we are resilient, resourceful, creative and talented. To add to this Territorians have the Turnbull Government in their corner.

NEVER LIKED BEING REFERRED TO AS STRONG. “I’ve never liked that word, but I’ve come to realize that I am. When I didn’t think I was strong, other people told me I was, and I used to hate that,” she says. Acknowledging her inner strength now as a quality, Wendy feels that she has reached a point in her life where she is content with who she is. “I like who I’ve become. I’m comfortable with where I’m going, and what type of life I’ve led and am leading,” she says. Possessing a solid sense of values, Wendy believes that successful women voice their opinion, and she has learnt over the years to stand up for herself. “It’s quite interesting to see people’s different reactions to that,” she laughs. As the licensee of the Telstra Business Centre NT and Telstra Store Darwin, Wendy is one of only two female Telstra licensees in the Territory. Starting her career with Telstra as a telephonist in South Australia, Wendy always toyed with the idea of becoming a small business owner, especially once she relocated to Darwin in her early thirties.
“I really love small business, and I could see that there was a big gap here in the market,” she says. Inspired by her desire to provide for her family, Wendy, along with her husband Gavin, originally established the business as a Telstra store in 2003, before building up to open a business centre in 2007. They now employ over 45 staff. Motivating those around her with her strong leadership skills, Wendy believes consistency is the key, and being very transparent in what is right and wrong. “You cannot favour one staff member over another. You need to be consistent in your approach. The standards are there for everybody and it’s for each person to attain them and reach for them,” she says. Keeping her finger on the pulse with her staff, Wendy also believes in being approachable and providing a support network for them should they be experiencing difficulties. It seems that word strong is a fitting description for this tenacious business owner afterall.

It was the rugged beauty and remoteness of areas like Lajamanu and Groote Eylandt that eventually tamed Ruth’s rebellious nature. “There’s something about living in a remote community that makes you appreciate what you have and the people that you surround yourself with,” she says. As the Director of the NT Property Council, Ruth advocates for her members and their interests, all of whom contribute to the Northern Territory property market in various ways. “I try and make it easy for their voice to be heard by the decision makers. It’s been really rewarding to be able to share their views and their passion for the industry with ordinary Territorians,” says Ruth. According to the Property Council of Australia website, property directly accounts for 17.9% of the Northern Territory’s economic activity, and the Council aims to highlight the Territory as the best place to invest, manage and own property. Ruth’s vivacious personality, ability to network and the confidence to strike up a conversation with anyone has enabled her to excel
in the role. “I’ve managed to get some new members for the Property Council just by starting a conversation with people I meet on the street, or at events, or even in my own building,” she says. Ruth believes that an important quality successful women share is the strength to push themselves outside their comfort zones. “I think that willingness to take a deep breath and take on whatever challenge faces you is the key to success. For me, it’s also about never giving up and having faith in myself,” she says. Citing her two children, sevenyear-old Chloe and two-year-old Amelia as her motivation to achieve, Ruth is also inspired by the many women who have juggled motherhood and their professional lives. “I know how hard it is, and I find it so motivating to see that it can be done, and done well,” she says. While Ruth’s itchy feet may be settled for now, her desire to roam free is still strong. “I hate to waste my weekends,” laughs Ruth. “I love getting outdoors with my girls and going fishing or camping.”

The complex has elevated cabins connected by walkways through the trees and palm gardens, refreshing swimming pools, an elevated open restaurant with views across the harbour, boat ramp, wildlife and natural beauty galore. Crab Claw Island’s ‘Breezes’ restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a wide selection of tasty, al a carte meals. The fully licensed bar holds a selection of wines, icy cold beers and soft drinks that will quench the thirst and cleanse the pallet of any weary traveller. Lovely ‘outback NT’ experience. Crab Claw is one of those places to just relax and dwindle away time, either fishing or relaxing by

the pool. We stayed here for 6 nights, but could have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly, nothing is a bother. Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway… the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories, the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday fare, high-chairs and knives and forks just the right size for little hands. We have two accommodation options to suit families who need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear of the main walkway, approximately 15m from the beach. They are twice the size
of our standard cabins and fitted with a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively ‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage. It has two bedrooms, each with a double and two single beds; a large balcony with a gate, dining table and chairs and BBQ.

The spinal column has 3 very important functions. It supports the body’s weight, provides flexibility for movement and protects the spinal cord and the nerve roots from damage. As babies, we are born with 33 bones in our spine (vertebrae) but as adults we end up with 26. Four fuse to make our tailbone (coccyx) and five fuse to make the back of the pelvis (sacrum). The first vertebrae in our spine is called the Atlas. Atlas is a character from Greek mythology who, after losing a fight, was turned to stone and had to carry the weight of the Earth on his shoulders. This vertebrae were given his name as it carries the entire weight of the head. Around one quarter of the spine’s length is made up of fibrocartilage, this is due to presence of the intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers between our vertebrae. These discs expand in the absence of gravity, so as a result astronauts returning from space may be 1.5 to 2 inches taller than when they left. Gravity’s effect on these discs is also the cause of humans shrinking between a quarter to half an inch every decade after the age of 40. It also why we are generally taller in the morning than at night because of the daily effect of gravity upon the body. Four out of five adults will experience some type of spinal pain during their lifetime. Lower back pain is the most common type of spinal pain experienced. This is because the lower spine twists and bends more than any other part of

our spine, it also bears the weight of our upper body. Sometimes back pain can be caused by other ailments in the body. Pain experienced in the middle of the back, which becomes worse after eating, may be a sign you have a stomach ulcer. And if you experience an intermittent back pain that reaches your groin, it could indicate you have kidney stones. Regular check-ups with your chiropractor, along with exercise) helps your spine to be at its very best, make an appointment with your loal CAA NT Chiropractor today.

In 2016…..embrace YOUR goals & put thoughts into ACTION!! The key is to be accountable. As a naturopath I help you work towards your health goals….the thing is – I can’t make the changes for you….YOU MUST do them. Losing weight requires changes in food & lifestyle habits – as simple as that. Yes, hormone imbalances may be involved too….but I can’t take the herbs for you to make it happen. You must do something for yourself….my role is to keep you accountable & on track. While working with my clients, I see their weakness or vulnerabilities. Extra guidance or encouragement is needed…to help move forward. I may send texts to check in on your exercise regime…or asking for pics of your meals – I’m here to support you towards Everlasting Health. My passion is for all to have a healthy body, mind & spirit….& to have Life Balance. Need extra emotional support or direction….flower essences are amazingly supportive – especially when an individual ‘potion’ is blended just for you. I can help you find the root concern for your circumstances….then help you to step forward. There is no place for inactivity. Planning to start a family in 2016….I’m by your side providing you all the information & support you need – but you need to take the steps forward to make it happen. Life throws us many hurdles….it’s up to us to jump over them & achieve….if we ignore them they become obstacles. Me….I want to beat those obstacles!!! So….it’s time to act like that famous clothing brand….or the even more amazing Greek Winged Goddess of Victory - Nike….Just Do IT!!

WHEN TRAINING MY CLIENTS A N D AT H L E T E S AT C R O S S F I T T E R R I T O R Y.
Whether your goal is weight loss or physical performance, planning and goal setting is imperative for success.
HERE ARE MY TIPS.
BRENDAN SOUTHWICK Crossfit Territory www.crossfit-territory.com
1. HAVE A GOAL OR END STATE This means putting on paper realistic measurements or data points that you plan to achieve . 2. SET A TIMELINE Realistic timelines are a must. Use your goal and work backwards by breaking it half, then quarters then add a date next to it. 3. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW Find a coach that is willing to sit down and help you set the goal and time line. On occasion I have to guild my clients and athletes through this as it’s generally uncharted waters for them. Having done this process and appreciation before it will make the above steps easier. 4. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID Make sure you understand your plan and why you are doing it. When time gets tough, it will help you push through a sticking point. 5. LOOP THE PROCESS If you have a good coach, they will have planned the year generally using this process. Whether your year is broken into monthly blocks or three monthly, it doesn't matter as long as you understand that each block transitions to the next and new check points are set. You may have bad days and weeks however, you will still move forward towards your end state.

WHAT HAPPENS
WHEN A SEXY BODY-BUILDER AND LIFE COACH FROM NEW ZEALAND MEETS AN ENERGETIC FIGURE CHAMPION AND STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH FROM RURAL VIC TORIA? For Vania Primmer and Liv Miller, it resulted in the Ultimate Dream Team. Developed in Darwin, the Ultimate Dream Team is a program designed to help men and women achieve their personal transformation goals. The only transformation program of its kind in Australia, it encourages people to fully transform their bodies and their lives through mindfulness, high raw, low animal product nutrition, resistance exercise, and regular accountability sessions. A Master NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Practitioner, Vania is passionate about peace and nutrition, and believes that there would be less violence and conflict in the world if everyone understood the importance of nutrition. “The truth is that the cells in our bodies, in our minds and in our hearts are made from what we put in our mouths. Nutrition is the foundation for all health - mental, emotional, physical and sexual,” says Vania. Leading and motivating by example, Vania says that being congruent with what you teach is important – you must walk the talk. “I teach people about the Hero's Journey and help them understand that P A L M E R S T O N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 31
trials, tribulations, tests and challenges are all part of a heroes journey, to expect them and know that they are proof that they have stepped out of the ordinary into the extraordinary, and the reward will be worth it,” she says. Complimenting Vania’s holistic approach, Liv focuses on the supplementation and advanced training component of the business. Outspoken and ambitious, Liv believes that passion and a sincere fire within are qualities successful women share. “Without a true love for your work, you cannot see beyond the norm,” she says. Being consistent and staying true to herself are what keep Liv focused on her goals, and she feels it’s not hard to be successful when you enjoy the journey. “I don’t believe success needs to be monetary. I feel more successful than I ever dreamed possible lately when I see my clients turning their lives around. It’s funny how once you master the health component the facets all fall into place,” she says.
