2015 AUSTRALIAN

TRAINING AWARDS

The Northern Territory’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector celebrated last month as Territorians brought home two national awards and named runner-up in a third award at the 2015 Australian Training Awards which were held in Hobart. Nhulunbuy resident Karen Rose, who studied a Diploma of Logistics was named the 2015 Vocational Student of the Year, becoming the first winner from the field of logistics. Karen credits her studies to helping her adjust to her changing work environment during the curtailment of operations at Rio Tinto Alcan. “The winding down of operations at the Gove alumina refinery was stressful, but my focus on completing my diploma helped me through that difficult period,” Karen said. “This is an immensely proud achievement personally but also as a representative of the Northern Territory and logistics.” Philadelphia Hughes, who studied Certificate IV in Frontline Management at Charles Darwin University, was named 2015 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year. Philadelphia described her decision to study a VET course as life changing as she progressed from being a young woman who didn’t finish high school, to one who has now won a national award. “It still hadn’t quite sunk in that I had actually won, because the other

nominees in my category were so talented,” Philadelphia said the morning after the awards ceremony. “I’m looking forward to being a part of the Training Awards next year, mentoring the finalist as they prepare for the national awards. “The 2016 Australian Training Awards are being held in Darwin and I’m excited with the possibility of next year’s Territory finalists getting national recognition on home soil. “Entering the training awards has helped me grow, especially in my self-esteem and my confidence. “I really feel that I can achieve anything if I work hard enough. Also, I have met some truly inspirational people along the way and have made great connections,” Philadelphia said. Katherine based electrical apprentice Taylor Fishlock was named runner-up 2015 Australian Apprentice of the Year. All award winners at the Australian Training Awards received $5,000 and runners-up won $2,500. Nominations for the 2016 NT Training Awards open 1 March 2016.

CRACK THE CHRISTMAS PART Y

DRESS CODE

STRUGGLING TO D E C I D E W H AT T O WEAR TO YOUR A N N UA L O F F I C E CHRISTMAS PA R T Y ?

Keep in mind that a certain kind of work related dress code remains no matter where your party is being hosted and you should always steer to the conservative side if in doubt of the venue you are attending. Unless you are going to a barbeque at a park (or the beach) this cuts thongs out as suitable footwear. As a general rule you should avoid clothes that are overly revealing (definitely no cleavage for ladies or plumbers crack for the men). Sneakers or jeans are not appropriate for either sex for a dinner or office party, Instead aim to dress as you would to attend an interview within your chosen field and then dress that look up one notch. Cocktail dresses and moderate heels are a good staple choice with no sheer items or anything that is too short or too tight. Trousers with a shirt (collared or un collared depending on

D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 10

the location) with slip on shoes are a safe bet. Avoid being too casual, if in doubt I always say dress up rather than down in all areas except for your makeup or (facial hair) - this should be kept to a classic natural appearance. If you are brave you can opt for seasonal colours and dressy fabrics, which will help you, stand out from the crowd or introduce some colour in the accessories you choose. Once you are dressed and on your way you can focus on the next Christmas party hurdle‌ how to behave.J

THE KEBAB HOUSE:

DARWIN’S TURKISH DELIGHT

It’s no secret – Mesut and his talented team at The Kebab House make the best kebabs in Darwin, and have been doing so for years. And now, with two new take-away spots opening, The Kebab House is set to become one of Darwin’s largest food chains, offering tough competition for the city’s increasing number of internationally owned fast food franchises. Delicious, healthy, affordable food and a business that’s locally owned – it doesn’t get much better. In addition to shops in Fannie Bay and Darwin’s city centre, a third Kebab House is set to open in the Casuarina Square food court on December 7, ready to fuel hungry shoppers during the festive season, and a fourth in Palmerston next March. While it is a busy time for the growing business, Mesut and his clever young team are excited to expand, and to reach further corners of the Top End with their mouthwatering traditional Turkish food. It’s a lot of hard work, says Mesut, but The Kebab House team loves what they do.

D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 12

Their hard work and passion is evident in the success of the growing business and the superior quality of their meltin-your-mouth kebabs. There’s a reason why people young and old, rich and poor, tourists and locals, meat-lovers and vegetarians alike flock to The Kebab House. These kebabs stand apart from your typical drunken kebab eaten at 3am. Juicy meat slowcooked on a rotisserie, crunchy salad ingredients, and Mesut’s secret mild chilli sauce, all wrapped in warm pide bread handmade daily; The Kebab House kebabs are a healthier fast food option, offering an alternative to greasy burgers and chips. There’s so much more to The Kebab House than delicious Turkish kebabs. It’s about enjoying local produce and supporting local business too – a win for everybody.

‘TIS THE SEASON. IT ’S CHRISTMAS!!! W E L L A L M O S T.

And that means gift-giving time. Isn’t it surprising how many people you end up having to give gifts to?! I always like to have a few homemade gifts on hand for those mum’s of my daughters friends or neighbours or distant relatives who pop round for a festive drink with a tray of handmade goodies for you, while you are left wondering if you can gift wrap toilet paper for them. Avoid the embarrassment and make a few batches of this lemon curd.

LEMON CURD

Sweet and zingy, you’d never know it is healthy. It’s a perfect topping for the pavlova (especially because you’ll have 4 egg yolks you won’t know what to do with!) but it also works well on crepes, crackers, on cookies or sourdough toast. Pop it into pretty sterilizer jars and top with festive fabric and ribbon. INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup butter • 1/2 cup raw honey or maple syrup or rice syrup • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice • 1/4 cup lemon zest • 4-6 egg yolks (4 is good if you want to use the leftover yolks from making pavlova) • 2 tablespoons pure cream, organic is best (optional)

EQUIPMENT ESSENTIALS • Small saucepan • Whisk • Strainer • Zester • Glass tupperware or sterilized jars MAKE ME UP Melt the butter in your saucepan on low heat. Once melted, add your rice syrup and mix well. Remove the mixture from the heat and add lemon juice and lemon zest. Mix. Then whisk in the egg yolks, one at a time until all well combined and return to the stove over low heat. Whisk continually until the curd starts to thicken. Remove from the heat and strain into your glass container leaving the zest behind. Let cool to room temperature, then cover with the lid of your glass dish and store in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Alternatively you could just keep a few copies of Eat like a Cosmopolitan Hippy on hand for unexpected gift bearing visitors. This recipe is from my clean eating cookbook Eat like a Cosmopolitan Hippy rrp $49.95 available at www.cosmohippy.com.au and selected stockists. See website for details. CELEBRATING AND RELEASING 2015 D O YO U H AV E YO U R X M A S B A L L S ?

It’s hot and hectic as the final curtain falls upon this year, with so much going on, mindfulness slips into another party, getting projects finished or holiday planning. 2015 happened for you the way it did for a reason! Where was your focus, where did you direct your energy? Sometimes there are reasons; things happened you don’t know why. Even so some of the things that came off, they were really a blessing. Always there are lessons to be learnt. Even when it’s hard it doesn’t mean it wasn’t meant to happen, it was all about taking you to where you needed to go. It was a pleasure to work with so many people this year so many wonderful people who came to see us feeling stuck negative and sad that something had happened to them that they had no control of. Robert was one of those who had been in an acting higher level in his job, so when the position was finally advertised he applied. Confident that he would get the job he admitted later that he put minimal effort into the process. When Robert did not get the job he was shattered, he was in effect, he felt his whole world had collapsed. When he came to see us he was blaming the

organisation, he was angry, stressed, overweight, smoking too many cigarettes and felt that there was no future. Together we designed his career and life goals, he took responsibility of where he was at, created a plan and focused on his goals. In his own words; "this is the best thing that has happened to me, I feel like I have my balls back" It took him six months to change his thinking, become 20kgs lighter, stop smoking and design a successful home based business and he now loves the way he lives and works. So what have been your accomplishments over the past year? What has challenged you, what has been a blessing in disguise? What areas were there that made you feel out of whack? Reflect now and pat yourself on the back as no matter, you did the best you could with the resources available to you. So before the final curtain falls take a bow and be grateful for the year and hold your head up and look toward a compelling 2016. Before you get to New Year’s Eve begin to dream of your goals, it’s time to create an incredible year for yourself and your world. Our wish for 2016 is World Peace!

T H E R A P Y A N D T H I S I S W H AT M A K E S H Y P N O T H E R A P Y S U C H A POWERFUL HEALING TOOL. I use Dr Schwartz’s 4 step process to override a client’s automatic response that I learned in my Master Course of Neuro-Hypnotherapy. Let’s use ‘stuttering’ as the problem. Keep in mind I am touching many areas of the brain with this example: left hemisphere, Temporal Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Hippocampus, Amygdala. With each hypnosis case I take on, I know what part of the brain needs attention.

ONCE THE CLIENT IS IN A DEEP HYPNOTIC STATE: 1. I relabel the issue. 2. I reframe the issue. 3. I refocus the issue 4. I revalue the issue

The client is able to see how the stutter is not helping them in any manner what-so-ever, and they begin feel so much better. Brand new neuropathways are formed and it allows the client to speak eloquently and smoothly. The stress, embarrassment and hardship of conversation has been removed, therefore it’s even more likely they will communicate exceptionally well. The hypnosis and 4 step process has removed the anxiety and allowed the clients brain to form a new pathway which creates clear speaking patterns. I trust this small article has given you some idea on how deeply hypnosis can assist people, not just with stuttering but with a wide range of other ailments.

DECEMBER CAN BE AN EMOTIONAL TIME FOR ALL SORTS OF REASONS. EVERYWHERE WE TURN WE'RE SURROUNDED BY C H R I S T M A S PA R A P H E R N A L I A M E A N T T O B R I G H T E N O U R L I V E S A N D I N D U C E U S TO I N D U LG E.

Little wonder some of us have silly season fatigue already. And yet that's not what it's meant to be about is it? We're supposed to be joyful, light hearted and upbeat in the lead up to the big day, and then on that day, be rays of sunshine, love and light to one and all. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas - it's just the mayhem that comes with it that I don't enjoy. Overthinking stuff like parties, clothes, presents, food and avoiding potential disasters creates unnecessary stress and tension. So how about we shake things up this year? Imagine declaring war on stress and anxiety and setting an intention for the opposite. The frantic energy of Christmas can again become a time of fun, love and joy if we intend it to be. And while we can't control events around us, we can control how we participate in them. My mum says that the best present we can give is our presence. So why not give yourself permission to do it different this year and make your presence be the best present to yourself and your loved ones? Just do it and get ready for a fun filled festive season.

THE PROPERTY COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA The Property Council champions the interests of more than 2200 member companies that represent the full spectrum of the industry, including those who invest, own, manage and develop in all sectors of property, creating landmark projects and environments where people live, work, shop and play. Led by a powerful board and strong executive leadership team, the Property Council’s vision is a thriving industry creating prosperity, jobs and strong communities. In 2015 our two key national advocacy priorities have been for fairer taxes and better planning with an overall objective to improve housing affordability in Australia. The Property Council has around 95 staff located across ten offices around the country to service the needs of our members. Here in the Territory we have been vocal in the planning and implementation of the Darwin City Centre Master Plan into the Planning Scheme, we

now will be seeking commitments from both sides of Government and Council to ensure the 78 projects in the plan are budgeted for and planned accordingly. We have been strongly advocating the need for strategic resources and planning of our existing activity centres in the Top End before constructing new centres. We firmly believe that it is imperative to focus on existing centres and ensure the cogs are turning effectively to boost the economy in the local area. The property industry has a larger footprint on the NT economy than any other industry, the Property Council is committed to championing a strong property industry that creates prosperity, jobs and strong communities.

C AN’T WAIT FOR A BREAK? EXHAUSTED FROM THE YEAR YOU’ VE JUST HAD?

Here are some stress busting tips that could make 2016 so much easier… and it starts with self-compassion. Based on extensive data from positive psychology research and a compilation of resilience expert’s strategies, you can find calm in the storm, come what may, in the year ahead.

QUICK TIPS TO BEAT BACK STRESS FOR 2016

ROXANIE LEBSANFT G.Dip.Couns.,B.HSc, Adv. Dip.Hom.,Dip.Bowen.,A. Mus.A.,Cert.IV.TAE. Co founder Bare Hands (www.barehands.com.au) Resilience for Women

Avoid blaming and shaming – be curious. Pointing the finger of blame at anyone, hurts everyone. It leads to guilt, anxiety and depression. Instead of beating yourself up, explore curiously: “What happened?” (Stick with facts and stay emotionally neutral), “How am I feeling?” “Is there anything I could do differently next time that would make this better?” This builds good problem solving skills and helps create lifelong resilience. Avoid competition and comparison – embrace the strengths of diversity Protect yourself from low self-esteem, anxiety and depression by stopping the D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 28

competition and comparison game. Everyone is unique and has different strengths and weaknesses. Comparison is pointless. Focus instead on what you love doing and what comes easily and naturally. By embracing the different strengths of others, without feeling less than, and delegating tasks to those best equipped to deal with them, you’ll build trust, belonging and connection. Stop worrying about being perfect – be a great learner Once you can be okay with continuing to learn, contentment and confidence is guaranteed. Start learning something new in the year ahead or do something creative. One of the seven biggest factors for predicting happiness is engagement in creative activities and play. Remember, it’s okay to fumble and stumble at first and that the fun is in the process and wonderment of discovering something new.

These top tips can help you find a wealth of resilience to enjoy the coming year.

Your tree can be as little or as big as you want, all that limits you is your space and the branches that are available to collect. Use a single branch/ pod or a cluster of them tied together at the base. You can either place the branch upright in a vase filled with sand or stones to anchor it or choose to hang the branch upside down depending on where you will locate it. Choose a seed pod (or a shapely branch of any kind will work just as well) and wipe it free of any dirt or critters before painting it in a colour that you like. You can use a water-based paint or a can of spray paint is a cheap and easy method. I find it easiest to hang the branch upside down before spraying it with newspaper underneath to catch the drips. Once the paint has dried you can decide how you will finally arrange the branch and D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 31

position this. Personally I am hanging mine from a curtain rod to place the tree in my window where it is visible but a small ceiling hook would work just as well. • Circle the branch with a string of fairy lights or tinsel using a spiral direction from the bottom up (Make sure you choose lightweight fairy lights so as not to break your delicate branches). •Choose your decorations (light ones) and position these on the tree. • Add some personal touches that will match your Christmas theme, Sea shells can be glued to the base, hand made paper flowers or origami, or you could hang small paper love notes for family and friends to find. Sit back and admire your work with a Christmas drink in hand.

can hold 6 cars and at any one time D&T can have 15 vehicles stored at the store for work to commence. The success over the last 8 years can be contributed to their exceptional customer satisfaction. “Being customer orientated and focused has really led to the success of our store; we have grown to accommodate demand and projects with the belief that our customer satisfaction has made us one of Darwin’s stand out performance workshops. Our service and work quality is at a high level and at this stage we are the only workshop in Darwin that offers all the various services that we do.” The success of D&T performance stems from its high level of customer satisfaction, “To be successful you need to listen and understand what is out there and what the customer wants, word of mouth is crucial to many businesses in the Territory given its size of population. You must follow up any customer dissatisfaction and act on it quickly. As long as you always remember the customer comes first and that you can deliver a service that is of the highest quality and at an affordable price you will always have new and existing clients.”

However, Chris didn’t head straight into the family business himself. A panel beater by trade, he has also worked as an earthmover, underground coal miner and safety representative for the CFMEU in Queensland before deciding to make the move to Darwin. Chris began working as a delivery driver for Gilbert’s, then, after obtaining his road train licence, started doing Katherine change overs and Kununurra on weekends. Following the retirement of the former manager, Chris has taken up the position and is now manager of Gilbert’s Transport Services. As a company with such lengthy history in the industry, Gilbert’s has made its name and enjoyed continual success by delivering a reliable and personal customer service. A recent expansion has seen them grow after 40 years running in the Northern Territory from South Australia to four 2-up teams to meet the growing customer demand. “I think we are different to some other transport companies as we are a family owned and operated company; from Dad and Lorraine at the top, Kathy (sister) office manager, Phillip (brother) operations manager, Mark (brother) just coming off the road after 10 years doing Adelaide – Darwin runs now based in Adelaide and Alex (nephew) is 2 IC in the workshop. Customers are happy to deal with family businesses. We are always contactable and

get to the bottom of any concerns they may raise,” he said. “We offer a reliable, friendly, customer-focused business and our equipment is maintained to a high standard which is a credit to all our employees and staff.” The business relies on good communication. The drivers are, as Chris’ father Peter says, “the face of the business” who deal directly with customers on a daily basis and Chris regularly receives positive feedback from satisfied customers.

“No matter the amount of freight a customer has, be it one car ton or a full trailer load, it is all important to them and they need to be respected and t r e a t e d t h e s a m e ,” said Chris. “One thing that I always remember is a saying my grandpa had: ‘In life, it is nice to be important but more so, it’s important to be nice’.” In 2015, Chris is looking forward to spending time with his new partner Kimberley and children Ronald (17) and Nikita (15) while also getting some fishing and crabbing in. Chris believes no matter what industry you are in, if you provide a good and reliable service, your business will succeed. “It’s not a new philosophy but one that will definitely work and is proven.”

One school that is exploring various ways to maintain positive self esteem and motivation in learning is The Essington School Darwin, and one of the programs it has developed is its youth radio broadcasting program. The School is well known for its excellent and innovative programs: Learn to Fly Program, interstate and overseas tours, sporting tours to Asia, Marine Science and Aquaculture Science Centre and links with Charles Darwin University. In 2015 the School celebrates eleven years of student broadcasting in Darwin. In 2005 the School established a Radio Station for

students as part of its focus on Media Studies and Communication Skills. A radio studio was set up at the school and trials conducted where prerecorded programs were broadcast on the internet. From this developed a partnership with Radio Larrakia, a community radio station, where students were introduced to community radio and live broad casting. For six years they had a two hour weekly program on Radio Larrakia. With the move of Radio Larrakia to new studios in the city – and their move into community television, the School developed a partnership with DARWIN FM (91.5 FM) to conduct a daily youth radio show from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. David Cannon, Principal of The Essington School Darwin, said: “The focus on developing high levels of personal communication skills using radio is based on a program developed in leading US schools. The link with Radio Larrakia and DARWIN FM and the opportunity for students to broadcast live each week is designed to enhance the personal communication skills of individual students and to increase their understanding of mass communication, the media”. The School plans to expand the current radio program into a ‘radio magazine’ focus on youth activities and events in Darwin and the NT. It is also planning to provide students with a similar ‘hands on’ experience in the future in television broadcasting through partnerships with TV Larrakia and Indigenous Broadcasting. David Cannon, Principal of The Essington School Darwin said, “These programs along with the various other programs students do in school are designed to build the confidence of students, to increase their self esteem and provide a high level of engagement at the difficult early secondary years of education. We are very pleased with the positive response from students and their obvious personal growth”.

CHRISTMAS AND THE TAX OFFICE Not that the taxman doesn't know how to have fun. The ATO may be prudent, but there is still some wriggle room to let your hair down. Christmas-time entertainment up to the value of $300 (including GST) for each employee and their associates is generally exempt from FBT under the ‘minor benefits’ rule. If you hold a Christmas party on the business premises during a working day and provide food and drinks, it should be FBT free if only employees are attending. If spouses or partners are invited, the cost should still be FBT free if less than $300. If the party is held off-premises (e.g. a restaurant or a pub), the $300 limit applies to both employees and associates. There is also a Santa-inspired tweak to the ‘minor benefits’ rule in that the threshold of $300 is applied for each benefit provided. So, if you also give a gift to employees (such as, hampers, gift vouchers, flowers and wine) the party and the gift

A TOWN 5 HOURS NOR TH OF ALICE SPRINGS W I T H A P O P U L AT I O N O F 3 , 0 6 2 ( 2 0 1 1 C E N S U S ) .

So what makes Tennant Creek stand out? Well let’s begin with the announcement this week by the Northern Territory Government that it had decided on a company to build the NEGI. And for those of you, like me, that are over three and four letter acronyms, that stands for the North East Gas Interconnector. Essentially a whopping big gas pipeline to connect into the one currently running between Darwin and Alice Springs, that will carry gas between Tennant Creek and Mt. Isa, which will in turn connect to the pipes serving the eastern seaboard. The announcement indicated that a facility – which in layman’s terms for we who are not educated in the sciences of gas works will be a big pumping station – will be built and located in Tennant Creek. Along with this the company building the pipeline stated that it was their intention to undertake much of the pre-construction and pipe work in

D A R W I N L I F E M A G A Z I N E 42

Tennant Creek. Tennant has, over its industrious and illustrious past, played host to the mining of gold, copper, manganese and phosphate. It is also the regional service hub for the huge pastoral stations producing premium beef cattle. And what has happened to property prices in Tennant Creek. In September 1999 you could have purchased a house for a median price of $51,000. In September 2015, just 16 years later, this median price has risen by over 336 percent to $222,500. In fact in December 2014 the median price actually reached $291,250. It’s not my place to suggest that the announcement of a major $1.3 billion economic project based in Tennant Creek would have an effect on either residential or industrial land…BUT… if you’re investing in property and looking for something a little different, you might just want to ‘Google’ Tennant Creek.
